Demographic Transition Theory
Do we live in an overcrowded world? Discuss the demographic transition theories as well as the
theories of Malthus and his critics before coming up with your own informed opinion
Overcrowding seems at this point to be an inevitable and freighting consequence of urbanization and
global population growth. But to answer if the world is overcrowded is highly relative to whom the
question is being asked. To those knowledgeable about the demographic transition theories will note
that the theories have nothing really to do with answering if the world is overcrowded. They could use
the mortality and fertility rate charts to see what countries are where on the scales but there is not
anywhere to label when the world is overcrowded. The theories can definitely point to trends in
fertility and mortality but it would hard to be able to conclude anything about an overcrowded world.
Since death and birth go hand in hand there always seems to be somewhat of a balance. If the question
was asked to the then alive Thomas Malthus he would probably answer yes to the world being
overcrowded. He would most likely share his theory on exponential population growth where
populations grown increasingly overtime always more than the previous year. Wherein populace is
growing but the supply of food and other necessities are now yielding at the same rate. He was able to
notice that high volume populace change was apparent and could be debilitating to societies and the
globe. Personally I believe the

Native American Culture In America
What is Native American culture? Native American culture is recognized in the United States. It has
over five hundred tribes and village, the Native American culture has been spread throughout the
entire globe. The main religions and the main traditions of the Native Americans were based on the
culture of Animism. Animism is a commonly shared doctrine or belief of the indigenous people and
many other Indian Tribes that have been found in North America. There is an enormous amount of
languages that the Native Americans speak. There were as many as nine hundred thousand inhabitants
with over three hundred languages ( Native American Blog ). Some of the federally recognized tribes
vary in population and they vary in land base. Many of the tribes all have their own culture, their own
language, and their own history. Every tribe has its own unique customs. Some of the tribes even have
distinct styles of housing, dressing, and eating.
Native American tribes have effectively governed themselves for hundreds of years. Native Americans
have even developed many different systems of nurturing and teaching their youth. Today, many tribes
that are located in the United States are reviving their cultures and even their traditions. Every single
tribe has its own unique rich culture. Whether the tribe is founded in language or ceremony, it
strengthens America as a nation today. Although it was not always like this, there have been many
obstacles in the way. At one point federal laws and policies had completely prohibited tribes from
practicing any of their religions and any of their ceremonies. It was unfair, Tribes lacked control of
their own ceremonial items and even their human remains until the 1990 Native American Graves
Protection and Repatriation Act required federal agencies and institutions that receive federal funding
to return Native American cultural items to their descendants and tribes ( Native Americans
Destroying ). That law was not completely repealed until the 1978 American Indian Religious
Freedom Act. Which was then later amended to protect the Native American Church s ceremonial use.
Why did Americans adopt their culture? The Native Americans had an extremely beautiful culture.

Dream Catcher Research Paper
Dream Catcher
Background
Dreams are series of thought, stories, ideas, emotions that happen unintentionally in the mind during
certain stages of sleep. Human sleep occurs in several cycles during the night, each cycles consisting
of five stages. Light sleep to very deep sleep are ranging during the first four stages, EEG machine
shows that the brain activities are decreasing by demonstrating the electrical wave rhythms from first
to fourth stage. The four stages can categorized as non REM sleep (or slow wave sleep). However,
during the fifth stage, there are increased activity of the brain which is associated with rapid eye
movement (REM). Due to the increased activity of the brain, most of the dreams happen during REM
sleep. People dreams all night long. According to scientific American, each person dreams three to
five times per night, some may up to seven ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I will combine electroencephalogram (EEG) which functions as recorder to record the electrical
activity of brain by using electrophysiological monitoring method into the pillow. This called Dream
Catcher. Dream Catcher record the electrical activities of the brain and interpret it into images. It helps
to visualize and record the dreams so that people can see and hear the dreams physically. A USB port
is inserted to the pillow so that the information can be stored and transmitted through wire. Dream
catcher is designed for everyone, everyone can record his dreams.
Benefits
Dreams is a way to access to vital information that is not remember when people are awake. It helps
people to gain the knowledge about themselves and increase self awareness and self healing. It can
helps people to stay away from major depression as dreams play an important role as a window of the
secret desires and feelings. People can reduce their stress effectively by knowing their dreams.

Implementation Of A Large Quality Management System
Munson Healthcare includes nine owned or affiliated hospitals with more than 7,000 employees. It
provides services to patients from 30 counties in Michigan spread through the northern half of the
Lower Peninsula as well as the eastern half of the Upper Peninsula. As part of the organization s True
North initiative, the patient is central to all processes. In this large and varied organization,
implementation of a large quality management system will help ensure that we meet this goal.
The International Organization for Standardization developed a series of written quality standards
(Evans, 2014). The purpose was to standardize quality requirements between European countries in
the common market and countries wanting to do business with them (Evans, 2014). This paper will
review the ISO 9000 standards, the benefits of implementing an ISO compliant quality management
system (QMS), and describe challenges to the successful implementation of such a program in a
hospital system.
ISO 9000 (Quality Management)
ISO 9000 Standards The ISO 9000 series developed by the International Organization for
Standardization includes requirements of a QMS (9001) and guidelines to make a QMS more effective
and efficient (9004) (van den Heuvel, Koning, Bogers, Berg van Dijen, 2005). In 2008, the
International Organization for Standardization clarified the language in the 9001 standards but it
remained comparable to the 2000 version (Hunt, 2008). The standards are being updated in 2015 and

The Eighth Sin In Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales
The Eighth Sin Of the Seven Deadly Sins, there are powerful arguments for each one being more
deadly or worse than the others. However, there is an Eighth that is inherently the worst sin. Each of
the Seven Sins are socially acceptable in small doses. For example, it is not a sin to be proud of
something you ve made or to mad at a situation or to even simply want what someone else has. All
that becomes sin, however, when it is blown out of moderation, and when you go out of your way to
amplify the feelings and act on them, like becoming so proud you actively try to destroy others works
or become so wanting you steal, take, or destroy others property. This Eighth Sin, though, is not like
this. You cannot simply act it out in moderation, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This action can also be projected onto other people, deliberately causing them to become more
depressed and losing hope. To actively make yourself and others around you lose will and heart is to
kill yourself and others not only possibly physically, but spiritually. It is the eighth sin and quite
possibly the worst sin because it affects not only you, but primarily those around you.
Integrating despondence into Canterbury Tales would simply be another tale told by one of the
pilgrims. This tale could be about a desponder whose sin catches up to him or her after his or her
regular hopeless attitude and projection of it onto others causes a catastrophic event with them
negative results on those around them. The moral of the tale about despond would be simply stated,
though sometimes difficult to do; this moral would be to support others and do your best to instill
them with confidence, to keep their spirits and their hopes up. We can learn through helping others not
just physically but emotionally, we help ourselves just the same. Staying despondent creates a cycle of
hopelessness and depression that may never be broken, and the cycle has no positive

