How Did Civilization Influence The Development Of Indus...
In Ancient India, the Indus River area help build and flourish one of the earliest civilizations. The
Indus Civilization flourished through in areas of economy and transport, cultivation, and religion.
The structure of these people was so unique and worked so well for the civilization for a long time,
well until it didn't. The culture of these people helped most other countries build the base of their
culture and gave the basic idea of what a civilization is. The civilization was first formed in 3100
B.C. in a time period known as the bronze age. They lived in the area which is current day north–
eastern Afghanistan to north–western India Economy in the Indus Civilization was a major
component to their everyday lives. They made a lot of jewelry,

The Clash Of Civilizations: The Clash Of Civilization
I. Introduction
As being stated by Samuel P. Huntington, the Clash of Civilization is a hypothesis in which the
primary sources of conflicts in the post–cold war era are more dominant to the people's cultural and
religious identities. Civilization has three attributes which are the objective elements – language,
history religion, customs, and institution; the subjective elements – variable levels of self–
identification; and civilization itself is dynamic – they rise and fall, divide and merge. Dialogue
between civilizations are also needed and will give significant impacts for not only both civilizations
but also for the world. This paper would like to discuss and analyze two cases about the possibility

Conch Civilization
When we attempt to change a civilization for our own benefit we can end up destroying ourselves in
the process. Just like when a group of boys were stranded on a deserted island. They aimed to create
a civilization among themselves. The conch, very important in the novel, was the the first rule
formed on the island. The conch was required to be held by the speaker at the littluns meetings. The
children affirmed that only one person holding the conch will be allowed to speak at the meeting.
"Let him have the conch!" (35). Piggy shouted at the meeting when the boys believed about the
beast. "We got to have rules and obey them" (42). The boys set up rules so everyone would be happy
on the island, because they are part of their very own civilization.

Egyptian Civilization And Greek Civilization
The early human lived life by hunting, fishing and collecting wild plant, and their life was not
organized. About 5000 years ago, a complex and organized way of life began in some part of the
world. People live together in town, cities and others centers and started farming, industries, and
also started writing, painting and other method of living. Later, there were specialize occupations
emerged, complex religions took form and social diversion increased, and these changes lead to the
birth of civilizations. There were many ancient civilizations in the world like, India civilization,
Chinese civilization, Middle East civilization, Mesopotamian civilization, Egyptian civilization,
Greek civilization, Roman civilization and others which greatly contributed to the development of
the world history. Each civilization had their own way to follow culture, religions, public life,
economic life, and others. Therefore, in this paper, I will describe how Indian civilization, Egyptian
civilization and Greek Civilization made impacts in the way that we see today's world and how
these civilizations affected people's life.
Indian civilization was one of the first civilization in world history. Indian civilization is staged in
two steps: About 2600 BCE is known as Indus Civilization and about 1500 BCE is known as Vedic
civilizations. Indus Civilization was peaceful civilization compared to other civilizations. All
evidence shows that Indus civilization was grown under diverse society

3 Characteristics Of A Civilization
3. Creating a Civilization
3. A. For a social organization to qualify as a civilization, it must have the following characteristics:
1. City/Cities – A city is a large community of people living close together and a center for trade for
a larger place.
2. Permanent records – Writing played a vital role in the earliest civilization. It was first developed
by the people of Sumeria. However, writing is not always necessary for civilization.
3. Advanced Technology – It is specialized knowledge to transform the natural environment and
human society.
4. Specialized Workers – In early human societies, farming allowed one people to produce food
surpluses thus allowing other to focus on other tasks.
5. Government – It is necessary for a civilization to have a stabilized government for them to
organize themselves and to effectively function as one.
6. Social Classes – With increased trade and specialized labor cities, distinction of social classes
become apparent along lines of wealth.
7. Buildings – Buildings give out a sense of unity amongst the people living together. ... Show more

D. I don't think I would be able to survive living during this era. Their life was just pure work and
service to their ruler. They are forced to do labor and were treated cruelly. I don't think I can stand
living life in such simplest condition. Everything is accompanied by work that I don't think people
of the past have enough leisure time. Also, I don't think I would make a good servant for I was
raised by my parents not to be submissive against my own will. If I were to revive one part of life in
the past, it would be how they are amazing artists. I have always admired pieces of art that conveys
a story and at the same time very informative. Earliest human were known to be great inventors and
artists. What lessons can we learn from these historical changes is that not all things remain
constant. Even the greatest civilization collapsed without anyone knowing it. We should expect

Truth Of Civilization
Lord of the Flies by William Golding includes many truths of society, including how one's authority
can influence the way people live. The most important truth Golding was trying to explain, was that
a civilized society such as the boys living on the island can alter greatly to savagery. The boys
experience pain, fear, and betrayment while being stranded on the island. Golding discusses the truth
of civilization by describing the way the boys live on the island similar to The Giver and The
Hunger Games.
The Lord of the Flies explores the truth of civilization by describing the lifestyle on the island.

Civilization Vs Civilization
According to the dictionary, underneath the word civilization, it states "an advanced state of human
society, in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and the government has been reached."
(Dictionary)However, Huntington describes to some degree, something polar opposite, civilization
as a meaningful entity. That those nations, and its people, will not only be defined by what modern
technology it possesses, but also by their cultural identities and the regions in which they reside
within. Therefore, meaning that our history, our traditions, our religions, and, our values, are the
basics, of what our civilization, according to Huntington, will be defined upon, in the distant future.

However, could this not also be similar to patriotism at the extremist level? Patriotism has divided
us as a civilization throughout history. One moment, in particular, could relate the two. April 19th,
1995, a day that will be remembered in American History, the day the Oklahoma City Bombing
occurred. None other than, Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols carried out this heinous act. The
bomb itself subsequently eliminated 168 people and injured another 680 innocent. (Wikipedia)
These two individuals believed that they were to be the beginning of the people's revolution,
freedom from the government's wrongdoings.Interestingly enough, this display of extremism was
commenced on Patriots Day. Also oddly enough, it shares an anniversary with another unforgettable
day, the Boston Marathon Bombings. Who is the martyr and who is the patriot? America has
occupied the Middle East for a little over 10 years now, forcing our democratic ideology on their
civilization. Being a military veteran, I tend to have mixed emotions about this topic. Personally, I
feel we both hinder and help aid those in Iraq. After 9/11 I felt a great sense of urgency to protect my
values as an American citizen. However, upon arriving I found many of the people that resided there
were in great turmoil themselves. People living in conditions that were so inhumane, that I was left

How Did Civilization Affect The Development Of Civilization
Beginning in approximately 3500 BCE through the peak of the PErsian empire in 200's BCE,
humans living together created order and structure in natural, human, and built environment
systems. The development of writing systems, religious systems, and economic systems led to the
growth of civilization and empire.
Writing systems affected the growth of civilization because it developed understanding between
people. In 3500 BCE, a writing system was created in the Sumerian culture. It was called cuneiform,
the sumerians recorded their writing on rocks. The language helped to better trade, laws, and
storytelling. Typically, it helped stories stay factual when passed down through generations. Shorty
after the language was created, men discovered math. The Persian people based their writing on the
arabic alphabet, but they too used cuneiform to communicate. The cuneiform language spread to
tribes and different tribes, making it easier for trade. THe Sumerians created a language that helped
the development of civilization and structure through the people. ... Show more content on

