4. GKR - Review
What is the purpose
of a topic sentence?
Task: put the
paragraphs back
together
5. What is a paragraph?
• A paragraph is a group of sentences that convey
an idea.
• Each sentence works together as part of a unit to
create an overall thought or impression.
• A paragraph is the smallest unit or cluster of
sentences in which one idea can be developed
adequately.
• Paragraphs can stand alone or function as part of
an essay, but each paragraph covers only one main
idea.
6. What is a topic sentence
• The most important sentence in your
paragraph is the topic sentence, which clearly
states the subject of the whole paragraph.
• The topic sentence is usually the first sentence
of the paragraph because it gives an overview
of the sentences to follow.
7. Supporting Sentences
(Explanation and Evidence)
• The supporting sentences after the topic
sentence help to develop the main idea.
• These sentences give specific details related to
the topic sentence.
• In these sentences you explain why topic is
important.
8. Concluding Sentence
(Link)
• A final or concluding sentence often restates or
summarises the main idea of the topic
sentence.
• How does the information in the paragraph
link to your actual topic?

my paragraph need?

11. Writing a Paragraph
I am a Shepparton girl through and through. The
name of Shepparton originated from the surname of
one of the town's first European settlers, Sherbourne
Sheppard. The first permanent European settlement
in the area was by squatter Edward Khull during the
1840’s, after which a man named Sherbourne
Sheppard took over. Sheppards holding developed
into a village adjacent to the Goulburn River known as
"Sheppardton". Shepparton wasn’t declared a town
until September 1860. Well over one hundred years
later I was born here and this is where I have mainly
lived all of my life.

Editor's Notes
Modelling my introductory paragraph.
Katunga was named by the Bangerang mob. The name means sweet water. The Katunga known by the Bangerang people was to change with colonisation. From a land used for hunting, its rich soils encouraged white settlers and the establishment of agriculture in the area. It is one of the oldest grape growing regions in Australia with the first grape vine being planted in the 1880s. The township itself was colonised in 1888 after the railway was extended from Numurkah. The advent of the railway led to the establishment of other businesses. Within one year a general store, saddlery, blacksmith, dressmakers, grain store, brickyards, sheep and cattle yards were opened. A church was also established. By December 1984, these businesses had been long gone.
