Libraries are the living, breathing internet that existed long before the digital network that we know today. They are the connected nodes of information and community exchange that we have relied on to communicate, collaborate, share resources and preserve knowledge in our societies for centuries.
But there are concerns about the future of physical libraries, given that so many of us have easy access to virtual libraries of information on our computers at home. Recent Pew Internet Project research examines technology use by teenagers and suggests how the behavior and expectations of young internet users might shape the libraries of the future.

After centuries with little change, scientific libraries have recently experienced massive upheaval. From being almost entirely paper-based, most libraries are now almost completely digital. This information revolution has all happened in less than 20 years and has created many novel opportunities and threats for scientists, publishers and libraries.
Today, we are struggling with an embarassing wealth of digital knowledge on the Web. Most scientists access this knowledge through some kind of digital library, however these places can be cold, impersonal, isolated, and inaccessible places. Many libraries are still clinging to obsolete models of identity, attribution, contribution, citation and publication.
Based on a review published in PLoS Computational Biology, http://pubmed.gov/18974831 this talk will discuss the current chilly state of digital libraries for biologists, chemists and informaticians, including PubMed and Google Scholar. We highlight problems and solutions to the coupling and decoupling of publication data and metadata, with a tool called http://www.citeulike.org. This software tool exploits the Web to make digital libraries “warmer”: more personal, sociable, integrated, and accessible places.
Finally issues that will help or hinder the continued warming of libraries in the future, particularly the accurate identity of authors and their publications, are briefly introduced. These are discussed in the context of the BBSRC funded REFINE project, at the National Centre for Text Mining (NaCTeM.ac.uk), which is linking biochemical pathway data with evidence for pathways from the PubMed database.

People don’t want just goods or services from a business anymore - they want a unique, remarkable experience built around those goods or services. It’s the same for your library. Your patrons are looking for more than a book - they can find that at Walmart, or even in their pocket. They want a unique, useful user experience built around “your stuff.”
User experiences are a strange brew of structure, community, and customers. Today’s savvy librarians need to focus on the full digital and physical experiences patrons have when they make a library visit - so they can quickly find information, make decisions, or participate - creating positive experiences that visitors not only remember but want to share with others. David Lee King explains the customer experience design concept, introduces a range of tools and strategies, and shares experience design best practices.
Literature in digital environments: Changes and emerging trends in Australian...
Igniting a passion for reading and research is core business for school libraries, inevitably placing the library at the centre of the 21st century reading and learning experience. It is in this context that digital literature creates some challenging questions for teachers and librarians in schools, while the emergence of digital technology and/or device options also offers a great many opportunities. Collection development in school libraries encompasses an understanding of the need to contextualise these e-literature needs within the learning and teaching experiences in the school. The Australian Library and Information Association’s 2013 statement Future of collections 50:50 predicted that library print and ebook collections in libraries would establish a 50:50 equilibrium by 2020 and that this balance would be maintained for the foreseeable future. This statement from the Australian professional body raised the need to know more about e-collections in school libraries. For teacher librarians in Australian schools, the nature of online collections, and the integration of ebooks into the evolving reading culture is influenced by the range and diversity of texts, interfaces, devices, and experiences available to complement existing print and media collections or services. Management and budget constraints also influence e-collections. By undertaking a review of the literature, a discussion of the education context, and a critical analysis of the trends evidenced by national survey data, this paper presents an overview of the changes and emerging trends in digital literature and ebook collections in school library services in Australia today.

A theory of digital library metadata the emergence of enriching and filtering
Adopting a Constructivist Grounded Theory Method, this thesis conducted in-depth interviews with 57 purposefully selected participants, comprised of practising librarians, researchers, metadata consultants and library users. The interview data was analysed using three stages of iterative data analysis: open coding, focused coding and theoretical coding. The analysis resulted in the emergence of four Core Categories, namely, metadata Enriching, Linking, Openness and Filtering. Further integration of the Core Categories resulted in the emergence of a theory of digital library metadata; The Theory of Metadata Enriching and Filtering.
The theory stipulates that metadata that has been enriched, by melding standards-based (a priori) and socially-constructed (post-hoc) metadata, cannot be optimally utilised unless the resulting metadata is contextually and semantically linked to both internal and external information sources. Moreover, in order to exploit the full benefits of such linking, metadata must be made openly accessible, where it can be shared, re-used, mixed and matched, thus reducing metadata duplication. Ultimately, metadata that has been enriched (by linking and being made openly accessible) should be filtered for each user, via a flexible, personalised, and re-configurable interface.
The theory provides a holistic framework demonstrating the interdependence between expert curated and socially-constructed metadata, wherein the former helps to structure the latter, whilst the latter provides diversity to the former. This theory also suggests a conceptual shift from the current metadata principle of sufficiency and necessity, which has resulted in metadata simplicity, to the principle of metadata enriching where information objects are described using a multiplicity of users’ perspectives (interpretations). Central to this theory is the consideration of users as pro-active metadata creators rather than mere consumers, whilst librarians are creators of a priori metadata and experts at providing structure, granularity, and interoperability to post-hoc metadata. The theory elegantly delineates metadata functions into two: enriching (metadata content) and filtering (interface). By providing underlying principles, this theory should enable standards-agencies, librarians, and systems developers to better address the changing needs of users as well as to adapt themselves to recent technological advances.

Visitors and Residents: useful social media in libraries

The Digital Natives myth is readily accepted but ultimately damaging. As students (and staff) come into our higher education system, to make blanket assumptions about their abilities with or understandings of technology based only on their date of birth is to do them a disservice.
An alternative way to explore peoples' use of the net is the Visitors and Residents model from Le Cornu and White (first brought to my attention by Donna Lanclos). I find this a proplerly useful way of thinking, which can help us as libraries provide geniunely useful social media for our users, whether they are in Visitor mode or Resident mode.
This presentation explores why the Digital Natives theory is a bust, introduces V&R, looks at the use of YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Blogs by libraries, and provides links to more detailed papers on Digital Natives, Visitors and Residents, and other insightful viewpoints.

Visitors and Residents: useful social media in libraries

The Digital Natives myth is readily accepted but ultimately damaging. As students (and staff) come into our higher education system, to make blanket assumptions about their abilities with or understandings of technology based only on their date of birth is to do them a disservice.
An alternative way to explore peoples' use of the net is the Visitors and Residents model from Le Cornu and White (first brought to my attention by Donna Lanclos). I find this a proplerly useful way of thinking, which can help us as libraries provide geniunely useful social media for our users, whether they are in Visitor mode or Resident mode.
This presentation explores why the Digital Natives theory is a bust, introduces V&R, looks at the use of YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Blogs by libraries, and provides links to more detailed papers on Digital Natives, Visitors and Residents, and other insightful viewpoints.

The MUNPARLAS (Muntinlupa, Parañaque, Las Piñas) Library Association, Inc., (MLAI) is pleased to invite you to attend the Association’s Seminar-Workshop on “Accreditation Readiness & Challenges of School Administrators and Library Personnel including Senior High.”
This professional activity will be held on August 17, 2018 from 8am to 12noon at the AVR, Flex Hall, De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, University Ave, Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa, 1780 Metro Manila.
Also, the 13th General Assembly will be held on the same day, Friday, 1:30 pm onwards followed by the Formal Induction of the new Board and its Officers for 2018-2020 and the Awarding Ceremonies will proceed immediately after the general meeting. Please come in business attire.
Seminar registration begins at 7:00 am for a fee of Php400.00 for MLAI members; Php500.00 for Non-MLAI members inclusive of lecture & certificate, snacks and lunch. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
