Physical Barriers And The Immune System Defend The Body...
The world is full of bacteria and germs that is a fact. One of the many jobs our body has it to protect us from harmful pathogens which is when our
natural defense mechanisms kick in. Do we know what these natural defense mechanisms are? Our body has an immune system and barriers that play a
part in preventing and/or battling the diseases attacking our body. Is there a difference between the normal functions of the body and the response it
triggers that provokes a defense reaction?
Physical barriers and the Immune system defend the body against organisms that can cause infection (Tunkel, 2015). The first line of defense is the
physical and chemical barriers. Some barriers include the skin, and urine flow. The skin being a primary barrier is

The Characteristics Of Teens : Physical And Body Image
A girl stares at herself in the mirror, skin and bones. She obsesses about her appearance and monitors how much she eats to be accepted by society, but
still feels unworthy. As teenagers develop, their bodies change. Media strongly affects these physical and emotional changes. Girls become uneasy as
they learn that they cannot actually achieve the look that society views as perfect. Since media outlets consist of impractical body standards, adolescent
girls are at a higher risk of undergoing detrimental changes to their body shape and developing a hostile self–image.
Characteristics of Teenagers
Young girls strongly rely on the opinions of others because they are unsure of their appearance. A former participant in the PhD program in
Physiological Psychology at Indiana University claims, there are a number of qualities that distinguish teenagers from any other age group of girls,
including being overly concerned with oneself and the feedback received pertaining to oneself (Elliott 3). Teenagers want to please everyone. They
have an anxious sense of interest with looking perfect and getting positive responses in relation to the way that they look. With more than fifteen years
of experience in emergency medicine, Cynthia Elliott states, young girls are more insecure than adults when getting an unkind response pertaining to
the way that they look (Elliott 3). People constantly add their opinion onto outlets that make adolescents feel like they will never be good enough for

Society 's Unconscious Response Of Health And Illness
Society's unconscious response to health and illness
An important next step will be to re–establish and anchor in trust in ourselves, and there is no better opportunity to test our trust than the fear generated
by social beliefs and the media reports surrounding health and dis–ease.
I would like to share an example of societies belief systems that surround dis–ease with the relevant points of a recent therapy session with a client.
My client who had been diagnosed with a life threatening dis–ease (for the second time) arrived for a Therapy session.
As we began to talk, she had a look of uncertainty on her face, unsure of how to express, in 'sensible' terms, what she had been experiencing and
feeling since her diagnosis'.
"You are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast, earlier that day she had shared her thoughts with a close family member, she expressed her need to 'talk' to her body and 'love' her illness
away. She also shared that she really needed to 'listen' to her inner feelings.
The family member was horrified, "that's it" she said "you've given up", "you have to 'Fight' this thing", "you must 'Fight' it", was her panicked
response.
This reaction did not surprise me in the slightest; it is a reflection of the unbalanced views we have regarding health, illness and our bodies.
Our lives are filled with fear regarding dis–ease. Will I be next? The statistics state me, or someone in my family will defiantly be struck by serious
illness.
The TV adverts appear to be ever increasing, filled with fear of what will happen to your family when you are taken by a dis–ease, children are even
shown saying goodbye to a parent, I have seen a baby used to highlight a dis–ease. These adverts and the frequent messages we are given regarding
dis–ease, is ironically, very unhealthy.
You will notice I am not naming specific dis–eases, the names/words carry a vibration and we don't need the vibration of a dis–ease and the energy it
carries in this book or affecting you as you read. Therefore we can happily leave the names out.
Just remember at all times what DIS–EASE means, dis–ease within the body, it is far less frightening and leaves the door wide open to go from
DIS–ease to EASE.
The stance society takes on

The Effects Of Physical Inactivity On Human Body
Background
Its widely known that physical inactivity has enormous negative health effects. "Poor cardio– respiratory fitness, adiposity, impaired glucose toler–
ance, hypertension, and arteriosclerosis are independent threats to health and that physical inactivity increases the risk for premature death" (Lars). The
negative health effects of physical inactivity are numerous. Examples are high blood pressure, increased risk of diabetes, increased stress and
depression, and shorter life expectancy. It is clear that not being physically active takes a large toll on the human body. There are many different ways
that an individual can turn their life around. Anything from going for a walk or going from a 5 mile run will make a lasting effect. Some people take
exercise to the extreme and use high intensity training.
During intense exercise the body gets pushed to its limits. The cardiovascular system is one that is pushed to its bounds. While at rest the heart is beating
at about 70 beats per minute. During vigorous exercise, the heart rate increases dramatically. The general rule to find the maximum heart rate is taking
206.9 – (0.67 x age) (Waehner). For an average 20–year–old, that is about 194 beats per minute which is over double the heart at rest. The increase in
heart rate is because it is doing everything it can to push blood to the muscles during that time. The muscles demand 50% of the blood flow during
intensive exercise, whereas they only demand 10% while at rest

Mental, Physical And Body Aspects
Human behavior has been analyzed over time, along with conditions that have been put into perspective, about mental, physical and body aspects.
These aspects of a human being are very important for normal functioning of a person in society. When one's mental thought process is affected, proper
reasoning is not possible, and in turn the behavior becomes erratic. One such condition that is directly connected to this mental situation is psychosis.
Apart from affecting the mental condition, it also affects the sensory and cognitive abilities.
Psychosis is defined as a disorder that causes one to have experiences that are out of touch with reality. According to Von (2010), this is not a disease,
but just a clear symptom of a mental illness. Psychotic people have a tendency to have untrue thoughts, or are deluded and they have hallucinations.
Von (2010) goes on to explain that these symptoms are uniquely divided into positive and negative results. Different psychotic disorders are
categorized on the basis of the duration, bizarreness of the delusions and the intensity of mania or depression. Non affective psychosis tends to have
negative symptoms, longer duration and bizarre delusions, while affective psychosis has fewer negative symptoms that are related to bipolar disorder
(Von, 2010).
A mental health professional can only recognize psychosis in a client by observing major changes in their behavior. These changes are such as the
abrupt loss of interest in activities that one

