3. HOW CLERICS LIVED
THE CLERGY:
• The High Clergy was always
dominated by the episcopate,
whose earthly powers were
comparable to those of any
layman. At first, the monks, all
belonging to the Lower Clergy,
were within the sphere of
power of the bishops. Later, it
would be the abbots who
would end by delimiting their
authority on the members of
the monastic orders, being the
priests in the scope of the
episcopal diocese.
4. HOW PEASANTS LIVED
THE COMMONERS´ OR
WORKERS´ESTATE:
• Villains were called the free men
of the towns dedicated to
agriculture (also called naive
settlers) and thanks to that they
could change of place, contract
marriage or transmit their goods.
Nevertheless, they were obliged
to the military service and to pay
taxes in money or in species. In
some singular case, free peasants
come to possess large tracts that
will later enable them to become
landowners, and hence to nobles,
but they will be exceptional
situations.
