The 2/4th Field Ambulance played a crucial role in providing medical care during the Kokoda Track campaign. Led by Lt. Col. Arthur Hobson, the unit consisted of officers and other ranks who worked tirelessly to treat wounded soldiers amid difficult terrain, weather, supply and enemy challenges. Captain Alan Watson provided emergency dental care to over 200 patients and administered general anesthesia, while also organizing the aeromedical evacuation of hundreds of casualties. The proximity of the Field Ambulance's surgical team enabled immediate treatment of severe wounds. Despite shortages, the unit improvised constantly to care for soldiers and evacuate them from the frontlines.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major health issue, especially for the military. TBI is defined as a head injury causing loss of consciousness, confusion, or neurological issues. In the military, TBI is commonly caused by IED explosions. Management of mild TBI involves initial assessment, education, rest, and monitoring for symptoms. If symptoms persist, treatment may include medications to address headaches or cognitive issues, though evidence is limited, and non-pharmacological interventions should also be considered.
A high-level introduction on agile development methods. Going over some concepts, used terminology and a couple of slides specifically on SCRUM and Kanban.

ETL 523 Presentation: The Digital DivideTeneal Morley
This document discusses the digital divide and strategies for addressing it. It defines the digital divide as the gap between those who have access to new technologies and those who do not. The National Broadband Network is presented as a way to revolutionize education and bridge the divide in Australia. There are also alternative views that there are multiple divides or that the divide does not exist. Recommendations include developing a school committee to address the issue, getting community involvement, and providing additional support to struggling students.
This study examined spatial correlation of wildlife-friendly landscaping features between neighboring properties in residential transects near forest preserves in Chicago. Yard surveys were conducted on properties in 26 transects to assess vegetation layers and wildlife features. Mantel tests found low overall correlation between neighboring yards, though some transects like Wilmette showed higher similarity over longer distances. Front yards tended to be more alike between neighbors than back yards. While wildlife features showed some localized correlation, levels dropped off rapidly with distance. The results suggest neighbors primarily influence only immediate adjacent properties in their landscaping choices.
This document summarizes several stories of individuals who lived during the Spanish colonial period in Latin America. It describes people who found ways to adapt to and survive within the colonial system, while still maintaining aspects of their indigenous identities and beliefs.
The stories include Diego Vasicuio, a native priest in Peru who secretly worshipped the old god Sorimana despite Spanish attempts at conversion. Martin Ocelotl was a clandestine cult leader in Mexico who was imprisoned for his predictions but later baptized Catholic and found ways to continue indigenous practices. Juan de Morga made a pact with the devil after being brutally beaten by his master but later repented.

Mary Langcake, director of trauma at St. George Hospital in Sydney, discusses her experiences deploying to Afghanistan as part of AUSMTF2 from July to October 2008. She describes the high-intensity trauma experienced, including treating over 130 casualties and performing 158 surgical procedures. She struggled with the emotional challenges of treating many penetrating injuries and casualties, including children. After returning, she was diagnosed with major depression and PTSD. While the deployment had both positive and negative impacts, she believes more pre-deployment training and psychological support could help trauma teams be "ready" for such high-intensity missions.

The document discusses histograms in Oracle's cost-based optimizer (CBO). Histograms help improve cardinality estimates when data is skewed, leading to better query plans. They were introduced in Oracle 8 and are now automatically collected, with the number of buckets and type (frequency or height balanced) depending on the number of distinct values. The document provides background on histograms and how the CBO uses them to estimate selectivity and cardinality.
The document discusses how brands can build genuine relationships with customers in the digital age. It argues that brands must truly care about customers' needs and desires to succeed. Brands should use digital tools like social media for two-way conversations to better understand customers. And they must deliver personalized experiences through both digital and physical interactions to build loyalty over time. At its core, the customer experience should not change - brands need to continue fulfilling basic needs as well as smaller delights to stay relevant as technology evolves.
This document discusses background radiation and provides pictorial examples. It notes that all humans are exposed to ionizing radiation from natural and artificial sources. The main natural sources of background radiation are radioactive elements inside the body, cosmic rays from space, and radioactive elements in the air, water, and earth's crust. Examples are given of imaging various everyday objects, foods, buildings, and gemstones to visualize the radiation they emit. The document cautions against using background radiation alone to explain risk without considering dose rate effects. It also proposes imaging "hormesis stones" claimed to have health benefits from radiation exposure.
ILFFJC - Clustering and Food Hubs in IllinoisMichal Bularz
This document discusses using GIS and spatial analysis methods to identify suitable locations for food aggregation hubs in Illinois. It analyzes farm and market data to create density maps showing supply and demand clusters. It then performs a weighted overlay analysis combining these maps with data on available labor and arable land. The analysis aims to determine optimal locations for facilities to aggregate locally grown food for distribution to wholesale markets, addressing infrastructure barriers small farmers face.
The document summarizes the experiences of Australian POWs during World War 1. Over 25% of the approximately 217 Australian troops captured by the Turks died in Turkish camps, which had poor conditions with little food and access to medical care. Prisoners were forced to work on railway construction far from camps. German camps also lacked sanitation, adequate housing, and sufficient food. POWs who disobeyed Germans could be sent to a prison known as the "Black Hole of Lille" with starvation rations and forced labor. The Red Cross supplied food and clothing parcels to POWs. Repatriation was quicker by Central Powers but slower by Allies, with some using POWs as forced labor until the 1920s.
This document provides a timeline of important events and discoveries in dentistry and related fields from 1901 to 1972. Some key highlights include:
- In 1901, William Rollins published over 200 articles warning about the potential dangers of x-rays and advocated for precautions when using them.
- In 1937, Bernard Fantus opened the world's first blood bank and coined the term.
- In 1955, Michael Buonocore described the acid etch technique, laying the foundation for dental bonding.
- The first commercial electric toothbrush was introduced in 1960.
- In 1971, Hall and Jako described tissue reactions to laser light and wound healing, advancing the use of lasers in dentistry.

