Course objectives 
-Thiscourseintroducesstudentstothefundamentalsofmaterialsscienceandengineeringwithemphasisonatomicbonding,crystalstructuresanddefectsinmetals. 
-Itwillintroducestudentstothevariousclassesofmaterialsincludingmetals, ceramics,polymers,andcompositesandtheirfundamentalstructures. 
-Thecoursewillalsoprovidebasicdiffusionmechanisms,metalsolidification, phasediagramsandheattreatmentprocesses. 
-Attheendofthecourse,studentsshouldbeabletoapplytheknowledgeofatomicbondingandcrystalstructurestopredictthephysicalandmechanicalbehaviourofmaterials,andusetheprinciplesofphasediagramsanddiffusiontothedesignofmaterialsandtheirproperties
Course Outcomes 
CO1 -Identifyand describethe types of atomic bonding and crystal structures in crystalline materials, and sketchcrystal planes and directions. 
CO2 -Explainthe solidification process of metals and alloys, and sketchand interpretbinary phase diagrams. 
CO3 -Apply and relateIron-Carbon phase diagram, isothermal transformation (IT) and time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagrams to steel heat treatments. 
CO4 -Identifythe types of metals (ferrous and non-ferrous) and non- metalsand relatetheir mechanical properties to engineering applications. 
CO5 -Searchfor relevant information related to materials from various sources

•3x Quiz = 10% 
•1x assignment = 10%

•>80% of lecture hours as required for the subject. 
•The student will be prohibited from attending any lecture and assessment activities upon failure to comply the above requirement. Zero mark will be given to the subject. 
2. Punctuality –later than 20 minutes, attendance =0 
3. Tutorial Class –compulsory 
4. Student Activities –Quiz, assignment, tutorials, notes – via UTM elearning.
