Hidetoshi Katori and Jun Ye have been awarded the
Prize in Fundamental Physics. Their research is on the
development of ultra-precise quantum clocks. These
clocks are so accurate that they would lose less than a
second if operated for 15 billion years, which is roughly the
age of the universe. It will help scientists to better
understand gravity and magnetic fields. It will also aid
them in building better quantum computers. This clock
could help scientists predict earthquakes and volcanic
eruptions more correctly too.
2022 Breakthrough Prizes
The 2022 Breakthrough Prize winners
have been announced. The winners
range from vaccine-makers and
mathematicians to clock technologists.
But they all are passionate about their
work and working to change the world.
But what is the Breakthrough Prize?
The Breakthrough Prize is known as the “Oscars of Science”. It was founded in 2012 by Google’s co-founder
Sergey Brin, Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, Russian–Israeli entrepreneur Yuri
Milner and his wife Julia Milner and American entrepreneur Anne Wojcicki. It is given in the fields of Mathematics,
Physics and Life Sciences. It is the richest award in science as each prize is worth nearly three times as much as a
Nobel Prize. Nobel Prize winners are awarded a cash prize of nearly $ 1 million (10 million Swedish kronor). But
the Breakthrough Prize winners get a cash prize of $ 3 million.
The Breakthrough Prize is awarded for exceptional research in sciences, mathematics and physics every year.
The goal of the prize is to celebrate scientific discoveries. It also aims to inspire young scientists and children to
study technology, science and maths.
Who are the prize winners this year?
Life Science: 3 Prizes
Drew Weissman and Katalin Karikó
Shankar Balasubramanian, David Klenerman
and Pascal Mayer
The world got its first COVID-19 vaccine in December
2020. It was made by the Pfizer company. Another vaccine
by Moderna was launched just one week later. Both these
vaccines were created by using the science of mRNA. This
science was developed by Weissman and Karikó, who have
been working on this technology for the last ten years.
Weissman and his team are still studying how the
COVID-19 virus is changing and how it can affect both
animals and humans in the future.
These three researchers discovered a method to
rapidly study a full human genome at a very low cost.
Earlier, scientists had taken ten years to figure out a
genome for the first time. That cost them ` 7,000 crores.
But with their inventions, genomes can be sequenced in a
day for less than ` 70,000.
Studying or “sequencing” a genome means getting the
complete set of genetic information of an organism. This
means getting to know everything about an organism
within a day.
Kelly has developed medicine to treat amyloid diseases.
These diseases can impact the heart and nervous system.
They also cause decay of memory and the overall nervous
system. His company has developed a first-class medicine
to treat these diseases.
Takuro Mochizuki is a professor at Kyoto University in
Japan. His work focuses on complex geometry and algebra.
He aims to study the relationship between algebra and
geometry to develop technology that can be used in
different fields.

t is very easy for you to fall asleep
after watching a video or your
favourite cartoon. It may be a simple
pleasure for you, but nothing compares to the
beauty of storybooks. Stories help to develop
our imagination by bringing new ideas into our
world. The beauty of stories is that they can
be very realistic as well as extremely
imaginative.
Moreover, stories play an important role in
the growth and development of children.
Reading stories help children boost their
confidence in communication by introducing
new words into their language.
Therefore, this month we suggest you read
the book — “Short Stories For Children”. This
book has seventeen beautiful short stories. It
includes stories of children with their parents,
siblings, friends, school, principal, etc. Stories
of Babar, Humayun, Shivaji, Tanaji, and many
others are also included, which you would
enjoy. Happy reading!

ave you ever visited a village? In
villages, we hear a lot of stories
about ghosts. Villagers narrate in
amazing detail how the ghosts look,
how they talk, their magical powers, and
how they can be helpful if you behave
well with them. It feels like ghosts have their
own world similar to ours. It is a very
enjoyable and exciting experience to hear
these stories.
This month we have brought you one such
story. It is a story of a young man who went to
the forest and met a beautiful ghost. He
brought her home and married her. They had
kids. One day, something unusual happened
and she disappeared. Read the book ‘Bhooton
Ki Baarat’ to know why she disappeared. You
will enjoy the story. Retold and illustrated by
Barkha Lohiya, you will find its illustrations
equally intriguing.

is about a village boy named Badal. His father is a housekeeper of a
hill resort. One day, he meets a city girl named Meena who visits the
hill resort with her family. Both of them become good friends. She teaches
Badal how to read and write. She even gives her painting book to Badal. Meena
promises to show Badal the city but forgets her promise when she goes back to
the city. This breaks Badal’s heart. He becomes depressed from not receiving
any postcards from Meena. He places his paintings in a box along with Meena’s
address and sets it afloat in the river. When the box somehow reaches Meena
in the city, she submits it at a painting competition and wins the first prize.

s there any life on other planets? Researchers think there
might be a teeny-tiny chance! Recently, researchers at the
University of Cambridge found a new type of exoplanet,
called the ‘Hycean’ planet.
The word Hycean comes from ‘hydrogen’ and ‘ocean’. The
atmosphere of these planets is mostly made up of a thick layer of
hydrogen, which covers a huge ocean with liquid water. They are
bigger than Earth, so they have a good amount of gravity. Planets
having gravity and water? Sounds like Earth! Scientists believe that
there is a tiny chance of alien life on these planets.
These planets float alone in space. This means they are not
circling or revolving around any sun. Hence, they may also be called
rogue planets.
Hycean planets have solid surfaces, like Earth. Many of them are
larger and hotter than Earth, but they have large oceans to balance
the temperature. The conditions on these planets might be similar to
some of the aquatic environments on our planet. This means that
they could support at least some microbial life. Again, with almost
the same atmospheric situations as Earth, there might be some form
of life on these planets. That is why researchers will be studying
these planets with space telescopes, to find molecules that may
show signs of life.
The only doubt the researchers still have is about the energy source
of these planets. All planets get their energy from the sun of their solar
system. If Hyceans are floating in free space, where are they getting
their energy from? Only further research can answer this question!

