Diffusion And Osmosis Lab Report
Diffusion Osmosis
Kenneth Clark V18SU Intro to Biology (BIO 1210 VO02)

10 June 2018
Kenneth Clark
Introduction
This lab, title Diffusion and Osmosis, was centered on the diffusion across a cellular membrane,
exploring the concepts of diffusion and osmosis. First, testing the semipermeable nature of diffusion
bags with the use of starch and iodine. When the starch and iodine s interact, they cause a solution
change and the color then becomes black. In the event that the arrangement isn t dark, at that point
either starch or iodine have been kept from the membrane of the diffusion bag. Second, investigating
osmosis, likewise utilizing diffusion bags, with a few distinct concentrations of sucrose. Last, you will

In this lab they were observed to be the different parts of passive transport. They both go with the
concentration gradient from an area of high to low concentration. In the lab it was predicted that all
will be in a hypotonic environment because there may be a higher concentration of water outdoor the
cell. The water will diffuse in the cells, therefore the cells will increase in weight. For the second part
of the experiment. This experiment has to consider an inquiry. The cause became to identify
concentrations of sucrose solutions that this experiment gave. The procedure is to locate what answer
become closest to being isotonic and that allows us to perceive which ones were actually water. The
hypothesis for procedure 1, that all of the dialysis bags would be in a hypotonic environment was
correct. This occurred because the bags were placed in a beaker of water. This means that there was a
higher concentration of water than the solute, causing the water to diffuse in the cell after only
minutes. When water diffuses into the cell, this causes the cell to be enlarged. Some errors made in the
experiments would be failure to pay attention to the timing when the solutions were timed, inaccurate
measuring when gathering the solutions. This experiment tried to maintain equilibrium or homeostasis
by being in an isotonic environment, this experiment also used representations and models to

Chemistry Involved in Electric Vehicles
What is the chemistry involved in electric vehicles?
Electrical cars have been around since the 1800s.The first practical electric car was designed by
Thomas Parker in London. The vehicles popularity continued into the 20th century, until the
technology of combustible engines advanced and the mass production of gas vehicles. In 2008 the
electric car appeared once again because the advances in the battery and power technology, upward
prices of oil and emissions. The electrical car originally used a lead acid based battery, today however
the lithium ion rechargeable battery is used. The battery of the electric car stores chemical energy and
converts the energy to electricity. The chemistry of the electric car is found mainly in the battery. In
the battery there is a chemical reaction in cells which then produces a voltage. These batteries usually
have 200 to 400 small cells. The cells are combined to create a powerful battery. The risk is that if one
cell overcharge it causes a thermal reaction. The development electronic controls for this risk are in
process but are expensive. Khalil Amine and Zonghai Chen of the Argonne National Laboratory
discovered a molecule base of boron and fluorine added to each cell controls the charging of the
battery cells. The molecule is said to be less costly and more reliable than the electric control.
(MANDEL, 2009) In the 1800s the lead acid based battery was invented and used in electrical cars.
The technologies of the lead acid battery

The Issue Of Humanitarian Intervention
The current consensus in the international community understands that nations, like individuals, have
basic rights, namely, the right to territorial integrity and political sovereignty. When another nation
violates these rights, it is considered an act of aggression. However, there certainly are situations
where a violation of territorieal integrity or political sovereignty is justified, namely humanitarian
intervention, thus use of military force against another state when the chief publicly declared aim of
that military action is ending human rights violations being perpetrated by the state against which it is
directed. The issue of humanitarian intervention has been at the forefront of international relations
discourse, particularly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In On Liberty, John Stuart Mill argues that the only legitimate basis for limiting the individual s
liberty, in the liberal democratic state, is to prevent harm to others. In his words, The only purpose for
which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will,
is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant. This is
now considered the Harm Principle. The Legalist Paradigm seeks to extend this liberty to the states
themselves as well. It is a modern, secular and legalistic interpretation of Classical Just War Theory,
which reflects conventions of law and order based upon the analogy of states to individuals. It took
root in the writings of the Catholic theologian Francisco de Vitoria and the Dutch jurist, Hugo Grotius
and also from the Treaty of Westphalia at the end of the Thirty Years War in the 17th Century, which
led to the formal and legal recognition of independent, sovereign nation states and their rights to
territorial integrity and political sovereignty. The Legalist Paradigm consists of six claims. The first
two claims outline the existence of an international society of independent nation states that have
agreed upon the rights of its members to territorial integrity and political sovereignty. Thus, the third
claims defines aggression as the use of force to threaten the rights of another state.

The Endoplasmic Reticulum
1. Introduction
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is the central intracellular organelle providing stringent quality
control systems to protein synthesis. Upon accumulation of misfolded/ unfolded proteins in the ER,
eukaryotic cells have developed an evolutionarily conserved adaptive mechanism, unfolded protein
response (UPR), to clear these proteins and restore ER homeostasis. The ability to respond to
perturbations in ER function is critical for cell survival but chronic or amplified ER stress can lead to
apoptosis to protect the organism by removing the stressed cells. Growing evidence suggests that ER
stress mediated apoptosis may contribute to pathophysiological processes involved in a number of
diseases such as neurodegenerative disease, diabetes, atherosclerosis and renal disease [1]. This term
paper intends to address (i) ER stress mediated signaling, (ii) molecular mechanisms linking ER stress
to apoptosis and (iii) a potential role of ER stress in autoimmunity in the context of type I diabetes.
2. The Endoplasmic Reticulum
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an essential organelle that is a major place for the biogenesis of
cellular components including proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates and internal calcium storage. ER is
primarily responsible for protein translocation, protein folding and protein post modification. Proper
folding of protein in the ER is accomplished with the aid of ER resident proteins or enzymes such as
chaperones. Binding of chaperones to

