The Modern Concept Of Lean Management
The modern concept of lean management as used today can be traced back to the Toyota Production
System (TPS). The manufacturing philosophy was pioneered by Japanese engineers to emphasize the
minimization of waste and focus on doing it right the first time (Davis and Heineke, 2005). Engineers
knew that waste was something that customers were not willing to pay for thus they should try and
eliminate it. This led to the discovery that inventory is essentially waste. Keeping parts and products
in stock adds no value to a company, and should be eliminated. Although lean production began in
Japan, it now has been successfully implemented across the globe (Agus and Hajinoor, 2012). The
integrated activity, know as lean production in supply chain management, is designed to achieve high
volume flexible production using very minimal inventories of raw materials. This is based on the idea
that nothing will be produced until it is need. The process is implemented throughout the supply chain
with the signal essentially moving backwards from the customer all the way back to raw materials.
Lean production is an entire new way of thinking which includes the integration of vision, culture, and
strategy to serve the customer with high quality, low cost, and short delivery times (Shook and
Womack, 2015). Lean production is generally described from two points of view, either from a
philosophical perspective related to guiding principles and overarching goals, or from the practical

What Is The Mexican Mafia Prison Gang La Familia
The California drug cartel investigation essentially revealed how rooted and connected gang members
are within their own gang, yet, shockingly, this article displays how separate gangs were able to unite
and form relationships with one another.
In generic terms, I guess some may say that gangs tend to keep to themselves (meaning they keep
relationships with only those associated with that gang), group of people with similar ideas and
visions, simply, just up to no good. Interaction with other gangs would merely be for retaliation
purposes, initiation purposes (having to kill a member of a rival gang or some random innocent
civilian). Gangs are exceptionally territorial and the fact that the Mexican Mafia prison gang and the

The Discovery of Radioactivity and its Effects Essay
During the 1800 s, the late 1800 s, scientist discovered radioactivity. The study of radio activity
became a phenomenon amongst scientist during this time period. With the discovery of new elements
polonium and radium by Marie and Pierre Curie, the use of radioactivity to probe the center of an
atom, provided the instructions of a nuclear weapon that will kill innocent Japanese, leaving there face
disfigured, and permanently changed. The majority of people know of the effect of radioactivity but
not how it was discovered and its close relation to physics.
The discovery of radioactivity can also be referred to the dawn of the nuclear age. Many scientist,
were interested in satisfying their curiosity and began to explore nature and the ... Show more content

Just like the other scientist before him, he performed experiments to satisfy his curiosity about
radioactivity. Rutherford first, bombarded gold foil in particles from a radioactive source. Rutherford
saw that some of the particles seeming through the gold foil. Rutherford concluded that matter was
made up of empty space, but there was also a small dense portion of matter that deflected the particles.
He defined this dense area as being a nucleus. Through this finding, we were able to find discoveries
that lead to the discovery of radioactivity. Some people argue that radioactivity should not be used at
all mainly because it harms people and fatal, while others say that it should be used for weapons in a
war. From the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945 the effect of radioactivity waves are clear.
The effects of radioactivity are not always through a nuclear bomb. Radioactive waves are transmitted
through the sun and cosmic radiation. This simply means that people at higher elevations such as the
Rocky Mountains and the Colorado mountains are more expose to radioactive waves compared to
people that live on or at sea level. Radioactive waves are also transmitted through some fabricated
technology, soil, and rocks. The majority of people pose the question why do doctors or nurses where
aprons when giving an x ray. This is to protect them from radioactive waves. Nurses give countless
numbers of x rays a day. While you

The Negative Effects of Oil Spills Have on Nigeria, A letter
Dear President
My name is John Doe. I am writing this letter to inform you about the negative effects in Nigeria oil
spills have on its people and the environment around them. Oil spills pollute the water, killing animals
and plant life that inhabit the area around the spill. It is important that this problem is to be looked at
and solved. Nigeria s Niger Delta is one of the most oil polluted places on the planet with more than
6,800 recorded oil spills. Millions of barrels of oil were spilled into the Niger Delta.. Some people
inhabit the land around it. The water is there main resource to use. They use it for irrigation, drinking,
and bathing. They use the water for their everyday needs. The water is too polluted for them to drink
anymore and they can t use the water for irrigation because it is killing all of their crops. Multiple
people have suffered from illnesses from drinking the oil polluted water. Cleanups don t clean the land
very well even though they are supposed to clean deep into the ground. A percent of Nigerian
mangrove ecosystems have been destroyed out by oil. The known effects of oil on mangroves are
making the soil into acid, stop cellular respiration, and they do not let the roots get oxygen. The loss of
mangrove forests does not only decrease the life of plants and animals. They also affect humans. The
indigenous people living in the affected areas highly value these systems. The local people by the

Psychoactive Drug Addiction
A narrow definition of the term addiction refers to habitual psychological and physiological
dependence on a substance beyond one s voluntary control. Terms such as workaholic, sex addict, and
computer junkie arose to describe behaviors that have features in common with alcoholism and other
substance addictions. Substance addiction is a multi pronged system in which lifestyle has a role but
the biology of a person s body is a major factor. These substances, which are called psychoactive
drugs, are what people become addicted to and are described as chemicals that affect mental processes
and behavior by temporarily changing perception and awareness. There are many different theories
about what addiction is and why it happens but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once GAMA is attach to the receptor sites on the protein neurons then the channel is opened and the
chloride flow freely. Allowing these negatively charged chloride ions to flow into cells causes neurons
to become less active and pulse less therefore the brain is sending and receiving fewer
neurotransmitters (McKim 158). As talked about earlier, different drugs influence each of these
neurotransmitters differently. Each psychoactive drug has different effects on the body and different
uses. The term psychoactive describes a substance that affects the central nervous system (the brain
and spinal cord), producing changes in a person s mental activity or behavior. Psychoactive drugs may
affect the way an individual thinks, behaves, and analyzes. Many popular and widely used substances
are psychoactive such as alcohol. Many Doctors prescribe psychoactive drugs for different reasons.
Among the most important medical uses are as anesthesia for surgery and as analgesics (painkillers).
Dangerous psychoactive drugs are believed to have little or no medical benefit, so are used illegally
for recreational purposes including altering consciousness, improving performance, and improving
mood. When drugs are used for these purposes it can eventually lead to addiction.
There are 4 main categories which all psychoactive drugs fall under. These categories consist of the
following hallucinogens, stimulants, depressants, and opiates. Hallucinogens can cause people to

Terror Henry Stanley Morton
Henry Stanley Morton Terror In the first chapter of the book, they give a brief description of one of
the main characters, Henry Morton Stanley. The man with many different names worked as a
journalist and was a soldier on both sides of the civil war. He was then employed by King Leopold
and was sent to explore the Congo and help him to develop it to open it up to trade (he was sent first to
find Livingstone then develop the Congo). While many people may say that he was a hero (since most
explorers were classified as heroes do to their bold explorations), he still did many cruel and terrifying
things in Africa. Yet, he never really faced any consequences for his actions. To start off, on page 30

