2. Engineering Mechanics
Engineering Mechanics may be defined as the
branch of science which deals with the behavior of a
body with the state of rest or motion, subject to the
action of forces.
The branch of Engineering Mechanics which
deals with the study of different laws of mechanics as
applied to the solution of Engineering problems is
called Applied Mechanics.

4. Branches of Engineering Mechanics
In Mechanics of Rigid bodies, deformations are
assumed to be very small and hence neglected. The
small deformations does not appreciably affect the
conditions of equilibrium.
But in actual structure and machines,
deformations are also analyzed, that branch of
mechanics is called as Mechanics of deformable
bodies (or Mechanics of Materials (or) Strength of
Materials.
Mechanics of fluids is the branch of science
which deals with the behavior of fluids, subjected to
the action of forces in the state of rest and motion.

5. 1. Statics.
It is that branch of Theory of Machines which
deals with the forces and their effects while the
machine parts are at rest. The mass of the parts is
assumed to be negligible.
2. Dynamics.
It is that branch of Theory of Machines which
deals with the forces and their effects, while acting
upon the machine parts in motion.

6. 3. Kinematics.
It is that branch of Theory of Machines which
deals with the relative motion between the various
parts of the machines.
4. Kinetics.
It is that branch of Theory of Machines which
deals with the inertia forces which arise from the
combined effect of the mass and motion of the
machine parts.

11. Fundamental Concepts
Space is associated with the motion or the position of
a point P given in terms of three coordinates
measured from a reference point or origin.
Time of an event in case of the dynamic condition of
a point is to defined.
Mass is used to quantify the amount of resistance that
is exerted by a body while changing its state of rest or
motion.

12. Force is defined as the ability to translate a body into
action or as the action of one body on another.
Rigid body - A body that does not under go any
deformation due to the action of the forces applied on it is
considered to be rigid.
Particle - A body is idealized as a particle when the whole
mass of the body is concentrated at its centroid and lines
of action of a system of forces, including the support
reactions applied on the body, pass through the centroid.
