Suzlon One Earth, Pune
Suzlon One Earth, Pune
This significantly unique office is designed by Christopher Charles, Pune based
architect and has received LEED Platinum rating in 2010. He and his partner
came up with the concept “Office in the garden”. Spread over 10 acres, this
magnificent structure is one of the largest green building projects of the
country and is also one of the India’s first buildings to be LEED (Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design) certified.
Suzlon One Earth, Pune
• Suzlon one earth is 100% powered by onsite and offsite renewable sources.
• The campus has 18 hybrid wind turbines that fulfil 7% of the total energy consumption, the
the rest of energy demand is met from offsite wind turbines.
• The structure is designed in a way to ensure maximum daylight exposure thereby reducing
reducing artificial lighting consumption.
• The infrastructure within the campus is designed to enable water percolation and thereby
control storm water runoff thus, contributing towards an increased water table level.

company, 'powering a greener tomorrow.
• The architect relied exclusively on non-toxic and recycled materials.
• A million S.F. of ground plus two levels in a 10.4 acre urban setting achieved a LEED
Platinum and TERI GRIHA 5 Star certification with 8 percent of its annual energy
generated on-site through photovoltaic panels and windmills with a total incremental
cost of about 11%.
Suzlon One Earth, Pune
Ratings and techiniques:
• 154 KW of electricity is produced on site (80%
wind and 20% photovoltaic).
• All other energy (4MW) is produced in the
client's wind mill farms. With 92% (4 MW)
being consumed by the project is sustainable
energy making this a Zero Energy Project.
• Lighting of individual offices is controlled by
combined daylight and occupancy sensors.
• Sixty five percent of energy is saved by use of
LED outdoor light systems in comparison to
conventional scheme.
• 30 to 40% reduction in operating cost, due to

• Suzlon One Earth derives its inspiration from large Indian historical campuses like
Fatehpur Sikri and the Meenakshi Temple complex in Madurai.
• the building architecture has borrowed elements of critical rationalism, with over
hangs, louvers, pergolas, courtyards, water and natural light permeation.

campuses in the world, some of the features making it a building are:

panels and photovoltaic cells
•Rainwater harvesting facilities with on-site water treatment and recycling facilities
•On-site organic waste converter
•‘Office in garden’ design concept which harvests maximum daylight in work spaces and
common areas
•Reduction of approximately 35% in operating cost due to energy and water cost savings, a
benefit that is transferred to customers through increased investment in technology.

•The building houses 2600
employees and has been planned on
460 acres of land.
• Due to its highly acclaimed green building achievements, the building has been acknowledged by
researchers in Germany and the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab as one of the 'Best Practices
Guide for High Performance Indian Office Buildings’.
• Highlights of the project
• LEED NC- Platinum
• Glass used-Vision Panel: SKN 444 (Futura) in (6mm - 16mm argon gap - 6mm) combination.
-Daylight Panel: PLT T (Pristine White) in (6mm - 12mm - 6mm)
• Energy Efficiency- 56% savings from the base case was achieved.
• Daylighting - 70% of the overall floor plate was daylight with daylight panel.
-100% of the work area is perfectly daylighted.
• Additional points achieved through glass - Regional material: Glass manufactured in
sriperumbudur plant and processed near by the project site.
- Recycled material: Glass is 100% recyclable. Cullet glass (broken glass) is used for glass
manufacturing. The percentage of broken glass is 18% of which 6% is sourced from post-consumer
waste.
• Other Design Features
- Radiant Cooling exploited for one the blocks.
- Radiant cooling found more efficient than normal cooling.
- Water use reduction by 48%.
- Low flow faucets & water closets.
- Over 80% of the construction waste diverted to landfills.
- Low VOC adhesives, paints and coatings.
- Treated waste water used for irrigation & air conditioning makeup.
• Role of Glass
- The combined use of PLT TG and SKN 444 II - high performance double glazed Saint-Gobain Glass
has been coupled up with the ideal orientation of the building, limiting the facades opening to the East
and West (where the direct morning and evening sun strike).
- The long faces of the building have been oriented towards north and south with shading devices
provided adeptly, especially towards the south.
- The narrow floor plate of 16m made it possible for 84% of the regularly occupied spaces to have
adequate day-light.
• Energy Consumption
- The building is 40% more efficient than the globally accepted ASHRAE standard. While the ASHRAE
standards for heat gain is 0.9W/sqft, SDB1 managed a .4W/sqft.
- The building has an efficient envelope - with a double walled insulation and an insulated roof with
reflective tiles. The heat gain of the envelope has been calculated to a 1W/sqft.
• Role of Glass
- The combined use of PLT TG and SKN 444 II - high performance double glazed Saint-Gobain Glass
has been coupled up with the ideal orientation of the building, limiting the facades opening to the East
and West (where the direct morning and evening sun strike).
- The long faces of the building have been oriented towards north and south with shading devices
provided adeptly, especially towards the south.
- The narrow floor plate of 16m made it possible for 84% of the regularly occupied spaces to have
adequate day-light.
• Material
-18% of the total value of materials in the building has been made out of recycled materials. By
regionally manufacturing 38% of the total project material by cost, the minimisation on transportation
has led to reduced pollution