cientists in Egypt have found a new species
of whale with four legs! They believe it
lived around 43 million years ago. They
have named it the ‘PhiomicetusAnubis.’It is believed
to be the earliest type of semi-aquatic whale
discovered in Africa.
The fossil of the amphibious Phiomicetus Anubis
was discovered in Egypt’s Western Desert. Although
the area is now desert, it was once covered by the
sea, and many aquatic fossils are being found there.

in water. It weighed 600 kilograms and was 10 feet
long. This is an important discovery for Egyptian

his year, we are celebrating 100 years of
the BCG vaccine. It is the only approved
vaccine we use to fight Tuberculosis (TB) in
humans. Let’s learn more about its history.
BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) was developed
by two Frenchmen named Albert Calmette and
Camille Guerin. It was first used in humans in 1921 to
provide immunity against TB.
TB is a very old disease. Scientists have found
evidence of TB in Egypt from 3000 BC. It is caused
by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In
humans, it usually affects the lungs, but it can also
affect other organs. Sadly, TB is a major public health
problem in the world. The BCG vaccine has been
helping us all these years.
India is planning to eliminate TB by 2025. For
this, we need better tests, medicines, and vaccines.

ome scientists say that dinosaurs
disappeared from the Earth because an
asteroid hit the Earth and killed them.
Can a dangerous asteroid collide with the Earth
again and destroy us?
NASA has announced that the chance of an
asteroid named Bennu hitting the Earth between
now and the year 2300 is about 1 in 1,750.
According to them, September 24, 2182, is the
date when Bennu might reach the Earth. Bennu
is about half a kilometre wide, and if it were to
impact the Earth, it could cause serious
destruction. Bennu was discovered by scientists
from NASA in 1999.
Willwe die?
No. There is a 99.4% chance that it will not
collidewiththeEarth.Still,scientistsfromdifferent
countries are working to avoid the collision.
USA’s Plan
To know more about Bennu, NASA had sent
a spacecraft named OSIRIS-REx to Bennu. The
purpose of this spacecraft was to collect the
surface sample of the asteroid and bring it back
to the Earth. Now the spacecraft is on its way to
the Earth. Osiris-Rex is expected to return to the
Earth in 2023. These samples will help us
understand the asteroid and the situation better.
Moreover, NASA is planning to send a
9-meter-tall spacecraft named HAMMER
towards Bennu. This spacecraft will hit the
asteroid like a hammer. NASA simulations
suggest that 34–53 blows from HAMMER
spacecraft would be sufficient to change the
path of Bennu and save the Earth.
China’s Plan
Chinese scientists are planning to fire more
than 20 rockets into space to divert the asteroid.
Their calculation says that 23 Long March 5
rockets would be able to divert Bennu away
from the Earth if all of them hit the asteroid
simultaneously. Each of these rockets weighs
900 metric tons.

or the first time in history, there was rainfall at the highest point of
Greenland’s ice sheet. This was recorded by the scientists at the
permanent research station. (The research station is located at the
ice peak.) This is a clear sign of climate change and global warming. Rainfall in
the land of ice is impossible to think about. This incident has worried the
scientists because the average temperatures are normally much below
freezing degrees at the highest point.
Greenland has been seeing many changes this year. Temperatures have
reached 18 degrees higher than normal. The rainfall occurred during the three
days that were consistently warm. The rainfall has caused significant melting
of Greenland’s ice.
Why are scientists worried?
This is the third time in history that
temperatures have increased so much in
Greenland. A huge amount of the ice also
started melting this year in July. Scientists
think that a large portion of Greenland’s ice
sheet is going to melt in the near future and
that the sudden rainfall is a sign of this. This
is happening mainly due to climate change. If
the melting starts, it can’t be stopped even if global warming is controlled.
If all of Greenland’s ice melts, the water levels in the world will rise by 9
metres. This means that many seaside cities like New York and Shanghai will
go underwater. Also, scientists believe that if actions are not taken, the Arctic
region would totally melt by 2050.
Background Information
Green Land
Greenland is the world’s largest island. It is part of Denmark. It is located
between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. Most of Greenland is covered in ice,
snow and glaciers. Still, around 60,000 people live on the island. They live
mostly on the southern coasts.

you get separated? Nine-year-old Amal is walking
8,000 km to find her mother. She is a Syrian
refugee. Refugees are people who are forced to leave their
country due to war. Right now, there is a civil war in Syria.
Today, about 6.8 million Syrian refugees are escaping to
other countries. Each year, when families get separated,
Syrian children are affected the most.
LittleAmal is not a real girl. She is a 3.5 m tall puppet. She
represents all young refugees. She has been created to draw
the attention of the world to the urgent needs of young
refugees.
Who has created the puppet and
how does it walk?
The puppet has been created by the Handspring Puppet
Company inAfrica. The company is famous for building large
puppets. Little Amal needs the help of four puppeteers to
walk. The main puppeteer is inside the puppet and walks on
stilts. Two other puppeteers control Little Amal’s hand
movement from the outside with sticks. The fourth
puppeteer supports her back. The main puppeteer also
controls how Little Amal’s face, head and eyes move, using
strings. Light materials such as cane and carbon fibre have
been used to make Little Amal so that she can walk easily
on all kinds of roads.

