QUALITY STATEMENTS
QUALITY STATEMENTS
Quality statement are part of strategic planning process and once developed are occasionally
reviewed and updated.
Three elements of quality statements are :
a. Vision statement,
b. Mission statement, and
c. Quality policy statement
Vision Statement
The vision statement is a short declaration of what on organization aspires to be tomorrow.
Vision is a desired future state of the organization
It is the ideal state that might never be reached; but on which one will work hard continuously to achieve.
Successful visions provide a brief guideline for decision making.
Imagination and inspiration are the important components of a vision.
Typically, a vision can be viewed as the ultimate goal of the organization, one that may take 5 or even 10 years to
achieve.
VISION STATEMENT
It is a short declaration of what an organization aspires to be tomorrow.
The vision statement should be coined in such a way that the leaders and the employees working in the
organization should work towards the achievements of the vision statement.
An example of a simple vision statement is :
“To continuously enrich knowledge base of practitioners in mobility industry and institutions in the service of
humanity”. – Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
Example :
To be the leading consumer battery company in the world.- Duracell International
To engineer, produce, and market the world’s finest automobiles. Cadillac Motor Car Division
Vision Statement
• This is the long-term future plan or dream that you envision for your organization.
• This vision describes the long-run objective of your company, usually for a time frame of five to ten
years or even longer.
• It essentially envisions what the future of the company should look like and incorporates that via
strategies.
• A vision statement should actually be timeless, always pushing the company to greater heights.
• But it is important not to be unrealistic in your planning, not to set impossible targets.
Characteristics of Good Vision Statement
• It is motivational, it must inspire the reader
• Vision statement is always future based
• Must be a reflection of the company’s values and their culture
• Should be aimed at positive growth
• Defines the company’s future and their reason for existence
• Let us take the example of IKEA whose Vision Statement is “Our vision is to create a better
everyday life for many people.” This is a short precise and inspirational statement that clearly
guides the company towards the future
Mission Statement
The mission statement, describes the function of the organization.
It provides a clear statement of purpose for employees, customers, and suppliers.
The mission statement answers the following questions :
who we are?;
who are our customers? ;
what we do?; and
how we do it?
An example of a simple mission statement is :
We exist to create, make, and market useful products and services to satisfy the needs of our customers
throughout the world. Texas Instruments
Mission Statement
A mission statement is like a road map of how to achieve the goals set in your vision statement.
It defines the purpose of the organization.
A mission statement is generally longer than the vision. It covers some or all of the following points
• Business of the company
• Who the company serves
• Their reason for existence
• How they go about their day to day work
• A Mission statement will motivate employees to work hard towards achieving the goals of the company.
It will also inform and inspire potential customers. It is an important step in strategic planning.
Importance of Vision and Mission Statements
• Vision and Mission Statement are both important for the progress and growth of the company
irrespective to the size of the company.
• Vision and Mission statement are essential for communication with your employees and your
customers.
• They are also important branding tools.
Quality Policy Statement
· The quality policy is a guide for everyone in the organization as to how they
provide products and service to the customers.
· It should be written by the CEO with feedback from the workforce and be approved
by the quality council.
· A quality policy is a important requirement of ISO 9000 quality systems.
An example of a simple quality policy statement is:
“Xerox is a quality company. Quality is the basic business principle for Xerox. Quality
means providing our external and internal customers with innovative products and services
that fully satisfy their requirements. Quality is the job of every employee - Xerox Corporation”.
QUALITY POLICY STATEMENT
It is guide for everyone in the organization as to how they should provide products and services to the
customers.
Common characteristics are
Ø Quality is first among equals
Ø Meet the needs of the internal & external customers
Ø Equal or exceed competition
Ø Continuously improve the quality
Ø Utilize the entire workforce
.
Policies are a guide to managerial action.
An organization may have policies in a number of areas, quality, environment, safety, human resources, etc.
These policies guide day-to-day decision making.
Key points
Vision : Desired future state of organization.
Mission : What business we are in.
Policy : Commitment to customer
