My Experience Of My Life
Waiting at the bach I wait for the family to turn up. The sun is shining on the lake and reflecting back, with the gorgeous different greens in the
background. I think to myself on how great and peaceful this holiday is going to be. As the siblings turn up it becomes more exciting and eventful.
All the plans of what we are going to do, get thrown around, everyone is smiling with enjoyment and laughter. Butterflies in my stomach are going
crazy, flying everywhere, I stop and wonder where dad could be but then I think 'oh, he's probably just stopped for some food on the way down'.
Ring, ring, ring, "hello".
"Is this Lucy?"
"Yes, this is, how can I help?"
"Your father Adam Millar has been in a car accident and is in a critical state at Greenlane Hospital."
"I'm on my way!"
I turn around and all I hear is "are you ok?" "what happened?" My stomach just turns, my gut is in knots. I explain what has happened and hopped
into my car and left. Summer holiday of my dream just turned dark and horrid. 2 hours later, I get to the hospital, dad is just lying there helpless...
I'm getting flooded with pain, anger, guilt, hurt. It's like there is a dark cloud hanging over him like he is nothing. The doctors come over and start
explaining that his lungs are too weak to work on their own, they have hooked him up to a ventilator until he is stronger, he has been put in a coma
to help him. My heart sunk, I am being buried alive? Feels like I was buried alive. I scream with terror. My phone

American Beauty, directed by Sam Mendes and The Virgin...
Reality. Merriam Webster's Online Dictionary defines reality as "something that is neither derivative nor dependent but exists necessarily." But what is
real by today's standards? Does what appears to be normal equal reality? By looking at two different films it seems that the old cliche stands correct.
Things aren't as they appear. American Beauty and TheVirgin Suicides give classic examples of how "normal" and "happy" suburban life is anything
but. American Beauty, directed by Sam Mendes (1999) and The Virgin Suicides, directed by SofiaCoppola (2000), share many of the same themes even
though the plots are contrasted. Underneath the layers of white picket fences, beautiful houses, and safe neighborhoods, lies a truth. A truth so dark...

For they too were in their own cells. They both were confined to the hurt and desperation of having one of their children take her own life. Was it
because of failure on their parts? The answer to this they will never know. And so they will continue to live in the prison of ignorance.
Other elements that are seen throughout both of these films are infatuation and obsession. Anyone who has seen the movie American Beauty can
not miss Lester's obsession with Angela, his daughter's classmate and friend. He first sees her when he and Carolyn go to see their daughter
perform at the school basketball game. Instantly he became mesmerized by her beauty and couldn't stop the feelings he had for her. Obviously they
were strictly sexual feelings. Is this normal? Is it normal for a father to have any kind of feelings for their daughter's friend? It may be normal but it
is not what is correct. And so in order to portray the perfect family Lester tried for a while to suppress the feelings he was having for Angela.
Carolyn is also a victim of obsession. She is overly obsessed with appearances. She often makes comments to Jane about the way she looks. She
feels that she cannot be happy unless she is presented in an ideal way. "Because of the necessity to keep up appearances, a serene facade often
conceals a breeding ground for dysfunction, anxiety, and hypocrisy" (Berardinelli). An example of this is when she is trying to sell a

The Lives Of Animals ( 1999 )
In The Lives of Animals (1999), a metafictional novella about animal right by the South African novelist J.M. Coetzee, the author posits through
his character representative, Elizabeth Costello, that "animals are not believers in ecology" (Coetzee 151). We are told to believe based on the
previous ruminations of Costello, who outlines early in part I "The Philosophers and the Animals" section that animals do not possess reason, and
as a result, animals cannot hope to comprehend the way in which the complex ecosystems that are present in the study of ecology in any
meaningful way (Coetzee 137). This claim is important to Costello in that it is the very foundation of everything else she argues within her debate,
as she cites that to approach the ethics of the animal rights argument from any spectrum of our understanding of reason is to do so from a flawed
point of view, as animals do not possess reason and therefore cannot be judged and evaluated under that system fairly, or even at all. While Costello's
claims certainly present an interesting point, they are troubling and ultimately flawed in their approach. I strongly disagree with Costello's claim that
animal are not believers in ecology because she is wholly enamoured with the idea of reason being an impossible judge of animal rights, going so far
as to say that if reason is all she shares with her philosophical opponents, then she has no use for it (Coetzee 133). However, through Costello's
assumption that she can speak

Persuasive Speech On You Are Alone
You are alone in a room. You have 2 minutes till your death. You have a phone. Do you make a call? Who do you call?
Growing up I was led to believe that when you die it will be of old age, in a hospital bed with loved ones surrounding you. You are able to say
goodbye to those you care for and tell them what you have been waiting and wanting to say. Even if they aren't there it is important to let them know
everything and tell them what they mean to you. And no, this isn't just so you feel better about yourself it is one of you last acts on this earth, your last
chance to say what needs to be said to those that matter to you. It isn't something that is normally talked about but it needs to be, it is something that
will happen to just about everyone and you need to be prepared.
Guaranteed, this is the hardest thing you will EVER have to do. You can't avoid it, it is something you will have to do. Many people believe that
you should not make this contact to your family, you should just leave them alone. I think different. This is the last time they will ever hear your
voice or read your message. This small act reflects who you are and is a part of you that will stay with those people forever. For those people that
were tragically lost in the twin towers attacks, this a decision they were faced with. Many of their families had to answer or listen to these calls that
their loved ones left that they are now so thank full of as "all I needed was that message, and I think that he

"Speaking of drunk, I have wine in my room. Shall we indulge? I've never seen you have more than a few sips, Maxen."
He propped himself up on his elbows and kissed her. "I will drink. Let me dress and fetch the bottle."
He hopped out of bed, and Audra admired his magnificent, muscular backside with a satisfied smile on her face and he slipped into his trousers, but
the spotted a smear of blood on his lower arm.
"Maxen, you're still bleeding."
"Nothing to worry about." He dragged his tunic over his head and glanced over his shoulder at her. "But oh..."
"What?"
"I've gotten my blood all over that pretty face of yours."
Maxen sat on the bed beside Audra, licked his thumb, and scrubbed the dried blood from her face. Then he leaned down and kissed her.
"I don't want to stop kissing you or touching you," he said.
"I think we can break for refreshment."
He let out a playful growl. "I don't want to, but I will."
After giving Audra another long kiss, he rose and padded from the room, and Audra stretched out in the bed. She was relaxed and inlove, and she
pushed away any feelings of guilt. Those could be managed later. During this week, Maxen would be the husband of her heart, and if the gods saw fit
to strike her down for her transgressions, it would all be worth it.
Maxen's quiet footsteps padded back to the room; however, an unfamiliar voice spoke just outside the chamber door.
"Sir Knight, would you and the queen care to share in the festivities downstairs? You are most welcome."

A Short Note On My Life
y I'm here. The ancestors are not happy with your decision not to accept your calling. Even though I don't want to be a sangoma? They made it clear
that I'm not to offer you any alternative solution. Accept their call, or else... – Or else what? – Don't anger the ancestors, understood? They could make
your life even more difficult. How? My life is already a mess. You could go crazy, have unexplainable illnesses... or... you could die. Okay. What

The 1999 Scripps National Spellbound
Imagine, standing on stage, pans covered with a coat of sweat, bright lights turn the crowd into nothing but silhouettes. Twenty other students all there
for the same reason. This was the experience of eight kids in the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee, and was captured by the 2002 film Spellbound .
Although a majority of the movie is spent focusing on the students ways of preparing for the bee, the movie still captures what the students went
through during the spelling bee, and their reactions if and when they were eliminated . All the students took advantage of their resources, and overcame
obstacles, to put their all into preparing for the spelling bee, not matter their methods. The student ranged in race, age, backrounds, financial status, ...

