human breath sensor
based on metal oxides

ing at room temperature.
The device’s primary
function is to measure
alcohol content in the

some changes in sensing
layers and the use of an
array of sensors.
There was a greater
need for the development

the growing concerns
about the adverse impact
of air pollution on human
health and the environ-

Hence, it motivated

CHANGING PLACES
IN GLOBAL ECONOMY
apan, once proudly holding the title of the
world’s third-largest economy, has recently
conceded its position to Germany after slip-
ping into recession.According to official data released
on February 15, Japan’s economy managed a growth
of 1.9 percent. However, a significant 18 percent de-
preciation in the value of the yen against the dollar in
2022 and 2023 played a pivotal role in this shift.
Recession is weak or negative growth for a sus-
tained period with rise in unemployment.
Despite Germany’s current GDP of $4.5 trillion,
securing its place as the third-largest economy may
not be certain, as it
grapples with “multi-
ple crises” that have
led to a 0.3 percent
decline in GDP. The
German statistical
office attributes this
setback to soaring
prices across “all
stages of the eco-
nomic process”,
which have subdued
growth prospects.
Meanwhile, with
India ascending to
the fifth spot, the
United Kingdom
now occupies the
sixth position in
terms of GDP. How-
ever, mirroring Ja-
pan’s fate, the UK faces the looming spectre of reces-
sion if its economy fails to rebound over the next two
quarters. Concerns heightened after the economy
contracted by 0.1 percent between July and Septem-
ber, followed by a further 0.3 percent decline be-
tween October and December. This downturn marks
the UK economy’s most dismal performance since
the 2009 financial crisis, underscoring the urgency
for swift and effective measures to spur growth and
stave off recessionary pressures.
For India the forecasts remain promising. Global
brokerage firm Jefferies predicted that by 2027, just
three years from now, India would be the world’s
third largest economy by 2027.