Economic systems developed organization between trade and people. The Sumerians lacked raw
materials for trade, but were rich in crops. Trade was constructed between them and Southwest Asia.
Another tribe that took part in trade were the Persians, they were rich in water, land, and gold. Trade
was developed between them and several other tribes. This changed the birth of civilization because
it truly was the first development of trade, still today we use the method of trade. During the ancient
times, men had political power in the sumerian culture. Typically, the women took care of their
homes and children, in some occasions they were allowed to be educated if they were upper class.
The economy was good depending on the tribe and agriculture... the better the crop the better the
economy rate. At times some tribe economies were really bad because they lacked resources to

Civilization Paper
Civilization is a term used in many different ways. It can be defined as; people who eat the same
kind of foods,
People who live together, people who speak the same language, and so on. Yet each way that it is
defined relates towards the same topic; Humans and their existence on the planet. Civilization is
known greatly as a group of humans or animals that live generally together and practice the same
habits. Civilization, according to some historians, first came into play in the year 3000 BCE. These
historians look at civilization as people who have the same dietary needs and habits, who practice
these habits regularly in order to survive. A couple of years before 3000 BCE, the world went

These changes have led to more numbers of civilizations.
With of all the new little civilizations popping up, and all the different conditions, and not everyone
being able to grow what they need to survive. The people had to resort to trade.
Trade helps civilizations grow to be more populated and stronger. Trade also encourages travel,
which eventually leads to exploration. And by people exploring they find either more civilizations to
trade with, or more land to expand onto.
The Mesopotamians are one of the first major civilizations to come into existence. They were able to
do this because of the agricultural revolution. The Mesopotamian region was like a "big dust
bowl" and much of the time was very hot.
Yet there was also times when there was too much water, and the rain flooded all of the peoples
crops, and turned the water into swamp like conditions which were unsafe to drink. In order to fix
this and make their civilization strive and survive, the people had to make canals, dams and
irrigation systems. These things helped the crops grow greatly. Because of the great success of their
produce, they were able to trade with other cultures for livestock, and other kinds of food and goods
necessary to live and survive.
Once in a while a culture will find something that they are really good at making, or something that
they can make and others cannot because of their geography and environment.
Some things that some cultures could make are

Western Civilization Similarities
While learning about the Western Hemisphere civilizations I have noticed a few similarities between
them. For example, the Anasazi and the Woodland cultures both grew and cultivated their own food,
such as corn (Ancient America Lecture, Slide 24 and 29). Another similarity that I found was that
the Incas and the Aztecs both worshiped the sun god (Ancient America Lecture, Slide 41 and 48).
On the other hand, I noticed a couple differences between the civilizations. For instance, both the
Mayans and Aztecs performed human sacrifices regularly, but the Incas did not (Openstax, Chapter
1, section 7 and 13). The Incas would instead offer the gods food, clothes, and coca leaves and
would only perform human sacrifices in times of dire emergency (Openstax,

First Civilizations Influence On Egyptian Civilization
#12 Egyptian civilization, like other First Civilizations, did not develop by itself; many different
pastoral groups or civilizations influenced Egyptian civilization through trading goods and culture,
and helped Egyptians to develop its own unique culture. Being one of the greatest civilizations,
Mesopotamia, located between Euphrates and Tigris river, influenced Egypt civilization greatly, as
they were close in location. Because they could interact easily with each other, trading flourished,
and many goods and cultural insights were exchanged. Wheat and barley, which were the main food
source of Egyptians, were brought from Mesopotamia, which means that they had maintained the
mutual relationship between them, as well as helping Egyptian

In the article Huntington describes civilizations as a "cultural entity" comprised of many different
nationalities, ethnic groups' religious groups and regions. We could use and example as those that
live on the east coast of the United States differ from those on the west coast. Here we could talk
about the difference between their politics their lifestyles and maybe their economies regional and
state. However, both may be different in some form most will identify as American, which will
distinguish them from Mexico or Canada. This makes civilizations. "A civilization is thus the
highest cultural group of people and the broadest level of cultural identity people have short of that

Contrasting Ancient Civilizations
Most people believe that all ancient civilizations were the same: they all lived with a steadfast
loyalty to their one and only king that ruled all of the lands, civilizations only achievements were
monumental buildings, and they vacuously attacked neighboring societies to gain more land for
millennia. While some of this knowledge is true to an extent, civilizations accomplished an
abundance more than some realize. Some fail to register that early civilizations are unique from each
other. Egypt and Mesopotamia were two distinct civilizations. Despite similarities such as both
being river civilizations, Egypt and Mesopotamia contrasted with each other in the areas of, type of

The Egyptians viewed the afterlife as a happy place filled with food and the gods. In contrast, the
Mesopotamians viewed the afterlife as a place of horror and fear. The vital cause for the differences
of viewpoints in the afterlife is the River they depended on. Both civilizations saw the afterlife as an
extension of their current life. With this being said, the Nile was giving and gave them lots of water
along with silt, which was crucial for the survival of their crops. In turn, the Egyptians perspective
on the afterlife was gracious. Conversely, the Mesopotamians depended on the Tigris and Euphrates
rivers. While it did bless them with fresh water, on occasions, the river would grow violent and
cause a catastrophic amount of damage to their homes and crops. Since they also viewed their
afterlife as an extension to their current lives, they saw it as a dark and horrible place that wasn't
wanted. However, both civilizations accomplished achievements through religion and for other
reasons.
The last way Egyptians and Mesopotamian civilizations diverge and converge with each other is
because of their accomplishments. They both accomplished mathematics, medicine, architecture of
their structures dedicated to their gods, and calendars. Both probably accomplished these specific
tasks because each either helped them survive or helped them religious wise. One achievement that
was exclusive to the Egyptians was mummification. In ancient Egyptian

Compare And Contrast Civilization And Western Civilization

birth of the western civilization through the years predating the 1300s. Both narratives navigate
through thousands of years of history, exploring the political, economic, social and military aspects
of the evolution of the western civilization. Whilst both texts discuss the birth and creation of
civilization as defined by the western world, the readings vary stylistically as well as in their
elaborations of the evolution of society. While their themes of civilization such as religion, and
agriculture coincide with one another the approach in their discussion differs.

While Mesopotamia is greatly defined through it development of literature through writings such as
Hammurabi's code and religion through Babylonian gods and goddesses, Egyptian civilization is
greatly defined through the development of irrigation and agriculture. Egyptian civilization as
described in great lengths in the, "Western Heritage" was centered around the Nile River. With the
aid of the river, Egyptians were able to develop a complex agricultural system of planting and
harvesting, which allowed for a surplus of crops incomparable to the rest of the ancient world. By
having an advantageous agricultural system, Egypt was able to place their focus elsewhere, allowing
for unified society rather than having individual city states. Under this unified society, religion was
the dominant factor, leading to one of the world's first theocracies, as well as some of the western
civilization's greatest dynastic rulers. Although Egypt's unified state allowed for it to become one of
the most highly developed civilizations of the western world, it also led to its destruction. Due to its
highly unified state, Egypt rarely engaged in warfare amongst itself and other civilizations. This led

