Driverless Driving
During the last 30 years, the global car market has undergone significant changes in driver
experience due to technological progress (Knight, 2012). Today, a typical middle–class car comes
with standard features, such as power windows, automatic gearbox and electronic stability program
(Handmer, 2014; Knight, 2012). High–end automobiles can be bought with intelligent features like
automatic start–stop mechanism enhanced cruise control, active lane assistance and self–parking
technology (Handmer, 2014; Knight 2014). These innovations make driving more comfortable, but
still require human interaction (Knight, 2012). However, todays' connected cars and increasing
technological progress pave the way for fully autonomous vehicles (Handmer, 2014). ... Show more

However, before driverless vehicles enter the market three main challenges relating to technology,
legal and consumers lie ahead (IHS Automotive, 2014). Software reliability and cyber security must
be guaranteed (Kelly & CNN, 2014), a legal framework for self–driving vehicles regarding
insurance and liability has to be established (Kelly & CNN, 2014) and consumers must be
convinced to accept driverless vehicles (IHS Automotive, 2014). Consumers may question, whether
driverless driving features will offer an overall better option than driving themselves. Taking into
account that failure of consumer acceptance entails considerable costs to companies (Chiesa &
Frattini, 2011). It is essential for organizations to understand under which circumstances customers
accept autonomous cars. Acceptance and future use of new technologies are frequently subject to
tradeoffs between uncertain benefits and costs of adopting the new invention (Venkatesh, Morris,
Davis, & Davis, 2003). Several studies have researched the acceptance of driver assistant systems
(DAS) (Adell, 2009; Arndt, 2004; Arndt & Engeln, 2008; Huth & Gelau, 2013). However, so far no
studies have explored users' acceptance of fully autonomous driving

Driverless Vehicles Essay
In recent discussions of growing technology, a controversial issue has been whether we are ready for
the advancements of driverless vehicles. On the one hand, some argue that these advancements have
already proven that we are ready. On the other hand, however, others argue that we need to have
more experience with the technology before we can be ready. In sum, then, the issue is are we ready
or not for driver–less cars. While others think that driverless vehicles can't be trusted yet without a
commission to help lawmakers with regulating the vehicles and government officials that know
more about this technology to better watch over it, I believe that we are ready for this new evolving
automobile because driverless vehicles already has too much potential beginning with its self–
automated breaking system and warnings. Google has announced that their self–driving cars will be
on the road in two to five years. The company hopes that they will in America by 2020 but even if
they are not people wonder if they will be safe and if we are ready to share the road with these
vehicles. I believe that we will be ready for self–driving cars on the roads because we already have
vehicles with system to prevent collisions such as early warnings and automatic lane changing from
tesla motors. John Villasenor is a professor of electrical engineering and public policy at the

The trap oxidizer development in Greece is one of many scientific research done to reduce vehicle
emissions. The carbon dioxide capture using nanostructured membranes is also another way to
check the vehicle emissions. In this method single gas separation experiments were carried out using
silica modified membranes to study the behavior of individual gas permeation at different pressures
and temperatures.
1. Working of nanostructures membranes in capturing CO2 emission.
Design and fabrication of porous membranes comprises of many layers of different materials
namely: Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3), Titanium Oxide (TiO2), Zirconium Oxide (ZrO2), Silicon
Dioxide (SiO2), Silicon Carbide, Zeolite, or a mixture of two materials applied on an underlying
porous stainless steel. The manner in which gas molecules flow is generally influenced by three
factors: The gas properties, morphology of the membrane and the material used for membrane
design. The technology is environment friendly, quite economical and efficient. It is applicable to all
forms of CO2 removal from other gases. Nanotechnology is being greatly used in this method of
carbon capture. Since 2003 vehicles have been built with on–board communications network
protocol called CAN (Controlled Area Network).CANbus is basically a bridge between the different
modules and how they communicate with each other via the serial data

Truth about Autonomous Cars Vehicles that drive themselves is a concept that is often thought about
in futuristic movies or science fiction novels. Throughout, history mankind has been fascinated with
robots and cars that could work without humans. Advanced technology is getting closer to making
these futuristic ideas the real thing. Living in an advanced technological time would society be ready
for this to happen and how far away is this from becoming a reality? One of the biggest challenges
facing autonomous cars is legal issues. As of right now computer technology and artificial
intelligence face numerous legal battles. Most people have heard of the technology that Google is
creating in an attempt to make a "driver–less" car. As the technology gets more attention in the news
Google's driverless car has become a very opinionated and sensitive topic. People often ask
questions like "What if Google's car hit someone? Who would be at fault for the accident Google or
the owner of the car?" These questions are currently being debated at the state and federal levels. As
of right now states are actively seeking to regulate autonomous cars much more than the federal
government is. Currently only California, Florida, Nevada and the District of Columbia have
successfully created

What Is A Self-Driving Car Autonomous?
The term autonomous refers to the capability of acting independently or having the freedom to do
so. A self–driving car is an autonomous car, which has the ability to sense its environment and
navigating without any human operations. These types of cars are built to make safe and smart
decisions on the road. In the past years, automobile companies have begun to introduce advanced
driver assistance systems that are capable of parking, switching lanes and breaking in case of
emergency on their own without drivers assistance. Automated vehicles are capable of maneuvering
through street traffic, other natural and manmade obstacles along the way. Therefore, this
technology might completely change the methods of transportation. Some companies are taking a
further step by creating their own version of driverless vehicles. Since 2009, Google has been
working on self–driving cars and testing them on city streets. Recently, Google has announced that
its self–driving cars had completed over 1 million miles of autonomous driving. Having a fully

Self–driving cars will allow those who are unable to drive to take on the road on their own.
According to the study conducted by processors at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee
and the University of Washington in Seattle, stated that energy consumption with self–driving cars
will in fact increase. Although the idea of having self–driving car is a good idea, it will likely attract
people who are currently unable to drive to take on the road on their own. While this is likely a good
idea for social good, "it promises to increase energy consumption by between 10 and 25 percent."
The researchers believe that the more free time we have on the road, the more people the cars will

