Essay On News Consumption
Background and Research Question Survey questions and questionnaires can always be improved
upon. This can be done through changing the wording of the question, choosing a different response
scale for the question, or reordering the questions in the questionnaire. There are various ways to find
out if a survey question needs revision, such as identifying grammar and concept errors in the question
using specific techniques, or conducting in depth interviews to find out if survey respondents have any
issues in answering the survey questions. I will be using questions about news consumption provided
by Pew Research Center (Pew) to show how questionnaire improvement can be done. The questions
about news consumption were implemented by Pew to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I will use a few different methods. One method is by using the Problem Classification Coding Scheme
(CCS). The CCS is a process to test for issues in the question answering processes. It is a series of 28
questions that go through each stage of answering a survey question. It tests to see if there are any
issues in any of the states of answering a question (Schaeffer and Dykema, 2011:919). Another
method is to the Question Understanding Aid (QUAID). QUAID is a mechanism to test for issues in
wording of a survey question, such as vague words or question length or even grammatical issues. The
goal of QUAID is to ensure that each question is grammatically correct, and easy for the respondent to
comprehend (Schaeffer and Dykema, 2011, 921). A third method and last method is to use cognitive
interviews. Cognitive interviews are small group discussions to talk about issues or topics to help in
the process of writing survey questions and making the survey process go quicker (BCB, 2014:434).
All three methods will be used for questionnaire improvement. For the cognitive interviews, two
interviews were done with people I knew. A summary about the people interviewed is presented in
Table 1.
Analysis
After conducting the cognitive interviews and using the CCS and QUAID, there are a few problems
present. For each question, the reference period is vague. The preamble asks for general news habits.
This is a problem since general could have very different meanings

Plato And Aristotle s Views On Modern Political Thought...
Philosophers have pondered what makes for an ideal state since antiquity. In fact, the ideas theorized
by the ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle over two millennia ago on this subject still
resonate strongly today, influencing modern political thought and regime construction. Plato contends
the ideal state is one ruled by a class of guardians, or philosopher kings . These philosopher kings are
selected to rule because they are best fit for the responsibility. Aristotle, a pupil of Plato,
acknowledges and agrees with Plato on the point that states ruled by philosopher kings would be ideal
states, but adds such states are simply not reasonable. Instead, Aristotle advocates for rule by polity : a

Likewise, children born of guardians deemed unfit to be future guardians are relegated to one of the
other classes. By creating a system of specialization in which ability solely determines the citizens
duties, Plato ensures those who govern his city will not be the beneficiaries of parental and/or class
nepotism. For this reason, the city s political health is protected from the deleterious effects of an
inefficient ruling class. This class structure is wholly unconventional, but necessary in Plato s ideal
city. This is due to his position on the equity, or lack thereof, between humans; some people, be it by
nature or nurture, are more competent than others and the most competent should rule over those less
so for the benefit of the whole. However, Plato knows this system will be fraught if it ignores base
human desire. Citizens will not willingly accept being corralled into specific societal roles, especially
if they think those roles are unjust or beneath them. Plato s system cannot work without a noble lie .
The noble lie promulgated to the citizens of Plato s city relies on a sort of divine meddling. According
to the lie, although everyone in the society is related and should share a familial bond, guardians,
auxiliaries, and producers all have different levels of ability imparted onto them by the god in the form
of intrinsic metals. As Socrates says

Bull Trout Research Paper
Introduction: The Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) in the family Salmonidae and are a char native to
Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Montana and western Canada. Compared to other salmonids,
bull trout have more specific habitat requirements that appear to influence their distribution and
abundance (USFWS, 2015). Bull trout were historically regarded as pests due to their voracious
predatory behavior. It was thought that bull trout depleted populations of more desirable game fish by
feeding on them when they were very small thus supposedly depleting the numbers. In fact at one
point there was a bounty placed on bull trout tails in Canada to encourage fisherman to rid the waters
of this Bully, which effectively eliminated them from certain watersheds (Donald, D. B., and D. J.
Alger. 1993). At one time in the early 1900 s the Bull Trout thrived in the waterways of the Northwest.
The Upper Snake Recovery Unit for the Bull trout occurs within central Idaho, northern Nevada, and

The bull trout s species name (confluentus), which translates roughly from Latin to mean flowing

trout are considered char and are native to the Pacific Northwest and western Canada. The historical
range of bull trout includes major river basins in the Pacific Northwest at about 41 to 60 degrees North
latitude, from the southern limits in the McCloud River in northern California and the Jarbidge River
in Nevada to the headwaters of the Yukon River in the Northwest Territories, Canada (Watson, G. and
T. Hillman. 1997) More westward the bull trout s current range includes Puget Sound, various coastal
rivers of British Columbia, Canada, and southeast Alaska (Behnke, R. J.

they have been disciplined by spanking. Spanking had become the norm in many household across
America. In fact, the percentage of spanking in America is increasing by 5% each year. But why is
spanking so popular in America you may be wondering? Well surprisingly it has a lot to do with

Should Children Be Allowed To Play Violent Video Games...
In the article Should Children be allowed to Play Violent Video Games the author states that although
there are many different pros and cons and there is no right answer to the central question. The author
states that the decision of children playing violent games be left up to them. In the article the author
asserts that one argument to allow children to play video games that showcase violence is that it can
act as a stress reliever and help control their emotions. This argument is a valid one by those who
believe this but for those who have a counter argument say that this is not true. The counter argument
to video games being helpful is that they are harmful. There is no inbetween or balance between these
two sides the author suggests that the two opposing sides will never come to an agreement. The
negative side says that video games make children more violent and less capable to deal with real
world problems. The argument of Children being allowed to play violent video games is ultimately a
decision that a parent would need to make with a compromise between the child and the parent. In the
discussions of children playing violent video games, one controversial issue has been weather it
beneficial or not. On the one hand opposers argues that Violent video games ruins kids abilities to
handle real world problems. On the other hand defenders opposes saying that these games are
beneficial for children. My own view is that video games can be beneficial for kids. In my

