Representation is something that had been emphasized in the past few years. Especially, for people
color. It matters because it affects the way people, particulary children, view themselves as they go
throughout life. For this activity, I headed down to Wal Mart to take note of group based differences in
what is being sold in the store.
It was surprising to see the diversity of Barbie dolls that were on the shelves. There were several
Black dolls, a few Latina dolls, and a couple of Asian dolls. There was even a Black Barbie where the
packaging had a little sign on it that mentioned activated curls to mimic the hair textures of black
women. Of course, there was plenty of white Barbie dolls, considering that the brand itself when it
started only had white dolls. Unfortunately, Wal Mart does not sell G.I. Joe action figures. However,
the action figures that were sold there were mostly white men or non terrestrial characters that are

Another memoir? It feels like the teachers in every grade meet and come up with the same
assignments. It s pointless. At least it s like a free period. It s why I sat in the back. I can be fully
secluded and do what I want, even though it s a large open library. Jam out, watch some videos,
whatever. I won t do well on this paper or in this class, but forget it. School just doesn t seem
important compared to anything else in my life. In every class I just sit and think of all the better

I m in the library so I m sure they won t care too much that I m reading instead of doing actual work.
Aside from music, skateboarding is the other half of my life. I ve probable written more stories about
it than music. I don t have an end goal in it, I just love it. It s fun weather I m progressing or not ;
chilling or trying some banger. But just as music goes, it takes up so much time. It s always one of the
two. Thinking of guitar riffs in math, thinking of some handrail to grind in Physics. The skatepark is
right near the school too. Every period I walk past a door and consider going for it. I m actually
getting kind of good too. It s torture, I just picture the progression I could be making. Landing new
tricks, stacking some decent clips, it s awesome. Not to mention all the hemies. They hype it up and
then everything just turns into a party. I ve always wanted to go on a music/skate tour. One of my
bands would hop in a van and go touring playing shows. Along the way we d skate, hit spots and try
and make a short video edit. That would be the dream life... Sadly I m stuck in school. Not to mention
all the other things eating up my time. Although there s things I enjoy, there s things I m not fond of
like work. My job isn t the worst. The pay is fair, the people are kind. Although if I didn t need money
in life I wouldn t be wasting my time. Who would? Then there s any work my family gives me. They
don t usually give me work, but that s why I do it. Aside from that there s all the school work outside
of school. It seems some teachers are beginning to understand that we have lives to live and that no
one does homework. It s all just pointless busy work
