Like the history of human beings, music also has its own history. From ballad opera to the present,
music has significantly evolved. Without the constant improvements, popular music nowadays
would not be where it is at. One of its main influences is from the eighties. The eighties is known as
the rock era. It is different than other eras because of its new sounds and rhythms. Thanks to digital
technology, it was easier to make both the replication of existing timbres and the creation of new
timbres. Also, the eighties introduced three new rhythms: the rock beat derived from punk, the
adaptations of the afterbeat rhythms of reggae, and the sixteen–beat rhythms. These three rhythms
were widely used in almost every song in the eighties.
Along with new sounds and rhythms, musical styles have also changed. The primary musical styles
of the eighties are pop, rhythm and blues, and rock. Each musical style has its own stars. For pop
music, the primary artists were Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna. For rhythm and blues
music, the stars were Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and Tina Turner. For rock music, the most
well–known artists were Bruce Springsteen and U2.
John Hopson, a drummer from a band called "Fastidious Ape", loves to listen to rock music due to

Throughout the years, musical styles have reflected the society of the time, therefore music has

alongside society but with technological advances and new ideas. Technology can allow new styles

new techniques along with his small, tight–knit band. "The Blue Mask" received excellent reviews
from critics and consumers because it allowed listeners to have a personal connection with Reed and

Lou Reed, a New York native, attended the University of Syracuse and studied poetry and

Brooks' poem "The Sonnet–Ballad" follows Stephen Henderson's idea on what makes a poem
"black" in some areas, and not so much in others. Starting with the first component, theme. One of
the themes this poem has is helpless. Meaning being targeted and not being able to help yourself.
She could not do anything about them taking her lover, and her lover has not choice but to follow
death. At the time this poem was written America was still going through civil right movement, so
this something at black people could relate to. Black were being targeted and oppressed, and there
was not much they could do about it. The next component is structure. This poem that Brooks
created is a combination of a sonnet and a ballad. This is what Henderson feels a black poem needs
to have, a mode. On thing that Brooks fail on in Henderson's eye is her form. Brooks does not create
this poem to mirror the African American language, or dialect. Brooks also did not do well on the
third component either. Brooks does not have much saturation in this poem she created. Even
though it does have some themes that African American people can relate to it does not hold up to
saturation. It lacks African American refers. In some area Brooks was able follow Henderson's ideas

region of the United States. However the Mountain range itself actually begins in the Canadian

Southern Appalachia alone includes three hundred counties covering most of West Virginia and the

The reason why history exists is because some people felt that certain events were so important that
they must be recorded down for future generations to see. Many forms of history exist in typical
forms such as text or photos, but some of history's defining moments are displayed in the form of

education because they already have a job to do as lower calles serfs working for white people. He
is saying that slavery is not a bad thing and that African Americans should stay slaves. In the second
stanza W.E.B disagrees, he said that "Charles and Miss can look another place for hand or cook". He
believes that African Americans should fight for their freedom and should be treated as an equal

The subject matter of "Ballad of the Bread Man" is the religious story of the birth, life and death of
Jesus. It has all the main events of the traditional story but it is done in a modern style. The meaning
of the story remains but most of the particulars have changed. For instance in the poem a "bishop",
"five start general", and a "head of an African country" represent the kings.
Charles Causley has bought the story up to date so it appeals to people living today, especially

The bread is a symbol of Jesus' kindness and generosity that was so cruelly ignored.
Charles Causley changes a lot of the facts of the story, without changing the moral and message. He
uses words such as "newspaper",
"TV", "election" that were obviously not present at the time of the original story. When reading the
Bible version it is sometimes hard to think it was not set in a different world to the one today. So he
uses these modern words so people living today will be able to identify with the story.
When he says "bullet–proof limousine" I don't think he is just using it for modernisation though. I
think Charles Causley is implying that the kings were protected and safe in their journey, almost in
an evil way. It signifies they have nothing in common with the people they are reigning over. It is
also in contrast to how vulnerable Jesus is.
The tone of the poem is amusing at the beginning. Causley uses humour in his poetry, which I
believe again is to appeal to children. He creates images of God "sitting in his big blue chair",
Gabriel "in the shiny gear" and of the neighbours gossiping that Mary has been "up to no good".
These are funny because it is looking at the story from a new perspective. Before reading the poem
you have not thought of it in this way. It brings another layer to the traditional story.

Brown, Brown uses the typical quatrain stanza to create a song–like poem one could imagine
singing while traveling down a river, "Little Muddy, Big Muddy, Moreau and Osage, /Little Mary's,
Big Mary's, Cedar Creek, /Flood deir muddy water roundabout a man's roots, /Keep him soaked and
stranded and git him weak" (Strand and Boland 94). The words he chose roll off your tongue as they
are spoken, and are symbolic of the water as it moves. Each stanza grows more musical as the poem

The Chaser Alan strode out the door just as skittish as he was when he walked in. He went over his
plan in his head a countless amount of times. He was meeting Diana for dinner that night. He was
going to put the potion into her wine. Diana wasn't aware that Alan had such a tremendous
admiration for her. He was strolling along, almost to the restaurant when a bluebird swooped down
and snatched the love potion from Alan's grip. "Ah–ah–oh you come back here bird! That's mine!"
shrieked Alan. He dashed after the bird until he could no longer run. The bird landed, and Alan
could see the bird sipping the potion. Alan's jaw dropped. He pondered upon what it would do to
animals. The wise man hadn't said anything about animals. "That was supposed to be for Diana!
Now what am I going to do?" Alan spoke out loud to himself. The bird was staring at him. "Go

Pop music has a very heavy emphasis on rhythm and harmony. Many people in the music industry
have tried to segregate the music that's been created by labeling jazz and blues with the derogatory
title of "race music," or music that was created by or appealing to only colored people, and