This means that this is a building with zero net energy consumption where the total
amount of energy used in the premises on an annual basis is more or less equal to
the amount of renewable energy created on the site.

Adoption of energy efficient ‘chilled beam’ system of air conditioning has resulted in reduction
of energy conservation by 40%.
This is an innovative air conditioning system, where air conditioning is done by air flow through
diffusers and chilled water is circulated right up to the diffuser points.

Chilled beams are used in the building. Room temperature maintained is 26 degree
Celsius. Chilled beams with drain pans are used to drain out water droplets due to
the condensation during monsoon.
160 TR of air conditioning load of the building is met through chilled beam system.
GEOTHERMAL HEAT EXCHANGE
• There are 180 vertical bores at the
Depth of 80 meter all along the
Building Premises. Minimum 3
meter distance is maintained
between any two bores.
• Each bore is lowered with HDPE
pipe U-loop (32mm outer Dia.) and
grouted with Bentonite Slurry.
• Each U-Loop is connected to MS
Header Pipe(100mm Dia.)which
finally joins the Condenser Water
Line in Plant Room.
• Condenser hot water is sent at
100°F (37.8° C) & back at 900 F
(32.2° C).
• One U-Loop has 0.9 TR Heat
Rejection capacity, so all together
160 TR of Heat rejection is obtained
without using a cooling tower.
• Enormous water saving since no
make up water is required.
• • Make up water pumping &
treatment cost get eliminated.
• • Saves cooling tower fan energy.

•UPVC windows with hermetically sealed double using
low heat transmittance index glass.
•Use of high reflectance terrace tiles for low heat
ingress.
•Avoided aluminum as it has high embedded
energy

FALG (Fly Ash Lime Gypsum) bricks and AAC blocks are used in the
construction. Instead of clay bricks.

  • 3. Suzlon One Earth, Pune This significantly unique office is designed by Christopher Charles, Pune based architect and has received LEED Platinum rating in 2010. He and his partner came up with the concept “Office in the garden”. Spread over 10 acres, this magnificent structure is one of the largest green building projects of the country and is also one of the India’s first buildings to be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.

Suzlon One Earth, Pune • Suzlon one earth is 100% powered by onsite and offsite renewable sources. • The campus has 18 hybrid wind turbines that fulfil 7% of the total energy consumption, the the rest of energy demand is met from offsite wind turbines. • The structure is designed in a way to ensure maximum daylight exposure thereby reducing reducing artificial lighting consumption. • The infrastructure within the campus is designed to enable water percolation and thereby control storm water runoff thus, contributing towards an increased water table level. Ratings and techiniques: • Suzlon Energy Limited, a world-leading wind energy company based in Pune India. • The architect, pledged to create the greenest office in India. Living the motto of the company, 'powering a greener tomorrow. • The architect relied exclusively on non-toxic and recycled materials. • A million S.F. of ground plus two levels in a 10.4 acre urban setting achieved a LEED Platinum and TERI GRIHA 5 Star certification with 8 percent of its annual energy generated on-site through photovoltaic panels and windmills with a total incremental cost of about 11%.

Suzlon One Earth, Pune Ratings and techiniques: • 154 KW of electricity is produced on site (80% wind and 20% photovoltaic). • All other energy (4MW) is produced in the client's wind mill farms. With 92% (4 MW) being consumed by the project is sustainable energy making this a Zero Energy Project. • Lighting of individual offices is controlled by combined daylight and occupancy sensors. • Sixty five percent of energy is saved by use of LED outdoor light systems in comparison to conventional scheme. • 30 to 40% reduction in operating cost, due to to energy savings and water savings at 30%.