Eastern Woodland Indians Civilization
Europeans often thought Native Americans on one hand vicious cannibals, with no social
organization, but on another hand pictured Indian society as being orderly, advanced, and civilized.
There are three famous sixteenth century pictures. Showing that Indians were civilized people. Life
among the Eastern Woodland economy looks in the first painting very civilized. The Eastern
Woodlands economy seems stable for the men making canoes. Their religion looks to be a dance ritual
for their gods. As their diet seems to be made up of vegetables that they have grown, fish that they
caught, and meat they have caught. The Eastern Woodland Indians wore cloth from animals they
skinned, and wore as a skirt. Their values look to be protecting their village

Chloramphenicol And Protein Synthesis Lab Report
Introduction
In this practical, we will investigate and compare the mechanisms of action of the drugs:
Chloramphenicol and Rifampicin, specifically by identifying whether their effects are bacteriostatic or
bactericidal, and by looking at their effect on RNA and protein synthesis
Antibiotics can be divided into two categories: Bactericidal or Bacteriostatic. Bactericidal antibiotics
directly kill the micro organisms, and depending on the amount given, the bacteria will not recover
after administration of the antibiotic is ceased. Bacteriostatic antibiotics prevent growth of the
bacteria, by targeting proteins that are involved in reproduction. Once the bacteriostatic antibiotic is
removed, population numbers usually increase again.
One of the drugs we will be investigating is Chloramphenicol. Chloramphenicol is a member of the
Amphenicol family/class of antibiotics. It is effective against gram negative and gram positive
bacteria. Members of the family work by targeting protein synthesis. Due to its ability to work against
gram negative and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rifampicin specifically binds to and inhibits RNA polymerase in prokaryotic organisms. It is a potent
agent used to treat tuberculosis. It targets the majority of gram positive bacteria and a considerable
number of gram negative bacteria. It is able to kill intracellular microorganisms as it can enter
phagocytes. Drug resistance can arise quickly and easily, and is believed to occur due to a
chromosomal mutation, which results in a change in the DNA dependent RNA polymerase.
Rifampicin is orally administrated, and has no common unwanted side effects. Side effects can
include: skin rashes, fever and gastrointestinal disturbances. Liver damage has been observed in rare
cases. Rifampicin also induces metabolising enzymes in the liver, and therefore drugs such as warfarin
may be quicker metabolised. (Dale and Rang,

Hitler s rise to power came on January 20, 1933 when he was announced chancellor of Germany and
then anointing himself Fuhrer. Hitler strongly believed that the Jews were responsible for Germany s
defeat in 1918, even writing in a memoir that a European war would cause the extermination of the
Jewish race in Germany (History.com). Hitler was also obsessed with the Aryan race, which he
believed was pure . These two ideas would become the main cause for this genocide. The first ever
concentration camp, Dachau, opened March 1933 and at first only imprisoned political enemies to the
Nazi party. Over the next few years the Jews would be persecuted and forced out of work by the Nazi
party. Then in November of 1938 things escalated in what is known as the night of broken glass ,
where German synagogues were burned down and Jewish owned shops were destroyed (History).
Causing the death of hundreds Jews and the arrest of thousands. In the start of the war, September
1939, the Germans have just started to occupy Poland. During this time the Germans were seizing
Jewish owed land and business and had tens of thousands of Jews taken out of their homes and moved
into ghettos. Starting in 1941 the Germans began moving the people in the ghettos into concentration
camps and on March 17 1942 the first mass gassing happened at the camp of Belzec. Shortly after this
five more camps were built in Poland the most notorious being Auschwitz (History.com). This camp
by the end of the war will have killed more than 2 million people, and in total the holocaust had killed
roughly 6 million Jews, 3 million soviet prisoners of war, 2 million soviet civilians, 1 million polish

Influence Of Political Parties In The United States
Influence of Political Parties The American government runs on the party system. To be specific, it s
divided between Democrats and Republicans. A large part of the public also associates themselves as
Individuals because they feel that neither one of the parties represents their beliefs properly. Both
parties have very opposite beliefs from each other. The Republican party mainly consists of
conservatives and believes that the government should not be too involved in the economy because a
large government poses a threat to citizen s freedom. The Democratic party, on the other hand,
believes that government intervention in the economy is needed. Democrats are mainly Liberals and
they represent minorities, women, and the poor. They also support ... Show more content on

For the most part, America employs single member districts which means that the electorate only
chooses one representative from each district. During presidential elections, every state is given votes
through the electoral college which equals to the amount of U.S. senators and House members. Single
member districts tend to weaken third parties. In 1992, an Individual named Ross Perot ran for the
presidential election and although he gained 19% of the popular votes, he didn t receive any electoral
votes. This happened because the Electoral College leverages the two party system. To decrease the
amount of influence political parties have on the government, other governments like Sweden elect
legislators in multimember districts instead of single member districts, and the number of seats that a
party wins is proportional to the amount of its support among voters. For example, In Sweden 310
seats are allocated in 29 constituencies. This helps everyone s opinions and voices to be

The History Of Xavier University
Bishop Edward Fenwick of Cincinnati, founded the Athenaeum, a college dedicated to religion and
liberal arts, on October 17, 1831. It was the first Catholic institution of higher learning in Ohio and in
the Northwest Territory and the sixth oldest Catholic university in the nation. In 1840 the Jesuits took
control of the Athenaeum, renaming it St. Xavier College in honor of the founder of the Society of
Jesus. The college received its charter status from the state of Ohio in 1842. In 1912 the Xavier

The moral aspect of this story is that of the shepherd woman who selflessly took up the fate of another
individual as her personal responsibility. She realized that she had to help this stranger because she
had the ability to do so. The woman refused to leave a stranger (Jai) until his journey was secured and
then she refused Jai s offer of payment for her kindness and generosity. This deed was done based on
her obvious personal ethical values which proved to be moral.
The stakeholders are anyone who was affected by the decisions that were made, in this case Jai and his
companion were the extreme stake holders and consequently it trickled down to a shepherd woman
and eventually several others. Jai was affected most since all the decisions made affected him directly
throughout the story. The shepherd woman, the village officials, and the physician were also affected
and therefore can be considered stakeholders. The assumptions of Jai and his companion were that
since they were both healthy and experienced at climbing despite their youth, when the 1 p.m. turn
around time came, the decision to press on had been easy to make, which was to continue on since the
prospects of doing it another day held little appeal to both men. Their assumptions did affect the