Every city is part of Little Amal’s story. For example, in
Turkey, LittleAmal followed a road with empty shoes to reach
the beach. The beach is a symbol of how thousands of Syrian
kids have lost their lives trying to cross the sea. In Italy, she
will be welcomed by another puppet, an Italian grandmother.
She will teach LittleAmal how to face the problems in her life.
Amal’s journey will end at the Manchester International
Festival, where she will finally meet her mother. Manchester
is one of the cities in the UK that is very welcoming to
Syrian refugees.

new study has discovered evidence of ritual beer
drinking at a burial site in China. Archaeologists
have discovered 9,000-year-old pots placed on a
raised platform, which were maybe used during funerals.
How did the archaeologists
find signs of alcohol?
Archaeologists found a burial platform in southern
China. The platform contained two human skeletons and
many high-quality pots. Many of these pots were unbroken
pottery vessels. Some were decorated with designs.
Each pot could be held in one hand and used for
drinking. Some pots even had long necks; they looked like
the ones in which people used to drink alcohol in ancient
times.
Clay pots are porous and absorb liquid from food. The
research team analysed the insides of the pots and found
signs of beer fermentation. This showed that the vessels

rchaeologists have found a well-preserved human
skeleton at a burial site in Pompeii, Italy. It is one of
the best-preserved skeletons ever found in the city.
It showed signs of half-mummification; the skeleton even
had hair and ears on its skull! This is an important discovery.
It shows the funeral rituals and culture of the ancient city of
Pompeii.
History of the Roman City of Pompeii
Pompeii was an ancient city in Rome. The city was
culturally advanced and lively. It had a population of 13,000
people. Unfortunately, the entire city was buried when Mount
Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD.
The volcanic eruption destroyed the city and killed many
people. Surprisingly, no one knew about the city because it
was buried 10 feet underground. In 1592, Italian architect
Domenico Fontana noticed some buildings while digging an
underground aqueduct for a mill. Still, it was Spanish military
engineer Roque Joaquín de Alcubierre who made proper
excavations to discover the lost city in 1748. Pompeii is now
a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most popular
tourist attractions in Italy.
The body of the man was found in a burial site tomb that
has a date of around 70 AD. This means it was a few years
before the volcanic eruption. Markings on the tomb say his
name was Marcus Venerius. He was a theatre actor in
Pompeii. This is the first time archaeologists have found
proof of Roman dramas of ancient times.
Archaeologists are also studying why the man was buried
just like the Egyptian rituals. Some pieces of clothing were
found on his body, and the skeleton is in excellent condition.
These are signs of mummification.

The Art of Listening
O
nce upon a time, there lived a rabbit. One day, he
was getting late for a meeting of the forest
animals. He remembered Miss Deer telling him
that this monthly meeting was for herbivores.
On his way to the meeting, he came across Mr. Owl.
Mr. Owl asked him, “Where are you running to?” The
rabbit said, “I am so late for the monthly meeting! I am
sure they have started without me.” Mr. Owl looked
confused. He said, “Today’s meeting is for carnivores.
Don’t go that way.”
But the rabbit was not in a mood to listen to him. He
was already late. So, he ran as fast as he could. He
shouted, “Yes! I know today’s meeting will discuss
waterfalls. I HAVE TO GO!”
When he finally reached the meeting, he found wolves,
foxes, hyenas and other carnivores. They were discussing
how to chase and kill rabbits. The rabbit realised his
mistake. He ran away from the place of the meeting as fast
as he could. After that incident, the rabbit decided that he
would always listen to others carefully.
This simple story highlights the importance of listening.
We are often in a hurry or do many tasks at the same time.
Sometimes, we think about so many things at once that
we do not listen to what has been said. This way, we may
forget about an important announcement, homework,
projects or meetings.
The other point is about inactive listening. This happens
when we do listen to what is said. However, we forget it
within minutes because we are not paying attention. What
we need to do is to learn the art of listening.
How Can the Art of Listening Help You?
Become a Better Student:
Many times, we forget the lesson during our exams.
But if we remember the day it was taught in the class, we
suddenly recall all the notes for the lesson. This is how our
memory stores information when we carefully listen to the
information.
Become a Better Friend:
Good listening means paying full attention to
what your friend is saying. If you listen to the
thoughts and experiences shared by your
friends, they will know that you care about
them. Listening to someone without
stopping them in between helps to build
trust and friendship.
Become a Better Public Speaker:
When you listen well to others, you get to know more
information and opinions. As a result, you become an
expert on a topic. This is because you have gathered
information by listening carefully. This can help you write
good speeches based on people’s real thoughts and
experiences. Your speeches will sound as if you have really
paid attention to others.
How to Become a Good Listener?
Focus on What the Other Person Has to Say
In most conversations, we keep planning what to say next,
instead of listening to the other person. We need to calm
down our thoughts, and focus on what is being said to us.
Ask Questions during a Conversation
Asking questions helps us to fully understand what the
other person is saying. It also helps to continue the
conversation. By asking questions, you will get to know more
about the topic. Also, the other person will come to know
that you are really interested in the conversation.
Repeat Back to Remove Doubts
If you are not able to hear or understand what a person is
saying, repeat back what you heard, in your own words, and
ask the speaker to clarify. This gives you a second chance to
listen carefully, and to understand what is being said. Also,
the speaker will think that you are a highly active listener.

T
he entrance exam of the National
Defence Academy (NDA) is a

who wish to join the Indian Armed Forces as
officers can take the exam. Earlier, it was
limited to males only. Now, in a historic move,
the Government of India has decided to allow
females to appear in the exam and join the
armed forces. So they can now get a Permanent
Commission (PC) in the armed forces.
This decision came after the Supreme Court (SC) allowed female candidates to
sit for the NDA exams from the current year while hearing a Public Interest
Litigation (PIL).
What is the Permanent Commission?
There are two ways to join the Armed Forces as a commissioned officer: One can
join and serve the Armed Forces on PC till retirement, or one can serve the Armed
Forces for 10–14 years on Short Service Commission (SSC). In PC, an officer gets a
pension and other benefits after retirement, but the SSC officers don’t enjoy such
benefits. Previously, only males were given a permanent commission. In February
2020, the Supreme Court ordered to grant PC to women in the armed forces. So now,
men and women will get equal opportunities in the Indian Armed Forces.
How can girls join the Indian armed forces?
Girls who wish to join the Indian Armed Forces have various options. They can join
the Indian Army, Airforce or Navy.
Girls can join the Indian armed forces in the following ways :
1.	After Class X and serve on the post of Soldier General Duty (Woman Military
Police)
2.	After Class XII, through the Military Nursing Service (MNS) exam, NDA exam or
National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to joinArmed Forces Medical College