The Slave, By Julius Lester
Everyone has a story to tell about their lives, their experiences. In class, we read the book titled To Be
a Slave, by Julius Lester. It compiled the experiences of ex slaves that they had during slavery, each of
their own stories, or thoughts, their first person accounts. Slavery in America started in 1619 when
Africans were shipped to Jamestown for labor. From then on, a long, cruel period started for them,
being enslaved and denied basic allow the human rights. However, are these experiences important or
not for contemporary Americans to read about? Yes, these first person accounts are important for them
to read, for they allow the voices of the long oppressed to be heard, it helps us learn from past
mistakes as to not make them again, and it gives a better understanding of the events that were not
even that long ago.
The slaves first person accounts about their experiences with slavery are important for modern
Americans to read because it allows their long oppressed voices to be heard. Slaves of the 1600 s were
oppressed for an extreme amount of time put down, silenced, degraded, dehumanized. Their words did
not meet the ears of whites without punishment, unless it was for the benefit of the slave owner, like
when a slave betrayed other slaves about revolt plans, or even after the events of slavery when blacks
were paid to lie to other blacks. The white folks would pay n*****s to lie to the rest of the n*****s to

option. Blackstone feels that it is for the good of the society that women are treated this way. He lived

Search Of An Innovative General Education Program
In search of an innovative general education program I came across a list of twenty five best colleges
and universities. On that list is the College of Atlantic which caught my attention. Why? The school
offers only one major program in Human Ecology and all students in the college are subject to it but in
a different way (Young et al, 2006). As opposed to Southern Adventist University a traditional
cafeteria style.
The atmosphere of the campus is exceptional because of the surrounding sea Hence, . The world is not

However, Southern Adventist University, a traditional higher education institution established by
Seventh Day Adventist Church offers a wide number of programs or a chain of programs from
Certificate to the doctoral level, where students choose which area or program to major in. This
institution, unlike College of Atlantis nurtures Christlikeness and encourages the pursuits of truths,
wholeness, and a life of service to its students and society at large. This school embrace the integration

Primary Brain Tumors Essay
According to PubMed، brain tumors are expressed by a collection of neoplasms which are arising
from different cells, both from within the brain parenchyma and from systemic tumors that have
metastasized and spread to the brain. Throughout history, malignant brain tumors constitute such a
small percentage of overall cancer incidence; therefore, little training has been provided for these
tumors. Most these tumors are responsible for the majority of deaths from primary brain cancers. To
date, primary brain tumors, whether malignant or nonmalignant, have devastating consequences (1).

Why The Airline Southwest Meets Or Exceeds The National...
The question addressed is if the airline Southwest meets or exceeds the national rate for on time
performance at the Oklahoma City airport. The data collected from the BTS is categorized into either
on time or not on time for Oklahoma City and nationwide. The BTS data was a complete collection
from participating airlines, which consist of airlines with 1 percent or more of scheduled domestic
passenger revenues. A Chi Squared Goodness of Fit test was selected for use.
The Chi Squared Goodness of Fit test offered a method to compare categorical data such as on time
performance or not on time performance. The two tailed hypothesis test is Ho: Southwest at
Oklahoma City airport has the same on time performance as the national rate. Ha: Southwest at
Oklahoma City airport does not have the same on time performance as the national rate. As the data
was for 2015 this allowed for 12 months of data enabling a df =11 with a desired significance level of
95% α = .05, power of β = .80, and medium effect size of 0.30 resulting in a desired sample size of
187 which was exceeded as the data includes 17,786 operations.
Results
The BTS reported a total of 5,819,079 operations nationally with an on time rate of 79.92% and
Oklahoma had 17,786 with an on time rate of 77.29%. The national on time rate was applied to the
total operations by southwest as shown in Table 1 and resulted in the expected delays in the expected

The Suez Crisis
In the Suez Crisis, not all other ways of resolving the problem should have been tried first because it
was a surprise attack on Egypt. The British did not try other ways of solving the crisis and did not try
diplomacy with Egypt. The British took prompt action against Nasser because they feared that their
power in the Middle East would be compromised because of him. (Dooley) They colluded with
France and Israel so that they would all attack Egypt and forcefully recover the Suez Canal. Prime
Minister Eden did not consider many options besides war because he saw a parallel between how
Hitler had begun by remilitarizing the Rhineland; Nasser had expropriated the Suez Canal. (Kunz 97)
Consequently, he did not want to try to appease Nasser because he feared that the Egyptians would
influence the rest of the Middle East and cut off their oil supply. Although war should have been a last
resort the British s immediate impulse was to hit Nasser hard and quickly (Dooley). Clearly,
diplomacy was not considered because the British hoped to seize the Suez Canal by force. This is why
they secretly colluded in hopes of bombarding the Egyptians and forcing them to relinquish control of
the canal. Almost immediately, Britain with France started well publicized military preparations in the
Mediterranean they hoped to force Egypt to agree to give the Suez Canal to the international
community. (Epstein) When Egypt refused British, France and Israel retaliated against the Egyptians.