How Did Tally Change In Uglies By Scott Westerfeld
Imagine living in a world where at the age of sixteen kids turn pretty and their life becomes perfect.
Everything in life becomes easy and carefree, sleep all day and party all night. That was the life Tally

In the end, it turned into something Tally could have never imagined. Tally s personality had changed
without the operation. In Scott Westerfeld s book Uglies, Tally learns even the simple things in life can
end up being complex.
If Tally would have had the operation, her personality would have changed forever. In the book,
Maddy and Az are the ones who told Tally the government was putting brain lesions into new pretties
brains to change their opinions. Tally s opinions would have changed without her knowledge. Once
Tally knew she had been lied to her whole life, she never wanted to go back to the city. This shows
that Tally had learned a valuable life lesson, life is about more than just having a pretty face. Tally

Key Problems Associated With Titanium Machining And The...
Ezugwu and Wang (1997) presented a review on the main problems associated with titanium
machining, including tool wear and the mechanism responsible for tool failure. They suggest that
uncoated carbides (WC/Co) cutting tools are better than most coated cutting tools for machining a
titanium alloy. The high chemical reactivity of titanium causes welding of work piece material on the
cutting tool during machining, leading to chipping and premature tool failure. The prominent failure
modes in titanium machining were: notching, flank wear, crater wear, chipping, and catastrophic
failure. Different tool materials have different response to different wear mechanism. Crater wear is
closely related to the chemical composition of the cutting tool. The conclusions presented by this
researcher, they suggest that dissolution diffusion wear dominates on the rake and flank face for
uncoated cemented carbides used for the turning of titanium alloys. At very high cutting speeds and
temperatures, the conclusion is that plastic deformation and development of cracks due to thermal
shock will be the dominating wear mechanisms. Change of feed rate, depth of cut or cutting speed
give changes in the wear rates. They also suggest that cutting fluids have to be used during titanium
machining to minimize high stresses and temperatures. The cutting fluid has to work both as coolant
and lubricating agent to lower the cutting forces and avoid chip welding, which is a phenomenon often
experienced during

Bedouins In The Arabian Peninsula
Between 200 to 800 CE, the Arabian Peninsula went through drastic changes over time in a time
period of 6 centuries. People from the Arabian Peninsula started to convert to Islam from Animist
Polytheist. The main focus of these 2 time periods were based heavily on religion and the status of
women increasing then suddenly deteriorating following Prophet Muhammad s death in 632.
In 200 CE, The majority of the Arabian Peninsula was Animist Polytheist, people who believed in
nature spirits. The social structure of the Bedouins in the Arabian peninsula were tribal clans. Their
structure is based upon a kinship and the leader of family is part of a bigger social structure consisting
of councils and elders. Women also had a high status in comparison to the other empires, as their
advice was also considered valuable. Many of the Bedouins who lived in Arabian Peninsula carved
and worshipped idols whom they believed to be intermediary to the almighty Gods. Arab polytheism,
the dominant form in pre Islamic Arabia was based on veneration of deities and other rituals. The

Importance Of Preferential Trade Agreement
Internal Memorandum 2
Countries are increasingly using preferential trade arrangements in order to liberalize trade. There are
specific terms used in this context as such. When talking about a PTA, it should be first made clear
that this is an exception the core WTO principle of MFN. Some countries are treated better than others
for the purposes of such agreements, as opposed to the MFN status of the WTO, where everybody is
treated the same. There are going to be increasing levels of integration associated with PTAs.
The first one, according to relevant literature is the so called free trade agreement, FTA. Under this

The first two ways of integration deal with movements of goods and services across borders and WTO
commitments. So, to be clear, it is only the FTAs and Customs Unions towards which WTO rules are
addressed. The WTO has certain commitments that members agree to, surrounding these preferential
trade agreements. On an FTA, where the FTA and customs union are treated under art. XXIV of the
GATT, the commitments under the agreements are required that the restrictions on non members
cannot be increased. You can eliminate the barriers among your buddies, but you cannot increase the
tariffs on non members. With the customs union, since there will be a common policy towards non
members, there could be some instances where some good s tariffs go up for a particular member and
down for another. So, it is looking at policies as a whole. There will be a requirement for
compensation as such.
The other expectation is that the restrictions both under the FTA or customs union need to be removed
by members on substantially all trade and within a reasonable amount of time. So, the idea is that an
FTA or customs union will not be only for the auto industry or only for the agricultural industry, it
should be for trade, as a whole. Some agreements in practice do not meet this criteria and it is possible
that a member could bring a dispute settlement case against two other WTO members, who are not

Bipolar Reflection
Over a year ago, I was diagnosed with a mental illness called bipolar disorder. It wasn t as much as a
shock when they explained it to me, for I always had that slight suspicion that I might be bipolar.
Although the condition has always been there with me, the symptoms were more apparent to me after
that day. This condition has made it really hard for me to function in school and at home. For a while
now, I ve let it completely take me over because I didn t want to bother fighting something that felt
stronger than me. I don t think people truly understand how this affects me. Especially my parents,
they d refuse to accept that I have bipolar disorder. Trust me, I wouldn t want it either but it isn t
something I can ignore. For years, I ve made various attempts at guiding my parent s attention to this.
What finally made them realize how serious this was to me was my art. Art has helped me through a
lot ever since I started getting depressed, so I see it fit to make my concept based on I feel. The picture
will be one I ve taken for a different assignment similar to this one. It will be split into three different
sections, each section belonging to each individual in the photograph. Once they re all finished, the
pieces will be placed next to each other and will be connected by string. It will be based on ... Show

For me, manic depressive disorder isn t just black and white but a whole monochromatic scale,
ranging from the deepest oxford blue, to the purest white. I chose blue to describe the depressive stage
because of the mood it gives off. The hue blue will give off a cimmerian mood, which would be
perfect in capturing the mood when one is depressed. White would give off a sense of purity and
happiness. Although yellow might be the ideal color of happiness, I feel as if white better displays
what I feel. The middle of the picture will be neutral colors to express the lack of color I feel when I m

