ANALYSIS OF 1ST
AUDIENCE SURVEY

From my first question it is clear
that I can cater to both sexes,
due to the fact male and female
answers were not far from
50/50. This allows me to design
for a unisex audience, but
prehaps slightly more on
females. This will give me more
freedom with colour schemes
and clothing, because (at the
least) I know that I will be
pleasing at least some of my
audience.
This evidence from my peers
and general public indicates I
will be targeting my products
towards a ’young adult’
audience. This audience is rather
large, so I have a lot more
potential to please. Also,16-35
are a digital generation, who are
usually the type of age group
that are spending the most time
on social media and the
internet. This implies that this
target audience will want more
contemporary elements,
whether it be through clothing,
location or editing style. This
also works as I am of this age
range, so it will be easier to
create from a first hand
perspective, as I can also think
of what I would want as a
member of the audience.
For this question I found that my participants tended to enjoy the genres pop, alternative, indie most, as these were
the top three most voted for genres. This is likely to be because more younger participants answered my survey and
these genres are most likely to be popular with a more contemporary audience. I am likely to choose an alternative/
indie genre, rather than pop, due to the idea of pop not having a niche, concise audience. Where as a slightly
smaller alternative audience is easier to cater to and challenge/ conform to codes and conventions of this genre. All
in all, I believe pop may be more difficult, due to the amount freedom that comes with who I will cater to, which
could result in my project being generic and not as focused as it has potential to be.
Narrative music videos were
found to be, by far, most
popular. This could be down to
the fact that these are generally
thought to be more
entertaining and easily to
follow. On the other hand, this
could be because a narrative
video is common in the pop
genre, which most of my
audience will have been
subjected to. By making a
narrative video I will be able to
cater to this wide audience, by
following the story of that song
I decide to use for my music
video.
These answers were rather varied, as
many people watch music video
because on enjoyment and an
attraction towards certain genre,
artist or song, that they want to hear
more from. This is to be expected,
but the fact ’enjoy the song’ was the
most popular answer, it implies I will
have to link the video very closely
with the style and lyrics of the song.
I also noticed that ’realistic and
relatable’ videos were more popular,
which is probably due to the fact a
younger, less experienced audience
wants to feel closer to the artist, on
a more grounded level. Also a
relatable video, is going to create a
connection between producer and
consumer, therefor growing an
audience.
Answers from this question also
wavered, as there wasn’t really a
clear, over riding answer. Artsy and
naturalistic videos were popular,
due to the fact this can go hand in
hand with the indie genre, as these
are common styles/ aesthetics. Dark
and animated content was also an
interest, implying my target
audience would enjoy edgier
content and perhaps an influence to
digital or animated art, as this is
very modern, and could work with
the alternative conventions, but
challenge the indie conventions.
This has potential for the contrast to
have a different effect on the
audience, and stand out against
existing content.
This question received fairly neutral
answers, implying most people will
watch music videos when it is
easiest for them and fits into their
schedule, rather than a specific time
of day. Although it is suggested that
people watch music videos during
their break and after work/ school,
to me this implies that the videos
are a source of entertainment and
even escapism, to remove them
from their own lives. This also
indicates that these may be
watched, for a similar reason music
or TV would be, to lift the spirit,
suggesting that an interesting and
upbeat video would cater to this
audience.
Most of my target audience
tend to watch music videos
through social media platforms
or TV, more specifically
YouTube. This works well as I
will be uploading my final
product to this platform at the
end of the project. Also, this
adds to the idea of a modern
audience wanting new,
contemporary and unique
content, which I should be
catering for.
It was evident that social media
and magazines are where the
majority of my audience
discover music videos. I believe
the answers regarding magazine
and newspapers, are from
participants outside of my age
range, as those types of people
are usually found to spend less
time on social media. To
progress from this I can look at
how artists advertise themselves
online and what types of social
media adverts gain the most
attention. Then I can apply this
to my magazine advertisement,
so I am still catering to this
audience, but through a
different medium of media.
These answers were also not
very specific, however this
should effect my target
audience overly, as I am aware
the entertainment is the main
reason most people will take
time to watch any content. This
just ensures me that I should
focus on escapism and have the
aim of taking the audience away
from what is going on around
them. This will be effective if my
music video is cohesive,
detailed, makes sense and
follows a narrative.