Media 's Influence On Women 's Thin Ideal Essay
This Jesuit value entails, sharing gifts, pursuing justice, and having concern for the poor and marginalized. Working as a community to help those
around you through the good and bad times. Having special concern for those in need. men and women who will live not for themselves, but for the
service to God, to make those that suffer have the support they need in order to get back on their feet.
Media 's Influence on Women 's Thin–Ideal Internalization
Sociocultural factors, or in other words, customs, lifestyles and values that characterize a society or group, play a large part in the way individuals
think of themselves and others. Throughout childhood, children are socialized to understand how to be accepted in society and what it takes in order
to take the status of portraying what the right way to look like is. The act of adapting behavior to the norms of a culture or society is called
socialization. We are shown these norms through magazines, social media websites, and through our peers that have learned these norms from other
various subjects. Exposure to the thin–ideal concept through sociocultural factors, produces body image problems, shame, and depression.
For over ten years, analysts have been looking at the part that introduction to glorified media pictures of female perfection plays in young ladies ' and

Functionalism And Its Impact On Physical Body Essay
In the philosophy of mind, there are many theories that try to resolve the mind–body problem. That is, how does the mental or consciousness interact
with our physical body? Do they interact at all? Are they two separate entities or one in the same? Many theories try to answer these types of
questions, but the one I will be focusing on is role functionalism. When mentioning functionalism throughout, I will be referring to role functionalism.
Functionalism is a theory that says mental states can be defined by their function. So, we can identify mental states with their functional states. We can
come to know the function of a mental state through examining its inputs, outputs, and relation to other mental states. I will show how this theory is
correct by comparing it to the identity theory. I will begin by clarifying a few important terms in relation to functionalism, lay out the theory, and then
present an objection. Lastly, I will present a possible functionalist reply to the objection and conclude. To begin, functionalism is a theory in the
philosophy of mind that defines mental states through its inputs, outputs, and causal relation to other mental states, or its function (Jackson,4). The
inputs are things you perceive in the world and the output is how you react or your behavior. A behaviorist is only concerned with inputs and outputs
when defining mental states, whereas a functionalist takes it a step further. They also examine the casual relationship to other mental

Chemical, Chemical, Physical, And Biological...
Water quality is the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics in a body of water. It describes the condition of the water and the measure of
the biotic species or human needs. If a lot of excessive nutrients enter the water, the water quality will lead to water pollution. Water is contaminated by
contaminants and pesticides which are used to measure the water quality. Drinking water and the health of ecosystems are some things included in the
water quality. Contaminants and pesticides are used to measure the water quality. Dissolved oxygen, the amount of bacteria, and the amount of salt
contained in the water are also ways that water quality is measured. There are risks in measuring the water quality using contaminants and pesticides.
Turbidity is the amount of haziness in the water, this is also a way to measure the water quality. The data of the water quality results are included in
the water quality index which makes the information understandable and useable for the public. The results of the water quality testing depends on the
location, the time tested, and the parameters. Parameters are the variables used while testing characteristics in the water quality. There are different
types of parameters used for differents types of characters like pH is used for testing the chemical characteristics, algae is used for biological
characteristics, and turbidity is used for physical characteristics. Parameters can be used for not only testing above on the surface of

I Sing The Body Electric, By Walt Whitman
I Need You, Body and Soul
The poem I Sing the Body Electric, by Walt Whitman is one of the poems from the original 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass. In I Sing the Body
Electric, Whitman explores the physical body in connection with the soul. In this poem Whitman establishes the links between the body and the soul by
celebrating perfection of the male and female body and the importance the body castes upon the soul and bodies connecting with one another. In this
poem Whitman depicts the image of the perfect body for both male and female by listing specific characteristics that our soul and physical body
connect with to make that body perfect. In I Sing the Body Electric Whitman bridges the gap between our thoughts and our bodies, arguing that they
are both one divine entity. In this writing Whitman argues the two characteristics of this entity that rely on each other to become one and create the
masterpiece. Whitman explains how the beauty of the body is dependent upon the thoughts in our mind and our thoughts are in turn the force that
allows our body to contort beautifully in an outward expression of movement. For example, in section one Whitman questions, "And if the body were
not the soul, what is the soul?" Knowing the answer Whitman continues on to answer the body is the soul, our thoughts, our soul, is the body. In
section six, Whitman explains how "The male is not less the soul nor more".
I agree with Walt Whitman in that the physical body and our thoughts, and soul

Whether Aphrodisiacs Pose A Mental Or Physical Stimulation...
Aphrodisiacs in the Body and Mind
An Aphrodisiac is defined a substance such as foods, drinks, or drugs, that cause or increase sexual desire (Aphrodisiacs, n.d.). This paper will
investigate whether aphrodisiacs pose a mental or physical stimulation on the human body. It has been recorded that in multiple points of history, many
things were considered aphrodisiac, some of these things include potatoes. Aphrodisiacs have Greek origins, deriving from the Greek word
aphryodisiakos meaning sexual gem with aphrodisiac properties, from aphrodisiac heterosexual pleasures form the neuter plural of aphrodisios of
Aphrodite; greek goddess of love and fertility (Aphrodisiacs, n.d.). The first aphrodisiac recorded in human history was body odor, and potions were
sold in ancient Rome. Aphrodisiacs were considered a threat to chastity after the Roman Empire ended, which prompted the church to outlaw several
aphrodisiacs. Western civilizations such as the Incans and Aztecs used aphrodisiacs for reproductive purposes and Asia utilized plants and insects as
aphrodisiacs in order to increase their sexual libido. Aphrodisiacs have shown to be dynamic in culture and practices, and also in the utilization within
diverse groups of people. Aphrodisiacs remain a topic of study for researches today, as they explore how various senses of the body affectsexual arousal
. Asia is believed to be the top consumer of aphrodisiacs, while other countries believe the concept of Aphrodisiacs to be a

In Jack London's "To Build a Fire," the nameless man's pride cost him his life. Throughout the story, the character exhibits many indications that there
is a possibility of his demise. It begins with the character's inability to ground himself to reality, he observed the events happening around him, but he

He also does not pack the necessary equipment to overcome the harsh climate and terrain. In addition, he was a newcomer to the area; it was his first

equipped and would maintain themselves protected by the warmth of a fire. He was arrogant believing he could withstand Mother Nature's force,
without the proper gear.
Finally, he does not listen to his only "companion," a native dog, natural instincts. The dog does not have a superior form of intelligent over the man;
however, even the dog knows it is not safe to travel under those circumstances. The dogs seeks out warmth and shelter, all of which the man takes
away from himself and the dog. If he had bothered to have communication with the dog, the dog would have surely guided his owner toward safety
(pg.137). He also ignores the advice given to him by an old timer on Sulphur Creek. The man warns the nameless man of the punishing temperature of
the country (pg.132). Most importantly, the older timer tells the man to travel with a companion; if anything happens to him his mate could help him
out. However, the man carelessly continues his voyage to meet his buddies. If he had traveled with someone he could have been alive. He later
acknowledges the old man and admits he was wrong (pg.136). The nameless man's lack to grasp reality

