David and his men had protected Nabal's shepherds and flocks in the desert. At sheep-shearing time, David sent men to ask Nabal for gifts in return, but Nabal insulted them. David was furious and took 400 men to kill Nabal and his household. Abigail, Nabal's wife, intercepted David with gifts and a wise speech, persuading him to call off his men and not shed blood. David praised God for sending Abigail to turn him from his rash course of action.
