why there was no men-
tion of the mosque built
by Babur, which is at the
centreoftheRamJanma-

which is a detailed account of the life
and times of Mughal emperor Akbar.
On the 30th day of the daily hearing of
the case, the court asked the Muslim
petitioners in the case, “Why is it so?”
Ain-i-Akbari mentions minute details,
but there is no mention of the mosque
inAyodhya. Why is it not mentioned in
it? Was the mosque not there?
It may be noted here that Abul Fazal
was a minister in the court ofAkbar, and
the work of writingAin-i-Akbari in the
Persian language was completed under
his supervision in the 16th century. Its
second section mentions the “province
ofAwadh” as one of the largest cities in
India and a place sacred to Hindus.Ac-
cording to this, Awadh has been de-
scribed as the residence of Ramchandra
who lived here inTretaYuga.This book

which is “Ram Avatar”.
MYTHOLOGICAL BOOKS WERE
CITED DURING ARGUMENTS IN SC
In the Supreme Court, while hearing
the case, the evidence or arguments
presented in favour of Ram being born
in Ayodhya, mentions the importance
of Ayodhya in ‘Ramayana’ written by
Maharshi Valmiki and ‘Vaishnav
Khand of Skanda Purana’. According
to Ramayana (composed before the
writing of Mahabharata and Srimad
Bhagavad Gita), Ram was born in the
palace of King Dasharatha and his
mother’s name is Kaushalya. The court
has accepted that the exact place of
birth has not been mentioned in Rama-
yana. It was said in the court that Ayo-
dhya Mahatmay of Skanda Purana has
been made the basis for identifying the
place of Ram Janmabhoomi. Accord-
ing to historians, it was composed in
the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
However, the court rejected this argu-
ment of the historians.
RAMAYANA WAS TOLD TO BE
FROM 300 YEARS BC
A historian appearing in the court said
that the time of composition of Rama-
yana was 300 to 200 BC. Skanda Pura-
na was written in the eighth century.
According to this, visiting Ram’s birth-
place is equivalent to salvation and the
exact place of Ram’s birth is also men-
tioned in it. TheAyodhya Mahatmay of
this Purana contains details of the exact
place of Ram’s birth.According to this,
the birthplace of Ram is east of Vigh-
neshwar, north of Vishishtha and west
of Lomesh.To corroborate the informa-
tion written in the Ayodhya Mahatmay
of the Skanda Purana, several pieces of
evidence were presented in court.
HANS T BECKER’S RESEARCH
ALSO BECAME THE BASIS
During the cross-examination, Swami
Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati based
his arguments on Ayodhya Mahatmay
where he maintained that he had seen
Bada Sthan, Nageshwar Nath Temple,
Lomesh Rishi’s Ashram, Vighnesh
Pindarak (these two are not temples
but names of places) and Vashishtha
Kund. In the same context, there is
also mention of Tulsidas’s ‘Ramcharit
Manas’ which was written in 1631
(1574-75AD).According to one of its
chapters, Bal Kand, Vishnu had said
that he would be born in Kaushalpuri
as the son of Kaushalya and Dashara-
tha. Hans T Becker’s book is men-
tioned in many places in the SC’s deci-
sion. In 1984, Becker gave his re-
search paper on Ayodhya at the Uni-
versity of Groningen. It was published
in the form of a book in 1986. Becker
himself read many books and wrote
that a place namedAyodhya was iden-
tified in the Gupta period and it is also
mentioned in Brahmanda Purana and
Raghuvansh of Kalidasa.
WILLIAM FINCH’S VISIT ALSO
MENTIONED IN COURT
William Finch visited India between
1610 and 1611 and his travelogue
“Early Travels in India” mentions the
remnants of Lord Ramachandra’s pal-
ace and houses. Quoting the trave-
logues of Montgomery Martin, an
Anglo-Irish officer who visited India
in the 18th century, and Joseph Tie-
fenthaler (European missionary), the
SC judgment said that Hindus used to
worship Sita Rasoi, Swarg Dwaar and
Ram Jhula on the disputed land. Ac-
cording to this, before Awadh came
under British rule i.e. before 1856, a
large number of people used to circum-
ambulate the land here. An English
translation of Joseph Tiefenthaler’s
travelogue was presented at the court.
According to this, Aurangzeb con-
quered a fort named Ramkot and then
destroyed it and built a three-domed
Muslim temple in its place. However,
in most of the cases, Babur has been
mentioned instead of Aurangzeb.

The first IAS transfer list
of the newly formed gov-
ernment of Rajasthan
was released on Friday
night after a long wait.
Since a ban on transfer of
district level officials had
come into force, hence it
had become important to
release the jumbo 75
name transfer list primar-
ily revolving around Col-
lectors and ADMs.
It is notable that the list
has been prepared, after a
long time, in CS office
instead of CMO. New CS
Sudhansh Pant and Prin-
cipal Secretary DoP- He-
mant Gera - have played
a major role in the list.
While two dozen IAS
have ‘gained’through the
transfers, about a similar
number of officers have
not been able to feature in
that category.
The ‘gainers’ include
Prakash Sharma, Sid-
dharth Sihag, Himansu
Gupta, Namit Mehta,
Ashish Gupta, Kanaram,
Ajay Singh Rathore,
gauravAgrawal, Khushal
Yadav, Ravindra Goswa-
mi, Utsav Kaushal,
Gaurav Saini, Avdhesh
Meena, Devendra Kumar,
Akshay Godara, Somya
Jha,KanishkaKatariaand
Saloni Khemka.
On the other hand, the
officials who could not
score big are Rajendra
Shekhawat,Vishawa Mo-
han Sharma, Narendra
Gupta, Anil Agrawal,
Rukmani Riyar, MPMee-
na, Suresh Ola, Ashish
Modi, Arun Garg, Babu
Lal Goyal, Bachmesh
Agrawal, Nilabh Saxena,
Saurabh Swami, Om
Prakash Bairwa, Sitaram
Jat, Jasmeet Sandhu,
Ram Prakash and Tara
Chand Meena.
On of the notable
transfer in the list is that
of Sidharth Sihag who
has been posted as Joint
Secretary in CMO, which
is the first permanent
posting in CMO. 2012
batch IAS Sidharth has
served as Collector of
three districts. he has
served as Churu Collec-
tor for two years and his
jump to CMO is being
considered a major jump
from Churu Colelctorate.
Similarly, 2018 batch
officer Kanishka Kataria
has been appointed based
on his merit and capabil-
ity. He was all India top-
per of his batch. He be-
came IAS in his first at-
tempt and had left a hefty
paying private job ina
foreign country to be-
come IAS. But don’t
know why the previous
government kept him at
an arm’s length. How-
ever, his abilities have
been recognised and has
been given the responsi-
bility of JS - DoP. His
father Sanwar Mal Ver-
ma is also an IAS.
The transfer of Namit
Mehta from post of Col-
lector Pali to Bhilwara,
Alok Ranjan’s transfer
from Jhalawar Collector
to Chittorgarh, LN Man-
tri’s transfer from Dun-
garpur to Pali, Gaurav
Agrawal from Chittor-
garh to Jodhpur and
Ravindra Goswami
transfer from Bundi to
Kota Collector is actually
their promotion and is
also a certificate of the
capabilities of these IAS.
Vishwamohan Sharma
had become Kekri Col-
lector after going through
much difficulties. al-
though his appointment
as kekri collector, right
after his stint as Ajmer
Collector was not consid-
ered to be a right move,
but owing to Raghu Shar-
ma’s recommendation,
he was appointed as
Kekri Collector. Now his
post in Kekri is no more
as he has been posted in
midday meal in Jaipur.
Similarly, the position
of Collectors - Anil
Agrawal in Dholpur, MP
Meena in Kota, Suresh
Ola in Sawai Madhopur,
Ashish Modi in Bhilwara,
Neelabh Saxena in Rajsa-
mandandSaurabhSwami
in Sikar - were taken ow-
ing to their one sided role
in the assembly elections.
Avichal Chaturvedi
became Alwar Collector
after much deliberations
as he wanted to stay in
Jaipur owing to person-
al reasons. Now he has
returned back to Jaipur.
One section of BJP has
still not taken to the
transfer list since it con-
siders that a requisite
number of officials have
not been transferred
which will not send a
message that the gov-
ernment has changed.
They cite the continua-
tion of Collectors in Di-
visional Headquarters
like Jaipur, Udaipur,
Bikaner and Ajmer as
casein point.

