Outline as per the curriculum:
MODULE I (10 hours): The electronic structure of atoms, Types of atomic and molecular bonds;
ionic bonding; covalent bonding; metallic bonding; secondary bonding; mixed bonding;
hybridization. Energy bands in metals, insulators and semiconductors
MODULE II (10 hours): Basic crystallography. Defects and dislocations
MODULE III (8 hours): Diffusion. Phase rule and phase diagrams
MODULE IV (10 hours): Types of Materials: Polymers, metals and alloys, semiconductors,
ceramics, composites
MODULE V (10 hours): Properties: optical, magnetic, mechanical, electrical, thermal. Corrosion
and material degradation. Selected topics and case studies
Evaluation plan:
• Continuous evaluation: 25%
o Class Tests (15%)
o Tutorials/Case Studies/Seminars (10%)
• Mid-semester examination: 25%
• End-semester examination: 50%

Expected outcomes:
CO1: Students will be able to describe the type of bonding and categorize different engineering
materials for various applications
CO2: To correlate the mechanical / functional / magnetic / thermal / electrochemical behavior of
materials on structure, composition, processing
CO3: To understand different properties exhibited by materials such as strength, elongation,
wear,
creep and design a component by careful material selection for long-term sustainability
CO4: To have a basic knowledge of different notations used in metallurgy and materials science
such as defects, dislocation, glass transition, etc.
