- #26 Jacob had twelve sons and Israel had twelve tribal land divisions, but they were not identical. Israel actually had thirteen tribes!Jacob adopted Joseph’s two sons in the place of their father. Instead of a tribe of Joseph, there were two tribes: Ephraim and Manasseh.Genesis 48:5 “Now, as for your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, they will be mine. Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine just as Reuben and Simeon are.But when Israel arrived in the Promised Land, they only awarded twelve tribal land divisions. The Levites did not get a tribal land division, but they got towns and lands distributed within the other tribal land divisions.Numbers 35:2 “Instruct the Israelites to give the Levites towns to live in from the inheritance the Israelites will possess. You must also give the Levites grazing land around the towns.
- #27 Jesus had twelve apostles.But Judas was a traitor and was replaced by Matthias.Acts 1:26 Then they cast lots for them, and the one chosen was Matthias; so he was counted with the eleven apostles.Then God added Paul to make thirteen.Galatians 1:1 From Paul, an apostle (not from men, nor by human agency, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised him from the dead).Yet, we always speak of the twelve apostles and the twelve tribes.
- #28 How does John get 144,000 if there were actually thirteen tribes?John gets to that number by leaving out Dan (and he calls Ephraim Joseph).The point is not that no one is redeemed from Dan, but that all of God’s people are accounted for!The number is not intended to be literal.Don’t judge the Biblical writers for making numbers come out the way they wanted them to.To apocalyptic writers, numbers were symbols. They were not interested in scientific accuracy, but in the concepts represented by their symbolic use of numbers.
- #29 Here is another example from Jesus’ genealogy, as recorded by Matthew.Matthew 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to Christ, fourteen generations.
- #30 Matthew says there are three groups of fourteen generations, but the numbers don’t add up!^ In the first group, you have to count both Abraham and David to get fourteen generations. In other words, you count the first and last names inclusively.^ The second group actually has fifteen names, so you have to exclude David to reach fourteen. But that’s okay, since you included him in the first list.^ However, in the third group, you must include both Jeconiah and Jesus in order to reach fourteen. So, the third group must be counted inclusively, like the first group, but the second group must be counted differently than the first and third groups, in order to reach the threefold repetition of “fourteen generations”.
- #31 There are other problems with the accuracy of Matthew’s genealogy.^ Matthew omits Ahaziah, Joash and Amaziah.Matthew 1:8 … Joram the father of Uzziah …The complete royal line at this point was: Joram, Ahaziah, Joash, Amaziah, then Uzziah.^ Matthew dropped Jehoiakim from the genealogy.Matthew 1:11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. The complete royal line at this point was: Josiah, then Jehoiakim, who was replaced by Jehoiachin (aka Jeconiah).^ Matthew says Zerubbabel was Shealtiel’s son, when he was really his nephewMatthew 1:12 … Shealtiel the father of ZerubbabelZerubbabel was the son of Shealtiel’s brother, Pedaiah1 Chronicles 3:19 The sons of Pedaiah: Zerubbabel and Shimei.Why would Matthew make these changes and deletions?To ancient writers numbers were not a matter of scientific accuracy; they represented important concepts.
- #32 In Matthew 1, the key is the name of David.Ancient alphabets were not like our modern alphabetsHebrew and Greek alphabets consisted of characters that served a dual purpose as letters and numerals.Thus “a” could be used as the numeral “1”, “b” could be used as the numeral “2”, etc.Ancient writers would sometimes encode words using a practice called “gematria” (Greek isopsephia).They took a name, assigned the proper numerical values to each letter, then added the values. The sum was the “number” of the name.The sum represented the name. By using the number instead of the name, initiates would know of whom they were speaking, while others would not.
- #33 This is important to understanding the number “666” in Revelation 13:18.Revelation 13:18 This calls for wisdom: Let the one who has insight calculate the beast's number, for it is man's number, and his number is 666.
- #34 Archaeologists have discovered examples of gematria from the First Century.^ Graffiti in Pompeii: “I love her whose number is 545.” Only the couple would know about whom he was writing.^ A Roman inscription describes a man named Gaius as both holy and good.Gaios = 3 + 1 + 10 + 70 + 200 = 284.(Ha)gios = 1 + 3 + 10 + 70 + 200 = 284.Aga(th)os=1 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 70 + 200 = 284.The words are gematrically interchangeable.
- #35 The name “David” consisted of three letters – equivalent to our “DVD”“D” was the fourth letter of the Hebrew alphabet and “V” was the sixth letter. Ancient Hebrew had no vowels.^ D+V+D = 4+6+4 = 14.^ Matthew lists fourteen names from Abraham to David, fourteen Davidic kings, and fourteen generations from the Davidic dynasty to the Son of David!Revelation follows an accepted practice using numbers as symbols to represent concepts.
- #36 The radiant woman in Revelation 12 wears a crown of twelve stars.Revelation 12:1 Then a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and with the moon under her feet, and on her head was a crown of twelve stars.We saw this woman earlier as an idealized picture of Mary.The twelve stars represent God’s people – her crowning glory.
- #37 “Twelve” dominates the description of the holy city.Revelation 21:10-17 So he took me away in the Spirit to a huge, majestic mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God. 11 The city possesses the glory of God; its brilliance is like a precious jewel, like a stone of crystal-clear jasper. 12 It has a massive, high wall with twelve gates, with twelve angels at the gates, and the names of the twelve tribes of the nation of Israel are written on the gates. 13 There are three gates on the east side, three gates on the north side, three gates on the south side and three gates on the west side. 14 The wall of the city has twelve foundations, and on them are the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 The angel who spoke to me had a golden measuring rod with which to measure the city and its foundation stones and wall. 16 Now the city is laid out as a square, its length and width the same. He measured the city with the measuring rod at fourteen hundred miles (its length and width and height are equal). 17 He also measured its wall, one hundred forty-four cubits according to human measurement, which is also the angel's.It is a cube 12,000 stadia on each side, with 12 gates, having walls 144 cubits thick. The city has plenty of access (gates), room (dimensions), security (angels at the gates), and protection (walls).The New American Standard Bible & NET Bible miss the point entirely, here, but curiously, they keep the thickness of the wall in cubits, rather than converting it to 216 feet (@ 18”/cubit)!NET calculates the dimensions literally and gives the length of the sides as 1,400 miles. That would yield a volume 64% as large as the moon! The dimensions are not literal; they describe a city sufficient to house, provide for and protect all of God’s peopleIt follows the use of the number “twelve” in the rest of the Book of Revelation.
- #39 “Six” stands in opposition to “twelve”. It depicts man’s attempt to dispense with God.“Twelve” is God’s faithful people protected by him.“Six” is man in rebellion against God.Like Satan’s attempts to stop God (“three-and-one-half”), man’s rebellion against God always fails!
- #40 The most infamous use of “six” is the number of the beast in Revelation 13:18.Revelation 13:18 This calls for wisdom: Let the one who has insight calculate the beast’s number, for it is man’s number, and his number is 666.This is rebellion compounded. It is man’s attempt to usurp God’s throne.
- #41 666 is a gematrical number.The number concealed a name. The original readers knew the name, but history quickly forgot it.As early as the Second Century, Irenaeus (2nd Century) puzzled over the number, but he could not state with any certainty the original name behind the number.
- #42 There are some possible names that make sense in light of the historical setting of the Book of Revelation.^ Lateinos = “Latin” = 30+1+300+5+10+50+70+200 = 666.This would refer to Rome, either the city or the empire.^ Teitan = “Titus” = 300+5+10+300+1+50 = 666.This was the common name of the Flavian Emperors, Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian. Many people believe that the immediate focus of the Book of Revelation was persecution of Christians under Domitian.^ Kaisarsebaston = “Caesar Augustus” (“worshipful Caesar”). = 20+1+10+200+1+100+200+5+2+1+6+70+50 = 666.This was the imperial name that was common to all the Roman emperors.Note: this requires using the obsolete letter stigma (= 6) in the place of the letters sigma (= 200) and tau (= 300). I do not regard that as a particular problem, since the book was intended to be read aloud, and the hearers would be accustomed to associating the “st” sound with the value of 6.
- #43 As an interesting side note, eight represents resurrection and contrasts with six in other early writings.Early writers said Christians met on “the eighth day of the week, which is also the first”, because of Jesus’ resurrection.The Sybilline Oracles (Second Century) made a point of the fact that the number of the name “Jesus” (Ἰησοῦς) is 888.The one who is 666 can never measure up to the one who is 888!
- #45 Revelation 8:7-12 The first angel blew his trumpet, and there was hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was thrown at the earth so that a third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up. 8 Then the second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a great mountain of burning fire was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea became blood, 9 and a third of the creatures living in the sea died, and a third of the ships were completely destroyed. 10 Then the third angel blew his trumpet, and a huge star burning like a torch fell from the sky; it landed on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 (Now the name of the star is Wormwood.) So a third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from these waters because they were poisoned. 12 Then the fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. And there was no light for a third of the day and for a third of the night likewise.

