Janata Party cadres in
Uttar Pradesh are now
a weary lot. They have
been working back-to-
back for elections since
the past one decade and
the rewards are appar-
ently not coming their
way
.
“We began working
in 2013 for the Lok Sab-
ha elections in 2014 and
then plunged into prep-
arations for the 2017 as-
sembly elections. With-
out waiting for any
break, we started pre-
paring for the 2019 Lok
Sabha elections. The
lockdown gave us a
small break but the par-
ty started virtual inter-
actions and we were
kept busy
.
Then came the legis-
lative council polls and
then the panchayat
polls and the 2022 as-
sembly elections. Now
we are busy with the
Lok Sabha by-polls and
the upcoming legisla-
tive council and RS
polls next month,” said
a party worker. What is
making the party work-
ers restive is that they
have not been given
suitable rewards by the
party leaders. “When
elections come, it is the
turncoats and outsiders
who walk away with
tickets and the commit-
ted worker is left twid-
dling his thumbs and
waiting to begin work
again,” said another
party worker from
Jaunpur who has been
denied a ticket twice.
BJP workers also
complain that the new
entrants into the party
when they become min-
isters - do not pay any
attention to the cadres.
‘‘Many of them do
not even recognise us,
leave alone interact
with us. We are not even
given the privilege of
getting any work done
in our own government
while these turncoats
and allies walk away
with all the goodies,”
said another party
worker from Agra. The
party workers want
that they should also
have a say in the govt
because it is their toil
that has brought the
party to power.

Lucknow: CM Yogi Ad-
ityanath said on Sun-
day that the proper and
honest implementation
of the central and state
government’s schemes
brought changes in the
lives of the people of
the state and it was this
that enabled the return
of the BJP in power.
Addressing the BJP
executive meet, Yogi
said, “Before 2014 in UP,
the streets of villages
were not walkable.
There used to be piles
of garbage. After ‘Swa-
chh Bharat’, today vil-
lages are now clean.
Now you can walk in
villages, there is no
problem. On one hand,
it changed the image of
the village and on the
other hand, it protected
women’s dignity
.
It also saved children
from encephalitis.” Re-
calling Central govern-
ment schemes, CM Yogi
said that through the
Central and state govt
schemes, the people of
UP sensed the working
of the double engine.
“And the result of this
was that the people of
UP rejected all the mis-
information by the op-
position and voted to
bring BJP back to UP,”
he said.
Yogi said that for the
first time the BJP has a
majority in the state
legislative assembly
and the council.
He also announced
that the new govern-
ment is committed to
fulfilling the resolu-
tions that they had
promised before the
polls and for that bud-
getary allocations were
already made. He said,
“The Swachh Bharat
Abhiyan gave the child
the right to life. And all
of this became possible
because of the Prime
Minister’s vision.
There used to be 1,500
to 2,000 deaths due to
encephalitis in the past
and now we have re-
duced deaths by 95 per
cent in our five years
after the honest imple-
mentation of Swachh
Bharat in UP.”

any party on this seat.
By-elections for the
Rampur and Azamgarh
seats will be held on
June 23. The polls have
been necessitated after
resignations of Azam
Khan and SP President
Akhilesh Yadav, who
won the assembly polls.
In a statement issued af-
ter a two-day party re-
view meeting here, the
BSP said, “The party
will not contest the Lok
Sabha by-elections
scheduled on June 23
from the Rampur seat as
we have to work on this
seat to make it strong.
The party will also not
support anyone on this
seat. Party has already
decided to contest from
Azamgarh seat”.
The party asserted
that it was “capable” of
shaking the roots of the
“anti-poor” and
“pro-capitalists” BJP in
the state. At the meet-
ing, Mayawati said the
BSP is a party with lim-
ited resources and it is
fighting parties which
are run with the sup-
port of capitalists so
“we have to make the
party strong by holding
small cadre-based meet-
ings.” “We did not get
expected results in the
polls even after hard
work,” she said, adding
a “new political devel-
opment will give a new
lease of life to the party
and attempts are on”.
“After uprooting the
Congress, the BSP is the
only party that can do
the same for the BJP,”
she added.
An atmosphere of
atrocities on poor and
anarchy is seen in the
BJP rule, she charged.
“Poor and unem-
ployed are targeted in
the name of anti-en-
croachment drives and
they are made targets
with terror of bulldozer.
The right use of bulldoz-
er is for making roads
but it is being used for
destruction,” she said.
Lucknow(PTI): In
some bad news for
people who are fond
of Lucknowi Dusseh-
ri and other varieties
of mangoes, the pro-
duction of the king of
the fruits has been hit
by around 70 per cent
in the mango belt of
Uttar Pradesh due to
adverse weather con-
ditions this year, ac-
cording to growers.
The prices of the
pulpy fruit are also
expected to soar this
summer season due to
low production, they
said.
“The production of
mangoes in Uttar
Pradesh ranged from
35 to 45 lakh metric
tonnes every year, but
this time production
of 10-12 lakh metric
tonnes is expected.
Therefore, mango will
be sold in the market
at a very high price
and people fond of
mango will have to
spend more money,”
Mango Growers Asso-
ciation of India Presi-
dent Insram Ali said.
Unusually high
temperature during
the flowering season
in February and
March this year has
hit the mango crop,
Ali said. A maximum
temperature of 30 to
35 degrees Celsius is
required during the
flowering season but
this year the tempera-
ture soared to 40 de-
grees Celsius in
March itself, damag-
ing the mango flow-
ers, he added.
Malihabad of Luc-
know is the major cen-
tre of mango produc-
tion and its Dussehri
mango is famous all
over the world for its
flavour.
Mohammad Na-
seem, a mango grower
from Malihabad, said
that he has never seen
such a bad mango
crop in his entire life.
“Thousands of mango
growers of UP have
suffered a setback due
to the destruction of
the mango crop,” he
said.
According to meteo-
rologists, the month
of March was the hot-

UNICORNS PROOF
OF FRIENDLY
ECO-SYSTEM IN
THE COUNTRY
ndia’s 15 percent
poor survive on an
income of Rs 5000 or
less a month while 1
percent rich Indians
hold 22 percent of national in-
come. In that context Prime
Minister Narendra Modi refer-
ring to the number of unicorns
surging to 100 and their valua-
tion being more than 25 lakh
crore may have sounded ironic.
The income disparity does look
stark but the fact that the coun-
try has income and employ-
ment generating unicorns in
diverse fields should instill
confidence for the country’s
future.
In his Mann ki Baat on Sun-
day, the prime minister ex-
pressed happiness over the rise
in the number of unicorns.
“Even during the pandemic In-
dia’s startups continued to cre-
ate wealth and value,” Modi
said. He also pointed out that
the average annual growth rate
of Indian unicorns is more
than those of some of the big
countries. They reflect the spir-
it of new India.
Unicorns will set the best ex-
ample if they pull the poor out
of poverty.