Figurative Language In The Treasure Of Lemon Brown
Ellen Hunnicutt once said . . . figurative language adds pizzazz. It raise work above the plain, the dull,
the ordinary. This quote explains how using figurative language helps create a more interesting and
useful way of expressing a tone of a character or event.Figurative language is a uses of words,
phrases, and sentences to help to make the characters and story line come more to live in the reader s
mind. Some examples of Figurative languages are similes, metaphors, hyperbole, personification,
onomatopoeia, and many more. Figurative language help the reader see tone and mood in each of the
example of figurative language because the reader can see or image the event or character in their
mind. In a story, poem, or any form of writing, figurative language is extremely important to a reader
because if a sentence didn t have figurative language the reader may not find the story or poem
interesting or even find it confusing and difficult to understand. In addition the use of figurative
language is crucial when an author is writing. In the stories The Treasure of Lemon Brown by Walter
Dean Myers and The Pigman, By Paul Zindel, the authors used Figurative language to develop the
tone of their stories so that that the reader can visualize it in their mind.
In the stories The Treasure of Lemon Brown by Walter Dean Myers, the author uses figurative
language to help the reader understand the tone of the story. The figurative language used in this
sentence is personification to show how the setting. In this event A boy named Grey Ridley was
walking down a street and saw the leafs blowing, Gusts of wind made bits of paper dance between the
papers cars . In other words this shows us that this street may be dirty, this may not be a good
environment, and how bits of paper dancing around is a result of wind so it must be a cold fall
weather. In addition later in the story Walter uses personification again to descriptive the mood. Grey
and Lemon Brown are in a abandoned house and both of them hear a car pass by, A car passed, its tires
hissing over the wet street and it s red tails lights glowing in the darkness. The intention of the author
was to help create the intense, creepy, and spooky mood for the reader. In

Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux Essay
Jean Baptiste Carpeaux
1827 1875
The son and grandson of stonemasons, Jean Baptiste Carpeaux was born in 1827 in Valenciennes and
moved to Paris at the age of eleven. Beginning in the early 1840s he studied at the Petite Ecole, the
state school for training in the applied arts, formally called the Ecole Gratuite de Dessin, before
entering the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1844, where he changed masters repeatedly, oscillating between
typical student ambition (optimal credentials for the Prix de Rome) and his interest in more liberal
approaches. Carpeaux moved from Ecole painter Abel de Pujol (1785 1861), to the independent
sculptor François Rude, and finally to the prestigious Ecole sculptor Francisque Joseph Duret (1804
1865). After winning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He entered the imperial circle in 1864 as artistic tutor to the Prince Imperial, and executed the boy s
bust and full scale portrait statue for the prince s parents (both mid 1860s, marble; Musée d Orsay,
Paris). He also received some of the most significant monumental commissions of the period: the
architectural decoration of the Pavillon de Flore of the Palais du Louvre (1863 1866, Imperial France
Enlightening the World and the Triumph of Flora); and The Dance (1865 1869) for the facade of the
Paris Opéra. His native Valenciennes commissioned several public projects between 1860 and 1884,
including a monument to another of its native artists, Antoine Watteau (1684 1721).
This extraordinary activity was interrupted by the upheavals after the fall of the Second Empire and by
Carpeaux s increasing frailty with cancer. He executed some smaller figures and portraits upon
commission and completed his monumental projects in Paris (1868 1874, Observatory Fountain,
Jardin du Luxembourg). He mainly focused on amassing income through commercial edition, hoping
to recoup his devastating financial losses from those projects and from the war. Estranged from his
family, Carpeaux spent the last two years of his life traveling, in the care of patrons, and in clinics. He
died in 1875.
An ambitious entrepreneur even as an Ecole student a flagrant violation of the academic policy
forbidding commerce Carpeaux produced serial works throughout his career.

Compare and Contrast University and Warren Pryor

Why is education important to society? Would one be able to read without a successful teacher
teaching one how to read? Education is a key that holds the ability to open many doors doors which
open into vast rooms of knowledge, love, experience, discovery, and dreams. Education is an essential
to human living and a fulfilling life, but what happens when the path one takes is not the choice that

Secondly, the characters possess different views regarding the effects of education. In University , the
protagonist believes that he has become more educated compared to his parents, while in Warren

young bear inside his teller s cage . His job as a bank teller restricts him from what he really wishes to

Warren witnessed him in his new job, they blushed with pride. They marveled... He was saved from
their thistle strewn farm and its red dirt . Warren s parents were completely overwhelmed with joy at
their son s success in life, but were unaware of the fact that Warren was actually unsatisfied with his
current lifestyle. The parents are not as concerned if Warren becomes distant from them due to the
sacrifices that they have made to give Warren education. In contrast, the protagonist s parents in

Open City by Teju Cole
Teju Cole s phenomenally written original novel majorly takes place in New York City. Cole character

Cole is a Nigerian American. He was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria and came to the United States
in 1992 at the age of seventeen. Cole is also well educated and is a graduate student at Columbia
University. I found it insightful how in the novel Cole met several various types of people, including
other immigrants. He met and shared stories with a Haitian shoe shiner, at work in Penn Station; a
Liberian, imprisoned for over two years in a dentition center in Queens; and a Moroccan student
working at an Internet café. I enjoyed the fact that the narrator was well stocked minded. He touched
on the topics of art, music, and interesting books. He had a very eclectic set of interest. Another aspect
that attracted me to novel was they way it was written. Although the book did have separate chapters,
the way that it is written make the novel flow as if it was one big paragraph. There are moments in the
story where characters converse but speech is not noted by quotation marks or paragraph breaks. This
is a type of writing that even the most experience authors fail to accomplish, but Cole made it seem so
effortless. Such a style of literature is bound to keep readers interested. If felt as if the reader was
reading a diary versus a novel. Included in the novel includes forms of

Crumple Zones Science
Introduction Scientists have made a big impact in car safety by using the role of science. They have
created many ways of increasing the possibility to survive a crash, by testing real car crashes and
simulated car crashes. In this one world essay, I m going to talk about how scientists have developed
crumple zones and have made them work against car crashes. Crumple zones Crumple zones, is an
area in the vehicle, that is designed to absorb the energy of the impact when crushing, preventing it
from being transmitted to the passengers inside the car. Scientists are still working on many factors
that need to be worked on in a crash. For example; racecars will have more severe impacts than
streetcars. Crumple zones are no the same for every car. The car varies on size and weight, so
designers have to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The force always is based on the speed and mass of the car, and the speed and mass of whatever the
vehicle hits. What crumple zones do is that they reduce the force of the crush, so the force doesn t
reach to the passengers. When the car crashes into a stationary object, some force is transferred to the
object. ...... Crumple zones and other parts of the car, are built with special materials inside, that are
designed to be damaged and broken. Crumple zones take the most force of the crash as possible, so

