MITHALI RAJ CALLS
IT A DAY, LEAVES
WOMEN’S CRICKET
ON A HIGH NOTE
ce woman cricketer
Mithali Raj has been
a prominent name in
the cricketing world.
As a batswoman she
has several achievements to her
credit and has been admired for
her batting skills. Her calling it
a day from all forms of interna-
tional cricket will leave a void in
Indian women’s cricket al-
though the new crop of Team
India players have the potential
they will take time to attain that
level of maturity
.
India has had some great
women cricketers. Diana
Eduljee, who captained India in
1978 and holds the record for
bowling the most number of
balls---5098---in women’s test his-
tory and Neetu David, the slow
left-arm spinner who was the
first Indian bowler to take 100
wickets in women’s ODIs, to
name just two.
They were quality players but
what keeps Mithali apart is her
batting prowess and competitive
attitude on the field. She is the
only Indian batswoman to have
scored a double century
.

Minister Amit Shah batted for
HindiasanalternativetoEng-
lish in the country
. A debate
raged over the issue with
South Indian states aligned
against the suggestion to re-
place English with Hindi. It is
notthefirsttimethattheSouth
has taken a firm stand against
Hindi as a national language.
The first row started in Tamil
Nadu in 1937 when Hindi was
proposed to be introduced as a
compulsory subject.
It is the degeneration of the
discourse this time around
which is shocking and baf-
fling. Ruling DMK’s Rajya
SabhaMPTKSElangovansaid
thatHindiwasthelanguageof
Shudras.“Impositionof Hindi

said.Hethenwentontoblame
Hindi for the under-develop-
ment of northern states.
To identify a language with
a caste and economic develop-
ment is a case of extreme in-
sensitivity
. First, like the rest
of India Tamil Nadu’s society
is as caste-riven as any other
in the country
. Before the As-
sembly elections in 2021 AI-
ADMK-BJP and the DMK
depended on caste formulas
targeting the over 20 percent
Scheduled Castes.
Linking language to devel-
opment is an absolutely bi-
zarre logic. If Kerala, Tamil
Nadu, Karnataka have done
well it is not because of Eng-
lish but due to successive
governments which created
the right eco-system for pro-
gress. States in north India
became laggards because of
religion, crime and corrup-
tion, lack of proper infra-
structure and connectivity
.
DON’T BLAME HINDI
FOR POVERTY
It is the degeneration of the discourse this time around
which is shocking and baffling. Ruling DMK’s Rajya Sabha
MP TKS Elangovan said that Hindi was the language of
Shudras. “Imposition of Hindi will make us
Shudras,” he said. He then went on to blame Hindi for
the under-development of northern states