How Smart Phones Helps Drivers On The Road
Have you ever been told by a family member or friend to no use your phone when driving, because
you can get into an accident? I know I have. For as long as I can remember, there has been a stigma
placed on phone usage while driving, and because of that stigma, some people view them as a
distraction, and nothing more. As a result, they miss out on the vast repertoire of features that could
actually be of help to them. Since the uprising of distracted driving accidents, all the good that smart
phones can do kind of goes unnoticed. But what a lot of people fail to realize, is that smart phones
have an abundance of features that can assist drivers on the road. Only when these features are used,
and people stop texting, checking social media, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Smart phone navigation systems are one of the many ways that they can assist drivers while on the
road. GPS navigation has evolved from simple turn by turn navigation, into something more.
Bartlett and Spinelli also mention a feature in which drivers can choose whether they want to detour
around certain obstructions like car accidents, lane closings, and obstructions of that nature.
Averting these types of obstructions gives the driver a much safer route to their destination, as well
as eliminates the threat of a possible collision, which tends to occur most frequently in those areas.
They state how this simplifies finding those trouble spots, and how it eliminates flicking through
various radio stations while trying to get traffic info, especially since the radio tends to focus on the
major accidents, and sometimes misses the other obstructions. Bartlett and Spinelli expand upon
this, and go into detail on how it works: With a traffic service, the navigation device will receive
periodic updates based on your driving path or (if entered) programmed destination. It can provide
on–screen alerts and even indicate the traffic flow rate. Usually the driver can tap a traffic icon to
receive info on how long the delay is, what type of obstruction (accident, construction, lane closing),
and then decide whether or not to detour around a trouble–spot. Also, general traffic in the area can
often be displayed by going into the menu of the

Over the past few weeks, I have been with Intel Corporation understanding their Internet of Things
(IoT) product roadmaps from security, healthcare, retail, energy, smart cities, and of most interest is
leveraging IoT to extend the customer experience. This week I will be in the Bay Area with Intel's
Autonomous Vehicle (AV) team getting a deeper dive into their vision for the future of mobility.
Across the board, one of the things that have impressed me most with Intel's overall IoT strategy is
their focus on experience, rather than just on technology – although the tech is impressive too.
Moving AV beyond just a science experiment
Intel and it's Mobileye division believes autonomous driving is not a just a product; it is an industry.
As the industry advances, Intel is working diligently to be the tip of the spear when it comes to
safety, technology, standards, and sustainability. Recently, Intel's Mobileye released a framework to
help automakers, technology companies, and regulators to understand the fundamental pillars of
safety assurance and economic scalability in this highly fragmented and heterogeneous marketplace.

The Problem Of Car Accidents
The common saying of "The chain is only as strong as the weakest link" serves a great resemblance
in many topics of the world today. Car accidents are similar, it takes one person to set off a chain
reaction of cars tumbling into each other and causing a catastrophe. Self Driving cars can take away
that chain reaction and save many lives. For example, in the United States alone there are 42,000
traffic–related deaths each year (Speksnijder 1). This number is more than it seems to be. With many
major companies all in the works to make autonomous cars a reality it can reduce these numbers to
practically zero, "Accidents are expected to decrease between 30%–80% once self–driving cars are
broadly available" (Surden 6). As stated in an article ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The majority of the 120–mile trip the driver is observing from the comfort of his sleeping quotes
(Cava n.pag). Although the driver can 't sleep all through the trip. The driver only drives when they
are not on the highways of America (Cava n.pag). The company was such a good idea that both the
founders and the company were bought out by Uber (Cava n.pag). Families with children would be
worried as to the safety of these vehicles. Meanwhile, Google is taking all this information into
consideration of what these parents are worried about. Their driverless cars are the most
sophisticated car in the entire world. This is how it works. Every car today has something called a
subsystem, subsystems are elements in the car that the driver can not control. For instance, airbag,
emergency braking, cruise control, automatic parking and lane keeping (Surden 4). These are also
called Advanced Driver Assistance Systems or ADAS(Surden 4), and can be found in almost every
brand new car on the roads today. Google car has an additional two subsystems, one for steering and
one for braking(Surden 4). This leaves the car that ability to steer and brake without the assistance
of a human entity holding the steering wheel. When it comes to how the car takes the information
and turns it into actions, for instance when there is a pedestrian and the car needs to stop. The car
runs all the information that it gathers through the car

Insurance, Liability, And Liability Essay
Insurance and Liability As previously noted, we anticipate that the instances of car accidents will
decrease with the use of HAVs. Nonetheless, car accidents are always a possibility and car accidents
with HAVs pose the unique question, "Is the driver liable or is the manufacturer liable?" HAVs will
ultimately develop into more autonomously functioning vehicles, operating without much human
assistance. If such an autonomously functioning car were part of a car accident, the manufacturer 's
liability would certainly increase. However, the first commercially available HAVs will involve the
vehicle sharing the driving responsibility with the human driver. Establishing liability in this gray
area is a challenge that Maryland will take on. Also, car insurance premiums will likely increase for
the consumer, which is an important consideration because that translates to less disposable income
in the pocket of the driver. Technology One of the primary concerns is ensuring a two–tier system
guaranteeing that if one system fails (i.e. the car's autonomous system), there is a warning system to
inform the driver to take control of the vehicle. The safety of the driver has to remain the number
one concern. The intricate technology used on HAVs is what makes their smart driving capabilities
work safely. Frequent software updates will be necessary so that the HAV can acknowledge new
roads and infrastructure.(cite: Anderson) If the HAV owner waits several months after being notified