MIND
GAME
Quantum physics is a two-
edged sword, however,
when it comes to explain-
ing the mind. Its principles
have been used to justify a
conscious universe or not,
depending on the perspec-
tive of the thinker who is
wielding the theory.he pre-
dominant aim is always to
rescue the materialist (now
generally called physical-
ist) viewpoint.
The fallacy of physical-
ism runs much deeper
even than this. Why is
oxygen gaseous while
iron is hard? A glance at
the periodic chart of the
elements reveals that an
iron atom is larger than
an oxygen atom, but this
fact has nothing to do with
hardness. Because they
are the first two elements
in the periodic chart.
WHYYOURBRAINISN’T
EXPERIENCINGANYTHING
ven as we
pass through
a golden age
for brain sci-
ence, only
the future will determine
whether the whole field is
based on an unproven as-
sumption,namely,thatonce
you understand the brain,
you understand the mind.
At best, the notion that
Brain=Mind is touch and
go. When you try to figure
out where thoughts, feel-
ings, and sensations come
from, you find yourself in a
strange domain filled with
mirrors, illusions, and a
shaky grasp of reality. The
mindishardertohuntdown
than the mythical unicorn
because, with the mind, the
hunter and the hunted are
the same.
This frustrating obstacle
has led to speculation that
swings between two ex-
tremes: At one extreme,
occupied by strict materi-
alists, consciousness is
pure illusion created by
brain chemistry. At the
other extreme, occupied by
anyone who doesn’t really
want an explanation, con-
sciousness is a given that
defies exploration, much
as water is a given to a fish.
Must the riddle of the
mind remain a riddle? For
answers, relying on
Brain=Mind is a dead end,
even though that’s the po-
sition adopted wholesale
by neuroscience. The com-
plexity of the human nerv-
ous system is fascinating,
but the mind doesn’t need
the brain in order to exist.
Consciousness preceded
all living things by being
fundamental in creation.
Over the past decade or
so, the notion that con-
sciousness is innate in the
universe, as built-in as
gravity, has gained in stat-
ure. Some leading cosmol-
ogists are circling back to
the insights of quantum
pioneers like Max Planck
and Erwin Schrödinger.
Planck declared that it was
impossible to “get behind
consciousness,” meaning
that consciousness can’t be
explained by referring to
anything more primal.
Schrödinger held that con-
sciousness cannot be sub-
divided; there is only one
consciousness, even
though it appears to be sub-
divided into billions of in-
dividual minds. To use an
honored analogy from the
Vedanta tradition in India,
pure gold can be made into
countless objects, but in es-
sence, they are all gold.
Quantum physics is a
two-edged sword, howev-
er, when it comes to ex-
plaining the mind. Its prin-
ciples have been used to
justify a conscious uni-
verse or not, depending on
the perspective of the
thinker who is wielding the
theory. The predominant
aim is always to rescue the
materialist (now generally
called physicalist) view-
point. A sharp break is all
but impossible even among
far-seeing physicists and
neuroscientists.
On the sidelines, the
physicalist view is steadily
eroding even without the
thorny issue of conscious-
ness to contend with. It is
agreed among quantum
theorists that subatomic
particles are essentially
mathematical constructs,
withnofixedpropertiesthat
resemble tangible objects.
So how did rocks, clouds,
mountains, and trees get
their physical properties?
How do we get from math-
ematics,whichhasnophys-
ical properties, to the hard-
ness of granite and the
sweetness of strawberries?
It’s a classic example of
“you can’t get there from
here.” Physicalism isn’t ap-
plicable to the mind.Atoms
and molecules can’t think,
and the human brain con-
sists of nothing but ordi-
nary organic molecules that
are shuffled around not