Influence of the Western War on Current US Action
How western war influence current US action Afghanistan Iraq
Introduction
Cambridge Illustrated History of Warfare: The Triumph of the West published in 1995, edited by
Geoffrey Parker has explained a number of factors that have played a part in the dominance of the
western way of war. The western way included in here is more about the dominance of the western
culture or the European culture in wars as compared to the other factors that may include technology
or finance. Five main foundations according to Parker can define the western way of war. These
factors include being superior in military and war based technology, superior military training and
discipline, increased reliance on military theory, an increased competition between European states
that lead to increased military innovation and lastly, military innovation by adoption of new and better
technology (Parker, 2005, p. 67).
The five foundations of western war have helped US in gaining victory over countries like Iraq and
Afghanistan. The main aim of the paper will be to highlight how these five main factors play
important roles in the dominance of a country over another during a war. How the countries like Iraq
and Afghanistan are failing against the more powerful US army based on Parker s five foundations of
a western war will be considered in the paper.
These days one of the most important ongoing wars includes war against terrorism initiated by US
against the militants in Iraq and Afghanistan. One

1950 s DBQ The 1950s is considered to be the model decade of America. Families were close,
children respected their elders, workers worked hard to provide for their families who grew up in nice
neighborhoods, and the economy was booming. The forced conformity, neglect of the poor, and
segregation are often overlooked when talking about the decade as they were during the time period.
The 1950s were a prodigious time period for family life but not for the individual or societal ethics.
The 50s boasted the archetype for the model family. As document H exemplifies, suburban families,

These types of articles forced women to behave in a way that lived up to a standard set by white
patriarchs. Once these women edited their appearances to stand out to a man and learned to be an
exceptional wife, they often became bored with their lives of sitting around the house because they
were not allowed to go out into the world. Document M takes an excerpt from a doctor s research on
why so many women came in with bored looks on their faces asking what was wrong with them.
Instead of the doctors telling them to go out and enjoy themselves they often prescribed tranquilizers.
These women would wake up and pop a tranquilizer, making them not care that they felt like they did
not want to live like that another day. Problems like those were often caused by society s iniquitous
codes for life.
The insecurities of the individual were caused by the poor societal ethics of the time. Document B
shows this where society told women that they had to be beautiful and since no one was born
beautiful, they needed to buy products to alter their appearances. This was an example of social
conformity, which was another poor ethic of the time. And the people in the houses all went to the
university, where they were put in boxes and they all came out the same This excerpt from document
G, a popular folk song of the era, Little Boxes , tried to bring forth the problem with the conformity
issue. Another problem with society was the Red Scare brought upon by Joseph

Cultural Impact On Tourism
Marketing teams have developed the dream vacation for just about everyone, whether your interests
lie in adventure travel, cruising, or wine tasting, your imagination and perhaps your budget is pretty
much your only limitation. Alongside this ever increasing number of vacation destinations, a large
body of research on the tourist machine also grows. Over time, the focus of tourism research has
shifted somewhat from the basic sort of anthropological or sociological questions such as why do
people choose the destinations they do and how do the natives of these tourist destinations feel about
their guests to more of an environmental and cultural impact approach. The impacts commoditization
on tourism. Commoditization, in terms of tourism, is the packaging and sale of an idea or story. What I
mean by that is that what is being turned into a commodity is an experience, not a tangible product.
For example, Commoditization of the past is the sale of tradition and/or history. Commoditization of
culture is the sale of tradition and/or ritual. Many people have written about the impact that tourists
attention to a community s ethnic identity has on that culture and have found that long lost traditions
are being revived and even new staged traditions are being dreamt up in order to comply with the
tourists growing demand for authentic cultures. When researching the contrasting strategies Denmark
and Singapore have taken in tourism, coined three terms to describe

Nina Simone Contributions
The 1960s marked a period of social unrest and frustration over civil liberties for black Americans.
The dominant figures of the Civil Rights movement were often male political and social leaders such
as Malcolm X or Martin Luther King Jr. However, during this period music became an inseparable
part of the Civil Rights movement. The civil rights and protest music had a remarkable influence on
the freedom movements by spreading the political and social messages rooted in the movement.
Consequently, musical artists also became dominant sources of leadership and influence. Nina Simone
led an influential and successful life as a musical artist, especially during the civil rights movement.
Her music fused genres of classical, soul, rhythm and blues, and jazz to create a completely unique,
uncategorizable style of music. Her contralto voice and distinguished musical style made her easily
recognizable and popular to a diverse, global audience during the 60s and 70s. Although Simone is
often omitted from historical recounts of the civil rights movement, her songs are incredibly
significant to the turbulent times as they promoted a sense of black pride and projected the frustration
and anger over the oppression of black Americans, especially black women. Simone had dreams of
becoming a classical pianist which were never reached. Despite these unobtained goals, Simone was
able to become an eminent musical artist that always carried herself with the utmost honesty,
dedication, and

Analysis Of Toni Morrison s Song Of Solomon
Victoria Sirianni Ms. Thompson AP ELA 4 21 July 2015 Song of Solomon Producing the plot with a
vivid image and motive allowed Toni Morrison to incorporate numerous literary works to enhance the
allusions in the story. These specific allusions gave readers a more accurate understanding of certain
aspects of the book. As well as this, readers are capable of searching beyond just the surface of what
the words say. The common use of biblical references and myths, as well as other notations, provide a
more in depth and detailed analyzation throughout the entire novel. To start off, Song of Solomon s
title relates to the biblical book of the same name. This emphasizes that the novel addresses more of
an old aged theme. The bible based book focuses on a conversation between two lovers and Toni s
novel is a celebration of the success of earthly love. Morrison also gives her characters biblical names
in order to match them with the well known figures. These characters not only obtain their original
history, but the history that their name carries in the Bible, as well. For example, the biblical character,
Hagar, is Sarah s handmaiden, who bears Sarah s husband a son and is then banished from his sight.
Similar to the previous one mentioned, Morrison s character is often used by Milkman. He takes
advantage of everything she has to offer and uses it for his own selfish benefits. He seems to regret

Virtual Reality Therapy ( Vrt ) And Hypnosis
Few experiences are more agonizing than the pain accompanying severe burn injuries. Virtual reality
therapy (VRT) and hypnosis are two convincing and fascinating treatments for the procedural pain
experienced by burn patients. The patients that are hospitalised due to these injuries undergo routine
wound care procedures cleansing and removing dead tissue to prevent infection that are so
excruciating hat even the use of aggressive analgesics (opioids) cannot control the pain (Rd 1/Rd 3). It
is at times like these that patients need the most pain relief, thus prevention of trauma during the
wound care procedure is essential to minimising procedural pain.
The perception of pain involves a strong psychological component (). Depending on what the patient
is thinking, an incoming pain signal can be perceived as more or less painful, psychological factors
can also impact the amount of pain signals allowed to enter the brain (Rd 3). This is where virtual
reality and hypnosis come in. VRT makes the patient imagine going into and engaging with the virtual
world. The patient s attention then, is focused in the virtual world rather than his wounds. Due to this
lack of attention, and less time spent thinking about the pain there is a decrease in pain felt during the
wound care procedure (Rd 2). Hypnosis is characterised by deep relaxation and suggestibility and is
useful in minimising experience of pain (cite book). It works by inducing analgesia and then giving