n an important di-
rection the Su-
preme Court up-
held the right of
women to offer
voluntary sex as legal. The
courtsaid,“Itneednotbegain-
said that notwithstanding the
profession, every individual in
this country has a right to a
dignified life under Article 21
of the Constitution of India”.
The directive was based on
some recommendations of a
Supreme Court-appointed
committee. The recommenda-
tion said that sex workers
should not be arrested or pe-
nalised or harassed or victim-
ised during a raid on any
brothel “since voluntary sex
work is not illegal and only
running a brothel is unlaw-
ful”. Centre, however, has
some reservations about the
recommendation.
Ideally, sex is one thing
which money should not be al-
lowedtobuy
.Butinthecontext
of world’s oldest profession it
is no more than a utopian
thought. Since Centre is mull-
inganewlegislationonsubject
it should consider legalizing
prostitution as is the case in 15
countries including the Neth-
erlands, UK, Germany, Brazil,
France, Denmark, Australia,
Indonesia,Greece,Canadaand
Colombia among others. But it
should not be without some re-
strictions.
Theauthoritiesmustbearin
mind the failure of Immoral
Traffic (Prevention) Act while
formulating the law on prosti-
tution. Voluntary sex which
the SC has legalised still leaves
women vulnerable to exploita-
tion by pimps and brothels.
Still, it is a laudable order
which will be ineffective with-
out sensitisation of police who

.Itis
for state govts to take responsi-
bility of sensitising the cops.
LAUDABLE ORDER
ON SEX WORKERS
Since the Centre is mulling
a new legislation on the
subject it should consider
legalizing prostitution as is
the case in 15 countries
including the Netherlands,

Denmark, Australia,
Indonesia, Greece, Canada
and Colombia among others.

competence,andcapabilityof
the governance professionals
of this country
. Research on
thissubjectshowsarecurrent
pattern - it happens every two
decades. A hundred and one
years ago, KPS Menon topped
the ICS exam. Many in the
ICS and the Secretary of
state’s office felt that this was
the beginning of the end of
the ICS! How could an Indian
be better than the best of Ox-
bridge graduates?
Two decades later, the civil
services exams had to be dis-
continued because of World
War II. Again, the naysayers
said that this was the begin-
ningof theend,astherewould
be no further recruitment.
This was not all. After the
British decided to leave India,
the Secretary of state decided
to dismember ICS in August/
Septemberof 1946. SardarPa-
tel stepped in and called for a
meeting with the Premiers of
the eleven provinces (as the
states were then called) Not
only were the ICS and IP offic-
ers asked to continue, but the
Conference of Premiers also
decided on the constitution of
the IAS and the IPS and the
joint recruitment and train-
ing of all superior services.
By the mid-sixties, most
states had separated the judi-
cial and executive functions
of theDMs.It led to a seriesof
articles in newspapers and
journals saying that this
would affect the prestige and
power of the bureaucracy
.
Well,bythistime,theprimary
focus of the state had shifted
to Atma Nirbharta in food.
While the agriculture depart-
ment provided the seeds – the
ecosystem of credit, market
infrastructure and procure-
ment were done by the civil
services.
In 1984, David Potter wrote
the book India’s Political Ad-
ministrators and said that
civil services would be chal-
lenged by elected Panchayats
and municipal corporations.
In his concluding remarks, he
went ahead and announced
(much like Fukuyama’s The
end of History) that it would
take not more than two dec-
ades for the services to be
wound up. The 73rd /74th
amendment were enacted in
1994, but it was welcomed by
members of the civil service.
In fact, the LBSNAA and
NIRD were closely engaged in
the national consultations on
this subject.
In 2000, the late lamented
StephenCohen,authorof sev-
eral books on India and Paki-
stan, and my mentor at the

ington DC asked me if a liter-
ate India would be more diffi-

growth, but also by strict en-
forcementof theRighttoFood

by themselves these are the

grammes in the world – and
who is behind the successful

There is of course the fun-

Having established the
twenty-year pattern of surge
and settlement of criticism,
let me say that twenty years
from now, a similar commen-
tary would appear on the edi-

The problem with many crit-
ics of the civil services is that
they have fewer opportunities
to interact with the next gen-

equally good, if not better.

Chandigarh: It is hap-
pening for the first
time that Brahmin
leaders of Bharatiya
Janata Party are open-
ly raising the issue of
neglect of their com-
munity in the party.
Haryana’s Rohtak seat
MP Arvind Sharma,
while targeting his own
party, said that at one
time there used to be 10
Brahmin chief minis-
ters in the country but
now their numbers are
limited. Referring to
the first Chief Minister
of Haryana, Pandit
Bhagwat Dayal Shar-
ma, he said that when
will a Brahmin become
the Chief Minister in
Haryana. Similarly, in
Maharashtra, former
BJP president Raosa-
heb Danve said that he
does not want Brahmin
leaders to become only
municipal councilors
or municipal corpora-
tion presidents, they
should get a better posi-
tions. Interestingly, it is
for the first time, that
such talk has arisen in-
side the party.
However, the leaders
who raise their voices
are not of very high
stature or are not di-
rectly blaming their
party
. But what they are
pointing towards is be-
ing mentioned by oth-
er party leaders as
well. Keep in mind that
at this time BJP is rul-
ing in most of the
states of the country,
however merely in As-
sam does the commu-
nity have its chief min-
isterial representative.
Earlier, the only Brah-
min Chief Minister was
Devendra Fadnavis.
It is not that BJP is
doing politics of back-
ward castes and hence
it is ignoring the upper
castes. BJP has been
making chief ministers
of the upper castes but
leaving Brahmins be-
hind. Even the chief
minister of the minori-
ty Jain community was
retained in Gujarat,
who was removed last
year. In Uttar Pradesh,
Uttarakhand and
Himachal Pradesh, BJP
has made Thakur the
chief minister, while
Tripura had a Kayastha
chief minister, who has
been removed this
month and a member of
the Vaish community
has been made the
Chief Minister. Keep in
mind that despite all
the displeasure ex-
pressed in the Uttar
Pradesh elections,
Brahmins had voted for
the BJP and almost all
over the country Brah-
min voters vote for the
BJP in bulk. It is also to
be noted that Brahmins
are the largest populous
caste in the country