Body Of Christ Paper
In the Christian faith the Body of Christ symbolizes both Christ's physical body given for us and the Church as a whole. Christ died giving up His
physical body in order for believers to have eternal life. Because Christ did so the group of people that believe Jesus died for their sin and have a
personal relationship with Christ are referred to as the Body of Christ. By taking many science course, especially physiology, I know how important
each part of the physical body is in order for the whole body to function properly. There is an analogy that can be drawn about how the Body of
Christ as believer is similar the physical body in that it cannot function without all of the parts. Each individual brings a different piece to the Body of

Church was to evangelize through my ability to run whether that be on the team or through putting on 5K races to raise money for Gods people. I
still believe that God has blessed me this the ability to run well to glorify His kingdom. Now as a college student at Wheaton College my part of the
Body seems to be a little different; I no longer stand alone in my faith in my classes, but I also I have fewer chances to speak to non–believers. I feel
currently that I my part of the Body of Christ is to learn and learn well, in order to contribute well in the future but also contribute as a student. This

The Effect Of Body Image On Women 's Self Perceptions And...
Body image is a major concern in women's self–perceptions and feelings about body satisfaction and physical appearance. Individuals are at higher
risk to experience negative body image issues if they hold beliefs and cognitions about their physical appearance, regardless of body mass (Butters &
Cash, 1987). Over weight and appearance related issues often surfaces early in females ' development, and continues throughout their lifespan. The
importance of physical appearance is emphasized and reinforced early in most girls ' development. Often times, body image becomes a problem when
females go through puberty (Striegel–Moore & Franko, 2002). In addition, most girls who express a desire to be thinner are within the normal weight
range for females their age (Striegel–Moore et all). Concerns with the development of disordered eating is of high importance due to the fact that body
dissatisfaction can lead to anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. There has been a increasing number of women who have reported disturbed body
image and engaged in dieting. there has been a significant level of concern about the increasing incidence of eating disorders and this is a major
concern in America (Polivy & Herman, 2002). The media is a form of mass communication that has a great effect on the values, beliefs and actions of

Physical Exercises : A Healthy Body
"A sound mind in a healthy body". This proverb is very old but still it's as significant as it was years ago. No doubt, good health is the true wealth
because physical exercises always keep a person healthy and active. Physical exercises include all that bodily activities that keep a person healthy and
fresh. It is for several purposes including body muscles building, honing athletic skills, maintaining or loosing body weight, and for mere enjoyment.
Regular physical exercise serves as a cure for many diseases like obesity, aggression, heart disease, cardiovascular disease, depression and diabetes.
Physical exercises, majorly Yoga is a must exercise recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to strengthen a body. The University
of Maryland Medical Center has published a report which states that a regular physical exercise strengthens the immune system to develop a strong
resistance for arthritis, asthma, depression, obesity, diabetes, epilepsy and irritable bowel syndrome. A study published in the November 2011 in
"Archives of Internal Medicine" revealed that the people who do regular exercise are less exposed to chronic low back pain than the patients who go
for a medical cure, relying on clinical medicines.
The daily hectic routine doesn't enable a person to take care of his health and ultimately the results are weak muscles, weak bones and increased
weight. It's very difficult to manage time for yourself. Going to a gym would either be costly or burdensome.

(McCall) It is important to be aware of chemical reactions such as this one so a proper workout schedule can be created to allow appropriate
proportions of rest and high intensity exercise. Another chemical that is often misunderstood is testosterone. "Testosterone is responsible for muscle
protein resynthesis and the repair of muscle proteins damaged by exercise, and plays a significant role in helping grow skeletal muscle". (McCall) For
this reason, increased amounts of testosterone in the body can lead to faster recovery times and larger muscles. Many competitive weightlifting
communities have taken advantage of this chemical release. For example, "the Soviet weightlifting team was given testosterone as part of their
training". ("Weightlifting") Another beneficial chemical effect of exercise is the release of serotonin in the body. "Some researchers suspect exercise
alleviates chronic depression by increasing serotonin (the neurotransmitter targeted by antidepressants) or brain–derived neurotrophic factor
(which supports the growth of neurons)". (Weir) It is important to become an educated member of the active exercise community in every way focusing
on the psychical aspect and on the chemical aspect, both equally important.
Taking into account the physical and chemical affects of exercise, it is natural to look at the psychological effects also. Exercise has been proven to
have positive effects on mood. For example, running can have an antidepressant

Physical Therapy: A Career In The Human Body
Do you ever wonder why your body works the way it does? Those thoughts march through my brain daily. I am highly leaning towards pursuing a
major in science. I am amazed at how many different parts our body consists of. Biology is the major that will fulfil my anxious mind of why
people have a bloody nose out of nowhere or how good bacterias in your body work together to protect your from the deadly ones. I have always
wanted to know more about my body. The human body is rather a very complex machine that is required to work 24/7 to keep the world going.
My mother, a complex machine, always has a painful ankle after work. She describes as extremely sore. I figured it's because she had a sprained
ankle in the past and never fully treated it. So I decided to do some research to figure out what needed to happen to her in order for the pain to go
away. With the help of a lot of research, I found specific methods that she had to go through everyday so this wouldn't be an issue later on. Physical
therapy is a great career that interest me when I think about biology. From this career I could help people who are trying to recover from their
injuries. Physics is also something that I would like to learn more about. The first time I sat in a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Physical Exertion Of The Body
In recent years, 'sedentary' has become an increasingly popular term, being used to define a being adopting an inactive lifestyle with potentially
health–suffering consequences. Its use has been predominantly heard by health professionals and the government in the hope to abolish this behaviour
and restore the health (the state of complete mental, physical and social wellbeing, not merely the absence of illness) (WHO, 2003) of members of
society labelled with this tag who are suffering from sedentary–related conditions that potentially require expensive treatment or hospital admission.
The aim is to implement exercise (physical exertion of the body resulting in healthier physical fitness) (Medical News Today, 2014) targeting several
less–active sociological groups through means of initiatives and renovated access to facilities.
Previously, exercise was only referred to at the elite standard. Those that competed in chosen fields of sport were known to undertake regular exercise
to improve the areas of the body that mostly concerned them. Groups of people that fell outside of this small category were not considered physically
active in the same sense, but they were still regarded fit. Several sedentary–related conditions were not as prevalent in these times as they are now, for
example, less people were obese, coronary heart disease was rarer and depression was less common. One statistic stated that the prevalence of obesity in
England has more than doubled in the last