PIL is a court case in which justice is demanded for those who cannot fight their case
on their own, such as poor people, women and children.
A
new United Nations (UN) report
says that more than half of the
world’s population has no social
protection. This is despite the fact that many
countries have started social protection
schemes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Social protection includes programs that
are designed to reduce poverty and to
improve the overall well-being of people.
The goal of the government should be to
protect its citizens by offering good health
care and regular income. Some examples of
social protection schemes are
• Financial help to citizens who need
money
• Pensions to the needy and old
• Free food distribution to the poor
• Mid-day meals in schools
• Job opportunities for young adults
• Better health care for the sick
• Extra support for families with children
Socialprotection in India
India also focuses on some social
protection policies to help the extremely
poor and needy:
• The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural
EmploymentGuaranteeAct(MGNREGA)
promises ‘100 days of employment’ to
people from rural families. Thus, it is a
safety net for the poor.
• Programs like the Indira Gandhi National
Old Age and Pensions Scheme, National
Family Benefit Scheme, Janani Suraksha
Yojana (Mother’s Protection Scheme) and
RashtriyaSwasthyaBimaYojana(National
Health Insurance scheme) are helpful.
• Food ration system, cash transfers to
bank accounts, etc., are some other
ways in which the government offers
security to the poor.
• Under Ayushman Bharat Yojana, the
central government provides free health
insurance to the poor. Many states have
also launched similar schemes.
After the pandemic, all countries must offer
more services to their people. In India, more
than 70% of the population faces the risk of
losing their jobs and having no food to eat.
They have to work every day to run their
families and live a secure life.

What is a wetland?
Awetland is an area that is flooded by water either permanently
(for years or decades) or seasonally (for weeks or months).
Hence, it creates an environment that has the properties of both
land and water. Wetlands are found near lakes, rivers, estuaries,
oceans, etc. Wetlands are called Earth’s kidneys because they
filter wastewater and absorb harmful pollutants like Carbon
Dioxide and Nitrogen from the atmosphere. Wetlands also help
during dry seasons by holding the water in their soil. They are
home to thousands of different kinds of plants, animals, and birds.

What is the RAMSAR convention?
Knowing the value of wetlands, it is important to save
wetlands worldwide. Hence, world leaders met in the
Ramsar city of Iran and signed an agreement on February
2, 1971 to protect the wetlands across the world. This
agreement is called the Ramsar Convention. Under the
agreement, a list of important wetlands from different
countries is maintained so that they can be monitored and
improved regularly.

Minister Sh. Arvind Kejriwal. It is a 24-metre-tall air
purifier that will help to fight the rising pollution in the city.
The smog tower is considered important to control Delhi’s
pollution levels. Today, Delhi is one of the most polluted cities
in India. In 2020, it was the most polluted capital city in the
world. Its air quality has fallen sharply in the past few years.
In November 2019, the Supreme Court directed the Centre
and the Delhi government to prepare a plan to install ‘smog
towers’ across the capital to deal with air pollution.
Interesting facts about
the Smog Tower
1. The tower sucks in polluted air from the top. This air
passes through multiple filters, which filter out different
pollutants according to their sizes.
2. There are 40 giant fans at the bottom of the tower, which
push fresh air into the atmosphere.

If you had the option to migrate to a place during
the winters, where would that be and why?
Wetlands and Migratory birds
One of the best-known functions of wetlands is that they
are home to migratory birds. Birds use wetlands for drinking
water, resting, shelter, etc. Migratory birds come from other
countries to enjoy a suitable environment in the wetlands.
The Sultanpur National Park and Bhindawas Wildlife

The Link between Our
Brain and Body Organs
Affects Our Thoughts
S
cientists have found that the strength of the
connection between our brain and body organs
decides how we feel about ourselves. Our body
organs send some signals to the mind without our knowledge.
Some adults have brains that are less powerful in receiving
these internal messages. They think they don’t look good
enough or worry about their weight.
How was the study done?
A group of healthy UK adults was first asked about how
they felt about their looks and body weight that day. Next,
researchers measured the internal signals sent by their hearts
and stomachs to their brains. The strength of the connection
between the stomach and the brain was then measured. This
was done by recording the electrical activity in both the
regions, at the same time.
Power Words
Appearance (n.) The way someone or something
looks
Internal (adj.) Inside something or inside the body
Strength (n.) Force or power
Worksheet : LS026
Researchers saythatwe should notthink negatively
about our bodies as it may confuse our brains and
hamper our lives. Write 2-3 lines appreciating
your bodyand looks.
What did the study find?
They found that people who received weak signals from
the heart and stomach were more worried about their
appearance, weight and overall looks.
Scientists are trying to understand why some brains are
better at receiving these internal signals than others. They
say the reason for this may be the way someone’s body is
made up internally. But only future research will give us the
exact reason.
Why is the research useful?
Negative body image or feeling bad about one’s own body
can have a serious effect on people’s lives. Researchers say
that future research can help us to treat people who are
experiencing negative body image.

for an hour on Friday, weekends and holidays. They
also said that game-playing would only be allowed between

Why such strict rules?
Many studies have shown that playing excessive online

T
welve-year-old BenyaminAhmed
from London has made nearly
three crores during his school
holidays. Great way to make use of
holidays, isn’t it? But how did he earn such
a large amount?
Well, he created a painting and sold it.
The painting is called Weird Whales, a set
of 3,350 whale-shaped emojis. He did
not, however, draw these whales. Instead,
he used computer programming to create
the painting. Then, he created a non-
fungible token (NFT) to sell the painting.
NFT functions like a digital certificate
of ownership. It is a technology that helps
prove that a digital item is the only one of
its kind in existence and, therefore, cannot
be copied or reproduced without the
owner’s knowledge and permission. NFTs
are based on the same technology that is
used by cryptocurrencies like bitcoin.
These days, artworks such as photos,
videos, and audio linked to NFTs are
selling quite well.
Benyamin has not got the money in
cash but in the form of a cryptocurrency
called Ethereum. A cryptocurrency is a
type of digital currency that uses digital
files as money. So, it is not physical
money that we usually see or spend.
Benyamin previously created a
Minecraft-inspired digital-art collection,
but that sold for less. His father taught
him how to code and make NFTs. Coding
is a fun exercise for him. Benyamin is
already working on his next superhero-
themed digital art collection.
Is NFT a good way to
selldigitalartwork?
Many people believe that NFT is not a
good way to sell artwork because a lot of
electricity is consumed for making an NFT.