The Wife of Bath s Reflexive Contradiction for Sexual...
The Wife of Bath s Reflexive Contradiction for Sexual Equality in the Canterbury Tales The Wife of
Bath has been described and depicted as an independent proto feminist who long ago led the charge
for sexual equality. Chaucer s visionary protagonist was a refreshing and modern look at women s
rights in the fifteenth century. She spends much of her prologue breaking down stereotypical barriers
that have confined women of her time to passive and subservient roles in her society. As a result, her
prologue, if standing alone, can be noted as one of the great calls for female independence in historical
literature. But upon viewing her works as a whole, her section of the General Prologue, her prologue
and her tale, it is well noted that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

honor, the knight s sharp words are an attempt to break out of his bond. I only emphasize them to
express the sheer lack of respect and appreciativeness he has for his savior. After she humbly replies
that all she wants is his love above all the wealth in the world, he starkly fires back in shock, My love .
. . Nay my dampnacioun! (1073). He continues to spout off lines of rejection; digging himself into a
deeper hole with the woman he has already sworn indirectly to marry. The story continues with a
description of the sadness around the day of the marriage, all the while opposing the Wife s former
views that a women s value lies less in her appearance and more in her performance in bed, that
beauty is hardly an important factor in determining a woman s value. Yet, the knight strongly rejects
her merely on her lack of beauty. Whether the hag is simply desperate or confused is undetermined,
but she gives in to the knight s lack of supposedly ingrained chivalry by letting him off with a light
lecture on true nobility. Her quaint address is surmised by the simple statement, I shal fufille youre

Animal Forms Of Communication As Less Complex Or...
As humans, we find it easy to conclude that we are the smartest, most superior beings on the planet.
What is it that makes us so certain that this is true? Animals do not speak our language, so we make
the judgment that they are less. If we look beyond our own form of verbal communication, we may
find that the domesticated animals we keep as pets are trying to communicate with us sometimes,
especially dogs. Do they not greet us at the door, running with a wagging tail? Do they not try to warn
and ward off potential intruders? Do they not want to eat whatever it is that a person is eating, even if
that means licking crumbs off the plate just before it goes in the dish washer? Cats communicate
through habits of their own they purr and hiss. Why do we evaluate animal forms of communication
as less complex or intelligent than our own? Though we often see non human animals as inferior,
viewing their intelligence as fundamentally different from our own, imagining them as incapable of
communicating in a way similar to humans, and focusing on differences in physical form and societal
structure, humans and other animals are far more similar than we might think. Particular similarities
exist between humans and primates. In the book Evolution and Human Behavior: Darwinian
Perspectives on Human Nature, John Cartwright writes, In terms of the amino acid sequences in a
range of blood proteins, and hence the genes responsible, we are virtually identical to chimpanzees
(162 4).

Honour And Disgrace Quotes
Honour and disgrace Honour, virginity and disgrace are other issues referred to in the novel. All are
interrelated in the Arab society. In such a society, the honour of the male members of a family depends
mainly on how their female relatives are looked upon. Their women should prove to be virgin on their
wedding night, and their relations after marriage must be restricted to their husbands only. In this
regard, El Saadawi explains that: [a woman] remains a woman whether poor or rich, ignorant or
cultured. Throughout, she is fundamentally the same since her honour does not go further than an
intact hymen and a chaste sexual life. In most cases, her downfall and loss of her honour are brought
about by poverty. This is perhaps a step forward ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Evaluation Of Language Transcripts From Salt ] Software...
A language sample was elicited during the last hour of the evaluation. The sample was transcribed and
evaluated using the Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts [SALT] software for quantitative and
qualitative analysis.
Andrea enthusiastically participated with the examiner during the language sample. She initiated the
conversation by choosing to explain how to play the game Googly Eyes rather than utilize any of the
activities provided by the examiner. Andrea s explanation of the game was mostly chronological, she
occasionally forgot a part of the game, but always corrected herself for any confusion. Her speech was
fluent, though used the word like frequently. The slight overuse of the word could be attributed to her
age, rather than a reflection of her lexical diversity. Her descriptions of the game were spontaneous,
mostly fluid, and she was 100% intelligible. These observations suggest this sample was a valid
representation of Andrea s language abilities as the game required several complex explanations in
which she performed well.
Throughout the conversation, Andrea displayed a mastery of complex syntactic and morphological
form (mean length of utterance= 7.87) which is expected for her age. Of the 57 utterances examined,
Andrea only abandoned 10 utterances (accounting for only 17% of the sample), usually in favor of of
a clearer explanation of sequence of events or choice of words. Her mastery of semantics was not

Junk Food Vs Fast Food
For decades in the United States, big meat companies, fast food chains, and all types of media has
brainwashed Americans to believe that meat heavy diets are the healthy options for humans. Not only
have thousands studies proved this idea false, but they affect so many other factors such as the
environment, undocumented workers, and most importantly our health. In the last few years, more and
more people have shifted to a vegan or a plant based diet, and those who tell their stories talk about
how much of a positive impact it makes on their day to day life, and their overall health. Trying to
convince the majority of the United States to switch to not eating meat is not capable at this time, but
one person at a time is a good start.
Humans have been eating animals their entire life without considering they don t need it, or that it is
harmful to their bodies. .There are four carcinogenic classification groups. All processed meats, which
is most, is a group 1 carcinogen. A carcinogen is a substance that promotes the formation of any type
of cancer. Animal products, including dairy and eggs, contain cholesterol and saturated fats which
contribute to heart disease, diabetes, cancers and many more life taking diseases. 45 million people get
food poisoning every year. Fish being the number one cause of poisoning and diseases. Farmed fish
are kept together in small areas, and if one fish has a disease, the feces will spread throughout all of