very differently from heart
or liver cells. This obvious-
ness of this objection is so
glaring, you wonder how it
can be denied. Making the
brain the source of the mind
is like making the colors on
Rembrandt’s palette the
source of his genius.
The fallacy of physical-
ism runs much deeper even
than this. Why is oxygen
gaseous while iron is hard?
A glance at the periodic
chart of the elements re-
veals that an iron atom is
larger than an oxygen atom,
but this fact has nothing to
do with hardness. Because
they are the first two ele-
ments in the periodic chart,
you might suppose that hy-
drogen and helium are gas-
es, but the third element is
lithium, a soft, silvery met-
al. That is unpredictable
from the lithium atom,
much less why it should be
medically effective for bi-
polar disorder.
Examine the physical
structure of brain cells as
deeply as you want, and
there is no hint at the fact
that the brain produces a
3-Dimageoftheworld.Nor
does a close examination of
specific brain areas explain
how we convert invisible
photons, the quanta of light,
into sight, the vibration of
air into sound, and so on
through all five senses.
What lies beyond physi-
calism and its almost total
dominance in science? No
one can predict, although a
paradigm shift is inevitable,
because of the objections
just raised, and many more.
We don’t even know what
a thought is or have the
ability to predict what our
next thought will be. For
now, here are some quota-
tions from a thinker who
looked to the mind’s far-
thest horizon and beyond.
His name was Vasistha, a
Vedic sage writing many
centuries ago, but almost
eerily anticipating the most
far-seeing speculations in
current cosmology.
l “The entire universe is
forever the same as the
consciousness that dwells
in every atom, even as an
ornament is non-different
from gold.”
l “Cosmic consciousness
alone exists now and ever;
in it are no worlds, no cre-
ated beings. That con-
sciousness reflected in itself
appears to be creation.”
l “This consciousness is not
knowable: when it wishes
to become the knowable, it
is known as the universe.”
l “The world exists because
consciousness is, and
the world is the body of
consciousness.”
THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY
THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL
Physicalism isn’t applicable to the mind. Atoms and
molecules can’t think, and the human brain
consists of nothing but ordinary organic molecules
that are shuffled around not very differently from
heart or liver cells. This obviousness of this
objection is so glaring, you wonder how it can be
denied. Making the brain the source of the mind is
like making the colors on Rembrandt’s palette the

ODISHA NEEDS DOUBLE ENGINE SARKAR TO
ENSURE STEADY PROGRESS: RAJNATH SINGH
Berhampur: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh
on Thursday emphasised the importance of
establishing a “double engine” government in
Odisha to ensure steady progress for the state, align-
ing it with the development trajectory of the rest of
the country. Singh said this while addressing a public
meeting at Ambapua near Berhampur town here.
Party workers from five Lok Sabha segments such
as Berhampur, Aska, Bhubaneswar, Kandhamal and
Puri attended the meeting. “No force can stop BJP
from forming the government in Odisha this time,”
he said. Encouraging party workers to engage with
the public, Singh urged them to communicate the
welfare measures initiated by the Modi government
for various segments of society. He called upon BJP
workers to commit to the formation of a “double-en-
gine sarkar” in Odisha, asserting that the party would
perform well not only in the Lok Sabha polls but also
in the Vidhan Sabha elections, which are scheduled
alongside the Lok Sabha polls. “We will not only do
well in Lok Sabha polls, but BJP will also do well in
the Vidhan Sabha polls,” he asserted.