Media Portrayal Of Beauty
Some people occasionally feel that their own appearance is unacceptable to society because of what
others are expecting based on published media. Those include, social media, published articles, and
even movies and TV shows. The media s portrayal of beauty has had a generational effect on
American society with young people falling victim to unrealistic standards. Failing to participate in
these ideals can lead to non acceptance, ostracization, and even bullying due to the unfounded
judgements of those who do participate in the beauty standards perpetuated by the media. As a matter
of fact, research on the impact of those ideals have been done. Many of the studies have been made
based on the outlook of people who would most likely be affected by the media, and their arguments
refute the idea that the media doesn t impact people. The concept of having or being pressured into
aiming for unrealistic visions based on what society deems acceptable is absurd and should be
addressed. Although in the past decades, women have been the center of beauty, during the present
time, the portrayal of beauty is no longer limited to females only. The vision of beauty applies to both
male and female teenagers, young adults and adults. Based on what you own, dress like, and even the
way you act determines if you are considered beautiful by the media. The ultimate goal of this paper is
to explore the reasons on why media affect people, how some feel pressured into changing just for the

How Does Morgan Use Propaganda In Fast Fashion
Faux fur that slips through the fingers, eye
catching sequins, a crisp, clean coat that
exudes an air of professionalism around those who don it. Faces streaked with grime and sweat,
mountains of fabric scraps, and large industrial complexes shrouded in plumes of smoke and
pollution. By exploiting footage capturing such evocative imagery, Andrew Morgan illustrates in
their documentary film, The True Cost , that these stark contrasts are simply two sides of the
same coin for an industry that willingly cuts corners at its workers expense in order to snatch up
every last coin. Fast fashion, which is analogous to factory farming or intensive agriculture in the
food industry, is a method by which the production of clothing is executed on a massive scale

Many of the clips and montages that are used to prove Morgan s point paint
America s materialism and consumerism in particular as the root of the problem surrounding
social, economic and ecological upheaval of certain groups of people on a global scale. Because
of this, many of the scenes in the film that are especially powerful may raise controversy on
whether or not the information should be taken at face value or with a pinch of salt. One such
example couples quotes from Morgan s interview with Dr. Tim Kasser of Nox College with a
montage of advertisement snippets and clips of major shopping hubs lined with crowds of
consumers and large TV screens broadcasting even more advertisements and commercial. Even
stock footage from Nazi Germany and vintage cartoons of children doing the Nazi salute are
incorporated as well. The main message, as Kasser elucidates in the interview, is that

Michael Chekhov Research Paper
Michael Chekhov is a Russian born and raised actor, director, and playwright. He was the nephew of
Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, one of the greatest short fiction writers in history. At the age of 20
Michael Chekhov auditioned to work under Stanislavsky and joined the First Studio of the Moscow
Art Theatre. There he worked with and was influenced by Stanislavsky, Leopold Sulerzhitsky, and
Yevgeny Vakhtangov, to name a few. Stanislavsky referred to Chekhov as his most brilliant student
and when the First Studio became the Second, he invited Chekhov to join him there as its director. The

According to the acting school stop website, Chekhov s views on the job of the actor was not to
imitate life, but rather to interpret it, to bring out its hidden meaning to the audience. For this, they
must be able to act with ease, bring form and beauty to their creative expressions, and see the big
picture so they can convey it in their performance, (Michael). This site goes on to discuss the things
that his Method consists of. Discussed first is the idea of allowing the body to be trained to be
receptive so that it can convey the inner life and emotions of a character to the audience. Chekhov
thought that method acting was very unhealthy for the actor and stunted creativity and inspiration for a
character. He instead wanted actors to get into the mindset of the character and learn to understand
why they do what they do through analysis. He encouraged students to go into the world and watch
real people interacting with each other and with the world around them to draw inspiration for
themselves. His method consists of a lot of inner analysis, meaning using your brain and your own
creativity and imagination to explore the characters reality. It also suggests that an actor should learn
to imagine their environment and its atmosphere/ conditions to better understand the physicalizations
of the character. For example, if its cold outside, or

The Four Types Of Authority In The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games is a fictional story set in totalitarian nation Panem. It follows Katniss Everdeen as
she takes the place of her younger sister in the Hunger Games Tournaments. The tournament consists
of 24 contestants who are forced into a cosmic arena to fight until only one survives. The Hunger
Games exhibits four authority types; charismatic, legal rational. Traditional authority is legitimate
power based on customs and beliefs passed down from generation to generation. The church, family,
grandparents, parents, the Pope and the monarchy are examples of people that might have the most
impact in conveying what is right or wrong in a persons life. Most individuals tend to follow their
primary agents or leaders when it comes to what type of practices they put the most faith in rather the
leaders personal appeal. Haymitch Abernathy played by Woody Harrelson was the winner of the 50th

Violence In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
No scene of violence exists for its own sake, in reality and in literature. John Steinbeck exhibits this
concept in the literary work Of Mice Men. Violent scenes and events assemble this post civil war
novel to unravel a twisted and somewhat unexpected climax. The climax is not the only purpose that
the violence serves, however. These implicitly gruesome scenes fulfill foreshadowing, emphasize
existing concepts, acknowledge seemingly irrelevant events, and present themes. From the first pages
of the book, John Steinbeck describes Lennie as huge and tremendously strong. This theme of being
stronger than one realizes is carried on all the way through to the end of the novel. Naturally, violence
has to be implemented to support this theme. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Small moments such as seemingly irrelevant conversations were signified by acts of violence. The
smallest moments signified by violence is the conversation amongst George and Lennie in chapter two
in which George tells Lennie Don t you even take a look at that ____. I don t care what she says and
what she does. I seen em poison before, but I never seen no piece of jail bait worse than her. You leave
her be. Followed by Lennie crying out I don like this place, George. This ain t no good place. I wanna
get outta here. This exchange of words is the first indication of foreshadowing to Lennie killing
Curley s wife and general evidence that terrible events are to come. Another moment that was
acknowledged by violence is a conversation between George and Slim in which George says ...Why
he d do any damn thing I tol him... This one statement out of his entire paragraph introduces Lennie s
obedience as a theme within the book as well as evokes foreshadowing to George s process of killing
Lennie; George uses Lennie s obedience to him to keep him from seeing the gun in his hand and
giving him a saddening last moment. A subsequent example of the previous is also in chapter three
following Carlson killing Candy s dog; Candy tells George, I oughtta shot that dog myself, George. I
shouldn t oughtta of let no stranger shoot my dog. This moment is signified by George shooting and
killing Lennie himself at the very end of the work before