The Aztec Empire Of The Nineteenth Century
The Aztec Empire of the 14th and 15th centuries was one of the most successful and powerful
Mesoamerican kingdoms at that time. The community of people began in the middle of a lake and
eventually became the capital of an empire. The Aztecs were comprised of multi ethnic and multi
lingual individuals that lived in a large area that stretched from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf coast and
housed over fifteen million people (Schmal). Their ability to be successful and have a powerful
dominance in their quest was centered on their religious beliefs that were innate within everyone
(Meyer 54). These beliefs drove them to conquest, to expand through the regions and to build
wonderful temples. The Aztecs or as they called themselves, the ... Show more content on

The Aztecs built their city of Tenochtitlan on the site, which today is found in the center of Mexico
City. At its height, Tenochtitlan had a multi ethnic population of more than 200,000 people, which
made it one of the world s largest cities in the early 1500s (Meyer 54). The Aztec nomads had vivid
visions of what they wanted and what they wanted to leave; troubling times to include intermarriages,
and the local chiefs being forced to live in Mayapan as hostages (Meyer 48). There was a lot of cruelty
and war within the previous living conditions and as a result these resilient people went back to their
roots relying on their knowledge of cultivation, family connection and strong community life. These
are the things, in my opinion, that gave them the strength to move on and to find peace in their lives.
Their ability to be extraordinary in all they accomplished in the unity of the Aztec nation was very
significant in their lives at the time. The city of Tenochtitlan consisted of a large number of priests and
craftsmen which supported the economy that relied on extensive trade for the necessities and for
luxury items (Time Life Books 49). Tenochtitlan was the epitome of an urban center. The population
alone, coupled with the great markets where they sold their goods allowed the city to have the
beginnings of economic class. The city was divided into different groups that specialized in a specific
craft or trade, such as rope making or pot making.

Islam Gender Equality
Islam has gradually claimed its title as the second largest religion in the world after Christianity
(Severson, 2011). Muslims make up majority of the population in 49 countries (Desilver, 2017), but
within those countries, approximately forty five of them are inhabited by half a billion Muslim women
(Galloway, 2014). Throughout history, women have been disregarded, dehumanized, disenfranchised,
and censored in society. Within Islam, it has been widely believed that Muslim women are secluded
within their homes. To many, this seclusion highlights a religious culture that oppresses Muslim
women. The controversy of gender inequality between Muslim men and women continues to derive
from the historical inferior position of women (Galloway, 2014). Like other religions, there are several
controversial aspects within the religion that contribute to growing issues of gender equality in society.
In this case, Islam is perceived to be the backbone of gender inequality between Muslim men and
women. It is important to put into context the social roles of women in the past, the inferior position of
women, and the cultural and traditional aspects of Islam. Issues of gender equality within Islam are
mainly derived from the interpretations of the Qur an and their religious practices. This study will
examine the effects Islam has on the role of women and how it can promote religious empowerment
towards Muslim women, and cultivate equality between the genders. It is important to consider

Contributions Of The Chicago School Of Sociology
Contributions of the Chicago School of Sociology In this essay I will describe and evaluate the
contributions, made by the Chicago School of Sociology, which refers to a group of sociologists from
the University of Chicago, who produced the first significant body of work in the area of urban
sociology, in the first half of this century. The members include such sociologists as Robert Park,
Ernest Burgess and Louis Wirth, whose work has contributed hugely to sociology and is recognized
widely as the basis of study for urban sociology. I will discuss in this essay, the studies of the Chicago

Wirth was more interested in urbanism as a way of life rather than trying to understand the shapes of
cities. He argued that urbanism cannot be simply understood by measuring population of cities.
Rather, it must be understood as a form of social existence. Wirth states that cities are the initiating
and controlling centre of economic, political and cultural life that has drawn the most remote
communities of the world into its orbit and woven diverse areas, people and activities into a cosmos.
(Wirth, 1938, p.342). Although Wirth recognised that in the density of social life in cities led to
formation of neighbourhoods that had distinct characteristics, he insisted that the more these city areas
became affected by the wider patterns of city life, the less community characteristics would survive.
(Giddens and Sutton, 2013, p.211). It is clear to see that Wirth believed that urbanism, alienated
people from one another, and weakened close bonds and families. Although he still recognized the
advantages of urbanism which created cities full of tolerance, freedom and

The Pay Gap And Gender Discrimination
Taylor Bruton
Professor Kathy Dillion
English 211
November 10, 2014
Abstract
For this paper, my objective was to investigate the pay gap and gender discrimination in the
workplace. Through systematic examination, this paper explores numerous factors correlating to the
wage gap such as occupational choices and annual earnings. On average, women have lower income
due to emphasis on familial responsibilities and desiring more accommodating work schedules than
men. The wage gap primarily exists within same occupational fields. In these fields, women were
often faced with the glass ceiling and unable to advance in higher positions because of their gender.
Women also earned less pay since less likely to ask for promotions or higher wages. In short, gender
shouldn t be a factor in measuring equal pay.

Mind the Wage Gap
Throughout history, women have typically been undermined and denied the same equal rights as men.
From the Equal Pay Act to the Paycheck Fairness Act, women have fought an uphill battle for their
gender equality. Women earn less than men in almost every job occupation regardless of their race,
age, ethnicity, or academic credibility. Most often, the emphasis that women place on family leading
to breaks in employment and a desire for more flexible working hours negatively impacts their career
trajectory, and is correlated with issue of the nationwide wage gap.

hierarchical variables that have a persuasive part in the assurance of authoritative execution.
Hierarchical culture is one such variable that has gotten much consideration in authoritative conduct
written works, on account of the key part it plays in deciding levels of hierarchical results. A typical
speculation about the part of hierarchical culture is that if an association has a solid culture by
displaying a very much coordinated and viable arrangement of particular qualities, convictions, and
practices, then it will perform at a larger amount of efficiency Given the impact of an association s
way of life on its profitability, the advancement of hypothesis to direct the investigation of the
structures and outcomes of authoritative culture is of essential significance to enhancing authoritative
execution. Associations vary in their way of life including how they see disparity inside the
association. Hierarchical stories, images, and practices flag to authoritative individuals how genuine
uniqueness in its participation will be seen. It has been found that, it is not the nearness of the differing
qualities itself that decides the impacts of the differences inside an association however, rather, the
level of openness to disparity normal for the association s individuals, work gatherings and culture.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Developed by Dr. Aaron T. Beck, Cognitive Therapy (CT), or Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), is a
form of psychotherapy in which the therapist and the client work together as a team to identify and
solve problems. Therapists help clients to overcome their difficulties by changing their thinking,
behavior, and emotional responses.
A System of Psychotherapy
Cognitive therapy is a comprehensive system of psychotherapy, and treatment is based on an
elaborated and empirically supported theory of psychopathology and personality. It has been found to
be effective in more than 400 outcome studies for a myriad of psychiatric disorders, including
depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and substance abuse, ... Show more content on