Disadvantages Of Driverless Cars
"I'm on my way!" you tell your friend over the phone as you step into your car. "I'll be there in half
an hour!" You sit down and buckle up, absentmindedly opening the alarm app on your phone. You
set it to wake you up in thirty minutes, then relax into your seat, turn on the radio, and close your
eyes. How is this possible? Technology has advanced incredibly quickly over the last hundred years,
with developments such as the Internet and the smart phone. Along with this technology has come a
lot of developments in the robotics industry. Robotic surgeons, controlled by professionals, have
hands much steadier and more precise than a human could ever hope to mimick, increasing safety
and decreasing recovery time for surgery patients. Most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sensors like these protect against most accidents already, and make up for any amount of human
error that might put a driver in some amount of peril. The ultrasonic sensors tell the car whether or
not there are bumps on the road, or if it's approaching a curb, something a human is not always
capable of doing, and the lidar on top identifies lane markers and the edges of the road by bouncing
light off of them. Sensors on self–driving cars take out all the guess work usually involved in
driving a car out of the equation. While all of these sensors work together to steer the car away from
danger, occasionally, says Olivia Solon, data amassed by all the sensors can conflict with each other,
resulting in a dangerous situation referred to as "sensor fusion." This fusion of sensors has already
resulted in a fatal crash involving a tester of a self–driving Tesla car; the sensors produced
conflicting data, and as a result mistook a truck for an overhead road sign, causing the car to run
directly into the truck. Therefore, while these numerous sensors are instrumental to the driverless
car, they are still in development and not yet safe to trust with human lives. GPS tracking and
positioning is also incorporated into every automated car, for the self–evident purpose of informing
driver and car where they are and where they're going. Some cars

Abstract:
In order to cope up with the growing problem of traffic congestion several means and methods have
been implemented. For reducing this problem,an efficient method for traffic monitoring can be
implemented by providing the availability of the parking spaces in advance. Since there exist no
such system we intend to develop one using sensors and RFIDs.In proposed system, we consider car
park equipped with sensors(IR) which checks for the availability of parking slots and updates the
information periodically. This updated information is provided to the user via an android application.
Using this application user gets directed towards the parking slot by using the shortest path

A Brief Note On Ford 's Autonomous Car
Ford's Autonomous Car Most of the automotive companies believe that the next generation of cars
are going to be autonomous vehicles, but not all of them have the same opinion about it. Some
companies want to bring a fully autonomous car to reality, which wouldn't need any human
interaction to drive the car, while other ones are interested in driverless cars, which need humans to
drive them. Both "autonomous" and "driverless" concepts give cars more control over themselves,
and both aim to give more comfort for mankind, thus providing an easier life for drivers and
passengers, but the idea of an autonomous car on the roads raises some questions about the safety of
it and the responsibility over a car like this. A driverless car can have most of the autonomous
features, it just needs someone to drive it, and then the control would also be from a person that
would be more watchful and take responsibilities over the car. Ford is going to launch an
autonomous car. The company already has a semi–autonomous one in market, the Fusion hybrid,

Driverless Cars In The Future
In the United States, driver error is the primary factor to blame for automobile deaths. According to
the National Safety Council, in 2015, over thirty–eight thousand people died in car crashes. On
average, that is 194 people killed a day. It is unacceptable to lose so many lives each year to this
tragedy. Unfortunately, society has accepted this as the price of convenient transportation. However,
there is an alternative. In recent years, the feasibility of affordable driverless cars is becoming a
reality. The pace of current progress points to a future where driverless cars will replace humans at
the wheel. Corporations like Google and Tesla are road testing autonomous vehicles. Google's

Computers are already trusted to keep our cars from slipping and prevent wheels from locking up.
Using computers to drive us around is a logical next step to take as the technology matures. As the
industry advances, driverless cars will revolutionize life and make travel safer. Drunk driving can be
eliminated as computers can take over for intoxicated humans. Elderly people will be able to move
about as they please, without special assistance. As these systems become more advanced, and
reliable, productivity will increase as less time is spent in traffic jams. According to USA Today,
deaths from car accidents cost society nearly 900 billion a year. As driverless cars become more
affordable, and better drivers then humans, the annual cost to society will decrease. As the lives

The Dangers Of Cell Phones
The Dangers of Cell Phones Are cell phone dangerous? Are they a distraction? The answer to both
those questions is Yes! Cell phones have advanced greatly since the turn of the century. With the
advancement of cellular technology cell phones have become a staple in our every day lives. Have
they become a dangerous distraction? Our kids are spending more time with the cell phones than
their families and friends. Cell phones have been a major factor in 52% of car accidents from 2009
to 2011. With the advancement of cellular technology cell phones have become miniaturized
transportable computers. With one handheld device you can now send: Emails, text messages, phone
calls and leave voice mails. It used to take multiple devices to accomplish these actions. To check
any missed calls you would have had to wait until the end of the day when you got home to see any
missed calls or voicemails. Now you don't even have to miss a call, your cell phone can literally go
with you almost anywhere. Cell phones are a major distraction, however they do have some good
qualities. They keep people and their worked linked at all times. Cell phones also keep parents and
their children connected. There's no more wondering where your children are. With a simple call to
their phone you no know at the touch of a button. With all the connectivity cell phones provide us in

acceleration, and braking (Thrun, 2010). They are designed to sense their surroundings with
techniques of artificial intelligence, sensors with a 360° of view, radar, and global positioning
systems, so that the driver is not expected to constantly monitor the roadway while operating in
self–driving mode. Advanced control systems analyze the sensory information gathered to plan the

Level 2 Combined Function This level involves automation of at least two primary control functions
designed to work in unison to relieve the driver of control of those functions. An example is
adaptive cruise control in combination with lane centering. Level 3 Limited Self–Driving Vehicles at
this level of automation are able to operate autonomously for some portions of the journey. Transfer
of control back to the human driver happens with some warning. The Google car is an example of
limited self–driving automation. Level 4 Full Self–Driving The vehicle is designed to perform all
safety–critical driving functions and monitor roadway conditions for an entire trip without manual
control at any time during the trip. 3.2 Advantages And Limits There are many potential advantages
to using a driverless car instead of a traditional human–controlled vehicle: Reduction in car
accidents. Most car accidents are caused by driver errors, but the autonomous system can monitor a
broader range of sensors and react faster than a human driver. More efficient transportation due to
higher speed limit Increase in road capacity and reduction in traffic congestion due to narrowed
safety gap and intelligent parking technology. Occupants in an autonomous car will not be
constrained due to age, license, disabilities, intoxication and other factors. Although we can benefit