As the Sandinistas adjusted to their new position of power, they made decisions that put their own
political agenda ahead of the welfare of Nicaraguan citizens. They controlled everything from menu
prices to water to electricity. Sandinista policies angered the newly instituted Regan administration in
Washington, and they were determined to overthrow them. The counter revolution offered the perfect
opportunity and the CIA agreed to secretly fund the contras (over $15 million between 1981 1982).
Argentina, with its efficient and brutal military regime, was the perfect candidate. Along with

Borge was seen as radical, and even though he was not a skilled fighter, he was a great conspirator and

because none of the other commandates could ever fully trust Borge and he could never fully trust

Immigration Protest
Introduction:
A day without immigrants protest was one that spread an ideal ology throughout businesses and labor
force. The goal of this protest was to unite as immigrants and show what kind of hit the economy and
labor force would take if immigrants weren t there to fuel it. This has taken place twice in recent
history, once on May 1, 2006 and recently on February 21, 2017. One could argue whether they are
successful in their efforts to show how important immigration is to the American economy.
Background studies:
Immigrants make up 12 percent of the population and more than 17 percent of the working population.
This means that based on population immigrants are more involved in the workforce than natives
themselves. With trump getting elected to Presidency, and his views on immigration control and it
being viewed as discrimination, one could say that he is just putting fuel on the flame. According to
Moriah Butler, Immigration protest are viewed by the general public in a disruptive manner with
people saying that there will never be a right time to protest (Butler 1.)
Jose Andres is a different case in many opinions. Andres owns a restaurant and for the protests he shut
down his business in order to show his employees that he cares about them. According to him he has
workers that have been with him for 25 or more years. He says that he owes it to them to show that he
cares because they have stuck with him in good and bad times, and have put in more

Consequences Of Statistical Inferences Providing A Result
Consequences of statistical inferences providing a result rather than an answer could include
researchers incorrectly applying related management implications to their studies, when in reality they
are applying a treatment that was not correctly interpreted. This could result in the new study
producing a non significant result when a biologically significant result should have been detected.
Researchers desperate for a significant P value may claim an observation that was not present in the
study, or perform researchers degrees of freedom, which is defined as decision making as researchers
conduct the study, and not beforehand.
b. Truth cannot be derived from a single study; it must be repeated to increase the precision of the
study and therefore the strength of inference made about the results. Often, using the same sample and
similar methods will not procure similar results, and therefore a consensus of studies should be
provided to make a general claim. Studies that truly follow the scientific method and include
randomization and repeatability will be closer to discovering the truth than other studies.
c. In the vitamin E study, the first studies conducted on the effects on vitamin E continued to be cited
and defended even when new evidence showed their results were incorrect because they felt true. This

The history of the United States has been influenced by England in many ways.
In the second half of the 1800 s, the railroad, which was invented in England, had a major effect on
Western expansion in the United States.

Romantics dreamed of the discoveries of wild Indians, scouts and hunters, and, of course, gold. Gold
had been a desired find throughout the exploration of America. The California Gold Rush of 1849
again created much excitement about the search for gold.
The Pacific Railroads were founded when the Civil War was in progress. Until the war was over, the
transcontinental railroad was a giant enterprise stalled by much bickering between a reluctant
Congress and the Army, who had clamored for it (Cooke 254). If it had been left to the government, it
would have taken another twenty years to complete the transcontinental railroad. However, it was a
commercial venture, and it was fortunately fed by the adrenaline of competition. There were two
railroad companies building the transcontinental railroad, the Union Pacific from the East, and the
Central Pacific from the West.
The two companies struggled to beat each other in slamming down a record mileage of track. At first,
Congress avidly pursued the project and they had stipulated that the Central Pacific should stop when
it reached the California Border
(Congress was full of Easterners). In 1865, after much argument about the aid the government was
providing to the two companies, the actual construction of the transcontinental railroad was started.
Then in 1866, Congress decided that two companies

The Female Body Is Always Growing And Changing As A Woman...
The female body is always growing and changing as a woman ages. From the time she is born to her
reproductive system evolving, getting her first menstrual cycle and having to worry about getting
sexually related dieses. A woman s body is constantly adjusting and adapting as it grows. Through all
the years of science most of the female body and how it works is still unknown today. The female
body is a beautiful mystery.
The female reproductive system consists of both external and internal genitals. Of all the parts that
make up the reproductive system the main two parts are the uterus, which holds and develops the fetus
and the ovaries, which are two cavities that hold the woman s eggs. The ovaries can produce and hold
anywhere from 40,000 eggs to 400,000 eggs each. The body then begins a process called ovulation at
which the ovary releases an egg through what are called fallopian tubes or canals into the uterus. The
egg then attaches to the uterus lining called the endometrium, which nourishes the egg during and
through pregnancy. While the egg makes its journey through the fallopian tubes it can either be
fertilized by the male sperm or not. If the egg does not get fertilized then it is expelled through the
vagina in a process called menstruation. The vagina is a hollow, tunnel like structure of the female
internal genitalia whose reproductive functions are to receive the penis and its ejaculate, serve as a
route of exit for the newborn, and provide an exit for