Dominique Jean Larrey was a pioneering French military surgeon during the Napoleonic Wars who made important innovations, including developing the first field ambulances to rapidly transport wounded soldiers. He participated in over 60 battles and was renowned for his skill, performing up to 200 amputations in a day. Larrey was respected even by enemy forces and worked to treat all wounded soldiers regardless of which side they fought for. His medical writings covered many conditions and he made advances such as using ice or snow to relieve pain from wounds.
Surgery before anesthesia and antibiotics was fast and invariably fatal. It involved potential risk of more damage than benefits. We still have many surgeons, managing benefits to some patients.
This document provides background information on lower limb amputations. It discusses the history of amputation dating back to ancient times and developments over centuries. It defines amputation, provides classifications, and outlines epidemiology, indications, investigations, surgical principles, complications and prognosis of lower limb amputations. The document discusses various types of foot, midfoot, hindfoot and above-knee amputations and their techniques.

1) The USNS Mercy, a Navy hospital ship, was deployed to provide medical relief to victims of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami in Indonesia.
2) The Mercy carried a 1,000 bed hospital and full radiology department, but relied heavily on civilian volunteer medical staff to supplement its crew of Navy medical personnel.
3) The Mercy's radiology services played a key role in diagnosing and treating tsunami victims, performing thousands of x-rays, CT scans, and ultrasound exams to aid international field hospitals that lacked advanced imaging capabilities. This helped improve care and outcomes for many severely ill patients.
The Chernobyl disaster was the worst nuclear power plant accident in history. In 1986, Reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine exploded and caught fire during a safety test, releasing massive amounts of radiation into the atmosphere. Over 100,000 people were evacuated and hundreds of square miles of land were severely contaminated, with higher rates of cancer and other illnesses reported among those exposed. The cleanup required thousands of liquidators and cost billions. While a sarcophagus was constructed to contain the reactor, the effects of the radiation release continue to impact the region for decades to come.

The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear reactor accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine in 1986. It resulted in a massive release of radiation and is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history. The explosion destroyed reactor number four and forced the evacuation of over 300,000 people from the surrounding area due to high radiation levels. Many still live in contaminated areas and the long-term health effects are still unknown.
World War 1 began in July 1914 when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, starting a global conflict between the Allied and Central powers. Propaganda promoted enlisting for the war. Life in the trenches for soldiers was miserable, as trenches flooded, attracted rats and lice causing disease, and exposed men to weather extremes that could lead to injuries like trench foot. Around 8.5-12 million soldiers died during the war, with one third of deaths occurring in the trenches from gas attacks, crossing no man's land between trenches, or other trench conditions.
The Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. During a safety test on reactor 4, a surge of power caused an explosion that blew the reactor apart and released massive amounts of radiation. Hundreds of thousands of people had to be evacuated and the area remains contaminated. The disaster highlighted issues with the Soviet response and lessons about safety culture, emergency preparedness, and open communication.
The Afrika Post was an Allied propaganda newspaper dropped behind enemy lines in North Africa to convince German troops that continued resistance was useless. The Camp Hearne POW camp in Hearne, Texas held over 3,000 German POWs captured in North Africa in 1943. The POWs were generally well-treated and had access to leisure activities according to the Geneva Convention. By 1945, most of the POWs originally from Rommel's Afrika Corps had been repatriated to Europe while a few hundred Japanese POWs passed through the camp in 1945 before it closed later that year. In 2010, the site of the former Camp Hearne was opened as a museum to preserve the history of the camp.