Causes Of The Sumerian Civilization
The fall of a civilization is foreseeable, preventable, and looming at all times. By looking within our
own history one can see the seeds of old destruction sprinkled within our own civilization. Within
our own civilization one notices the seeds of the military overspending that crippled the Roman
Empire, the deforestation that led to the downfall of the Easter Islands, and overuse of the land that
Destroyed Maya, and a divisiveness that obliterated the Sumerian Civilization. By noticing that all
of these factors are present in our society today and that all of them are preventable we can attempt
to learn from our past and most our civilizations beyond the turning points of those who came
before us. Rome was a massive civilization that had thrived for 453 years before it fell, many have
heard the tales of barbarians assailing Rome and bringing it to it's knees, however in it's prime Rome
could have defended against such threats. However during the fall of Rome, Rome was not at it's
prime, years of rampant military overspending, a massive territory that required an inflated military
to defend and political corruption had hollowed out the power of Rome as a nation. As a nation of
fast expansion Rome had pockets of it's empire rebelling at all times with the Servile wars being an
example of the devastation these revolutions could bring. These revolutions along with rapid
changes in leadership and with that, different ideas on how to solve the problems facing the republic

Early Civilization
All civilizations, whether old or new, strive for advancement. In order to advance, certain techniques
and characteristics have to be combined and manipulated to achieve this progression. "A civilization
is a complex culture in which large numbers of human beings share a variety of common elements."
Examples of these early civilizations that used similar characteristics to flourish were the Sumerians
in Mesopotamia and the Egyptians in Egypt. A civilization is formed by several characteristics. The
most important being the need for a sufficient group of people. Next would be a central place for
these people to congregate. These structures typically would be used for religious purposes as well
as a place to delegate how the societies would operate. People in these early civilizations would
typically live closer to the central structure. This is turned led to the creation of writing to record and
communicate between people of these early societies. In these early civilizations, people relied
heavily on their neighbors and would work together to keep prospering. Early examples of these
characteristics forming a civilization would be in Mesopotamia and Egypt civilizations.
Mesopotamia was an area between "the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Southwest Asia."
Mesopotamia received little rainfall yet lands were plentiful and rich. The overflow of the bordering
rivers would bring in "fertile silt" to

The Mysteries Of Early Civilizations
Uncovering the mysteries of early civilizations is a task not many scientists have successfully and
accurately attempted. Jared Diamond's main focus of his Pulitzer Prize winning book/documentary
Guns, Germs, and Steel is the claim that the 3 biggest mysteries of civilization depended mostly on
accidental agriculture. This has been met with controversy because Diamond rarely includes other
factors such as guns, steel, and actual Eurasian history. But is Guns, Germs, and Steel accurate and
entertaining enough to live up to it's hype? Diamond opens up the documentary by saying he spends
a considerably long amount of time in New Guinea, learning the culture of the people and studying
birds. He meets a man named Yali, who asks "why do white men have so much cargo? (ep. 1)"
Diamond focuses most of his research on this statement. However, unlike Yali, he doesn't blame a
specific race saying "To me, any explanation based on race is absurd. I know too many really smart
New Guineans to believe there's anything genetically inferior about them. (ep. 1)" Instead of
pointing an argument directly at a specific people group, Diamond focuses his findings more on
geographical location.
One of Diamond's arguments pins the uprising of Eurasian civilization and power on agriculture and
animals, rather than technology. Diamonds says that pure hunting of animals wasn't enough to
sustain a complete civilization. "But the fundamental problem with hunting is that it's never been a
productive way

The Veil: Definition Of Civilization
What is civilization? People have countless meanings of this word based on their personal
reasoning. The book definition of civilization is the stage of human social development and
organization that is considered most advanced. Civilization is a community of people who are living
together. These people share beliefs, religion, and language. They live in the same region and come
together to live more efficiently. Individuals in these communities grow up with the common beliefs
and culture of their civilizations, "they have been brought up in a certain part of the world, they have
formed perhaps quite unconsciously a deep attachment to its landscape and speech, its traditional
customs, its food and drink, its songs and jokes" (Priestly 230). If the people in these communities
are attached to their region, as Priestly expresses, then they're more likely to contribute to their
civilization. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the people who form these communities want to work on the development of their civilization
then they must contemplate ideas better than ever before. That will guide them to being able to

There will be a variety of thought processes, beliefs, and other aspects of a civilization in different
societies. They may be based on where a civilization is located, the people of which it's composed,
or simply on past events and experiences. Regardless of the reason civilizations will always operate
differently. In "The Veil" Marjane Satrapi shows how when the new leader became in charge of the
society their cultures and beliefs were completely altered. Although it didn't necessarily compare

Civilization And Savagery
The theme of the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding is the conflict between the human
impulse towards savagery and the rules of civilization. Throughout the book, the conflict is aimed at
the main character Ralph and Jack, who both represented civilized young boys in the beginning of
the novel, but quickly developed into savages. Jack was the first of the young boys to experience
savagery by trying to overthrow Ralph as chief, and by brutally hunting pigs. While Jack and the
hunters were seeking food they came across a sow, "Then Jack found the throat and hot blood

Ralph also focused greatly on keeping a signal fire going as one of the boys only hopes of getting
off the island. Jack is also interested in gaining power over the boys by offering them food, shelter,
and protection against the beast. Jack's desire for more power ruins the friendship between all the
boys and resembles in the creation of Jack and his group of savages. The more civilized group of the
boys is Ralph and Piggy, while they still focus on their main goal of surviving and getting off the
island. While the two separate groups argue, Piggy compares the savages to themselves, "Which is
better–– to be a pack of painted Indians like you are or to be sensible like Ralph is?" ... "Which is
better–– to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?" ... "Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting
and breaking things up?" (Golding 180). That quote shows Piggy talking the savages and comparing
them to Ralph, as a civilized human, and to them as a group of savages without any rules or order.
Nearing the end of the novel, the conch was broken and Piggy was murdered, nearly all of the boys
had lost any sense of civilization within them and they all became some sort of savage, even Ralph

Around 9000 B.C.E, the early stage of civilization formation was indicated by semi–nomadic
society. Having nomadic soul, however, the semi–nomadic tried to reconstruction the earlier
civilization and develop it greater than the old one in the cultural and geography component (Butler,
2012). The nomads tried to organize their life simply. This organization is the pioneer of civilization.
The males hunt for wild animals and the females gather the plants and also cultivate them. Yet, this
cultivation could not stay longer because of lessening of ground fertility. Since there was no
knowledge of how to cultivate well, the production of harvesting decline along with diminishing of
ground fertility. Again, this group got a deficiency of foods, and should wander to find the new land

Justice In Ancient Civilizations
Since the beginning of time, society imposes us different rules of etiquettes that we need to follow.
Keep your mouth close while eating, be polite with older people, hold the door for ladies etc... These
are actual ones but its interesting to see the evolution of the etiquette through time. At a certain point
in the middle age, it was convenable to burp as loudly as you can after eating to show your host that
the food was good. In fact, the rules of etiquettes are strongly linked with social values like respect.
Other social values were really important in ancient civilizations. Despite the lack of organisation of

base . It's interesting how these texts are advanced for the time they were written. Has a leader, you
need a way to spread these ideas through all the civilization. They did it without printers or social
network, this is pretty impressive. Some surprising policies have been made following this justice
concept. For example, ''Eye for an eye'' law was made by Mesopotamians to penalized the criminal
by doing him the same thing he did or something equivalent. In our modern society, we would think
this is horrible and this practice would be forbidden but in these times, it's a way to increase justice
and make their world more equal. Moreover, using a strong military system, Greek civilizations like
Sparta have a justice system based on their military order. Some could say that this is not justice
because there is not really an establish system but the will to regulate activities of the population is a
form of justice for me. In brief, civilizations are sharing the same justice desire but use different
method to reach their