Advantages Of Driverless Car
A driverless car or robotic car is a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment and navigating
without human input. It is known as autonomous car. In May 2017, automated cars permitted on
public roads but not yet fully autonomous since they all require human driver at the wheel who is
ready at a moment's notice to take control of the vehicle. There are many techniques to detect the
surroundings of autonomous cars like radar, GPS, laser light, odometry (the use of data from motion
sensors to estimate change in position over time), and computer vision. To identify appropriate
navigation paths, as well as obstacles and relevant signage, advanced control systems interpret
sensory information. Autonomous cars have control systems that can analyze sensory data to
distinguish between different cars on the road, which is very useful in planning a path to the desired
destination. The levels of autonomy are count from 0 to 5. The 0 level is for no automation. It is a
full–time performance by the human driver of all aspects of the dynamic driving task, even when
enhanced by warning or intervention systems such as cars from 20 years ago. For level 1, it is called

Avoiding A Future Of Crippling Car Congestion
AVOIDING A FUTURE OF CRIPPLING CAR CONGESTION
Bill Ford, the chairman of Ford Motors, spoke at the 2012 Mobile world congress where he outlined
a plan for connected cars to help avoid traffic congestion. Connected cars he explained are vehicles
linked to various mobile networks and intelligent systems and capable of M2M communication
(Efraim Turban, 2013). During his address in Barcelona, Ford explained to the delegates that the
number of cars on the world's roads is forecasted to grow from 1 billion now to up to 4 billion in the
next few years and The proposed solution to avoid the potential problem of a global gridlock due to
overcrowded road network is to create a global transportation network that utilizes communication

There should a drive to make cars talk to each other outside the same brand. They need to be
interconnected and they can't discriminate based on model. We need standardization while providing
competitive advantages of one brand over another, because at the end of the day this is what will
sways one consumer towards one particular brand. Bill Ford suggests that No one company or
industry will be able to solve the mobility issue alone and the speed at which solutions take hold will
be determined largely by customer acceptance of new technologies. This blueprint sets short and
long term goals for significant reductions in the company's global environment footprint, and seeks
to visualize what the transport networks will look like in 2025 and beyond. Such as (Ford, 2012):
1. Near term goals: 5–7 years
– Ford is attempting to develop innovative in car mobile communications and driver interfaces
– The Developmental of vehicle to vehicle warning systems are also in progress
– Ford is also developing an efficient driving experience with limited autonomous functions which
has better connectivity. – There is progress being made in the development and definition of new
vehicle ownership models like the zip car initiative.
2. Mid Term goals (2017 – 2025)
– Ford will be introducing semi–autonomous driving technology in the next couple of years.

outrageous cost of its self–driving car prototype, which is $170,000. Shashua and Aviram do not
believe it could be commercialized at such a price. Also, the mapping system would involve an
immense amount of driving and is extremely unrealistic on a global scale. There is also a possibility
of road construction, changing roads and highways making the memory saved in the systems
inaccurate for the mapping system used by Google. In addition, Shashua and Aviram believe that it
is not to Google's advantage to attempt such huge leaps into the future so soon. Lastly, the other
potential competition that could challenge Mobileye would be OmniVision. This company develops
digital–imaging solutions for a multitude of markets besides automotive, including entertainment,
medical imaging, PC cameras, mobile phones, and security and surveillance. OmniVision has
technology such as a 360 degree view, lane change detection, and autonomous driving. The

correspond with actual situation. Therefore, it is essential to realise the differences between
traditional costing system and activity–based costing.
Comparison between traditional absorption costing system and ABC
Before ABC was introduced in 1980s, the traditional absorption costing system was commonly
design at a time when there was a narrow product range and the use of technology as a factor of
business environment was limited. Generally, the absorption costing means all of the manufacturing
costs are absorbed in unit, and its process involves allocation, apportionment and absorption of
overheads using overhead absorption rate (OAR).
Comparing absorption costing system with ABC, the primary difference between them is the
approach. Absorption costing is a traditional cost accounting method operating under the simple
system of allocating resources to products or services directly into units, while activity–based
costing is a

(2016) The advancement of this could permit changes to driving – without the requirement for
human supervision or operation, everybody in the car could be a passenger, or it could even drive
without any body at all. This could permit productivity and recreation time to be recovered from
drives, transport openness to be broadened for those not able to drive, and more noteworthy
movement efficiency. Autonomous could bring about a positive natural effect. Driving at more
steady speeds, with less quickening and braking, and faster routes could bring about lower carbon
emanations from driving. According to Cadie Thompson, driverless cars are designed to have almost
a superhuman–like ability to recognize the world around them because they use loads of sensors to
gather tons of data about their environment so that they can seamlessly operate in a constantly

NEW TECHNOLOGY IN A NEW WORLD!! INVEST TODAY!!!
In today's era technology, has begun to take over. Mankind has taken the extra step to turn those
once fictional movies into reality. There were once horror movies of cars driving themselves, fully
functioning robots, hover boards, and many more inventions that only people could dream about.
Over the past few years' companies have been making a drastic breakthrough to make life easier and
more enjoyable. One of the companies that have invested lots of time, money, and energy into
changing the world is Tesla.
Tesla is an American vehicle manufacturer, energy storage company, and solar panel manufacturer
headquartered in Palo Alto, California. Their goal is to make the world a better place to live while
cleaning up the environment. When you think of Tesla I'm sure that like many people the first thing
that comes to mind is electric vehicles. Tesla has been known to produce high efficient electric
vehicles and their prices are an indication of their quality.
Tesla is a for profit organization and they chose to give away their patented information about the
design of their electric cars to other car manufacturers so that they can also contribute to helping the
world. Some people may feel that this was a dumb decision by tesla to give away the one advantage
that made them stand out from the others. Even though other car manufacturers will have the