QUAD - CHINA
AND THE PACIFIC
On the other hand,
Politically and
diplomatically, we should
ensure continued
international pressure at
China’s sore thumb like
South China Sea, Taiwan
and Hong Kong. We need to
continue to isolate China on
its insidious role in starting
the current pandemic and
strengthen the Quad and
other multilateral regional
groupings of like-minded
countries. Well, if India
achieves all this, it will
dominate the Asian
continent and will emerge
as a world leader
he much-publicised recent
Tokyo summit 22 of QUAD
conference held in the back-
drop of Russia - Ukraine con-
flict is opening vistas of a
new world order aligning US,
India, Japan and Australia.
Conceptualised by Japan in
2007 It was revived in 2017
with first ministerial level
meeting at New York in 2019.
According to experts, the
main undeclared objective of
the formation of QUAD is to
rein in the increasing influ-
ence of China in the Indo-
Pacific region and to develop
a strategy to protect trade sea
routes free of any control
amid China’s growing mili-
tary existence in the strate-
gic Indo-Pacific region.
While the leaders of the
four member countries of
QUAD seemed pretty sure of
achieving their goal, China
almost mocked them and saw
no reason to worry. Chinese
leaders termed it as merely
“a headline-grabbing idea”.
Beijing believed that all the
four leaders were pursuing
strategies that were too di-
vergent to be coherent.
As a military analyst, I be-
lieve that Chinese leadership
perceived that while America
is pressing ‘The America is
back Policy’ under Joe Biden
for existing and future allies,
Australia and Japan are in-
terested only in keeping the
sea trade routes open without
third parties political and/or
Military interference. And,
Indian vision is to neutralize,
contain and counter Chinese
intrusions and dominance in
the sub-continent.
Before we dwell further, let
us have a look at this region.
Theregionconsistsof 14coun-
tries: Australia, Bangladesh,
Burma, India, Indonesia, Ja-
pan, Malaysia, New Zealand,
the Philippines, Singapore,
South Korea, Taiwan, Thai-
land and Vietnam. The region
has main sea trade routes and
therefore, an engine of the
global economy and that is
why the clash of TITANS.
China has been opposed to
QUAD Since its very incep-
tion and sees it as a strategy
to prevent its global rise and
interests. Often, China has
termed QUAD as Asian
NATO. And since the dilution
of NATO during Ukraine
war, China is seemingly clear
that QUAD will also disinte-
grate when tested under eco-
nomic and resources pres-
sures on member countries.
So, is it that QUAD is
shrouded in fears of an obso-
lete Cold War perceptions of
yester years and a military
confrontation in Ukraine of
current times? May be.
Since a joint statement by
QUAD countries about ‘spirit
of the QUAD’ is issued, Bei-
jing is advocating the need
for openness, inclusiveness
and a win-win situation in
the region and international
systems. It is further advis-
ing to refrain from forming
“cliques like NATO & QUAD.
Though, it refuses to accept
the same principles when it
comes to south China sea.
Therefore, to deal with the
challenges posed, China is
considering a double prong
pincer assault by forming an
institutionalize if not milita-
rize concept of a “Himalayan
Quad”—comprising China,
Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghan-
istan as a rival group, which
obviously will be no match to
QUAD but may suit the Chi-
nese design of rising to pow-
er with smaller groups,
neighbourhood politics, and
weaker countries that could
be a part and parcel of China
shaping a stronger world-
view across the region.
And secondly work on a
‘Debt Trap’ diplomacy on nu-
meroussmallislandcountries
in the Pacific region like Fiji,
Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu
and the Solomon. Xi knows
these nations are too poor to
service debt, yet he is ready to
lend the money to repeat a
Hambantota. Thereby

gicallysurroundingAustralia

routes of Japan & Australia

Pacific Island nations to ramp
up ties with the strategically
located island nations to fulfil
their aim of financially chok-
ing Australia and Japan with

India amidst these testing
times has a crucial role to
play. While on one hand it
needs to step up deterrence
in military terms by deploy-
ing additional army strength
with state-of-the-art weapon
systems to counter the drag-
on to work out “no war pact”
with China and a time-bound
solution of our border issues.

Jaipur: Giving condi-
tional anticipatory bail
to Rohit Joshi, son of
cabinet minister Ma-
hesh Joshi, in the rape
case, Delhi’s Tis Hazari
Court on Thursday ob-
served in the order that
the victim is an edu-
cated girl and it is clear
from the documents
that she knew from the
beginning that the ac-
cused was married.
Apart from this, she
himself had posted
videos and photos of
the accused and her-
self on his social media
accounts. Further, it is
also contradictory that
the accused must have
harassed the victim, as
he had filed for divorce
with the consent of
both of them to divorce
his wife and wanted to
marry the victim.
In the bail applica-
tion, the court was told
that the victim was
aware of the marriage
of the accused and had
herself sent a proposal
of friendship to the ap-
plicant on social media.
Apart from this, he had
made a relationship
with the applicant of
his own free will. She
dreamed of becoming
the wife of the appli-
cant and she started
demanding money
along with pressuriz-
ing the applicant to di-
vorce his wife. In such
a situation, he should
be given the benefit of
anticipatory bail.