The Success Of Dubai s Brand Essay
A small desert village that resides next to the Arabian Gulf, Dubai has established its footprint in the
global world competing with renowned cities such as London, New York, Frankfort, and Hong Kong.
In a span of 10 years, Dubai had built the tallest building in the world, the first luxurious seven star
hotel in the world, and the largest man made island and is building more amazing projects.
Furthermore, Emirates Airlines became one of the top brands in the world with its outstanding quality
of services and its vast and new fleet of planes flying over 40 million passengers to every possible
destination in the world. The success of Dubai s brand can be attributed to its astonishing leader
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Through his vision and his leadership style, Dubai
emerged from a depleting oil reserves state, withstood the economic recessions in 2001 and 2008 and
excelled globally by completing their massive projects and challenging many more complex projects
such as the Mall of the World. Which is going to be the biggest mall in the globe, and Expo 2020 as

Beach Erosion Essay
In December 2013, a massive tidal surge flooded 1,400 homes along the east coast of the U.K., which
has managed to destroy and tumble some of these houses into the Atlantic Ocean. Over the next
century, it is estimated that estates worth over 1 billion pounds will be lost due to the effects of coastal
erosion. And within the next 20 years, over 800 estates will be lost. Coastal erosion is the reduction of
material attached to the coastline by various natural or man led activities; coastal erosion leads to the
landward retreat of the coast. Coastal erosion endangers coastal civilisations livelihood and source of
income thus, defending it through efficient means is important as it stabilises the lives of the people

The groyne field was placed in conjunction with beach nourishment projects to stabilise a shore that
was eroding at a gradual rate before the groynes were built. Between 1929 and 1977, the shoreline
remained relatively stable. However, after 1977, the groynes became increasingly ineffective, and the
shoreline began eroding at much higher rates due to lack of maintenance. Today, the groynes are in
poor shape and have occasionally been flanked at their landward ends(?). Several massive winter
storms have since induced severe beach erosion and threatened to reverse the achievements of the
protective measures put into place in Bethany Beach. Furthermore, a 147 year record of shoreline
positions from 1850 1997 was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the groyne field at Bethany Beach
and assess its impact on the adjacent beaches. The results indicate that the combination of the groyne
field and beach fill have effectively stabilised the beach for nearly 50 years. However, the
deterioration of the groynes and a series of large winter storms has resulted in increased beach erosion
over the last 20 years in spite of multiple large scale beach nourishment projects. This analysis also
indicates that the combination of methods would fail without the groynes receiving constant and
efficient maintenance, regardless of whether the beach nourishment projects are continued or not.

Dna Marker Research Paper
A DNA marker (size standard or a DNA ladder) is loaded into the first well of the gel. The fragments
in the marker are of a known length so it can be used to help approximate the size of the fragments in
the samples. The prepared DNA samples are then pipetted into the remaining wells of the gel. When
this is done the lid is placed on the electrophoresis tank making sure that the orientation of the gel and
positive and negative electrodes is correct. To separate the fragments, the electrical current is then
turned on so that the negatively charged DNA moves through the gel towards the positive side of the
gel. The distance the DNA has migrated in the gel can be judged visually by monitoring the migration
of the loading buffer dye. The electrical current is left on long enough to ensure that the DNA
fragments move far enough across the gel to separate them, but not so long that they run off the end of
the gel. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

What Does George Santayana Say About History And Human Nature
George Santayana s quote from the novel The Life of Reason, volume 1 explains about history and
human nature. If you do not learn from your mistakes from the past, you will make the same mistakes
again. Progress, far from consisting in change depends on retentiveness. This means in regards to
history that progress does not depend on change but more on the ability to retain from past experience.
When experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Also, In the first stage of life
the mind is frivolous and easily distracted, it misses progress by failing in consecutiveness and
persistence. This two quotes explains the human nature that if you don t learn from your past mistakes,

Theme Of Holy Water By Joan Didion
Bella DeLeon
Instructor Westmoreland
ENGL 1321 16
September 8, 2017 Holy Water Water is important to people who do not have it, and the same is true to
control, (Didion). The article, Holy Water by Joan Didion draws parallelism to the controlling or lack
of control of water by metaphorically comparing water to life. Analyzing the possibility of how people
are taking water for granted, especially where rainfall is extremely sparse, Didion touches on how
supply and demand of a natural resource is solely dependent on its availability and whether or not it is
immediately needed. Didion s use of tone, appealing to emotions, gathering the audience to develop a
trust, and providing a direct insight into her purpose allows the reader to recognize the importance
water has within the planet.
Didion s slight infatuation with water seems to be based on her own experiences in which she serves
as testimonial evidence. As it happens my own reverence for water has always taken the form of this
constant meditation upon where the water is, of an obsessive interest not in the politics of water but in
the waterworks themselves, in the movement of water through aqueducts and siphons and pumps and
forebays and afterbays and weirs and drains, in plumbing on the grand scale, (Didion). Therefore, her
thesis remains strong and reliable, providing a further understanding to the reason why water should
have importance to the world and to the individual. Additionally, drawing on the possible comparison
that maybe water is a reference to the life of a person can provide an idea that life is just as
uncontrollable when it is not being managed. Her tone exemplifies her certainty into how water
gathers from the world and the neglectful actions can cause hardship to society.
Water is not the same and the brilliance of water will never be from one direct location. The
comparison of water to the life of a person provides an idea that the uncontrollable nature of water
serves as a premise for life. According to the reference text in regard to premises, The joining of two
premises two statements taken to be true to produce a conclusion, a third statement, is a syllogism
(Barnet, Bedau and O Hara). Didion s use of a syllogism allows

H.G. Wells Time Machine and Its Relativity with the Victorian Era
Herbert George Wells was an English writer from the nineteenth century. He was born on September
the 21st 1866 in Bromley, Kent. He first wrote a book when he was eleven; although this was not
published it was a great achievement. He won a scholarship to the school of science, but he failed due
to his other interests such as history, journalism, sociology and writing. His dad was a pro cricketer
and a domestic servant. This may have had an influence on his work like in The Time Machine with
the class divisions. His support in socialism influenced his work especially The Time Machine as he
was a great supporter of Karl Marx. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is why Wells books were popular because they were the first daring science fiction books. He
was a fan of Charles Darwin which obviously influenced his books especially The Time Machine .
Darwin talks about how humans evolved from apes and the theory of evolution. In The Time Machine
the Eloi and the Morlocks evolved from humans. Many things from the Victorian era influenced Wells
writing The Time Machine including many theories that were around at the time. And now I shall
show how The Time Machine represents the Victorian era.
In chapter one Wells demonstrates class divisions by showing us the dinner party with the Time
Traveller and his guests. The Time Traveller is telling his guests about his tie machine and his theory
behind it. The conversation they have is quite complex Can a cube that does not last for any time at
all, have a real existence . This shows they are all highly educated. Wells illustrates us these dinner
guests not as for example Mr Jones but Medical Man or Psychologist . This illustrates us that all these
men at the dinner party were of the upper class. They are referred to by their profession to reinforce
their status. Ingenious Paradox and trick this shows they are also nearly all very sceptical because time
travel in the Victorian era is an anachronism. It s like having a teleporting machine nowadays. Also
people of the lower class did