Fatigue Monitoring System (FMS)
By Alvin Kuan, Sarah Fink, Shian Su and Suliman Altaleb
1. Abstract
This paper presents some background briefing, implantation, ethical responsibility, and action plan
of FMS design plan. FMS is a model purposely designed to detect and measure fatigue variables,
i.e., blinking rate, yawning rate and head tilt for fatigue predictions. In addition, FMS will establish
a crude estimate of fatigue and warns the user if a threshold has been exceeded. This FMS will
provide real–time measurements of fatigue which, if integrated with good risk management practice,
will result in reduced and controlled recurrence of serious safety incidents. The focus the project is
to understand and appreciate the essential components in designing successful and commercially
viable device. This system employs non–invasive electrodes which are positioned specifically for
each of blinking and yawning tests in order to attain electrocardiogram signals accordingly. FMS is
also able to detect head nodding patterns via a gyro sensor specifically located to monitor axial
coordination of head.
1. Background
Fatigue results in an impaired decision–making and judgment, slowed reflexes and responses,
absent–mindedness, memory lapses etc. Fatigue is often a root cause of major accidents. Fatigue is
believed to be the reason of more than 20% of road fatalities in Victoria Fatigue–related accidents
are more likely to result in fatalities

BMW's aircraft engine plant was then forced to close, being that their only product at the time was
the IIIa aero–engine ("History of BMW", 2015). Upper management quickly began seeking other
alternatives which resulted in them obtaining a license with a very successful Berlin–based company
called Knorr–Bremse AG. This partnership was pursued in effort to begin manufacturing brake
systems as a response to survive the cessation of aircraft engine production. The contract was over a
ten year span and was intended to provide BMW with employment and profit until 1930 ("History
of BMW", 2015). This directional shift resulted in great advantage for BMW as manufacturing
power was allocated to BMW from Knorr–Bremse AG because they could not handle the demand
they were receiving for manufacturing in their own factories. This allowed BMW to be accessible
for governmental bodies to pursue contracted agreements. Bavarian trains were then fit and prepared
for Knorr brakes in which the Bavarian government contracted with BMW permitting them to be the
official Knorr brake producers of Bavaria because BMW was located in the homeland ("History of
BMW", 2015). Furthermore, these conditions caused the company to pursue greater avenues which
lead to the manufacturing of motorcycle engines. In 1921 BMW created the first motorized bicycle

The Advance Traveler Information Systems
The motive and idea proposed through this paper is to implement Advanced Traveler Information
Systems (ATIS) that is potential enough to provide solutions for problems encountered in cases of
both, informed and non–informed users. After several route–choice studies and investigations,
experts conclude that impact of elaborated and virtually supported information determine vast
difference in theoretical and methodological approach to ATIS. As an attempt to develop the
technologies appropriate to establish an Overall Intelligent Transportation System supported with
real–time and accurate data to make traveler destination/route choices a happy decision.
Generally both, descriptive or prescriptive concept of pre–trip traveler information has a positive

freeways properly and make better informed transit choices. En–route visual data and information
offer tested guidance, saves travel time, helps to avoid congestion, improves traffic performance and
provide more efficiency than paper maps, written instructions or previous traveler experiences
(BoozAllen & Hamilton, 1998). However, recent studies have revealed people's lack of awareness
about the system and its diminished usage.

A New Angle On Car Safety
According to Chris Urmson, "1.2 million people are killed on the world 's roads every year. In
America alone, 33,000 people are killed each year" (Urmson). Urmson is the Director of Self–
Driving Cars at Google, and in March of 2015 he presented a TED Talk in which he addressed
issues of car safety. In his presentation, Urmson goes on to explain that for over a century, America
has come up with ways to mitigate car safety issues. Manufacturers have specifically addressed the
fact that car drivers often err, and in so doing, create unsafe conditions for themselves and others on
the roads. To address this, vehicles have been revamped to be more structurally sound, and collision
safety features have been added, such as air bags and seatbelts. ... Show more content on

(Urmson). Driverless cars also have other sensors, including four radars, a GPS, an inertial
measurement unit, and a wheel encoder. The radars detect obstacles. The GPS, inertial measurement
unit, and the wheel encoder determine where autonomous vehicles are currently and track where
they go (Guizzo). Incorporating Vehicle–to–vehicle (V2V) communication in self–driving cars
would provide additional safety. V2V is the technology that allows cars to exchange information
such as speed, direction, location and other data with one another. This technology is also useful for
vehicles with drivers because it allows them to receive a warning of unexpected events and enables
them to react quickly, thus improving safety. For instance, if a driver ahead quickly presses the
brakes, nearby cars will get a warning that allows them to react promptly. If a car is speeding in a
curve, the driver in the car will get a warning that indicates that they're going too fast and need to
slow down. Vehicle–to–vehicle communication also allows roads to "talk" to cars about traffic jams,
road work, and road conditions. If there's black ice ahead, the driver will get a warning indicating
the hazard. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there could be

Satisfying Target Customer 's Needs
Satisfying Target Customer's Needs Many customers of electric vehicles need an affordable form of
transportation. GM has been able to satisfy this need with its affordable 2016 Spark EV starting at
$25,120 with a potential $7,500 tax credit (General Motors Company, n.d). This all–electric vehicle
allows consumers to purchase an affordable car that uses clean energy. GM also offers the affordable
hybrid Volt starting at $33,170, and plans to release the fully electric Bolt EV late 2017 starting at
$37,495 (Korosec, 2016). These electric cars provide customers with inexpensive alternatives to the
vehicles currently offered by Tesla. Tesla's Model S is its only sedan and has a starting price of
$66,000 (Tesla, n.d.). The Model X is Tesla's sport utility vehicle with a starting price of $74,000
(Manjoo, 2016). While Tesla's current models are significantly more expensive than GM's electric
vehicles, Tesla is releasing its all–electric Model 3 in 2017 at a starting price of $35,000, which is
more in line with the prices of GM's electric vehicles (Manjoo, 2016). Another need that consumers
are looking to satisfy is luxurious transportation. Tesla meets this need with every car they make.
The Model S is packed with autopilot capabilities that include parallel parking, lane changing, and a

