Learning objectives
At the end of the session learners will be able to
 Mention the mechanism and different type of copper T
 Mention the purposes and advantages and disadvantages of
copper T
 Explain the eligibility criteria of copper T insertion
2
Introduction
• Copper T is an intrauterine device made of
plastic and copper
• It is used for contraception and family
planning
• It is also used for emergency contraception(5
days after intercourse)
• It is highly effective reversible family planning
methods
3
Mechanism
• Act primarily by preventing fertilization
• Copper ions decrease sperm motility and
function by altering the uterine and
tubal fluid environment, thus preventing sperm
from reaching the fallopian tubes and fertilizing
the egg.
• The device also stimulates foreign body reaction
in the endometrium that releases
macrophages and prevents implantation.

Types
• Earlier devices: Cu-7
Cu T 200
• Newer devices: Cu T 220 C
Cu T 380 A (2002,
NFWP,10YRS)

5. In monogamous relationship
6. Willing to check IUD tail
Use : during or within 10 days of menstruation- uterine cavity is
relaxed, insertion is easy, contractions are minimum so
expulsion chance less.
12
Advantages:
Effective and reversible method
Not complex process in insertion, though supervised
Inexpensive if duration is considered
Free of side effects(metabolic)
One time motivation reqired
Highest continuation rate
Disadvantages:
• Contraindication : Absolute
Suspected pregnancy/ PID/ Genital Bleeding/ CA of genital tract/
previous ectopic
Relative – anemia/ menorrhagia/ purulent cervical discharge/ h/o
PID / Distortion of uterine cavity/ un motivated person
13
• Side effects:
1. Bleeding
2. Pain
3. Pelvic infections
4. Uterine perforation
5. Ectopic pregnancy
6. Expulsion – partial or complete

• Follow up : examined after her first menstrual cycle, then on
third menstrual period, and after that after 6-12 months
interval
To motivate/ confirm presence of IUD/ diagnose or treat any
complication.

Take home message
• Copper T is a safe , highly effective , reversible
family planning method
• Cu T 380 A currently used in national
programme
• Can be used as post-coital contraceptive
methods
• Insertion required supervision
15
Contd…..
• Can be used in lactating mother also
• Low failure rate
• Low expulsion rate
• Avoid in PID, STI/RTI patient
• Required follow up and motivation
16
Problem exercises
• All of the following are contraindication for Copper T except:
1.PID
2. DUB
3.P/h/o Ectopic pregnancy

Ans: 4
• Which Cu T is used in NFWP recently?