He illiterates this claim by a thought experiment involving torture. In this hypothetical Williams tells individuals that they will be tortured at noon the
following day. Naturally everyone feels uneasy about this. In order to easy this feeling, Williams tells those waiting to be tortured that before noon the
individual's entire memory will be erased. Williams argues that if memory is necessary for personal identity, this news should put any feelings of
uneasiness to rest. When asked, the individual still reports feeling uneasy about the torture. Williams repeats this process altering the scenario from
amnesia to exchanging the memories of the individual who will be torured for those of another. Again when prompted the individual still feels
uneasy about the torture. Williams claims that this is proof of the body being just as necessary as the memories. However, this is not a fair analysis
of the situation. When the individual is told of their torture as a matter of fact, it is a natural reaction to feel uneasy. This is similar to feeling anxious
about a public speaking event that unexpectedly gets canceled right before taking the stage. There will remain a sense of anxiety until the event

The Curse Of Humanity Is The Inescapable Presence Of...
I carry a red sweater, a fair amount of cough drop and gum wrappers, pencil shavings, and 3 calculators, 2 of which I rarely use. If someone were to
weigh the contents of my backpack, there would be significant error in the approximation. The curse of humanity is the inescapable presence of
sentimentality and emotion, things which often latch onto physical objects. So in measuring the things I carry, one would have to take into account the
burdens which cannot be seen by the limited scope of the human eye. The greatest weights I bear are attached to the smallest of articles; a sunscreen
bottle, an albuterol inhaler, and two pills of ibuprofen. I carry the knowledge of my inherent flaws and the insecurities that come from having these
inadequacies through all of my darkest moments, and sometimes even my brightest. To be reminded of the breadth of human flaw is humbling to an
extent. When the things which I carry, like my albuterol and sunscreen bottle, are constant reminders of my own weaknesses, then this humbling idea
becomes a destructive one. The fact that the albuterol inhaler treats an incurable disease is not what makes my burden so heavy. The albuterol inhaler
calls to my mind the idea that I am unable to change the intrinsic parts about my person. While this may seem to be an obvious burden, one which we
must all face, it is nonetheless a burden that can at times inhibit self–confidence. The inhaler reminds me that there are things which asthma prevents

Transcendentalism In La Ley Innata
In La ley Innata, or the Inborn Law by the Spanish rock band, Extremoduro, vocalist Roberto Iniesta takes us on a journey of chaos, the external and
internal aspects of ourselves, and ultimately forms a poetic and musical masterpiece. Many of the songs on the album are difficult to interpret, which,
as a whole, ends up becoming a series of beautiful words that no one understands. However, because of its mysterious nature, we look at it from all
sorts of angles in an attempt to decode as if it were some sort of puzzle. In one of the songs, Iniesta says he is "looking for [his] destiny, living a
deferred life, without being, without hearing, without giving." I personally think that these lines not only resonate with Thoreau's transcendentalism,
and that humans thrive from within, but also helps us look deep into what it means to be human and the kind of struggles that we face because we
often find ourselves clinging to our physicality, rather than our spirituality. Furthermore, the fact that Iniesta is looking for a destiny even though he is
living life "without being" explains that it is his non–physical aspect that is doing the work, not his actual physical body. That being said, Mary Oliver,
in "Humpbacks" helps us determine how and why our non–physical self gives us more answers to the bigger questions we encounter on a day–to–day
basis and why our physicality gets in the way.
As he looks down on society's structure, Thoreau mentions that the things which corrupt humans

Health In Jane Eyre Essay
In the novel Jane Eyre, Mr. Brocklehurst famously says "Naturally! Yes, but we are not to conform to nature"(BrontГ« 78); it echoes the spiritual belief
that the desires of the mortal flesh must be sacrificed to cleanse the soul. The statement has played an important part in 19th century literature and their
focus on the role of the soul and its equation with the physical body. Many writers of the time have brought the concept of nutrition and starvation into
their works; they put the characters through the consequences of being nourished or starved and bring the relationship between physical health and

Throughout the novel, the person who physically serves Jane a plate of food is seen as a character that she (Jane) looks up to. In Gateshead, Bessie
is the one person who sympathises with Jane, sings her songs and tells her stories. Bessie takes on the role of the mother/god like figure to the
neglected child that had not felt acceptance from her blood relations. While food provides comfort to the body and soul, the provider of the food
becomes the mother–like/god–like figure of the situation. Food and those associated with serving food to the physically starved become the 'saviours';
the figures that most religious people aspire to be. Thus, food and the nourishment that it provides is connected to several other religious concepts like
god's grace, spiritual kindness and happiness. This indicates that the nourishment of the body is needed for the enlightenment of the

Personal Identity: John Locke And David Hume
John Locke and David Hume were renowned philosophers of the 17th and 18th centuries that deliberated the thesis of personal identity. Identity
generally is defined by three distinct approaches: identity of mass of matter, living being, and personal identity. The two academicians' agree on
certain characteristics, but are dramatically differing on others. As one evolves over time, are they identified as the same person? Hume and Locke
have written essays on their specific hypotheses about identity. The authors provide the reader with various examples of their theories, including: are
you the same person you were a year ago if you remember, or do not remember, being that person? Are you the same person if you lose a limb or
body part, or even alter one insignificant element of your appearance? John Locke asserts that identity derives from consciousness. He contends that
there cannot be two of the same object or people in the same place at the same time. David Hume's theory presumes that if one minute particle is
distorted, that it does not retain the same identity. In this essay I will consider two positions regarding identity; Hume's theory and Locke's theory.
After analyzing the arguments for and against each, I will argue in favor of Locke's theory. If one were to interchange bodies with someone else;
would you as the reader consider the person to be the same? Lock defines identity as, "when the ideas to which it is attributed don't vary from what

`` The Day They Tied Me Up ``
Sharon Olds was born in San Francisco on November 19, 1942. At age fifteen, she was sent to a boarding school in Massachusetts. Many of her
poems focus on difficult childhood and the body. As Olivia Laing, literary critic of several literary novels and publications, says, "The physical body
is a document of being, physical experience is the primary mode of forming, and physical contact is the primary human relationship." Like Whitman,
Olds celebrates the body in its pleasures and pains. She is a contemporary poet who focuses on autobiographical poems mostly of sexual or violent
nature and personal experience. She particularly resonates with women readers and women's connections with family members and lovers of the past
and present through physical, sexual, and emotional means. She writes frequently about her sadistic, alcoholic father and victimized mother. Her
dysfunctional family plays an enormous role in her poetry, especially in "The Day They Tied Me Up." This poem is inspired by true events and the
feelings and emotions felt by the poet during a memorable aspect of her childhood. When Olds was eight years old, she emptied a bottle of ink onto
her parents' bedspread and was tied to a chair as punishment. In perception by Maurice Merleau–Ponty, a French philosopher commonly associated with
the philosophical movement of existentialism, he demonstrates "'Olds's serial return to the moment of this punishment within the space of the lyric