A Closer Look At Autonomous Vehicles Essay
A Closer Look at Autonomous Vehicles Many great technological feats have been accomplished in
the past few years, one of the most notable would be the creation of self–driving cars. Along with
the topic of what can be done with this technology, there is also the topic of what should be done
with the technology from an ethical standpoint. Self–driving cars while not perfected are worth their
innumerous benefits, despite the current limitations and drawbacks. Every year there are numerous
incidents where the driver is responsible for a crash or even death. A self–driving car could be the
very solution necessary to solving the abundance of accidents that occur daily across the nation.
There are different levels of automation ranging on the amount of the drivers control of the vehicles.
This technology is already being implemented in creative and helpful ways, and has been
successfully tested. Self–driving cars are something that's new, it's something that has only just been
implemented in the past few years, and will be continually implemented and improved upon.
Currently autonomous cars are limited to actions such as parallel parking, brake assist, and lane
detection. In the near future experts are predicting fully autonomous self–driving cars with little to
no human interaction. Currently self–driving vehicles are described from levels 0–4, 0 being no
automated assistance, to level 4 where the car can "perform all safety‐critical driving functions and

Driverless Driving

  • 1. Driverless Driving During the last 30 years, the global car market has undergone significant changes in driver experience due to technological progress (Knight, 2012). Today, a typical middle–class car comes with standard features, such as power windows, automatic gearbox and electronic stability program (Handmer, 2014; Knight, 2012). High–end automobiles can be bought with intelligent features like automatic start–stop mechanism enhanced cruise control, active lane assistance and self–parking technology (Handmer, 2014; Knight 2014). These innovations make driving more comfortable, but still require human interaction (Knight, 2012). However, todays' connected cars and increasing technological progress pave the way for fully autonomous vehicles (Handmer, 2014). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, before driverless vehicles enter the market three main challenges relating to technology, legal and consumers lie ahead (IHS Automotive, 2014). Software reliability and cyber security must be guaranteed (Kelly & CNN, 2014), a legal framework for self–driving vehicles regarding insurance and liability has to be established (Kelly & CNN, 2014) and consumers must be convinced to accept driverless vehicles (IHS Automotive, 2014). Consumers may question, whether driverless driving features will offer an overall better option than driving themselves. Taking into account that failure of consumer acceptance entails considerable costs to companies (Chiesa & Frattini, 2011). It is essential for organizations to understand under which circumstances customers accept autonomous cars. Acceptance and future use of new technologies are frequently subject to tradeoffs between uncertain benefits and costs of adopting the new invention (Venkatesh, Morris, Davis, & Davis, 2003). Several studies have researched the acceptance of driver assistant systems (DAS) (Adell, 2009; Arndt, 2004; Arndt & Engeln, 2008; Huth & Gelau, 2013). However, so far no studies have explored users' acceptance of fully autonomous driving ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Driverless Vehicles Essay In recent discussions of growing technology, a controversial issue has been whether we are ready for the advancements of driverless vehicles. On the one hand, some argue that these advancements have already proven that we are ready. On the other hand, however, others argue that we need to have more experience with the technology before we can be ready. In sum, then, the issue is are we ready or not for driver–less cars. While others think that driverless vehicles can't be trusted yet without a commission to help lawmakers with regulating the vehicles and government officials that know more about this technology to better watch over it, I believe that we are ready for this new evolving automobile because driverless vehicles already has too much potential beginning with its self– automated breaking system and warnings. Google has announced that their self–driving cars will be on the road in two to five years. The company hopes that they will in America by 2020 but even if they are not people wonder if they will be safe and if we are ready to share the road with these vehicles. I believe that we will be ready for self–driving cars on the roads because we already have vehicles with system to prevent collisions such as early warnings and automatic lane changing from tesla motors. Carbon Emissions From Motor Vehicles For The Future REPORT ON LOWER CARBON EMISSIONS FROM MOTOR VEHICLES FOR THE FUTURE KARTIKEYA UPRETI Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering Loughborough University ABSTRACT The ever increasing carbon emissions from the automobiles all around the world has forced the incorporation of novel , more sustainable means of non–conventional fuels for the automobiles like the hybrid cars , solar vehicles , the use of gasohol and alcohol based fuels is also considered as an alternative for the conventional fuels and also the development of solar electric hybrid vehicle. There are a lot of possibilities and feasible solutions for lowering the carbon emissions from vehicles. CONTENTS 1. INTRODUCTION 2. THE METHODOLOGIES FOR LOW CARBON ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The trap oxidizer development in Greece is one of many scientific research done to reduce vehicle emissions. The carbon dioxide capture using nanostructured membranes is also another way to check the vehicle emissions. In this method single gas separation experiments were carried out using silica modified membranes to study the behavior of individual gas permeation at different pressures and temperatures. 1. Working of nanostructures membranes in capturing CO2 emission. Design and fabrication of porous membranes comprises of many layers of different materials namely: Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3), Titanium Oxide (TiO2), Zirconium Oxide (ZrO2), Silicon Dioxide (SiO2), Silicon Carbide, Zeolite, or a mixture of two materials applied on an underlying porous stainless steel. The manner in which gas molecules flow is generally influenced by three factors: The gas properties, morphology of the membrane and the material used for membrane design. The technology is environment friendly, quite economical and efficient. It is applicable to all forms of CO2 removal from other gases. Nanotechnology is being greatly used in this method of carbon capture. Since 2003 vehicles have been built with on–board communications network