lobal invest-

firm Jefferies
has said that with a re-
newed Capital Expendi-
ture cycle and robust
earnings profile, Indian
markets will continue to
deliver attractive growth
over the next 5-7 years.
It further observes that
Indian markets are still
under penetrated with
just 4.7 per cent of
household savings in eq-
uities. However, digital
advancement in India has
blurred the lines between
traditional and retail in-
vestors.
With technology at
their fingertips, retail in-
vestors now enjoy un-
precedented access to the
stock market, thus de-
mocratizing the investor
profile.
Furthermore, the Sys-
tematic Investment
Plans (SIPs) have
gained immense popu-
larity reflecting a disci-
plined approach to in-
vestment among retail
investors.
The report says “With

through mutual funds by
regulators and the Fi-
nance Ministry, we ex-
pect to see much more
savings flowing into In-
dia’s equity markets.”

OPPORTUNE TIME FOR MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES
Jefferies further says that a strong growth profile, rising
weight of Indian markets and track record of generating
high returns should attract incremental foreign invest-
ment flows. Citing the example of South Korean multinational
Hyundai India’s decision to list its Indian subsidiary, the report
says time is opportune for several multinational companies with
a strong foothold in the country to become listed entities.” If
larger global companies like Amazon, Samsung, Apple, Toyota
etc. were to think on these lines – it can be a game changer for
Indian equity capital markets” it adds.
SUSTAINED REFORMS HAVE LAID
FOUNDATION FOR STRONG FUTURE
The report credits sustained re-
forms undertaken by the Govern-
ment for creating an ecosystem
for high growth. “Since 2014, the Modi
government has successfully delivered on
a set of reforms with the aim of boosting
'Ease of Doing Business' in the country.
The landmark GST reform of 2017 com-
pressed a multitude of taxation structures
into a common national system, akin to
creating a 'Eurozone' style flow of goods
and services across the Indian states. The
Bankruptcy Law of 2016 proved crucial in
accelerating the cleanup of the bad loans
from the banking system. The Real Estate
Regulatory Act (RERA) of 2017 helped to
clean up the vast, unorganized property
sector” the report adds. In conclusion the
Jefferies report says “In a world of rising
geo-political tensions, India has deftly
managed to remain on good terms with
the G7 while also being fully signed up
member of BRICS, as reflected in the
widely acknowledged success of the G20
Summit held in Delhi last September”.

markets are
touching new
heights every day de-
spite the whirlwind of
uncertainties. The situa-
tion in the market is such
that there are so many
fluctuations in a single
day that it becomes dif-
ficult to predict what the
future trend of the mar-
ket will be. In such a
situation, investors
should be extremely
cautious while making
new investments and
should also pay special
attention to booking
profits on their old in-
vestments.
There is no doubt that
the Indian economy is on
the path of improvement,
there will be small and
big obstacles in this path,
but no one expects any
serious decline. But de-
spite this, the continuous
selling by foreign institu-
tional investors raises
doubts about this. It
could be asked that when
the market is booming
and the economy is on
track, then why are for-
eign investors continu-
ously selling their goods
despite the prospects of
development. I had also
mentioned in my previ-
ous articles that as long
as the earnings are re-
flected only in the share
prices, there will be no
profit from it, the profit
is only visible in the
bank account.
In such a situation,
common investors
should keep evaluating
their investments con-
tinuously and if there is a
continuous falling trend
in any stock, no matter
what the reason, then that
stock should be shown
the way out of the portfo-
lio as soon as possible.

