v1.0 well-being
1. Why?
How many of you are current students? (BA, MA, Part-time etc)
Graduating this year or recently graduated within last year?
How are self-employed, freelancers, or entrepreneurs?
Right. Everyone is here for a different reason, but why specifically you are here is really
irrelevant in relation to the fact that you are.
Why Reboot?
Human capital is the key to todayʼs knowledge economy and there is a surplus of educated and
skilled individuals that are not gainfully employed. We are having an interdisciplinary dialogue
aimed at aligning each others professional goals and passions and are working together on
projects that have a shared social agenda.  In the process we are cross-pollinating ideas and
transferring skills, while creating meaningful change. Itʼs time to Reboot! – investing in one
another and shaping a better world.
Donʼt talk about unemployment – highest graduate unemployment in 17 years, others claim
since the early 80s vs
Today is going to be about seeing things differently
We will all get out what we put in. Side projects, networking, idea exchange, collaboration,
venture, enterprise, business.
25,000 students will start businesses this week around the globe
We need an Upgrade
Iphones, blackberries, your blender, microwave, tv, computer, are all working, the tube if you
took that to get here operating systems, they typically run -smoothly we only really take notice
them when they stop working
The old operating system is no longer working.
Culture of Consent
We need new software to fix the bugs, allowing more [relevant] data to be managed: better and
faster.
The isolation that a post-industrial consumer driven society has fed on is gradually being
displaced by a culture of:
1) Consent 2) Collaboration 3) Care
Motivation – Why do we do what we do?
1st Drive (basic needs) = Humans are biological creatures struggling for survival
2nd Drive (external rewards) = Humans respond to rewards and punishments
3rd Drive (connectedness) = Humans want to learn, to create, and to better the world
*We need to lay the foundation and set the conditions around us to support this third drive
within us.
Autonomy
Control leads to compliance = Bad
Autonomy leads to engagement = Good
*Essential in a rapidly changing economy and critical for professional, personal, and
organisational success.
Progress
As opposed to fitting the way we live around work, we are now fitting work around the way we
live.
3rd Drive: Desire to be connected an do good – Conceptual Age
Cognitive Surplus: More time – Nearly 100 hours in a lifetime of babyboomers vs Generation Y vs 50k hours in a lifetime of work
Someone born in 1960 has stared at the television set for roughly 50,000 hours - Two way channel vs 1 way channel – active participants –
leveraging a social asset
Compression of the traditional job has been occurring for sometime as organisations everywhere have learned how to make do with smaller bits of
our time
Age expectancy is now 80 +
Collaborative Consumption - Two way channel vs 1 way channel – active participants – leveraging a social asset
bartering, lending, trading, swapping, and sharing - makes good sense –not just recession busting , but also cause it feels good.
Purpose - Whatʼs your aim? Business is social.

Thank you!
Hi everyone, I’m Harry, creative thinker and co-founder of minimoko. minimoko is the
branding and design studio that loves simplicity. Elena and I founded minimoko in
October 2009 because we wanted to introduce people to simplicity in branding,
design and in general.
And we really love simplicity in “everything”. From technology, to food and
architecture, just to name a few.
“I shall not today attempt further to define the
kinds of material I understand to be embraced
within that shorthand description “simplicity” and
perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly
doing so. But I know it when I see it.”
George Whitesides
The question we always get is “What is simplicity?”. And the truth is, there is no easy
answer. Because explaining simplicity is more complex than you would expect. George
Whitesides, at TED2010, paraphrased a quotation from Potter Stewart and made the
following statement.
“Everything should be made as simple as
possible, but not simpler.”
Albert Einstein
and other famous people have talked about the virtues of simplicity, like Albert
Einstein who said that Everything should be made as simple as possible but not
simpler. So simplicity is really about interaction and function, since things that appear
to be simple to the user can be very complex in what they contain.
As part of this talk Jonas asked me to talk to you about innovation. So what is
innovation? When we work on projects with clients or collaborators and we are trying
to understand what we are working on, I sometimes pause and do something that
most people hesitate to do. Look up the term in the dictionary or wikipedia!
“Innovation comes from the Latin innovātus
which means to renew. Innovation can therefore
be seen as the process that renews something
that exists and not, as is commonly assumed,
the introduction of something new.”