here is a very useful but strange number in mathematics represented by the
Greek alphabet π (pronounced as the word ‘pie’). The number starts as
3.141592653589793... and
continues without end. Swiss researchers
have recently spent 108 days calculating
the value of π to 62.8 trillion digits. This is
a new record. The previous world record
was 50 trillion digits.
What is π in mathematics?
The circle is an important shape in
geometry. No matter how big a circle is, if
you divide its circumference (the distance
around the edge of the circle) by the
diameter (the largest distance between
two points on a circle), you will get the
same number 3.141592653589793… As
this number can never be written
completely, mathematicians have been
using the symbol π in place of the number.
What is the use of π ?
The simplest use of πis to calculate the
area of a circle. The area of a circle = π r2
,
whereristheradius ofthecircle.However,
πhas many more applications. It is used in
most calculations for building and
construction, telecommunications, music,
determining the path of spacecraft and
the size of planets and other objects in
the universe.
Why did scientists calculate the value of π to trillions of digits?
An approximate value of π (which is taken as 3.14) can meet almost all calculation
needs. Scientists say that the only reason for doing this is to set a benchmark using the
power of the newest computers. It is just like athletes competing at the Olympic Games
for setting newer world records that are not useful by themselves. Still, they set a
benchmark, which teaches us what we can achieve and how we can motivate others.

W
hile shopping for clothes, have you ever been
confused about which size to choose? What does
‘size 14’ mean? How can ‘size S’ in one brand be
the same as ‘size XS’ in another?
Indians face a lot of problems when it comes to finding
the right size of clothes. This is because all the brands
follow size charts used in other countries. These charts
divide sizes into small (S), medium (M), large (L) and
extra-large (XL).
To solve this problem, the government has launched a
survey called INDIAsize. The project will prepare a new
standardised size chart for Indian ready-to-wear clothing.

he Reserve Bank of India, for the
first time, has constructed a
composite Financial Inclusion
Index (FI-Index) to capture the extent of
financial inclusion across the country. The
annual FI-Index for the financial year
2020-21 is 53.9 as against 43.4 for the
financial year 2016-17. This means the
country is progressing toward financial
inclusion.
What is FinancialInclusion?
Financial inclusion means that every
person in the country should easily be able
to open bank accounts, borrow money, get
insurance etc. Opening a bank account in
cities is easy as there are many bank
branches. It is difficult in villages as there
are fewer bank branches which are far off.
Similarly, it is easy for large companies to
borrow money from banks but difficult for
small businesses.
What does the Financial
Inclusion Index (FI-Index) show?
Financial inclusion is needed to make
surethateverypartofthecountrydevelops
equally. It also makes sure that all citizens
are progressing well. The FI-index shows
how much of the country is financially
included. It studies how easily different
parts of society can do their banking,
investments,insurance,postalandpension
activities. The FI-index score is measured
on a scale of 0 to 100 – zero means no
financial inclusion and 100 means complete
RBI introduces the
Financial Inclusion
Index(FI-Index):
What is it?
Power Words
Access (n.) The option to use or get something from a place
Inclusion (n.) Being involved or included in something
Index (n.) A number to measure something
financial inclusion. The index shows how
many people have easy access to good-
quality money-related services, how many
they can use etc.
The new report shows that most of the
country is still not financially included. But
the score has become better compared to
2017. The RBI believes that services like
the Aadhar card, online payment systems,
the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana
etc., have helped more people use money-
related services.
Background information
Pradhan Mantri Jan
Dhan Yojana
Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)
is the national mission for financially
including all citizens. It allows people to
easily open different bank accounts, get
pension, insurance etc.
Financial year
A financial year (FY) is a one-year period
used to make reports on money-related
matters and plans to spend money. The
FY is different for different countries. In
India, the financial year starts on 1st April
and ends on 31st March of the next year.
For example, FY 2020 started on 1st April
2020 and ended on 31st March 2021.

