2. It is the practice of
increasing efficiency with
which buildings use
resources- energy, water
and materials- while
reducing building
impacts on human health
and environment.
4. • LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design),
BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) and Green
Globes are popular green building assessment and rating
systems used around the world.
• Sustainability being a top priority now, MENA region and
countries like Qatar, UAE and Lebanon have come up with their
own green building rating system.
• Qatar's Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) is
termed as the world's most comprehensive green building rating
system.

6. TERI Himalayan Centre,
Mukteshwar
Constructed in Latey Bunga, Mukteshwar, 2300 meters above
the sea level, is the TERI’s Himalayan Centre.
The Centre is spread over 7.5 hectares of land at a mean
alleviation of 7100 feet (2164 meters) above sea level.
It was originally a potato seed farm.
In addition to a residential wing, this TERI Centre boasts a state-
of-the-art conference hall, complete with a meeting area, rest
rooms and Internet facility.
7. ARCHITECTURE
• The architecture of the building reflects the local style.
• The orientation of the building is south-east, which makes it constantly
exposed to sunlight.
• Glare-free sunlight is enjoyed because of judicious planned corridors in
front of the main habitable spaces.

8. Landscaping and Lighting
• The landscaping has been adequately designed- trees have
been planted on the northern side of the building to provide a
buffer against cold winds.
• Furthermore, each suite comes attached with unique solar
passive features known as ‘sun-spaces’.
• These enhance heat gain by day and emit it by night, when
it is required.
9. Renewable energy systems
• Renewable energy systems in the form of photovoltaic solar panels
have been integrated into the roof of the utility building and
conference hall to meet a portion of the electrical requirements.
• An effective solar water heating system is in place to meet the hot
water requirements of the building’s inhabitants.
• In the absence of sufficient sunlight, battery banks provide a power
back-up of three days.
• Fiberglass panels in the ceilings and walls act as insulators,
preserving heat and improving acoustics.