The Goal of Cognitive Therapy
The goals of cognitive therapy are to help individuals achieve a remission of their disorder and to
prevent relapse. Much of the work in sessions involves aiding individuals in solving their real life
problems and teaching them to modify their distorted thinking, dysfunctional behavior, and distressing
affect. Therapists plan treatment on the basis of a cognitive formulation of patients disorders and an
ongoing individualized cognitive conceptualization of patients and their difficulties. A developmental
framework is used to understand how life events and experiences led to the development of core
beliefs, underlying assumptions, and coping strategies, particularly in patients with personality
disorders.
A strong therapeutic alliance is a key feature of cognitive therapy. Therapists are collaborative and
function as a team with patients. They provide rationales and seek patients agreement when
undertaking interventions. They make mutual decisions about how time will be spent in a session,
which problems will be discussed, and which homework assignments patients believe will be helpful.
They engage patients in a process of collaborative empiricism to investigate the validity of the patient
s thoughts and beliefs.
Cognitive therapy is educative, and patients are taught cognitive, behavioral, and emotional regulation
skills so they can, in essence, become their own therapists. This allows

Internal Controls And The Audit Process
During the audit of the financial statements we will be assessing the internal controls in use as
mandated by the Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002. The act was designed to enhance corporate
responsibility as it relates to financial reporting issues. Section 404 covers the internal controls that
have been setup by the company. Internal controls are designed to protect the assets of a business from
misuse or loss. Internal controls also help the business to streamline processes so that goals can be
achieved at the best rate of return from the use of available assets. The remainder of this letter contains
an overview of section 404 and other regulations relating to the audit of internal controls and a
synopsis of internal control risks that have been identified within Apollo Shoes Inc. We will also
describe the relationship between internal controls and the audit process as well as outlining our
responsibilities in detecting and reporting fraud.
Section 404 of the act requires all publicly traded companies establish internal controls and procedures
for financial reporting. The system of controls must be documented, tested, and maintained to ensure
their effectiveness. To comply with section 404 Apollo Shoes Inc. has to submit an annual report that
details the four following key elements;
 Statement of responsibility issued by Apollo s chief executive officer and the chief financial officer
for establishing and maintaining adequate internal control structure and procedures

Racial Profiling After September 11 Essay
Hessian Abbess says he watched in humiliation as two security officers yanked clothes out of his carry
on bag in plain view of dozens of other travelers at Baltimore/Washington International Airport.
Hessian Abbess, an Arab lawyer going to a convention, was kept at the gate for 30 minutes that
October day. He tried to show them a business card that identified him as member of the National Bar
Association, but they paid no attention. I felt threatened. I felt if I protested too much, I was going to
eat airport carpet, Hessian Abbess says.
A US Airways gate agent told him he was detained because he fit a profile designed to identify
travelers who may pose a security risk. But the agent wouldn t be more specific. Hessian Abbess

The model is expected to be an improvement over the written guidelines that airport employees use
now.
Civil rights groups met with Secretary of Transportation to discuss concerns about the profiling
system. Participants included the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the ACLU and the American Muslim
Council. One result: By Dec. 31, signs will be posted at airports telling travelers how to contact the
Department of Transportation if they have a complaint about security. The DOT says it is investigating
45 complaints about racial and ethnic concerns received this year. We are going to be working with the
airlines on the things we re hearing about, says DOT general counsel Nancy McFadden. We re going
to be vigilant about this.
Profiling is not new. American Airlines began using profiling in 1986, drawing on the expertise of
former El Al employees who developed it for the Israeli airline.
Simply put, profiling is a screening system intended to ferret out travelers who might try to hijack a
plane or smuggle a bomb aboard. It involves asking questions Did you pack your own bags and Did
anyone ask you to carry anything for them are two examples and examining a passenger s travel
habits. A ticket paid for with cash, a one way ticket bought the day of departure, or lack of a travel
history with a particular airline may be red flags that lead to extra scrutiny.
Airline and Federal Aviation Administration officials say profiling methods do not include

Consumer Spending In The United States
American s are known for spending the money they do not have. Most people in the United States are
consumers that is the reason why Walmart is so successful. In August many people spent more money
than usual as personal spending, consumer consumption, and household consumption. People tend to
spend more money when supply decreases and therefore their demand increases. Many of these
individuals do not see the real expenditures they are making. These are the reasons why in August
household spending rose: First, personal spending which includes health care amongst other things,
advanced 0.4% in August (Sparshott, 2015). Credit cards may not be an ally for an individual because
they tend to swipe the card and end up with a big bill. Next, consumer spending may be influence by
the final sales every store in the U.S. presents. At the end, one spent more than expected. Consumer
spending may be a good thing for GDP but not for the individual. Many people need counseling on
how to spend their money because on the long term it may cause a decline on the economy. ... Show

Americans do not believe that you can spend a lot of many on grocery. Many families tend to buy
more grocery than the necessary. Household consumption needs to be measure because although you
may not believe many barrels of money may be drawn through the kitchen. The increase in household
spending are just temporary factors because they can be regulated. People need to be more aware and
rational when it comes to spending money. Government should encourage people to save money for
their future. Also, educate their children on the importance of savings so they can be great
administrators of money. There are many programs in existence to regulate household spending. Let s
begin saving and ensure a better for future for

Christopher Mccandles s Applied Human Development In...
While reading Into the Wild several aspects of Christopher McCandles development and lived
experiences can be applied to the topics that were examined in Applied Child Development. In
particular, the themes of scarcity, parental involvement, distancing, and the culture of affluence are
extremely salient in discussing Christopher McCandles experiences.
Scarcity
Feinberg introduces scarcity as the concept of having an inadequate supply of a certain need that is
crucial to the development of the individual (Feingberg, 2015). For example, an individual can
experience scarcity in money, space, time, love or support, and housing which all have an effect over
time on their interactions with systems around them (APSY 418, 7/5.2017). Christopher experiences
scarcity both through his own choices and as a result of the relationship that he had with those around
him. For example, in his relationship with his father Christopher experiences a scarcity of affection
and nurturing that would have softened the impact of his father parenting style and demand for
perfection. This lack of emotional support, despite the presence of basic needs, cause Christopher to
develop a lack of attachment to his father and made it easier for him to break off from his family later
in his life. On the other hand, Christopher chooses to experience a scarcity of money, shelter, and other
basic necessities when he leaves civilization and tries to survive in the wilderness. the lack of human
interaction is