The Truth About Self Driving Cars The Truth about Self Driving Cars Dustin Wolff 912365150 dmwolff@ucdavis.edu ECS 15, Fall Quarter, Professor Liu December 1st 2014 Dustin Wolff Professor Liu ECS 15 15 November 2014 Truth about Autonomous Cars Vehicles that drive themselves is a concept that is often thought about in futuristic movies or science fiction novels. Throughout, history mankind has been fascinated with robots and cars that could work without humans. Advanced technology is getting closer to making these futuristic ideas the real thing. Living in an advanced technological time would society be ready for this to happen and how far away is this from becoming a reality? One of the biggest challenges facing autonomous cars is legal issues. As of right now computer technology and artificial intelligence face numerous legal battles. Most people have heard of the technology that Google is creating in an attempt to make a "driver–less" car. As the technology gets more attention in the news Google's driverless car has become a very opinionated and sensitive topic. People often ask questions like "What if Google's car hit someone? Who would be at fault for the accident Google or the owner of the car?" These questions are currently being debated at the state and federal levels. As of right now states are actively seeking to regulate autonomous cars much more than the federal government is. Currently only California, Florida, Nevada and the District of Columbia have successfully created ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. What Is A Self-Driving Car Autonomous? The term autonomous refers to the capability of acting independently or having the freedom to do so. A self–driving car is an autonomous car, which has the ability to sense its environment and navigating without any human operations. These types of cars are built to make safe and smart decisions on the road. In the past years, automobile companies have begun to introduce advanced driver assistance systems that are capable of parking, switching lanes and breaking in case of emergency on their own without drivers assistance. Automated vehicles are capable of maneuvering through street traffic, other natural and manmade obstacles along the way. Therefore, this technology might completely change the methods of transportation. Some companies are taking a further step by creating their own version of driverless vehicles. Since 2009, Google has been working on self–driving cars and testing them on city streets. Recently, Google has announced that its self–driving cars had completed over 1 million miles of autonomous driving. Having a fully working self–driving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the study conducted by processors at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and the University of Washington in Seattle, stated that energy consumption with self–driving cars will in fact increase. Although the idea of having self–driving car is a good idea, it will likely attract people who are currently unable to drive to take on the road on their own. While this is likely a good idea for social good, "it promises to increase energy consumption by between 10 and 25 percent." • 7. How Smart Phones Helps Drivers On The Road Have you ever been told by a family member or friend to no use your phone when driving, because you can get into an accident? I know I have. For as long as I can remember, there has been a stigma placed on phone usage while driving, and because of that stigma, some people view them as a distraction, and nothing more. As a result, they miss out on the vast repertoire of features that could actually be of help to them. Since the uprising of distracted driving accidents, all the good that smart phones can do kind of goes unnoticed. But what a lot of people fail to realize, is that smart phones have an abundance of features that can assist drivers on the road. Only when these features are used, and people stop texting, checking social media, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Smart phone navigation systems are one of the many ways that they can assist drivers while on the road. GPS navigation has evolved from simple turn by turn navigation, into something more. Bartlett and Spinelli also mention a feature in which drivers can choose whether they want to detour around certain obstructions like car accidents, lane closings, and obstructions of that nature. Averting these types of obstructions gives the driver a much safer route to their destination, as well as eliminates the threat of a possible collision, which tends to occur most frequently in those areas. They state how this simplifies finding those trouble spots, and how it eliminates flicking through various radio stations while trying to get traffic info, especially since the radio tends to focus on the major accidents, and sometimes misses the other obstructions. Bartlett and Spinelli expand upon this, and go into detail on how it works: With a traffic service, the navigation device will receive periodic updates based on your driving path or (if entered) programmed destination. It can provide on–screen alerts and even indicate the traffic flow rate. Usually the driver can tap a traffic icon to receive info on how long the delay is, what type of obstruction (accident, construction, lane closing), and then decide whether or not to detour around a trouble–spot. Also, general traffic in the area can often be displayed by going into the menu of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Intel Reflection EXCERPT: Over the past few weeks, I have been with Intel Corporation understanding their Internet of Things (IoT) product roadmaps from security, healthcare, retail, energy, smart cities, and of most interest is leveraging IoT to extend the customer experience. Source: 2017, Christopher R. Wilder (Mid–life crisis) Over the past few weeks, I have been with Intel Corporation understanding their Internet of Things (IoT) product roadmaps from security, healthcare, retail, energy, smart cities, and of most interest is leveraging IoT to extend the customer experience. This week I will be in the Bay Area with Intel's Autonomous Vehicle (AV) team getting a deeper dive into their vision for the future of mobility. Across the board, one of the things that have impressed me most with Intel's overall IoT strategy is their focus on experience, rather than just on technology – although the tech is impressive too. Moving AV beyond just a science experiment Intel and it's Mobileye division believes autonomous driving is not a just a product; it is an industry. As the industry advances, Intel is working diligently to be the tip of the spear when it comes to safety, technology, standards, and sustainability. Recently, Intel's Mobileye released a framework to help automakers, technology companies, and regulators to understand the fundamental pillars of safety assurance and economic scalability in this highly fragmented and heterogeneous marketplace. • 9. The Problem Of Car Accidents The common saying of "The chain is only as strong as the weakest link" serves a great resemblance in many topics of the world today. Car accidents are similar, it takes one person to set off a chain reaction of cars tumbling into each other and causing a catastrophe. Self Driving cars can take away that chain reaction and save many lives. For example, in the United States alone there are 42,000 traffic–related deaths each year (Speksnijder 1). This number is more than it seems to be. With many major companies all in the works to make autonomous cars a reality it can reduce these numbers to practically zero, "Accidents are expected to decrease between 30%–80% once self–driving cars are broadly available" (Surden 6). The company was such a good idea that both the founders and the company were bought out by Uber (Cava n.pag). Families with children would be worried as to the safety of these vehicles. Meanwhile, Google is taking all this information into consideration of what these parents are worried about. Their driverless cars are the most sophisticated car in the entire world. This is how it works. Every car today has something called a subsystem, subsystems are elements in the car that the driver can not control. For instance, airbag, emergency braking, cruise control, automatic parking and lane keeping (Surden 4). These are also called Advanced Driver Assistance Systems or ADAS(Surden 4), and can be found in almost every brand new car on the roads today. Google car has an additional two subsystems, one for steering and one for braking(Surden 4). This leaves the car that ability to steer and brake without the assistance of a human entity holding the steering wheel. When it comes to how the car takes the information and turns it into actions, for instance when there is a pedestrian and the car needs to stop. • 10. Insurance, Liability, And