For example, Ashley did not have as much money as the other students did ,but she found ways that did not cost much to study, and while many kids
took traditional way to study, a few students made up new, creative ways that help them study, like Angela who would glue letter on to poster board
and spell out letters. While many people may attempt to find an excuse to prevent them from getting involved or studying, these students persevered,
and some may have used these excuses for a reason to try harder.
The overall theme is an important one, especially to the age group it was presented to for this event, 9th graders. In high school, grades matter more.
Later on colleges will look at that, and a C you got in a class freshmen year could really affect you later on down the road. If you really do put your all
into your grades, the hard work will pay off when it comes time to apply for colleges.
The word is finally announced, a silence fills the room, as the crowd holds their breaths, all eyes on the same place, the word in spelt, the dinging of
bell sounds, notifying that the time in the National Spelling Bee is over. Seven spellers went through this, all accept Nupur, the 1999 National Spelling

be comical . I surprisingly enjoyed myself, and would highly recommend it to future

Short Story : ' Lost '
Lost Lost is what I am. Lonely is my friend. Faith is my enemy. No one is my family. Ugly, fat, loser, and idiot are my names. They'll give me
another one tomorrow. Day after day, I'm always given a different name. They never call me by my real name, Basil. I'm an 8th grader that goes to
Halfhill Middle School. I've been called fat, ugly, and worthless. I've been cutting for 4 months now. I don't know what to do with my life. I'm just
lost. Life hasn't been the greatest lately. Every night screaming, and banging noises fill up my house. Constantly I pray I'm not next. My dad is
abusive, but no one knows. First he goes for mom. Next, is my older brother, Jake. Then, it's me. I have bruises and scars that I have to hide in
public. People ask me why I never let them come over... I'm afraid they'll get hurt, or judge me even more. I can't risk that. Beep, beep, beep. My
alarm's ringing. I slowly slump across the room to shut it off. Time for another day of despair, and misery. I quickly throw my clothes on and
sprint out the door, so my dad doesn't see me. I walk to the bus stop, where ignorant kids await to mock me like every other day. I slowly approach
the crowd, staying behind them. I don't want to draw any attention. The bus creaks as it arrives at the bus stop. Creeaak. We all pile into the bus.
Being my clumsy self I trip over the bus step. Everyone lets out a giggle. I search for an empty seat only to see that there are none. There's only two

How Wars Always Have Disastrous Effects On Civilians
Wars always have disastrous effects on civilians, in particular on children who are growing up in a world of violence and are surrounded by
atrocities and deaths. It can be even more traumatic when children find themselves taking an active part in conflicts. Indeed in numerous conflicts,
combatants aged under eighteen, and therefore considered as 'child soldiers', are involved. Although international law expressly prohibit the
recruitment and use of youths aged under fifteen, about 300,000 child soldiers are currently taking part in hostilities, and many do not have the legal
age to do so. Some are enrolled by force, but many volunteer for various reasons. Some claim that children should not have anything to do with
political issues and wars and thus should not be prosecuted, while others claim that all children are not purely victims and may be partly responsible
for their acts. This essay argues that because they are children, child soldiers cannot be prosecuted along with adults, and should rather benefit of
support programmes in order to enable their reintegration into the civilian society. However this reintegration may takes years and cannot be
successful until it is sure that children are no longer a threat for the society or for themselves, and it may require that children spend time in detention
centers for minors until they are no longer a danger. The first part will focus on the different situations that can lead children to become soldiers. I will

Public Speaking Short Story
Public Speaking by Gustav W
It was a cold and foggy morning, less than 3 degrees, but in the town of Sylvester this was considered warm, Sylvester was a town unlike others
because it was home to the greatest adventurers of all time: Billy the Bold, Jumbo the Gibberish, Collin the cold butt and miss and Mr Appleby. And
this is where our story begins. Jeff was out picking apples with his dog Dingelberry.
After Jeff returned he decided he would become Sylvester's next great explorer he packed his things and set sail in his boat. After 20 minutes Jeff
found out that he was a really bad sailor and had to turn back to land back at home Jeff thought of a solution where he would not have to sail or swim.
Jeff stayed up all night to think of something and then in the morning Jeff had designed and made the perfect flying machine.
Outside Jeff tried his hardest to heave the plane outside and just then his best friend walked by and with the added help of his friend they finally got
onto the hill with a ramp at the bottom so the plane could take off. Jeff rolled down the hill and took off he soared through the sky but after a while Jeff
realised that the fuel canister was extremely low so he had to turn back.
Back at home Jeff had to think of a way to switch the fuel while In the air and he kept coming to the same conclusion someone or something would
have to manually climb on to the wing and pour the fuel into the tank while the plane is still flying in mid–air over the treacherous

Falling In Love : The Story Of Falling In Love
Have you ever fallen head over heels for someone you thought was absolutely everything to you? Do you remember the butterflies in your stomach at
just the touch of their hand, because I do. Falling in love is the closest thing to magic that some of us have experienced. Yet again, heartbreak is the
closest feeling to death that I've felt. I remember the moment I first met my first actual boyfriend, it was at a race. Dee was very handsome in my
eyes. He'd always find a way to motivate me on beating my personal record and never settling for less. Believe it or not, I felt as if he was my only
source of happiness, everything was always great when he was around. I'd dream of marrying him, going off to college with him, and growing up
together. After all, I had dated him for three years, but I should've known they were nothing but just false hopes and dreams. Dee was an amazing
person, just not every in relationships. He was young when I met him, he had a lot of growing up to do. In other words, Dee wanted to be "that guy".
The popular guy with tons of friends and the one who all girls wanted. Sadly, he was that guy, but that didn't bother me. I thought I was the only one
who had his love so that was all that mattered. If I was having a bad day, he always knew how to brighten it for me. If he ever had a bad day, I knew
bringing up the universe was a great idea because he was so fascinated by it. I'd craft his gifts every Friday just as a little motivational trinket for

Racial Discrimination Act 1999
The Act established a National Native Title Tribunal to carry out many of the functions identified in the objectives of the Act, including the registration
of applications for determinations, the mediation of agreements and the facilitation of negotiations over future dealings in land. In the case of most
future dealings (called future acts), native title holders were to be given the same rights as freehold title holders. In relation to other acts, such as mining
proposals, the Act guaranteed a right to negotiate over the proposal. (Strelein, 2015)

Persuasive Essay : Bad Decisions And Consequences
Everybody makes stupid mistakes that could have been prevented, but nobody in this world is close to perfect and will never be perfect. Good can
actually come from making mistakes, by doing something wrong you are corrected and shown how to fix it by someone who has already made
your mistake. Growing up I have made plenty of terrible decisions that lead to consequences in the end. Also, I have seen many of my close friends
and family make mistakes that got them into trouble, but afterwards they learned a valuable lesson. I am going to tell you a story about one of my
close friends who made a mistake and took full responsibility of his action and by doing so learned a valuable lesson that he can now pass on to people
in his life.
During the summer I fly down to Arkansas to visit my dad and work at a place called Camp Yorktown bay, which is a christian camp with different
ages each week. We provide several different activities there and one of them is boats. At boats you can do any sport possible behind a boat that
the kids want to learn and we the staff will teach them how. Our oldest age group, which is the last week we do an overnight trip on the boats. My
Friend Chandler was on his way to fill up the boat after the long day of work. It was getting dark out and pretty soon he had to drive with knowledge of
where the shallow spots were on the lake because you could no longer see the markers pointing out the shallow water. The mistake that he made was
mixing up where he thought he was so he had no idea he was coming upon a very shallow part, next thing we he knows the boat makes a terrifying
noise and it stops moving. I remember him telling me that he got really scared, and he had realized that the boat had ran aground. It wasn't that big
of a shallow spot so by backing up he got free. The boat had seemed fine so he kept driving, when he got back to camp he realized that he had to tell
our boss what had happened.
The next morning right away Chandler went to our boss Jeff and started explaining what had happened that night. He took full responsibility and told
my boss that he would try and pay for the damages somehow. But by being honest with him and not lying Jeff said that he did not have to pay any
money for