Is Civilization the Answer to the Chaos?
As Mark Twain once said, "Civilization is the limitless multiplication of unnecessary necessities."
The society believes that civilization is the solution to disorder and chaos, but sometimes it creates
more problems than solutions. To the imperial Europeans, turning the natives into civilized human
beings was the main goal, and that is why they felt as if it was their job to take over the natives'
lands. In general, civilization is seen as a solution to a utopian realm.
William Shakespeare in The Tempest and Michel de Montaigne in Of Cannibals narrow their focus
on the idea of "nature vs. civilization." Both authors discuss the idea of how nature is replaced by
civilization and the outcome is not as expected. Shakespeare portrays the idea of Caliban's nature
being wiped away by Prospero, who thinks his knowledge is the best weapon he has so he should be
the one to control the island. Montaigne, on the other hand, discusses how the natives are better off
by sticking to their nature than being civilized because the Western society does not realize that it is
barbaric also.
William Shakespeare, in The Tempest, writes about Prospero who has the ability to manipulate
things by using magic. He and his daughter now live in this island with a slave named Caliban.
Prospero has taken over the island and decided to control everything. He can manipulate everyone
and everything. He thinks having a lot of knowledge makes him the leader of the island. Prospero's
hunger for power comes

The Eltanin Civilizations, The Civilizations Of The Middle...
Welcome to Crash Course Civilizations 101! Today we will discuss one of the most prominent
civilizations of the middle kingdom, the Eltanin civilization. Now before we jump in let's talk about
what exactly is a civilization. Textbook definition defines it as: the process by which a society or
place reaches an advanced stage of social development and organization, but a civilization is more
than just that. It is the culture a group of people possesses which is sustained over a period of time
which shapes history in one way or another. Most civilizations all stemmed from one life changing
event, the agricultural revolution. As the first agricultural revolution occurred from 10,000 BC to
2000 BC, people started to settle and cultivate land by planting crops and raising animals. Although
blossoming from different areas around the world, they all had certain similar aspects such as
developing unique ways of supporting themselves and upholding their society. The start of this
transition is known as the middle kingdom. Today we will be discussing one of the most prominent
civilizations of the middle kingdom, the Eltanin civilization, who lasted what scientists like to call,
A LONG TIME..Before we dive into who they were and how they impacted history, let's talk about
how they originated.
The Eltanin civilization originated from the foothills of the Andes Mountains in 2055 BC, where
they migrated northeast to modern day south Brazil and north Argentina, slowly transitioning

When considering the greatest impact on Western Civilization, whether the Hebrew civilization had
most to contribution. Even though the Sumerians and Egyptians civilization also contributed greatly
to the development of Western Civilization, the Hebrew civilization had a unique characteristic
which made them have strong power over other civilizations. The Hebrews saw God as creator and
believed that God is in control of His creation. I will demonstrate the argument by comparison of
these three civilizations. For the Sumerians, they firstly invented the wheel as useful tool. Not only
that, they are the first who discovered the movements of planets. Also, the Egyptians abided near the

Eight Characteristics Of Civilization
A civilization is an society with highly developed culture and technology. Civilizations have distinct
characteristics, but historians do not all agree on which characteristics are the most important. Some
important characteristics are stable food supply, organized government, cities, social
class/structures,art/technology and etc. These are all important, but in my opinion the three most
important characteristics of an civilization are organized government, stable food supply, and
art/technology.
One of the most important characteristics is organized government because it does more than all the
other characteristics. One reason,is because "The government would order these, although costly,to
aid and benefit the community."(Eight features of civilization)The meaning of this quote means that
the government did help out the city with problems. Another reason,is because "the government

Civilization and Freedom Essay
Section – 1
INTRODUCTION
Definition of Civilization
Civilization occurs when a society moves to an advanced state of social development with complex
legal, political and religious organizations. There are several definitions for civilization, for instance,
"the people slowly progressed from barbarism to civilization"; "the quality of
excellence in thought and manners and taste"; "a man of intellectual refinement";
"humans living together in an organized way".
Freud defines, "civilization is a process in the service of Eros, whose purpose is to combine
single human individuals, and after that families, then races, peoples, and nations into one great
unity, the unity of mankind. But man's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When civilization consciousness develops with the knowledge of physical and social environment,
and it enforces the limits and extents to these, primary drives.
Further Freud divided the human psyche into three separate but interacting elements: the id, the ego
and the super ego. Freud described the id as a reservoir of psychic energy, the pool of biological
drives that arise from our needs for food, water, warmth, sexual gratification, aggression, avoidance
of pain, and so forth. And he believed that these drives direct all human behavior. The id is an
unconscious force, with no link to objective reality. It seeks one thing only: the discharge of tension
arising from biological drives. The id's exclusive devotion to gratification without regard for logic or
reason, reality or morality, is called the pleasure principle. According to Sigmund Freud human
beings are essentially biological creatures with strong instincts, one among them is aggression, it as
Freud calls: "an original self subsisting instinctual disposition in man . . . the greatest
impediment to civilization." At this point the difference between primitive and civilized man
arises. Primitive man could satisfy his bodily needs in his id, as it is, whenever and wherever he
wanted. Thus he could achieve his freedom fully in his gratification of his primary needs. But even
at that age, the

Ancient Civilizations And The Egyptian Civilization
William McNeill, author of A World History, is in accordance with the belief that ancient
civilizations who were in constant contact with conflict and war could develop a more advanced
system of law, bureaucracy, and market prices. By that logic, Mesopotamia would have been far
more advanced than Egypt. For example, Mesopotamia frequented attacks from barbarians because
of the lay of the land. They also had trouble controlling war between centers of industry due to the
inevitable struggle with the course of the river. On the Egyptian side, the high levels of land
surrounding the Nile, outside of where the Egyptian civilization laid its ground, made it very
difficult for barbarians to invade. Egypt also adopted the Sumerian influences and ... Show more

There are also many limits on women and marriage and divorce procedures. In Mesopotamian
society, the wealthy man who owned property, otherwise known as the "seignior," was the most
well–respected individual. The punishments for a seignior committing an act against another
seignior, a member of government, or another supreme institution like the state or church, was
highly extreme, mainly resulting in equal torture, ultimate death or death via thrown into the river.
For example, "If a seignior has destroyed the eye of a member of the aristocracy, they shall destroy
his eye" (32, R). However, if a seignior were to commit a crime against a commoner, slave, or
women, the punishment would be vastly less extreme. "If he has destroyed the eye of a commoner
or broken the bone of a commoner, he shall pay one mina of silver" (32, R). A system of law that is
not just for every punishment and for everyone, no matter the social class, is not a just system. By
instituting harsher punishments and inequality, Mesopotamia was establishing a foundation of
failure. On the other hand, Egypt's, The Book of the Dead, isn't necessarily a law code like the Code
of Hammurabi, but there is evidence of law within its context. Egypt believed highly in obtaining a
life free of wrongdoing in order to enter into the afterlife. After death, an Egyptian, more than likely
a wealthy man, stands in front of the hall of Two–Justices and renounces sin to