The Benefits Of New Media And Technology
What is the self in the digital age? One might say that their true online self is on Facebook, or
MySpace, or maybe Instagram. The splintering of the self into multiple versions illustrates a desire to
see what one can be online. Truly, new media and technology has allowed one to find their true inner
self, whether that reflect their real self in real life or not. Yet, not everyone sees these disparate selves
with optimism. Sherry Turkle and Natasha Schüll see the growth of new media and technology as
detrimental to the formation of our true selves and both critically analyze specific cases where it can
be harmful. I, however, disagree with the sentiment that new media and technology is something
inherently harmful. Although they can certainly be misused, the benefits of these digital innovations
can, when applied with critical understanding, outweigh the negatives brought up by Turkle and
Schüll. First, Turkle argues that social media is preventing adolescents from dedicating time to self
reflection and replacing face to face communication with online communication. Turkle states in her
book, Alone Together, that teens need time to discover themselves, time to think. But technology, put
in the service of always on communication and telegraphic speed and brevity, has changed the rules of
engagement with all of this. Here, Turkle state that since social media is easily accessible and
immediate, teenagers will be compelled to interact online, instead of taking the

Whales Evolution
Did you even know whales ever lived on land? The whales are the biggest animals. They are larger
than the largest dinosaurs. They live in the ocean like other sea creatures, but they almost look like the
land living animals more than the fishes. Furthermore, some scientists believed that around fifty
millions of years ago, the whales probably lived upon the land. There are two significant exhibits from
the two different periods why the scientists astonish about whale s living is familiar to land living
mammals, which are whale s anatomy in this current period and whale s fossil remains of the past.
Firstly, the anatomy of the whales nowadays is one of the significant testimonies to attest that the
whales lived on a land for a very long time ago. According to whale s anatomy, the whales have
placentas for giving birth and have nipples for feeding milk to their young unlike fish that lay eggs for
giving birth. They often nurse their children for two years. After that, their babies begin to eat solid
food. Moreover, they have no gills because they breathe air ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

From the fossil record, the first ancestor of whale name is Pakicetus. They had four limbs function for
walking and no tail fluke. Then they evolved because of in water eating behavior became
Ambulocetus. Ambulocetus still had four limbs, but their hind and tail were bigger and thicker for
supporting swimming functional. The millions of years passed by, Ambulocetus became Maiacetus,
which spent some time on land. However, they still had four limbs, but those were used for walking
and swimming. After Maiacetus period, they developed for several millions of years became Dorudon.
Dorudon was aquatic living totally. They reduced hind limb, became a fluke. Thus, those examples of
the whale s fossil records have supported the assumption of the whale ancestors had four limbs and

Affirmative Action Reality
The Reality of Affirmative Action Have you ever thought how our educational system works? Many
people believe that race has nothing to do with the way people view them and don t think that this
affects them in any aspect. Others believe that race is just something people overlook but in reality
that s what we have to discuss and figure out today. Under our constitution every person who is legally
able to be here has the right to be treated equal as everyone else. Why is that the way someone looks
or where their from affects the way people judge them. A system called Affirmative Actions has been
used to promote access in opportunities dealing with education, employment, housing, and
government contracts. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now this example has been proven and researched so it is based of off facts. This leads us to believe
that this impacts in a negative way. The affirmative action is a type of discrimination in a way because
not all people benefit from it, so a lot of people are being excluded. Just because someone is not
necessarily caucasian it doesn t mean that they are not equal to them. Minorities are the most targeted
in these cases and no one does anything to help them because they believe that if they do they can get
affected by what might happen. So people have allowed that things like affirmative action to occur
without really knowing what it actually does and how this affects

The Effect Of String Function On An Accidental Of A...
One does not need to use words to convey a message. Dots and lines on a page can convey emotion
just as well, if not better. Music can fill in the context where words cannot. The simple switch between
major to minor, an accidental of a natural or a flat can easily show the motion of a piece.
As a cellist for over six years, I wanted to understand the fundamental idea of why notes were audible.
I asked myself, why do I press down on certain parts of the strings on a cello to produce certain notes?
How are sound waves calculated? With these two questions in mind, I dove in with the desire to apply
a different perspective of music.
Diagram 1
One of the earliest discoveries of how string function comes from the Greek philosopher, Pythagoras.
The wavelength and pinches between strings are what differentiate the varying notes. As shown in
Diagram 1, the wavelengths have specific spacing in between, which are directly related to
mathematics. Nodes, or pinches, are strategically and mathematically placed to resonate precise
pitches, and particular ratios are able to be derived from these intervals. For example, an octave
describes two notes that are eight notes apart. In order to create the perfect first octave, the string is
pinched into perfect halves, making the mathematical ratio , as 2 parts are created from the whole with
one pinch. By pinching the string in half, the frequency becomes twice as fast , producing a higher
tone of the same note. One octave higher than an A

Comparison Of Rikers Island Jail
Three minutes. 180 seconds. Not a lot of time, is it? What can you do?
Well I can tell you what I am most likely to do in three minutes. Make Ramen noodles. Delicious,
filling, and fast ramen noodles. In all honesty, one would be hard pressed to find someone who could
resist the tantalizing scent of noodles dowsed in a scrumptious mixture of salt and more salt.
Let us begin with a brief overview of the history of ramen noodles. Created in Japan in the late 50 s by
Momofuku Ando, this easy to prepare meal was designed to be a quick and easy alternative to making
a full dinner. Mr. Ando made the iconic snack food for the true reason that fosters invention. He
created it out of necessity. In Japan there was a shortage of food after World War ... Show more

my goals. It has sustained me, college students whose levels of intoxication reach staggeringly high
levels, and even inmates of Rikers Island Jail where Ramen noodles are the most purchased product at
the commissary. Ramen noodles saved thousands of people from starvation in Japan. Ramen noodles
have brought friends closer together. Ramen noodles are incredible.
Other than being unbearably delicious, ramen noodles are simply on of the greatest innovations. Its
very own country voted it as the greatest domestic invention in its history. And Japan the invented the
Samurai sword. Samurai swords are pretty awesome.
If nothing else, Ramen noodles are the just plain efficient. In fact, for the number crunchers out there,
you can live on ramen noodles for a full year, all three meals, for a measly $140.
Perspective.
That s about 4.6 days of Boun Amici sandwiches. So the cost per unit of this satisfying meal is off the
charts.
Before I finish my piece, I must ask. Who among us has not tasted the love and affection cooked into
ramen noodles?