Sharpen The Saw Analysis
"Sharpen the saw". I know for me I forget a lot of the time that in order to be successful I should take care of myself first. Remembering to take care of
myself has never been a leadership habit I have been good at. My previous supervisor who was also a good friend of mine was good at trying to
remind me to do things for me.
It is apparent that not only should it be to take care of myself physically and emotionally, but also to keep up with the times. A lot of thetime she would
make sure to send me on housing conferences, and leadership conferences because there is always something new to learn in an ever–changing world.
The idea is to keep up with those changes, especially since every year was a different generation of residents coming ... Show more content on

I am still working with the college volleyball program, and I have started working with the local club volleyball as I always do every season.
Things now are a little chaotic, and less organized, but I am starting to have to make myself understand what is most important and what is not. It
has become a lot easier lately because I know working with the college volleyball program it is more for experience, and not so much a job especially
since it is a volunteer basis, and not a paid position. This takes a lot of stress off each day because it is not a true responsibility unless I want it to be.
The third and final weakness is "Begin with the end in mind". "The ability to envision in your mind what you cannot at present see with your eyes.
It is based on the principle that all things are created twice". (Covey 1989) I am person who tends to do things in the moment. I forget a lot of the
time what the end product is supposed to be. I know what I must do to get to the end product, but during the process I have a habit of looking at what
needs to be done in order to move on to whatever is next. This habit can sometimes be detrimental to the success of the project I am working

Bernard's Statement 'Nothing Is What You Think It Is'
In Bernard's novel the Achievement habit he uses experiences to prove statements. One of those statements "Nothing is what you think it is" is being
described by many situations to describe that nothing really is what we probably think it is.These statements are all provided in this book to eventually
persuade readers on how to change their lives. The situations being used come from those studying at Stanford University and whom are participating
in the design thinking. Due to the use of design thinking, society, and personal experiences Roth's statement "Nothing is what you think it is" succeeds
and also fails.

By using design thinking, society, and personal experiences Roth's statement "Nothing is what you think it is" fails. Roth says, "To forge a new
attitude toward the events and relationship in your life you must learn to look at them with a fresh perspective." When making Roth's statement false,
people shouldn't have to look at things at different perspective everything is just what people think it is. In another piece of writing, "Dispersed
Collectivities: Rumors & Gossip" an another describes different types of gossip and rumors. Rumors go against Roth's statement because people seem
to believe rumors. When people believe rumors everything is obviously what it seems. "Individuals who take a critical set or stance are able to
separate truth from falsehood." So when people do not look at things from a different perspective they just believe what they hear. Rumors are one of
the things that people just believe. This counteracts Roth's statement because there are people that believe that everything is what you think it is not

Personal Narrative Personal Experience
My heart began to beat a little faster as the sound of the plane engine rumbled throughout the cabin. The day I'd fantasized about for weeks had
finally arrived. I was aboard a plane headed to Orlando for one of the biggest cheer completions in the U.S. As we taxied down the runway and my
stomach tightened. Was it excitement, anxiety, or nerves? I wasn't sure, but I embraced it all with a smile.
The Florida heat followed me all the way to my hotel room. The flight was exhausting and long but there was no time to rest. My family and I were
getting settled in our room when I received the text. "Meet in the lobby in 10... practice wear and bow." All the hard work my team and I had put in

At last, we all nervously walked to our spot on stage. By this time I knew Ihad to give it all I had. Not seconds later the music started and we were

Analysis of the Film American Beauty
'American Beauty' is a 1999 drama film that focuses on contemporary lives of individuals having diverse personalities and identities. The movie and
the main character Lester Burnham are aiming to make us realise that life can be short therefore we should lead more meaningful lives. Through this,
he takes us one year back which summarises his life and those around him. Outward appearances can be very deceiving as anyone can acquire
superficial impressions. In this discussion, I will be examining closely on a number of identities that is found in 'American Beauty'.
In the film, the characters are in the search for what they believed was their happiness. Too focused on finding what they deemed was happiness, they
failed to consistently maintain coherent identities. Lester Burnham, a husband and a father, who is the protagonist of the film, feels ambushed at home
and at work. He has little to no control of his life as his wife Carolyn strives to be the perfect American family. Lester unleashes from being controlled
when he meets his daughter's best friend, Angela and sees her as a femme fatale and their neighbour's son, Ricky. Ricky introduces himself to Lester
on one of Carolyn's business social function and gets along immediately while sharing a joint. Lester witnesses Ricky quit his job casually and was
amazed: "I think you just became my personal hero." Meeting Ricky inspired Lester to re–live his teenage years and he was happy of the outcome in
the beginning. Through

Moving to Galatia was a big event in my life. If I wouldn't have moved, I wouldn't have my super reliable best friend. While we do almost

friend that I worked with. Turns out Devyn was his best friend. We would talk about Luke and they would talk about me. Devyn told me transferring

house and when I arrived he told me we were waiting for it to get darker. When the time finally arrived, he told me just to follow him. As I entered
my car I followed him to the water tower, I was a little worried and asked him what we were doing. As Luke climbed out of his truck he grabbed a
nasty, grimy, dirty piece of carpet. When I realized what he grabbed I asked him why he needed that, he laughed and told me I'd find out in a minute.
As we walked a little ways down the road, it was getting dark and chilly

1999 Baseball Umpires Resignation
The Major League Umpires Association (MLUA) was the union that represented Major League Umpires from 1970 to 1999. The MLUA ended up
being decertified and replaced by the World Umpires Association (WUA) when Richie Phillips, the head of the MLUA since 1978 and known for his
combative, antagonistic style, announced in July 1999 that 57 of the league's 66 MLUA members would submit resignations effective September 2nd.
Richie Phillips assumption that the threat of the resignation of the umpires would force the Major League Baseball (MLB) back to the negotiating table
to sign a new contract was erroneous and the scheme led to disastrous results for 22 of the umpires who handed in their resignations and had them
accepted. In the end 11 umpires never got their jobs back and went on to retirement or other jobs.
The MLUA umpires had struck several times in previous years (1979, 1984 and 1991) and had been locked out for the first days of the start of the 1995
baseball season under Richie Phillips tutorage. Each of these previous work stoppages had worked out in the umpires favor; they enjoyed huge
increases in their pay scale, more job security, and better vacations. The MLB and MLUA always had caustic labor relations and tensions were
soaring in the summer of 1999 as the MLUA's five year labor agreement was entering its final year. The MLUA had great concerns with some major
changes proposed by the MLB to the strike zone, umpire evaluations and staff consolidation but were

Annie Get Your Gun Research Paper
"There's no business like show business, like no business I know." This a key lyric from the popular musical Annie Get Your Gun. The musical
brings the story of Annie Oakley and her time in Buffalo Bill's Wild West shows to the stage. Oakley, the Wild West show, and the stage musical
were all important aspects of 19th Century theater and continue to be important to this day. In order to truly understand the importance of Annie
Oakley and how Annie Get Your Gun was written, first a background of the Wild West shows that brought her fame is needed. William F. "Buffalo
Bill" Cody was born on February 26th, 1846 in Iowa. He earned his nickname "Buffalo Bill" after he killed more than 4,000 buffalo in a span of eight
months. Cody first got introduced to theater when he performed in Ned Buntline's play called The Scouts of the Prairie. Cody... Show more content on

Although Cody had a good relationship with Sioux warrior and chief Sitting Bull who was also part of the show, portraying Native Americans as
aggressive warriors wasn't exactly the best idea in the dangerous time period they lived in. The Wild West show was very popular across the United
States. According to Paul Fees, the former curator of the Buffalo Bill Museum "In 1899, Buffalo Bill's Wild West covered over 11,000 miles in 200
days giving 341 performances in 132 cities and towns across the United States. In most places, there would be a parade and two two–hour
performances." (Center of the West). Cody could also be considered a pioneer of equal rights so to speak. It is said that while there weren't as
many women in the show as men, they were all payed equally. The shows ran for 30 years and according to Paul Fees, "Although occasional revivals
and adaptations are staged in the United States and abroad, the era of the Wild West can conveniently be said to have died in 1917 along