MLAs in the assembly
is more than one hun-
dred, hence ‘red caps’
are visible across the
assembly seats.
Earlier BJP leaders
used to wear saffron
gamcha but now they
too have started wear-
ing saffron cap. Keep
in mind that Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi wore a saffron
cap several times in
the past.
He also did a road
show in Gujarat wear-
ing a saffron cap. That
is why the leaders of
BJP have started
wearing saffron caps
in place of or along
with saffron. So, the
whole house is look-
ing replete with red
and saffron caps. But
it is not that only
these two colors are
visible in the house.
Yellow color has
been added to it by
Suheldev Bharatiya
SamajParty
.Thistime
the MLAs who won
from Omprakash Ra-
jbhar’s party are com-
ing to the house wear-
ing a yellow cap and
wearing a yellow gam-
chha. Last time, the
RashtriyaLokDalhad
onlyoneMLA,butthis
time its number of
MLAs has increased
to eight and following
the tend, these eight
legislators are coming
to the house wearing
green caps.
The BSP now has
only one MLA, who
is coming to the
house wearing a blue
cap and a blue color
gamchha. Therefore,
the UP asembly ap-
pears to be a an
arists rendition of
the Holi festival.

Tension in Karnataka as
Dalits denied temple entry
Bengaluru (Agen-
cies): Tension pre-
vailed in Karnata-
ka’s Yadgir district
on Sunday in connec-
tion with a dispute
that arose over deny-
ing entry to Dalits in
a Hanuman Temple,
the police said.
The police have
clamped prohibitory
orders in Amalihala
and Huvinahalli vil-
lages of Hunasagi
taluk in Yadgir dis-
trict, a police officer
said, adding the situ-
ation has been tense
since the last four
days. The issue has
resulted in a face-off
between the Dalits
and people belonging
to the upper caste in
the two villages.
According to the
police, Dalits of
Hoovinahalli village
were denied entry to
Hanuman temple lo-
cated in Amalihala
village four days ago.
The situation fur-
ther seemed to be

The denial of en-
try to Dalits was
condemned by Dalit

New Delhi: Congress
president Sonia Gandhi
has constituted three
important committees
to implement the reso-
lutions of Nav Sankalp
Shivir. One is the Politi-
cal Affairs Committee
of the Congress. The
other is the task force
set up for the prepara-
tions for the 2024 Lok
Sabha elections and one
is the committee to co-
ordinate the Bharat
Jodo Yatra. In this, the
election preparation
committee is headed by
P Chidambaram and in-
terestingly enough, it
seems that all the con-
tenders for the Rajya
Sabha seat of the Con-
gress have been placed
in this committee. Com-
mittee chairman P Chi-
dambaram’s term of
Rajya Sabha is also
coming to an end and he
is also a contender.
Chidambaram is cur-
rently a Rajya Sabha
MP from Maharashtra.
This time it is not yet
decided whether he will
go to the Upper House
from Maharashtra it-
self or he will be sent
from his home state Ta-
mil Nadu. Keep in mind
that this time DMK has
left one seat for the Con-
gress. Meanwhile, an-
other name in Chidam-
baram’s committee is
that of Mukul Wasnik
who has been the gen-
eral secretary of the
party for the last 20
years. According to the
rule of leaving office af-
ter five consecutive
years, he has to leave
the post of General Sec-
retary
. He has been hop-
ing to go to the Rajya
Sabha for a long time
and this time it is pos-
sible that he will get a
chance from his home
state Maharashtra.
The third name in
Chidambaram’s com-
mittee is that of Jairam
Ramesh. He is a Rajya
Sabha MP from Karna-
taka and his term is
also coming to an end
and he is once again
hoping to be sent to the
Upper House from Kar-
nataka itself. Like Chid-
ambaram, Ramesh’s
going to the Rajya Sab-
ha is considered almost
certain. In the commit-
tee, the fourth name is
of KC Venugopal, who
is already in the Rajya
Sabha. The fifth name
is of Ajay Maken whi is
the general secretary of
the party and is in
charge of Rajasthan.
This time he is also hop-
ing to get a Rajya Sabha
nomination. However,
there are already two
external leaders as MPs
from Rajasthan in the
form of Manmohan
Singh and KC Venugo-
pal.
Priyanka Gandhi
Vadra is the sixth name
in the task force. She
herself does not know
whether she wants a Ra-
jya Sabha seat or not,
but many party leaders
and her close people
want to send her to Ra-
jya Sabha from Chhat-
tisgarh. Chhattisgarh
Chief Minister Bhu-
pesh Baghel also wants
the same. The seventh
name in this committee
is that of Randeep Sur-
jewala, who is somehow
doing all he can to go to
the Upper House. Con-
gress will get one seat
in his home state Hary-
ana, but everyone
knows that Bhupinder
Singh Hooda’s camp
will not allow him to
win if the party sends
Surjewala to Haryana.
That’s why he is trying
for Rajya Sabha mem-
bership from some oth-
er state.
All of Congress’ RS aspirants are in one ‘Nav Sankalp’ committee!

‘India heading towards another
power crisis in July-August’
New Delhi (PTI): A
lower pre-monsoon
coal stock at thermal
power plants in India is

research organisation
CREA has said.
Thecurrentcoalstock
stands at 13.5 million
tonnes at pithead power
stations and 20.7 MT cu-
mulatively at all power

.
“The data compiled
from official sources
suggest that the coal
power plants are in no
position to address even
a minor spike in the
power demand and
there is a need to plan
for coal transportation
well in advance,” CREA

sis is a coal manage-
ment crisis’.
The Central Electric-
ity Authority of India
(CEA) has predicted a
peak power demand of
214 GW in August. In ad-
dition, the average en-
ergy demand could also
increase to more than
what it is in the month
of May to 1,33,426 mil-
lion units (MUs).
It also said the recent
power crisis in the coun-
try was not due to coal
productionbut“distribu-
tion and official apathy”.
India saw a record
coalproductionof 777.26
million tonnes (MT) in
the financial year 2021-
22 against 716.08 MT in

GOVT WITHDRAWS UIDAI ADVISORY
New Delhi: The government has withdrawn an UIDAI
advisory that cautioned the general public against
sharing photocopy of their Aadhaar with any organi-

it is withdrawing the press release as it can lead to
misinterpretation. “The release advised the people to
not to share photocopy of their Aadhaar with any or-
ganisation because it can be misused. Alternatively, a
masked Aadhaar which displays only the last 4 digits
of Aadhaar number, can be used,” the statement said.