First India Bureau
Lucknow: In the poli-
tics of India, any leader
is established as a lead-
er of a particular caste
only when he or she can
provide votes of his
caste to the candidate
of other caste instead
of himself or the candi-
date of his own caste.
Samajwadi Party Na-
tional President Akh-
ilesh Yadav contested
from Azamgarh seat in
the 2019 Lok Sabha elec-
tions.
He got more than 60
percent of the votes in
this Muslim and Yadav-
dominated seat. The
BJP had also fielded a
Yadav candidate, but it
got half of the votes
polled by Akhilesh.
Whatever votes the Ya-
davs had in Azamgarh,
almost one hundred
percent of the votes
went to Akhilesh. But
this does not establish
Akhilesh as the leader
of the Yadavs. It is not a
big deal for him or any
other Yadav candidate
of his party to get Yadav
votes.
The true test of his
‘political might’ will be
tested this time since he
has fielded a non-Yadav
candidate from Azam-
garh seat.
Akhilesh has given
ticket to Dalit leader Su-
shil Anand for the
Azamgarh seat that fell
vacant due to his resig-
nation. Sushil Anand is
the son of Balihari
Babu, a prominent Dalit
leader who was one of
the founders of BAM-
CEF.
Balihari Babu has
been in BSP for a long
time. Akhilesh has
played undertaken a
huge risk by giving tick-
et to his son. Keep in
mind that in the last as-
sembly elections, the
BSP had helped the BJP
by letting its core Dalit
vote go to the BJP. This
time Akhilesh has giv-
en ticket to a strong
Dalit leader who re-
mained in his party, to
counter the BJP’s strat-
egy. It will be interest-
ing to see whether the
Dalits of Azamgarh
vote for the candidate
of their own caste or do
they vote for the Mus-
lim candidate of BSP on
Mayawati’s appeal?
On the other hand,
BJP has once again
made Dinesh Lal Yadav
Nirhua, who contested
the elections last time,
as its candidate. He is a
big star of Bhojpuri
films. But could not
stand in front of Akh-
ilesh. So, this time Akh-
ilesh’s test is whether
he can prepare the Ya-
davs of Azamgarh to
vote for the Dalit candi-
date of SP over the Ya-
dav candidate of BJP.
On the other hand,
Mayawati’s test is
whether she is able to
prepare Dalits to vote
for the Muslim candi-
date of BSP over the
Dalit candidate of SP.
The outcome of this one
seat will decide a the po-
litical ‘swings’ in the
coming time.
Will Akhilesh and Mayawati prove their ‘salt’ in Azamgarh bypoll?

countries, West Bengal
Chief Minister Mamata
Banerjee on Thursday
condemned the hate
speech and demanded
the immediate arrests

HC issues notices to CBI, govt
& Subodh Jaiswal over petition
New Delhi: The Bom-
bay High Court on
Thursday issued notic-
es to the Central Bureau
of Investigation, the
Union government and
IPS officer Subodh Ku-
mar Jaiswal following a
plea challenging the lat-
ter’s appointment as the
CBI director.
A bench of Chief Jus-
tice Dipankar Datta and
Justice MS Karnik di-
rected the respondent
agencies and Jaiswal to
file their replies to the
plea by July 18.
The bench was hear-
ing a plea filed by Ra-
jendra Trivedi, former
ACP of the Maharash-
tra Police.
On Thursday, Trive-
di’s advocate SB Tale-
kar also submitted an
affidavit, stating that a
private complaint of
defamation was filed
against Jaiswal in 2012
and a magistrate’s court
in the city had taken its
cognisance and issued a
process against him.
The matter was pend-
ing hearing, Advocate
Talekar said.
The HC took the affi-
davit on record. It will
hear the matter further
on July 28.
Jaiswal, who had ear-
lier held the post of Ma-
harashtra’s Director
General of Police
(DGP), was appointed
as the CBI director in
May last year.
In his plea, filed
through Advocate Tale-
kar, Trivedi has sought
that Jaiswal’s appoint-
ment as the CBI direc-
tor be quashed.
Trivedi in his plea
claimed Jaiswal’s ap-
pointment was in con-
travention of the Delhi
Police Establishment
Act, and sought that the
high court call for the
records and proceed-
ings of the three-mem-
ber committee that had
approved Jaiswal’s can-
didature.