The Magic Treehouse : A Short Story
I have read many books since I began reading, and although it probably isn't surprising I must confess: I don't remember but a handful of them. I
remember the escape that a treasured book could grant. Literacy itself allowing me a safe space, a quiet space, my own where I could be whatever
I wanted, whenever I wanted. Almost as though a precursor to my love for the stage, before I realized that dream. I went to my grandma's house
after school every day, she made me a snack and I would sit at the table to wait. While I waited, my companion would be a book, more specifically
the next book in the Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osborne. I loved these stories because I could almost feel myself in the characters. I
must say almost because neither of the characters was similar enough for me to say we connected, at least not all the time. But there were moments
where it was easier to pretend we were similar especially then when connecting with a character really brought the story to life. They were escaping
their normal lives, just as I would do mine, together we traveled back in time, to see dinosaurs and knights, and the round table. The story entrapped
me before I even understood that tales could capture you. While I knew fantasy from reality, and the Magic Treehouse was the perfect way to mix
entertainment, learning, and a touch of history in. Now, I'd be lying if I told you I remember even some of the plot in them, I believe Morgana gave
them quests... they journeyed to

The year 1932 and the years 1948–1999 were also deleted. The year 1932 only had 15 records, so the number of records was too low. 1948–1997 were

Media Effects
The Effects of Media on the Public's Opinion Mass media – have you ever taken the time to consider two articles about the same thing? Some may be
more bias against a group or idea, while others keep a strict, non bias view. The way the media portrays events may change or even corrupt people's
thoughts on certain public matters. This paper will dissect four articles on the Woodstock riots and show the relationships and differences between
them. On a Sunday night, near the closing song of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, there were a few bonfires were reported. The firefighters, feeling they

placing one hard–core band after another could be a mistake and may be the cause of the riots, or other happening, to be placed on the organizers of
the event, the bands or the audience. This shows how the companies' or authors' views can be bias against certain groups or ideas by placing the

My Most Memorable Experience In My Life
My heart was pounding out of my chest as I walked through the frigid, pitch–black forest alone. I could hear was the sound of the night wind blowing
against the trees, crickets chirping in the tall grass all around me, the stream flowing peacefully on my right, and my unsteady breath, which seemed
like the loudest. I walked, step by step, along a path I could barely make out. Am I going off the trail? I questioned myself, and keptwalking through the
silent forest. I was on my first, and only solo–night hike in Yellowstone, Wyoming. This was a night that I will remember forever.
Over the summer, I took a trip to Yellowstone, Wyoming with thirty
–eight other eighth graders and high schoolers. The trip lasted almost two weeks
and was one of the most memorable experiences in my life, but there was one night that impacts me every single day since. On the third night that we
were staying at our campsite, my friends and I were getting ready for bed and hanging out around the bonfire when the camp counselors made an
announcement.
"Everyone meet at the bonfire at 10:30 and bring nothing with you. No backpacks, phones, flashlights, absolutely nothing. Dress warm because it's
going to be cold tonight!" announced Miss Flower, one of the counselors.
My friends and I looked at each other, confused. What were we going to do? Where are we going? What is going on? There were so many
questions overfilling our minds, that none of the counselors would answer. Time seemed to pass so slowly as we waited for an hour until we were
supposed to meet. No one had any idea what was going on, or what the night was going to hold. When it was finally time, we hurried over to the
bonfire to figure out what was happening. We were shocked when Miss Flower just told us to just follow her and the other counselors down the dirt
road by our tents. She didn't answer any questions, where we going, what we were doing, absolutely nothing.
We followed the counselors down the path, which led us to a one–lane highway. Everyone crossed quickly, even though there were no cars to be seen.
There were no lights anywhere, except the soft illumination from the stars above us. After crossing the highway, we walked in tallgrass for a few

This letter is to acknowledge the 1999 Halloween rule that did not allow students to dress in costume for Halloween. For the quality of learning, the
protection of beliefs of students and families, and for the safety of staff and students, I believe that the Halloween costume ban during school is still the
correct decision. The most important factor of school is learning and if students were to freely wear Halloween costumes, not only would it break dress
code, it would also disturb the potential of learning that other students could have during the day. Some students like to wear large, bright, distracting
costumes which would direct the attention off of the teacher or the subject that students are learning. To me, these distractions create

Declaring the ban of corporate and union independent expenditures unconstitutional the Supreme Court indeed ruled correctly, enforcing the idea that
factions and liberty are essential to the functioning of a republican government and upholding the people's right to free speech guaranteed to them by
the first amendment. In ruling the ban on independent expenditures of unions and corporations unconstitutional the Supreme Court reiterated the long
standing belief of the framers and the public that factions are inevitable and necessary to the success of a republican government. In a republican
government the power resides in the elected officials chosen by the public whom they represent. It is common knowledge that the public's opinions will

The idea that corporations and unions shouldn't be able to express themselves through independent expenditures directly violates the first amendment.
The first amendment reads, "Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to
assemble and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances," (Document C). Explicitly stating that no laws may be made to violate the
people's freedom of speech the first amendment itself practically declares the denial of independent expenditures by corporations and unions
unconstitutional. Both corporations and unions are formed by the people, they are simply groups of people with similar interests and by denying them
the use of independent expenditures it is denying them of their freedom of speech. The concurring opinion in Citizens United v. FEC however argued
that, "The Framers didn't like corporations, the dissent concludes, and therefore it follows (as night the day) that corporations had no rights of free
speech," (Document K). The idea that corporations should have no rights simply because the Framers felt it should be so on the grounds of an old
grudge is preposterous. As previously stated, corporations, like unions, are composed of the people, and the people have undeniable rights allotted to
them by the Constitution.

What Is The Theme Of The Kiss By Kate Chopin
The Kiss
"The Kiss" is Kate Chopin's short story about a woman scheming to marry a wealthy man. The story was written on September 19, 1894, and first
published in Vogue on January 17, 1895. The contents of the story are as follows.
The outside was still light, but the curtains were covered inside and the light smoke from the fireplace emitted a dim, strange light on the room, leaving
dark shadows. Brantain was sitting in one of these shadows, and he was clenched and uncomfortable. Thanks to the darkness, he could comfortably
direct his love–filled gaze to the girl sitting in the fireplace. The girl was so beautiful, she had a beautiful skin color for healthy brunette girls, and she
seemed very calm as she stroked the silky feather of the cat in her lap. And occasionally, he looked glanced at his friend in the shadows. They were

In the same way, he described the room as 'full of deep shadows', reflecting the relationship of Chopin Brantain and Nathalie, not all as they seem (at
least for Nathalie). Something that is clear to the readers as they continue to read the story. Chopin seems to be discovering passion and money.
Although it is clear that Brantain loved Nathalie at any stage in the story, the reader doubts that this love is mutually shared. There is an attitude saying
that Nathalie married Brantain, not love, but rather a comfortable life with Brantain; A richman who is aware of the reader (as opposed to Harvy). It is
possible that Chopin's women (who wrote the story) might claim that people have established financial security or stability, and instead of marrying
love, many women should marry men who can. Give them financial security. Even if we do not like Nathalie Brantain (as it is with Harvy), it does
not have economic independence to live his life as he

The catholic priest was born on January 3rd in 1840, had an excellent education and during his college years decided to become a priest in 1860 (at

took it immediately. His days at Molokai were spent helping the lepers and treating them as though they were equals. He attended their physical needs,