Congress is preparing to
field big faces in Lok
Sabha elections as the
party wants to wash away
the stigma of not winning
a single seat in the past
two elections.
The party is consider-
ing the names of CP
Joshi, Govind Dotasara,
Sachin Pilot, Jitendra
Singh, Pratap Singh, Har-
ish Chaudhary andAshok

It is difficult for Con-
gress to win elections
only on basis of new fac-
es. Last time, many big
leaders did not want to
contest elections. In that
situtation, Congress had
to field candidates as a
formality at the last mo-

party will not repeat the
mistake this time.

“Gurukuls needed to protect India’s heritage”

Dehradun
efence Minister
Rajnath Singh
on Saturday said
Macaulay was sent to In-
dia by the Britishers to
throttle the country’s tra-
ditional system of educa-
tion and enslave Indians
mentally.
He said the revival of
‘gurukul’ was necessary
to counter the effects of
the Macaulay’s system of
education on Indian
minds but advised that
these traditional schools
should synthesise their
education with emerging
technologies like artifi-
cial intelligence and
quantum technology.
“Macaulay was sent to
India to enslave Indians
even mentally by colo-
nising their minds,” Ra-
jnath Singh said, address-
ing a large gathering of
seers and students at the
foundation laying cere-
mony of Patanjali Gu-

by the Central govern-

He was addressing the
‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp

“Five years as a minis-
ter and five years before
that have been the most
satisfying years for me. It
is because I have seen a
complete change in how
thegovernmentperforms.
I am also looking to see
how the bankers perform.
If you look at the change
in the government, it is
something that has gone
through every part. The
bureaucracy is more sen-
sible, bankers are more
friendly towards custom-
ers and every public-
dealing organisation to-
day is looking at people
very differently. That is
how ‘Viksit Bharat’ will
be created,” he said.
“Today, ‘Modi ki guar-
antee’ is something that
is believed not only in the
country but also in the
world. ‘Modi ki guaran-
tee’ means good govern-
ance and people-centric
policies. This means that
if someone is in trouble
abroad, whether it is
somebody who goes to
Saudi Arabia or the UAE
or students in Ukraine,
PM Modi is there for
them. This is a big differ-
ence that has happened in

“He (PM) has changed

a new message — Sabka

Scores of people lined
the route of the roadshow,
which was dotted with

the BJP chief who urged
the crowd to ensure that
the party repeats its 2019

With Nadda’s visit to

any seekers
have posed
the question:
What is en-
l i g h t e n -
ment? Enlightenment is
like the ocean in the para-
ble about a congregation of
river fishes who once got
together to discuss who
had seen the ocean.
None of them could ac-
tually say they had seen the
ocean. Then one fish said,
“I think my great grandfa-
ther had seen the ocean!”
A second fish said, “Yes,
yes. I have heard about
this.”
A third fish spoke up,
“Yes, certainly, his great-
grandfather had seen the
ocean.” So the fishes built
a huge temple and made a
statue of the great-grandfa-
ther of the first fish. They
said, “He had seen the
ocean. He had been con-
nected with the ocean.”
Enlightenment cannot
be talked about or under-
stood second-hand. It is the
very core of our being; it
implies the experience of
going into the core of our
self and living our life
from there.
We all come into this
world gifted with inno-
cence, but gradually, as we
become more intelligent,
we lose our innocence. We
are born with silence, but
as we grow up, we lose that
silence and are filled with
words. We live in our
hearts, to begin with, but as
time passes, we move into
our heads.
Now the reversal of this
journey is enlightenment.
It is the journey from the
head back to the heart,
from words back to si-
lence; it is the act of recov-
ering our innocence de-
spite the intelligence we
have developed. Although
it seems very simple, this
is a great achievement.
Knowledge should lead
you to that beautiful point
of being able to say “I
don’t know.” The purpose
of knowledge is ignorance.
The completion of knowl-
edge will lead you to
amazement and wonder. It
makes you fully aware of
this existence. Mysteries
are to be lived, not under-
stood. One can live life so
fully in its completeness,
in its totality.
Enlightenment is that
state of maturity, in which
one’s self is unshakable by
any circumstance. Come
what may, nothing can rob
you of your smile. You do
not identify with limited
boundaries; you feel that
“all that exists in this uni-
verse belongs to me”. This
is enlightenment.
The opposite of enlight-
enment - unenlightenment
- is easy to define. It ap-
pears when you limit your-
self by saying, “I belong to
this particular place”, or “I
am from that culture”.
It is rather like children
saying, “My dad is better
than your dad” or “My toy
is better than your toy.” I
think most people around
the world are stuck in that
mental age group. Only the
toys have changed. Adults
say, “My country is better
than your country.” If one
could take credit for all
that exists throughout the
ages and feel as though “all
this belongs to me”, then
that is a sign of maturity.
Memory can make you
either sad or enlightened.
Memory of events, or of
trivial experiences will
lead you into bondage. On
the other hand, memory of
yourself will liberate you.
The ever changing relativ-
ity- however good or bad it
may be- will bring you
bondage. The unchanging
relativity reminds you of
yourself. Memory of past
events and worries of the
world will diminish in the
infinity of the self.
You should be able to
say, “All this is my wealth,
because I belong to the Di-
vine.” The Divine has
manifested itself in the
form of various kinds of
knowledge, depending
upon the circumstances of
space and time. One be-
comes the knower of the
whole universe and sees
that “all the beautiful flow-
ers are from my garden”.
The whole evolution of
man is from being some-
body to being nobody - and
so, from being nobody to
being everybody. Have
you observed that young
children have that sense of
belonging, that oneness
with other beings, that in-
nocence?
As we grow up, we lose
that innocence and become
more cunning. Like the in-
nocence of an ignorant
person, the cunning of an
intelligent person has no
value.
Enlightenment is that
rare combination of inno-
cence and intelligence, a
state that is reached after
ignorance and cunning
have been renounced. You
must have the words to ex-
press your inner being; and
at the same time, you must
know the value of remain-
ing silent.
In such a state, the mind
is fully in the present mo-
ment. Whatever is neces-
sary is revealed to you in a
natural and spontaneous
way. You have to simply
sit and the song flows
through you.