How Did Civilization Differ From Ancient Civilization
Throughout the centuries humans have greatly evolved. Originally nomadic tribes, people learned to
settle down and form civilizations due to the Neolithic Revolution. During this time humans learned
how to farm. This major discovery allowed us to create cities where we could rely on our own
supplies and labor for food rather than moving around to follow and hunt animals for food. For this
plan to work the people had to settle around the most ideal conditions for farming. Thus, most of the
successful ancient civilizations were formed around rivers. Ancient Egypt and Ancient India were
two of the greatest ancient civilizations and they relied on the rivers they were built around for a
surplus of food, trade, and cultural diffusion. The Nile River was the river ancient Egyptians
centralized their civilization around. This river valley provided many valuable resources to the
Egyptians. One example of this was the annual flooding of the river. According to World History

the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra. These rivers carry melted snow from the Himalayan mountain
range to the cities allowing the people of the Indus Valley to farm. (Esler Pg. 52) These rivers gave
the people of the Indus valley access to the Persian Gulf allowing them to trade with people of that
area. This caused the spread of Buddhism as well as new ideas being brought back to the Indus
Valley. One example of this is the Indus people's connections to Sumer. According to the text,
"Contact with Sumer may have stimulated Indus Valley people to develop their own system of
writing." To sum up, the rivers expanded the Indus Valley civilization by providing fertile soil and
by increasing the civilization's connections with other

How can some civilizations seem to be stuck in time with no development? Papua New Guinea was

and slowly got exposed to it overtime. The Inca did not obtain immunity because the only
domesticated animal they had was the llama. The llama didn't 4 give them immunity because the
Incas were not close to them, one reason is because they did not milk the llama. This resulted in no
exposure to smallpox. So when the Spanish came into contact with the Inca and accidentally brought
smallpox, the Inca fell ill. The immunity to smallpox made the Spanish incredibly powerful and the
Inca very weak and easy for the Spanish to conquer them. 95% of the Inca ended up dying. Even
though the Incas had a couple million people the Spanish were able to take over with only about 160

Why Civilizations Fall
There have been many civilizations throughout history. Obviously they're not all around anymore,
this shows that all civilizations have to fall eventually, but how?
Civilizations have been around the world for a long time, this is because all societies have to fall.
The main reason they fall is because of the misuse of resources, the corruption of a leader, and
tension between different classes/communities in the civilization. There are several different
examples of these things corrupting civilizations. Overall, there are many different reasons
civilization fall, but the main reason are the corruptio of a leader, the misuse of resources, and
tension between the different classes/communities of its civilization. The three main reasons that ...

In Rome, they would often have poor leaders. The leaders would not address the problems the
people were dealing with, they were "out of sight, and out of mind". "Inheritance of the title of
Emperor was unstable; this led to power struggles, violence, and insecurity." (Manitoba k12 student
notebook) When people inherited the crown, that weren't ready for it, the leader would be seen as
corrupted. In Easter Island, the people had absolutely no power. And while this may not necessarily
be a bad thing, the leaders on Easter Island made decisions based on how they would be directly
affected, and not on how the people of the island would be affected. "In the past, some people on
Easter Island, namely the ruling class, were able to destroy other people and their homes, but now
some societies can destroy everything" (Peter Tyson) This ability to "destroy other people and their
homes" seems to be a downscaled version of the world currently. In Nazi Germany, Hitler, like all
dictators, got into the government by making decisions that the people like. But once he got into the
government, he abused his power to do things that didn't help the general public, only who he
wanted to help. "Once firmly in power, the leader of this society began planning for the ending of
the struggle between the different races of the society." (Secret Society #1) This "end of struggle"
was him eliminating them completely... That's definitely corruption if I've ever seen it. Probably the
reason with the most catastrophic results in civilizations. Stories of corrupted leaders in civilizations
are the most horrific and memorable. This reason will probably never be taken character, there will
always be corrupted people who gain

The Development of Civilization Essay
The Development of Civilization
Our civilizations are merely a wrinkle in time. Billions of years ago, during the Paleolithic Culture
people had only knowledge for basic survival. The Stone Age was a time for hunting and gathering,
building tools, and making fire. As the human race evolved, so did the culture. This is when the
Neolithic Culture was born. People started taking control. Farms sprang up and sedentary villages
began to take form. Amazingly, not too far from these progressing cultures grew civilizations.
When one wants to look at the true heart of a civilization, they must first understand the
civilization's beliefs, moral standards, social interaction, attitudes, values and social consciousness.

The Athenians were superbly educated in the arts and sciences, and trained to be extremely
productive in times of war and peace. When looking at their educational and philosophical output it
is simple to see that the Athenian people valued their futures.
Without educational programs for the Athenian youths, Athena would have lost their civilization
long before it initially peaked. Undoubtedly, Athenian people had a productive social consciousness,
and realized that education and knowledge was quite important. They knew that the future of their
city–state depended on the "smarts" of the people in it. Social awareness was not usually number
one to people back then. Normally, city–states were concerned with war and gaining land. While the
gross majority of Greece were fighting and stealing, Athenians were busily figuring out the
philosophy of life. Clearly, the Athenians were socially aware of what was going on in their lives,
through education and philosophy.
The Spartans on the other hand were more concerned with being brute and strong against their
enemies. A typical Spartan soldier would have to endure unbelievable pain and hardship to become a
respected Spartan and citizen. Their moral standards must have influenced them to exploit their
respect toward physical pain and suffering. Many historians believe Spartans were cunning, lying
cheaters. There were even

Compare And Contrast The Civilizations Of Western...
Cradles of Civilizations lie in the societies that were recognized for being the first of a certain aspect
to Western Civilization that made an impact. The four major ones are Mesopotamia, Egypt, India,
and China. Each of the four has similarities between them, despite being in different locations.
There is also the possibility of more of these civilizations existing besides the four main ones. The
general characteristics of a complex societies or civilization include military and religion. The
cradles of civilization fall perfectly into the definition of complex. Mesopotamia had begun to see
people near the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and they all spread out not too long after. The first sign
of settlement in Egypt was located near the Nile Delta. First settlers were spotted by the Indus River
Valley for India. China began by the yellow river. Soon everyone that one first located dispersed and
grew to be a part of their culture and land at which they were promptly discovered. In comparison,
each of these civilizations first began by a river. From that river they began their new society that

Four Characteristics Of Civilization
What is civilization? A civilization the stage of human social development and organization that is
considered most advanced. A civilization has eight different characteristics. Writing is one of
important in civilization but the most important characteristics are the religions, cities, and the art
and architecture. The first characteristic I going to talk about is Religion is one of the most the
important thing to civilization. A religion can start a civilization because people at have the same
belief can start their our civilization. The religion leader would have a set of rules outlining the
social norm ,religion rules , policies and needs a simple basis of what is expect from them. The
people something worship the gods (polytheism) so that the harvesting can be success and good.
When floods and droughts happen they blame the gods because the gods are angry so they ritual
were the conducted in the temples. A religion can tell you the everyday lifestyle of the people who
lived like their chores , the preparing offering for the gods and sometime they place the offering on
the step of the ziggurat. They expressed their religion by building statues and ziggurats. Each town
had a ziggurat in the center of town. The Ancient Sumerians believed their gods live in the sky so
the gods could hear better and they need to be closer the gods. Ziggurat are huge temple that are