Lucknow: Ahead of fil-
ing his nomination for
the biennial elections
to the Rajya Sabha,
Rashtriya Lok Dal
(RLD) chief Jayant
Chaudhary on Sunday
said debates such as
those on the Gyanvapi
mosque should not be
entertained in modern
democratic India.
Chaudhary, who will
be filing his nomina-
tion on Monday, re-
mained tight-lipped on
whether he was upset
with the apparent delay
by the Samajwadi Par-
ty (SP) in announcing
his name for the Rajya
Sabha polls even as
sources in his party
said he was initially
“taken aback” by the
c o a l i t i o n
partner’s
attitude.

C h a u d -
hary, the joint candi-
date of the SP-RLD for
the Rajya Sabha elec-
tions, will be his par-
ty’s “lone ranger” in
the Upper House of the
Parliament. ”
If you look at it, the
law does not allow
these sorts of debates
(like the ongoing Gyan-
vapi issue) anymore.
We must not entertain
these debates in mod-
ern democratic India.
Let us not look to cre-
ate more disturbances
for the future using our
past as an excuse.
We need to be for-
ward-looking and
address the real issues
of real India,” Chaud-
hary said.
When asked about
his nomination, the
RLD chief said, “I
will be filing my
nomination papers on
Monday.
There was an event
in Delhi on the occa-
sion of the death anni-
versary of Chaudhary
Charan Singh. We are
doing a ‘Samajik Nyaay

asking for a caste cen-
sus along with other
issues. There will be
representatives from
various parties.”

Lucknow: The recent
Gyanvapi-Mathura
court cases have evoked
memories of the right-
wingschoolof thought’s
famous slogan of the
nineties-Ayodhya To
Kewal Jhaanki Hai,
Mathura Kashi Baaki
Hai (Ayodhya is just the
teaser, Mathura and
Kashi are still left).
However, at present,
the fact which sets the
Ayodhya case apart
from the Kashi-Mathu-
ra issues is that the for-
mer one was launched
and pursued rather ag-
gressively by the Vish-
wa Hindu Parishad
whereas there is ambi-
guity within the Sangh
Parivar about initiating
a campaign for posses-
sion of the disputed
sites in Varanasi and
Mathura.
It is evident from the
fact that the BJP, which
became the dominant
political force in the po-
litical landscape with
the help of the Ayodhya
issue, has not yet ap-
peared openly willing to
pursue the
Kashi-Mathura issues.
Rather saffron party
seems to be adopting a
very cautious and bal-
anced approach on
these issues. While re-
fraining from speaking
on the liberation of
these shrines, BJP lead-
ers have been emphasiz-
ing on the redevelop-
ment of these places.
Earlier, BJP MP from
Mathura Hema Malini
has urged PM Modi that
development should be
done in Krishna
Janmabhoomi Mathura
on the lines of Ayod-
hya-Kashi.
During election cam-
paign, stressing on mas-
sive development of
shrines, CM Yogi as-
serted that the BJP has
kept its word on build-
ing the Ram temple in
Ayodhya and after
Kashi, efforts are on to
boost development
works in Mathura too.
But apart from the
balanced statements of
CM and senior BJP
leaders, Deputy CM Ke-
shav Prasad Maurya
has apparently taken a
very vocal approach on
the issues of religious
places.
Earlier he has said
that construction of
grand temples is going
on in Ayodhya-Kashi,
now preparations are
on for Mathura. During
the news of Shivling be-
ing found in the recent
Gyanvapi survey, Kes-
hav Maurya tweeted,
“No matter how much
you hide the truth, but
one day it comes out be-
cause truth is Shiva.
Baba ki Jai, Har Har
Mahadev”.
Moreover, the RSS-af-
filiated Vishwa Hindu
Parishad (VHP) has
been in favor of not
stepping into the issues
of Gyanvapi and
Mathura until the con-
struction of Ram tem-
ple in Ayodhya is com-
pleted However, VHP’s
Union Minister and
Dharmacharya Sam-
park Pramukh Ashok
Tiwari has issued a
statement that the
meeting of the Kendri-
ya Margdarshak Man-
dal is scheduled on
June 11-12 in Haridwar.
The core issue of Krish-
na Janmabhoomi and
will also be included .
Lucknow(PTI): Af-
ter the construction

ple town of Kashi

Chief Minister Yogi

Sunday
.
There has been no

BJP’s one-day state
executive meeting in
Lucknow and men-
tioned recent festi-
vals to say that for
the first time in the
state the namaz on
the last Friday before
Eid was not held on
roads. Adityanath re-
ferred to the inaugu-
ration of the Kashi
Vishwanath Temple
Corridor, to say one
lakh devotees visit
Kashi every day and
the place is proving
the significance of
its name in line with
Prime Minister Nar-
endra Modi’s vision.
‘‘Ram Navami and
Hanuman Jayanti
were held peacefully
.
This was the first
time that the last Fri-
day namaz before Eid
was not held on the
streets. For namaz
there is a place of
worship, the
mosques where their
religious pro-
grammes can be
held,” he said.
Mentioning the
removal of loud-
speakers from reli-
gious places, he said,
“You must have seen
how the unnecessary
noise was got rid of.”

DEMAND TO HANDOVER SHRINE WAS
FIRST EXPRESSED IN 1949
2019 SUPREME COURT VERDICT ON
AYODHYA DISPUTE
The demand for handing over the three shrines, Ayodhya-
Kashi-Mathura, to the Hindus was first articulated by
the Hindu Mahasabha in 1949, a decade prior the RSS
included it in its agenda. From the eighties, the demand
in this regard started to revive anew. It was first done by
those individuals and organizations which at one point or
the other owed allegiance to the Congress rather than the
RSS. The right-wing camp has always insisted that Matter
of Faith cannot be settled by the Court of Law. But this idea
never became a deterrent in the way of approaching the
devotees to the court.
The Supreme Court’s verdict on the Ram janmabhoomi-
Babri Masjid land dispute in Ayodhya on November
9, 2019, settled the issue by giving ownership of the
disputed 2.77-acre land in Ayodhya to the Ram Janma-
bhoomi Trust. Taking a cue from the title suit over Ram
Jamabhoomi, petitions were filed in both Mathura and
Kashi on behalf of deities to get the adjacent mosques
removed. Like the Ram Lalla Virajman at Ayodhya,
petitions claimed that at Mathura and Kashi also, deities
were juridical persons and could own property.

