Hristo Botev was a 19th century Bulgarian revolutionary poet who fought against Ottoman rule. He organized an uprising in 1876 and led 200 men across the Danube into Bulgaria to fight the Turks. However, he was killed in battle near Vratsa just two weeks later at the young age of 28. Botev was hugely influential in sparking nationalist sentiment among Bulgarians and is commemorated annually as a hero who died fighting for Bulgaria's independence. He remains one of the most important figures in modern Bulgarian history.