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Taylor Swift s Song Blank Space
In musical superstar Taylor Swift s music video for her song Blank Space, she is portraying herself as
the high maintenance and dramatic girlfriend that the media believes she is. The speaker of this text is
the media s perception of Taylor Swift and her message is about the disconnect between who Swift
really is and who the media sees her as. I believe Swift has two purposes for this music video. One is
for her character in the music video to warn her audience about the type of love that boys want, and
the other for real life Taylor herself to poke holes into the media s concept of her love life. The video
is filled with satire and paradoxes to convince us that our idea of Taylor Swift is not an accurate
opinion of her. At the very beginning of the video, we see a young man get out of a car in front of a
massive mansion that appears to be Swift s home. The car he gets ... Show more content on

She says, Oh my God, look at that face, you look like my next mistake, love s a game, want to play?
Starting out with Oh my God, look at that face she is telling us that this character is very superficial
and is only looking at the outside appearance of the young man who is visiting her mansion. You look
like my next mistake, love s a game, want to play? is implying that this guy is just another object to be
had by Swift and another mistake in a long series of mistakes and that love for her is just a game, not
something to be taken seriously. This is exactly the persona that the media portrays Swift as. She has
always been seen as someone who moves on from guy to guy like the whole idea of love is just for fun
without consideration of the other persons feelings. This idea comes from her relationships with other
celebrities and lyrics in her music that go through many of her relationship troubles. Although this is
who she appears to be in real life, she is taking that idea of herself and exaggerating it in the

8,265% + 1,3% = 9,565% We assume that the fixed debt in the Lodging division would have a longer
duration than that in the Restaurants division, hence we used 30 year Gov. bond rate for fixed debt in
Lodging division and 10 year Gov. rate for fixed debt in Restaurants division. For the floating debt,
we considered the 1 year Gov. rate applying to both Lodging and restaurants divisions. Furthermore,
after taking the average of both floating and fixed debt rates for both divisions respectively we added
the premium above Gov. Rate to the result and arrived at the pretax cost of debt. Cost of Equity
Lodging and Restaurant divisions Following the footsteps of the framework used in this analysis
earlier, we would utilize the CAPM in order to calculate cost of equity for both Lodging and restaurant
divisions. re = rf + β (MRP) For Restaurants division we ll continue considering the risk free rate of
8.72%, based on the 10 year Gov. rate. For Lodging division we ll consider the 30 year Gov. rate of
8.95% as the risk free rate. This approach would quantify the effect of duration differences between
the investments in each division. We ll consider the MRP (Market Risk Premium) of 7.43% based on
the average spread between S P 500 composite returns and long term US Gov.

Essay about Personal Narrative
Personal Narrative Mother and Daughter Relationship
I am rummaging through a cardboard box full of pictures, looking for the perfect one to put in one of
those sentimental Mother and Daughter word frames from Hallmark. Finally, a photo falls from the
box, and I pick it up, knowing I have found what I am looking for.
It is a picture taken from spring of the year I was four. My mother is sitting on the couch in our living
room and I am standing in front of her. The fabric of our couch is a beige and dark brown flowered
print. The wall behind the sofa is covered with dark wood paneling. Mom, wearing a brown patterned
dress, seems to blend into her surroundings. I am standing in front of her, radiant in the dress she has

Mom s hand is resting on my right arm, as if she is holding me in the picture s frame. The rest of her
features seem to blend into the drab background, but her right hand shows up clearly as it holds me in
place.
My mother hasn t changed since the picture was taken almost sixteen years ago. Her hair style and
figure have matured with age, but everything else has remained constant. She still stands behind me
when we go to take a family photograph. She never sees it as trying to hide herself from the critical
eye of the camera, but insists that I step out in front because I am the smaller one, the thinner one, the
prettier one. Throughout my entire life, she has lived by the same philosophy. She always works to
push me to the front of the group because she honestly and simply believes that I belong there. She
guides and pokes and prods with the same right hand to ensure that I am not wandering off or wasting
my time and energy where it is not needed.
Looking at the picture, I again notice how clearly her hand shows up on my elbow. The picture doesn t
show how tense her hand is as it fights to keep me in the picture. It doesn t show how tightly her
fingers grip my arm as she struggles to keep me where I should be. It also fails to show that she will
let me go if I protest loud enough and pull away with enough force. The furniture, the fashions, and
even the walls in the living room have changed, but her hand remains at my elbow. It

Stipends
If you re unwilling to grind out the details of why your faith based nonprofit should start offering
stipends, consider delaying the transition. Answering the why question provides motivation for
staffers expected to promote the change. It prepares you to answer critics and there will be critics. It
give confidence to staffers recruited into roles with stipends. If you re ready to do the groundwork,
consider the following five reasons nonprofits start paying stipends (and one reason to not start): The
nonprofit will fulfill its mission and vision more effectively by starting stipends. This by itself is not
sufficient reason to start stipends. However, it is a prerequisite. The strategy of only volunteer staff no

Leadership has tried every imaginable form of training and team building and reorganizing. Yet no
growth. This is a time to consider providing stipends. Stipends are part of a plan to change
organizational culture. There are organizations where being a nonprofit equates with being
nonprofessional. In such nonprofits it is common to hear people say, We re just a nonprofit. One step
(and I mean just one step) in elevating how members see the professionalism of their organization is
starting stipends. Stipends are part of a new leader development process. When leading nonprofits I m
especially gratified by working with leaders we internally developed. One widespread development
process moves people from organizational members to volunteer staff to stipend staff to paid staff.
Stipends are a transitional step in starting to pay salaries. Providing stipends before offering salaries
gives nonprofits practical experience in handling payroll, taxes, etc. It also buys the nonprofit time to