decisions at his level in
258 cases, including
confidential matters,
without calling a meet-
ing of the Commission.
In these cases, the Chair-
man used special pow-
ers and completed the
formalities by taking
comments from the
members through circu-
lation. Some members
of the Commission were
already under suspicion,
but with this new revela-
tion, the Chairman has
also come into the dock.
This picture of the
functioning of the Com-
mission came to light
when the Personnel De-
partment gathered com-
plete information regard-
ing the matter raised by
MLA Hanuman Beniwal
in the Assembly regard-
ing the RPSC.
An investigation re-
vealed that no meeting of
the full bench of the
Commission was called
from January 2023 last
year to January 2024 this
year. During this period,
decisions on 258 mat-
ters, including confiden-
tial matters, were taken
at the level of the Chair-
man. Broadly speaking,
during this entire year,
all types of decisions
were passed through cir-
culation only. After the
formation of the BJP
government in the state,
on January 23, 2024, fol-
lowing the instructions
of the Cabinet, a meeting
of the Full Commission
was held in which the
date of the RAS exami-
nation was postponed.
In response to the Per-
sonnel Department, the
RPSC has stressed a
‘loophole’in the rules for
not deciding the Full
Commission meeting.
Citing the rules, RPSC
has said that given the
workload, the meeting of
the entire Commission is
organised as per require-
ment and if there is any
necessary agenda, the
meeting is organised im-
mediately. In those cases
that have to be disposed
of quickly, the comments
of all the members are
taken through circula-
tion. The big question
that arises regarding this
argument is whether all
the 258 cases in the entire
year were of the nature of
quick disposal.
When First India spoke
to a former chairman of
the RPSC on this matter,
he said that in major cas-
es, decisions are taken
only by calling a meeting
of the Commission. De-
cisions are taken through
circulation only in ex-
tremely urgent situations.
He also questioned that
when the Chairman has
to make all the decisions,
then what is the need to
have members in the
Commission?

ave you ever
dreamed of
t r a v e l l i n g
through time,
like characters
do in science
fiction movies? For centuries,
the concept of time travel has
captivated people’s imagina-
tions. Time travel is the con-
cept of moving between differ-
ent points in time, just like you
move between different places.
In movies, you might have
seen characters using special
machines, or magical devices
or even hopping into a futuris-
tic car to travel backwards or
forward in time.
But is this just a fun idea for
movies, or could it happen?
The question of whether
time is reversible remains one
of the biggest unresolved ques-
tions in science. If the universe
follows the laws of thermody-
namics, it may not be possible.
The second law of thermody-
namics states that things in the
universe can either remain the
same or become more disor-
dered over time.
It’s a bit like saying you
can’t unscramble eggs once
they’ve been cooked. Accord-
ing to this law, the universe can
never go back exactly to how
it was before. Time can only go
forward, like a one-way street.
TIME IS RELATIVE
However, physicist Albert
Einstein’s theory of special
relativity suggests that time
passes at different rates for dif-
ferent people. Someone speed-
ing along on a spaceship mov-
ing close to the speed of light
– 671 million miles per hour!
– will experience time slow-
er than a person on Earth.
People have yet to
build spaceships that
can move at speeds
anywhere near as fast
as light, but astronauts
who visit the Interna-
tional Space Station
orbit around the Earth
at speeds close to 17,500
mph.Astronaut Scott Kel-
ly has spent 520 days at the
International Space Station,
and as a result, has aged a little
more slowly than his twin
brother – and fellow astro-
naut – Mark Kelly. Scott
used to be 6 minutes
younger than his twin
brother. Now, because
Scott was travelling so
much faster than Mark
and for so many days,
he is 6 minutes and 5
milliseconds younger.
Some scientists are
exploring other ideas that
could theoretically allow
time travel. One concept in-
volves wormholes, or hypo-
thetical tunnels in space that
could create shortcuts for
journeys across the uni-
verse. If someone could
build a wormhole and
then figure out a way to
move one end at close to the
speed of light – like the hy-
pothetical spaceship men-
tioned above – the mov-
ing end would age more
slowly than the sta-
tionary end. Someone
who entered the mov-
ing end and exited the
wormhole through the
stationary end would
come out in their past.
However, wormholes
remain theoretical Scien-
tists have yet to spot one. It
also looks like it would be in-
credibly challenging to send
humans through a worm-
hole space tunnel.
PARADOXES AND
FAILED DINNER
PARTIES
There are also para-
doxes associated with
time travel. The fa-
mous “grandfather par-
adox” is a hypothetical
problem that could arise if
someone travelled back in
time and accidentally pre-
vented their grandparents from
meeting. This would create a
paradox where you were
never born, which raises
the question: How could
you have travelled back
in time in the first
place? It’s a mind-boggling
puzzle that adds to the mystery
of time travel.
Famously, physicist Ste-
phen Hawking tested the pos-
sibility of time travel by
throwing a dinner party where
invitations noting the date,
time and coordinates were not
sent out until after it had hap-
pened. He hoped that his invi-
tation would be read by some-
one living in the future, who
had the capabilities to travel
back in time. But no one
showed up.
As he pointed out: “The best
evidence we have that time
travel is not possible, and nev-
er will be, is that we have not
been invaded by hordes of
tourists from the future.”
TELESCOPES ARE
TIME MACHINES
Interestingly, astrophysicists
armed with powerful tele-
scopes possess a unique form
of time travel. As they peer into
the vast expanse of the cosmos,
they gaze into the past uni-
verse. Light from all galaxies
and stars takes time to travel,
and these beams of light carry
information from the distant
past. When astrophysicists ob-
serve a star or a galaxy through
a telescope, they are not seeing
it as it is in the present, but as
it existed when the light began
its journey to Earth millions to
billions of years ago.
NASA’s newest space tele-
scope, the James Webb Space
Telescope, is peering at galax-
ies that were formed at the
very beginning of the Big
Bang, about 13.7 billion years
ago.
While we aren’t likely to
have time machines like the
ones in movies anytime soon,
scientists are actively re-
searching and exploring new
ideas. But for now, we’ll have
to enjoy the idea of time travel
in our favourite books, movies
and dreams.

