Editor's Notes
^ None of us is perfect. We’ve all aimed at perfection – and missed. Sometimes we don’t only miss the bull’s eye – we miss the target altogether.^ But as Christians, we are pardoned, forgiven.God in his grace has covered our sins through Jesus’ blood – that’s propitiaton.^ ἱλασμός ( UBS ) "atoning sacrifice, the means of forgiveness; traditionally propitiation“Even though imperfect, God regards us as perfect.
Familiar with AAA (Not AA!)1 John’s AAA club. None of us is perfect, we all have sinned. But God has dealt with our sins once and for all.^ First A is Awareness of Fault. We’d like to be perfect, but none of us is. The first thing we have to do is admit we are not perfect.
Sin has brought separation between us and God. Removed from the source of life. If removed from God, only way to go is death. Our best efforts aren’t good enough for us to jump over to God’s side. Will fall short & plunge into the abyss. ^ John’s word – the most common in the NT (173 x) is ἁμαρτία ( UBS ) "sin, – failure to maintain an expected standard – falling short. On our side is curse of death; on his side is promise of life. How to span the gulf?First thing we have to acknowledge is that we’re on the wrong side. Not the side of perfect righteousness, as Jesus was, but on side of sin.
Bible says we have sinned. If we claim we have not sinned, we call God a liar.Look at what Paul said:
If I say I have no sin, I’ve made God out to be a liar.God, you’re right about everyone else, but not about me. Everyone else are sinners, but not me!Young preacher arrogant “I’ve never sinned in my life.” (Sins of Pride and Lying.) That claim was arrogant – called God a liar.God’s assessment of human condition is in Romans 3:23.None of us has arrived. None of us is perfect. We are all flawed.
We are all flawed. Are you looking for the perfect church with perfect people? If you find it, let me know, but I won’t join it, because then it won’t be perfect any more.All-inclusive club of humanity is that we are all flawed.
We have to be aware of our flaws. That should make me more gracious toward other people who are flawed.^ Then we need to admit to our failures. “I messed up, but I’m not going to tell anybody.” Especially true of preachers and elders. People have impression that we never mistake or sin (others think that is all we do), so never acknowledge humanity. If you leave impression you never sin, that’s arrogance.Retreat. Elders and preachers acknowledged their failures during spiritual high. Each elder & deacon acknowledged failures, supported each other, prayed. Preacher admitted his – and they fired him on the spot. Expectation that these people can never be flawed.
Conditional statement “If … then”. If I confess my failure, then God is faithful to forgive them.^ ὁμολογέω ( UBS ) "to confess, Literally “to say the same thing” God says I’m a sinner. When I say “I’ve sinned,” I’m saying the same thing about myself as God says about me.Confess is present tense: As long as I’m confessing, God is faithful to forgive my sins and purify me (both aorists). If I stop, then he stops.Read statement “My heart’s one desire…”
Model prayer. We need to forgive others, but we also need to acknowledge that we need forgiven, too.Throws out temptation of arrogance. “Why can’t you get your act together. I’m always having to forgive you.”
NIV says Pharisee prayed about himself. Greek literally says he prayed πρός – “to” himself (his god). Something like “I’m so glad that I’m so good!”^ Tax collector prayed to God.“Mercy” here is verb form of “propitiation”^ ἱλάσκομαι ( UBS ) "(mid.) to make atonement for, with a focus on the means for accomplishing forgiveness, resulting in reconciliation; (pass.) to have mercy on, be merciful to“Jesus covers my sin by his blood.
Final and most important part of AAA club. One of the hardest things for sinners to believe is that God will forgive us.Video by Max Lucado.
God has given us the medicine we need.Easy to swallow & free. Would you like to have a medicine that one dose would cure all your ills? That’s God’s grace.^ Heb 8:12 – Once-for-all cure. Wouldn’t it be great if you could get one pill and be cured for life? Jesus has given us a once-for-all cure.
Forgiven all – not just the ones we know of, but also the sins of ignorance & omission.Another conditional statement. Protasis: If we are walking in the light. Present tense. Continuing action.Apodosis: Then we have fellowship and the blood of Jesus cleanses us. (Also present tense & continuing action.) The fellowship and the cleansing take place as long as we are walking in the light. If we stop walking in the light, then the fellowship and the cleansing stop.
Another conditional statement. Protasis: If we confess our sins. Present tense. Continuing action.Apodosis: Then, he will forgive our sins and purify us from unrighteousness. The forgiveness and purification take place as long as we are habitually confessing our sins. If we stop confessing our sins, the forgiveness and purification stop. This is no doctrine of “once saved always saved”.
“Will not sin” is the goal. “But if anyone does sin.^ “One who speaks in our defense” is a παράκλητος ( UBS ) "helper, advocate“ – Defense attorney
^ ἱλασμός ( UBS ) "atoning sacrifice, the means of forgiveness; traditionally propitiation“
