3. INTRODUCTION
A generating station in which diesel engine is used
as the prime mover for the generation of electrical
energy is known as diesel power station.
Diesel power plant is a non-renewable energy
resource.
Diesel power plants produce power in the range of 2
to 50MW.
6. DIESEL PLANT COMPONENTS
Diesel Engine
Air intake system
Fuel supply system
Exhaust system
Cooling system
Lubricating system
Starting system
7. DIESEL ENGINE
Diesel engine is the heart of the Diesel power plant.
It draws air from the atmosphere and compress in
the ratio of 12-20.
At the end of compression, fuel is injected and
thoroughly mixed with air.
The diesel engine is directly coupled with the
generator.
8. AIR INTAKE SYSTEM
The air required for the combustion of fuel inside
the diesel engine cylinder is drawn through the air
filter.
The purpose of the filter is to remove dust from the
incoming air.
To improve engine’s efficiency, the air supplied
must be as cool as possible.
9. FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM
Fuel supply system is the blood of the diesel
engine.
Fuel from the storage tank is pumped through a
filter into a smaller tank called all day tank .
All day tank supplies the daily fuel need of the
engine.
The tank is placed above the engine level to make
the fuel flow by gravity.
10. EXHAUST SYSTEM
The exhaust system discharges the engine exhaust
gas outside the building.
This exhaust gas from the engine is very noisy. In
order to reduce the noise a silencer is used.
Some good amount of heat in the exhaust gas is
recovered as heat in heat exchanger.
11. COOLING SYSTEM
The heat released by the burning of fuel in the engine
cylinder is partially converted into work.
The remaining heat passes through the engine
components and may cause damage to system.
In order to lower this temperature water is circulated
around the engine.
The water takes away heat form the engine and
water becomes hot. The hot water is cooled by
cooling towers and re-circulated for cooling.
12. LUBRICATING SYSTEM
This circuit includes lubricating oil tank , oil pump
and oil cooler.
The purpose of the lubrication system is to reduce
the wear of the engine moving parts . Parts of the
cylinder such as piston , shafts , valves must be
lubricated.
Lubrication also helps to cool the engine.
13. STARTING SYSTEM
The main function of this system is to start the engine
from cold condition with the help of an air compressor.
Starting of engine can be done by employing the following
methods
1. By an auxiliary engine
2. By an electric motor
3. By a compressed air system
14. ADVANTAGE OF DIESEL POWER PLANT
i. Very simple design also simple installation and
occupies less space.
ii. Limited cooling water requirement.
iii. Quickly started and put on load.
iv. It can respond to varying loads without any
difficulty.
v. Smaller storage is needed for the fuel.
vi. Layout of power plant is quite simple.
vii. There is no problem of ash handling.
15. DISADVANTAGE OF DIESEL POWER PLANT
i. High Maintenance ,lubrication cost and
operating cost.
ii. Fuel cost is more, since in India diesel is costly.
iii. The life of diesel power plant is small.
iv. Noise is a serious problem in diesel power
plant.
v. Diesel power plant cannot be constructed for
large scale.