Outlasting the SARS Epidemic
Introduction
When speaking of epidemics, the memories which come to mind are different for different people; for
those who lived in Hong Kong in 2002 2003, images that spring up would almost invariably be of
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, the epidemic known to man as SARS in short. Sharing with us
the three letter acronym (SAR) which was given to us by our leaders in China, this ordeal has left its
mark on our city in more ways than one. It had caused a widespread wave of mysophobia and health
consciousness among the Hong Kong people, which outlasted the SARS epidemic but is probably
slowly waning. It has also raised the awareness of the government of the importance of the control of
infectious diseases, both in the community and in the clinical setting. Most importantly, SARS showed
us what works and what needs improving in terms of infection control in the event of a major
epidemic.
Originally starting in November 2002 in Guangdong Province of China, the SARS coronavirus has
since infected as many as 8422 persons worldwide, with a total of 1755 patients infected, among
which 300 unfortunately succumbed to this disease. (1) Apart from being a major epidemic in the
medical history of Hong Kong and a health threat of global concern, another aspect of SARS worth
noting is the occurrence of nosocomial outbreaks. SARS was the cause of nosocomial outbreaks in
Canada, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore. (2) The impact of nosocomial outbreak in an
epidemic such as SARS

Religion And Hypocrisy In The Decameron
Boccaccio, through the stories in The Decameron, often makes fun of the Italy s false perfection and
immortality. Through each story he picks a specific aspect of the Italian imperfect to poke fun at and
highlight the ridiculousness or hypocrisy of. One topic he often highlights is religion and how
arbitrary it was at this time in Italy, especially during the time of the black plague. Two of these stories
that discuss religion are the First Day First story and the Third Day First Story. These two stories
focus on religion and the falsely perfect smoke screen that hides the naivety and hypocrisy in their
holiest of places and people. The story of Ser Cepparello is the first of the two stories in The
Decameron that humorously makes fun of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

while in the story of Masetto, the sinners were the Nuns while the person who was acting naive to an
extent was the citizen. Though in both stories there was a sinner and someone else, the other person
was not completely innocent. The priest Ser Cepparello spoke to was insane for believing that any
man at the time almost never sinned and was, as much a virgin today as when [he] came forth from
[his] mama s body (Boccaccio 23). Masetto, on the other hand knew exactly what he was doing when
he went to the convent to garden, but at the same time, the nuns could have chosen not to break their
vow and to stay pure and married to God instead of giving in and having unsolicited (to them at least)
sex with him. The naivety and lying both displayed by the clergy and congregation shows just how out

Cognitive Dissonance Theory Essay
The theory of Cognitive Dissonance states that when individuals are presented with information that
implies we act in a way that contradicts our moral standards, we experience discomfort (Aronson,

A psychological term used to describe mental conflict that occurs when beliefs or assumptions are
contradicted by new information; arouses unease or tension; relieved by one of several defensive
maneuvers: rejecting, explaining away, or avoiding new information; persuading self that no conflict

Leon Festinger and James Carlsmith also tested his theory in 1959. They put all the participants
through a dull task. The task consisted in placing a large number of spools on pegs on a board, turn
each spool a quarter turn, take the spool off the pegs and then put them back on. The subject s attitudes
toward this task were negative.
The participants were then asked to lie about the task to another person. This person was actually an
assistant in the study. The lie was to try to convince the assistant that the task was actually interesting
and fun. The participants were either given one dollar or twenty dollars for lying about the task. The
experimenters found that those who lied and received the one dollar experienced the greatest
dissonance, and they were more motivated to seek cognitive constancy than the participants who
received twenty dollars. Those who received the one dollar reported to have enjoyed the task more
than those who received the twenty dollars.
There was an inconsistency between the attitudes of the participants and the behavior. The participants
who received twenty dollars just wanted the money. The larger amount of money provided external
justification for the behavior. There was no dissonance, and the participants did not need to change
their attitudes.
For the subjects who received only one dollar there was less external justification, and more
dissonance. They reduced their dissonance by changing their attitudes toward the task. The

side, right from onset of the helping process, I see signs of confidence in whatever advice I am giving

This study could be valuable because it offers information on how the population has and could
change over the years. You can take this and technically watch population changes. If the population
in the area is on the decline, it might not be smart to invest because there would be a minimal amount
of people in the area to consume the product. If the population is on the rise, that would be a positive
indication. Basically showing that the area is growing and that shows a good sign for investing. This
information costs $1,500.
Third is a study that investigates Coors market share estimates for 2000 through 2005. This looks into
the number of gallons of the brand that are consumed locally and nationally. This is important because
it shows if anyone in the area is already consuming the product. If people are already consuming the
product it could be a good investment because you already have a market established. If not, you
could take the gamble which would be to basically trying to go into the new area and try to establish

Why I Want To Be A Drummer
Drummers are perennially underrated. Some writers make rock critic jokes, even other musicians
make drummer jokes. But where would the Beatles be without their drummer Ringo Star. The real
human drummer was replaced with electronic computer machines during the eighties and nineties for
a while, but music fans realized that this was not as good as the sound of a real talented drummer. The
drummer does not just support the band they hold it up and push the forward. Robert Plant, the lead
singer of Led Zeppelin was very fond of his drummer, John Bonham, who was one of the best
drummers out there during his time and even today. When he passed away the lead singer could not go

The argument on how much practice it takes to be a drummer is essential for new musicians to learn
about because if they truly want to be a drummer they must know that it is not the usual go to
instrument in a band. It takes so much patience and practice to become a good enough drummer to
even be in a band. It is also imperative to know how much work goes into becoming the drummer
because some fans may view the drummer as just the guy or girl in the background where they need to
realize how a band cannot be a band without the drummer. This argument is also for the drummers out
there who need to receive more recognition from their fans. Drumming has been around forever, and it
is such remarkable instrument to learn. Drummers may also