Other ‘Green features’ of One Earth:- A LEED Platinum and GRIHA 5 star certified building, One Earth is one of greenest corporate campuses in the world, some of the features making it a building are: •100% powered by on-site and off-site renewable energy including hybrid wind turbines, solar panels and photovoltaic cells •Rainwater harvesting facilities with on-site water treatment and recycling facilities •On-site organic waste converter •‘Office in garden’ design concept which harvests maximum daylight in work spaces and common areas •Reduction of approximately 35% in operating cost due to energy and water cost savings, a benefit that is transferred to customers through increased investment in technology. Ltd. •Location - Pocharam, Hyderabad, India •Project Year - Completed in Sep 2010. • Green consultant - EDS •The building houses 2600 employees and has been planned on 460 acres of land. • Due to its highly acclaimed green building achievements, the building has been acknowledged by researchers in Germany and the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab as one of the 'Best Practices Guide for High Performance Indian Office Buildings’.
  • 10. • Highlights of the project • LEED NC- Platinum • Glass used-Vision Panel: SKN 444 (Futura) in (6mm - 16mm argon gap - 6mm) combination. -Daylight Panel: PLT T (Pristine White) in (6mm - 12mm - 6mm) • Energy Efficiency- 56% savings from the base case was achieved. • Daylighting - 70% of the overall floor plate was daylight with daylight panel. -100% of the work area is perfectly daylighted. • Additional points achieved through glass - Regional material: Glass manufactured in sriperumbudur plant and processed near by the project site. - Recycled material: Glass is 100% recyclable. Cullet glass (broken glass) is used for glass manufacturing. The percentage of broken glass is 18% of which 6% is sourced from post-consumer waste.
  • 11. • Other Design Features - Radiant Cooling exploited for one the blocks. - Radiant cooling found more efficient than normal cooling. - Water use reduction by 48%. - Low flow faucets & water closets. - Over 80% of the construction waste diverted to landfills. - Low VOC adhesives, paints and coatings. - Treated waste water used for irrigation & air conditioning makeup.
  • 12. • Role of Glass - The combined use of PLT TG and SKN 444 II - high performance double glazed Saint-Gobain Glass has been coupled up with the ideal orientation of the building, limiting the facades opening to the East and West (where the direct morning and evening sun strike). - The long faces of the building have been oriented towards north and south with shading devices provided adeptly, especially towards the south. - The narrow floor plate of 16m made it possible for 84% of the regularly occupied spaces to have adequate day-light. • Energy Consumption - The building is 40% more efficient than the globally accepted ASHRAE standard. While the ASHRAE standards for heat gain is 0.9W/sqft, SDB1 managed a .4W/sqft. - The building has an efficient envelope - with a double walled insulation and an insulated roof with reflective tiles. The heat gain of the envelope has been calculated to a 1W/sqft.

INTRODUCTION • Project of ministry of environment and forests for construction of new office building at new delhi. • The basic design concept of the project is to make the net zero energy green building. • PLOT AREA:9565sq m • MAXIMUM GROUND COVERAGE:30% • F.A.R:200 • HEIGHT:35m • Built-up area : 3,1400 m2 • (18726 m2 – superstructure & 12675 m2- Basement) • Year of completion : 2013 India’s first net zero building This means that this is a building with zero net energy consumption where the total amount of energy used in the premises on an annual basis is more or less equal to the amount of renewable energy created on the site.

CHILLED BEAMS INDUCTION UNITS Chilled Water Hot Water Total room mixing is achieved through Convection currents within the space Primary air ventilation from Dedicated Outdoor Air Source Adoption of energy efficient ‘chilled beam’ system of air conditioning has resulted in reduction of energy conservation by 40%. This is an innovative air conditioning system, where air conditioning is done by air flow through diffusers and chilled water is circulated right up to the diffuser points.
  • 36. CHILLED BEAM INSTALLED AT SITE 23 Flexible Duct (6 Inch dia.) Chilled Beam Drain Pipe (¾” dia.) Chilled Water Return Pipe (½” dia.) Supply Air Induced Air Chilled Water Supply Pipe (½” dia.) Chilled beams are used in the building. Room temperature maintained is 26 degree Celsius. Chilled beams with drain pans are used to drain out water droplets due to the condensation during monsoon. 160 TR of air conditioning load of the building is met through chilled beam system.
  • 37. GEOTHERMAL HEAT EXCHANGE • There are 180 vertical bores at the Depth of 80 meter all along the Building Premises. Minimum 3 meter distance is maintained between any two bores. • Each bore is lowered with HDPE pipe U-loop (32mm outer Dia.) and grouted with Bentonite Slurry. • Each U-Loop is connected to MS Header Pipe(100mm Dia.)which finally joins the Condenser Water Line in Plant Room. • Condenser hot water is sent at 100°F (37.8° C) & back at 900 F (32.2° C). • One U-Loop has 0.9 TR Heat Rejection capacity, so all together 160 TR of Heat rejection is obtained without using a cooling tower. • Enormous water saving since no make up water is required. • • Make up water pumping & treatment cost get eliminated. • • Saves cooling tower fan energy.