The Power of Professional Learning Communities Essay
Benjamin Franklin said An investment in knowledge pays the best interest. Education opens the door
for everyone to excel in life. To become a strong nation, its people, especially children, must have a
good education so the nation can continue to excel and become stronger. Nevertheless, America is
suffering through an education crisis today. The current statistics show that the United States is falling
behind in education compared to other countries. The illiteracy rate is high, and the graduation rates
for inner city children are low. The causes of this crisis are everyday problems such as lack of interest
in school, poverty, and standardized testing. There are many solutions to the problem, but one
solution, Professional Learning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The United States also places 25th in math, 17th in science, and 14th in reading ( Best Education in
the World, 2012). Fourth Graders in the U.S. are 11th in Math in the Trends in International
Mathematics and Science Study ( U.S. education spending tops Global List, 2013.) Sixty six percent
of all fourth graders are not reading at grade level (Reese, Fredrick 2014). Fourteen percent of the
population, or 32 million adults, cannot read. Nineteen percent of high school graduates cannot read.
In less developed countries like Chile, Brazil, and Latina, children are increasing in academics three
times faster than American Students ( Best Education in the World, 2012). The problem in the
education system lies within the public schools, because the majority of students attend public
schools. In fact, only ten percent of children attend private schools (Jennings, 2013). USA Today said
Students in a handful of big city school districts have a less than 50 50 chance of graduating from high
school with their peers, and a few cities graduate far fewer than half each spring... (Toppo, 2006).
With these statistics in education, many people wonder why the United States is lagging, but one
major reason for the lagging is teaching methods.
The use of standardized test has been used for many years. Tests such as ACT, SAT, EOC, and

Thomas Edison Accomplishments
Genius is two percent inspiration and ninety eight percent perspiration, said by one of the most
ingenious inventors in American history. Thomas Alva Edison held more than 1,000 registered
trademarks and is best remembered for inventing the phonograph or jukebox/stereo turntable in 1877.
He also invented the first commercially successful electric light bulb two years later. Although Edison
did not invent the light bulb, he developed a durable fiber/thread that made its use practical.
Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio, which was a community that was
the largest wheat shipping center in the world other than Odessa,Russia. His family moved to Port
Huron, Michigan in 1854, which exceeded the commercial excellence of both Milan and Odessa. After
spending 12 weeks in the noisy one room schoolhouse with 38 other kids of two different ages,
Thomas overworked and his short tempered teacher finally became flustered with Thomas questioning
and seemingly self centered behavior. Thomas made no secret of his belief that the other kids brains
were scrambled noting that Thomas head was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is no question that Edison deserves a huge amount of credit for lighting up the world. Although,
this accomplishment was way less related to his particular discovery of an incandescent light bulb
(A.K.A the globe ball light bulb) than to his creation of the first genuinely safe and economically
practical system for generating and distributing light and power around the world. The majority of
historians usually associate Edison with the invention of the light bulb along with the other 1093
things he did indeed invent, using his bright, beautiful mind. The historians do practically ignore the
greater significance that he called his first model of a complete central power station , that was built in

Pablo Neruda Literary Devices
There are several Literary devices that Pablo Neruda utilizes within his poetry. These Literary devices
include the Use of Metaphors and Similes, along with the utilization of Imagery within almost every
Neruda poem. Overall these devices play a huge role on conveying what Neruda is attempting to
describe to per se a reader, so that they can feel or compare the action to common sensations received
by senses.
Similies are huge literary devices as they can be found in almost all of his poems. Similies and Imagry
help to convey the message that Neruda is writing. Similies convey a similarity within Neruda s
poetry, using words Like or As. These similies such as the ones found within Leaning into the

What Is Proactive Interference
Introduction
By the age of seven, reading is an activity many children are well accustomed to. With the amount of
time most individuals have been reading, this task is relatively easy. Yet, there are still instances in
which we are reading a novel, a magazine, or even a simple text message, and we simply cannot
manage to remember what we read. This is event is due to interference. Interference theory states that
there are two forms of interference that can hinder our ability to properly encode information into our
memory (Bergstrom 1892), proactive interference and retroactive interference. When reading,
however, visual interference can play a large part in disrupting out learning process.
In the experiment commonly known for the development ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A controlled process is a task which is new or unique to the person. It is serial, takes heavy demands
on attention, requires conscious efforts to direct attention towards the task and is slow. Whereas an
automatic process is a task which has already been learned. It can be parallel, makes no demands on
attention, does not need conscious direction of attention towards the task and is fast. This implies that
when we are presented with a word, the action of stating its color is a relatively new task compared to
the already learnt behavior to read just words. Therefore, reading is seen as the automatic process
which interferes with the slower controlled process of stating the color. With the alteration of the
original Stroop Effect experiment, the automaticity model is discredited due to the fact that instead of
stating the word the participant points at the observed color instead. This nonverbal response, pointing
at the color, is not believed to be an automatic process, thus the automaticity model is questioned
when researchers note an interference in the speed of processing in incongruently colored

The Naturalist Known as Theodore Dresier Essay
The Naturalist known as Theodore Dreiser
Throughout history there has been many great authors that have created even greater works, and some
people refer to these as classics. However, what truly makes an authors work a classic? The idea of a
classic implies something that has continuance and consistence, and which produces unity and
tradition, and transmits itself, and endures. A true classic, is an author who has expressed his thought,
and who has spoken to all in his own peculiar style (Hutchins). Theodore Dreiser is the epitome of this
very definition. Dreiser drew upon his upbringing, life experiences, and the situations of his family
members and transformed these collective experiences into his very first novel, Sister ... Show more

Much like many of his other themes and symbols, this one also came as a result of his experiences,
most notably his childhood. Before he was born, his father owned a mill that eventually burned down.
This event caused him to turn into a cynical, bitter man who abused and tortured his family mentally.
This led to Dreiser coming to the conclusion that man is a pawn in the hands of a blind or malevolent
fate (Warren 11). This idea of fate can be further explained as Dreiser accepting that no one can
change the future and whatever is meant to happen to them will happen, whether it be good or bad.
This quote shows him coming to grips with the idea of human suffering, which he later in life proves
to be true in his quest for achievement in the big industrial cities. Blind fate exists heavily in the Sister
Carrie and can be a positive or negative thing. For example, the main character Carrie becomes an
immensely successful person while trying simply because of fate (where she and others happen to be
at certain times). Another example is George Hurstwood who cheated on his wife and subsequently
abandoning her by having an affair with Carrie (Dreiser). Blind fate plays its hand here by eventually
leading to Hurstwood s suicide after being abandoned by Carrie, much like he abandoned his wife and
child. This is an example of blind fate simply because it was by chance that he met Carrie and
ultimately because of that same chance that