THREEBIGMESSAGESOFPM
NARENDRAMODI’SJAIPURVISIT
First India Bureau
Jaipur
There are three big mes-
sages from PM Narendra
Modi’s visit to Jaipur.
The first is that like the
Gehlot regime, now no
MLAwill be the regional
chief minister, rather
MLAs themselves will
work within their scope
and within their authori-
ty. Moreover, MLAs will
not interfere in the post-
ing of Collector-SP to
Police Station Officers.
In the Gehlot regime,
postings from Collector,
SP to Patwari were done
only on the recommenda-
tion of the regional MLA
andtherewerecomplaints
of corruption in all this
work. Now the Prime
Minister has made a new
code of conduct for elect-
ed public representatives
for Rajasthan. Like Guja-
rat, the desire system is
likely to end in Rajasthan
too. No MP or MLA will
behave insultingly or
threateningly with gov-
ernment officials in the
field. Elected public rep-
resentatives will behave
in accordance with the
decency and civilized cul-
ture of BJP.
The second big mes-
sage is that there will be
no ‘political vendetta’ in
Rajasthan. This is a big
news that will bring relief
to the bureaucracy which
is scared of Income Tax
and ED. The Prime Min-
ister revealed in blunt
wordssaying,“Irresponsi-
ble attitude of MLAs has
come to my knowledge.
MLAs abuse officers and
doctors.All MLAs should
behave politely with the
general public and gov-
ernmentemployees.”This
announcement by the
Prime Minister created an
atmosphere of tremen-
dous enthusiasm in the
Rajasthan bureaucracy.
However, the policy of
zero tolerance in corrup-
tion cases will continue
and Bhajan Lal govt will
take prompt and strict ac-
tion on complaints related
to corruption.
Officers of Gehlot
camp are also happy with
this announcement of PM
Modi. Putting aside their
different political alle-
giances, the entire bu-
reaucracy is now becom-
ing one. And all these
people together will im-
plement the agenda of
PM-CM in Rajasthan.
Meanwhile, the third
message is that due to the
absence of interference
from MPs and MLAs in
the everyday work of the
administration, the bu-
reaucracy will remain
relatively more powerful.
And there will be continu-
ous remote monitoring of
the govt’s functioning
even at the PMO level.
Additionally, there will be
continuous monitoring
for successful monitoring
of central schemes. From
this point of view, the ap-
pointment of JP Gupta, a

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN JHARKHAND?
WHAT WILL NITISH KUMAR DO?
ou may insult Nitish Kumar by
calling him a ‘u-turner’, but you
cannot ignore his infallible hold
on the political barometer. Everyone is
equally impressed by his skill in political
drama. People close to Nitish believe that
‘Nitish can make a new blast on this Janu-
ary 22 i.e. the day of Shri Ram’s consecra-
tion ceremony in Ayodhya.’ However, even
Tejashwi Yadav’s patience is breaking as
Nitish has been in Bihar for a long time.
The expansion of the cabinet is being post-
poned and when Tejashwi wanted to get
the latest update, Nitish said ‘We will see
after 14’. Sensing the delicacy of the issue,
Lalu Yadav became active. In
order to convince Nitish, Lalu
hurriedly talked to the allies of
‘INDIA Bloc’ and talked about
making Nitish the coordina-
tor of the Alliance. Everyone
from Sharad Pawar to Uddhav
Thackeray agreed and at one
time even Arvind Kejriwal was
ready, but Mamata Baner-
jee’s consent could not be obtained on
this proposal, and the matter got stuck.
Lalu wanted that ‘Nitish should become
the convenor of the Alliance and lead the
opposition charge against the BJP across
the country and hand over the throne of
Bihar to Tejashwi and make Lallan Singh
his Deputy.’ It is believed that about 15
JDU MLAs and 6 MPs are in constant
contact with Lallan. Some 8 Congress
MLAs are also said to be in contact with
Ashok Chaudhary. Both BJP and RJD are
aware that if Assembly polls are held along
with Lok Sabha in Bihar, then Nitish will
be its biggest beneficiary and JDU’s seats
will increase. This time Nitish
wants to contest assembly
polls on 125 seats so that he
remains prominent in Bihar
politics. At the same time, the
state unit of BJP believes that
‘if this time BJP goes to the
elections on its own, then both
the base and vote percentage
of the party will increase.’
Y
ongress President
Mallikarjun
Kharge is still not
so convinced about Rahul
Gandhi’s proposed ‘Bharat
Jodo Nyay Yatra’. Sources
close to Kharge reveal that
in fact, the real concern of
the President is about the
party fund and if sources
are to be believed, only
around Rs 489 crores have
been collected in the party
fund so far. During Rahul’s
visit itself around Rs 250
crores would be spent and
general elections are also
round the corner,so how will
the party be able to contest
the Lok Sabha elections
with so little money left?
It is said that Kharge has
made Rahul aware of this
concern. On this, Rahul
suggested that, ‘If we are
so short of money, then
Congress will not pay the
expenses of any of its
candidates to contest the
Lok Sabha elections.’ On
this, Kharge said that ‘In this
situation, the party will face
shortage of good candi-
dates.’ But on this Rahul
is in revolutionary mode,
saying, ‘We are fighting to
bring a positive change in
the country, whoever wants
to join us in this fight should
come prepared for anything.
C
or the 2024 general elections, BJP’s target
is to win 425 seats. In the last Lok Sabha
elections of 2019, BJP had contested only
436 seats out of total 543, out of which the party had
won 303 seats. Of these, the party had to face defeat
on 160 seats and the deposits of BJP candidates
were forfeited on 51 seats. Under the alliance philoso-
phy, the party did not field its candidates on 56 seats
in three states i.e. Punjab, Bihar and Maharashtra.
BJP had fielded its candidates only on 3 out of 13
seats in Punjab, 25 out of 48 seats in Maharashtra
and only 17 out of 40 seats in Bihar. This time BJP
plans to field its candidates on all the seats of Punjab,
Bihar and Maharashtra. For this, the list of names
of possible candidates has started reaching party
president JP Nadda. In Western UP, BJP earlier
wanted to form an alliance with RLD, now the party
has made up its mind that it will contest the elections
alone there too. So, to reduce the influence of RLD
and SP in Western UP, organisations associated with
BJP are organising religious programmes every week
in the villages, where in the middle of the events, the
schemes of Modi government are discussed.
n Jharkhand, the sword of ED is con-
tinuously hanging over Hemant Soren
government and questions are also being
raised that if Hemant Soren goes to jail, will his
wife Kalpana Soren take over the reins of the state
government? But amid these speculations, state
Governor CP Radhakrishnan has gone to his home
state Tamil Nadu on holidays and the chances of his
returning to Ranchi before Monday are very slim. On
Dec 31, Hemant Soren’s most trusted MLA Sarfaraz
Ahmed suddenly resigned from his assembly seat,
and it is being speculated that he has vacated this
seat for Kalpana Soren to contest the elections. Any-
way, elections in Jharkhand were held in December
2019 and the first meeting of the Assembly was held
on 6 January 2020. Now by-elections can also be
held only if the term of the Assembly is more than
one year left. Soren has a majority of 47 MLAs in the
80-member Jharkhand Assembly. Also, it is not con-
stitutionally mentioned anywhere that if a CM goes to
jail for any reason, he cannot run his business from
jail. Kalpana is a non-tribal, originally from Odisha,
and whether or not she is sworn in as the CM
depends entirely on the discretion of the Governor.
So the question remains: What was Hemant Soren
thinking when he got Sarfaraz Ahmed to resign?

