1. WORKING IN DEVELOPMENT Making the World a Better Place
2. 1. Making the World a Better Place So you start by asking yourself how is a short talk like this going to change your lives ? Well, given that you are here means that you are already interested in International Development issues. Let’s start by saying that each of you is very significant and really important in making a difference, to make the world a better place.
3. I would like to take the analogy of any large river in the world. As it is with all the great rivers of the world, that makes many changes as it flows through the landscape, they all start as the smallest of streams. So, this is the analogy, that I am using to describe the changes and the differences to the world, that each of you have the potential to make. 2.Making the World a Better Place
4. As students there are many things that you can do with certainty; to try and make the world a better place and also to improve your own career opportunities. A starting point is doing helpful searches on the Web. But you need to look at the most helpful Websites. To assist your career goals and to make the world a better place, doing some voluntary work, whilst being a student is a really great idea. Perhaps, in a student or campus charity group, that is a branch of an international organisation. It gives you some work experience, helps you to be a team player and makes a very valuable contribution to the organisation that you have chosen to assist, also giving you job satisfaction. 3.Making the World a Better Place
5. If you have not already started making your contacts with Charities and International Development organisations, whilst being a student is a really helpful time to start making your networking contacts, as very soon as possible. One helpful method of contacting many such organisations, that are trying to make the world a better place, is to look up the Groups pages on Facebook or Twitter and to look for Charity & International Development groups that you are interested to join and to give your support towards. This is very easy to do. Joining an international charity support group, for example, an organisation such as Oxfam, that was begun right here in this city, by students of Oxford, should be an inspiration to all of you. 4.Making the World a Better Place
6. An interesting book that I have found very helpful and you may also find of assistance is Solutions for the World’s Biggest Problems, edited by Bjorn Lomborg, CUP, 2007. In this book there are outlines about Economics, Environment, Governance, Health & Population, by 27 other international contributors also. 5.Making the World a Better Place
7. The subject fields that are required by Charities and by International Organisations vary depending upon the type of work that you are interested and able to do. But it is very helpful to prepare yourself for the kinds of work, the circumstances and the demands that are very likely to be made upon you. In the next part of this presentation I am going to introduce you to some helpful Websites that should assist you in making the world a place and to progress your own careers. 6.Making the World a Better Place
