 To say that something is happening
right now, we use:
 Estar is conjugated just like normal.
Estar + Present Participle

3. Estar & Present Participles
 The present participle is formed by:
-ar
Infinitive -
-ir
Cantar =
Beber =
Vivir =
-er
cantando
bebiendo
viviendo
+ -iendo
-iendo
-ando

4. Estar & Present Participles
 Examples:
Cora is listening to CD’s.
Cora está escuchando los discos.
Pedro and Luis are eating.
Pedro y Luis están comiendo.
I am writing a letter.
Estoy escribiendo una carta.

5. Estar & Present Participles
 The present participle of verbs
ending in -eer has the ending
-yendo.
Example: leer = leyendo
¿Qué estás leyendo ahora?
 This is used much less frequently in
Spanish than in English. We use it to
show that an action is happening
NOW.

6. Estar & Present Participles
 Ex:
Carlos repara coches.
 Carlos repairs cars. (generally speaking)
Carlos está reparando un Mercedes.
 Carlos is repairing a Mercedes (right now)