Loyalty In Macbeth
The Tragedy of Macbeth is a play by the famous playwright, William Shakespeare. William
Shakespeare s plays are known for his character s dramatic aspects and how they are portrayed in the
play towards the reader or onlooker. Macbeth illustrates importance of Kingship and Natural Order. In
Macbeth the notion of honor is of one s word and loyalty to one s superior, in this case the king, King
Duncan. Despite of this, Macbeth displays defective relationships that loyalty is essential to the
relationship. By killing his comrade and friend, Banquo, Macbeth shows that he is untrustworthy and
his egocentric mind. By killing his king and relative, Duncan, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth reveal their
ambitiousness toward the hierarchy. Upon hearing the report of Macbeth becoming the Thane of
Cawdor and the prophecy that he will become king, Lady Macbeth prays to the spirits, ...Come, you

Del Kathryn Barton Research Paper
Artist Investigation Possessions and Obsessions Del Kathryn Barton Due: 14th Friday, 2015 By
Amberley Sparkes Del Kathryn Barton was born to two teachers in 1972, Sydney, New South Wales.
She grew up on a hobby style goat farm, obsessed with drawing from a young age. Barton suffered a
cacophony of psychotic disorders, nothing of which doctors could officially diagnose. She escaped her
reality of mental instability by emerging herself in drawing and arts. Barton went through several
periods of self loathing and eating disorders, of which are reflected in many of Barton s pieces. Barton
explores ideas of femininity, exploring and understanding the female body and the stigmas associated
with children and sexual representations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This particular artwork could be interpreted as symbolic for identifying a future for sexual freedom of
women; women being able to discuss themselves sexually, accept who they are and their individual
beauty and the freedom to express female sexuality art, removing the stigma The woman, with her
glassy and impassive eyes, gives the impression of reflection to the audience. Her eyes are blue; her
pupils dark and the irises are fusion of pastel and mellow blues. The colour blue also has connotations;
either interpreted as a surreal and calming colour, or a miserable and saddening colour. The
combination of the reflective surface and the colour blue, seems to be a statement of contemplation on
the sad and disturbing mistreatment and abuse of female sexuality in contemporary art. The kitten also
has symbolic uses, adding to the message conveyed by Barton. Cats, historically are represented as
intuitive and independent. Freely expressing themselves and not relying on other for comfort. With the
kitten in Barton s image, desperately clawing at the woman s hand, and the woman holding the kitten
close to her chest, it signifies the urgent attempt for the woman, or women in general, to pertain to

Analysis Of The Book The Catcher Of The Rye By Quot....
The Catcher in the Rye, a novel written by J.D. Salinger, follows the short journey in which a teenage
boy is coming to terms with his encroaching adulthood. Holden, the main character, has been kicked
out of a private school for the third time. In New York, he is on the verge of a mental breakdown.
Holden is reluctant to act on the obvious solution of returning home and feels discombobulation
towards the consequences he might have to face. He reflects on the death of his brother and struggles
from loneliness because his brother was the only person he really had a connection with. He now has

his childish acts always get in the way of positive reactions from adult and ultimately his acceptance
as an equal. In this search for his right of passage into adulthood,Holden is constantly trying to keep
prove himself. Holden is 17 years old, and he is not really a child anymore and tries to gain validation
from strangers and himself by drinking and smoking. In the early chapters of the book Holden acts
immature, but as the journey progresses so does Holden. He comes to make rational decisions as his
trip goes on as demonstrated by Salinger when Holden calls Sally and asks her out on a real date; it is
considerably less callow than when he called Faith in the middle of the night in hopes of getting
drinks and then having sex. Holden starts to learn and grow into his age. Notice that Holden only
drinks in public and never in privacy. He looks to others for recognition that he can take alcohol like a

