1. Artist Research – Selena Gomez
The artist I will be focusing on is Selena Gomez, born Selena Marie Gomez on July 22 1992,
she is an American actress and singer. She formed the band Selena Gomez & the Scene after
signing a recording contract with Hollywood Records in 2008 and produced 3 studio albums
with them. However, in 2012 they split and she carried on her career in the music industry
as a solo artist and now has 3 solo studio albums.

Selena Gomez has been represented as a
star in this image by her clothing and
accessories. She is wearing a low cut
dress, which highlights her figure and is
wearing several bracelets and rings, which
signify her success and riches. The image
itself represents her as a star as she is
looking directly into the camera she
comes across as enticing and shows her
importance. One of the initial things we
notice is her red lipstick as it is bright and
bold, which matches with the colour
scheme of the magazine. The colour red
has connotations of danger and fierce this
portrays her as a star and someone of
importance.
Both the male and female gaze will
respond to this image positively. Male’s responses would be how they think she is beautiful
and attracted to her looks. Whereas females will not only admire her beauty but her hair,

who girls aspire to be as she looks dominant and enticing in this photo used.

Possible Audience Reaction / Response
Selena Gomez’s layout for her twitter is kept to the standard typical layout, however she
may have some mixed responses towards her icon picture and cover photo. The majority of
the audience will react positively as Selena Gomez’s pictures are quite revealing and she
looks good in them. For example the male gaze will focus on her body and looks within the
pictures and by her poses, such as her icon picture she is looking directly into the camera, it

3. will attract guys and get their attention as she comes across as alluring and inviting. Also
females will respond in quite a positive way as they will admire not only her looks and body
but also her style, such as her hair.
How I can apply the research of the existing artist to my own Music Video Production
By researching the artist I have chosen it has shown me how I should show case my artist’s
beauty to be in line with the fan base of pop music for my music video. As we can see Selena
Gomez has a big fan base I need to make sure my artist comes across similar and follow
conventions of Pop Videos. Just like Selena Gomez, I can use enticing and risqué images and
shots within my music video to reel in and captivate pop audience.

4. Possible Audience Reaction / Response
Selena Gomez’s Facebook page is filled with many posts, pictures and videos. This will make
her audience respond positively as she is always keeping them up to date with things such
as her daily life, her music and acting. By having a Facebook page it will allow the majority of
her fans to access her updates easily. Facebook is used by many people and is easy to
navigate so her fans response will be optimistic.
How I can apply the research of the existing artist to my own Music Video Production
This research has shown me that by creating a Facebook page, it will allow many of my
audience to access information, photos and videos about my artist quickly. This is a platform
used by many and I will be able to apply it to my music production by getting ideas of how
to showcase my artist.

5. Selena Gomez’s YouTube account
Possible Audience Reaction / Response
YouTube is a common website used by many people to access and listen and watch videos.
By Selena Gomez uploading her audio tracks and music videos to YouTube, it will allow her
audience to watch them with ease and access themwhenever they want, thus meaning her
audience reaction will be well. YouTube allows audiences to leave comments and like or
dislike the videos, Selena Gomez’s audience will be able to leave their thoughts on her songs
and videos within the comment section and gives the chance of Selena replying.