The earlier Iranian
statement claimed that

made the controversial
remarks against the
Prophet “would be

those who have been

did not get tickets but
they are not being dis-

As a batswoman she has several achievements to her credit and has been admired for her batting skills. Her calling it a day from all forms of interna- tional cricket will leave a void in Indian women’s cricket al- though the new crop of Team India players have the potential they will take time to attain that level of maturity . India has had some great women cricketers. Diana Eduljee, who captained India in 1978 and holds the record for bowling the most number of balls---5098---in women’s test his- tory and Neetu David, the slow left-arm spinner who was the first Indian bowler to take 100 wickets in women’s ODIs, to name just two. They were quality players but what keeps Mithali apart is her batting prowess and competitive attitude on the field. She is the only Indian batswoman to have scored a double century . A here is no limit to which linguistic chauvinists won’t stoop to. Hackles of politicalleaders and those from Kollywood, the South Indian film industry , wereraisedwhenUnionHome Minister Amit Shah batted for HindiasanalternativetoEng- lish in the country . A debate raged over the issue with South Indian states aligned against the suggestion to re- place English with Hindi. It is notthefirsttimethattheSouth has taken a firm stand against Hindi as a national language. The first row started in Tamil Nadu in 1937 when Hindi was proposed to be introduced as a compulsory subject. It is the degeneration of the discourse this time around which is shocking and baf- fling. Ruling DMK’s Rajya SabhaMPTKSElangovansaid thatHindiwasthelanguageof Shudras.“Impositionof Hindi will make us Shudras,” he said.Hethenwentontoblame Hindi for the under-develop- ment of northern states. To identify a language with a caste and economic develop- ment is a case of extreme in- sensitivity . First, like the rest of India Tamil Nadu’s society is as caste-riven as any other in the country . Before the As- sembly elections in 2021 AI- ADMK-BJP and the DMK depended on caste formulas targeting the over 20 percent Scheduled Castes. Linking language to devel- opment is an absolutely bi- zarre logic. If Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka have done well it is not because of Eng- lish but due to successive governments which created the right eco-system for pro- gress. States in north India became laggards because of religion, crime and corrup- tion, lack of proper infra- structure and connectivity . DON’T BLAME HINDI FOR POVERTY It is the degeneration of the discourse this time around which is shocking and baffling. Ruling DMK’s Rajya Sabha MP TKS Elangovan said that Hindi was the language of Shudras. “Imposition of Hindi will make us Shudras,” he said. He then went on to blame Hindi for the under-development of northern states T QUAD - CHINA AND THE PACIFIC On the other hand, Politically and diplomatically, we should ensure continued international pressure at China’s sore thumb like South China Sea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. We need to continue to isolate China on its insidious role in starting the current pandemic and strengthen the Quad and other multilateral regional groupings of like-minded countries. Well, if India achieves all this, it will dominate the Asian continent and will emerge as a world leader he much-publicised recent Tokyo summit 22 of QUAD conference held in the back- drop of Russia - Ukraine con- flict is opening vistas of a new world order aligning US, India, Japan and Australia. Conceptualised by Japan in 2007 It was revived in 2017 with first ministerial level meeting at New York in 2019. According to experts, the main undeclared objective of the formation of QUAD is to rein in the increasing influ- ence of China in the Indo- Pacific region and to develop a strategy to protect trade sea routes free of any control amid China’s growing mili- tary existence in the strate- gic Indo-Pacific region. While the leaders of the four member countries of QUAD seemed pretty sure of achieving their goal, China almost mocked them and saw no reason to worry. Chinese leaders termed it as merely “a headline-grabbing idea”. Beijing believed that all the four leaders were pursuing strategies that were too di- vergent to be coherent. As a military analyst, I be- lieve that Chinese leadership perceived that while America is pressing ‘The America is back Policy’ under Joe Biden for existing and future allies, Australia and Japan are in- terested only in keeping the sea trade routes open without third parties political and/or Military interference. And, Indian vision is to neutralize, contain and counter Chinese intrusions and dominance in the sub-continent. Before we dwell further, let us have a look at this region. Theregionconsistsof 14coun- tries: Australia, Bangladesh, Burma, India, Indonesia, Ja- pan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thai- land and Vietnam. The region has main sea trade routes and therefore, an engine of the global economy and that is why the clash of TITANS. China has been opposed to QUAD Since its very incep- tion and sees it as a strategy to prevent its global rise and interests. Often, China has termed QUAD as Asian NATO. And since the dilution of NATO during Ukraine war, China is seemingly clear that QUAD will also disinte- grate when tested under eco- nomic and resources pres- sures on member countries. So, is it that QUAD is shrouded in fears of an obso- lete Cold War perceptions of yester years and a military confrontation in Ukraine of current times? May be. Since a joint statement by QUAD countries about ‘spirit of the QUAD’ is