The Effects Of Exercise On Body 's Physical Condition
Exercise has been proven to have a positive effect on our body's physical condition, but what about our minds? Mental exercise, too, is influential on
our bodies to decrease our stress levels. Though, we know how important it is to do physical exercise and manage stress, yet still 42% of adults say
they are not doing enough to manage their stress mentally (http://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/stress/2014/highlights.aspx ). Research has shown
stress puts detrimental effects to our bodies and well–being. The simple motivation to exercise, especially under stress, can be difficult, but the
ignorance to not exercise, can ultimately cost you your life.
How does stress affect us?
Stress negatively affects our bodies in a variety ways. Stress is a response our bodies have to a stimulant. When you watch a scary movie, the reaction
to the startling moment is an act of stress. Though, stress is a normal bodily response, and Americans expect to have a little stress in their lives,
according to APA (define). Though, too much stress is not good for the human body.
When stress is experienced, a hormone called cortisol is released in the body. Cortisol is a stress hormone that has a great impact on physical and
mental health. Researchers have studied cortisol and found that cortisol is responsible for making our body's cells stay "young" . If stressed, cortisol is
used, therefore stressing the immune system, weakening/aging our cells

Astral Projection Essay
Insidous. Who never watch that movie? If you watch it carefully, you might recognise that the story focuses on one main plot, which is the idea of
people to travel through the spirit realm and see horrible yet amazing things such as the creatures and the environment there. But, how do we know
that the idea to travel through the spirit realm is true and realistic? It was such a heated debate between paranormals when this idea came out. The
truth? You can still reach the spirit world. In addition, you probably need to do some hard practices to learn to enter the spirit realm, but that doesn't
make it impossible. The ritual to do that have been commonly called "Astral Projection" by some people. Astral Projection, a very risky and deadly

wants to attack people around you? I remembered watching a TV show titled "Masih Di Dunia Lain" about people being possessed by haunting
spirits, that the spirit scratched and kicked the TV show host, causing the host to be badly injured. Can you also imagine, if the spirit posses your

Dietary And Physical Activity Is Essential Parts Of The...
Dietary and physical Activity The way we treat our bodies is an essential part of the human body when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. We
used our bodies countless every day in many different forms. Eating and exercising are essential parts of the human life. But the real questions
are, what foods should we eat to help our bodies to work the best? how much physical activity is needed it?. A site released back in 2011 by the
first lady Michelle Obama to remain the community to build healthier choices. In this site, we are able to find different tools including a Super
Tracker which "can help to plan, analyzed and track diet and physical activity". My file includes my name Johana Fernandez, 108 pounds, 5.2 feet,

The Birth of Human Ethics and Death of the Physical Body...
The Birth of Human Ethics and Death of The Physical Body
Living our life is about being happy, but often we misunderstand the meaning of happiness. In understanding the nature of living well and happiness
philosophical systems, such as Confucianism and Epicureanism, can play important roles to explain the notion of happiness. Confucianism embraces
ethical principles and behaviors in making one's life organized within a collective society to attain happiness. On the other hand, Epicureanism
expresses the ideas behind death that often becomes the barrier to our happiness. Epicureans also suggest possible mechanisms in understanding the
truth of death that help people gain happiness in life. Both systems coincide in excluding the negative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The passion of the heart is necessary as much as the physical presence of the descendants. Along with respecting the ancestors, people should also show
responsibility and care in respecting their living parents. Confucius proposes that the behavior conducted toward one's parents must be gentle. The
master said:
In serving your parents you may gently remonstrate with them. However, once it becomes apparent that they have not taken your criticism to heart you
should be respectful and not oppose them, and follow their lead diligently without resentment. (109)
Therefore, Confucius is suggesting that people can oppose their parents gently. However, parents' denial of their child's proposition must also be
accepted respectfully by the child. Such rigid construction of responsibilities is comprehensible because Confucianism merged in a collective society
where the cooperation among people was strongly valued to maintain well–beings of each other.
The righteousness and ethical values that Confucius suggests are defined by the quality that makes someone outstanding and fills their heart with
goodness. The goodness is obtained through the virtue ethics–elements of behaving well. Confucius said:
Zai Wo was sleeping during the daytime. The master said, "Rotten wood cannot be carved, and a wall of dung cannot be plastered. As for Zai Wo,
what would be the use of reprimanding him? The master added, "At first when evaluating people, I would listen to their

The Physical Effects Of Smoking On The Body
It can be seen that the effects of smoking on your body can be very drastic, for example smoke in tobacco contains many dangerous chemicals such as
Tar; Carbon monoxide; Hydrogen cyanide; Oxidizing chemicals; Metals and finally radioactive compounds known to be carcinogenic.
The physical effects on the respiratory system, meaning that the system of organs in the body take control for the input of oxygen and the exhalation of
smoking, this consist of irritation of the trachea (windpipe) and larynx (voice box), a reduced lung function and breathlessness due to swelling of the
lungs, an impairment of the lungs' clearance system which results to lung irritation and damage, an elevated risk of lung infections and permanent
damage to the air sacs of the lungs.
Moreover, the damage of the respiratory system can progress and effect the circulatory system. For example, there will be a raised blood pressure and
heart rate which will exceedingly tighten the blood vessels in the skin eventually leading to the drop in skin temperature. As less oxygen is carried by
the blood, the blood would be more prone to clotting.
Emotionally, smoking can damage your immune system by causing infections such as pneumonia and influenza and more severely a longer–lasting
illness which can decrease the levels of protective antioxidants (such as vitamin c). When your body takes in nicotine, emotions swing in the opposite
way when the drug is removed causing a nicotine withdrawal. Smokers under nicotine