Malcom X And The Civil Rights Of Malcolm X
By definition, civil rights are the rights of citizens to political and social equality. To simplify that,
civil rights are rights that every person should have, no matter what race, color, ethnicity, etc. Some
people believed so strongly that everyone should have civil rights, they were willing to risk their own
lives for it. People such as Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, Elizabeth Eckford,
Ernest Green, Hazel Massery, and many others. One of the many civil rights activists was Malcolm
Little, who later changed his name to Malcolm X. Malcolm X was one of the activists who fought
back violently. All of these civil rights activists wanted generally the same thing. Dr. King wants the
same thing I want. Freedom Malcolm X. Many of them used words, and peaceful protests, many of
which were led by Martin Luther King Jr. Malcolm X strongly believed that peace would never solve
anything, so he decided to use violence to get his way.
Malcolm X was one of the many activists in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Malcolm X, born Malcolm

Before his assassination, he had received many death threats by African American Muslims, and on
February 14, a week before he got shot, his house was set ablaze, presumably by the same group of
people that shot him. Malcolm X is one of the many great leaders that participated in the long and
difficult struggle for civil rights. Even today, many of those people are remembered, and thanked,
whether they are still alive or not. The struggle that all of these people overcame was very difficult,
and everyone might not be equal without those

  • 2. Demographic Transition Theory Do we live in an overcrowded world? Discuss the demographic transition theories as well as the theories of Malthus and his critics before coming up with your own informed opinion Overcrowding seems at this point to be an inevitable and freighting consequence of urbanization and global population growth. But to answer if the world is overcrowded is highly relative to whom the question is being asked. To those knowledgeable about the demographic transition theories will note that the theories have nothing really to do with answering if the world is overcrowded. They could use the mortality and fertility rate charts to see what countries are where on the scales but there is not anywhere to label when the world is overcrowded. The theories can definitely point to trends in fertility and mortality but it would hard to be able to conclude anything about an overcrowded world. Since death and birth go hand in hand there always seems to be somewhat of a balance. If the question was asked to the then alive Thomas Malthus he would probably answer yes to the world being overcrowded. He would most likely share his theory on exponential population growth where populations grown increasingly overtime always more than the previous year. Wherein populace is growing but the supply of food and other necessities are now yielding at the same rate. He was able to notice that high volume populace change was apparent and could be debilitating to societies and the globe. Personally I believe the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Native American Culture In America What is Native American culture? Native American culture is recognized in the United States. It has over five hundred tribes and village, the Native American culture has been spread throughout the entire globe. The main religions and the main traditions of the Native Americans were based on the culture of Animism. Animism is a commonly shared doctrine or belief of the indigenous people and many other Indian Tribes that have been found in North America. There is an enormous amount of languages that the Native Americans speak. There were as many as nine hundred thousand inhabitants with over three hundred languages ( Native American Blog ). Some of the federally recognized tribes vary in population and they vary in land base. Many of the tribes all have their own culture, their own language, and their own history. Every tribe has its own unique customs. Some of the tribes even have distinct styles of housing, dressing, and eating. Native American tribes have effectively governed themselves for hundreds of years. Native Americans have even developed many different systems of nurturing and teaching their youth. Today, many tribes that are located in the United States are reviving their cultures and even their traditions. Every single tribe has its own unique rich culture. Whether the tribe is founded in language or ceremony, it strengthens America as a nation today. Although it was not always like this, there have been many obstacles in the way. At one point federal laws and policies had completely prohibited tribes from practicing any of their religions and any of their ceremonies. It was unfair, Tribes lacked control of their own ceremonial items and even their human remains until the 1990 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act required federal agencies and institutions that receive federal funding to return Native American cultural items to their descendants and tribes ( Native Americans Destroying ). That law was not completely repealed until the 1978 American Indian Religious Freedom Act. Which was then later amended to protect the Native American Church s ceremonial use. Why did Americans adopt their culture? The Native Americans had an extremely beautiful culture. The Native ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Human sleep occurs in several cycles during the night, each cycles consisting of five stages. Light sleep to very deep sleep are ranging during the first four stages, EEG machine shows that the brain activities are decreasing by demonstrating the electrical wave rhythms from first to fourth stage. The four stages can categorized as non REM sleep (or slow wave sleep). However, during the fifth stage, there are increased activity of the brain which is associated with rapid eye movement (REM). • 5. Implementation Of A Large Quality Management System Munson Healthcare includes nine owned or affiliated hospitals with more than 7,000 employees. It provides services to patients from 30 counties in Michigan spread through the northern half of the Lower Peninsula as well as the eastern half of the Upper Peninsula. As part of the organization s True North initiative, the patient is central to all processes. In this large and varied organization, implementation of a large quality management system will help ensure that we meet this goal. The International Organization for Standardization developed a series of written quality standards (Evans, 2014). The purpose was to standardize quality requirements between European countries in the common market and countries wanting to do business with them (Evans, 2014). This paper will review the ISO 9000 standards, the benefits of implementing an ISO compliant quality management system (QMS), and describe challenges to the successful implementation of such a program in a hospital system. ISO 9000 (Quality Management) ISO 9000 Standards The ISO 9000 series developed by the International Organization for Standardization includes requirements of a QMS (9001) and guidelines to make a QMS more effective and efficient (9004) (van den Heuvel, Koning, Bogers, Berg van Dijen, 2005). In 2008, the International Organization for Standardization clarified the language in the 9001 standards but it remained comparable to the 2000 version (Hunt, 2008). • 6. The Eighth Sin In Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales The Eighth Sin Of the Seven Deadly Sins, there are powerful arguments for each one being more deadly or worse than the others. However, there is an Eighth that is inherently the worst sin. Each of the Seven Sins are socially acceptable in small doses. For example, it is not a sin to be proud of something you ve made or to mad at a situation or to even simply want what someone else has. All that becomes sin, however, when it is blown out of moderation, and when you go out of your way to amplify the feelings and act on them, like becoming so proud you actively try to destroy others works or become so wanting you steal, take, or destroy others property. This Eighth Sin, though, is not like this. You cannot simply act it out in moderation, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This action can also be projected onto other people, deliberately causing them to become more depressed and losing hope. To actively make yourself and others around you lose will and heart is to kill yourself and others not only possibly physically, but spiritually. It is the eighth sin