T CHANGING PLACES IN GLOBAL ECONOMY apan, once proudly holding the title of the world’s third-largest economy, has recently conceded its position to Germany after slip- ping into recession.According to official data released on February 15, Japan’s economy managed a growth of 1.9 percent. However, a significant 18 percent de- preciation in the value of the yen against the dollar in 2022 and 2023 played a pivotal role in this shift. Recession is weak or negative growth for a sus- tained period with rise in unemployment. Despite Germany’s current GDP of $4.5 trillion, securing its place as the third-largest economy may not be certain, as it grapples with “multi- ple crises” that have led to a 0.3 percent decline in GDP. The German statistical office attributes this setback to soaring prices across “all stages of the eco- nomic process”, which have subdued growth prospects. Meanwhile, with India ascending to the fifth spot, the United Kingdom now occupies the sixth position in terms of GDP. How- ever, mirroring Ja- pan’s fate, the UK faces the looming spectre of reces- sion if its economy fails to rebound over the next two quarters. Concerns heightened after the economy contracted by 0.1 percent between July and Septem- ber, followed by a further 0.3 percent decline be- tween October and December. This downturn marks the UK economy’s most dismal performance since the 2009 financial crisis, underscoring the urgency for swift and effective measures to spur growth and stave off recessionary pressures. For India the forecasts remain promising. Global brokerage firm Jefferies predicted that by 2027, just three years from now, India would be the world’s third largest economy by 2027. Its principles have been used to justify a conscious universe or not, depending on the perspec- tive of the thinker who is wielding the theory.he pre- dominant aim is always to rescue the materialist (now generally called physical- ist) viewpoint. The fallacy of physical- ism runs much deeper even than this. Why is oxygen gaseous while iron is hard? A glance at the periodic chart of the elements reveals that an iron atom is larger than an oxygen atom, but this fact has nothing to do with hardness. Because they are the first two elements in the periodic chart. WHYYOURBRAINISN’T EXPERIENCINGANYTHING ven as we pass through a golden age for brain sci- ence, only the future will determine whether the whole field is based on an unproven as- sumption, namely, thatonce you understand the brain, you understand the mind. At best, the notion that Brain=Mind is touch and go. When you try to figure out where thoughts, feel- ings, and sensations come from, you find yourself in a strange domain filled with mirrors, illusions, and a shaky grasp of reality. The mindishardertohuntdown than the mythical unicorn because, with the mind, the hunter and the hunted are the same. This frustrating obstacle has led to speculation that swings between two ex- tremes: At one extreme, occupied by strict materi- alists, consciousness is pure illusion created by brain chemistry. At the other extreme, occupied by anyone who doesn’t really want an explanation, con- sciousness is a given that defies exploration, much as water is a given to a fish. Must the riddle of the mind remain a riddle? For answers, relying on Brain=Mind is a dead end, even though that’s the po- sition adopted wholesale by neuroscience. The com- plexity of the human nerv- ous system is fascinating, but the mind doesn’t need the brain in order to exist. Consciousness preceded all living things by being fundamental in creation. Over the past decade or so, the notion that con- sciousness is innate in the universe, as built-in as gravity, has gained in stat- ure. Some leading cosmol- ogists are circling back to the insights of quantum pioneers like Max Planck and Erwin Schrödinger. Planck declared that it was impossible to “get behind consciousness,” meaning that consciousness can’t be explained by referring to anything more primal. Schrödinger held that con- sciousness cannot be sub- divided; there is only one consciousness, even though it appears to be sub- divided into billions of in- dividual minds. To use an honored analogy from the Vedanta tradition in India, pure gold can be made into countless objects, but in es- sence, they are all gold. Quantum physics is a two-edged sword, howev- er, when it comes to ex- plaining the mind. Its prin- ciples have been used to justify a conscious uni- verse or not, depending on the perspective of the thinker who is wielding the theory. The predominant aim is always to rescue the materialist (now generally called physicalist) view- point. A sharp break is all but impossible even among far-seeing physicists and neuroscientists. On the sidelines, the physicalist view is steadily eroding even without the thorny issue of conscious- ness to contend with. It is agreed among quantum theorists that subatomic particles are essentially mathematical constructs, withnofixedpropertiesthat resemble tangible objects. So how did rocks, clouds, mountains, and trees get their physical properties? How do we get from math- ematics,whichhasnophys- ical properties, to the hard- ness of granite and the sweetness of strawberries? It’s a classic example of “you can’t get there from here.” Physicalism isn’t ap- plicable to the mind.Atoms and molecules can’t think, and the human brain con- sists of nothing but ordi- nary organic molecules that are shuffled around not very differently from heart or liver cells. This obvious- ness of this objection is so glaring, you wonder how it can be denied. Making the brain the source of the mind is like making the colors on Rembrandt’s palette the source of his genius. The fallacy of physical- ism runs much deeper even than this. Why is oxygen gaseous while iron is hard? A glance at the periodic chart of the elements re- veals that an iron atom is larger than an oxygen atom, but this fact has nothing to do with hardness. Because they are the first two ele- ments in the periodic chart, you might suppose that hy- drogen and helium are gas- es, but the third element is lithium, a soft, silvery met- al. That is unpredictable from the lithium atom, much less why it should be medically effective for bi- polar disorder. Examine the physical structure of brain cells