aise your
hand if you
regularly
find your-
self walk-
ing up a flight of stairs.
What about carrying
heavy bags of groceries?
How about picking up
your child or grandchild?
Most of us would raise
our hands to do at least
one of those weekly, or
even daily.
As people age, it can
become more and more
difficult to perform some
physical tasks, even
those that are normal ac-
tivities of daily living.
However, prioritizing
physical fitness and
health as you get older
can help you go through
your normal day-to-day
routine without feeling
physically exhausted at
the end of the day.
It can also help you
continue to have special
memories with your fam-
ily and loved ones that
you might not have been
able to have if you
weren’t physically ac-
tive. For example, I ran
two half-marathons with
my dad when he was in
his 60s!
I am an exercise phys-
iologist who studies how
people can use resistance
training to improve hu-
man performance,
whether it be in sports
and other recreational
settings, in everyday life,
or both. I am also a certi-
fied strength and condi-
tioning specialist. My
career has allowed me to
design exercise programs
for kids, college athletes
and elderly adults.
Staying physically ac-
tive as you get older
doesn’t need to include
running a half-marathon
or trying to be a body-
builder it could be as
simple as trying to get
through the day without
feeling winded after you
go up a flight of stairs.
Although our muscles
naturally get weaker as
we age, there are ways
we can combat that to
help improve our quality
of life as we get older.
MUSCLE LOSS AND
CHRONIC DISEASE
One of the most impor-
tant parts of exercise pro-
gramming, no matter
who I am working with,
is proper resistance train-
ing to build muscle
strength. Some amount
of age-related loss of
muscle function is nor-
mal and inevitable. But
by incorporating resist-
ance training that is ap-
propriate and safe at any
ability level, you can
slow down the rate of de-
cline and even prevent
some loss of muscle
function.
The medical term for a
condition that involves
age-related loss of mus-
cle function and mass is
sarcopenia. Sarcopenia
can begin as early as age
40, but it tends to be
more common in adults
age 60 and older. Sarco-
penia is associated with
several health issues such
as increased risk of fall-
ing, cardiovascular dis-
ease and metabolic dis-
ease, among others.
In one of our team’s
previous studies, we saw
that otherwise healthy
individuals with sarcope-
nia had issues delivering
vital nutrients to mus-
cles. This could lead to a
greater likelihood of
various diseases, such as
Type 2 diabetes, and
slow down recovery
from exercise.
Recent estimates sug-
gest that sarcopenia af-
fects 10% to 16% of the
elderly population world-
wide. But even if a per-
son doesn’t have clini-
cally diagnosed sarcope-
nia, they may still have
some of the underlying
symptoms that, if not
dealt with, could lead to
sarcopenia.
STRENGTH
TRAINING IS
KEY
So the question
is, what can be
done to re-
verse this de-
cline?
Recent ev-
idence sug-
gests that one
of the key fac-
tors leading to
sarcopenia is
low muscle
strength. In other
words, combating
or reversing sarcope-
nia, or both, may be
best done with a proper
resistance-training pro-
gram that prioritizes im-
proving strength. The
decline in muscle
strength seems to occur
at a much faster rate than
the decline in muscle
size, underscoring the
importance of proper
strength training as peo-
ple age. Continuing to
regularly strength train
with moderate to heavy
weights is not only effec-
tive at combating the
symptoms of sarcopenia
but also very safe when
done properly. The best
way to make sure you are
strength training proper-
ly is to seek out guidance
from a qualified individ-
ual such as a personal
trainer or strength and
conditioning specialist.
Despite the clear ben-
efits of strength training,
it’s been shown that only
about 13% of Americans
age 50 and older do some
form of strength training
at least twice a week.
FINDING WHAT
WORKS FOR YOU
So how does a person
properly strength train as
they age?
The National Strength
and Conditioning Asso-
ciation, a leading organi-
zation in advancing
strength and condition-
ing around the world,
states that for older
adults, two to three days
per week of strength
training can be incredi-
bly helpful for maintain-
ing healthy muscles and
bones and combating
several chronic condi-
tions.
The organization rec-
ommends that these
workouts involve one to
two exercises involv-
ing multiple joints
per major muscle
group, with six to
12 repetitions per
set. These are
done at an inten-
sity of 50% to
85% of what’s
known as a one-
repetition maxi-
mum – the most
weight you could
handle for a single
repetition – except
body weight exer-
cises that use one’s
body weight as the re-
sistance, such as pushups.
I would also recom-
mend resting for about
two to three minutes be-
tween sets, or even up to
five minutes if the set
was challenging. For
older adults, particularly
those age 60 and older,
the National Strength and
Conditioning Associa-
tion guidelines suggest
that a program like this
be performed two to
three days per week, with
24 to 48 hours between
sessions.
MAKING LIFE’S TASKS
LIGHTER
The guidelines above are
only one example out of
many options, but they
provide a framework that
you can use to build your
program. However, I
would highly recom-
mend seeking out a pro-
fessional in the field to
give specific exercise
programming advice that
can be tailored to your
own needs and goals as
you age.
Following such a pro-
gram would give your
muscles an excellent
stimulus to enhance
strength, while also al-
lowing enough recovery,
a very important consid-
eration as people age.