YOUR
DAY
Horoscope by
Saurabbh Sachdeva
ith the onset
of the school
summer va-
cations, par-
ents, as well
as kids, are
in a tizzy about what to
do during this long
break. Usually
, there is
an inherent tussle that
takes place. While kids
want to focus on play-
ing, parents would like
them to be construc-
tively occupied. The
good news is, both can
be achieved without
much conflict, if only
we incorporate certain
guidelines for our sum-
mer holidays. Wonder-
ing how? Read on!
PRE-PLAN
A man with a plan is
always successful.
Likewise,forparentsto
have a plan that they
havedevised,discussed
and approved by the
kids always goes a long
way in avoiding con-
flict. Ideally, it helps if
the summer schedule
is a mix of holiday-
making, some absolute
downtime, a bit of
schoolhomework/revi-
sion, and a few fun ac-
tivities that also endow
students with great
skills. A good combina-
tion of work and play
will keep both parents
as well as kids, happy
. It
also allowed for the
much-needed ‘break’
forstudents,whilststill
providing enough con-
structive engagement
for them not to become
idle or destructive.
FAMILIAL
With an increasing
number of families
having shrunk into
tiny nuclear setups,
the holidays are a
great time for kids to
reconnect with close
family. Grandparents
of both sides, aunts
and uncles; these are
relationships worth
exploring, strengthen-
ing and nurturing.
Spending time with
family gives kids a vi-
tal perspective on their
roots, origins, where
they come from, and
who they are. So plan a
part of the holidays to
spend quality time
with close family that
doesn’t necessarily so-
licit interaction dur-
ing the working
months. Be it intra-
city or involving a bit
of travel; quality time
with extended family
is crucial to foster a
sense of family, be-
longing, identity and
connection.
PASSION PROJECT
Most students nowa-
days tend to keep bus-
ier than us adults.
Schoolwork, a myriad
of extra-curricular ac-
tivities, and other en-
gagements such as the
almost mandatory tui-
tion classes often rob
students of indulging
in their true passions.
The summer holidays,
therefore, serve as the
perfect antidote to life,
which can be a foil to
one’s inner cravings
and pursuits. Students
should use the holi-
days to get into one of
their most desired but
long-pending quests. It
could be anything, a
specific place to travel,
an attempt at writing
a story or a book, a
hunger to learn how to
act, ANYTHING. Cre-
ating the time and op-
portunity to pursue
that long-dormant pas-
sion can be a great
way of investing in
oneself.
GOOD-NATURED
We are also a society
that is fast and increas-
ingly losing a connec-
tion with nature. Sure,
students are made
aware of the planet’s
environmental prob-
lems at school, even
made to be part of var-
ious activities that
propagate the eco-
friendly message; most
of this however works
at a superficial level.
Kids should be encour-
aged to reconnect with
nature during the holi-
days. It can be a full-on
trek into the wilder-
ness, or even through
an easily-accom-
plished activity like
tending the garden.
Either way, personal
interaction with na-
ture has multiple ben-
efits ranging from and
not limited to a sense
of calm, a different
viewpoint and per-
spective on life, and a
chance to introspect.
ACTIVE
Finally, the summer
holidays are a wonder-
ful opportunity to be
active and get fit. A lot
of kids these days
don’t always get the
time or opportunity to
be sportingly/actively
engaged. The summer
presents that perfect
opportunity to get fit
while having a superb
time. Everyday activ-
ity such as Swimming,
for example, is the
ideal heat-buster
while also making for
a full-body and mind
workout. So swim, be
active, and get fit,
mind, body and soul.
The summer holi-
days in most parts of
India are long. They
present a chance for
kids and parents to
connect, bond and be
with each other like
normally they
wouldn’t be able to.
Aside from all the
many travel plans and
activities one could
and must plan, re-
member, be with your
parents. It’s time you
will never have again.
Create a deeper under-
standing and relation-
ship that goes beyond
the already-estab-
lished parent-child
status quo. Happy
Holidays!