Wikipedia
So I looked up the term in wikipedia and this is the first paragraph of the entry. So to
make this a bit clearer, we see innovation as renewing and as a result producing
something new. I won’t go further into the subject of innovation as the 3 hours we
have today wouldn’t be enough to cover it.
SIMPLICITY
INNOVATION
What we will look at instead is how innovation and simplicity interact. When you want
to simplify you are sometimes in essence renewing what you have to make it easier to
use and understand. So in order to simplify you need to innovate. It doesn’t work the
other way though, since sometimes innovation can lead to increased complexity.
Starting up
I believe that just being here shows something about who we are. And that is
individuals that are interested in creating change and starting something new. For the
ones of us that have already taken the step and started up we know how difficult it can
be.
When you start up, you have all these ideas, all the different statements. And the more
you talk to people and you read the more confused you get and the more noise is
created. What we suggest as a solution is to apply simplicity on what you are doing.
How it will work is basically as a funnel, so all the ideas and noise go into the wide
end and through simplifying you will get what is essential and what is useful. Our aim
here is not to dumb down things and remove what is essential, but to remove
everything EXCEPT what is essential.
Bootstrap
And simplicity can also help you in starting up by using only what is essential and not
spending for the unnecessary. When starting up, costs can easily grow out of control
and the last thing you want to happen is not be able to work on that great idea that
came out of the funnel.
Think - Do
Another essential point when starting up, is to avoid procrastinating. The more you
think about what you want to start the more difficult it will become to actually do
something. Instead we recommend that you go out and do something. Experiment,
play, get people’s feedback and then refine your idea.
This is basically what we call prototyping in design. If we had to wait until an idea is
complete to create something we would probably never reach completion. What we do
instead is prototype. From the beginning, we create something rough that can convey
the message and the value and then start testing it out and make incremental
changes. But always keep simplicity in mind, otherwise the more you work on it, the
more features will creep in and you will end up with something that is complex and
difficult to use or understand.
“Realise deeply that the present moment is all
you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus
of your life.”
Eckhart Tolle
To close off, I want to leave you with a quote that I read some months ago and it has
made a great impact on me and whoever else has read it. Realise deeply that the
present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your life. Go
out and change something, don’t expect change to just happen!
THANK YOU!
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Thank you everyone, and now let’s split into teams and start working!

Using creativity for positive change - Jonas Lumas of Reboot

  • 1. v1.0 well-being 1. Why? How many of you are current students? (BA, MA, Part-time etc) Graduating this year or recently graduated within last year? How are self-employed, freelancers, or entrepreneurs? Right. Everyone is here for a different reason, but why specifically you are here is really irrelevant in relation to the fact that you are.
  • 2. Why Reboot? Human capital is the key to todayʼs knowledge economy and there is a surplus of educated and skilled individuals that are not gainfully employed. We are having an interdisciplinary dialogue aimed at aligning each others professional goals and passions and are working together on projects that have a shared social agenda.  In the process we are cross-pollinating ideas and transferring skills, while creating meaningful change. Itʼs time to Reboot! – investing in one another and shaping a better world. Donʼt talk about unemployment – highest graduate unemployment in 17 years, others claim since the early 80s vs
  • 3. Today is going to be about seeing things differently We will all get out what we put in. Side projects, networking, idea exchange, collaboration, venture, enterprise, business. 25,000 students will start businesses this week around the globe
  • 4. We need an Upgrade Iphones, blackberries, your blender, microwave, tv, computer, are all working, the tube if you took that to get here operating systems, they typically run -smoothly we only really take notice them when they stop working The old operating system is no longer working.
  • 5. Culture of Consent We need new software to fix the bugs, allowing more [relevant] data to be managed: better and faster. The isolation that a post-industrial consumer driven society has fed on is gradually being displaced by a culture of: 1) Consent 2) Collaboration 3) Care
  • 6. Motivation – Why do we do what we do? 1st Drive (basic needs) = Humans are biological creatures struggling for survival 2nd Drive (external rewards) = Humans respond to rewards and punishments 3rd Drive (connectedness) = Humans want to learn, to create, and to better the world *We need to lay the foundation and set the conditions around us to support this third drive within us.
  • 7. Autonomy Control leads to compliance = Bad Autonomy leads to engagement = Good *Essential in a rapidly changing economy and critical for professional, personal, and organisational success.
  • 8. Progress As opposed to fitting the way we live around work, we are now fitting work around the way we live.