Supreme Court, while hearing the Ram Janmabhoomi dispute in 2019, had asked the Muslim side why there was no mention of the mosque built by Babur in Ain-i-Akbari, though the book talks about Ram PANKAJ SONI The writer is Associate Editor at First India he Supreme Court, while hearing the dispute on September 24, 2019, had asked the Muslim side why there was no men- tion of the mosque built by Babur, which is at the centreoftheRamJanma- bhoomi controversy, in Ain-i-Akbari, which is a detailed account of the life and times of Mughal emperor Akbar. On the 30th day of the daily hearing of the case, the court asked the Muslim petitioners in the case, “Why is it so?” Ain-i-Akbari mentions minute details, but there is no mention of the mosque inAyodhya. Why is it not mentioned in it? Was the mosque not there? It may be noted here that Abul Fazal was a minister in the court ofAkbar, and the work of writingAin-i-Akbari in the Persian language was completed under his supervision in the 16th century. Its second section mentions the “province ofAwadh” as one of the largest cities in India and a place sacred to Hindus.Ac- cording to this, Awadh has been de- scribed as the residence of Ramchandra who lived here inTretaYuga. This book contains details of nine incarnations (Avatar) of God (Lord Vishnu), one of which is “Ram Avatar”. MYTHOLOGICAL BOOKS WERE CITED DURING ARGUMENTS IN SC In the Supreme Court, while hearing the case, the evidence or arguments presented in favour of Ram being born in Ayodhya, mentions the importance of Ayodhya in ‘Ramayana’ written by Maharshi Valmiki and ‘Vaishnav Khand of Skanda Purana’. According to Ramayana (composed before the writing of Mahabharata and Srimad Bhagavad Gita), Ram was born in the palace of King Dasharatha and his mother’s name is Kaushalya. The court has accepted that the exact place of birth has not been mentioned in Rama- yana. It was said in the court that Ayo- dhya Mahatmay of Skanda Purana has been made the basis for identifying the place of Ram Janmabhoomi. Accord- ing to historians, it was composed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. However, the court rejected this argu- ment of the historians. RAMAYANA WAS TOLD TO BE FROM 300 YEARS BC A historian appearing in the court said that the time of composition of Rama- yana was 300 to 200 BC. Skanda Pura- na was written in the eighth century. According to this, visiting Ram’s birth- place is equivalent to salvation and the exact place of Ram’s birth is also men- tioned in it. TheAyodhya Mahatmay of this Purana contains details of the exact place of Ram’s birth.According to this, the birthplace of Ram is east of Vigh- neshwar, north of Vishishtha and west of Lomesh. To corroborate the informa- tion written in the Ayodhya Mahatmay of the Skanda Purana, several pieces of evidence were presented in court. HANS T BECKER’S RESEARCH ALSO BECAME THE BASIS During the cross-examination, Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati based his arguments on Ayodhya Mahatmay where he maintained that he had seen Bada Sthan, Nageshwar Nath Temple, Lomesh Rishi’s Ashram, Vighnesh Pindarak (these two are not temples but names of places) and Vashishtha Kund. In the same context, there is also mention of Tulsidas’s ‘Ramcharit Manas’ which was written in 1631 (1574-75AD).According to one of its chapters, Bal Kand, Vishnu had said that he would be born in Kaushalpuri as the son of Kaushalya and Dashara- tha. Hans T Becker’s book is men- tioned in many places in the SC’s deci- sion. In 1984, Becker gave his re- search paper on Ayodhya at the Uni- versity of Groningen. It was published in the form of a book in 1986. Becker himself read many books and wrote that a place namedAyodhya was iden- tified in the Gupta period and it is also mentioned in Brahmanda Purana and Raghuvansh of Kalidasa. WILLIAM FINCH’S VISIT ALSO MENTIONED IN COURT William Finch visited India between 1610 and 1611 and his travelogue “Early Travels in India” mentions the remnants of Lord Ramachandra’s pal- ace and houses. Quoting the trave- logues of Montgomery Martin, an Anglo-Irish officer who visited India in the 18th century, and Joseph Tie- fenthaler (European missionary), the SC judgment said that Hindus used to worship Sita Rasoi, Swarg Dwaar and Ram Jhula on the disputed land. Ac- cording to this, before Awadh came under British rule i.e. before 1856, a large number of people used to circum- ambulate the land here. An English translation of Joseph Tiefenthaler’s travelogue was presented at the court. According to this, Aurangzeb con- quered a fort named Ramkot and then destroyed it and built a three-domed Muslim temple in its place. However, in most of the cases, Babur has been mentioned instead of Aurangzeb. the work of writingAin-i-Akbari in the Persian language was completed under his supervision in the 16th century. Additional CS Medical and Health Shubhra Sin- gh congratulated him. Singh visited Swasthya Bhawan and while inter- acting with the senior of- ficials of the department, he said that health is an important dept and all of- ficers and personnel should work with a hu- mane approach to realize the vision of a healthy and prosperous Rajasthan. Singh said that it should be ensured that every per- son gets the benefits of health schemes. With this objective in mind, the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra is being organised. The dept should make Yatra a suc- cess and ensure that the best health services are provided to common people. Meanwhile, Food and Civil Supplies Min Sumit Godara also took charge at the Secretariat. Rajendra Jaipur The first IAS transfer list of the newly formed gov- ernment of Rajasthan was released on Friday night after a long wait. Since a ban on transfer of district level officials had come into force, hence it had become important to release the jumbo 75 name transfer list primar- ily revolving around Col- lectors and ADMs. It is notable that the list has been prepared, after a long time, in CS office instead of CMO. New CS Sudhansh Pant and Prin- cipal Secretary DoP- He- mant Gera - have played a major role in the list. While two dozen IAS have ‘gained’through the transfers, about a similar number of officers have not been able to feature in that category. The ‘gainers’ include Prakash Sharma, Sid- dharth Sihag, Himansu Gupta, Namit Mehta, Ashish Gupta, Kanaram, Ajay Singh Rathore, gauravAgrawal, Khushal Yadav, Ravindra Goswa- mi, Utsav Kaushal, Gaurav Saini, Avdhesh Meena, Devendra Kumar, Akshay Godara, Somya Jha,KanishkaKatariaand Saloni Khemka. On the other hand, the officials who could not score big are Rajendra Shekhawat,Vishawa Mo- han Sharma, Narendra Gupta, Anil Agrawal, Rukmani Riyar, MPMee- na, Suresh Ola, Ashish Modi, Arun Garg, Babu Lal Goyal, Bachmesh Agrawal, Nilabh Saxena, Saurabh Swami, Om Prakash Bairwa, Sitaram Jat, Jasmeet Sandhu, Ram Prakash and Tara Chand Meena. On of the notable transfer in the list is that of Sidharth Sihag who has been posted as Joint Secretary in CMO, which is the first permanent posting in CMO. 2012 batch IAS Sidharth has served as Collector of three districts. he has served as Churu Collec- tor for two years and his jump to CMO is being considered a major jump from Churu Colelctorate. Similarly, 2018 batch officer Kanishka Kataria has been appointed based on his merit and capabil- ity. He was all India top- per of his batch. He be- came IAS in his first at- tempt and had left a hefty paying private job ina foreign country to be- come IAS. But don’t know why the previous government kept him at an arm’s length. How- ever, his abilities have been recognised and has been given the responsi- bility of JS - DoP. His father Sanwar Mal Ver- ma is also an IAS. The transfer of Namit Mehta from post of Col- lector Pali to Bhilwara, Alok Ranjan’s transfer from Jhalawar Collector to Chittorgarh, LN Man- tri’s transfer from Dun- garpur to Pali, Gaurav Agrawal from Chittor- garh to Jodhpur and Ravindra Goswami transfer from Bundi to Kota Collector is actually their promotion and is also a certificate of the capabilities of these IAS. Vishwamohan Sharma had become Kekri Col- lector after going through much difficulties. al- though his appointment as kekri collector, right after his stint as Ajmer Collector was not consid- ered to be a right move, but owing to Raghu Shar- ma’s recommendation, he was appointed as Kekri Collector. Now his post in Kekri is no more as he has been posted in midday meal in Jaipur. Similarly, the position of Collectors - Anil Agrawal in Dholpur, MP Meena in Kota, Suresh Ola in Sawai Madhopur, Ashish Modi in Bhilwara, Neelabh Saxena in Rajsa- mandandSaurabhSwami in Sikar - were taken ow- ing to their one sided role in the assembly elections. Avichal Chaturvedi became Alwar Collector after much deliberations as he wanted to stay in Jaipur owing to person- al reasons. Now he has returned back to Jaipur. One section of BJP has still not taken to the transfer list since it con- siders that a requisite number of officials have not been transferred which will not send a message that the gov- ernment has changed. They cite the continua- tion of Collectors in Di- visional Headquarters like Jaipur, Udaipur, Bikaner and Ajmer as casein point. First India Bureau Jaipur Congress is preparing to field big faces in Lok Sabha elections as the party wants to wash away the stigma of not winning a single seat in the past two elections. The party is consider- ing the names of CP Joshi, Govind Dotasara, Sachin Pilot, Jitendra Singh, Pratap Singh, Har- ish Chaudhary andAshok Chandna as the candi- dates for the LS elections. It is difficult for Con- gress