  • 1. First India Bureau L u c k n o w : For mer Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Radha Mo- han Das Aggarwal, who left his Gorakhpur Ur- ban constituency for Yogi Adityanath to con- test in the recent As- sembly polls, was nomi- nated for the Rajya Sabha elections as the party named six candi- dates from Uttar Pradesh on Sunday . They have been working back-to- back for elections since the past one decade and the rewards are appar- ently not coming their way . “We began working in 2013 for the Lok Sab- ha elections in 2014 and then plunged into prep- arations for the 2017 as- sembly elections. With- out waiting for any break, we started pre- paring for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The lockdown gave us a small break but the par- ty started virtual inter- actions and we were kept busy . Then came the legis- lative council polls and then the panchayat polls and the 2022 as- sembly elections. Now we are busy with the Lok Sabha by-polls and the upcoming legisla- tive council and RS polls next month,” said a party worker. What is making the party work- ers restive is that they have not been given suitable rewards by the party leaders. “When elections come, it is the turncoats and outsiders who walk away with tickets and the commit- ted worker is left twid- dling his thumbs and waiting to begin work again,” said another party worker from Jaunpur who has been denied a ticket twice. BJP workers also complain that the new entrants into the party when they become min- isters - do not pay any attention to the cadres. ‘‘Many of them do not even recognise us, leave alone interact with us. We are not even given the privilege of getting any work done in our own government while these turncoats and allies walk away with all the goodies,” said another party worker from Agra. On one hand, it changed the image of the village and on the other hand, it protected women’s dignity . It also saved children from encephalitis.” Re- calling Central govern- ment schemes, CM Yogi said that through the Central and state govt schemes, the people of UP sensed the working of the double engine. “And the result of this was that the people of UP rejected all the mis- information by the op- position and voted to bring BJP back to UP,” he said. Yogi said that for the first time the BJP has a majority in the state legislative assembly and the council. He also announced that the new govern- ment is committed to fulfilling the resolu- tions that they had promised before the polls and for that bud- getary allocations were already made. He said, “The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan gave the child the right to life. And all of this became possible because of the Prime Minister’s vision. In that context Prime Minister Narendra Modi refer- ring to the number of unicorns surging to 100 and their valua- tion being more than 25 lakh crore may have sounded ironic. The income disparity does look stark but the fact that the coun- try has income and employ- ment generating unicorns in diverse fields should instill confidence for the country’s future. In his Mann ki Baat on Sun- day, the prime minister ex- pressed happiness over the rise in the number of unicorns. “Even during the pandemic In- dia’s startups continued to cre- ate wealth and value,” Modi said. He also pointed out that the average annual growth rate of Indian unicorns is more than those of some of the big countries. They reflect the spir- it of new India. Unicorns will set the best ex- ample if they pull the poor out of poverty. TOP TWEETS I n an important di- rection the Su- preme Court up- held the right of women to offer voluntary sex as legal. The courtsaid,“Itneednotbegain- said that notwithstanding the profession, every individual in this country has a right to a dignified life under Article 21 of the Constitution of India”. The directive was based on some recommendations of a Supreme Court-appointed committee. The recommenda- tion said that sex workers should not be arrested or pe- nalised or harassed or victim- ised during a raid on any brothel “since voluntary sex work is not illegal and only running a brothel is unlaw- ful”. Centre, however, has some reservations about the recommendation. Ideally, sex is one thing which money should not be al- lowedtobuy .Butinthecontext of world’s oldest profession it is no more than a utopian thought. Since Centre is mull- inganewlegislationonsubject it should consider legalizing prostitution as is the case in 15 countries including the Neth- erlands, UK, Germany, Brazil, France, Denmark, Australia, Indonesia,Greece,Canadaand Colombia among others. But it should not be without some re- strictions. Theauthoritiesmustbearin mind the failure of Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act while formulating the law on prosti- tution. Voluntary sex which the SC has legalised still leaves women vulnerable to exploita- tion by pimps and brothels. Still, it is a laudable order which will be ineffective with- out sensitisation of police who harasssexworkersratherthan treatingthemwithdignity .Itis for state govts to take responsi- bility of sensitising the cops. LAUDABLE ORDER ON SEX WORKERS Since the Centre is mulling a new legislation on the subject it should consider legalizing prostitution as is the case in 15 countries including the Netherlands, UK, Germany, Brazil, France, Denmark, Australia, Indonesia, Greece, Canada and Colombia among others. But it should not be without some restrictions I s India enters the Amrit Kal of her Independence, it is im- portanttosetatresttherecur- rent doubts about the ability, competence, andcapabilityof the governance professionals of this country . Research on thissubjectshowsarecurrent pattern - it happens every two decades. A hundred and one years ago, KPS Menon topped the ICS exam. Many in the ICS and the Secretary of state’s office felt that this was the beginning of the end of the ICS! How could an Indian be better than the best of Ox- bridge graduates? Two decades later, the civil services exams had to be dis- continued because of World War II. Again, the naysayers said that this was the begin- ningof theend, astherewould be no further recruitment. This was not all. After the British decided to leave India, the Secretary of state decided to dismember ICS in August/ Septemberof 1946. SardarPa- tel stepped in and called for a meeting with the Premiers of the eleven provinces (as the states were then called) Not only were the ICS and IP offic- ers asked to continue, but the Conference of Premiers also decided on the constitution of the IAS and the IPS and the joint recruitment and train- ing of all superior services. By the mid-sixties, most states had separated the judi- cial and executive functions of theDMs.It led to a seriesof articles in newspapers and journals saying that this would affect the prestige and power of the bureaucracy . Well, bythistime, theprimary focus of the state had shifted to Atma Nirbharta in food. While the agriculture depart- ment provided the seeds – the ecosystem of credit, market infrastructure and procure- ment were done by the civil services. In 1984, David Potter wrote the book India’s Political Ad- ministrators and said that civil services would be chal- lenged by elected Panchayats and municipal corporations. In his concluding remarks, he went ahead and announced (much like Fukuyama’s The end of History) that it would take not more than two dec- ades for the services to be wound up. The 73rd /74th amendment were enacted in 1994, but it was