Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. 7. Reading - How Poison Came Into the World (page 188)
Do Now:
Legends are stories that
come down from the past,
based on the traditions of
a people or region.
The Hero is the main character in a legend
who usually does something brave to help
others.
Personification is the assignment of human
characteristics to an animal, thing, or idea.
8. Reading - How Poison Came Into the World (page 188)
• The hero in a legend usually has special
qualities, including unusual powers.
• Authors use personification to support
the traits of the heroes and villains in a
legend. For example, a mouse who talks and
acts bravely might be a hero and a coyote
who talks and plots evil deeds against the
hero might be a villain.
9. Reading - How Poison Came Into the World (page 188)
Connect and Compare
1. What are some ways that the author
personifies the plant and the animals?
The plant is a problem solver, and the animals
respond like humans.
10. Reading - How Poison Came Into the World (page 188)
Connect and Compare
2. What is the purpose of this legend?
It explains how snakes and wasps got poison.
11. Reading - How Poison Came Into the World (page 188)
Connect and Compare
3. Think about "How Poison Came Into the
World" and Rattlers! Compare how each
author gives information about nature.
The author of "Rattlers!" writes a
nonfiction article based on information
about nature, whereas the author of the
legend uses similar information to build a
fictional story.
14. Math - Repeated Addition
Multiplication is a fast way of adding a series
of numbers.
3 x 5 means to add 3 together 5 times or
3+3+3+3+3
15. Math - Commutative Property of Multiplication
The commutative property of multiplication
simply means it does not matter which
number is first when you write the problem.
16. Math - Zeros
Multiplication is repeated addition so:
0x3=0+0+0= 0
Any number times zero is always zero!
17. Math - Ones
Multiplication is repeated addition so:
1x4=1+1+1+1= 4
Any number times one is always itself!
18. Math - Twos
Multiplication is repeated addition so:
2x4=4+4=8
Any number times two is the number doubled!
2 x 4 would be 4 + 4 or 8
2 x 6 would be 6 + 6 or 12
19. Math - Fives
If you are multiplying five times an even number, take half of the number and
put a zero after it
For example 5 x 6 (6 is even)
• take half of 6 (30)
• add a zero - 30
If you are multiplying five times an odd number, subtract 1 from the number
and halve the number
For example 5 x 7 (7 is odd)
• Subtract one from 7 (6)
• take half of 6 (3)
• Add a five - 35
20. Math - Nines
This is the one less = nine method
Subtract one from the number you are multiplying by.
• 9 x 5 (one less than 5 is 4)
The two numbers that make up the answer will equal 9.
• The last number in the answer is 5
• 4+5=9
Here is another example
• 9x8
• One less than 8 is 7. So the first number in the answer is 7
• 7+2=9
• So the second number in the answer is 2.
21. Math - 3 x 4 and 7 x 8
These two multiplication facts are as easy as counting
• 12 = 3 x 4 (notice the numbers go 1, 2, 3, 4)
• 56 = 7 x 8 (these also go in order 5, 6, 7, 8)
Remember these sentences:
• One two (12) equals three times four (3 x 4)
• Five six (56) equals seven times eight (7 x 8)
Because of the commutative property of multiplication:
• 3x4=4x3
• 7x8=8x7
22. Math - Sevens
Sevens times table is considered the hardest table to
memorize, but it can be as easy as 1 2 3
