Robert Burns was a Scottish poet born in 1759 in Alloway, Scotland. He began writing poetry at age 16, composing verses to folk songs about the woods, fields, and valleys of Scotland. Though his poems published in 1786 were very successful and popular, making him well known, Burns remained poor and worked hard, destroying his health. He died in poverty at age 37 in 1796. January 25th is celebrated as Burns Day in Scotland and by his supporters worldwide in honor of the beloved poet.