Free Digital Copy of StudentEdge Newspaper October Month

  • 1. StudentEdge A newspaper especially crafted for school going children Volume : 1 | Issue : 7 | October 2021 | Price : ~ 50 (Newspaper Only) | ~ 100 (With Online Discussion and Support) News, Hobbies, Education, Entertainment, Exposure, Personality Development, Competitions “A man is but a product of his thoughts. What he thinks he becomes.” - Mahatma Gandhi Hidetoshi Katori and Jun Ye have been awarded the Prize in Fundamental Physics. Their research is on the development of ultra-precise quantum clocks. These clocks are so accurate that they would lose less than a second if operated for 15 billion years, which is roughly the age of the universe. It will help scientists to better understand gravity and magnetic fields. It will also aid them in building better quantum computers. This clock could help scientists predict earthquakes and volcanic eruptions more correctly too. 2022 Breakthrough Prizes The 2022 Breakthrough Prize winners have been announced. The winners range from vaccine-makers and mathematicians to clock technologists. But they all are passionate about their work and working to change the world. But what is the Breakthrough Prize? The Breakthrough Prize is known as the “Oscars of Science”. It was founded in 2012 by Google’s co-founder Sergey Brin, Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, Russian–Israeli entrepreneur Yuri Milner and his wife Julia Milner and American entrepreneur Anne Wojcicki. It is given in the fields of Mathematics, Physics and Life Sciences. It is the richest award in science as each prize is worth nearly three times as much as a Nobel Prize. Nobel Prize winners are awarded a cash prize of nearly $ 1 million (10 million Swedish kronor). But the Breakthrough Prize winners get a cash prize of $ 3 million. The Breakthrough Prize is awarded for exceptional research in sciences, mathematics and physics every year. The goal of the prize is to celebrate scientific discoveries. It also aims to inspire young scientists and children to study technology, science and maths. Who are the prize winners this year? Life Science: 3 Prizes Drew Weissman and Katalin Karikó Shankar Balasubramanian, David Klenerman and Pascal Mayer The world got its first COVID-19 vaccine in December 2020. It was made by the Pfizer company. Another vaccine by Moderna was launched just one week later. Both these vaccines were created by using the science of mRNA. This science was developed by Weissman and Karikó, who have been working on this technology for the last ten years. Weissman and his team are still studying how the COVID-19 virus is changing and how it can affect both animals and humans in the future. These three researchers discovered a method to rapidly study a full human genome at a very low cost. Earlier, scientists had taken ten years to figure out a genome for the first time. That cost them ` 7,000 crores. But with their inventions, genomes can be sequenced in a day for less than ` 70,000. Studying or “sequencing” a genome means getting the complete set of genetic information of an organism. This means getting to know everything about an organism within a day. Researchers think there might be a teeny-tiny chance! Recently, researchers at the University of Cambridge found a new type of exoplanet, called the ‘Hycean’ planet. The word Hycean comes from ‘hydrogen’ and ‘ocean’. The atmosphere of these planets is mostly made up of a thick layer of hydrogen, which covers a huge ocean with liquid water. They are bigger than Earth, so they have a good amount of gravity. Planets having gravity and water? Sounds like Earth! Scientists believe that there is a tiny chance of alien life on these planets. These planets float alone in space. This means they are not circling or revolving around any sun. Hence, they may also be called rogue planets. Hycean planets have solid surfaces, like Earth. Many of them are larger and hotter than Earth, but they have large oceans to balance the temperature. The conditions on these planets might be similar to some of the aquatic environments on our planet. This means that they could support at least some microbial life. Again, with almost the same atmospheric situations as Earth, there might be some form of life on these planets. That is why researchers will be studying these planets with space telescopes, to find molecules that may show signs of life. The only doubt the researchers still have is about the energy source of these planets. All planets get their energy from the sun of their solar system. If Hyceans are floating in free space, where are they getting their energy from? Only further research can answer this question! Power Words Aquatic (adj.) Related to water Exoplanet (n.) Can a dangerous asteroid collide with the Earth again and destroy us? NASA has announced that the chance of an asteroid named Bennu hitting the Earth between now and the year 2300 is about 1 in 1,750. According to them, September 24, 2182, is the date when Bennu might reach the Earth. Bennu is about half a kilometre wide, and if it were to impact the Earth, it could cause serious destruction. Bennu was discovered by scientists from NASA in 1999. Willwe die? No. There is a 99.4% chance that it will not collidewiththeEarth.Still, scientistsfromdifferent countries are working to avoid the collision. USA’s Plan To know more about Bennu, NASA had sent a spacecraft named OSIRIS-REx to Bennu. The purpose of this spacecraft was to collect the surface sample of the asteroid and bring it back to the Earth. Now the spacecraft is on its way to the Earth. Osiris-Rex is expected to return to the Earth in 2023. These samples will help us understand the asteroid and the situation better. Moreover, NASA is planning to send a 9-meter-tall spacecraft named HAMMER towards Bennu. This spacecraft will hit the asteroid like a hammer. NASA simulations suggest that 34–53 blows from HAMMER spacecraft would be sufficient to change the path of Bennu and save the Earth. China’s Plan Chinese scientists are planning to fire more than 20 rockets into space to divert the asteroid. Their calculation says that 23 Long March 5 rockets would be able to divert Bennu away from the Earth if all of them hit the asteroid simultaneously. Each of these rockets weighs 900 metric tons. F or the first time in history, there was rainfall at the highest point of Greenland’s ice sheet. This was recorded by the scientists at the permanent research station. (The research station is located at the ice peak.) This is a clear sign of climate change and global warming. Rainfall in the land of ice is impossible to think about. This incident has worried the scientists because the average temperatures are normally much below freezing degrees at the highest point. Greenland has been seeing many changes this year. Temperatures have reached 18 degrees higher than normal. The rainfall occurred during the three days that were consistently warm. The rainfall has caused significant melting of Greenland’s ice. Why are scientists worried? This is the third time in history that temperatures have increased so much in Greenland. A huge amount of the ice also started melting this year in July. Scientists think that a large portion of Greenland’s ice sheet is going to melt in the near future and that the sudden rainfall is a sign of this. This is happening mainly due to climate change. If the melting starts, it can’t be stopped even if global warming is controlled. If all of Greenland’s ice melts, the water levels in the world will rise by 9 metres. This means that many seaside cities like New York and Shanghai will go underwater. Also, scientists believe that if actions are not taken, the Arctic region would totally melt by 2050. Background Information Green Land Greenland is the world’s largest island. It is part of Denmark. It is located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. Archaeologists have discovered 9,000-year-old pots placed on a raised platform, which were maybe used during funerals. How did the archaeologists find signs of alcohol? Archaeologists found a burial platform in southern China. The