  • 2. The Modern Concept Of Lean Management The modern concept of lean management as used today can be traced back to the Toyota Production System (TPS). The manufacturing philosophy was pioneered by Japanese engineers to emphasize the minimization of waste and focus on doing it right the first time (Davis and Heineke, 2005). Engineers knew that waste was something that customers were not willing to pay for thus they should try and eliminate it. This led to the discovery that inventory is essentially waste. Keeping parts and products in stock adds no value to a company, and should be eliminated. Although lean production began in Japan, it now has been successfully implemented across the globe (Agus and Hajinoor, 2012). The integrated activity, know as lean production in supply chain management, is designed to achieve high volume flexible production using very minimal inventories of raw materials. This is based on the idea that nothing will be produced until it is need. The process is implemented throughout the supply chain with the signal essentially moving backwards from the customer all the way back to raw materials. Lean production is an entire new way of thinking which includes the integration of vision, culture, and strategy to serve the customer with high quality, low cost, and short delivery times (Shook and Womack, 2015). Lean production is generally described from two points of view, either from a philosophical perspective related to guiding principles and overarching goals, or from the practical ... What Is The Mexican Mafia Prison Gang La Familia The California drug cartel investigation essentially revealed how rooted and connected gang members are within their own gang, yet, shockingly, this article displays how separate gangs were able to unite and form relationships with one another. In generic terms, I guess some may say that gangs tend to keep to themselves (meaning they keep relationships with only those associated with that gang), group of people with similar ideas and visions, simply, just up to no good. Interaction with other gangs would merely be for retaliation purposes, initiation purposes (having to kill a member of a rival gang or some random innocent civilian). The study of radio activity became a phenomenon amongst scientist during this time period. With the discovery of new elements polonium and radium by Marie and Pierre Curie, the use of radioactivity to probe the center of an atom, provided the instructions of a nuclear weapon that will kill innocent Japanese, leaving there face disfigured, and permanently changed. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just like the other scientist before him, he performed experiments to satisfy his curiosity about radioactivity. Rutherford first, bombarded gold foil in particles from a radioactive source. Rutherford saw that some of the particles seeming through the gold foil. Rutherford concluded that matter was made up of empty space, but there was also a small dense portion of matter that deflected the particles. He defined this dense area as being a nucleus. Through this finding, we were able to find discoveries that lead to the discovery of radioactivity. Some people argue that radioactivity should not be used at all mainly because it harms people and fatal, while others say that it should be used for weapons in a war. From the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945 the effect of radioactivity waves are clear. The effects of radioactivity are not always through a nuclear bomb. Radioactive waves are transmitted through the sun and cosmic radiation. This simply means that people at higher elevations such as the Rocky Mountains and the Colorado mountains are more expose to radioactive waves compared to people that live on or at sea level. Radioactive waves are also transmitted through some fabricated technology, soil, and rocks. The majority of people pose the question why do doctors or nurses where aprons when giving an x ray. I found it insightful how in the novel Cole met several various types of people, including other immigrants. He met and shared stories with a Haitian shoe shiner, at work in Penn Station; a Liberian, imprisoned for over two years in a dentition center in Queens; and a Moroccan student working at an Internet café. I enjoyed the fact that the narrator was well stocked minded. He touched on the topics of art, music, and interesting books. He had a very eclectic set of interest. Another aspect that attracted me to novel was they way it was written. Although the book did have separate chapters, the way that it is written make the novel flow as if it was one big paragraph. There are moments in the story where characters converse but speech is not noted by quotation marks or paragraph breaks. This is a type of writing that even the most experience authors fail to accomplish, but Cole made it seem so effortless. Such a style of literature is bound to keep readers interested. My experience at flight school is finally done, and today I get to fly around beautiful Lake Havasu AZ alone. But, the plane had precautions for an emergency landing, so I knew Zander had to be alive. I looked around for the best landing conditions because my plane could come down at any moment. I flew about 8 Miles to the Lake Havasu National Wildlife Refuge, here there was a flat looking area where the sandbar once existed when the lake was here. I prepped the plane for an emergency landing and started my decent, I eased the back wheels down first, emitting a loud ear piercing squeak, as the plane started to sink down into the sand, causing the back wheels to drift. When the plane started to slow, I let the front wheel down onto the sand, slowly reaching my hand up to the emergency exit above, located on the ceiling in the cockpit. The film is about a man in the division of the police that involves the retirement of NEXUS 6 Replicants; this division is called the Blade Runner division. The film begins with a view in long shot of Los Angeles in 2019 as a dystopia. In the middle of the dark and crowded city, under the blackened sky and blanket upon blanket of rain, are several towers repetitively spewing flames into the dark beyond making the country made of city seem like hell at night. The darkness of the scenery highlights the masses of smoke that is in the air, from Holden smoking, the flying cars exhaust and the dense pollution of the ever burning power stations. The blades of the fan on the ceiling of Holden s smoky, dim lit office constantly remind you of the films name, Blade Runner as the blades spin from the buildings interior. The ease of the office wall breaking as the effect of Leon, a NEXUS 6 replicant, firing a gun at Holden and violently pushing him through the wall shows how brittle and poorly built the future is shown to be. They have created many ways of increasing the possibility to survive a crash, by testing real car crashes and simulated car crashes. In this one world essay, I m going to talk about how scientists have developed crumple zones and have made them work against car crashes. Crumple zones Crumple zones, is an area in the vehicle, that is designed to absorb the energy of the impact when crushing, preventing it from being transmitted to the passengers inside the car. Scientists are still working on many factors that need to be worked on in a crash. For example; racecars will have more severe impacts than streetcars. Crumple zones are no the same for every car. The force always is based on the speed and mass of the car, and the speed and mass of whatever the vehicle hits. What crumple zones do is that they reduce the force of the crush, so the force doesn t reach to the passengers. Crumple zones and other parts of the car, are built with special materials inside, that are designed to be damaged and broken. Crumple zones take the most force of the crash as possible, so the other parts of the car as well as the passengers, don t suffer the effects. Designers can t only worry about the impact and the absorption of kinetic energy when the car crashes; it has to also focus on other areas. If the whole car was made out of crumple zones, when the car crashes, the passengers will be thrown out . • 21. Influence of the Western War on Current US Action How western war influence current US action Afghanistan Iraq Introduction Cambridge Illustrated History of Warfare: The Triumph of the West published in 1995, edited by Geoffrey Parker has explained a number of factors that have played a part in the dominance of the western way of war. The western way included in here is more about the dominance of the western culture or the European culture in wars as compared to the other factors that may include technology or finance. Five main foundations according to Parker can define the western way of war. These factors include being superior in military and war based technology, superior military training and discipline, increased reliance on military theory, an increased competition between European states that lead to increased military innovation and lastly, military innovation by adoption of new and better technology (Parker, 2005, p. 67). The five foundations of western war have helped US in gaining victory over countries like Iraq and Afghanistan. The main aim of the paper will be to highlight how these five main factors play important roles in the dominance of a country over another during a war. How the countries like Iraq and Afghanistan are failing against the more powerful US army based on Parker s five foundations of a western war will be considered in the paper. Families were close, children respected their elders, workers worked hard to provide for their families who grew up in nice neighborhoods, and the economy was booming. The forced conformity, neglect of the poor, and segregation are often overlooked when talking about the decade as they were during the time period. Once these women edited their appearances to stand out to a man and learned to be an exceptional wife, they often became bored with their lives of sitting around the house because they were not allowed to go out into the world. Document M takes an excerpt from a doctor s research on why so many women came in with bored looks on their faces asking what was wrong with them. Instead of the doctors telling them to go out and enjoy themselves they often prescribed tranquilizers. These women would wake up and pop a tranquilizer, making them not care that they felt like they did not want to live like that another day. Problems like those were often caused by society s iniquitous codes for life. The insecurities of the individual were caused by the poor societal ethics of the time. Document B shows this where society told women that they had to be beautiful and since no one was born beautiful, they needed to buy products to alter their appearances. This was an example of social conformity, which was another poor ethic of the time. • 25. Nina Simone Contributions The 1960s marked a period of social unrest and frustration over civil liberties for black Americans. The dominant figures of the Civil Rights movement were often male political and social leaders such as Malcolm X or Martin Luther King Jr. However, during this period music became an inseparable part of the Civil