Body Modification And Human Physical Appearance

shunned from society forever. In corporate America, it is considered taboo and will not earn respect or a job. In rural America, you are perceived as
unclean and destroying the perfect body God gave you. But, in urban America on the streets of Brooklyn, the person is unique and exciting. Body
modification or the deliberate altering of the human anatomy or human physical appearance (Dictonary.com) can be achieved in many ways. Some of

status in the act of stretching their neck with brass rings. The origins of this tradition is said to be due to "rendering the women incapable of farming
or heavy labor" (Jefkin–Elnekave) which in turn protects the women from being kidnapped by slave traders which is very common in this part of
Asia. So, in essence this form of modification actually protects these women. This implies that modification as a whole is used in most cultures as a
form of invisibility. People in these cultures ultimately, assume the characteristics associated the modification and strive to live up to the ideals the
modification stands for.
Furthermore, the Bume of Ethiopia use body scarification as a form of personal achievement earned after a hunt or kill. These scares are given in a
complex ritual. This modification is a rite of passage into adulthood for many African tribes. The scarring emulates the manliness of the wearer. The

Competitive Sports For The Physical Body And The Human Body
The rising controversy in sports and physical activity has sparked many parents and adults to question the significance of sports. They have forgotten
the value and benefits of competitive sports. Although, "The popularity of youth sports continues to rise, with an estimated 45 million child and
adolescent participants in the US. Seventy–five percent of US families with school–aged children have at least one child who participates in organized
sports." A question then arises as to what are the effects competitive sports has on the human body. Through thorough research it has been found that
involvement in any competitive sport or weekly exercise will affect a person's health in positive manner, contrary to what media outlets and
disgruntled parents state. Competitive sports have many benefits for the physical body and the mental mind. Mentally those who participate in
sports or a form of exercise are seen to have no depression or anxiety. This reduced depression and anxiety can be a means of feeling better if they
can not afford or lack access to traditional treatment, like medicine or counseling. The physical activity will promote self esteem in the form a
positive perception and self worth. Being able to see a healthy body will empower oneself as opposed to seeing an unhealthy body. The problem
solving required to participate in athletics can also enable someone to calm themselves down and create new strategies to deal with issues. The
practice in sports will transfer to everyday occurrences and be increasingly useful in future tense scenarios. The healthier mind will work in
conjunction with the body that is benefiting as well. The body will be more stable in weight because of the constant burning of calories during weekly
exercise which keeps body fat to a reduced level. The activity will also improve the functioning of the cardiovascular system which lowers the strain on
the heart. The heart is not the only muscle that gets stronger from exercise. The musculoskeletal system as a whole will develop more and become
much stronger. The added use of these muscle can even improve hand–eye coordination. Working out will improve the quality of sleep, which in turn,
will improve energy levels. In concurrence, the

Physical Activity and Body Weight vs Diabetes and...
Cardiovascular Disease Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most common and well known afflictions in modern society. It kills and
hospitalizes many people every year. CVD is actually a rather broad category of affliction. It encompasses any disease or condition that affects the
heart. These conditions have effects that range from mild to surgical repair and even to death in extreme cases. The causes of CVD are fairly well
known. It is directly linked to both physical activity (and the obesity that it prevents) and body mass index (BMI) in the research that we have
studied. The BMI is a measure of the proportion of the body that is made up of fat. The higher a person's BMI number is, the more body fat they have.
The combination of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the tests performed in this study gauged the effects of body mass index (BMI) and physical activity on cardiovascular disease (CVD) very
well, there is, of course, some information that might be questioned. First of all, many of the experiments that were carried out involved
self–administered questionnaires. Since the subjects that were tested reported on their own physical activity there is a possibility of error, especially
since every individual has his/her own ideas of how to measure physical activity. In addition, one of the studies tested only women who were already
experiencing chest pain. Although that study suggested that exercise reduced chances of CVD more than BMI, these results could not be extended to
men or asymptomatic individuals. Also, there was not a significant follow–up period after the experiments, so the long–term effects cannot be deduced.
Lastly, one must consider that there are several other mechanisms that can contribute to CVD, such as diet and family history. These factors were not
taken into account in this research. Diabetes Diabetes is a disorder of the metabolism centered mostly around carbohydrate metabolism. A diagnostic
precursor is high glucose blood sugar. Diabetes has three forms or types. The first involves autoimmune destruction of the insulin (a polypeptide
hormone that regulates carbohydrate metabolism) producing cells. The second type

NO Spiritual Reward for Depriving the Physical Body
There is NO Spiritual Reward for Depriving the Physical Body of Comfort or Pleasure
I. Doctrine
There is a great falsehood that is perpetuated by the modern church, and it is one that threatens the very mission assigned to every believer in Matthew
28:18–20. Before one can address this falsehood, one must understand the duty of God's people in this life. It is the believer's task to go and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them as God ordained, and teaching them how to obey the teachings of Jesus. What then are the teachings of Jesus?
As believers, we hold as doctrine that God the Father, along with the Holy Spirit and the Son created all that is. He gave Man, God's special creation
made in His own image, dominion over the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This heresy is the idea that there is a spiritual reward for depriving the physical body of comfort or pleasure. The Catholics who endured the outbreaks
of bubonic plague in the Middle Ages sometimes resorted to self–flagellation, a practice of whipping or beating one's self in order to gain favor with
God (and presumably avoid plague). Catholics have long practiced similar traditions, with some devout Catholics praying on particularly
uncomfortable prayer mats or refusing red meat on certain days. Some Catholic clergy go so far as to wear burlap undergarments, so as to "suffer
with Christ" and perhaps gain favor with God. This heretical doctrine declares the atonement by Christ to be an incomplete one, and contradicts His
final words, the confirmation that "It is finished" (John 19:30b).
The particular incarnation of this heresy that pervades even the "evangelical" churches of today comes to light in those churches' condemnation of
various things, including drugs and alcohol. Now, as described above, all things created by God in the beginning were good. The use of the earth's
resources was given to Man, and with it responsibility. The scriptures indicate that alcohol can be a deceiver. Immoderate use of alcohol leads to
drunkenness, which the scriptures indeed condemn (Galatians 5:19–21). However, alcohol was never forbidden to the Hebrews, and Jesus himself
made it at the wedding in Cana (John 2). It seems clear that the alcohol itself is not what the scriptures

I've never done this before but always wished for. I am investing a healthy figure of $50,000. Good money requires good planning. First of all I
would need a perfect location, a location which is easily accessible by the people and is fairly large. A friend of mine is a real estate agent, he had
promised me to help. A business need planning, I have no business background but my brother–in–law has a good experience in this field. I would
really appreciate his help. My gym would definitely need publicity. I 've already contacted few ad companies and flyers will be distributed around the
city in the following month. To make it even more popular I'm planning to invite Mr. Dwayne Johnson, a popular celebrity on the inauguration day
which is yet to be decided. Then comes the equipment's. I 'll equip my gym with the best quality machines. Hammer strength and Sole fitness are my
priority for now. My meeting with these company dealers is scheduled for the next week. My order is of 800 machines. Other than this padded floor

Representation Of The Body Is A Physical Tool
Module 2 Essay
Our bodies represent something and, in the case of our society, bodies can speak for people as well. A person is judged and policed according to
what they do to themselves, the way in which they present themselves to society, and by the things they associate themselves with. Bodywork allows a
person to consciously tailor their body to their specific desires and needs. The body is a physical tool, but also a means of communicating. Thus, this
essay will outline how female participation in bodywork, specifically in regards to roller derby, can be both empowering and disempowering at the
same time depending on which aspects a person chooses to emphasize and their perspective used to analyze it.