welcomed by members of the civil service. In fact, the LBSNAA and NIRD were closely engaged in the national consultations on this subject. In 2000, the late lamented StephenCohen, authorof sev- eral books on India and Paki- stan, and my mentor at the Brookings Institution Wash- ington DC asked me if a liter- ate India would be more diffi- culttoadminister.Iremember tellinghimveryclearlythatin the next two decades India would have shed the develop- ing nation tag, and become one of the fastest-growing economies, even as it will af- ford social security and pro- tectiontoherpeople.AndIam sogladtomentionthatthelast few years have been marked, not just by rapid economic growth, but also by strict en- forcementof theRighttoFood and the Right to Work. In and by themselves these are the largest public welfare pro- grammes in the world – and who is behind the successful rollout of these programmes. There is of course the fun- damental issue of how to bal- ancethetenuresforallIndian service officers between the centre and the state. I should however point out that in a purely technical sense, it is a central tenure is not a deputa- tion - for working for the Cen- tralgovernmentisnotonlyan imperativebutif onemaysay , a matter of right. Having established the twenty-year pattern of surge and settlement of criticism, let me say that twenty years from now, a similar commen- tary would appear on the edi- torialpagesof thisnewspaper. The problem with many crit- ics of the civil services is that they have fewer opportunities to interact with the next gen- eration of officers which is equally good, if not better. Haryana’s Rohtak seat MP Arvind Sharma, while targeting his own party, said that at one time there used to be 10 Brahmin chief minis- ters in the country but now their numbers are limited. Referring to the first Chief Minister of Haryana, Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Shar- ma, he said that when will a Brahmin become the Chief Minister in Haryana. Similarly, in Maharashtra, former BJP president Raosa- heb Danve said that he does not want Brahmin leaders to become only municipal councilors or municipal corpora- tion presidents, they should get a better posi- tions. Interestingly, it is for the first time, that such talk has arisen in- side the party. However, the leaders who raise their voices are not of very high stature or are not di- rectly blaming their party . But what they are pointing towards is be- ing mentioned by oth- er party leaders as well. Keep in mind that at this time BJP is rul- ing in most of the states of the country, however merely in As- sam does the commu- nity have its chief min- isterial representative. Earlier, the only Brah- min Chief Minister was Devendra Fadnavis. It is not that BJP is doing politics of back- ward castes and hence it is ignoring the upper castes. BJP has been making chief ministers of the upper castes but leaving Brahmins be- hind. Even the chief minister of the minori- ty Jain community was retained in Gujarat, who was removed last year. In Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, BJP has made Thakur the chief minister, while Tripura had a Kayastha chief minister, who has been removed this month and a member of the Vaish community has been made the Chief Minister. Keep in mind that despite all the displeasure ex- pressed in the Uttar Pradesh elections, Brahmins had voted for the BJP and almost all over the country Brah- min voters vote for the BJP in bulk. It is also to be noted that Brahmins are the largest populous caste in the country . BrahminleadersgrowingimpatientinBJP:Signsofsourness? Ear- lier, only the leaders of the Samajwadi Party used to wear red caps in the assembly, however, since this time the number of Samajwadi Party MLAs in the assembly is more than one hun- dred, hence ‘red caps’ are visible across the assembly seats. Earlier BJP leaders used to wear saffron gamcha but now they too have started wear- ing saffron cap. Keep in mind that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wore a saffron cap several times in the past. He also did a road show in Gujarat wear- ing a saffron cap. That is why the leaders of BJP have started wearing saffron caps in place of or along with saffron. So, the whole house is look- ing replete with red and saffron caps. But it is not that only these two colors are visible in the house. Yellow color has been added to it by Suheldev Bharatiya SamajParty .Thistime the MLAs who won from Omprakash Ra- jbhar’s party are com- ing to the house wear- ing a yellow cap and wearing a yellow gam- chha. One is the Politi- cal Affairs Committee of the Congress. The other is the task force set up for the prepara- tions for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and one is the committee to co- ordinate the Bharat Jodo Yatra. In this, the election preparation committee is headed by P Chidambaram and in- terestingly enough, it seems that all the con- tenders for the Rajya Sabha seat of the Con- gress have been placed in this committee. Com- mittee chairman P Chi- dambaram’s term of Rajya Sabha is also coming to an end and he is also a contender. Chidambaram is cur- rently a Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra. This time it is not yet decided whether he will go to the Upper House from Maharashtra it- self or he will be sent from his home state Ta- mil Nadu. Keep in mind that this time DMK has left one seat for the Con- gress. Meanwhile, an- other name in Chidam- baram’s committee is that of Mukul Wasnik who has been the gen- eral secretary of the party for the last 20 years. According to the rule of leaving office af- ter five consecutive years, he has to leave the post of General Sec- retary . He has been hop- ing to go to the Rajya Sabha for a long time and this time it is pos- sible that he will get a chance from his home state Maharashtra. The third name in Chidambaram’s com- mittee is that of Jairam Ramesh. He is a Rajya Sabha MP from Karna- taka and his term is also coming to an end and he is once again hoping to be sent to the Upper House from Kar- nataka itself. Like Chid- ambaram, Ramesh’s going to the Rajya Sab- ha is considered almost certain. In the commit- tee, the fourth name is of KC Venugopal, who is already in the Rajya Sabha. The fifth name is of Ajay Maken whi is the general secretary of the party and is in charge of Rajasthan. This time he is also hop- ing to get a Rajya Sabha nomination. However, there are already two external leaders as MPs from Rajasthan in the form of Manmohan Singh and KC Venugo- pal. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is the sixth name in the task force. She herself does not know whether she wants a Ra- jya Sabha seat or not, but many party leaders and her close people want to send her to Ra- jya Sabha from Chhat- tisgarh. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhu- pesh Baghel also wants the same. The seventh name in this committee is that of Randeep Sur- jewala, who is somehow doing all he can to go to the Upper House. Con- gress will get one seat in his home state Hary- ana, but everyone knows that Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s camp will not allow him to win if the party sends Surjewala to Haryana. That’s why he is trying for Rajya Sabha mem- bership from some oth- er state. All of Congress’ RS aspirants are in one ‘Nav Sankalp’ committee! Of the 111 km stretch, 58 km will pass through a tunnel. Of all the pil- lars installed for the bridge, height of the middle one is more than that of Qutab Minar. REPORT SAYS

