XAT ASSESSMENT CRITERIA (XAC)
Local examiners are trained and certified ahead of the valuation period. They sign an
expression of interest and a confidentiality undertaking The Exam cell invites from this pool
assessors.

II ORGANISATION

c Is the opening attention grabbing?
d Are the ideas extended well (arguments, stats., Quotes, examples, illustrations etc.)
e Does the concluding paragraph loop back to the theme?
f Is the passage tied up coherently, causing no strain to the reader?
g Are ideas linked with appropriate linkers? (key words, pronouns, references, transitions etc.)
III LEXIS & SENTENCE STRUCTURE
a Is a range and variety of vocabulary, expressions and idioms observed?
b Is the choice of words apt?
c Is there any problem with the word formation?
d Is a suitable register used for the purpose? (academic, tactful, courteous, diplomatic)
e Is the tone and tenor of the writing appropriate?
f Are paragraphs sufficient and clear, center round single idea?
IV GRAMMAR & MECHANICS
a Is there a range of appropriate sentence patterns correctly used?
b Is the S-V agreement taken care of?
c Are articles, prepositions used appropriately and wherever required?
d Are spelling errors noticeable, distorting meaning
e Are felicitous phrasing and idiomatic expression used?
f Is there a good variety and range of vocabulary?
2. Scripts are collected from the Exam Cell along with the Rating Scale, the score sheet and the
stationary box.
It would take an average of 2-5 mts per script. Each criteria is marked as indicated and the
total made out. At the end of the evaluation the examiner returns the sealed scripts, score
sheet etc. to the office and signs off.
No marks are to be made in the scripts, an overarching statement summarizing the
performance of the candidate is to be recorded.
XAT office liaises with the examiners and allocates them their schedule.
Payment is transferred to their accounts once the entire work is completed.

3. LEGEND: Final Band Scores
9 Expert user Has fully operational command of the language: appropriate,
accurate and fluent with complete understanding.
8 Very good user Has fully operational command of the language, with only
occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriacies.
Misunderstandings may occur in unfamiliar situations. Handles
complex detailed argumentation well.
7 Good user Has operational command of the language, though with occasional
inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings in some
situations. Generally handles complex language well and
understands detailed reasoning.
6 Competent user Has generally effective command of the language despite some
inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings. Can use and
understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar
situations.
5 Modest user Has partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning
in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should
be able to handle basic communication in own field.
4 Limited user Basic competence is limited to familiar situations. Has frequent
problems in understanding and expression. Is not able to use
complex language.
3 Extremely
Limited user
Conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar
situations. Frequent breakdowns in communication occur.
2 Intermittent
user
No real communication is possible except for the most basic
information using isolated words or short formulae in familiar
situations and to meet immediate needs. Has great difficulty
understanding spoken and written English.
