2. Space
The concept of space is about two things:
1. Where things are located on the surface of the Earth
Earth and …
2. How a space is managed and organised by people, or
how things are distributed across a space.
All places have a spatial location, which we can refer to specifically,
or by its relation to another place. Different aspects of our
environment, both manmade and natural, are distributed across
space differently – they might be clustered, scattered or organised
like in grids or lines.
3. Space & Maps:
Maps are the most common
tool for communicating
information about space –
for example, the map here
tells us one of the two pieces
of information – which is it –
type 1 or 2?
Info Type 1 – Spatial location.
Australia is located in the
southern hemisphere. It lies
south of Indonesia and North
of Antarctica, and is
surrounded by the Indian
Ocean to the west and the
Pacific to the east.
Info Type 2 – Distribution.
Most of Australia’s population
is distributed in clusters along
the coastline, where nearly all
the country’s major cities have
developed.
4. Place
within spaces – there are
“places”
A PLACE is an area on the
Earth’s surface
which is identified (named) and
has meaning for people.
Places include specific cities,
suburbs, towns and
neighbourhoods as well as the
various types of places like
mountain, coastal or polar
environments.
Places have an
influence on
people’s lives and
their identities,
depending on which
place they come
from.
5. Places are different – for example:
Places we might describe:
A local suburb
A capital city
An international city
A holiday destination
A country town
6. To communicate information about
the space and place of your Asian
country – you will be using mapping
What can you remember about the essential
elements of a Map?
What elements must you include?
What conventions (standards) do we use when
we create maps?
7. There are Six Essential Elements
that are included in Maps