After the first lap, each opposing pack member a jammer skates by translates into one point (Cohen & Barbee, n.p.). Roller derby offers women an
opportunity to use bodywork to present a feminine exterior, in opposition to society, as well as re–produce hegemonic feminine and masculine
customs. The women are encouraged to build more toned and muscular bodies but the also incorporates hyper femininity, in which the derby girls
choose their attire.
Generally, female participation is categorized as empowering or disempowering according to the hegemonic ideals and stereotypes, which are instituted
and policed by society but rarely questioned. The ideal female body is supposed to be constructed to appear as being small, thin, frail, and beautiful by
removing hair, controlling weight, exercising, utilizing makeup, and wearing the appropriate feminine attire (StrГјbel & Petrie, 2016). In other words,
the ideal female body being policed by society is not created to be powerful or athletic, but rather an object to be gazed upon by the outside eye.
However, many females construct and utilize their bodies in a way that is more than just an object of appeal, they use them in an athletic way typically
associated with masculinity. The type of female athletics and the female body represented in roller derby skaters combat the hegemonic societal female
norms. These two physical activities require female athletes to demonstrate huge feats of strength, aggression, and power, which is

The Physical Image : Social Media And Body Image
Throughout the years, the definition of beauty constantly changes. In our society today many children are told to be true to themselves, to be unique,
to be who they are, etc.; But on the other hand social media and the celebrities on there are a constant reminder that there is a certain type of beautiful.
The juxtaposition between being yourself and being what is "beautiful" has consistent grey areas and blurred lines making it almost impossible to keep
up with what's "beautiful". The media, whether intentional or not, portrays this certain body image that you have to be in order to qualify as beautiful.
What is body image? From Sophia Greene's 'Body Image: Perceptions, Interpretations, and Attitudes', body image is "the mental picture we have in
our minds of the size, shape, and form of our bodies and out feeling concerning these characteristics and one's body parts." So, let break this down a
bit. It all comes down to the mental picture we have of ourselves? But when the media is constantly throwing images out there of what "beauty" is, is
it just our mental picture of ourselves that determines our body image? Is it all the other physical pictures around us shaping what we should look
like? Out subconscious sees everything around us and is a part of determining that feeling concerning the characteristics of our body. From the time

Physical Body And Genitali The Biological Perspective
Compare and Contrast Essay
Biological Perspective: The biological perspective posits the idea that one's biological makeup is responsible for determining one's gender. The idea is
that a physical body and genitalia is what mandates the person's gender. Some researchers have suggested that on top of this biological determinism,
genes pass on gender stereotypes like an increased ability for math in people biologically assigned male and maternal instincts in people assigned
female at birth. Others have suggested that evolution has cemented men and women's roles in society because it always was that way. A simplistic
explanation of chromosomes states that those with Y chromosomes are male and those without are female but as we know, it's... Show more content on

In general, once these intersex individuals are identified, corrective surgery is suggested to reassign the child within the traditional gender binary so
that their gender identity will match expectations. Some scientists have suggested that gender identity is permeable within the first 18 months so that
the intersexuality of their bodies can be addressed, while others suggest that identity is fluid throughout childhood until puberty, when the body
changes caused will cement their gender identity. The process of acquiring a gender identity is simple within this framework. Because it is solely
focused on biology, the identity is assigned based on which side of the gender binary it is closest to and that is all the nuance available. Later
perspectives take this and define it as the biological sex, which they then separate from gender. However, this process is similar throughout all the
perspectives for people who are cisgender, because they have no need for the further nuance that other perspectives can provide.
Psychological Perspective
Freud believed that gender identity was built from our interactions and learned from our environment, but was informed by our biological makeup. His
theory of gender identity development is constructed in stages as the child grows older, first the oral stage, then the anal stage, then the critical stage in
which the child's gender identity is constructed called the genital stage. The genital stage requires

Physical Development Of The Physical Brain And Body
Hereditary and environmental aspects are interconnected in the developmental of the physical brain and body (Berk & Meyers 2016, p.171).
Physical development in early childhood is; awareness of space, body and movement (Rogers & Wright 2015, p. 24), development of motor
capabilities and physical growth (Berk &Meyers 2016, p. 5). From birth to two years, children are experiencing physical change; size and weight,
brain development and refinement of motor skills (Berk & Meyers 2016, p. 5). The environment, social and genetic aspects all have an influence on
the physical development of children (Tatiana et al. 2017, p. 1).

As the size of the head is much greater than the rest of the body, the brain developments in a very quick pace (Berk & Meyers 2016, p. 161). A
majority of brain growth occurs rapidly in the early years of an infant's life and is a crucial period in brain development (Fallik 2016, p. 7). During the
first two years, children are forming neurons that store and communicate information and synapses (Berk & Meyers 2016, p.162).
Nature refers to inborn factors influencing physical development stated in Estourgie–van Burk 2006 (cited in Berk & Meyers 2016, p. 171). Genes are
in chromosomes that contain a genetic code, which makes humans who we are (Berk & Meyers 2016, p.51). Chromosomal abnormalities also
influence physical growth, such as children with Down syndrome have slower motor abilities (Berk & Meyers 2016, p. 59) therefore having a
significant impact on physical development. From birth, almost all children can learn to crawl, walk and grasp items (Berk & Meyers 2016, fig.
5.2). Berk and Meyers (2016, p. 171) considers the rate and growth of body size; height and weight are largely influenced by genetics as long as there
are no significant negative impacts on the child.
Jean–Jacques Rousseau's ideas on child development were: children have a natural course of growth (Berk & Meyers 2016, p. 13). Arnold Gesell
modified Rousseau's ideas which led to the development of the maturational model of development (Berk & Meyers 2016, p. 13), where he believed that

Physical Barriers And The Immune System Defend The Body...

