Pasado Simple
2. The simple past sometimes called the preterite, is the basic
form of the past tense in Modern English. It is used
principally to describe events in the past, although it also
has some other uses.
3. • Normal rules for adding suffixes beginning with a vowel apply: If the base form
ends in e then only d is added.
Ex:
like → liked
•With regular verbs, the past tense is formed (in terms of spelling) by adding -ed to
the base form.
Ex:
play → played
•If the base form ends in a consonant followed by y then the y is changed to i before
adding the ending.
Ex:
try → tried
4. •For most base forms ending in c, the doubled form used is ck.
Ex:
panic → panicked
•Verbs such as drink and have are irregular since some of their parts are not made
according to the typical pattern.
Ex:
drink→drank
have→had
•If the base form ends in a single vowel followed by a single consonant (except h, silent
t, w, x and y) the consonant is doubled before adding the –ed.
Ex:
ship → shipped