Liability Essay Insurance and Liability As previously noted, we anticipate that the instances of car accidents will decrease with the use of HAVs. Nonetheless, car accidents are always a possibility and car accidents with HAVs pose the unique question, "Is the driver liable or is the manufacturer liable?" HAVs will ultimately develop into more autonomously functioning vehicles, operating without much human assistance. If such an autonomously functioning car were part of a car accident, the manufacturer 's liability would certainly increase. However, the first commercially available HAVs will involve the vehicle sharing the driving responsibility with the human driver. Establishing liability in this gray area is a challenge that Maryland will take on. Also, car insurance premiums will likely increase for the consumer, which is an important consideration because that translates to less disposable income in the pocket of the driver. Technology One of the primary concerns is ensuring a two–tier system guaranteeing that if one system fails (i.e. the car's autonomous system), there is a warning system to inform the driver to take control of the vehicle. The safety of the driver has to remain the number one concern. The intricate technology used on HAVs is what makes their smart driving capabilities work safely. Frequent software updates will be necessary so that the HAV can acknowledge new roads and infrastructure.(cite: Anderson) If the HAV owner waits several months after being notified of ... • 11. Disadvantages Of Driverless Cars "I'm on my way!" you tell your friend over the phone as you step into your car. "I'll be there in half an hour!" You sit down and buckle up, absentmindedly opening the alarm app on your phone. You set it to wake you up in thirty minutes, then relax into your seat, turn on the radio, and close your eyes. How is this possible? Technology has advanced incredibly quickly over the last hundred years, with developments such as the Internet and the smart phone. Along with this technology has come a lot of developments in the robotics industry. Robotic surgeons, controlled by professionals, have hands much steadier and more precise than a human could ever hope to mimick, increasing safety and decreasing recovery time for surgery patients. The ultrasonic sensors tell the car whether or not there are bumps on the road, or if it's approaching a curb, something a human is not always capable of doing, and the lidar on top identifies lane markers and the edges of the road by bouncing light off of them. Sensors on self–driving cars take out all the guess work usually involved in driving a car out of the equation. While all of these sensors work together to steer the car away from danger, occasionally, says Olivia Solon, data amassed by all the sensors can conflict with each other, resulting in a dangerous situation referred to as "sensor fusion." This fusion of sensors has already resulted in a fatal crash involving a tester of a self–driving Tesla car; the sensors produced conflicting data, and as a result mistook a truck for an overhead road sign, causing the car to run directly into the truck. Therefore, while these numerous sensors are instrumental to the driverless car, they are still in development and not yet safe to trust with human lives. GPS tracking and positioning is also incorporated into every automated car, for the self–evident purpose of informing driver and car where they are and where they're going. Some cars ... Upper management quickly began seeking other alternatives which resulted in them obtaining a license with a very successful Berlin–based company called Knorr–Bremse AG. This partnership was pursued in effort to begin manufacturing brake systems as a response to survive the cessation of aircraft engine production. The contract was over a ten year span and was intended to provide BMW with employment and profit until 1930 ("History of BMW", 2015). This directional shift resulted in great advantage for BMW as manufacturing power was allocated to BMW from Knorr–Bremse AG because they could not handle the demand they were receiving for manufacturing in their own factories. This allowed BMW to be accessible for governmental bodies to pursue contracted agreements. Bavarian trains were then fit and prepared for Knorr brakes in which the Bavarian government contracted with BMW permitting them to be the official Knorr brake producers of Bavaria because BMW was located in the homeland ("History of BMW", 2015). Furthermore, these conditions caused the company to pursue greater avenues which lead to the manufacturing of motorcycle engines. In 1921 BMW created the first motorized bicycle ... The Advance Traveler Information Systems The motive and idea proposed through this paper is to implement Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) that is potential enough to provide solutions for problems encountered in cases of both, informed and non–informed users. After several route–choice studies and investigations, experts conclude that impact of elaborated and virtually supported information determine vast difference in theoretical and methodological approach to ATIS. As an attempt to develop the technologies appropriate to establish an Overall Intelligent Transportation System supported with real–time and accurate data to make traveler destination/route choices a happy decision. Generally both, descriptive or prescriptive concept of pre–trip traveler information has a positive impact. It increases the traveler's confidence to explore deeper, bargain in the new land, use freeways properly and make better informed transit choices. En–route visual data and information offer tested guidance, saves travel time, helps to avoid congestion, improves traffic performance and provide more efficiency than paper maps, written instructions or previous traveler experiences (BoozAllen & Hamilton, 1998). However, recent studies have revealed people's lack of awareness about the system and its diminished usage. The efforts and rework carried to overcome this weak link register a pitfall in the prevailing system which exhibits the limitation of visual data in it. • 31. A New Angle On Car Safety According to Chris Urmson, "1.2 million people are killed on the world 's roads every year. In America alone, 33,000 people are killed each year" (Urmson). Urmson is the Director of Self– Driving Cars at Google, and in March of 2015 he presented a TED Talk in which he addressed issues of car safety. In his presentation, Urmson goes on to explain that for over a century, America has come up with ways to mitigate car safety issues. Manufacturers have specifically addressed the fact that car drivers often err, and in so doing, create unsafe conditions for themselves and others on the roads. To address this, vehicles have been revamped to be more structurally sound, and collision safety features have been added, such as air bags and seatbelts. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Urmson). Driverless cars also have other sensors, including four radars, a GPS, an inertial measurement unit, and a wheel encoder. The radars detect obstacles. The GPS, inertial measurement unit, and the wheel encoder determine where autonomous vehicles are currently and track where they go (Guizzo). Incorporating Vehicle–to–vehicle (V2V) communication in self–driving cars would provide additional safety. V2V is the technology that allows cars to exchange information such as speed, direction, location and other data with one another. This technology is also useful for vehicles with drivers because it allows them to receive a warning of unexpected events and enables them to react quickly, thus improving safety. For instance, if a driver ahead quickly presses the brakes, nearby cars will get a warning that allows them to react promptly. If a car is speeding in a curve, the driver in the car will get a warning that indicates that they're going too fast and need to slow down. Vehicle–to–vehicle communication also allows roads to "talk" to cars about traffic jams, road work, and road conditions. If there's black ice ahead, the driver will get a warning indicating the hazard. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there could be "600,000 fewer crashes involving ... Only select Mercedes–Benz, BMW and Ford models have this feature. On most passive systems (where the car just warns the driver), a series of audible beeps will be emitted. However, on active systems, LKA will actively direct the car back into the lane. How this works depends on the car. On most cars that have electric steering, LKA is tied in with the steering motor and will gently steer you back into the lane. The more common method is that LKA will tie in with the electronic stability control (ESC) system and apply slight braking pressure onto the appropriate wheels to yaw the vehicle back into the ...