as deeply as you want, and there is no hint at the fact that the brain produces a 3-Dimageoftheworld.Nor does a close examination of specific brain areas explain how we convert invisible photons, the quanta of light, into sight, the vibration of air into sound, and so on through all five senses. What lies beyond physi- calism and its almost total dominance in science? No one can predict, although a paradigm shift is inevitable, because of the objections just raised, and many more. We don’t even know what a thought is or have the ability to predict what our next thought will be. For now, here are some quota- tions from a thinker who looked to the mind’s far- thest horizon and beyond. His name was Vasistha, a Vedic sage writing many centuries ago, but almost eerily anticipating the most far-seeing speculations in current cosmology. l “The entire universe is forever the same as the consciousness that dwells in every atom, even as an ornament is non-different from gold.” l “Cosmic consciousness alone exists now and ever; in it are no worlds, no cre- ated beings. That con- sciousness reflected in itself appears to be creation.” l “This consciousness is not knowable: when it wishes to become the knowable, it is known as the universe.” l “The world exists because consciousness is, and the world is the body of consciousness.” THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL Physicalism isn’t applicable to the mind. Atoms and molecules can’t think, and the human brain consists of nothing but ordinary organic molecules that are shuffled around not very differently from heart or liver cells. This obviousness of this objection is so glaring, you wonder how it can be denied. It further observes that Indian markets are still under penetrated with just 4.7 per cent of household savings in eq- uities. However, digital advancement in India has blurred the lines between traditional and retail in- vestors. With technology at their fingertips, retail in- vestors now enjoy un- precedented access to the stock market, thus de- mocratizing the investor profile. Furthermore, the Sys- tematic Investment Plans (SIPs) have gained immense popu- larity reflecting a disci- plined approach to in- vestment among retail investors. The report says “With growing awareness around investment through mutual funds by regulators and the Fi- nance Ministry, we ex- pect to see much more savings flowing into In- dia’s equity markets.” CREDITS MODI GOVT FOR BOOSTING ‘EASE OF DOING BUSINESS Jefferies projects optimistic outlook for India’s economy, equity markets G India to be the third largest economy by 2027 OPPORTUNE TIME FOR MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES Jefferies further says that a strong growth profile, rising weight of Indian markets and track record of generating high returns should attract incremental foreign invest- ment flows. Citing the example of South Korean multinational Hyundai India’s decision to list its Indian subsidiary, the report says time is opportune for several multinational companies with a strong foothold in the country to become listed entities.” If larger global companies like Amazon, Samsung, Apple, Toyota etc. were to think on these lines – it can be a game changer for Indian equity capital markets” it adds. SUSTAINED REFORMS HAVE LAID FOUNDATION FOR STRONG FUTURE The report credits sustained re- forms undertaken by the Govern- ment for creating an ecosystem for high growth. “Since 2014, the Modi government has successfully delivered on a set of reforms with the aim of boosting 'Ease of Doing Business' in the country. The landmark GST reform of 2017 com- pressed a multitude of taxation structures into a common national system, akin to creating a 'Eurozone' style flow of goods and services across the Indian states. The Bankruptcy Law of 2016 proved crucial in accelerating the cleanup of the bad loans from the banking system. The Real Estate Regulatory Act (RERA) of 2017 helped to clean up the vast, unorganized property sector” the report adds. In conclusion the Jefferies report says “In a world of rising geo-political tensions, India has deftly managed to remain on good terms with the G7 while also being fully signed up member of BRICS, as reflected in the widely acknowledged success of the G20 Summit held in Delhi last September”. The situa- tion in the market is such that there are so many fluctuations in a single day that it becomes dif- ficult to predict what the future trend of the mar- ket will be. In such a situation, investors should be extremely cautious while making new investments and should also pay special attention to booking profits on their old in- vestments. There is no doubt that the Indian economy is on the path of improvement, there will be small and big obstacles in this path, but no one expects any serious decline. But de- spite this, the continuous selling by foreign institu- tional investors raises doubts about this. It could be asked that when the market is booming and the economy is on track, then why are for- eign investors continu- ously selling their goods despite the prospects of development. I had also mentioned in my previ- ous articles that as long as the earnings are re- flected only in the share prices, there will be no profit from it, the profit is only visible in the bank account. In such a situation, common investors should keep evaluating their investments con- tinuously and if there is a continuous falling trend in any stock, no matter what the reason, then that stock should be shown the way out of the portfo- lio as soon as possible. Pankaj Soni Jaipur shocking reve- lation has come to light regard- ing the functioning of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC), which has come into controversy due to paper leak cases. A government investi- gation has revealed that in the last one year, the RPSC Chairman took decisions at his level in 258 cases, including confidential matters, without calling a meet- ing of the Commission. In these cases, the Chair- man used special pow- ers and completed the formalities by taking comments from the members through circu- lation. Some members of the Commission were already under suspicion, but with this new revela- tion, the Chairman has also come into the dock. This picture of the functioning of the Com- mission