Rights movement. The civil rights and protest music had a remarkable influence on the freedom movements by spreading the political and social messages rooted in the movement. Consequently, musical artists also became dominant sources of leadership and influence. Nina Simone led an influential and successful life as a musical artist, especially during the civil rights movement. Her music fused genres of classical, soul, rhythm and blues, and jazz to create a completely unique, uncategorizable style of music. Her contralto voice and distinguished musical style made her easily recognizable and popular to a diverse, global audience during the 60s and 70s. Although Simone is often omitted from historical recounts of the civil rights movement, her songs are incredibly significant to the turbulent times as they promoted a sense of black pride and projected the frustration and anger over the oppression of black Americans, especially black women. Simone had dreams of becoming a classical pianist which were never reached. Analysis Of Toni Morrison s Song Of Solomon Victoria Sirianni Ms. Thompson AP ELA 4 21 July 2015 Song of Solomon Producing the plot with a vivid image and motive allowed Toni Morrison to incorporate numerous literary works to enhance the allusions in the story. These specific allusions gave readers a more accurate understanding of certain aspects of the book. As well as this, readers are capable of searching beyond just the surface of what the words say. The common use of biblical references and myths, as well as other notations, provide a more in depth and detailed analyzation throughout the entire novel. To start off, Song of Solomon s title relates to the biblical book of the same name. This emphasizes that the novel addresses more of an old aged theme. The bible based book focuses on a conversation between two lovers and Toni s novel is a celebration of the success of earthly love. Morrison also gives her characters biblical names in order to match them with the well known figures. These characters not only obtain their original history, but the history that their name carries in the Bible, as well. For example, the biblical character, Hagar, is Sarah s handmaiden, who bears Sarah s husband a son and is then banished from his sight. Similar to the previous one mentioned, Morrison s character is often used by Milkman. He takes advantage of everything she has to offer and uses it for his own selfish benefits. Virtual reality therapy (VRT) and hypnosis are two convincing and fascinating treatments for the procedural pain experienced by burn patients. The patients that are hospitalised due to these injuries undergo routine wound care procedures cleansing and removing dead tissue to prevent infection that are so excruciating hat even the use of aggressive analgesics (opioids) cannot control the pain (Rd 1/Rd 3). It is at times like these that patients need the most pain relief, thus prevention of trauma during the wound care procedure is essential to minimising procedural pain. The perception of pain involves a strong psychological component (). Depending on what the patient is thinking, an incoming pain signal can be perceived as more or less painful, psychological factors can also impact the amount of pain signals allowed to enter the brain (Rd 3). This is where virtual reality and hypnosis come in. VRT makes the patient imagine going into and engaging with the virtual world. The patient s attention then, is focused in the virtual world rather than his wounds. Due to this lack of attention, and less time spent thinking about the pain there is a decrease in pain felt during the wound care procedure (Rd 2). Hypnosis is characterised by deep relaxation and suggestibility and is useful in minimising experience of pain (cite book). It works by inducing analgesia and then giving suggestions of ... • 39. Dna Marker Research Paper A DNA marker (size standard or a DNA ladder) is loaded into the first well of the gel. The fragments in the marker are of a known length so it can be used to help approximate the size of the fragments in the samples. The prepared DNA samples are then pipetted into the remaining wells of the gel. When this is done the lid is placed on the electrophoresis tank making sure that the orientation of the gel and positive and negative electrodes is correct. To separate the fragments, the electrical current is then turned on so that the negatively charged DNA moves through the gel towards the positive side of the gel. The distance the DNA has migrated in the gel can be judged visually by monitoring the migration of the loading buffer dye. The electrical current is left on long enough to ensure that the DNA fragments move far enough across the gel to separate them, but not so long that they run off the end of the gel. ... If you do not learn from your mistakes from the past, you will make the same mistakes again. Progress, far from consisting in change depends on retentiveness. This means in regards to history that progress does not depend on change but more on the ability to retain from past experience. When experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. • 42. Theme Of Holy Water By Joan Didion Bella DeLeon Instructor Westmoreland ENGL 1321 16 September 8, 2017 Holy Water Water is important to people who do not have it, and the same is true to control, (Didion). The article, Holy Water by Joan Didion draws parallelism to the controlling or lack of control of water by metaphorically comparing water to life. Analyzing the possibility of how people are taking water for granted, especially where rainfall is extremely sparse, Didion touches on how supply and demand of a natural resource is solely dependent on its availability and whether or not it is immediately needed. Didion s use of tone, appealing to emotions, gathering the audience to develop a trust, and providing a direct insight into her purpose allows the reader to recognize the importance water has within the planet. Didion s slight infatuation with water seems to be based on her own experiences in which she serves as testimonial evidence. As it happens my own reverence for water has always taken the form of this constant meditation upon where the water is, of an obsessive interest not in the politics of water but in the waterworks themselves, in the movement of water through aqueducts and siphons and pumps and forebays and afterbays and weirs and drains, in plumbing on the grand scale, (Didion). Therefore, her thesis remains strong and reliable, providing a further understanding to the reason why water should have importance to the world and to the individual. Additionally, drawing on the possible comparison that maybe water is a reference to the life of a person can provide an idea that life is just as uncontrollable when it is not being managed. Her tone exemplifies her certainty into how water gathers from the world and the neglectful actions can cause hardship to society. Water is not the same and the brilliance of water will never be from one direct location. The comparison of water to the life of a person provides an idea that the uncontrollable nature of water serves as a premise for life. According to the reference text in regard to premises, The joining of two premises two statements taken to be true to produce a conclusion, a third statement, is a syllogism (Barnet, Bedau and O Hara). • 47. What Is Proactive Interference Introduction By the age of seven, reading is an activity many children are well accustomed to. With the amount of time most individuals have been reading, this task is relatively easy. Yet, there are still instances in which we are reading a novel, a magazine, or even a simple text message, and we simply cannot manage to remember what we read. This is event is due to interference. Interference theory states that there are two forms of interference that can hinder our ability to properly encode information into our memory (Bergstrom 1892), proactive interference and retroactive interference. When reading, however, visual interference can play a large part in disrupting out learning process. In the experiment commonly known for the development ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A controlled process is a task which is new or unique to the person. It is serial, takes heavy demands on attention, requires conscious efforts to direct attention towards the task and is slow. Whereas an automatic process is a task which has already been learned. It can be parallel, makes no demands on attention, does not need conscious direction of attention towards the task and is fast. This implies that when we are presented with a word, the action of stating its color is a relatively new task compared to the already learnt behavior to read just words. Therefore, reading is seen as the automatic process which interferes with the slower controlled process of stating the color. With the alteration of the original Stroop Effect experiment, the automaticity model is discredited due to the fact that instead of stating the word the participant points at the observed color instead. This nonverbal response, pointing at the color, is not believed to be an automatic process, thus the automaticity model is questioned when researchers note an interference in the speed of processing in incongruently colored ... The Naturalist Known as Theodore Dresier Essay The Naturalist known as Theodore Dreiser Throughout history there has been many great authors that have created even greater works, and some people refer to these as classics. However, what truly makes an authors work a classic? The idea of a classic implies something that has continuance and consistence, and which produces unity and tradition, and transmits itself, and endures. A true classic, is an author who has expressed his thought, and who has spoken to all in his own peculiar style (Hutchins). Theodore Dreiser is the epitome of this very definition. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Much like many of his other themes and symbols, this one also came as a result of his experiences, most notably his childhood. Before he was born, his father owned a mill that eventually burned down. This event caused him to turn into a cynical, bitter man who abused and tortured his family mentally. This led to Dreiser coming to the conclusion that man is a pawn in the hands of a blind or malevolent fate (Warren 11). This idea of fate can be further explained as Dreiser accepting that no one can change the future and whatever is meant to happen to them will happen, whether it be good or bad. This quote shows him coming to grips with the idea of human suffering, which he later in life proves to be true in his quest for achievement in the big industrial cities. Blind fate exists heavily in the Sister Carrie and can be a positive or negative thing. For example, the main character Carrie becomes an immensely successful person while trying simply because of fate (where she and others happen to be at certain times). Another example is George Hurstwood who cheated on his wife and subsequently abandoning her by having an affair with Carrie (Dreiser). Blind fate plays its hand here by eventually leading to Hurstwood s suicide after being abandoned by Carrie, much like he abandoned his wife and child.