The Five Principles Of Civilization
The five principles of civilization allow you to get a better understanding of history. Not only does it
break down the material for you to learn easier, but it allows you to receive the information for
where you can remember the contents better. Principle one is Geography is Destiny, geography is
what allowed civilizations to settle down, which led to the creation of agriculture, trade, war,
politics, new inventions, etc., while it also helped them get to where we are today by striving to
create a destiny for ourselves. Principle two is Agriculture Creates Civilization, civilization would
die off if they couldn't produce food so agriculture allowed civilizations to grow into cities.
Depending on the geography of where the civilization was located, depended on what they could
grow. So they had to adapt to their surroundings to figure out what they could grow. Principle three,
Clashes of Culture Drive Innovation, shows how civilizations would fight each other for different
resources (land, food, water) which led civilians to new ideas being invented like new weapons and
strategies so they could defeat their enemy. War led to civilizations spreading and teaching their
ways with other civilizations by them seeing their ideas so they had to do better (encouraged new
ideas). Principle four, Trade Is the Lifeblood of Civilizations, trade made it possible for different
cultures/civilizations to trade their goods and ideas. This allowed them to see other religions,
agriculture,

The First Civilizations : The Rise Of Civilization
The first civilizations, the foundations for future empires, were all founded and created between
3500 B.C.E. and 500 B.C.E. by groups of nomadic peoples who decided to settle in an area for
certain group specific reasons. Some of the main states of the first civilization were Mesopotamia,
Norte Chico, Egypt, Indus Valley, China, and Olmec. The second wave civilizations, built between
500 B.C.E. and 500 C.E., included the Persians, the Greeks, Romans, Chinese (Qin and Han), and
India (Mauryan and Gupta). The first wave civilizations were sparked by the agricultural movement

The key similarities between the two waves of civilizations are important and were continued
throughout history even further than the empires of the second wave. These similarities included
slavery, treatment of women, and the patriarch and monarch rulers; these similarities were
intertwined in both waves. Hierarchies of gender declared that women and men were not equal
because "to be gendered as masculine or feminine defines the roles and behavior considered
appropriate for men and women in every human community." The hierarchy of gender led to the
creation of patriarchy, the concept that women are lesser or subordinate to men in all aspects of life.
This idea of patriarchy meant sons were valued more than daughters, men had more opportunities in
society and with jobs, the opportunity to rule, and men were the heads of their households.
However, this wasn't true for every society, even in the first civilizations there were cities and
groups of people living within some states that allowed women to do what they wanted to do out in
society. The Egyptians were a good example of equality as women were legally viewed equal to
men. They were able to own land and slaves, initiate divorce, and rarely they would reach the
position of queen, the most famous being Hatshepsut. On the more extreme side, in ancient
Mesopotamia, patriarchy took root quickly in the form of actual written law. The code of
Hammurabi was created in 1750 B.C.E. creating very submissive laws for

Ancient Civilization Society
Ever since man began to roam this earth some 3–5 million years ago, societies have been evolving
and growing to bring us to the current civilizations that we have today. Although there are some
general differences between the societies such as origin, appearance, and tradition there is far more
argumentation to reinforce how similarly they evolved and developed. To begin, it is indispensable
that we delve into the earliest forms of humanity.
Most if not all groups maintained their survival through a similar nomadic lifestyle of hunting and
gathering. Continuation of early societies also depended on living off of the river. The Tigris and
Euphrates, Nile River, and Indus Valley provided a source to fish as well as fertile land for the
Mesopotamian, Egyptian, and Harappan societies respectively. In India and China, the elders of the
family were looked at as the leaders and decision makers. This continues on through the
development of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Olmec and Persian empires as variations of Kings and
Pharaohs are a precedent of dominance. Religion was a primary part of life in ancient civilizations
as it is today. Although there are differences between monotheistic and polytheistic groups, worship
was crucial to the development of the Maya and Olmec as well as the Hebrews and Israelites. One

  • 2. The Clash Of Civilizations: The Clash Of Civilization I. Introduction As being stated by Samuel P. Huntington, the Clash of Civilization is a hypothesis in which the primary sources of conflicts in the post–cold war era are more dominant to the people's cultural and religious identities. Civilization has three attributes which are the objective elements – language, history religion, customs, and institution; the subjective elements – variable levels of self– identification; and civilization itself is dynamic – they rise and fall, divide and merge. Dialogue between civilizations are also needed and will give significant impacts for not only both civilizations but also for the world. • 3. Conch Civilization When we attempt to change a civilization for our own benefit we can end up destroying ourselves in the process. Just like when a group of boys were stranded on a deserted island. They aimed to create a civilization among themselves. The conch, very important in the novel, was the the first rule formed on the island. The conch was required to be held by the speaker at the littluns meetings. The children affirmed that only one person holding the conch will be allowed to speak at the meeting. "Let him have the conch!" (35). Piggy shouted at the meeting when the boys believed about the beast. "We got to have rules and obey them" (42). The boys set up rules so everyone would be happy on the island, because they are part of their very own civilization. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