Protecting The Innocence By F. D. Salinger

English 3 AP
26 April 2015
Protecting the Innocence; An Overview of The Catcher in the Rye During the nineteen fifties, as the
population of the United States hurdled in a whirlpool of amiss, a writer sought to conserve innocence
as teenagers move into adulthood. The change from their teenage years to adulthood made them
question religion, friendships, and fate. J. D. Salinger saw this as a potential pitfall for teens; therefore,
he adopts a unique writing style to which they can relate to. Sol and Miriam Salinger s son, Jerome
David Salinger, was born on January 1st, 1919 in New York ( Salinger ). Supported by her Jewish
husband, a successful meat and cheese importer, Miriam was able to raise Salinger and his two older
siblings in the fashionable apartment district of upper Manhattan (French). In 1934 Salinger attended
Valley Forge Military academy, where he grasped literature and began writing short stories (French).
In spite of later being drafted to be in the military during World War II, Salinger wrote numerous
works which inspired the lives of countless Americans. Through his use of point of view,
characterization, and symbolism, Salinger aims towards conserving teenagers innocence as they move
into adulthood in The Catcher in the Rye.
Holden, the teenage protagonist of the novel, experiences an ongoing battle with the adult world and
the cruelty associated with it. Holden respects those who represent or protect innocence, and is