Such as in the beginning of his journey Father Damien has an in counter with an elderly man in a poorly made tent he eventually got to know his
name (William Williamson) and a brief story of his past before catching leprosy. At the discovery of Williams faith Fr Damien encouraged him to
change to the Christian life before he passes away. It processes with both characters being stubborn and refusing each other's ideas but in the last
minutes of his life, William finally agrees to changing faith and then dies a Christian. Due to the successfulness of converting sinners he taught them
that God can make them happy and can comfort them. Such as the time when Father Damien goes to "the Mad House". A den for desperate
drunkenness and carousing. He has gone there because a mother tells him the gangs have taken her young daughter there. Father Damien confronts
the gangs, but they jeer at him. Two men pick up a rotting, limbless, nearly faceless crone and laugh as she plants a kiss on the priest. The laughter
ceases when Father Damien takes the old woman into his arms and kisses her in blessing and comfort. This scene shows that father Damien cares
about them even when they are mocking him as it says "Be patient with those that are badly off, do not keep them waiting on your generosity. For the
commandment's sake go to the poor man's help, do not turn on him away empty handed in his need" (Ecclesiasticus 29:8–12). Another time that father
Damien represents this passage is the work of mercy that is, to bear wrongs patiently like the time the prime minister claimed that there must be no
nuns, priest or doctors allowed into Molokai. Father Damien annoyed, waited patiently and helped the lepers by himself until the prime minister
approved and thankfully near the end of the movie he got more people to come and help the lepers, thankfully they came at the perfect time

Song Of Solomon Analysis
"The Shit That Weighs You Down"
All people possess the ability to fly, the inability comes from living a life that weighs them down. Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison exemplifies the
difficult journey of discovering identity through her character Milkman Dead. The novel follows him through the series of unfortunate events that
make up his life and uncovers his complex family history that leads him to understand not only his heritage, but his identity and desire to fly. Everyone
craves flight, whether conscious of it or not, but most let their other desires blind them and cannot "let go of the shit that weighs them down" (Morrison
179). Revenge consumes the life of the avenger, ruining it more that they could ever ruin their victim's life, as Song of Solomon clearly depicts through
the contrast between the inability and ability to fly.
Once the need for revenge developes, life becomes a struggle to hurt that person for what they did. The Christmas letter Hagar receives from
Milkman provoked such a reaction through its " word 'gratitude' and the flat out coldness of 'thank you' that sent Hagar spinning into a bright blue
place... everything frozen except for an occasional burst of fire inside her chest that crackled away until she ran out into the streets to find Milkman
Dead" (99). She quickly descended to a need for revenge, represented by the quick pace developed through a paragraph consisting of one long a
sentence. In a matter of moments her need for revenge consume her life and destroys any happiness she possessed. The ability to fly represents
freedom. By weighing herself down with the need for revenge, flying becomes impossible leaving her trapped in one place her whole life. One the
contrary, Milkman throughout the novel slowly allows himself to give up everything in his life weighing him down and learns the way it feels to fly.
The contrast between the inability and ability to fly expresses the extent to which revenge destroys the life of the avenger rather than the victim of the
avenger's wrath.
Macon Dead's desire for revenge follows the same trend. Although his need for revenge fails to completely consume his life, it results in the permanent
destruction of a close relationship. When Macon and his

Humanitarian Intervention: The 1999 Kosovan War
The 1999 Kosovan War is a controversial event, usually used as a shining example of when humanitarian intervention has worked; unfortunately, when
examined, it is unclear whether the international campaign for peace was an actual success or not. NATO justified their involvement by labelling
Kosovo a 'humanitarian war' after diplomatic negotiations ground to a halt in March 1999 (Wood, 2007). A wide range of sources supported the
war in Kosovo, such as David Clark in 2009, with 'Every member of NATO, every EU country, and most of Yugoslavia's neighbours, supported
military action' (Clark, 2009). Leaders from the US and the UK respectively also stated 'upholding our values, protecting our interests, and advancing
the cause of peace' (Clinton, 1999), and 'to avert what would otherwise be a humanitarian disaster in Kosovo' (Blair, 1999). However, it was not only
ambassadors and high–profile politicians that took this stance; scholars and intellectuals were also vocal about their support for the war (Mellon,
2001). This implies that not only did the foreign western powers believe that a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

2001). This angered many Kosovans, as they felt as though the Serbian treatment of them was horrific enough to be classed as a war crime. On the other
hand, since the Serbian killings were decided not severe enough to be a genocide, it may be interpreted that NATO's humanitarian intervention effort
was a success, as a main argument against the war has always been the Serbian genocide that