City/Cities – A city is a large community of people living close together and a center for trade for a larger place. 2. Permanent records – Writing played a vital role in the earliest civilization. It was first developed by the people of Sumeria. However, writing is not always necessary for civilization. 3. Advanced Technology – It is specialized knowledge to transform the natural environment and human society. 4. Specialized Workers – In early human societies, farming allowed one people to produce food surpluses thus allowing other to focus on other tasks. 5. The most important truth Golding was trying to explain, was that a civilized society such as the boys living on the island can alter greatly to savagery. The boys experience pain, fear, and betrayment while being stranded on the island. Golding discusses the truth of civilization by describing the way the boys live on the island similar to The Giver and The Hunger Games. Civilization Vs Civilization According to the dictionary, underneath the word civilization, it states "an advanced state of human society, in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and the government has been reached." (Dictionary)However, Huntington describes to some degree, something polar opposite, civilization as a meaningful entity. That those nations, and its people, will not only be defined by what modern technology it possesses, but also by their cultural identities and the regions in which they reside within. Patriotism has divided us as a civilization throughout history. One moment, in particular, could relate the two. April 19th, 1995, a day that will be remembered in American History, the day the Oklahoma City Bombing occurred. None other than, Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols carried out this heinous act. The bomb itself subsequently eliminated 168 people and injured another 680 innocent. (Wikipedia) These two individuals believed that they were to be the beginning of the people's revolution, freedom from the government's wrongdoings.Interestingly enough, this display of extremism was commenced on Patriots Day. Also oddly enough, it shares an anniversary with another unforgettable day, the Boston Marathon Bombings. Who is the martyr and who is the patriot? America has occupied the Middle East for a little over 10 years now, forcing our democratic ideology on their civilization. Being a military veteran, I tend to have mixed emotions about this topic. Personally, I feel we both hinder and help aid those in Iraq. After 9/11 I felt a great sense of urgency to protect my values as an American citizen. How Did Civilization Affect The Development Of Civilization Beginning in approximately 3500 BCE through the peak of the PErsian empire in 200's BCE, humans living together created order and structure in natural, human, and built environment systems. The development of writing systems, religious systems, and economic systems led to the growth of civilization and empire. Writing systems affected the growth of civilization because it developed understanding between people. In 3500 BCE, a writing system was created in the Sumerian culture. It was called cuneiform, the sumerians recorded their writing on rocks. The language helped to better trade, laws, and storytelling. Typically, it helped stories stay factual when passed down through generations. Shorty after the language was created, men discovered math. It can be defined as; people who eat the same kind of foods, People who live together, people who speak the same language, and so on. Yet each way that it is defined relates towards the same topic; Humans and their existence on the planet. Civilization is known greatly as a group of humans or animals that live generally together and practice the same habits. Civilization, according to some historians, first came into play in the year 3000 BCE. With of all the new little civilizations popping up, and all the different conditions, and not everyone being able to grow what they need to survive. The people had to resort to trade. Trade helps civilizations grow to be more populated and stronger. Trade also encourages travel, which eventually leads to exploration. And by people exploring they find either more civilizations to trade with, or more land to expand onto. The Mesopotamians are one of the first major civilizations to come into existence. They were able to do this because of the agricultural revolution. The Mesopotamian region was like a "big dust bowl" and much of the time was very hot. Yet there was also times when there was too much water, and the rain flooded all of the peoples crops, and turned the water into swamp like conditions which were unsafe to drink. In order to fix this and make their civilization strive and survive, the people had to make canals, dams and irrigation systems. These things helped the crops grow greatly. Because of the great success of their produce, they were able to trade with other cultures for livestock, and other kinds of food and goods necessary to live and survive. For example, the Anasazi and the Woodland cultures both grew and cultivated their own food, such as corn (Ancient America Lecture, Slide 24 and 29). Another similarity that I found was that the Incas and the Aztecs both worshiped the sun god (Ancient America Lecture, Slide 41 and 48). On the other hand, I noticed a couple differences between the civilizations. For instance, both the Mayans and Aztecs performed human sacrifices regularly, but the Incas did not (Openstax, Chapter 1, section 7 and 13). First Civilizations Influence On Egyptian Civilization #12 Egyptian civilization, like other First Civilizations, did not develop by itself; many different pastoral groups or civilizations influenced Egyptian civilization through trading goods and culture, and helped Egyptians to develop its own unique culture. Being one of the greatest civilizations, Mesopotamia, located between Euphrates and Tigris river, influenced Egypt civilization greatly, as they were close in location. Because they could interact easily with each other, trading flourished, and many goods and cultural insights were exchanged. Here we could talk about the difference between their politics their lifestyles and maybe their economies regional and state. However, both may be different in some form most will identify as American, which will distinguish them from Mexico or Canada. This makes civilizations. Contrasting Ancient Civilizations Most people believe that all ancient civilizations were the same: they all lived with a steadfast loyalty to their one and only king that ruled all of the lands, civilizations only achievements were monumental buildings, and they vacuously attacked neighboring societies to gain more land for millennia. While some of this knowledge is true to an extent, civilizations accomplished an abundance more than some realize. Some fail to register that early civilizations are unique from each other. In contrast, the Mesopotamians viewed the afterlife as a place of horror and fear. The vital cause for the differences of viewpoints in the afterlife is the River they depended on. Both civilizations saw the afterlife as an extension of their current life. With this being said, the Nile was giving and gave them lots of water along with silt, which was crucial for the survival of their crops. In turn, the Egyptians perspective on the afterlife was gracious. Conversely, the Mesopotamians depended on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. While it did bless them with fresh water, on occasions, the river would grow violent and cause a catastrophic amount of damage to their homes and crops. Since they also viewed their afterlife as an extension to their current lives, they saw it as a dark and horrible place that wasn't wanted. However, both civilizations accomplished achievements through religion and for other reasons. The last way Egyptians and Mesopotamian civilizations diverge and converge with each other is because of their accomplishments. They both accomplished mathematics, medicine, architecture of their structures dedicated to their gods, and calendars. Both probably accomplished these specific tasks because each either helped them survive or helped them religious wise. One achievement that was exclusive to the Egyptians was mummification. Whilst both texts discuss the birth and creation of civilization as defined by the western world, the readings vary stylistically as well as in their elaborations of the evolution of society. While their themes of civilization such as religion, and agriculture coincide with one another the approach in their discussion differs. Once such difference can be seen in the introductions of the readings. While ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Egyptian civilization as described in great lengths in the, "Western Heritage" was centered around the Nile River. With the aid of the river, Egyptians were able to develop a complex agricultural system of planting and harvesting, which allowed for a surplus of crops incomparable to the rest of the ancient world. By having an advantageous agricultural system, Egypt was able to place their focus elsewhere, allowing for unified society rather than having individual city states. Under this unified society, religion was the dominant factor, leading to one of the world's first theocracies, as well as some of the western civilization's greatest dynastic rulers. Although Egypt's unified state allowed for it to become one of the most highly developed civilizations of the western world, it also led to its destruction. Due to its highly unified state, Egypt rarely engaged in warfare amongst itself and other civilizations. This led to a fundamentally lacking military skill, which caused their destruction by the ... By looking within our own history one can see the seeds of old destruction sprinkled within our own civilization. Within our own civilization one notices the seeds of the military overspending that crippled the Roman Empire, the deforestation that led to the downfall of the Easter Islands, and overuse of the land that Destroyed Maya, and a divisiveness that obliterated the Sumerian Civilization. By noticing that all of these factors are present in our society today and that all of them are preventable we can attempt to learn from our past and most our civilizations beyond the turning points of those who came before us. Rome was a massive civilization that had thrived for 453 years before it fell, many have heard the tales of barbarians assailing Rome and bringing it to it's knees, however in it's prime Rome could have defended against such threats. However during the fall of Rome, Rome was not at it's prime, years of rampant military overspending, a massive territory that required an inflated military to defend and political corruption had hollowed out the power of Rome as a nation. As a nation of fast expansion Rome had pockets of it's empire rebelling at all times with the Servile wars being an example of the devastation these revolutions could bring. • 18. Early Civilizations : Ancient Civilizations LeAndra Reed Dr. Houck, History 2311 September 18, 2015 Early Civilization All civilizations, whether old or new, strive for advancement. In order to advance, certain techniques and characteristics have to be combined and manipulated to achieve this progression. "A civilization is a complex culture in which large numbers of human beings share a variety of common elements." Examples of these early civilizations that used similar characteristics to flourish were the Sumerians in Mesopotamia and