platform contained two human skeletons and many high-quality pots. Many of these pots were unbroken pottery vessels. Some were decorated with designs. Each pot could be held in one hand and used for drinking. Some pots even had long necks; they looked like the ones in which people used to drink alcohol in ancient times. Clay pots are porous and absorb liquid from food. The research team analysed the insides of the pots and found signs of beer fermentation. This showed that the vessels A rchaeologists have found a well-preserved human skeleton at a burial site in Pompeii, Italy. It is one of the best-preserved skeletons ever found in the city. It showed signs of half-mummification; the skeleton even had hair and ears on its skull! This is an important discovery. It shows the funeral rituals and culture of the ancient city of Pompeii. History of the Roman City of Pompeii Pompeii was an ancient city in Rome. The city was culturally advanced and lively. It had a population of 13,000 people. Unfortunately, the entire city was buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. The volcanic eruption destroyed the city and killed many people. Surprisingly, no one knew about the city because it was buried 10 feet underground. In 1592, Italian architect Domenico Fontana noticed some buildings while digging an underground aqueduct for a mill. Still, it was Spanish military engineer Roque Joaquín de Alcubierre who made proper excavations to discover the lost city in 1748. Pompeii is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy. The body of the man was found in a burial site tomb that has a date of around 70 AD. This means it was a few years before the volcanic eruption. Markings on the tomb say his name was Marcus Venerius. He was a theatre actor in Pompeii. This is the first time archaeologists have found proof of Roman dramas of ancient times. Archaeologists are also studying why the man was buried just like the Egyptian rituals. Some pieces of clothing were found on his body, and the skeleton is in excellent condition. These are signs of mummification. Power Words Aqueduct (n.) • 7. 07 Moral Education StudentEdge • October 2021 www.studentedge.in The Art of Listening O nce upon a time, there lived a rabbit. One day, he was getting late for a meeting of the forest animals. He remembered Miss Deer telling him that this monthly meeting was for herbivores. On his way to the meeting, he came across Mr. Owl. Mr. Owl asked him, “Where are you running to?” The rabbit said, “I am so late for the monthly meeting! I am sure they have started without me.” Mr. Owl looked confused. He said, “Today’s meeting is for carnivores. Don’t go that way.” But the rabbit was not in a mood to listen to him. He was already late. So, he ran as fast as he could. He shouted, “Yes! I know today’s meeting will discuss waterfalls. I HAVE TO GO!” When he finally reached the meeting, he found wolves, foxes, hyenas and other carnivores. They were discussing how to chase and kill rabbits. The rabbit realised his mistake. He ran away from the place of the meeting as fast as he could. After that incident, the rabbit decided that he would always listen to others carefully. This simple story highlights the importance of listening. We are often in a hurry or do many tasks at the same time. Sometimes, we think about so many things at once that we do not listen to what has been said. This way, we may forget about an important announcement, homework, projects or meetings. The other point is about inactive listening. This happens when we do listen to what is said. However, we forget it within minutes because we are not paying attention. What we need to do is to learn the art of listening. How Can the Art of Listening Help You? Become a Better Student: Many times, we forget the lesson during our exams. But if we remember the day it was taught in the class, we suddenly recall all the notes for the lesson. This is how our memory stores information when we carefully listen to the information. Become a Better Friend: Good listening means paying full attention to what your friend is saying. If you listen to the thoughts and experiences shared by your friends, they will know that you care about them. Listening to someone without stopping them in between helps to build trust and friendship. Become a Better Public Speaker: When you listen well to others, you get to know more information and opinions. As a result, you become an expert on a topic. This is because you have gathered information by listening carefully. This can help you write good speeches based on people’s real thoughts and experiences. Your speeches will sound as if you have really paid attention to others. How to Become a Good Listener? Focus on What the Other Person Has to Say In most conversations, we keep planning what to say next, instead of listening to the other person. We need to calm down our thoughts, and focus on what is being said to us. Ask Questions during a Conversation Asking questions helps us to fully understand what the other person is saying. It also helps to continue the conversation. By asking questions, you will get to know more about the topic. Also, the other person will come to know that you are really interested in the conversation. Repeat Back to Remove Doubts If you are not able to hear or understand what a person is saying, repeat back what you heard, in your own words, and ask the speaker to clarify. This gives you a second chance to listen carefully, and to understand what is being said. Also, the speaker will think that you are a highly active listener. Be Patient in Giving an Answer Wait for the other person to finish speaking before you give your answer or opinion. If you disturb the speaker, they might feel that you were not really listening. Both the listener and speaker will lose their attention if you do not let the speaker finish. Power Words Carnivore (n.) An animal that eats meat Herbivore (n.) What is a wetland? Awetland is an area that is flooded by water either permanently (for years or decades) or seasonally (for weeks or months). Hence, it creates an environment that has the properties of both land and water. Wetlands are found near lakes, rivers, estuaries, oceans, etc. Wetlands are called Earth’s kidneys because they filter wastewater and absorb harmful pollutants like Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen from the atmosphere. Wetlands also help during dry seasons by holding the water in their soil. They are home to thousands of different kinds of plants, animals, and birds. Four Indian ‘Wetlands’ Added to Ramsar List What is the RAMSAR convention? Knowing the value of wetlands, it is important to save wetlands worldwide. Hence, world leaders met in the Ramsar city of Iran and signed an agreement on February 2, 1971 to protect the wetlands across the world. This agreement is called the Ramsar Convention. Under the agreement, a list of important wetlands from different countries is maintained so that they can be monitored and improved regularly. Power Words Convention (n.) • 12. 12 LIFESTYLE StudentEdge • October 2021 www.studentedge.in The Link between Our Brain and Body Organs Affects Our Thoughts S cientists have found that the strength of the connection between our brain and body organs decides how we feel about ourselves. Our body organs send some signals to the mind without our knowledge. Some adults have brains that are less powerful in receiving these internal messages. They think they don’t look good enough or worry about their weight. How was the study done? A group of healthy UK adults was first asked about how they felt about their looks and body weight that day. Next, researchers measured the internal signals sent by their hearts and stomachs to their brains. The strength of the connection between the stomach and the brain was then measured. This was done by recording the electrical activity in both the regions, at the same time. Power Words Appearance (n.) The way someone or something looks Internal (adj.) Inside something or inside the body Strength (n.) Force or power Worksheet : LS026 Researchers saythatwe should notthink negatively about our bodies as it may confuse our brains and hamper our lives. Write 2-3 lines appreciating your bodyand looks. What did the study find? They found that people who received weak signals from the heart and stomach were more worried about their appearance, weight and overall looks. Scientists are trying to understand why some brains are better at receiving these internal signals than others. They say the reason for this may be the way someone’s body is made up internally. But only future research will give us the exact reason. Why is the research useful? Negative body image or feeling bad about one’s own body can have a serious effect on people’s lives. Researchers say that future research can help us to treat people who are experiencing negative body image. 