to win elections only on basis of new fac- es. Last time, many big leaders did not want to contest elections. In that situtation, Congress had to field candidates as a formality at the last mo- ment. The Congress party will not repeat the mistake this time. RAM MANDIR’S FOUNDATION STRONG WITH... PTI First India Bureau Thiruvananthapuram ExternalAffairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday lauded PM Narendra Modi and the work done by the Central govern- ment for over last nine years, stating that “Modi Ki Guarantee” means good governance and people-centric schemes. He was addressing the ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra’ here. “Five years as a minis- ter and five years before that have been the most satisfying years for me. It is because I have seen a complete change in how thegovernmentperforms. I am also looking to see how the bankers perform. If you look at the change in the government, it is something that has gone through every part. The bureaucracy is more sen- sible, bankers are more friendly towards custom- ers and every public- dealing organisation to- day is looking at people very differently. That is how ‘Viksit Bharat’ will be created,” he said. “Today, ‘Modi ki guar- antee’ is something that is believed not only in the country but also in the world. ‘Modi ki guaran- tee’ means good govern- ance and people-centric policies. This means that if someone is in trouble abroad, whether it is somebody who goes to Saudi Arabia or the UAE or students in Ukraine, PM Modi is there for them. This is a big differ- ence that has happened in the last 10 years,” the EAM added. The Union Minister further said, “In these ten years, I have had the great fortune of working very closely with PM Narendra Modi as his cabinet member.” PTI Chandigarh BJP chief JP Nadda on Saturday said PM Naren- dra Modi has changed the country’s political cul- ture that used to revolve around caste, creed, and vote bank politics. Nadda held a road- show in Haryana’s Panchkula and expressed confidence that the BJP would sweep all the 10 Lok Sabha Seats in the state in the upcoming general elections. “He (PM) has changed the culture of politics in the country which was earlier based on caste and creed... divisive politics and vote bank politics were practised for a long time until PM Modi gave a new message — Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sab- kaVishwas,SabkaPrayas — and said that the coun- try can move ahead with the mantra,” Nadda said. Scores of people lined the route of the roadshow, which was dotted with party flags, and showered flowers on the vehicle of the BJP chief who urged the crowd to ensure that the party repeats its 2019 parliamentary polls per- formance and wins all 10 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the upcoming general elections. With Nadda’s visit to Haryana coming after BJP’s victory in the Ra- jasthan, Madhya Pradesh and ChhattisgarhAssem- bly polls, the BJP chief told the gathering, this enthusiasm shows you want to take the country and the state forward and make Narendra Modi the PM for the third time. When he asked how many of the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana will the BJP win, the crowd re- plied,“Duskidus(all10)” Nadda was accompa- nied by Haryana CM ML Khattar and State BJP chief Nayab Singh Saini on the vehicle decorated with marigold garlands during the roadshow. PTI New Delhi The panel on ‘One Na- tion, One Election’led by former president Ram Nath Kovind has invited suggestions from the public “for making ap- propriate changes in the existing legal administra- tive framework to enable simultaneous elections in the country”. The suggestions can be posted on the committee’s website onoe.gov.in or sent by e-mail to sc-hlc@ gov.in, the notice said. The committee has held two meetings since it was constituted in Sep- tember last year. It had also recently written to political parties seeking their views and an inter- action on a “mutually agreed date” on the idea of holding simultaneous polls. It had later sent a reminder to the parties. Letters were sent to six national parties, 33 state parties and seven regis- tered unrecognised par- ties. Agencies Lucknow More and more issues are emerging, instead of getting resolved, be- tween the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) – the two main con- stituents of the I.N.D.I.A. bloc in UP. The latest stumbling block between the SPand the Congress is the Bahu- jan Samaj Party (BSP). While the SP is against the BSP joining the alli- ance of 28 Opposition parties, the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President Ajay Rai, is urging BSP President Mayawati to “seriously consider” joining the group. SP’s representative in the bloc’s coordination committee, Javed Ali Khan, said, “Ajay Rai has a BJP background. And the Congress must take cognisance of his remarks.” Tension between the two parties has height- ened because of this. • 7. any seekers have posed the question: What is en- l i g h t e n - ment? Enlightenment is like the ocean in the para- ble about a congregation of river fishes who once got together to discuss who had seen the ocean. None of them could ac- tually say they had seen the ocean. Then one fish said, “I think my great grandfa- ther had seen the ocean!” A second fish said, “Yes, yes. I have heard about this.” A third fish spoke up, “Yes, certainly, his great- grandfather had seen the ocean.” So the fishes built a huge temple and made a statue of the great-grandfa- ther of the first fish. They said, “He had seen the ocean. He had been con- nected with the ocean.” Enlightenment cannot be talked about or under- stood second-hand. It is the very core of our being; it implies the experience of going into the core of our self and living our life from there. We all come into this world gifted with inno- cence, but gradually, as we become more intelligent, we lose our innocence. We are born with silence, but as we grow up, we lose that silence and are filled with words. We live in our hearts, to begin with, but as time passes, we move into our heads. Now the reversal of this journey is enlightenment. It is the journey from the head back to the heart, from words back to si- lence; it is the act of recov- ering our innocence de- spite the intelligence we have developed. Although it seems very simple, this is a great achievement. Knowledge should lead you to that beautiful point of being able to say “I don’t know.” The purpose of knowledge is ignorance. The completion of knowl- edge will lead you to amazement and wonder. It makes you fully aware of this existence. Mysteries are to be lived, not under- stood. One can live life so fully in its completeness, in its totality. Enlightenment is that state of maturity, in which one’s self is unshakable by any circumstance. Come what may, nothing can rob you of your smile. You do not identify with limited boundaries; you feel that “all that exists in this uni- verse belongs to me”. This is enlightenment. The opposite of enlight- enment - unenlightenment - is easy to define. It ap- pears when you limit your- self by saying, “I belong to this particular place”, or “I am from that culture”. It is rather like children saying, “My dad is better than your dad” or “My toy is better than your toy.” I think most people around the world are stuck in that mental age group. Only the toys have changed. Adults say, “My country is better than your country.” If one could take credit for all that exists throughout the ages and feel as though “all this belongs to me”, then that is a sign of maturity. Memory can make you either sad or enlightened. Memory of events, or of trivial experiences will lead you into bondage. On the other hand, memory of yourself will liberate you. The ever changing relativ- ity- however good or bad it may be- will bring you bondage. The unchanging relativity reminds you of yourself. Memory of past events and worries of the world will diminish in the infinity of the self. You should be able to say, “All this is my wealth, because I belong to the Di- vine.” The Divine has manifested itself in the form of various kinds of knowledge, depending upon the circumstances of space and time. One be- comes the knower of the whole universe and sees that “all the beautiful flow- ers are from my garden”. The whole evolution of man is from being some- body to being nobody - and so, from being nobody to being everybody. Have you observed that young children have that sense of belonging, that oneness with other beings, that in- nocence? As we grow up, we lose that innocence and become more cunning. Like the in- nocence of an ignorant person, the cunning of an intelligent person has no value. Enlightenment is that rare combination of inno- cence and intelligence, a state that is reached after ignorance and cunning have been renounced. You must have the words to ex- press your inner being; and at the same time, you must know the value of remain- ing silent. In such a state, the mind is fully in the present mo- ment. Whatever is neces- sary is revealed to you in a natural and spontaneous way. You have to simply sit and the song flows through you. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL TOP TWEETS SPIRITUAL SPEAK He who can curb his wrath as soon as it arises, as a timely antidote will check snake’s venom that so quickly spreads — such a monk gives up the here and the beyond, just as a serpent sheds its worn-out skin. BUDDHA EXPRESSING INNER SELF The whole evolution of man is from being somebody to being nobody - and so, from being nobody to being everybody. Have you ob- served that young children have that sense of belong- ing, that oneness with other beings, that innocence? As we grow up, we lose that innocence and become more cunning. Like the innocence of an ignorant person, the cunning of an intelligent person has no value. The details of how a mob attacked the ED team mem- bers and vandalized their vehicles it is obvious that Shahjahan is law unto himself in the Sandeshkhali, North Parganas. T ll the stars point to a win-win year for the Bharatiya Janata Party. 2024 being an elec- tion year the buildup to the consecration of Ram temple atAyodhya coupled with reports of eco- nomic development the party is riding the crest of a favourable wave. The noise aroundAyodhya temple is deafening for the opposition parties. No matter what their political response is, the BJP has given them no quarter. The I.N.D.I.A. groups counter to BJP’s rapier-like thrusts on the dissonance in its camp, the failings of its leaders and lack of a cred- ible response to the BJP’s poll agenda of Ram tem- ple have left it flail- ing. The whole world has started accepting this,” Shekha- wat said. He was ad- dressing a program under Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra organized at Pratapnagar in Jodhpur on Saturday. He said that in the last seventy years, things could not be done as they should have been. “The pace of develop- ment of the country was very slow under the pre- vious governments, but ever since Narendra Modi became PM, he re- solved that his schemes would bring change in the lives of the villages and the poor,” he said. THREEBIGMESSAGESOFPM NARENDRAMODI’SJAIPURVISIT First India Bureau Jaipur There are three big mes- sages from PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Jaipur. The first is that like the Gehlot regime, now no MLAwill be the regional chief minister, rather MLAs themselves will work within their scope and within their authori- ty. Moreover, MLAs will not interfere in the post- ing of Collector-SP to Police Station Officers. In the Gehlot regime, postings from Collector, SP to Patwari were done only on the recommenda- tion of the regional MLA andtherewerecomplaints of corruption in all this work. Now the Prime Minister has made a new code of conduct for elect- ed public representatives for Rajasthan. Like Guja- rat, the desire system is likely to end in Rajasthan too. No MP or MLA will behave insultingly or threateningly with gov- ernment officials in the field. Elected public rep- resentatives will behave in accordance with the decency and civilized cul- ture of BJP. The second big mes- sage is that there will be no ‘political vendetta’ in Rajasthan. This is a big news that will bring relief to the bureaucracy which is scared of Income Tax and ED. The Prime Min- ister revealed in blunt wordssaying,“Irresponsi- ble attitude of MLAs has come to my knowledge. MLAs abuse officers and doctors. All MLAs should behave politely with the general public and gov- ernmentemployees.”This announcement by the Prime Minister created an atmosphere of tremen- dous enthusiasm in the Rajasthan bureaucracy. However, the policy of zero tolerance in corrup- tion cases will continue and Bhajan Lal govt will take prompt and strict ac- tion on complaints related to corruption. Officers of Gehlot camp are also happy with this announcement of PM Modi. Putting aside their different political alle- giances, the entire bu- reaucracy is now becom- ing one. And all these people together will im- plement the agenda of PM-CM in Rajasthan. Meanwhile, the third message is that due to the absence of interference from MPs and MLAs in the everyday work of the administration, the bu- reaucracy will remain relatively more powerful. And there will be continu- ous remote monitoring of the govt’s functioning even at the PMO level. Additionally, there will be continuous monitoring for successful monitoring of central schemes. From this point of view, the ap- pointment of JP Gupta, a top Gujarat cadre officer of Rajasthan origin, as CMO will be an impor- tant announcement. Overall, these three messages of the PM will completely change the entire face of Rajasthan’s politics and bureaucracy and a new political and administrative cul- ture will come in the next 100 days. WHAT WILL NITISH KUMAR DO? ou may insult Nitish Kumar by calling him a ‘u-turner’, but you cannot ignore his infallible hold on the political barometer. Everyone is equally impressed by his skill in political drama. People close to Nitish believe that ‘Nitish can make a new blast on this Janu- ary 22 i.e. the day of Shri Ram’s consecra- tion ceremony in Ayodhya.’ However, even Tejashwi Yadav’s patience is breaking as Nitish has been in Bihar for a long time. The expansion of the cabinet is being post- poned and when Tejashwi wanted to get the latest update, Nitish said ‘We will see after 14’. Sensing the delicacy of the issue, Lalu Yadav became active. In order to convince Nitish, Lalu hurriedly talked to the allies of ‘INDIA Bloc’ and talked about making Nitish the coordina- tor of the Alliance. Everyone from Sharad Pawar to Uddhav Thackeray agreed and at one time even Arvind Kejriwal was ready, but Mamata Baner- jee’s consent could not be obtained on this proposal, and the matter got stuck. Lalu wanted that ‘Nitish should become the convenor of the Alliance and lead the opposition charge against the BJP across the country and hand over the throne of Bihar to Tejashwi and make Lallan Singh his Deputy.’ It is believed that about 15 JDU MLAs and 6 MPs are in constant contact with Lallan. Some 8 Congress MLAs are also said to be in contact with Ashok Chaudhary. Both BJP and RJD are aware that if Assembly polls are held along with Lok Sabha in Bihar, then Nitish will be its biggest beneficiary and JDU’s seats will increase. This time Nitish wants to contest assembly polls on 125 seats so that he remains prominent in Bihar politics. At the same time, the state unit of BJP believes that ‘if this time BJP goes to the elections on its own, then both the base and vote percentage of the party will increase.’ Y ongress President Mallikarjun Kharge is still not so convinced about Rahul Gandhi’s proposed ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’. Sources close to Kharge reveal that in fact, the real concern of the President is about the party fund and if sources are to be believed, only around Rs 489 crores have been collected in the party fund so far. During Rahul’s visit itself around Rs 250 crores would be spent and general elections are also round the corner,so how will the party be able to contest the Lok Sabha elections with so little money left? It is said that Kharge has made Rahul aware of this concern. On this, Rahul suggested that, ‘If we are so short of money, then Congress will not pay the expenses of any of its candidates to contest the Lok Sabha elections.’ On this, Kharge said that ‘In this situation, the party will face shortage of good candi- dates.’ But on this Rahul is in revolutionary mode, saying, ‘We are fighting to bring a positive change in the country, whoever wants to join us in this fight should come prepared for anything. C or the 2024 general elections, BJP’s target is to win 425 seats. In the last Lok Sabha elections of 2019, BJP had contested only 436 seats out of total 543, out of which the party had won 303 seats. Of these, the party had to face defeat on 160 seats and the deposits of BJP candidates were forfeited on 51 seats. Under the alliance philoso- phy, the party did not field its candidates on 56 seats in three states i.e. Punjab, Bihar and Maharashtra. BJP had fielded its candidates only on 3 out of 13 seats in Punjab, 25 out of 48 seats in Maharashtra and only 17 out of 40 seats in Bihar. This time BJP plans to field its candidates on all the seats of Punjab, Bihar and Maharashtra. For this, the list of names of possible candidates has started reaching party president JP Nadda. In Western UP, BJP earlier wanted to form an alliance with RLD, now the party has made up its mind that it will contest the elections alone there too. So, to reduce the influence of RLD and SP in Western UP, organisations associated with BJP are organising religious programmes every week in the villages, where in the middle of the events, the schemes of Modi government are discussed. n Jharkhand, the sword of ED is con- tinuously hanging over Hemant Soren government and questions are also being raised that if Hemant Soren goes to jail, will his wife Kalpana Soren take over the reins of the state government? But amid these speculations, state Governor CP Radhakrishnan has gone to his home state Tamil Nadu on holidays and the chances of his returning to Ranchi before Monday are very slim. On Dec 31, Hemant Soren’s most trusted MLA Sarfaraz Ahmed suddenly resigned from his assembly seat, and it is being speculated that he has vacated this seat for Kalpana Soren to contest the elections. Any- way, elections in Jharkhand were held in December 2019 and the first meeting of the Assembly was held on 6 January 2020. Now by-elections can also be held only if the term of the Assembly is more than one year left. Soren has a majority of 47 MLAs in the 80-member Jharkhand Assembly. Also, it is not con- stitutionally mentioned anywhere that if a CM goes to jail for any reason, he cannot run his business from jail. Kalpana is a non-tribal, originally from Odisha, and whether or not she is sworn in as the CM depends entirely on the discretion of the Governor. So the question remains: What was Hemant Soren thinking when he got Sarfaraz Ahmed to resign? F I BJP’S TARGET IS 425 LOK SABHA SEATS THERE IS STILL A TUSSLE BETWEEN RAHUL AND KHARGE?