They have power to turn the waters to blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague whenever they want. 7 When they have completed their testimony, the beast that comes up from the abyss will make war on them and conquer them and kill them. 8 Their corpses will lie in the street of the great city that is symbolically called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was also crucified. 9 For three and a half days those from every people, tribe, nation, and language will look at their corpses, because they will not permit them to be placed in a tomb. 10 And those who live on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate, even sending gifts to each other, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth. 11 But after three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and tremendous fear seized those who were watching them.

But the glory of the Lord appeared to all the Israelites at the tent of meeting. 11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me, and how long will they not believe in me, in spite of the signs that I have done among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence, and I will disinherit them; I will make you into a nation that is greater and mightier than they!” 13 Moses said to the Lord, “…19 Please forgive the iniquity of this people according to your great loyal love, just as you have forgiven this people from Egypt even until now.” 20 Then the Lord said, “I have forgiven them as you asked. 21 But truly, as I live, all the earth will be filled with the glory of the Lord. 22 For all the people have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have tempted me now these ten times, and have not obeyed me, 23 they will by no means see the land that I swore to their fathers, nor will any of them who despised me see it. 24 Only my servant Caleb, because he had a different spirit and has followed me fully- I will bring him into the land where he had gone, and his descendants will possess it.

They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were finished.) This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is the one who takes part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years. The devil’s power is limited – he only has ten horns; but God’s dominion over him is unlimited – it lasts a thousand years!