George Moore s Film Roger And Me Essay
There is a spectrum to how a country s economic system is run, and on one end is capitalism and on
the other is socialism. Both are equally good and equally bad, and therefore moderation is the perfect
combination of the two. As of today, America stands too close to the capitalist end of the spectrum,
and thus there are many economic inequalities, in that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and
pull the less poor down with them. In the example of Flint, Michigan in Michael Moore s film Roger
and Me, when the many workers laid off when the GM factory relocated suddenly became
unemployed. Another example of capitalism gone too far is in Mark Dowie s article Pinto Madness,
when Ford s lobbyists made it virtually impossible for lawmakers to make safety regulations on cars.
Thus, with more socialism, so that the two are in moderation, there is a chance that all Americans can
be truly happy. Capitalism and socialism are two extremes of a spectrum on which all countries fall;
there are good and bad parts to both, and therefore a balance must be struck, as proved by extreme
examples of capitalism in Pinto Madness and Roger and Me.
While every country falls along a spectrum between capitalism and socialism, America falls close to
the capitalist end. This is because in America, most property is privately owned, and Americans value
pursuit of personal profit and competition and consumer choice (Macionis 2016: 197). Of course,
while there are publically owned things

Essay On African American Participation
The Annual Black Caucus is a yearly event that takes place in the Nation s capital of Washington, DC
every September. At the conference, various leaders, policy makers, and educators respectfully come
together to discuss issues that face many African American communities. Most importantly,
meaningful discussions on solutions to resolve these issues are debated. The Annual Black Caucus
provides a platform to inform, inspire, and motivate future African American youth progressing into
the 21st century and beyond. I am on a quest to change some of the widespread problems that plague
many African American communities . Upon being inspired after reading Carter G. Woodson s, the

What´s Sovereignty Essays
Sovereignty
(1) Sovereignty means supreme and independent power or authority in government as possessed or
claimed by a state or community. (Dictonary.com)
First of all, Sovereignty is vital for any country to survive. Singapore s sovereignty is anchored by a
cohesive society, economic development and our military vitality. In addition, Singapore has always
placed a prime on its security and its security policy is built on the twin pillars of deterrence and
diplomacy , a rational affair that its leaders proponent. (Eugene Lim, 2013, para. 3).

group called the Jemmaah Islamiyah (JI) which was a Southeast Asian militant terrorist organization.
This incident brought a nation wide terror to the people in Singapore because Singapore is so safe
whereby this kind of situation rarely exists as the police are competent. Due to the poor security of the
government handling the situation, he escaped from detention which makes people curious as he had
to walk with a limp causing difficulty in walking. Moreover, he had plans of bombing Singapore
through a few ways such as hijacking a plane from Bangkok and crashing into Changi Airport. The
issue was resolved when Malaysian police caught him in Malaysia and he was later brought back to
Singapore to be held accountable for this incident. To deal with terrorism effectively, the government
has ratified an integrated approach to its national security program, structured around the Prevention,
Protection and Response realm. (Mohamed Bin Ali, 2014, p.4)

A Poison Tree Analysis
Mistakes: An action that is misguided or wrong. Mistakes are made in everyday life. Mistakes can be
anything from keeping in emotions, to how someone handled a situation. Mistakes aren t made unless
someone does something wrong. This idea can be seen in many pieces of texts including the following
poems. A Poison Tree by William Blake and A total stranger one black day by e.e. cummings both
convey the message that people need to learn to deal with their emotions, otherwise it can lead to
mistakes.
Through A Poison Tree, William Blake conveys that handling emotions inappropriately leads to
mistakes. The use of an extended metaphor expresses this theme because William Blake compares
hatred to a tree. As the poem continues, so does the growth of the tree, and hatred the subject is
feeling. The speaker states, I told it not, my wrath did grow./And it grew both day and night (Blake 4
and 9). In this quote, the speaker expresses that he hasn t told the person who he hates, his feelings,
and they continue to grow. His hatred grows more and more as time passes, just like a tree grows and
grows. This compares to a tree because trees start off as a small seed and they continue to grow into a
large tree. The extended metaphor expresses the theme because the speaker doesn t know how to
handle his emotions, and let s them keep building up which leads to a major mistake in his future.
Another device William Blake uses is an allusion because he is alluding to the garden of Eden and

Patriotism in Spiderman Movies
The portrayal of the feelings of the general public is constantly used in film to stir the audience. If the
filmmaker can rouse their feelings, people will be more engrossed in the movie than they would be
otherwise. What is arguably the strongest emotion in many people is the feeling of patriotism. As
George Bernard Shaw said, Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other
countries because you were born in it. Though this feeling is not necessarily based on logic, it is none
the less one of the most powerful feelings along with hatred and love. Depending on when a movie is
made, the amount of patriotism portrayed is directly related to the political and social climate on the
time. Specifically, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This movie doesn t jolt the viewer into having a greater feeling of patriotism afterwards, but it does
reaffirm their support for the troops and however much patriotism they felt beforehand. Though
Spider Man (2002) and Spider Man 2 (2004) are very close together in terms of time and plotline, the
way they use the superhero to bring out the movie goers feeling of patriotism is very different. The
first is almost completely blind in the amount of patriotism it fed its audience. With the unwavering
support for the government the American public felt at the time, the movie not only portrayed the
country s patriotic feelings, but actually caused a temporary increase in the amount of patriotism felt
by most movie goers. This patriotism is very simple, but can have a great impact when used at the
right times. The second Spider Man movie had just as much patriotism as the first, but it was used in a
much more subtle way. Spiderman was no longer the faceless leader of the people against evil, but he
was a representative of the American troops and how human they really are. Spiderman was no longer
invincible in this movie, and although he won in the end, he took a lot more damage than he did in the
first movie. Just as real men and women died overseas, Spiderman was injured badly and only
survived by his strong will and the undying support of the citizens of New York. Together, Spider Man
(2002) and Spider Man 2