  • 2. Essay On News Consumption Background and Research Question Survey questions and questionnaires can always be improved upon. This can be done through changing the wording of the question, choosing a different response scale for the question, or reordering the questions in the questionnaire. There are various ways to find out if a survey question needs revision, such as identifying grammar and concept errors in the question using specific techniques, or conducting in depth interviews to find out if survey respondents have any issues in answering the survey questions. I will be using questions about news consumption provided by Pew Research Center (Pew) to show how questionnaire improvement can be done. The questions about news consumption were implemented by Pew to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I will use a few different methods. One method is by using the Problem Classification Coding Scheme (CCS). The CCS is a process to test for issues in the question answering processes. It is a series of 28 questions that go through each stage of answering a survey question. It tests to see if there are any issues in any of the states of answering a question (Schaeffer and Dykema, 2011:919). Another method is to the Question Understanding Aid (QUAID). QUAID is a mechanism to test for issues in wording of a survey question, such as vague words or question length or even grammatical issues. The goal of QUAID is to ensure that each question is grammatically correct, and easy for the respondent to comprehend (Schaeffer and Dykema, 2011, 921). A third method and last method is to use cognitive interviews. Cognitive interviews are small group discussions to talk about issues or topics to help in the process of writing survey questions and making the survey process go quicker (BCB, 2014:434). All three methods will be used for questionnaire improvement. For the cognitive interviews, two interviews were done with people I knew. A summary about the people interviewed is presented in Table 1. Analysis After conducting the cognitive interviews and using the CCS and QUAID, there are a few problems present. For each question, the reference period is vague. The preamble asks for general news habits. This is a problem since general could have very different meanings ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Plato And Aristotle s Views On Modern Political Thought... Philosophers have pondered what makes for an ideal state since antiquity. In fact, the ideas theorized by the ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle over two millennia ago on this subject still resonate strongly today, influencing modern political thought and regime construction. Plato contends the ideal state is one ruled by a class of guardians, or philosopher kings . These philosopher kings are selected to rule because they are best fit for the responsibility. Aristotle, a pupil of Plato, acknowledges and agrees with Plato on the point that states ruled by philosopher kings would be ideal states, but adds such states are simply not reasonable. Instead, Aristotle advocates for rule by polity : a constitutional government ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Likewise, children born of guardians deemed unfit to be future guardians are relegated to one of the other classes. By creating a system of specialization in which ability solely determines the citizens duties, Plato ensures those who govern his city will not be the beneficiaries of parental and/or class nepotism. For this reason, the city s political health is protected from the deleterious effects of an inefficient ruling class. This class structure is wholly unconventional, but necessary in Plato s ideal city. This is due to his position on the equity, or lack thereof, between humans; some people, be it by nature or nurture, are more competent than others and the most competent should rule over those less so for the benefit of the whole. However, Plato knows this system will be fraught if it ignores base human desire. Citizens will not willingly accept being corralled into specific societal roles, especially if they think those roles are unjust or beneath them. Plato s system cannot work without a noble lie . The noble lie promulgated to the citizens of Plato s city relies on a sort of divine meddling. According to the lie, although everyone in the society is related and should share a familial bond, guardians, auxiliaries, and producers all have different levels of ability imparted onto them by the god in the form of intrinsic metals. Compared to other salmonids, bull trout have more specific habitat requirements that appear to influence their distribution and abundance (USFWS, 2015). Bull trout were historically regarded as pests due to their voracious predatory behavior. It was thought that bull trout depleted populations of more desirable game fish by feeding on them when they were very small thus supposedly depleting the numbers. In fact at one point there was a bounty placed on bull trout tails in Canada to encourage fisherman to rid the waters of this Bully, which effectively eliminated them from certain watersheds (Donald, D. B., and D. J. Alger. 1993). At one time in the early 1900 s the Bull Trout thrived in the waterways of the Northwest. The bull trout s species name (confluentus), which translates roughly from Latin to mean flowing together, presumably refers to the larger rivers and streams which they inhabit (Moyle, 2002). The historical range of bull trout includes major river basins in the Pacific Northwest at about 41 to 60 degrees North latitude, from the southern limits in the McCloud River in northern California and the Jarbidge River in Nevada to the headwaters of the Yukon River in the Northwest Territories, Canada (Watson, G. and T. Failing to participate in these ideals can lead to non acceptance, ostracization, and even bullying due to the unfounded judgements of those who do participate in the beauty standards perpetuated by the media. As a matter of fact, research on the impact of those ideals have been done. Many of the studies have been made based on the outlook of people who would most likely be affected by the media, and their arguments refute the idea that the media doesn t impact people. The concept of having or being pressured into aiming for unrealistic visions based on what society deems acceptable is absurd and should be addressed. Although in the past decades, women have been the center of beauty, during the present time, the portrayal of beauty is no longer limited to females only. The vision of beauty applies to both male and female teenagers, young adults and adults. Based on what you own, dress like, and even the way you act determines if you are considered beautiful by the media. How Does Morgan Use Propaganda In Fast Fashion Faux fur that slips through the fingers, eye catching sequins, a crisp, clean coat that exudes an air of professionalism around those who don it. Faces streaked with grime and sweat, mountains of fabric scraps, and large industrial complexes shrouded in plumes of smoke and pollution. By exploiting footage capturing such evocative imagery, Andrew Morgan illustrates in their documentary film, The True Cost , that these stark contrasts are simply two sides of the same coin for an industry that willingly cuts corners at its workers expense in order to snatch up every last coin. One such example couples quotes from Morgan s interview with Dr. Tim Kasser of Nox College with a montage of advertisement snippets and clips of major shopping hubs lined with crowds of consumers and large TV screens broadcasting even more advertisements and commercial. According to the acting school stop website, Chekhov s views on the job of the actor was not to imitate life, but rather to interpret it, to bring out its hidden meaning to the audience. For this, they must be able to act with ease, bring form and beauty to their creative expressions, and see the big picture so they can convey it in their performance, (Michael). This site goes on to discuss the things that his Method consists of. Discussed first is the idea of allowing the body to be trained to be receptive so that it can convey the inner life and emotions of a character to the audience. Chekhov thought that method acting was very unhealthy for the actor and stunted creativity and inspiration for a character. He instead wanted actors to get into the mindset of the character and learn to understand why they do what they do through analysis. He encouraged students to go into the world and watch real people interacting with each other and with the world around them to draw inspiration for themselves. His method consists of a lot of inner analysis, meaning using your brain and your own creativity and imagination to explore the characters reality. It also suggests that an actor should learn to imagine their environment and its atmosphere/ conditions to better understand the physicalizations of the character. It follows Katniss Everdeen as she takes the place of her younger sister in the Hunger Games Tournaments. The tournament consists of 24 contestants who are forced into a cosmic arena to fight until only one survives. The Hunger Games exhibits four authority types; charismatic, legal rational. Violent scenes and events assemble this post civil war novel to unravel a twisted and somewhat unexpected climax. The climax is not the only purpose that the violence serves, however. These implicitly gruesome scenes fulfill foreshadowing, emphasize existing concepts, acknowledge seemingly irrelevant events, and present themes. From the first pages of the book, John Steinbeck describes Lennie as huge and tremendously strong. The goal of this protest was to unite as immigrants and show what kind of hit the economy and labor force would take if immigrants weren t there to fuel it. This has taken place twice in recent history, once on May 1, 2006 and recently on February 21, 2017. One could argue whether they are successful in their efforts to show how important immigration is to the American economy. This means that based on population immigrants are more involved in the workforce than natives themselves. With trump getting elected to Presidency, and his views on immigration control and it being viewed as discrimination, one could say that he is just putting fuel on the flame. Consequences Of Statistical Inferences Providing A Result Consequences of statistical inferences providing a result rather than an answer could include researchers incorrectly applying related management implications to their studies, when in reality they are applying a treatment that was not correctly interpreted. This could result in the new study producing a non significant result when a biologically significant result should have been detected. Researchers desperate for a significant P value may claim an observation that was not present in the study, or perform researchers degrees of freedom, which is defined as decision making as researchers conduct the study, and not beforehand. b. Truth cannot be derived from a single study; it must be repeated to increase the precision of the study and therefore the strength of inference made about the results. Often, using the same sample and similar methods will not procure similar results, and therefore a consensus of studies should be provided to make a general claim. Studies that truly follow the scientific method and include randomization and repeatability will be closer to discovering the truth than other