  • 9. 3rd Drive: Desire to be connected an do good – Conceptual Age Cognitive Surplus: More time – Nearly 100 hours in a lifetime of babyboomers vs Generation Y vs 50k hours in a lifetime of work Someone born in 1960 has stared at the television set for roughly 50,000 hours - Two way channel vs 1 way channel – active participants – leveraging a social asset Compression of the traditional job has been occurring for sometime as organisations everywhere have learned how to make do with smaller bits of our time Age expectancy is now 80 + Collaborative Consumption - Two way channel vs 1 way channel – active participants – leveraging a social asset bartering, lending, trading, swapping, and sharing - makes good sense –not just recession busting , but also cause it feels good. Purpose - Whatʼs your aim? Business is social.

  • 12. Hi everyone, I’m Harry, creative thinker and co-founder of minimoko. minimoko is the branding and design studio that loves simplicity. Elena and I founded minimoko in October 2009 because we wanted to introduce people to simplicity in branding, design and in general.
  • 13. And we really love simplicity in “everything”. From technology, to food and architecture, just to name a few.
  • 14. “I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description “simplicity” and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it.” George Whitesides The question we always get is “What is simplicity?”. And the truth is, there is no easy answer. Because explaining simplicity is more complex than you would expect. George Whitesides, at TED2010, paraphrased a quotation from Potter Stewart and made the following statement.
  • 15. “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” Albert Einstein and other famous people have talked about the virtues of simplicity, like Albert Einstein who said that Everything should be made as simple as possible but not simpler. So simplicity is really about interaction and function, since things that appear to be simple to the user can be very complex in what they contain.
  • 16. As part of this talk Jonas asked me to talk to you about innovation. So what is innovation? When we work on projects with clients or collaborators and we are trying to understand what we are working on, I sometimes pause and do something that most people hesitate to do. Look up the term in the dictionary or wikipedia!
  • 17. “Innovation comes from the Latin innovātus which means to renew. Innovation can therefore be seen as the process that renews something that exists and not, as is commonly assumed, the introduction of something new.” Wikipedia So I looked up the term in wikipedia and this is the first paragraph of the entry. So to make this a bit clearer, we see innovation as renewing and as a result producing something new. I won’t go further into the subject of innovation as the 3 hours we have today wouldn’t be enough to cover it.
  • 18. SIMPLICITY INNOVATION What we will look at instead is how innovation and simplicity interact. When you want to simplify you are sometimes in essence renewing what you have to make it easier to use and understand. So in order to simplify you need to innovate. It doesn’t work the other way though, since sometimes innovation can lead to increased complexity.
  • 19. Starting up I believe that just being here shows something about who we are. And that is individuals that are interested in creating change and starting something new. For the ones of us that have already taken the step and started up we know how difficult it can be.
  • 20. When you start up, you have all these ideas, all the different statements. And the more you talk to people and you read the more confused you get and the more noise is created. What we suggest as a solution is to apply simplicity on what you are doing. How it will work is basically as a funnel, so all the ideas and noise go into the wide end and through simplifying you will get what is essential and what is useful. Our aim here is not to dumb down things and remove what is essential, but to remove everything EXCEPT what is essential.
  • 21. Bootstrap And simplicity can also help you in starting up by using only what is essential and not spending for the unnecessary. When starting up, costs can easily grow out of control and the last thing you want to happen is not be able to work on that great idea that came out of the funnel.
  • 22. Think - Do Another essential point when starting up, is to avoid procrastinating. The more you think about what you want to start the more difficult it will become to actually do something. Instead we recommend that you go out and do something. Experiment, play, get people’s feedback and then refine your idea.
  • 23. This is basically what we call prototyping in design. If we had to wait until an idea is complete to create something we would probably never reach completion. What we do instead is prototype. From the beginning, we create something rough that can convey the message and the value and then start testing it out and make incremental changes. But always keep simplicity in mind, otherwise the more you work on it, the more features will creep in and you will end up with something that is complex and difficult to use or understand.
  • 24. “Realise deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your life.” Eckhart Tolle To close off, I want to leave you with a quote that I read some months ago and it has made a great impact on me and whoever else has read it. Realise deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your life. Go out and change something, don’t expect change to just happen!
  • 25. THANK YOU! KEEP IT SIMPLE Thank you everyone, and now let’s split into teams and start working!