A Summary Of Music Affecting The Music Industry
The music industry has been greatly affected by the rising interest in the internet. People can instantly
listen to songs by a single search, even entire albums. Digital downloading has allowed people to have
constant access to any and all music. Deciding whether it is affecting the music industry positively or
negatively is its own question, but there is absolutely no question that the entire industry is affected.
Most music is available to listen to without necessarily requiring payment. Through websites like
YouTube and SoundCloud, a fairly large amount of music is accessible. Alternatively, some people
simply download the music from different sources. There has been some complaint that downloading
the music from such sources is considered copyright piracy, but not much is done to combat the
illegality of pirating music. Combined with the fact the any given person s music taste can change in
weeks, buying every song that they enjoy listening to can get extremely expensive. The executive vice
president of the Warner Brothers Group, Paul Vidich said, It is a challenge that we have got to ... Show

in a capitalistic society companies must take all money obtainable. Vidich stated that there are things
that will happen that will begin to change the way we do business. Many people are also aware that
small bands rely on the profit of people buying their songs, thus, people will buy songs from those that
need the money to continue making music. They also know that the bigger, more popular bands can
survive without that profit, using the money gained from touring and selling band

The main definition of Karma for the Hinduism is consequences of actions. The way it is said is your

  • 2. Diffusion And Osmosis Lab Report Diffusion Osmosis Kenneth Clark V18SU Intro to Biology (BIO 1210 VO02) Martha R Rainville 10 June 2018 Kenneth Clark Introduction This lab, title Diffusion and Osmosis, was centered on the diffusion across a cellular membrane, exploring the concepts of diffusion and osmosis. First, testing the semipermeable nature of diffusion bags with the use of starch and iodine. When the starch and iodine s interact, they cause a solution change and the color then becomes black. In the event that the arrangement isn t dark, at that point either starch or iodine have been kept from the membrane of the diffusion bag. Second, investigating osmosis, likewise utilizing diffusion bags, with a few distinct concentrations of sucrose. Last, you will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this lab they were observed to be the different parts of passive transport. They both go with the concentration gradient from an area of high to low concentration. In the lab it was predicted that all will be in a hypotonic environment because there may be a higher concentration of water outdoor the cell. The water will diffuse in the cells, therefore the cells will increase in weight. For the second part of the experiment. This experiment has to consider an inquiry. The cause became to identify concentrations of sucrose solutions that this experiment gave. The procedure is to locate what answer become closest to being isotonic and that allows us to perceive which ones were actually water. The hypothesis for procedure 1, that all of the dialysis bags would be in a hypotonic environment was correct. This occurred because the bags were placed in a beaker of water. This means that there was a higher concentration of water than the solute, causing the water to diffuse in the cell after only minutes. When water diffuses into the cell, this causes the cell to be enlarged. Some errors made in the experiments would be failure to pay attention to the timing when the solutions were timed, inaccurate measuring when gathering the solutions. This experiment tried to maintain equilibrium or homeostasis by being in an isotonic environment, this experiment also used representations and models to communicate ... • 3. Chemistry Involved in Electric Vehicles What is the chemistry involved in electric vehicles? Electrical cars have been around since the 1800s.The first practical electric car was designed by Thomas Parker in London. The vehicles popularity continued into the 20th century, until the technology of combustible engines advanced and the mass production of gas vehicles. In 2008 the electric car appeared once again because the advances in the battery and power technology, upward prices of oil and emissions. The electrical car originally used a lead acid based battery, today however the lithium ion rechargeable battery is used. The battery of the electric car stores chemical energy and converts the energy to electricity. The chemistry of the electric car is found mainly in the battery. In the battery there is a chemical reaction in cells which then produces a voltage. These batteries usually have 200 to 400 small cells. The cells are combined to create a powerful battery. The risk is that if one cell overcharge it causes a thermal reaction. The development electronic controls for this risk are in process but are expensive. Khalil Amine and Zonghai Chen of the Argonne National Laboratory discovered a molecule base of boron and fluorine added to each cell controls the charging of the battery cells. The molecule is said to be less costly and more reliable than the electric control. (MANDEL, 2009) In the 1800s the lead acid based battery was invented and used in electrical cars. • 4. The Issue Of Humanitarian Intervention The current consensus in the international community understands that nations, like individuals, have basic rights, namely, the right to territorial integrity and political sovereignty. When another nation violates these rights, it is considered an act of aggression. However, there certainly are situations where a violation of territorieal integrity or political sovereignty is justified, namely humanitarian intervention, thus use of military force against another state when the chief publicly declared aim of that military action is ending human rights violations being perpetrated by the state against which it is directed. The issue of humanitarian intervention has been at the forefront of international relations discourse, particularly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In On Liberty, John Stuart Mill argues that the only legitimate basis for limiting the individual s liberty, in the liberal democratic state, is to prevent harm to others. In his words, The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant. This is now considered the Harm Principle. The Legalist Paradigm seeks to extend this liberty to the states themselves as well. It is a modern, secular and legalistic interpretation of Classical Just War Theory, which reflects conventions of law and order based upon the analogy of states to individuals. It took root in the writings of the Catholic theologian Francisco de Vitoria and the Dutch jurist, Hugo Grotius and also from the Treaty of Westphalia at the end of the Thirty Years War in the 17th Century, which led to the formal and legal recognition of independent, sovereign nation states and their rights to territorial integrity and political sovereignty. The Legalist Paradigm consists of six claims. The first two claims outline the existence of an international society of independent nation states that have agreed upon the rights of its members to territorial integrity and political sovereignty. Thus, the third claims defines aggression as the use of force to threaten the rights of another state. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Endoplasmic Reticulum 1. Introduction The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is the central intracellular organelle providing stringent quality control systems to protein synthesis. Upon accumulation of misfolded/ unfolded proteins in the ER, eukaryotic cells have developed an evolutionarily conserved adaptive mechanism, unfolded protein response (UPR), to clear these proteins and restore ER homeostasis. The ability to respond to perturbations in ER function is critical for cell survival but chronic or amplified ER stress can lead to apoptosis to protect the organism by removing the stressed cells. Growing evidence suggests that ER stress mediated apoptosis may contribute to pathophysiological processes involved in a number of diseases such as neurodegenerative disease, diabetes, atherosclerosis and renal disease [1]. This term paper intends to address (i) ER stress mediated signaling, (ii) molecular mechanisms linking ER stress to apoptosis and (iii) a potential role of ER stress in autoimmunity in the context of type I diabetes. 