and quite possibly the worst sin because it affects not only you, but primarily those around you. Integrating despondence into Canterbury Tales would simply be another tale told by one of the pilgrims. This tale could be about a desponder whose sin catches up to him or her after his or her regular hopeless attitude and projection of it onto others causes a catastrophic event with them negative results on those around them. The moral of the tale about despond would be simply stated, though sometimes difficult to do; this moral would be to support others and do your best to instill them with confidence, to keep their spirits and their hopes up. We can learn through helping others not just physically but emotionally, we help ourselves just the same. Staying despondent creates a cycle of hopelessness and depression that may never be broken, and the cycle has no positive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Slave, By Julius Lester Everyone has a story to tell about their lives, their experiences. In class, we read the book titled To Be a Slave, by Julius Lester. It compiled the experiences of ex slaves that they had during slavery, each of their own stories, or thoughts, their first person accounts. Slavery in America started in 1619 when Africans were shipped to Jamestown for labor. From then on, a long, cruel period started for them, being enslaved and denied basic allow the human rights. However, are these experiences important or not for contemporary Americans to read about? Yes, these first person accounts are important for them to read, for they allow the voices of the long oppressed to be heard, it helps us learn from past mistakes as to not make them again, and it gives a better understanding of the events that were not even that long ago. The slaves first person accounts about their experiences with slavery are important for modern Americans to read because it allows their long oppressed voices to be heard. Slaves of the 1600 s were oppressed for an extreme amount of time put down, silenced, degraded, dehumanized. Their words did not meet the ears of whites without punishment, unless it was for the benefit of the slave owner, like when a slave betrayed other slaves about revolt plans, or even after the events of slavery when blacks were paid to lie to other blacks. Primary Brain Tumors Essay According to PubMed، brain tumors are expressed by a collection of neoplasms which are arising from different cells, both from within the brain parenchyma and from systemic tumors that have metastasized and spread to the brain. Throughout history, malignant brain tumors constitute such a small percentage of overall cancer incidence; therefore, little training has been provided for these tumors. Most these tumors are responsible for the majority of deaths from primary brain cancers. To date, primary brain tumors, whether malignant or nonmalignant, have devastating consequences (1). • 12. Why The Airline Southwest Meets Or Exceeds The National... The question addressed is if the airline Southwest meets or exceeds the national rate for on time performance at the Oklahoma City airport. The data collected from the BTS is categorized into either on time or not on time for Oklahoma City and nationwide. The BTS data was a complete collection from participating airlines, which consist of airlines with 1 percent or more of scheduled domestic passenger revenues. A Chi Squared Goodness of Fit test was selected for use. The Chi Squared Goodness of Fit test offered a method to compare categorical data such as on time performance or not on time performance. The two tailed hypothesis test is Ho: Southwest at Oklahoma City airport has the same on time performance as the national rate. Ha: Southwest at Oklahoma City airport does not have the same on time performance as the national rate. As the data was for 2015 this allowed for 12 months of data enabling a df =11 with a desired significance level of 95% α = .05, power of β = .80, and medium effect size of 0.30 resulting in a desired sample size of 187 which was exceeded as the data includes 17,786 operations. Results The BTS reported a total of 5,819,079 operations nationally with an on time rate of 79.92% and Oklahoma had 17,786 with an on time rate of 77.29%. The national on time rate was applied to the total operations by southwest as shown in Table 1 and resulted in the expected delays in the expected column. • 13. The Suez Crisis In the Suez Crisis, not all other ways of resolving the problem should have been tried first because it was a surprise attack on Egypt. The British did not try other ways of solving the crisis and did not try diplomacy with Egypt. The British took prompt action against Nasser because they feared that their power in the Middle East would be compromised because of him. (Dooley) They colluded with France and Israel so that they would all attack Egypt and forcefully recover the Suez Canal. Prime Minister Eden did not consider many options besides war because he saw a parallel between how Hitler had begun by remilitarizing the Rhineland; Nasser had expropriated the Suez Canal. (Kunz 97) Consequently, he did not want to try to appease Nasser because he feared that the Egyptians would influence the rest of the Middle East and cut off their oil supply. Although war should have been a last resort the British s immediate impulse was to hit Nasser hard and quickly (Dooley). Clearly, diplomacy was not considered because the British hoped to seize the Suez Canal by force. This is why they secretly colluded in hopes of bombarding the Egyptians and forcing them to relinquish control of the canal. Almost immediately, Britain with France started well publicized military preparations in the Mediterranean they hoped to force Egypt to agree to give the Suez Canal to the international community. • 14. The Aztec Empire Of The Nineteenth Century The Aztec Empire of the 14th and 15th centuries was one of the most successful and powerful Mesoamerican kingdoms at that time. The community of people began in the middle of a lake and eventually became the capital of an empire. The Aztecs were comprised of multi ethnic and multi lingual individuals that lived in a large area that stretched from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf coast and housed over fifteen million people (Schmal). Their ability to be successful and have a powerful dominance in their quest was centered on their religious beliefs that were innate within everyone (Meyer 54). At its height, Tenochtitlan had a multi ethnic population of more than 200,000 people, which made it one of the world s largest cities in the early 1500s (Meyer 54). The Aztec nomads had vivid visions of what they wanted and what they wanted to leave; troubling times to include intermarriages, and the local chiefs being forced to live in Mayapan as hostages (Meyer 48). There was a lot of cruelty and war within the previous living conditions and as a result these resilient people went back to their roots relying on their knowledge of cultivation, family connection and strong community life. These are the things, in my opinion, that gave them the strength to move on and to find peace in their lives. Their ability to be extraordinary in all they accomplished in the unity of the Aztec nation was very significant in their lives at the time. The city of Tenochtitlan consisted of a large number of priests and craftsmen which supported the economy that relied on extensive trade for the necessities and for luxury items (Time Life Books 49). Tenochtitlan was the epitome of an urban center. The population alone, coupled with the great markets where they sold their goods allowed the city to have the beginnings of economic class. • 16. Islam Gender Equality Islam has gradually claimed its title as the second largest religion in the world after Christianity (Severson, 2011). Muslims make up majority of the population in 49 countries (Desilver, 2017), but within those countries, approximately forty five of them are inhabited by half a billion Muslim women (Galloway, 2014). Throughout history, women have been disregarded, dehumanized, disenfranchised, and censored in society. Within Islam, it has been widely believed that Muslim women are secluded within their homes. To many, this seclusion highlights a religious culture that oppresses Muslim women. The controversy of gender inequality between Muslim men and women continues to derive from the historical inferior position of women (Galloway, 2014). Like other religions, there are several controversial aspects within the religion that contribute to growing issues of gender equality in society. In this case, Islam is perceived to be the backbone of gender