My Experience Of My Life

  • 1. My Experience Of My Life Waiting at the bach I wait for the family to turn up. The sun is shining on the lake and reflecting back, with the gorgeous different greens in the background. I think to myself on how great and peaceful this holiday is going to be. As the siblings turn up it becomes more exciting and eventful. All the plans of what we are going to do, get thrown around, everyone is smiling with enjoyment and laughter. Butterflies in my stomach are going crazy, flying everywhere, I stop and wonder where dad could be but then I think 'oh, he's probably just stopped for some food on the way down'. Ring, ring, ring, "hello". "Is this Lucy?" "Yes, this is, how can I help?" "Your father Adam Millar has been in a car accident and is in a critical state at Greenlane Hospital." "I'm on my way!" I turn around and all I hear is "are you ok?" "what happened?" My stomach just turns, my gut is in knots. I explain what has happened and hopped into my car and left. Summer holiday of my dream just turned dark and horrid. 2 hours later, I get to the hospital, dad is just lying there helpless... I'm getting flooded with pain, anger, guilt, hurt. It's like there is a dark cloud hanging over him like he is nothing. The doctors come over and start explaining that his lungs are too weak to work on their own, they have hooked him up to a ventilator until he is stronger, he has been put in a coma to help him. My heart sunk, I am being buried alive? Feels like I was buried alive. I scream with terror. My phone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. American Beauty, directed by Sam Mendes and The Virgin... Reality. Merriam Webster's Online Dictionary defines reality as "something that is neither derivative nor dependent but exists necessarily." But what is real by today's standards? Does what appears to be normal equal reality? By looking at two different films it seems that the old cliche stands correct. Things aren't as they appear. American Beauty and TheVirgin Suicides give classic examples of how "normal" and "happy" suburban life is anything but. American Beauty, directed by Sam Mendes (1999) and The Virgin Suicides, directed by SofiaCoppola (2000), share many of the same themes even though the plots are contrasted. Underneath the layers of white picket fences, beautiful houses, and safe neighborhoods, lies a truth. A truth so dark... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For they too were in their own cells. They both were confined to the hurt and desperation of having one of their children take her own life. Was it because of failure on their parts? The answer to this they will never know. And so they will continue to live in the prison of ignorance. Other elements that are seen throughout both of these films are infatuation and obsession. Anyone who has seen the movie American Beauty can not miss Lester's obsession with Angela, his daughter's classmate and friend. He first sees her when he and Carolyn go to see their daughter perform at the school basketball game. Instantly he became mesmerized by her beauty and couldn't stop the feelings he had for her. Obviously they were strictly sexual feelings. Is this normal? Is it normal for a father to have any kind of feelings for their daughter's friend? It may be normal but it is not what is correct. And so in order to portray the perfect family Lester tried for a while to suppress the feelings he was having for Angela. Carolyn is also a victim of obsession. She is overly obsessed with appearances. She often makes comments to Jane about the way she looks. She feels that she cannot be happy unless she is presented in an ideal way. "Because of the necessity to keep up appearances, a serene facade often conceals a breeding ground for dysfunction, anxiety, and hypocrisy" (Berardinelli). An example of this is when she is trying to sell a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Lives Of Animals ( 1999 ) In The Lives of Animals (1999), a metafictional novella about animal right by the South African novelist J.M. Coetzee, the author posits through his character representative, Elizabeth Costello, that "animals are not believers in ecology" (Coetzee 151). We are told to believe based on the previous ruminations of Costello, who outlines early in part I "The Philosophers and the Animals" section that animals do not possess reason, and as a result, animals cannot hope to comprehend the way in which the complex ecosystems that are present in the study of ecology in any meaningful way (Coetzee 137). This claim is important to Costello in that it is the very foundation of everything else she argues within her debate, as she cites that to approach the ethics of the animal rights argument from any spectrum of our understanding of reason is to do so from a flawed point of view, as animals do not possess reason and therefore cannot be judged and evaluated under that system fairly, or even at all. While Costello's claims certainly present an interesting point, they are troubling and ultimately flawed in their approach. I strongly disagree with Costello's claim that animal are not believers in ecology because she is wholly enamoured with the idea of reason being an impossible judge of animal rights, going so far as to say that if reason is all she shares with her philosophical opponents, then she has no use for it (Coetzee 133). However, through Costello's assumption that she can speak ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Persuasive Speech On You Are Alone You are alone in a room. You have 2 minutes till your death. You have a phone. Do you make a call? Who do you call? Growing up I was led to believe that when you die it will be of old age, in a hospital bed with loved ones surrounding you. You are able to say goodbye to those you care for and tell them what you have been waiting and wanting to say. Even if they aren't there it is important to let them know everything and tell them what they mean to you. And no, this isn't just so you feel better about yourself it is one of you last acts on this earth, your last chance to say what needs to be said to those that matter to you. It isn't something that is normally talked about but it needs to be, it is something that will happen to just about everyone and you need to be prepared. Guaranteed, this is the hardest thing you will EVER have to do. You can't avoid it, it is something you will have to do. Many people believe that you should not make this contact to your family, you should just leave them alone. I think different. This is the last time they will ever hear your voice or read your message. This small act reflects who you are and is a part of you that will stay with those people forever. For those people that were tragically lost in the twin towers attacks, this a decision they were faced with. Many of their families had to answer or listen to these calls that their loved ones left that they are now so thank full of as "all I needed was that message, and I think that he ... • 5. Free Essay "Speaking of drunk, I have wine in my room. Shall we indulge? I've never seen you have more than a few sips, Maxen." He propped himself up on his elbows and kissed her. "I will drink. Let me dress and fetch the bottle." He hopped out of bed, and Audra admired his magnificent, muscular backside with a satisfied smile on her face and he slipped into his trousers, but the spotted a smear of blood on his lower arm. "Maxen, you're still bleeding." "Nothing to worry about." He dragged his tunic over his head and glanced over his shoulder at her. "But oh..." "What?" "I've gotten my blood all over that pretty face of yours." Maxen sat on the bed beside Audra, licked his thumb, and scrubbed the dried blood from her face. Then he leaned down and kissed her. "I don't want to stop kissing you or touching you," he said. "I think we can break for refreshment." He let out a playful growl. "I don't want to, but I will." After giving Audra another long kiss, he rose and padded from the room, and Audra stretched out in the bed. She was relaxed and inlove, and she pushed away any feelings of guilt. Those could be managed later. During this week, Maxen would be the husband of her heart, and if the gods saw fit to strike her down for her transgressions, it would all be worth it. Maxen's quiet footsteps padded back to the room; however, an unfamiliar voice spoke just outside the chamber door. "Sir Knight, would you and the queen care to share in the festivities downstairs? You are most welcome." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Twenty other students all there for the same reason. This was the experience of eight kids in the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee, and was captured by the 2002 film Spellbound . Although a majority of the movie is spent focusing on the students ways of preparing for the bee, the movie still captures what the students went through during the spelling bee, and their reactions if and when they were eliminated . All the students took advantage of their resources, and overcame obstacles, to put their all into preparing for the spelling bee, not matter their methods. While many people may attempt to find an excuse to prevent them from getting involved or studying, these students persevered, and some may have used these excuses for a reason to try harder. The overall theme is an important one, especially to the age group it was presented to for this event, 9th graders. In high school, grades matter more. Later on colleges will look at that, and a C you got in a class freshmen year could really affect you later on down the road. If you really do put your all into your grades, the hard work will pay off when it comes time to apply for colleges. Day after day, I'm always given a different name. They never call me by my real name, Basil. I'm an 8th grader that goes to Halfhill Middle School. I've been called fat, ugly, and worthless. I've been cutting for 4 months now. I don't know what to do with my life. I'm just lost. Life hasn't been the greatest lately. Every night screaming, and banging noises fill up my house. Constantly I pray I'm not next. My dad is abusive, but no one knows. First he goes for mom. Next, is my older brother, Jake. Then, it's me. I have bruises and scars that I have to hide in public. People ask me why I never let them come over... I'm afraid they'll get hurt, or judge me even more. I can't risk that. Beep, beep, beep. My alarm's ringing. I slowly slump across the room to shut it off. Time for another day of despair, and misery. I quickly throw my clothes on and sprint out the door, so my dad doesn't see me. I walk to the bus stop, where ignorant kids await to mock me like every other day. I slowly approach the crowd, staying behind them. I don't want to draw any attention. The bus creaks as it arrives at the bus stop. Creeaak. We all pile into the bus. Being my clumsy self I trip over the bus step. Everyone lets out a giggle. • 9. How Wars Always Have Disastrous Effects On Civilians Wars always have disastrous effects on civilians, in particular on children who are growing up in a world of violence and are surrounded by atrocities and deaths. It can be even more traumatic when children find themselves taking an active part in conflicts. Indeed in numerous conflicts, combatants aged under eighteen, and therefore considered as 'child soldiers', are involved. Although international law expressly prohibit the recruitment and use of youths aged under fifteen, about 300,000 child soldiers are currently taking part in hostilities, and many do not have the legal age to do so. Some are enrolled by force, but many volunteer for various reasons. Some claim that children should not have anything to do with political issues and wars and thus should not be prosecuted, while others claim that all children are not purely victims and may be partly responsible for their acts. This essay argues that because they are children, child soldiers cannot be prosecuted along with adults, and should rather benefit of support