issued, Bei- jing is advocating the need for openness, inclusiveness and a win-win situation in the region and international systems. It is further advis- ing to refrain from forming “cliques like NATO & QUAD. Though, it refuses to accept the same principles when it comes to south China sea. Therefore, to deal with the challenges posed, China is considering a double prong pincer assault by forming an institutionalize if not milita- rize concept of a “Himalayan Quad”—comprising China, Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghan- istan as a rival group, which obviously will be no match to QUAD but may suit the Chi- nese design of rising to pow- er with smaller groups, neighbourhood politics, and weaker countries that could be a part and parcel of China shaping a stronger world- view across the region. And secondly work on a ‘Debt Trap’ diplomacy on nu- meroussmallislandcountries in the Pacific region like Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Solomon. Xi knows these nations are too poor to service debt, yet he is ready to lend the money to repeat a Hambantota. Thereby , strate- gicallysurroundingAustralia and dominating the sea trade routes of Japan & Australia with rest of the world. While this article is being written,ChineseForeignMin- isterWangYiisvisitingSouth Pacific Island nations to ramp up ties with the strategically located island nations to fulfil their aim of financially chok- ing Australia and Japan with its clear fall out on American trade balance. India amidst these testing times has a crucial role to play. While on one hand it needs to step up deterrence in military terms by deploy- ing additional army strength with state-of-the-art weapon systems to counter the drag- on to work out “no war pact” with China and a time-bound solution of our border issues. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL T COL ANUPAM JAITLY (RETD) The writer is Defence expert, Motivational Speaker & Corporate Trainer According to experts, the main undeclared objective of the formation of QUAD is to rein in the increasing influence of China in the Indo- Pacific region and to develop a strategy to protect trade sea routes free of any control amid China’s growing military existence in the strategic Indo- Pacific region
  • 5. Kamal Kant Jaipur: Giving condi- tional anticipatory bail to Rohit Joshi, son of cabinet minister Ma- hesh Joshi, in the rape case, Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court on Thursday ob- served in the order that the victim is an edu- cated girl and it is clear from the documents that she knew from the beginning that the ac- cused was married. Apart from this, she himself had posted videos and photos of the accused and her- self on his social media accounts. Further, it is also contradictory that the accused must have harassed the victim, as he had filed for divorce with the consent of both of them to divorce his wife and wanted to marry the victim. In the bail applica- tion, the court was told that the victim was aware of the marriage of the accused and had herself sent a proposal of friendship to the ap- plicant on social media. Apart from this, he had made a relationship with the applicant of his own free will. She dreamed of becoming the wife of the appli- cant and she started demanding money along with pressuriz- ing the applicant to di- vorce his wife. In such a situation, he should be given the benefit of anticipatory bail. • 7. INDIA JAIPUR | FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 2022 06 www.firstindia.co.in I https://firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia First India Bureau Lucknow: In the poli- tics of India, any leader is established as a lead- er of a particular caste only when he or she can provide votes of his caste to the candidate of other caste instead of himself or the candi- date of his own caste. Samajwadi Party Na- tional President Akh- ilesh Yadav contested from Azamgarh seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elec- tions. He got more than 60 percent of the votes in this Muslim and Yadav- dominated seat. The BJP had also fielded a Yadav candidate, but it got half of the votes polled by Akhilesh. Whatever votes the Ya- davs had in Azamgarh, almost one hundred percent of the votes went to Akhilesh. But this does not establish Akhilesh as the leader of the Yadavs. It is not a big deal for him or any other Yadav candidate of his party to get Yadav votes. The true test of his ‘political might’ will be tested this time since he has fielded a non-Yadav candidate from Azam- garh seat. Akhilesh has given ticket to Dalit leader Su- shil Anand for the Azamgarh seat that fell vacant due to his resig- nation. Sushil Anand is the son of Balihari Babu, a prominent Dalit leader who was one of the founders of BAM- CEF. Balihari Babu has been in BSP for a long time. Akhilesh has played undertaken a huge risk by giving tick- et to his son. Keep in mind that in the last as- sembly elections, the BSP had helped the BJP by letting its core Dalit vote go to the BJP. This time Akhilesh has giv- en ticket to a strong Dalit leader who re- mained in his party, to counter the BJP’s strat- egy. It will be interest- ing to see whether the Dalits of Azamgarh vote for the candidate of their own caste or do they vote for the Mus- lim candidate of BSP on Mayawati’s appeal? On the other hand, BJP has once again made Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirhua, who contested the elections last time, as its candidate. He is a big star of Bhojpuri films. But could not stand in front of Akh- ilesh. So, this time Akh- ilesh’s test is whether he can prepare the Ya- davs of Azamgarh to vote for the Dalit candi- date of SP over the Ya- dav candidate of BJP.