3 hours a week : China limits online gaming for children T he Chinese Government has announced that under- 18 online gamers will only be allowed to play games for an hour on Friday, weekends and holidays. • 16. 16 Computer StudentEdge • October 2021 www.studentedge.in T welve-year-old BenyaminAhmed from London has made nearly three crores during his school holidays. Great way to make use of holidays, isn’t it? But how did he earn such a large amount? Well, he created a painting and sold it. The painting is called Weird Whales, a set of 3,350 whale-shaped emojis. He did not, however, draw these whales. Instead, he used computer programming to create the painting. Then, he created a non- fungible token (NFT) to sell the painting. NFT functions like a digital certificate of ownership. It is a technology that helps prove that a digital item is the only one of its kind in existence and, therefore, cannot be copied or reproduced without the owner’s knowledge and permission. NFTs are based on the same technology that is used by cryptocurrencies like bitcoin. These days, artworks such as photos, videos, and audio linked to NFTs are selling quite well. Benyamin has not got the money in cash but in the form of a cryptocurrency called Ethereum. A cryptocurrency is a type of digital currency that uses digital files as money. So, it is not physical money that we usually see or spend. Benyamin previously created a Minecraft-inspired digital-art collection, but that sold for less. His father taught him how to code and make NFTs. Coding is a fun exercise for him. Benyamin is already working on his next superhero- themed digital art collection. Is NFT a good way to selldigitalartwork? Many people believe that NFT is not a good way to sell artwork because a lot of electricity is consumed for making an NFT. Do you want to create your own mobile app someday? If yes, what would that be, and what will people use it for? T here is a very useful but strange number in mathematics represented by the Greek alphabet π (pronounced as the word ‘pie’). The number starts as 3.141592653589793... and continues without end. Swiss researchers have recently spent 108 days calculating the value of π to 62.8 trillion digits. This is a new record. The previous world record was 50 trillion digits. What is π in mathematics? The circle is an important shape in geometry. No matter how big a circle is, if you divide its circumference (the distance around the edge of the circle) by the diameter (the largest distance between two points on a circle), you will get the same number 3.141592653589793… As this number can never be written completely, mathematicians have been using the symbol π in place of the number. What is the use of π ? The simplest use of πis to calculate the area of a circle. The area of a circle = π r2 , whereristheradius ofthecircle. However, πhas many more applications. It is used in most calculations for building and construction, telecommunications, music, determining the path of spacecraft and the size of planets and other objects in the universe. Why did scientists calculate the value of π to trillions of digits? An approximate value of π (which is taken as 3.14) can meet almost all calculation needs. Scientists say that the only reason for doing this is to set a benchmark using the power of the newest computers. It is just like athletes competing at the Olympic Games for setting newer world records that are not useful by themselves. • 17. 17 StudentEdge • October 2021 www.studentedge.in Money Matters W hile shopping for clothes, have you ever been confused about which size to choose? What does ‘size 14’ mean? How can ‘size S’ in one brand be the same as ‘size XS’ in another? Indians face a lot of problems when it comes to finding the right size of clothes. This is because all the brands follow size charts used in other countries. These charts divide sizes into small (S), medium (M), large (L) and extra-large (XL). To solve this problem, the government has launched a survey called INDIAsize. The project will prepare a new standardised size chart for Indian ready-to-wear clothing. T he Reserve Bank of India, for the first time, has constructed a composite Financial Inclusion Index (FI-Index) to capture the extent of financial inclusion across the country. The annual FI-Index for the financial year 2020-21 is 53.9 as against 43.4 for the financial year 2016-17. This means the country is progressing toward financial inclusion. What is FinancialInclusion? Financial inclusion means that every person in the country should easily be able to open bank accounts, borrow money, get insurance etc. Opening a bank account in cities is easy as there are many bank branches. It is difficult in villages as there are fewer bank branches which are far off. Similarly, it is easy for large companies to borrow money from banks but difficult for small businesses. What does the Financial Inclusion Index (FI-Index) show? Financial inclusion is needed to make surethateverypartofthecountrydevelops equally. It also makes sure that all citizens are progressing well. The FI-index shows how much of the country is financially included. It studies how easily different parts of society can do their banking, investments, insurance, postalandpension activities. The FI-index score is measured on a scale of 0 to 100 – zero means no financial inclusion and 100 means complete RBI introduces the Financial Inclusion Index(FI-Index): What is it? Power Words Access (n.) The option to use or get something from a place Inclusion (n.) Being involved or included in something Index (n.) A number to measure something financial inclusion. The index shows how many people have easy access to good- quality money-related services, how many they can use etc. The new report shows that most of the country is still not financially included. But the score has become better compared to 2017. The RBI believes that services like the Aadhar card, online payment systems, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana etc., have helped more people use money- related services. Background information Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is the national mission for financially including all citizens. It allows people to easily open different bank accounts, get pension, insurance etc. Financial year A financial year (FY) is a one-year period used to make reports on money-related matters and plans to spend money. The FY is different for different countries. In India, the financial year starts on 1st April and ends on 31st March of the next year. For example, FY 2020 started on 1st April 2020 and ended on 31st March 2021. For every yes, add the points that are written beside the box. The total will be your Financial Inclusion Index! India’s Own Clothing Size Chart Coming Soon Power Words Standardise (v.) To make all the things of one type the same Do you think India needs its own size chart? Or do you think it will create confusion for all the different brands? Give a reason for your answer. How willthe new size chart help? The Indian body type is different from that of people from other countries. The new size chart will have numbers identifying specific body sizes. Safe 3D technology will scan the whole body of people taking the survey. The new size chart will then be used by clothing brands to make clothes that fit Indians perfectly. Worksheet : MM027