studies. c. The Pacific Railroads were founded when the Civil War was in progress. Until the war was over, the transcontinental railroad was a giant enterprise stalled by much bickering between a reluctant Congress and the Army, who had clamored for it (Cooke 254). If it had been left to the government, it would have taken another twenty years to complete the transcontinental railroad. However, it was a commercial venture, and it was fortunately fed by the adrenaline of competition. There were two railroad companies building the transcontinental railroad, the Union Pacific from the East, and the Central Pacific from the West. The two companies struggled to beat each other in slamming down a record mileage of track. At first, Congress avidly pursued the project and they had stipulated that the Central Pacific should stop when it reached the California Border (Congress was full of Easterners). From the time she is born to her reproductive system evolving, getting her first menstrual cycle and having to worry about getting sexually related dieses. A woman s body is constantly adjusting and adapting as it grows. Through all the years of science most of the female body and how it works is still unknown today. The female body is a beautiful mystery. The female reproductive system consists of both external and internal genitals. Of all the parts that make up the reproductive system the main two parts are the uterus, which holds and develops the fetus and the ovaries, which are two cavities that hold the woman s eggs. The ovaries can produce and hold anywhere from 40,000 eggs to 400,000 eggs each. The body then begins a process called ovulation at which the ovary releases an egg through what are called fallopian tubes or canals into the uterus. The egg then attaches to the uterus lining called the endometrium, which nourishes the egg during and through pregnancy. While the egg makes its journey through the fallopian tubes it can either be fertilized by the male sperm or not. If the egg does not get fertilized then it is expelled through the vagina in a process called menstruation. The vagina is a hollow, tunnel like structure of the female internal genitalia whose reproductive functions are to receive the penis and its ejaculate, serve as a route of exit for the newborn, and provide an exit for ... Answering the why question provides motivation for staffers expected to promote the change. It prepares you to answer critics and there will be critics. It give confidence to staffers recruited into roles with stipends. If you re ready to do the groundwork, consider the following five reasons nonprofits start paying stipends (and one reason to not start): The nonprofit will fulfill its mission and vision more effectively by starting stipends. This by itself is not sufficient reason to start stipends. However, it is a prerequisite. The strategy of only volunteer staff no longer gets the job done. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Leadership has tried every imaginable form of training and team building and reorganizing. Yet no growth. This is a time to consider providing stipends. Stipends are part of a plan to change organizational culture. There are organizations where being a nonprofit equates with being nonprofessional. In such nonprofits it is common to hear people say, We re just a nonprofit. One step (and I mean just one step) in elevating how members see the professionalism of their organization is starting stipends. Stipends are part of a new leader development process. When leading nonprofits I m especially gratified by working with leaders we internally developed. One widespread development process moves people from organizational members to volunteer staff to stipend staff to paid staff. Stipends are a transitional step in starting to pay salaries. Providing stipends before offering salaries gives nonprofits practical experience in handling payroll, taxes, etc. It also buys the nonprofit time to develop so it can better support offering salaries. • 30. Outlasting the SARS Epidemic Introduction When speaking of epidemics, the memories which come to mind are different for different people; for those who lived in Hong Kong in 2002 2003, images that spring up would almost invariably be of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, the epidemic known to man as SARS in short. Sharing with us the three letter acronym (SAR) which was given to us by our leaders in China, this ordeal has left its mark on our city in more ways than one. It had caused a widespread wave of mysophobia and health consciousness among the Hong Kong people, which outlasted the SARS epidemic but is probably slowly waning. It has also raised the awareness of the government of the importance of the control of infectious diseases, both in the community and in the clinical setting. Most importantly, SARS showed us what works and what needs improving in terms of infection control in the event of a major epidemic. Originally starting in November 2002 in Guangdong Province of China, the SARS coronavirus has since infected as many as 8422 persons worldwide, with a total of 1755 patients infected, among which 300 unfortunately succumbed to this disease. (1) Apart from being a major epidemic in the medical history of Hong Kong and a health threat of global concern, another aspect of SARS worth noting is the occurrence of nosocomial outbreaks. SARS was the cause of nosocomial outbreaks in Canada, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore. (2) The impact of nosocomial outbreak in an epidemic such as SARS ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through each story he picks a specific aspect of the Italian imperfect to poke fun at and highlight the ridiculousness or hypocrisy of. One topic he often highlights is religion and how arbitrary it was at this time in Italy, especially during the time of the black plague. Two of these stories that discuss religion are the First Day First story and the Third Day First Story. These two stories focus on religion and the falsely perfect smoke screen that hides the naivety and hypocrisy in their holiest of places and people. The priest Ser Cepparello spoke to was insane for believing that any man at the time almost never sinned and was, as much a virgin today as when [he] came forth from [his] mama s body (Boccaccio 23). Masetto, on the other hand knew exactly what he was doing when he went to the convent to garden, but at the same time, the nuns could have chosen not to break their vow and to stay pure and married to God instead of giving in and having unsolicited (to them at least) sex with him. Cognitive Dissonance Theory Essay The theory of Cognitive Dissonance states that when individuals are presented with information that implies we act in a way that contradicts our moral standards, we experience discomfort (Aronson, Wilson, and Akert, 1998, P. 191). This is considered Cognitive Dissonance, A psychological term used to describe mental conflict that occurs when beliefs or assumptions are contradicted by new information; arouses unease or tension; relieved by one of several defensive maneuvers: rejecting, explaining away, or avoiding new information; persuading self that no conflict really exists; reconciling differences; or resorting to any other defensive means of preserving stability or order in conception of world and of ... The task consisted in placing a large number of spools on pegs on a board, turn each spool a quarter turn, take the spool off the pegs and then put them back on. The subject s attitudes toward this task were negative. The participants were then asked to lie about the task to another person. This person was actually an assistant in the study. The lie was to try to convince the assistant that the task was actually interesting and fun. The participants were either given one dollar or twenty dollars for lying about the task. The experimenters found that those who lied and received the one dollar experienced the greatest dissonance, and they were more motivated to seek cognitive constancy than the participants who received twenty dollars. Those who received the one dollar reported to have enjoyed the task more than those who received the twenty dollars. There was an inconsistency between the attitudes of the participants and the behavior. The participants who received twenty dollars just wanted the money. The larger amount of money provided external justification for the behavior. There was no dissonance, and the participants did not need to change their attitudes. For the subjects who received only one dollar there was less external justification, and more dissonance. They reduced their dissonance by changing their attitudes toward the task. The ... If the population is on the rise, that would be a positive indication. Basically showing that the area is growing and that shows a good sign for investing. This information costs $1,500. Third is a study that investigates Coors market share estimates for 2000 through 2005. This looks into the number of gallons of the brand that are consumed locally and nationally. This is important because it shows if anyone in the area is already consuming the product. If people are already consuming the product it could be a good investment because you already have a market established. But where would the Beatles be without their drummer Ringo Star. The real human drummer was replaced with electronic computer machines during the eighties and nineties for a while, but music fans realized that this was not as good as the sound of a real talented drummer. The drummer does not just support the band they hold it up and push the forward. Robert Plant, the lead singer of Led Zeppelin was very fond of his drummer, John Bonham, who was one of the best drummers out there during his time and even today. It takes so much patience and practice to become a good enough drummer to even be in a band. It is also imperative to know how much work goes into becoming the drummer because some fans may view the drummer as just the guy or girl in the background where they need to realize how a band cannot be a band without the drummer. Dusang English 3 AP 26 April 2015 Protecting the Innocence; An Overview of The Catcher in the Rye During the nineteen fifties, as the population of the United States hurdled in a whirlpool of amiss, a writer sought to conserve innocence as teenagers move into adulthood. The change from their teenage years to adulthood made them question religion, friendships, and fate. J. D. Salinger saw this as a potential pitfall for teens; therefore, he adopts a unique writing style to which they can relate to. Sol and Miriam Salinger s son, Jerome David Salinger, was born on January 1st, 1919 in New York ( Salinger ). Supported by her Jewish husband, a successful meat and cheese importer, Miriam was able to raise Salinger and his two older siblings in the fashionable apartment district of upper Manhattan (French). In 1934 Salinger attended Valley Forge Military academy, where he grasped literature and began writing short stories (French). In spite of later being drafted to be in the military during World War II, Salinger wrote numerous works which inspired the lives of countless Americans. Through his use of point of view, characterization, and symbolism, Salinger aims towards conserving teenagers innocence as they move into adulthood in The Catcher in the Rye. Holden, the teenage protagonist of the novel, experiences an ongoing battle with the adult world and the cruelty associated with it.