the Egyptians in Egypt. A civilization is formed by several characteristics. The most important being the need for a sufficient group of people. Next would be a central place for these people to congregate. These structures typically would be used for religious purposes as well as a place to delegate how the societies would operate. People in these early civilizations would typically live closer to the central structure. This is turned led to the creation of writing to record and communicate between people of these early societies. In these early civilizations, people relied heavily on their neighbors and would work together to keep prospering. Early examples of these characteristics forming a civilization would be in Mesopotamia and Egypt civilizations. Mesopotamia was an area between "the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Southwest Asia." Mesopotamia received little rainfall yet lands were plentiful and rich. The overflow of the bordering rivers would bring in "fertile silt" to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. The Mysteries Of Early Civilizations Uncovering the mysteries of early civilizations is a task not many scientists have successfully and accurately attempted. Jared Diamond's main focus of his Pulitzer Prize winning book/documentary Guns, Germs, and Steel is the claim that the 3 biggest mysteries of civilization depended mostly on accidental agriculture. This has been met with controversy because Diamond rarely includes other factors such as guns, steel, and actual Eurasian history. But is Guns, Germs, and Steel accurate and entertaining enough to live up to it's hype? Diamond opens up the documentary by saying he spends a considerably long amount of time in New Guinea, learning the culture of the people and studying birds. He meets a man named Yali, who asks "why do white men have so much cargo? (ep. 1)" Diamond focuses most of his research on this statement. However, unlike Yali, he doesn't blame a specific race saying "To me, any explanation based on race is absurd. I know too many really smart New Guineans to believe there's anything genetically inferior about them. (ep. 1)" Instead of pointing an argument directly at a specific people group, Diamond focuses his findings more on geographical location. One of Diamond's arguments pins the uprising of Eurasian civilization and power on agriculture and animals, rather than technology. Diamonds says that pure hunting of animals wasn't enough to sustain a complete civilization. "But the fundamental problem with hunting is that it's never been a productive way ... Throughout the book, the conflict is aimed at the main character Ralph and Jack, who both represented civilized young boys in the beginning of the novel, but quickly developed into savages. Jack was the first of the young boys to experience savagery by trying to overthrow Ralph as chief, and by brutally hunting pigs. While Jack and the hunters were seeking food they came across a sow, "Then Jack found the throat and hot blood spouted over his hands. The more civilized group of the boys is Ralph and Piggy, while they still focus on their main goal of surviving and getting off the island. While the two separate groups argue, Piggy compares the savages to themselves, "Which is better–– to be a pack of painted Indians like you are or to be sensible like Ralph is?" ... "Which is better–– to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?" ... "Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up?" (Golding 180). • 24. Is Civilization the Answer to the Chaos? As Mark Twain once said, "Civilization is the limitless multiplication of unnecessary necessities." The society believes that civilization is the solution to disorder and chaos, but sometimes it creates more problems than solutions. To the imperial Europeans, turning the natives into civilized human beings was the main goal, and that is why they felt as if it was their job to take over the natives' lands. In general, civilization is seen as a solution to a utopian realm. William Shakespeare in The Tempest and Michel de Montaigne in Of Cannibals narrow their focus on the idea of "nature vs. civilization." Both authors discuss the idea of how nature is replaced by civilization and the outcome is not as expected. Shakespeare portrays the idea of Caliban's nature being wiped away by Prospero, who thinks his knowledge is the best weapon he has so he should be the one to control the island. Montaigne, on the other hand, discusses how the natives are better off by sticking to their nature than being civilized because the Western society does not realize that it is barbaric also. William Shakespeare, in The Tempest, writes about Prospero who has the ability to manipulate things by using magic. He and his daughter now live in this island with a slave named Caliban. Textbook definition defines it as: the process by which a society or place reaches an advanced stage of social development and organization, but a civilization is more than just that. It is the culture a group of people possesses which is sustained over a period of time which shapes history in one way or another. Most civilizations all stemmed from one life changing event, the agricultural revolution. As the first agricultural revolution occurred from 10,000 BC to 2000 BC, people started to settle and cultivate land by planting crops and raising animals. Although blossoming from different areas around the world, they all had certain similar aspects such as developing unique ways of supporting themselves and upholding their society. And he believed that these drives direct all human behavior. The id is an unconscious force, with no link to objective reality. It seeks one thing only: the discharge of tension arising from biological drives. The id's exclusive devotion to gratification without regard for logic or reason, reality or morality, is called the pleasure principle. According to Sigmund Freud human beings are essentially biological creatures with strong instincts, one among them is aggression, it as Freud calls: "an original self subsisting instinctual disposition in man . . . the greatest impediment to civilization." At this point the difference between primitive and civilized man arises. Primitive man could satisfy his bodily needs in his id, as it is, whenever and wherever he wanted. They also had trouble controlling war between centers of industry due to the inevitable struggle with the course of the river. For example, "If a seignior has destroyed the eye of a member of the aristocracy, they shall destroy his eye" (32, R). Originally nomadic tribes, people learned to settle down and form civilizations due to the Neolithic Revolution. During this time humans learned how to farm. This major discovery allowed us to create cities where we could rely on our own supplies and labor for food rather than moving around to follow and hunt animals for food. For this plan to work the people had to settle around the most ideal conditions for farming. Thus, most of the successful ancient civilizations were formed around rivers. Ancient Egypt and Ancient India were two of the greatest ancient civilizations and they relied on the rivers they were built around for a surplus of food, trade, and cultural diffusion. Not only does it break down the material for you to learn easier, but it allows you to receive the information for where you can remember the contents better. Principle one is Geography is Destiny, geography is what allowed civilizations to settle down, which led to the creation of agriculture, trade, war, politics, new inventions, etc., while it also helped them get to where we are today by striving to create a destiny for ourselves. Principle two is Agriculture Creates Civilization, civilization would die off if they couldn't produce food so agriculture allowed civilizations to grow into cities. Depending on the geography of where the civilization was located, depended on what they could grow. So they had to adapt to their surroundings to figure out what they could grow. Principle three, Clashes of Culture Drive Innovation, shows how civilizations would fight each other for different resources (land, food, water) which led civilians to new ideas being invented like new weapons and strategies so they could defeat their enemy. • 38. The First Civilizations : The Rise Of Civilization The first civilizations, the foundations for future empires, were all founded and created between 3500 B.C.E. and 500 B.C.E. by groups of nomadic peoples who decided to settle in an area for certain group specific reasons. Some of the main states of the first civilization were Mesopotamia, Norte Chico, Egypt, Indus Valley, China, and Olmec. The key similarities between the two waves of civilizations are important and were continued throughout history even further than the empires of the second wave. These similarities included slavery, treatment of women, and the patriarch and monarch rulers; these similarities were intertwined in both waves. Hierarchies of gender declared that women and men were not equal because "to be gendered as masculine or feminine defines the roles and behavior considered appropriate for men and women in every human community." The hierarchy of gender led to the creation of patriarchy, the concept that women are lesser or subordinate to men in all aspects of life. This idea of patriarchy meant sons were valued more than daughters, men had more opportunities in society and with jobs, the opportunity to rule, and men were the heads of their households. However, this wasn't true for every society, even in the first civilizations there were cities and groups of people living within some states that allowed women to do what they wanted to do out in society. The Egyptians were a good example of equality as women were legally viewed equal to men. They were able to own land and slaves, initiate divorce, and rarely they would reach the position of queen, the most famous being Hatshepsut. On the more extreme side, in ancient Mesopotamia, patriarchy took root quickly in the form of actual written law. The code of Hammurabi was created in 1750 B.C.E. creating very submissive laws for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ancient Civilization Society Ever since man began to roam this earth some 3–5 million years ago, societies have been evolving and growing to bring us to the current civilizations that we have today. Although there are some general differences between the societies such as origin, appearance, and tradition there is far more argumentation to reinforce how similarly they evolved and developed. To begin, it is indispensable that we delve into the earliest forms of humanity. Most if not all groups maintained their survival through a similar nomadic lifestyle of hunting and gathering. Continuation of early societies also depended on living off of the river. The Tigris and Euphrates, Nile River, and Indus Valley provided a source to fish as well as fertile land for the Mesopotamian, Egyptian, and Harappan societies respectively. In India and China, the elders of the family were looked at as the leaders and decision makers. This continues on through the development of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Olmec and Persian empires as variations of Kings and Pharaohs are a precedent of dominance. Religion was a primary part of life in ancient civilizations as it is today. Although there are differences between monotheistic and polytheistic groups, worship was crucial to the development of the Maya and Olmec as well as the Hebrews and Israelites.