The document also describes CPIT's generic self-assessment process of stocktaking, evaluative conversations, reporting, and closing loops.
General physicians known as consultant physician/pediatricians (CPPs) have undergone rigorous medical training but their skills vary widely. They are well-trained in diagnosing and managing complex medical conditions. CPPs could serve in several roles for the ADF, including providing consultations for individual service members, advising on health policy, and working in level 2 or 3 medical facilities. A short modular training program could help update CPPs on relevant areas like emergency medicine and tropical diseases to better prepare them for operational roles.
CAPT Neil Westphalen provided an overview of the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN) response to the presence of non-exempt asbestos containing materials (ACM) in its stores system and aboard ships. The initial responses included appointing lead authorities to manage the ACM response across Defence and within the Navy. Comcare inspections found ACM aboard some ships and establishments, and a full audit was ordered of all ADF units. Internal Navy audits also found ACM aboard ships. Training and revised procedures were implemented to safely manage and dispose of ACM, and health surveillance was increased through standardized questionnaires. The presentation concluded that while an issue, the ACM was generally in good condition with low risk to personnel health.
The document summarizes the medical aspects of the sinking of HMAS SYDNEY II after encountering the German raider KORMORAN in 1941. It describes that SYDNEY had 10 medical staff including 2 doctors and was likely hit by over 200,000 shell fragments, resulting in over 70% casualties of the 645 crew including 225 killed in action and 225 wounded in action. The document pays tribute to the medical personnel who all perished when the ship sank with no survivors.

This document summarizes a study that found significant inaccuracies and inconsistencies in anthropometric measurements of student pilots taken at different military and recruiting centers. Measurements of sitting height, in particular, frequently differed by more than 5 centimeters between initial recordings and later measurements, with under-recording being more common. The inaccuracies appeared greater for measurements near anthropometric limits and at some military centers compared to recruiting centers. The document suggests improved training, standardized equipment and procedures, and potentially centralized anthropometry could help address the unreliable measurements that may not adequately inform pilot selection.

The document discusses the controversy over reported declines in Australian suicide statistics since 1997. While some studies have found significant reductions, others argue the statistics are unreliable due to misclassification of deaths and incomplete reporting to the national database. To address these issues, a national committee was formed in 2009 to standardize suicide reporting procedures across jurisdictions.
This document summarizes the search and discovery of the wreck of the Australian Hospital Ship Centaur, which was sunk by a Japanese submarine in 1943 with the loss of 268 lives, including medical staff, nurses and patients. It outlines the chronology of events, including plotting the last known position using eyewitness accounts. Sonar images and photos show identifying features of the wreck that match details of the Centaur, such as its distinctive bell. The wreck was located on site in waters around 4,000 meters deep, providing closure for relatives after 74 years.

The US army public health command initiative transforming public health serv...Leishman Associates
The US Army Public Health Command Initiative aims to transform public health services for the Army. It will establish the US Army Public Health Command to provide centralized public health oversight and services. This will integrate various public health programs and functions currently spread across different commands. The Public Health Command will be headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio and have regional commands located worldwide to provide public health support and services to all Army installations.
The document discusses the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness construct, which aims to improve the health and well-being of soldiers across four pillars: nutrition, physical conditioning, mental health/resilience, and moral/ethical development. It does this through initiatives like nutrition education, physical training programs integrated across the force generation cycle, and mental health support from pre-deployment to post-deployment reintegration. The goal is to enhance soldiers' fighting power by developing their intellect, emotions, motivation, and leadership.
Case report of thoracic spine fractures from ied blast in armoured vehicle Y...Leishman Associates
This document summarizes three cases of thoracic spine fractures in soldiers from a vehicle IED strike in Afghanistan. All three soldiers were seated and wearing body armor at the time of the blast. Two soldiers had compression fractures of T12 that were not initially suspected based on examination alone. CT scans revealed the fractures. Both were treated non-operatively. The third soldier had a burst fracture of T12 also seen on CT scan. A literature review found that spine fractures are common in IED strikes and physical exams can miss injuries. CT scans are recommended to evaluate all back pain cases from IED attacks. Future research on seat design, restraints, and protection from flexion injuries from body armor is discussed.
The document summarizes a study conducted by the RAAF Institute of Aviation Medicine to measure the real-world effectiveness of foam earplugs when used by untrained users, compared to laboratory tests. 43 aircrew had their earplug insertion technique and noise attenuation measured before and after a brief insertion training. Results showed that before training, earplugs provided significantly less attenuation than factory specifications, but attenuation improved by an average of 10 dB after training. The study demonstrates the importance of proper insertion technique training to maximize hearing protection and reduce noise exposure risks for aircrew.
This document discusses hypothermia, its complications, and strategies for detection and management. It notes that core temperatures below 35°C quadruple mortality in severe trauma patients. Data from the Queensland Trauma Registry shows 13% of trauma patients had temperatures below 35°C, and over half of hypothermia cases occurred after hospital admission. The document advocates for active warming techniques to treat hypothermia, as passive warming alone is ineffective. Specific active warming recommendations include using devices like the F2010 Hypothermia Alert.
The document outlines reforms to improve mental health in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). It discusses establishing a Joint Health Command to oversee mental health services and implementing 52 recommendations from a 2009 report. Key reforms include increasing the mental health workforce by 50%, implementing prevention and resilience programs, improving research, and enhancing rehabilitation and transition support. The goal is to optimize mental health and wellbeing in the ADF through a strong foundation, mitigating operational risks, enabling recovery, and building relationships and partnerships.