What about carrying heavy bags of groceries? How about picking up your child or grandchild? Most of us would raise our hands to do at least one of those weekly, or even daily. As people age, it can become more and more difficult to perform some physical tasks, even those that are normal ac- tivities of daily living. However, prioritizing physical fitness and health as you get older can help you go through your normal day-to-day routine without feeling physically exhausted at the end of the day. It can also help you continue to have special memories with your fam- ily and loved ones that you might not have been able to have if you weren’t physically ac- tive. For example, I ran two half-marathons with my dad when he was in his 60s! I am an exercise phys- iologist who studies how people can use resistance training to improve hu- man performance, whether it be in sports and other recreational settings, in everyday life, or both. I am also a certi- fied strength and condi- tioning specialist. My career has allowed me to design exercise programs for kids, college athletes and elderly adults. Staying physically ac- tive as you get older doesn’t need to include running a half-marathon or trying to be a body- builder it could be as simple as trying to get through the day without feeling winded after you go up a flight of stairs. Although our muscles naturally get weaker as we age, there are ways we can combat that to help improve our quality of life as we get older. MUSCLE LOSS AND CHRONIC DISEASE One of the most impor- tant parts of exercise pro- gramming, no matter who I am working with, is proper resistance train- ing to build muscle strength. Some amount of age-related loss of muscle function is nor- mal and inevitable. But by incorporating resist- ance training that is ap- propriate and safe at any ability level, you can slow down the rate of de- cline and even prevent some loss of muscle function. The medical term for a condition that involves age-related loss of mus- cle function and mass is sarcopenia. Sarcopenia can begin as early as age 40, but it tends to be more common in adults age 60 and older. Sarco- penia is associated with several health issues such as increased risk of fall- ing, cardiovascular dis- ease and metabolic dis- ease, among others. In one of our team’s previous studies, we saw that otherwise healthy individuals with sarcope- nia had issues delivering vital nutrients to mus- cles. This could lead to a greater likelihood of various diseases, such as Type 2 diabetes, and slow down recovery from exercise. Recent estimates sug- gest that sarcopenia af- fects 10% to 16% of the elderly population world- wide. But even if a per- son doesn’t have clini- cally diagnosed sarcope- nia, they may still have some of the underlying symptoms that, if not dealt with, could lead to sarcopenia. STRENGTH TRAINING IS KEY So the question is, what can be done to re- verse this de- cline? Recent ev- idence sug- gests that one of the key fac- tors leading to sarcopenia is low muscle strength. In other words, combating or reversing sarcope- nia, or both, may be best done with a proper resistance-training pro- gram that prioritizes im- proving strength. The decline in muscle strength seems to occur at a much faster rate than the decline in muscle size, underscoring the importance of proper strength training as peo- ple age. Continuing to regularly strength train with moderate to heavy weights is not only effec- tive at combating the symptoms of sarcopenia but also very safe when done properly. The best way to make sure you are strength training proper- ly is to seek out guidance from a qualified individ- ual such as a personal trainer or strength and conditioning specialist. Despite the clear ben- efits of strength training, it’s been shown that only about 13% of Americans age 50 and older do some form of strength training at least twice a week. FINDING WHAT WORKS FOR YOU So how does a person properly strength train as they age? The National Strength and Conditioning Asso- ciation, a leading organi- zation in advancing strength and condition- ing around the world, states that for older adults, two to three days per week of strength training can be incredi- bly helpful for maintain- ing healthy muscles and bones and combating several chronic condi- tions. The organization rec- ommends that these workouts involve one to two exercises involv- ing multiple joints per major muscle group, with six to 12 repetitions per set. These are done at an inten- sity of 50% to 85% of what’s known as a one- repetition maxi- mum – the most weight you could handle for a single repetition – except body weight exer- cises that use one’s body weight as the re- sistance, such as pushups. I would also recom- mend resting for about two to three minutes be- tween sets, or even up to five minutes if the set was challenging. For older adults, particularly those age 60 and older, the National Strength and Conditioning Associa- tion guidelines suggest that a program like this be performed two to three days per week, with 24 to 48 hours between sessions. MAKING LIFE’S TASKS LIGHTER The guidelines above are only one example out of many options, but they provide a framework that you can use to build your program. However, I would highly recom- mend seeking out a pro- fessional in the field to give specific exercise programming advice that can be tailored to your own needs and goals as you age. Following such a pro- gram would give your muscles an excellent stimulus to enhance strength, while also al- lowing enough recovery, a very important consid- eration as people age.
