1.What was the most interesting feature of the whole lung? 2.Describe the anatomy of the trachea and the esophagus. 4.How can you tell healthy well ventilated areas of the lung? What did the parts of the lung that were not well ventilated look like? 5. What was most surprising or interesting thing you learned by watching the lung inflation/dissection? Questions for Artificial Lung Demonstration 1.What was does the plastic bottle represent? 2.What does the balloon represent? 3.What does the disposable glove represent? 4.What happens when you push the glove up into the plastic bottle – what action does this model? 5.What happens when you pull the glove down from the plastic bottle – what action does this model? Solution Answer 1. The lungs are the primary respiratory organs. In humans there is a right lung and left lung. The right lung has 3 short lobes, whereas, the left lung has 2 longer, narrow lobes. The most interesting feature of the lungs is alveoli. The lungs consist of several air sacs known as alveoli which are grouped together to form the endings of the bronchioles. Lung is the only organ that can float on water. 2. Trachea is also known as wind pipe that transport air to bronchi. It is a Cartilagenous ring that connects the pharynx and larynx to the lungs. The trachea extends from the pharynx and branches into two primary bronchi. The trachea is lined with ciliated columnar epithelium and contains protective mucin. There are incomplete rings that maintain the latency of the trachea. There is only one complete ring at the top of the trachea that attaches it to the larynx. The oesophagus is a muscular, connecting tube between the pharynx and stomach. Muscular movement of the oesophagus allow the passage of food. The oesophagus consists of cervical, abdominal, and thoracic parts. 4. The healthy lung looks light pink in color with tiny air sacs. Blood vessels are visible and specks of gray color represent the inhaled polluted air. The parts of the lung that were not well ventilated would appear black in color and mottled due to accumulation of tar and impurities from cigarettes. The air space enlarges due to this accumulated tar. 5. The most surprising facts that I learned is the left lung is smaller than the right lung as the eft lung should provide enough space for the heart. In left lung there are two lobes whereas in the right lung there are three lobes thus the left lung weighs lighter than the right lung..
