CASE STUDY - [ Compulsory ]
Aptec Electronics Company (AEC) has an excellent national and international reputation.
Employees were huppy to work for AEC. But the company demands total loyalty from its
employees and even tries to influence their behaviour and appearance after work. Maya, a bright
young woman working for AEC for over i0 years, was highty respected by the colleagues and
did a fine job as a divisional sales manager. It was generally agreed that she had excellent
potential for advancement. For 2 months Maya had been in love with Manjunath who worked in
electronics division of a competing company. One day, Mr. Shefloy, Maya's boss approached
her about this matter, stating that there might be a possible conflict of interest in her association
with an employee of the competitor. He made it clear that AEC has a written policy that
demands (and rewards) complete loyalty from all its employees.
Shortly after this emotional confrontation with her boss, Ms. Maya was transferred to a non-
managerial position without any loss in pay.
She also noted that her friends at AEC tried to avoid her. But Maya felt very strongly that the
company had no business suggesting who she could and could not see after working hours; as a
result she quit her job.
Questions:
1. Is the situation happened in the case motivating to the employees like Maya?
2. What.is your answer if Maya had access to important company trade secrets?
3. What would you have done if in Maya's position?
4. What is your suggestion for supervisors of AEC?

CITI BANK
NIark Parsells, President and the chief operating officers of Citi bank online, is responsible for
Citi group's online banking strategy and irnplementation. Prior to his arrival at Citi bank, several
different strategies had been pursued and with multiple Internet based products launched. While
Citi bank had demonstrated a commitment. to developing an effective Internet presence and a
willingness to experirnent with Internet strategy over the previous two years Parsells knew that
the bank would soon expect positive and demonstrable returns on the large investments made
thus far. In addition, his strategy and its subsequent execution needed to prepare Citibank for
long term competition rn,ith an increasing number of entrants with novel business rnodels and
strategies, many of whom lacked short term profit expectations.
The new strategy was to offer a "Personal financial portal", which offered a view into each
account holder's financial world. Specifically Citibank online provided access to banking and
brokerage accounts and additional services such as online bill payment, lund transfers and
integration with Citibank's other online products. Further more, in creating the personal
financial portal, it also offered robust planning tootrs, real time market information, portfolio

Mr. and Mrs. Basu went to woodlancl's apparel section to buy a pullover. Mr. Basu did not read
the price tag on the piece he had selected. While making the payment, he asked for the price at
the counter. The answer was " Rs. 950" meanwhile , Mrs. Basu,, who was still shopping, came
back and joined her husband. She was glad that he had selected a nice black pullover for himself.
She pointed out that there was a 25 percent discount on that item. The person at the billing
counter nodded in agreement. Mr. Basu was thrilled to hear that " that means the price of this
pullover is just Rs.645 that's fantastic", said Mr". Basu. He decided to buy another pullover in
green.
In no time, he returned with the second pullover and asked the salesperson to pack both. When
he received the cash memo for payment, he was astonished to find that he had to pay Rs. 1,,900
and not Rs. 1 ,290 as he had expected.
Mr. Base could hardly reconcile hirnself to the fact that the salesperson had first quoted the
discounted price that is Rs. 950. But original price printed on the price tag was Rs. I ,225.
Questions :
1) Identity the three sources of Mr. Basu's information about the price of the pullover.

Maya, a bright young woman working for AEC for over i0 years, was highty respected by the colleagues and did a fine job as a divisional sales manager. It was generally agreed that she had excellent potential for advancement. For 2 months Maya had been in love with Manjunath who worked in electronics division of a competing company. One day, Mr. Shefloy, Maya's boss approached her about this matter, stating that there might be a possible conflict of interest in her association with an employee of the competitor. He made it clear that AEC has a written policy that demands (and rewards) complete loyalty from all its employees. Shortly after this emotional confrontation with her boss, Ms. Maya was transferred to a non- managerial position without any loss in pay. She also noted that her friends at AEC tried to avoid her. But Maya felt very strongly that the company had no business suggesting who she could and could not see after working hours; as a result she quit her job. Questions: 1. Is the situation happened in the case motivating to the employees like Maya? 2. What.is your answer if Maya had access to important company trade secrets? 3. She pointed out that there was a 25 percent discount on that item. The person at the billing counter nodded in agreement. Mr. Basu was thrilled to hear that " that means the price of this pullover is just Rs.645 that's fantastic", said Mr". Basu. He decided to buy another pullover in green. In no time, he returned with the second pullover and asked the salesperson to pack both. When he received the cash memo for payment, he was astonished to find that he had to pay Rs. 1,,900 and not Rs. 1 ,290 as he had expected.