2. The Endoplasmic Reticulum The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an essential organelle that is a major place for the biogenesis of cellular components including proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates and internal calcium storage. ER is primarily responsible for protein translocation, protein folding and protein post modification. Proper folding of protein in the ER is accomplished with the aid of ER resident proteins or enzymes such as chaperones. Binding of chaperones to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Chloramphenicol And Protein Synthesis Lab Report Introduction In this practical, we will investigate and compare the mechanisms of action of the drugs: Chloramphenicol and Rifampicin, specifically by identifying whether their effects are bacteriostatic or bactericidal, and by looking at their effect on RNA and protein synthesis Antibiotics can be divided into two categories: Bactericidal or Bacteriostatic. Bactericidal antibiotics directly kill the micro organisms, and depending on the amount given, the bacteria will not recover after administration of the antibiotic is ceased. Bacteriostatic antibiotics prevent growth of the bacteria, by targeting proteins that are involved in reproduction. Once the bacteriostatic antibiotic is removed, population numbers usually increase again. One of the drugs we will be investigating is Chloramphenicol. Chloramphenicol is a member of the Amphenicol family/class of antibiotics. It is effective against gram negative and gram positive bacteria. Members of the family work by targeting protein synthesis. Due to its ability to work against gram negative and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rifampicin specifically binds to and inhibits RNA polymerase in prokaryotic organisms. It is a potent agent used to treat tuberculosis. It targets the majority of gram positive bacteria and a considerable number of gram negative bacteria. It is able to kill intracellular microorganisms as it can enter phagocytes. Drug resistance can arise quickly and easily, and is believed to occur due to a chromosomal mutation, which results in a change in the DNA dependent RNA polymerase. Rifampicin is orally administrated, and has no common unwanted side effects. Side effects can include: skin rashes, fever and gastrointestinal disturbances. Liver damage has been observed in rare cases. Rifampicin also induces metabolising enzymes in the liver, and therefore drugs such as warfarin may be quicker metabolised. (Dale and Rang, ... Hitler strongly believed that the Jews were responsible for Germany s defeat in 1918, even writing in a memoir that a European war would cause the extermination of the Jewish race in Germany (History.com). Hitler was also obsessed with the Aryan race, which he believed was pure . These two ideas would become the main cause for this genocide. The first ever concentration camp, Dachau, opened March 1933 and at first only imprisoned political enemies to the Nazi party. Over the next few years the Jews would be persecuted and forced out of work by the Nazi party. Then in November of 1938 things escalated in what is known as the night of broken glass , where German synagogues were burned down and Jewish owned shops were destroyed (History). Soon a farm house had come into view. Mom drove right up the driveway and parked the car. She started to get out of the car, but Tyler and I stayed put. We were both curious. I knew this because I felt the pull in my stomach that I had developed over the years of having a twin. I always knew when Tyler didn t feel good or felt sad, so I made it hard for him to keep a secret from me. Come on it s okay these people knew we were coming, Mom said, coming and opening my door and motioning for us to come out. I opened my door and Tyler followed me out. I studied the house. It was tall, at least three stories, it was colored a faded rose color with a door painted white with chipping paint. Mom walked to the front door and rapped on it a few times, a few flakes of paint fluttered down from the place Mom had hit the door. Both parties have very opposite beliefs from each other. The Republican party mainly consists of conservatives and believes that the government should not be too involved in the economy because a large government poses a threat to citizen s freedom. In 1992, an Individual named Ross Perot ran for the presidential election and although he gained 19% of the popular votes, he didn t receive any electoral votes. This happened because the Electoral College leverages the two party system. To decrease the amount of influence political parties have on the government, other governments like Sweden elect legislators in multimember districts instead of single member districts, and the number of seats that a party wins is proportional to the amount of its support among voters. • 18. Key Problems Associated With Titanium Machining And The... Ezugwu and Wang (1997) presented a review on the main problems associated with titanium machining, including tool wear and the mechanism responsible for tool failure. They suggest that uncoated carbides (WC/Co) cutting tools are better than most coated cutting tools for machining a titanium alloy. The high chemical reactivity of titanium causes welding of work piece material on the cutting tool during machining, leading to chipping and premature tool failure. The prominent failure modes in titanium machining were: notching, flank wear, crater wear, chipping, and catastrophic failure. Different tool materials have different response to different wear mechanism. Crater wear is closely related to the chemical composition of the cutting tool. The conclusions presented by this researcher, they suggest that dissolution diffusion wear dominates on the rake and flank face for uncoated cemented carbides used for the turning of titanium alloys. At very high cutting speeds and temperatures, the conclusion is that plastic deformation and development of cracks due to thermal shock will be the dominating wear mechanisms. Change of feed rate, depth of cut or cutting speed give changes in the wear rates. They also suggest that cutting fluids have to be used during titanium machining to minimize high stresses and temperatures. The cutting fluid has to work both as coolant and lubricating agent to lower the cutting forces and avoid chip welding, which is a phenomenon often experienced during ... Some countries are treated better than others for the purposes of such agreements, as opposed to the MFN status of the WTO, where everybody is treated the same. The first two ways of integration deal with movements of goods and services across borders and WTO commitments. So, to be clear, it is only the FTAs and Customs Unions towards which WTO rules are addressed. The WTO has certain commitments that members agree to, surrounding these preferential trade agreements. On an FTA, where the FTA and customs union are treated under art. XXIV of the GATT, the commitments under the agreements are required that the restrictions on non members cannot be increased. You can eliminate the barriers among your buddies, but you cannot increase the tariffs on non members. With the customs union, since there will be a common policy towards non members, there could be some instances where some good s tariffs go up for a particular member and down for another. So, it is looking at policies as a whole. There will be a requirement for compensation as such. The other expectation is that the restrictions both under the FTA or customs union need to be removed by members on substantially