programmes in order to enable their reintegration into the civilian society. However this reintegration may takes years and cannot be successful until it is sure that children are no longer a threat for the society or for themselves, and it may require that children spend time in detention centers for minors until they are no longer a danger. The first part will focus on the different situations that can lead children to become soldiers. I will then explain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Public Speaking Short Story Public Speaking by Gustav W It was a cold and foggy morning, less than 3 degrees, but in the town of Sylvester this was considered warm, Sylvester was a town unlike others because it was home to the greatest adventurers of all time: Billy the Bold, Jumbo the Gibberish, Collin the cold butt and miss and Mr Appleby. And this is where our story begins. Jeff was out picking apples with his dog Dingelberry. After Jeff returned he decided he would become Sylvester's next great explorer he packed his things and set sail in his boat. After 20 minutes Jeff found out that he was a really bad sailor and had to turn back to land back at home Jeff thought of a solution where he would not have to sail or swim. Jeff stayed up all night to think of something and then in the morning Jeff had designed and made the perfect flying machine. Outside Jeff tried his hardest to heave the plane outside and just then his best friend walked by and with the added help of his friend they finally got onto the hill with a ramp at the bottom so the plane could take off. Jeff rolled down the hill and took off he soared through the sky but after a while Jeff realised that the fuel canister was extremely low so he had to turn back. Back at home Jeff had to think of a way to switch the fuel while In the air and he kept coming to the same conclusion someone or something would have to manually climb on to the wing and pour the fuel into the tank while the plane is still flying in mid–air over the treacherous ... • 11. Falling In Love : The Story Of Falling In Love Have you ever fallen head over heels for someone you thought was absolutely everything to you? Do you remember the butterflies in your stomach at just the touch of their hand, because I do. Falling in love is the closest thing to magic that some of us have experienced. Yet again, heartbreak is the closest feeling to death that I've felt. I remember the moment I first met my first actual boyfriend, it was at a race. Dee was very handsome in my eyes. He'd always find a way to motivate me on beating my personal record and never settling for less. Believe it or not, I felt as if he was my only source of happiness, everything was always great when he was around. I'd dream of marrying him, going off to college with him, and growing up together. • 13. Persuasive Essay : Bad Decisions And Consequences Everybody makes stupid mistakes that could have been prevented, but nobody in this world is close to perfect and will never be perfect. Good can actually come from making mistakes, by doing something wrong you are corrected and shown how to fix it by someone who has already made your mistake. Growing up I have made plenty of terrible decisions that lead to consequences in the end. Also, I have seen many of my close friends and family make mistakes that got them into trouble, but afterwards they learned a valuable lesson. I am going to tell you a story about one of my close friends who made a mistake and took full responsibility of his action and by doing so learned a valuable lesson that he can now pass on to people in his life. During the summer I fly down to Arkansas to visit my dad and work at a place called Camp Yorktown bay, which is a christian camp with different ages each week. We provide several different activities there and one of them is boats. At boats you can do any sport possible behind a boat that the kids want to learn and we the staff will teach them how. Our oldest age group, which is the last week we do an overnight trip on the boats. My Friend Chandler was on his way to fill up the boat after the long day of work. It was getting dark out and pretty soon he had to drive with knowledge of where the shallow spots were on the lake because you could no longer see the markers pointing out the shallow water. The mistake that he made was mixing up where he thought he was so he had no idea he was coming upon a very shallow part, next thing we he knows the boat makes a terrifying noise and it stops moving. I remember him telling me that he got really scared, and he had realized that the boat had ran aground. It wasn't that big of a shallow spot so by backing up he got free. The boat had seemed fine so he kept driving, when he got back to camp he realized that he had to tell our boss what had happened. The next morning right away Chandler went to our boss Jeff and started explaining what had happened that night. He took full responsibility and told my boss that he would try and pay for the damages somehow. But by being honest with him and not lying Jeff said that he did not have to pay any money for ... Remembering to take care of myself has never been a leadership habit I have been good at. It is apparent that not only should it be to take care of myself physically and emotionally, but also to keep up with the times. The day I'd fantasized about for weeks had finally arrived. I was aboard a plane headed to Orlando for one of the biggest cheer completions in the U.S. As we taxied down the runway and my stomach tightened. Was it excitement, anxiety, or nerves? I wasn't sure, but I embraced it all with a smile. The Florida heat followed me all the way to my hotel room. The flight was exhausting and long but there was no time to rest. After all the practicing was out of the way, we went into a long line to get on stage. After many minutes of anxiously waiting we were the next to go up. We all gathered in a circle to pray and say our last encouraging words to each other. When we finished the announcer automatically called us to stage. At last, we all nervously walked to our spot on stage. By this time I knew Ihad to give it all I had. Not seconds later the music started and we were all doing our routine. We fought for every stunt, tumble pass, and jump before we knew it the routine was over. We ran off stage with excitement, hugging our coaches and each other. The movie and the main character Lester Burnham are aiming to make us realise that life can be short therefore we should lead more meaningful lives. Through this, he takes us one year back which summarises his life and those around him. Outward appearances can be very deceiving as anyone can acquire superficial impressions. In this discussion, I will be examining closely on a number of identities that is found in 'American Beauty'. In the film, the characters are in the search for what they believed was their happiness. Too focused on finding what they deemed was happiness, they failed to consistently maintain coherent identities. Lester Burnham, a husband and a father, who is the protagonist of the film, feels ambushed at home and at work. He has little to no control of his life as his wife Carolyn strives to be the perfect American family. Lester unleashes from being controlled when he meets his daughter's best friend, Angela and sees her as a femme fatale and their neighbour's son, Ricky. Ricky introduces himself to Lester on one of Carolyn's business social function and gets along immediately while sharing a joint. • 20. 1999 Baseball Umpires Resignation The Major League Umpires Association (MLUA) was the union that represented Major League Umpires from 1970 to 1999. The MLUA ended up being decertified and replaced by the World Umpires Association (WUA) when Richie Phillips, the head of the MLUA since 1978 and known for his combative, antagonistic style, announced in July 1999 that 57 of the league's 66 MLUA members would submit resignations effective September 2nd. Richie Phillips assumption that the threat of the resignation of the umpires would force the Major League Baseball (MLB) back to the negotiating table to sign a new contract was erroneous and the scheme led to disastrous results for 22 of the umpires who handed in their resignations and had them accepted. In the end 11 umpires never got their jobs back and went on to retirement or other jobs. The MLUA umpires had struck several times in previous years (1979, 1984 and 1991) and had been locked out for the first days of the start of the 1995 baseball season under Richie Phillips tutorage. Each of these previous work stoppages had worked out in the umpires favor; they enjoyed huge increases in their pay scale, more job security, and better vacations. The MLB and MLUA always had caustic labor relations and tensions were soaring in the summer of 1999 as the MLUA's five year labor agreement was entering its final year. Almost as though a precursor to my love for the stage, before I realized that dream. I went to my grandma's house after school every day, she made me a snack and I would sit at the table to wait. While I waited, my companion would be a book, more specifically the next book in the Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osborne. I loved these stories because I could almost feel myself in the characters. I must say almost because neither of the characters was similar enough for me to say we connected, at least not all the time. But there were moments where it was easier to pretend we were similar especially then when connecting with a character really brought the story to life. The most important factor of school is learning and if students were to freely wear Halloween costumes, not only would it break dress code, it would also disturb the potential of learning that other students could have during the day. Some students like to wear large, bright, distracting costumes which would direct the attention off of the teacher or the subject that students are learning. To me, these distractions create ... • 32. 1999 Dbq Pros And Cons Declaring the ban of corporate and union independent expenditures unconstitutional the Supreme Court indeed ruled correctly, enforcing the idea that factions and liberty are essential to the functioning of a republican government and upholding the people's right to free speech guaranteed to them by the first amendment. In ruling the ban on independent expenditures of unions and corporations unconstitutional the Supreme Court reiterated the long standing belief of the framers and the public that factions are inevitable and necessary to the success of a republican government. In a republican government the power resides in the elected officials chosen by the public whom they represent. It is common knowledge that the public's opinions will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The idea that corporations and unions shouldn't be able to express themselves through independent expenditures directly violates the first amendment. The first amendment reads, "Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances," (Document C). Explicitly stating that no laws may be made to violate the people's freedom of speech the first amendment itself practically declares the denial of independent expenditures by corporations and unions unconstitutional. Both corporations and unions are formed by the people, they are simply groups of people with similar interests and by denying them the use of independent expenditures it is denying them of their freedom of speech. The concurring opinion in Citizens United v. FEC however argued that, "The Framers didn't like corporations, the dissent concludes, and therefore it follows (as night the day) that corporations had no rights of free speech," (Document K). The idea that corporations should have no rights simply because the Framers felt it should be so on the grounds of an old grudge is preposterous. As previously stated, corporations, like unions, are composed of the people, and the people have undeniable rights allotted to them by the Constitution. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. What Is The Theme Of The Kiss By Kate Chopin The Kiss "The Kiss" is Kate Chopin's short story about a woman scheming to marry a wealthy man. The story was written on September 19, 1894, and first published in Vogue on January 17, 1895. The contents of the story are as follows. The outside was still light, but the curtains were covered inside and the light smoke from the fireplace emitted a dim, strange light on the room, leaving dark shadows. Brantain was sitting in one of these shadows, and he was clenched and uncomfortable. Thanks to the darkness, he could comfortably direct his love–filled gaze to the girl sitting in the fireplace. The girl was so beautiful, she had a beautiful skin color for healthy brunette girls, and she seemed very calm as she stroked the silky feather of the cat in her lap. And occasionally, he looked glanced at his friend in the shadows. They were talking about different things, not what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the same way, he described the room as 'full of deep shadows', reflecting the relationship of Chopin Brantain and Nathalie, not all as they seem (at least for Nathalie). Something that is clear to the readers as they continue to read the story. Chopin seems to be discovering passion and money. Although it is clear that Brantain loved Nathalie at any stage in the story, the reader doubts that this love is mutually shared. There is an attitude saying that Nathalie married Brantain, not love, but rather a comfortable life with Brantain; A richman who is aware of the reader (as opposed to Harvy). It is possible that Chopin's women (who wrote the story) might claim that people have established financial security or stability, and instead of marrying love, many women should marry men who can. Give them financial security. Even if we do not like Nathalie Brantain (as it is with Harvy), it does not have economic independence to live his life as he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Molokai: The Australian 1999 Film The Australian 1999 film "Molokai" produced by vine international, displays the last 16 years of the famous sacred heart priest; Father Damien. The catholic priest was born on January 3rd in 1840, had an excellent education and during his college years decided to become a priest in 1860 (at 20). He worked in the sacred heart parish in New York until he was called to attention of the lepers suffering in Molokai when the offer came up, he took it immediately. His days at Molokai were spent helping the lepers and treating them as though they were equals. He attended their physical needs, such as food and water but he also attended to their spiritual and emotional needs as he converted many lepers and taught them the way of God. Through these actions... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such as in the beginning of his journey Father Damien has an in counter with an elderly man in a poorly made tent he eventually got to know his name (William Williamson) and a brief story of his past before catching leprosy. At the discovery of Williams faith Fr Damien encouraged him to change to the Christian life before he passes away. It processes with both characters being stubborn and refusing each other's ideas but in the last minutes of his life, William finally agrees to changing faith and then dies a Christian. Due to the successfulness of converting sinners he taught them that God can make them happy and can comfort them. Such as the time when Father Damien goes to "the Mad House". A den for desperate drunkenness and carousing. He has gone there because a mother tells him the gangs have taken her young daughter there. Father Damien confronts the gangs, but they jeer at him. Two men pick up a rotting, limbless, nearly faceless crone and laugh as she plants a kiss on the priest. The laughter ceases when Father Damien takes the old woman into his arms and kisses her in blessing and comfort. This scene shows that father Damien cares about them even when they are mocking him as it says "Be patient with those that are badly off, do not keep them waiting on your generosity. For the commandment's sake go to the poor man's help, do not turn on him away empty handed in his need" (Ecclesiasticus 29:8–12). Another time that father Damien represents this passage is the work of mercy that is, to bear wrongs patiently like the time the prime minister claimed that there must be no nuns, priest or doctors allowed into Molokai. Father Damien annoyed, waited patiently and helped the lepers by himself until the prime minister approved and thankfully near the end of the movie he got more people to come and help the lepers, thankfully they came at the perfect time ... • 35. The Story Of My Life "At some point, you have to realize that some people can stay in your heart, but not in your life," Sandi Lynn. The fear of losing a loved one is one of the worst things in life, and no matter how hard you try to get over it or how hard you fight against it, when the time comes, you are never going to be ready. I realized that when my grandfather died; too young to understand what death was, but old enough to experience the pain. Not only he died, also part of me did. "I will always be by your side, my little princess," were the words that came to my mind as I walk down to where we would meet. I smiled, as I remembered how much fun we always had" May 2009, Friday evening, I went out to the best pizza place in town, La Roca, to wait for my grandfather, who lived in another city and would come to visit me. As soon as I arrived I sat down in front of a big window, so that way we could appreciate the beautifulness of Mother Nature, something we both loved. For hours and hours, I waited patiently, and while waiting for him I remembered all the moments we shared together, all the places we went, and all the things he taught me, for example, to be strong. Since it was a while since we las met, I had so many things to tell him; I had earned two certificates of recognition and appreciation, and I also got all A's on my report card. I just wanted him to enter through the door so I could run into him with a big hug, but sadly he never showed up. His tardiness was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. A Short Story : A Story? When Pierce told the girl to run, he never expected her to outpace him. Instead of him being in the front like the typical movie hero, dragging the fragile female lead behind, his companion was pulling him to run faster. Pierce was damn sure all that swimming must have given the girl strong legs. He surely exercised, though he was no Flash. "Okay stop," Pierce said after twenty minutes of constant running. He bent over trying to catch his breath while the girl stood elegantly, her arms crossed. "Are you not exhausted?" He suddenly pretended to be alright, seeing that the girl was showing better strength and endurance than him. "You have to be fast during shark attacks," she said seriously. "Otherwise, you're lunch meat or dinner or breakfast . . . I'm not sure which one is which." Pierce figured she was a swimmer and maybe she was preparing for shark attacks. He couldn't really understand her. "Wait a minute, tell me how you can speak and chose to speak now?" He crossed his arm and stared at her accusingly. She shrugged. "I dunno." "Don't play that dumb game with me," he said suddenly. "This was all your plan, wasn't it?!" A realization dawned on him. She was wearing a male jacket, which probably belonged to her partner or something. "You were trying to get me arrested here in Alaska." He stepped closer to her in an attempt to intimidate. She cocked an eyebrow. "That's why you gave away my stuff to the cops! Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but I have the address ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Song Of Solomon Analysis "The Shit That Weighs You Down" All people possess the ability to fly, the inability comes from living a life that weighs them down. Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison exemplifies the difficult journey of discovering identity through her character Milkman Dead. The novel follows him through the series of unfortunate events that make up his life and uncovers his complex family history that leads him to understand not only his heritage, but his identity and desire to fly. Everyone craves flight, whether conscious of it or not, but most let their other desires blind them and cannot "let go of the shit that weighs them down" (Morrison 179). Revenge consumes the life of the avenger, ruining it more that they could ever ruin their victim's life, as Song of Solomon clearly depicts through the contrast between the inability and ability to fly. Once the need for revenge developes, life becomes a struggle to hurt that person for what they did. The Christmas letter Hagar receives from Milkman provoked such a reaction through its " word 'gratitude' and the flat out coldness of 'thank you' that sent Hagar spinning into a bright blue place... everything frozen except for an occasional burst of fire inside her chest that crackled away until she ran out into the streets to find Milkman Dead" (99). She quickly descended to a need for revenge, represented by the quick pace developed through a paragraph consisting of one long a sentence. In a matter of moments her need for revenge consume her life and destroys any happiness she possessed. The ability to fly represents freedom. By weighing herself down with the need for revenge, flying becomes impossible leaving her trapped in one place her whole life. One the contrary, Milkman throughout the novel slowly allows himself to give up everything in his life weighing him down and learns the way it feels to fly. The contrast between the inability and ability to fly expresses the extent to which revenge destroys the life of the avenger rather than the victim of the avenger's wrath. Macon Dead's desire for revenge follows the same trend. Although his need for revenge fails to completely consume his life, it results in the permanent destruction of a close relationship. When Macon and his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Humanitarian Intervention: The 1999 Kosovan War The 1999 Kosovan War is a controversial event, usually used as a shining example of when humanitarian intervention has worked; unfortunately, when examined, it is unclear whether the international campaign for peace was an actual success or not. NATO justified their involvement by labelling Kosovo a 'humanitarian war' after diplomatic negotiations ground to a halt in March 1999 (Wood, 2007). A wide range of sources supported the war in Kosovo, such as David Clark in 2009, with 'Every member of NATO, every EU country, and most of Yugoslavia's neighbours, supported military action' (Clark, 2009). Leaders from the US and the UK respectively also stated 'upholding our values, protecting our interests, and advancing the cause of peace' (Clinton, 1999), and 'to avert what would otherwise be a humanitarian disaster in Kosovo' (Blair, 1999). However, it was not only ambassadors and high–profile politicians that took this stance; scholars and intellectuals were also vocal about their support for the war (Mellon, 2001). This implies that not only did the foreign western powers believe that a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, a 2001 Supreme Court hearing commissioned by the UN revealed that 'a systematic campaign of terror, including murders, rapes, arsons and severe maltreatments' by Serbians to Kosovans had occurred after NATO ceased the war effort, but it was not classed as genocide (BBC, 2001). This angered many Kosovans, as they felt as though the Serbian treatment of them was horrific enough to be classed as a war crime. On the other hand, since the Serbian killings were decided not severe enough to be a genocide, it may be interpreted that NATO's humanitarian intervention effort was a success, as a main argument against the war has always been the Serbian genocide that ...