came to light when the Personnel De- partment gathered com- plete information regard- ing the matter raised by MLA Hanuman Beniwal in the Assembly regard- ing the RPSC. An investigation re- vealed that no meeting of the full bench of the Commission was called from January 2023 last year to January 2024 this year. During this period, decisions on 258 mat- ters, including confiden- tial matters, were taken at the level of the Chair- man. Broadly speaking, during this entire year, all types of decisions were passed through cir- culation only. After the formation of the BJP government in the state, on January 23, 2024, fol- lowing the instructions of the Cabinet, a meeting of the Full Commission was held in which the date of the RAS exami- nation was postponed. In response to the Per- sonnel Department, the RPSC has stressed a ‘loophole’in the rules for not deciding the Full Commission meeting. Citing the rules, RPSC has said that given the workload, the meeting of the entire Commission is organised as per require- ment and if there is any necessary agenda, the meeting is organised im- mediately. In those cases that have to be disposed of quickly, the comments of all the members are taken through circula- tion. The big question that arises regarding this argument is whether all the 258 cases in the entire year were of the nature of quick disposal. When First India spoke to a former chairman of the RPSC on this matter, he said that in major cas- es, decisions are taken only by calling a meeting of the Commission. De- cisions are taken through circulation only in ex- tremely urgent situations. He also questioned that when the Chairman has to make all the decisions, then what is the need to have members in the Commission? For centuries, the concept of time travel has captivated people’s imagina- tions. Time travel is the con- cept of moving between differ- ent points in time, just like you move between different places. In movies, you might have seen characters using special machines, or magical devices or even hopping into a futuris- tic car to travel backwards or forward in time. But is this just a fun idea for movies, or could it happen? The question of whether time is reversible remains one of the biggest unresolved ques- tions in science. If the universe follows the laws of thermody- namics, it may not be possible. The second law of thermody- namics states that things in the universe can either remain the same or become more disor- dered over time. It’s a bit like saying you can’t unscramble eggs once they’ve been cooked. Accord- ing to this law, the universe can never go back exactly to how it was before. Time can only go forward, like a one-way street. TIME IS RELATIVE However, physicist Albert Einstein’s theory of special relativity suggests that time passes at different rates for dif- ferent people. Someone speed- ing along on a spaceship mov- ing close to the speed of light – 671 million miles per hour! – will experience time slow- er than a person on Earth. People have yet to build spaceships that can move at speeds anywhere near as fast as light, but astronauts who visit the Interna- tional Space Station orbit around the Earth at speeds close to 17,500 mph.Astronaut Scott Kel- ly has spent 520 days at the International Space Station, and as a result, has aged a little more slowly than his twin brother – and fellow astro- naut – Mark Kelly. Scott used to be 6 minutes younger than his twin brother. Now, because Scott was travelling so much faster than Mark and for so many days, he is 6 minutes and 5 milliseconds younger. Some scientists are exploring other ideas that could theoretically allow time travel. One concept in- volves wormholes, or hypo- thetical tunnels in space that could create shortcuts for journeys across the uni- verse. If someone could build a wormhole and then figure out a way to move one end at close to the speed of light – like the hy- pothetical spaceship men- tioned above – the mov- ing end would age more slowly than the sta- tionary end. Someone who entered the mov- ing end and exited the wormhole through the stationary end would come out in their past. However, wormholes remain theoretical Scien- tists have yet to spot one. It also looks like it would be in- credibly challenging to send humans through a worm- hole space tunnel. PARADOXES AND FAILED DINNER PARTIES There are also para- doxes associated with time travel. The fa- mous “grandfather par- adox” is a hypothetical problem that could arise if someone travelled back in time and accidentally pre- vented their grandparents from meeting. This would create a paradox where you were never born, which raises the question: How could you have travelled back in time in the first place? It’s a mind-boggling puzzle that adds to the mystery of time travel. Famously, physicist Ste- phen Hawking tested the pos- sibility of time travel by throwing a dinner party where invitations noting the date, time and coordinates were not sent out until after it had hap- pened. He hoped that his invi- tation would be read by some- one living in the future, who had the capabilities to travel back in time. But no one showed up. As he pointed out: “The best evidence we have that time travel is not possible, and nev- er will be, is that we have not been invaded by hordes of tourists from the future.” TELESCOPES ARE TIME MACHINES Interestingly, astrophysicists armed with powerful tele- scopes possess a unique form of time travel. As they peer into the vast expanse of the cosmos, they gaze into the past uni- verse. Light from all galaxies and stars takes time to travel, and these beams of light carry information from the distant past. When astrophysicists ob- serve a star or a galaxy through a telescope, they are not seeing it as it is in the present, but as it existed when the light began its journey to Earth millions to billions of years ago. NASA’s newest space tele- scope, the James Webb Space Telescope, is peering at galax- ies that were formed at the very beginning of the Big Bang, about 13.7 billion years ago. While we aren’t likely to have time machines like the ones in movies anytime soon, scientists are actively re- searching and exploring new ideas. But for now, we’ll have to enjoy the idea of time travel in our favourite books, movies and dreams.