inequality between Muslim men and women. It is important to put into context the social roles of women in the past, the inferior position of women, and the cultural and traditional aspects of Islam. Issues of gender equality within Islam are mainly derived from the interpretations of the Qur an and their religious practices. This study will examine the effects Islam has on the role of women and how it can promote religious empowerment towards Muslim women, and cultivate equality between the genders. The members include such sociologists as Robert Park, Ernest Burgess and Louis Wirth, whose work has contributed hugely to sociology and is recognized widely as the basis of study for urban sociology. Wirth was more interested in urbanism as a way of life rather than trying to understand the shapes of cities. He argued that urbanism cannot be simply understood by measuring population of cities. Rather, it must be understood as a form of social existence. Wirth states that cities are the initiating and controlling centre of economic, political and cultural life that has drawn the most remote communities of the world into its orbit and woven diverse areas, people and activities into a cosmos. (Wirth, 1938, p.342). Although Wirth recognised that in the density of social life in cities led to formation of neighbourhoods that had distinct characteristics, he insisted that the more these city areas became affected by the wider patterns of city life, the less community characteristics would survive. (Giddens and Sutton, 2013, p.211). It is clear to see that Wirth believed that urbanism, alienated people from one another, and weakened close bonds and families. • 20. The Pay Gap And Gender Discrimination Taylor Bruton Professor Kathy Dillion English 211 November 10, 2014 Abstract For this paper, my objective was to investigate the pay gap and gender discrimination in the workplace. Through systematic examination, this paper explores numerous factors correlating to the wage gap such as occupational choices and annual earnings. On average, women have lower income due to emphasis on familial responsibilities and desiring more accommodating work schedules than men. The wage gap primarily exists within same occupational fields. In these fields, women were often faced with the glass ceiling and unable to advance in higher positions because of their gender. Women also earned less pay since less likely to ask for promotions or higher wages. In short, gender shouldn t be a factor in measuring equal pay. Taylor Bruton Professor Kathy Dillion English 211 November 10, 2014 Mind the Wage Gap Throughout history, women have typically been undermined and denied the same equal rights as men. From the Equal Pay Act to the Paycheck Fairness Act, women have fought an uphill battle for their gender equality. Women earn less than men in almost every job occupation regardless of their race, age, ethnicity, or academic credibility. Most often, the emphasis that women place on family leading to breaks in employment and a desire for more flexible working hours negatively impacts their career trajectory, and is correlated with issue of the nationwide wage gap. ... Much of the work in sessions involves aiding individuals in solving their real life problems and teaching them to modify their distorted thinking, dysfunctional behavior, and distressing affect. Therapists plan treatment on the basis of a cognitive formulation of patients disorders and an ongoing individualized cognitive conceptualization of patients and their difficulties. A developmental framework is used to understand how life events and experiences led to the development of core beliefs, underlying assumptions, and coping strategies, particularly in patients with personality disorders. A strong therapeutic alliance is a key feature of cognitive therapy. Therapists are collaborative and function as a team with patients. They provide rationales and seek patients agreement when undertaking interventions. They make mutual decisions about how time will be spent in a session, which problems will be discussed, and which homework assignments patients believe will be helpful. • 26. Christopher Mccandles s Applied Human Development In... While reading Into the Wild several aspects of Christopher McCandles development and lived experiences can be applied to the topics that were examined in Applied Child Development. In particular, the themes of scarcity, parental involvement, distancing, and the culture of affluence are extremely salient in discussing Christopher McCandles experiences. Scarcity Feinberg introduces scarcity as the concept of having an inadequate supply of a certain need that is crucial to the development of the individual (Feingberg, 2015). For example, an individual can experience scarcity in money, space, time, love or support, and housing which all have an effect over time on their interactions with systems around them (APSY 418, 7/5.2017). Christopher experiences scarcity both through his own choices and as a result of the relationship that he had with those around him. For example, in his relationship with his father Christopher experiences a scarcity of affection and nurturing that would have softened the impact of his father parenting style and demand for perfection. This lack of emotional support, despite the presence of basic needs, cause Christopher to develop a lack of attachment to his father and made it easier for him to break off from his family later in his life. On the other hand, Christopher chooses to experience a scarcity of money, shelter, and other basic necessities when he leaves civilization and tries to survive in the wilderness. the lack of human interaction is ... The splintering of the self into multiple versions illustrates a desire to see what one can be online. Truly, new media and technology has allowed one to find their true inner self, whether that reflect their real self in real life or not. Yet, not everyone sees these disparate selves with optimism. Sherry Turkle and Natasha Schüll see the growth of new media and technology as detrimental to the formation of our true selves and both critically analyze specific cases where it can be harmful. I, however, disagree with the sentiment that new media and technology is something inherently harmful. Although they can certainly be misused, the benefits of these digital innovations can, when applied with critical understanding, outweigh the negatives brought up by Turkle and Schüll. First, Turkle argues that social media is preventing adolescents from dedicating time to self reflection and replacing face to face communication with online communication. Turkle states in her book, Alone Together, that teens need time to discover themselves, time to think. But technology, put in the service of always on communication and telegraphic speed and brevity, has changed the rules of engagement with all of this. Here, Turkle state that since social media is easily accessible and immediate, teenagers will be compelled to interact online, instead of taking the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. The Effect Of String Function On An Accidental Of A... One does not need to use words to convey a message. Dots and lines on a page can convey emotion just as well, if not better. Music can fill in the context where words cannot. The simple switch between major to minor, an accidental of a natural or a flat can easily show the motion of a piece. As a cellist for over six years, I wanted to understand the fundamental idea of why notes were audible. I asked myself, why do I press down on certain parts of the strings on a cello to produce certain notes? How are sound waves calculated? With these two questions in mind, I dove in with the desire to apply a different perspective of music. Diagram 1 One of the earliest discoveries of how string function comes from the Greek philosopher, Pythagoras. The wavelength and pinches between strings are what differentiate the varying notes. As shown in Diagram 1, the wavelengths have specific spacing in between, which are directly related to mathematics. Nodes, or pinches, are strategically and mathematically placed to resonate precise pitches, and particular ratios are able to be derived from these intervals. For example, an octave describes two notes that are eight notes apart. In order to create the perfect first octave, the string is pinched into perfect halves, making the mathematical ratio , as 2 parts are created from the whole with one pinch. By pinching the string in half, the frequency becomes twice as fast , producing a higher tone of the same note. One octave higher than an A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