all trade and within a reasonable amount of time. So, the idea is that an FTA or customs union will not be only for the auto industry or only for the agricultural industry, it should be for trade, as a whole. Some agreements in practice do not meet this criteria and it is possible that a member could bring a dispute settlement case against two other WTO members, who are not living up ... • 23. Animal Forms Of Communication As Less Complex Or... As humans, we find it easy to conclude that we are the smartest, most superior beings on the planet. What is it that makes us so certain that this is true? Animals do not speak our language, so we make the judgment that they are less. If we look beyond our own form of verbal communication, we may find that the domesticated animals we keep as pets are trying to communicate with us sometimes, especially dogs. Do they not greet us at the door, running with a wagging tail? Do they not try to warn and ward off potential intruders? Do they not want to eat whatever it is that a person is eating, even if that means licking crumbs off the plate just before it goes in the dish washer? Cats communicate through habits of their own they purr and hiss. Why do we evaluate animal forms of communication as less complex or intelligent than our own? Though we often see non human animals as inferior, viewing their intelligence as fundamentally different from our own, imagining them as incapable of communicating in a way similar to humans, and focusing on differences in physical form and societal structure, humans and other animals are far more similar than we might think. Particular similarities exist between humans and primates. • 27. George Moore s Film Roger And Me Essay There is a spectrum to how a country s economic system is run, and on one end is capitalism and on the other is socialism. Both are equally good and equally bad, and therefore moderation is the perfect combination of the two. As of today, America stands too close to the capitalist end of the spectrum, and thus there are many economic inequalities, in that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and pull the less poor down with them. In the example of Flint, Michigan in Michael Moore s film Roger and Me, when the many workers laid off when the GM factory relocated suddenly became unemployed. Another example of capitalism gone too far is in Mark Dowie s article Pinto Madness, when Ford s lobbyists made it virtually impossible for lawmakers to make safety regulations on cars. Thus, with more socialism, so that the two are in moderation, there is a chance that all Americans can be truly happy. Capitalism and socialism are two extremes of a spectrum on which all countries fall; there are good and bad parts to both, and therefore a balance must be struck, as proved by extreme examples of capitalism in Pinto Madness and Roger and Me. While every country falls along a spectrum between capitalism and socialism, America falls close to the capitalist end. • 30. A Poison Tree Analysis Mistakes: An action that is misguided or wrong. Mistakes are made in everyday life. Mistakes can be anything from keeping in emotions, to how someone handled a situation. Mistakes aren t made unless someone does something wrong. This idea can be seen in many pieces of texts including the following poems. A Poison Tree by William Blake and A total stranger one black day by e.e. cummings both convey the message that people need to learn to deal with their emotions, otherwise it can lead to mistakes. Through A Poison Tree, William Blake conveys that handling emotions inappropriately leads to mistakes. The use of an extended metaphor expresses this theme because William Blake compares hatred to a tree. As the poem continues, so does the growth of the tree, and hatred the subject is feeling. The speaker states, I told it not, my wrath did grow./And it grew both day and night (Blake 4 and 9). In this quote, the speaker expresses that he hasn t told the person who he hates, his feelings, and they continue to grow. His hatred grows more and more as time passes, just like a tree grows and grows. This compares to a tree because trees start off as a small seed and they continue to grow into a large tree. • 31. Patriotism in Spiderman Movies The portrayal of the feelings of the general public is constantly used in film to stir the audience. If the filmmaker can rouse their feelings, people will be more engrossed in the movie than they would be otherwise. What is arguably the strongest emotion in many people is the feeling of patriotism. As George Bernard Shaw said, Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it. Though this feeling is not necessarily based on logic, it is none the less one of the most powerful feelings along with hatred and love. This movie doesn t jolt the viewer into having a greater feeling of patriotism afterwards, but it does reaffirm their support for the troops and however much patriotism they felt beforehand. Though Spider Man (2002) and Spider Man 2 (2004) are very close together in terms of time and plotline, the way they use the superhero to bring out the movie goers feeling of patriotism is very different. The first is almost completely blind in the amount of patriotism it fed its audience. With the unwavering support for the government the American public felt at the time, the movie not only portrayed the country s patriotic feelings, but actually caused a temporary increase in the amount of patriotism felt by most movie goers. This patriotism is very simple, but can have a great impact when used at the right times. The second Spider Man movie had just as much patriotism as the first, but it was used in a much more subtle way. Spiderman was no longer the faceless leader of the people against evil, but he was a representative of the American troops and how human they really are. Spiderman was no longer invincible in this movie, and although he won in the end, he took a lot more damage than he did in the first movie. Just as real men and women died overseas, Spiderman was injured badly and only survived by his strong will and the undying support of the citizens of New York. Together, Spider Man (2002) and Spider Man 2 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

People can instantly listen to songs by a single search, even entire albums. Digital downloading has allowed people to have constant access to any and all music. Deciding whether it is affecting the music industry positively or negatively is its own question, but there is absolutely no question that the entire industry is affected. Most music is available to listen to without necessarily requiring payment. Through websites like YouTube and SoundCloud, a fairly large amount of music is accessible. Alternatively, some people simply download the music from different sources. There has been some complaint that downloading the music from such sources is considered copyright piracy, but not much is done to combat the illegality of pirating music. Combined with the fact the any given person s music taste can change in weeks, buying every song that they enjoy listening to can get extremely expensive. The executive vice president of the Warner Brothers Group, Paul Vidich said, It is a challenge that we have got to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since the younger generations are more apt at using computers, they can outsmart these large companies that control music sales. Capitalism has a way of forcing companies to necessitate the creation of ways to end the free downloading music. They are not lacking in money by any means, but in a capitalistic society companies must take all money obtainable. Vidich stated that there are things that will happen that will begin to change the way we do business. Many people are also aware that small bands rely on the profit of people buying their songs, thus, people will buy songs from those that need the money to continue making music. They also know that the bigger, more popular bands can survive without that profit, using the money gained from touring and selling band ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
