After reading the Three Main Sociological Perspectives, I developed a brief understanding about
sociology. Out of all three perspectives, I have witnessed numerous examples that represent
functional perspective. There are two parts that make up the functional perspective. The two parts
are manifest function and latent function. One event that I witnessed that demonstrated a latent
function was when Carmen Farina opened schools after a severe snow storm. In the winter of 2014,
Carmen Farina made the decision that required all New York City schools to open. On the previous

My depiction of women in some of the stories showed them as weak and powerless. The women
only existed to please people. The characters in the stories portrayed women as tools to use for their
own convenience. The stories portray women as sexualized and used by many people. The women
never speak out against any rule or regulation; instead, they nod and agree with whatever someone
says. Like puppets, the women in these stories only existed for someone to enjoy physically or for
them to help someone else gain status or rewards. Many of the women become abused, mentally or
physically in some scenarios. I will give some examples of how women get portrayed poorly. In
Candide, the men in the story describe the women as sexual objects. To quote Candide, "Her

The idea of a comparative analysis essay is to strengthen ones understanding of a particular work by

While conducting an area check of the business, LP Officer, Chris Hoerl, was advised that two

meanings. The first meaning is that death is the one this that is constant. Regardless of how we feel
about one another, emotions evolved, and even love, all things will come to an end. If something

During the week seven class session on February 7th, Joseph P. Farina, retired Chief Judge of
Florida's 11th Circuit, discussed the judicial system with the class. I knew most of the technical
material that he covered because I have taken Judicial Process in the past. I loved his use of legal

regarding critical thinking. I took Intro to Logic, and I took away so much from the class.
Understanding types of argumentation and reasoning is a valuable tool to wield. We touched on
deductive and inductive reasoning a little bit. I think that everyone should be required to take
philosophy and logic at some point in their academic career because it does open your eyes to
different perspectives and to different ways people argue that may or may not be sound. In the legal
profession, you cannot make ad hominem or strawman arguments in front of a judge. You should
logically make an argument with evidence and proof. Persuasion is important, and some people are
persuaded by pathos and ethos, but the law is based on logos. Because the law is based on logos, it
makes sense to have a system of looking at cases. We learned about I.R.A.Q., which stands for

The Magic in Magical Realism
While reading the stories Death Constant Beyond Love and And of Clay We Are Created I found
myself glued to the text. The both of them had such great detail and it kept you wanting to read more
and more. These stories really exemplify the use of Magical Realism. What is Magical Realism?
Magical Realism is reality mixed with a touch of non–reality. This really draws you in and makes
you feel like part of the story that is in front of you. By utilizing the technique of magical realism,
authors like Marquez and Allende are able to transform, what was a simple realist story, into
something much more powerful, which makes it more interesting and exciting to read.
Death Constant Beyond Love is a story that was written in 1970, by Gabriel García Márquez. The
story is about a dying Senator Onesimo Sanchez, who diagnosed by doctors only had six (6) months
and eleven (11) days to live. Despite having a timetable for the rest of his life Senator Sanchez
continued to live a normal life keeping his illness a secret from everybody. As he continued to

In this work, Marquez focuses on corruption as Senator Onesimo Sanchez accepts pay offs from his
people. As specified by the text, "In this story he is clearly a corrupt politician who accepts bribes
and stays in power by helping the local property owners avoid reform" (2053). Accordingly, in the
text, Sanchez speaks at a rally and knowingly presents promises that he does not intend to keep. In
the text, it states,"We will no longer be foundlings in our own country, orphans of God in a realm of
thirst and bad climate, exiles in our own land. We will be different people, ladies and gentlemen, we
will be a great and happy people," (2056). This quote emphasizes that Sanchez deceives his people
in order to stay in power. Additionally, Sanchez encounters Nelson Farina, who is an escaped
convict that continuously begs him for a false–identification card. Thus, Farina sends his daughter,
Laura, to seduce Sanchez into providing him with an ID. However, Laura is wearing a chastity–belt
that her father uses to persuade Sanchez into delivering his request. Ultimately, these ideas relate to
the theme of corruption as Sanchez relays and performs deals based on his own satisfaction. Another
theme within the story is loneliness. This theme is prominent in the work, because Sanchez suffers
alone due to his underlying alienation. Sanchez is a husband and a father, yet he never tells any of
them that he has six months and eleven days to live.

West Boca Raton Accident Analysis
February 23, 2016 was the 20th anniversary of an accident in West Boca Raton, Florida that killed
five teenagers. A memorial took place at 5:15 p.m. on February 23. The purpose of the memorial
was to honor the five teens who lost their lives in the accident. The service took place on Palmetto
Road, which is the same place that the accident occurred.
The five teenagers were in a Honda Civic. The driver of the car was going over 90 MPH, lost
control of the car and hit another car. Two more teens were seriously injured in the accident. The

Gabriel Marquez witnessed a great deal of tragedy when his home country of Columbia was going
through a civil war. On April 9th, 1948 Jorge Eliezer Gaitan, a Liberal party leader, was murdered in
Bogota. According to Zaida and Laurent, "This incident plunged Columbia into a decade of violence
and upheaval that would become known at La Violencia." This event had a profound effect on
Marquez. In fact, much of what he wrote about was inspired by politics and Latin America's
problems during this time. On a more fictional note, Marquez was also inspired by mystical, fantasy
stories that his grandmother told him when he was a boy. By the same token, May writes, "From the
influences of his early childhood, when he learned from his grandmother how to tell the most
fantastic stories in matter–of–fact tone, to his later observations of the oppression and cruelties of

In "Death Constant Beyond Love" Gabriel Marquez combines these serious, tragic themes with his
signature style of magical realism to tell a story about a Columbian political leader who encounters
death, fate solitude, love, and power. First, in the story, the most obvious tragedy is Sanchez's
impending death which he tragically chooses to face alone. Sanchez has been told by doctors that he
will be "dead forever by next Christmas" (Puchner, 988). Although Sanchez knows that his death is
coming, he chooses to carry on with life as normal which tells the reader that he is still trying to
enjoy life and hold onto his dignity. This type of character is often present in Marquez's stories. May
explains that "His characters experience the magic and joy of life and face the suffering of solitude
and isolation but always with an innate dignity." When Sanchez is about to take a nap he places a
rose in water as an effort to preserve it, which is an indication that he has a desire to enjoy the

depicts the vulnerability and helplessness of a human when dealing with two of the most enigmatic
parts of life. The background of corruption, poverty, and the political campaign become rather
insignificant to the broader themes of love and death. Marquez expresses the confusion, power and
diversity that come with the feeling of love and how ever changing it can be. These emotions are
portrayed through the wealthy senator, Onesimo Sanchez. His love for Laura Farina becomes a

Seeking any help from outside, especially psychological help has been difficult and embarrassing
(Vogel, Wester & Larson, 2007, p.410). Traditionally, men talk less and women tend to express
themselves more. It is considered that women are emotionally vulnerable than men. This
vulnerability and a need for emotional support opens the way for a women to seek psychological
help than men (Fischer & Farina, 1995, p.368). According to studies of Fischer and Farina (1995,
p.370), women were the most positive about seeking help in every aspect, so gender was considered
as a major factor but age was appeared unrelated with seeking help. The younger adults tend to have
more positive attitude than the older adults as older adults has lived a life where psychological help
has been considered a disgrace. The reason behind this attitude difference is basic college education,
younger adults with college education has better positive attitude towards seeking psychological
help than the older adults without college education (Vogel, Wester & Larson, 2007, p.415).
Studies says that, societies with strong cultural backgrounds less favourable in seeking help than the