Chaudhary, who will be filing his nomina- tion on Monday, re- mained tight-lipped on whether he was upset with the apparent delay by the Samajwadi Par- ty (SP) in announcing his name for the Rajya Sabha polls even as sources in his party said he was initially “taken aback” by the c o a l i t i o n partner’s attitude. O n c e e l e c t e d to the Ra- j y a S a b h a , C h a u d - hary, the joint candi- date of the SP-RLD for the Rajya Sabha elec- tions, will be his par- ty’s “lone ranger” in the Upper House of the Parliament. ” If you look at it, the law does not allow these sorts of debates (like the ongoing Gyan- vapi issue) anymore. We must not entertain these debates in mod- ern democratic India. Let us not look to cre- ate more disturbances for the future using our past as an excuse. We need to be for- ward-looking and address the real issues of real India,” Chaud- hary said. When asked about his nomination, the RLD chief said, “I will be filing my nomination papers on Monday. There was an event in Delhi on the occa- sion of the death anni- versary of Chaudhary Charan Singh. We are doing a ‘Samajik Nyaay conference’, and we are asking for a caste cen- sus along with other issues. There will be representatives from various parties.” Gyanendra Kumar Shukla Lucknow: The recent Gyanvapi-Mathura court cases have evoked memories of the right- wingschoolof thought’s famous slogan of the nineties-Ayodhya To Kewal Jhaanki Hai, Mathura Kashi Baaki Hai (Ayodhya is just the teaser, Mathura and Kashi are still left). However, at present, the fact which sets the Ayodhya case apart from the Kashi-Mathu- ra issues is that the for- mer one was launched and pursued rather ag- gressively by the Vish- wa Hindu Parishad whereas there is ambi- guity within the Sangh Parivar about initiating a campaign for posses- sion of the disputed sites in Varanasi and Mathura. It is evident from the fact that the BJP, which became the dominant political force in the po- litical landscape with the help of the Ayodhya issue, has not yet ap- peared openly willing to pursue the Kashi-Mathura issues. Rather saffron party seems to be adopting a very cautious and bal- anced approach on these issues. While re- fraining from speaking on the liberation of these shrines, BJP lead- ers have been emphasiz- ing on the redevelop- ment of these places. Earlier, BJP MP from Mathura Hema Malini has urged PM Modi that development should be done in Krishna Janmabhoomi Mathura on the lines of Ayod- hya-Kashi. During election cam- paign, stressing on mas- sive development of shrines, CM Yogi as- serted that the BJP has kept its word on build- ing the Ram temple in Ayodhya and after Kashi, efforts are on to boost development works in Mathura too. But apart from the balanced statements of CM and senior BJP leaders, Deputy CM Ke- shav Prasad Maurya has apparently taken a very vocal approach on the issues of religious places. Earlier he has said that construction of grand temples is going on in Ayodhya-Kashi, now preparations are on for Mathura. During the news of Shivling be- ing found in the recent Gyanvapi survey, Kes- hav Maurya tweeted, “No matter how much you hide the truth, but one day it comes out be- cause truth is Shiva. Baba ki Jai, Har Har Mahadev”. Moreover, the RSS-af- filiated Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has been in favor of not stepping into the issues of Gyanvapi and Mathura until the con- struction of Ram tem- ple in Ayodhya is com- pleted However, VHP’s Union Minister and Dharmacharya Sam- park Pramukh Ashok Tiwari has issued a statement that the meeting of the Kendri- ya Margdarshak Man- dal is scheduled on June 11-12 in Haridwar. The core issue of Krish- na Janmabhoomi and will also be included . Lucknow(PTI): Af- ter the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the tem- ple town of Kashi appears to be waking up, as are Mathura, Vrindavan, Vind- hyavasini Dham and Naimish Dham, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Sunday . There has been no communal riot in the state, he told the BJP’s one-day state executive meeting in Lucknow and men- tioned recent festi- vals to say that for the first time in the state the namaz on the last Friday before Eid was not held on roads. Adityanath re- ferred to the inaugu- ration of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor, to say one lakh devotees visit Kashi every day and the place is proving the significance of its name in line with Prime Minister Nar- endra Modi’s vision. ‘‘Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti were held peacefully . This was the first time that the last Fri- day namaz before Eid was not held on the streets. For namaz there is a place of worship, the mosques where their religious pro- grammes can be held,” he said. Mentioning the removal of loud- speakers from reli- gious places, he said, “You must have seen how the unnecessary noise was got rid of.” Balrampur(PTI): The stringent Nation- al Security Act (NSA) was been invoked against former Bal- rampur MP and Sama- jwadi Party leader Ri- zwan Zaheer, who is in jail in a murder case, by UP authorities, po- lice said on Saturday . According to Super- intendent of Police Rajesh Kumar Saxena, action has been taken against “mafia” leader Rizwan Zaheer under the NSA to maintain public peace and order. The order was is- sued on Saturday night and a copy was served to Zaheer in jail, he said. The NSA allows the detention of a person up to a year without any charge. Zaheer is in jail for the last five months in connection with the murder of Firoz Pap- pu, former chairman of Tulsipur Nagar Panchayat. Departmental action was taken against the Farenda police station in-charge after he slapped a woman who was making a video recording of him when he was trying to resolve a land dispute on Thana Samadhan Diwas. From the eighties, the demand in this regard started to revive anew. It was first done by those individuals and organizations which at one point or the other owed allegiance to the Congress rather than the RSS. The right-wing camp has always insisted that Matter of Faith cannot be settled by the Court of Law. But this idea never became a deterrent in the way of approaching the devotees to the court. The Supreme Court’s verdict on the Ram janmabhoomi- Babri Masjid land dispute in Ayodhya on November 9, 2019, settled the issue by giving ownership of the disputed 2.77-acre land in Ayodhya to the Ram Janma- bhoomi Trust. Taking a cue from the title suit over Ram Jamabhoomi, petitions were filed in both Mathura and Kashi on behalf of deities to get the adjacent mosques removed. Like the Ram Lalla Virajman at Ayodhya, petitions claimed that at Mathura and Kashi also, deities were juridical persons and could own property. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva ith the onset of the school summer va- cations, par- ents, as well as kids, are in a tizzy about what to do during this long break. Usually , there is an inherent tussle that takes place. While kids want to focus on play- ing, parents would like them to be construc- tively occupied. The good news is, both can be achieved without much conflict, if only we incorporate certain guidelines for our sum- mer holidays. Wonder- ing how? Read on! PRE-PLAN A man with a plan is always successful. Likewise, forparentsto have a plan that they havedevised, discussed and approved by the kids always goes a long way in avoiding con- flict. Ideally, it helps if the summer schedule is a mix of holiday- making, some absolute downtime, a bit of schoolhomework/revi- sion, and a few fun ac- tivities that also endow students with great skills. A good combina- tion of work and play will keep both parents as well as kids, happy . It also allowed for the much-needed ‘break’ forstudents, whilststill providing enough con- structive engagement for them not to become idle or destructive. FAMILIAL With an increasing number of families having shrunk into tiny nuclear setups, the holidays are a great time for kids to reconnect with close family. Grandparents of both sides, aunts and uncles; these are relationships worth exploring, strengthen- ing and nurturing. Spending time with family gives kids a vi- tal perspective on their roots, origins, where they come from, and who they are. So plan a part of the holidays to spend quality time with close family that doesn’t necessarily so- licit interaction dur- ing the working months. Be it intra- city or involving a bit of travel; quality time with extended family is crucial to foster a sense of family, be- longing, identity and connection. PASSION PROJECT Most students nowa- days tend to keep bus- ier than us adults. Schoolwork, a myriad of extra-curricular ac- tivities, and other en- gagements such as the almost mandatory tui- tion classes often rob students of indulging in their true passions. The summer holidays, therefore, serve as the perfect antidote to life, which can be a foil to one’s inner cravings and pursuits. Students should use the holi- days to get into one of their most desired but long-pending quests. It could be anything, a specific place to travel, an attempt at writing a story or a book, a hunger to learn how to act, ANYTHING. Cre- ating the time and op- portunity to pursue that long-dormant pas- sion can be a great way of investing in oneself. GOOD-NATURED We are also a society that is fast and increas- ingly losing a connec- tion with nature. Sure, students are made aware of the planet’s environmental prob- lems at school, even made to be part of var- ious activities that propagate the eco- friendly message; most of this however works at a superficial level. Kids should be encour- aged to reconnect with nature during the holi- days. It can be a full-on trek into the wilder- ness, or even through an easily-accom- plished activity like tending the garden. Either way, personal interaction with na- ture has multiple ben- efits ranging from and not limited to a sense of calm, a different viewpoint and per- spective on life, and a chance to introspect. ACTIVE Finally, the summer holidays are a wonder- ful opportunity to be active and get fit. A lot of kids these days don’t always get the time or opportunity to be sportingly/actively engaged. The summer presents that perfect opportunity to get fit while having a superb time. Everyday activ- ity such as Swimming, for example, is the ideal heat-buster while also making for a full-body and mind workout. So swim, be active, and get fit, mind, body and soul. The summer holi- days in most parts of India are long. They present a chance for kids and parents to connect, bond and be with each other like normally they wouldn’t be able to. Aside from all the many travel plans and activities one could and must plan, re- member, be with your parents. It’s time you will never have again. Create a deeper under- standing and relation- ship that goes beyond the already-estab- lished parent-child status quo. Happy Holidays!
