Carl Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist in the early 20th century who developed the ideas of extraversion and introversion and the four psychological functions of thinking, feeling, sensing, and intuition. He believed that a dialogue between the conscious and unconscious allows personal enrichment and that individuation is the process of integrating one's personality. Jung characterized people as either primarily inward-oriented introverts or outward-oriented extraverts, with most falling somewhere in between on the spectrum. His work influenced the development of personality type theories including Myers-Briggs.
