• Two important festivals: Beltane (the beginningof summer)
and Samhain ( the start of winter).
• Samhain was celebrated fromthe 31st of October to the 1st of
November.
• Celtics were afraid of winter because days were short and cold
and nights were very long. They associated winter with death
and evil spirits.
Origin
• Celts believed that on the night of the 31st
October the spirits came out of their
tombs, so they made big fires and wore
scary customes to frighten them.
• They played games to bring good luck in
the year. They also ate nuts and apples
because they were considered lucky foods.
Druids
The Druids were
Celtic priests who
practiced magic and
religious rituals.
They were cosidered
as very important. At
Samhain they talked
about the future.
Symbolism
• Black: The colour of winter and long nights.
• Orange: The colour of the harvest.
• Black cat: Celtics thought it has special
powers.

combinedSamhainwith their festival, Pomona.She was
the Roman goddes of gardens and fruit trees.
• Years later Christianity substitutedthis Pagan practice.