  • 1. Physical Barriers And The Immune System Defend The Body... The world is full of bacteria and germs that is a fact. One of the many jobs our body has it to protect us from harmful pathogens which is when our natural defense mechanisms kick in. Do we know what these natural defense mechanisms are? Our body has an immune system and barriers that play a part in preventing and/or battling the diseases attacking our body. Is there a difference between the normal functions of the body and the response it triggers that provokes a defense reaction? Physical barriers and the Immune system defend the body against organisms that can cause infection (Tunkel, 2015). The first line of defense is the physical and chemical barriers. Some barriers include the skin, and urine flow. The skin being a primary barrier is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Characteristics Of Teens : Physical And Body Image A girl stares at herself in the mirror, skin and bones. She obsesses about her appearance and monitors how much she eats to be accepted by society, but still feels unworthy. As teenagers develop, their bodies change. Media strongly affects these physical and emotional changes. Girls become uneasy as they learn that they cannot actually achieve the look that society views as perfect. Since media outlets consist of impractical body standards, adolescent girls are at a higher risk of undergoing detrimental changes to their body shape and developing a hostile self–image. Characteristics of Teenagers Young girls strongly rely on the opinions of others because they are unsure of their appearance. A former participant in the PhD program in Physiological Psychology at Indiana University claims, there are a number of qualities that distinguish teenagers from any other age group of girls, including being overly concerned with oneself and the feedback received pertaining to oneself (Elliott 3). Teenagers want to please everyone. They have an anxious sense of interest with looking perfect and getting positive responses in relation to the way that they look. With more than fifteen years of experience in emergency medicine, Cynthia Elliott states, young girls are more insecure than adults when getting an unkind response pertaining to the way that they look (Elliott 3). People constantly add their opinion onto outlets that make adolescents feel like they will never be good enough for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Society 's Unconscious Response Of Health And Illness Society's unconscious response to health and illness An important next step will be to re–establish and anchor in trust in ourselves, and there is no better opportunity to test our trust than the fear generated by social beliefs and the media reports surrounding health and dis–ease. I would like to share an example of societies belief systems that surround dis–ease with the relevant points of a recent therapy session with a client. My client who had been diagnosed with a life threatening dis–ease (for the second time) arrived for a Therapy session. As we began to talk, she had a look of uncertainty on her face, unsure of how to express, in 'sensible' terms, what she had been experiencing and feeling since her diagnosis'. "You are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast, earlier that day she had shared her thoughts with a close family member, she expressed her need to 'talk' to her body and 'love' her illness away. She also shared that she really needed to 'listen' to her inner feelings. The family member was horrified, "that's it" she said "you've given up", "you have to 'Fight' this thing", "you must 'Fight' it", was her panicked response. This reaction did not surprise me in the slightest; it is a reflection of the unbalanced views we have regarding health, illness and our bodies. Our lives are filled with fear regarding dis–ease. Will I be next? The statistics state me, or someone in my family will defiantly be struck by serious illness. The TV adverts appear to be ever increasing, filled with fear of what will happen to your family when you are taken by a dis–ease, children are even shown saying goodbye to a parent, I have seen a baby used to highlight a dis–ease. These adverts and the frequent messages we are given regarding dis–ease, is ironically, very unhealthy.
  • 4. You will notice I am not naming specific dis–eases, the names/words carry a vibration and we don't need the vibration of a dis–ease and the energy it carries in this book or affecting you as you read. Therefore we can happily leave the names out. Just remember at all times what DIS–EASE means, dis–ease within the body, it is far less frightening and leaves the door wide open to go from DIS–ease to EASE. The stance society takes on ... • 5. The Effects Of Physical Inactivity On Human Body Background Its widely known that physical inactivity has enormous negative health effects. "Poor cardio– respiratory fitness, adiposity, impaired glucose toler– ance, hypertension, and arteriosclerosis are independent threats to health and that physical inactivity increases the risk for premature death" (Lars). The negative health effects of physical inactivity are numerous. Examples are high blood pressure, increased risk of diabetes, increased stress and depression, and shorter life expectancy. It is clear that not being physically active takes a large toll on the human body. There are many different ways that an individual can turn their life around. Anything from going for a walk or going from a 5 mile run will make a lasting effect. Some people take exercise to the extreme and use high intensity training. During intense exercise the body gets pushed to its limits. The cardiovascular system is one that is pushed to its bounds. While at rest the heart is beating at about 70 beats per minute. During vigorous exercise, the heart rate increases dramatically. The general rule to find the maximum heart rate is taking 206.9 – (0.67 x age) (Waehner). For an average 20–year–old, that is about 194 beats per minute which is over double the heart at rest. The increase in heart rate is because it is doing everything it can to push blood to the muscles during that time. The muscles demand 50% of the blood flow during intensive exercise, whereas they only demand 10% while at rest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Mental, Physical And Body Aspects Human behavior has been analyzed over time, along with conditions that have been put into perspective, about mental, physical and body aspects. These aspects of a human being are very important for normal functioning of a person in society. When one's mental thought process is affected, proper reasoning is not possible, and in turn the behavior becomes erratic. One such condition that is directly connected to this mental situation is psychosis. Apart from affecting the mental condition, it also affects the sensory and cognitive abilities. Psychosis is defined as a disorder that causes one to have experiences that are out of touch with reality. According to Von (2010), this is not a disease, but just a clear symptom of a mental illness. Psychotic people have a tendency to have untrue thoughts, or are deluded and they have hallucinations. Von (2010) goes on to explain that these symptoms are uniquely divided into positive and negative results. Different psychotic disorders are categorized on the basis of the duration, bizarreness of the delusions and the intensity of mania or depression. Non affective psychosis tends to have negative symptoms, longer duration and bizarre delusions, while affective psychosis has fewer negative symptoms that are related to bipolar disorder (Von, 2010). A mental health professional can only recognize psychosis in a client by observing major changes in their behavior. These changes are such as the abrupt loss of interest in activities that one ... • 7. Media 's Influence On Women 's Thin Ideal Essay This Jesuit value entails, sharing gifts, pursuing justice, and having concern for the poor and marginalized. Working as a community to help those around you through the good and bad times. Having special concern for those in need. men and women who will live not for themselves, but for the service to God, to make those that suffer have the support they need in order to get back on their feet. Media 's Influence on Women 's Thin–Ideal Internalization Sociocultural factors, or in other words, customs, lifestyles and values that characterize a society or group, play a large part in the way individuals think of themselves and others. Throughout childhood, children are socialized to understand how to be accepted in society and what it takes in order to take the status of portraying what the right way to look like is. The act of adapting behavior to the norms of a culture or society is called socialization. We are shown these norms through magazines, social media websites, and through our peers that have learned these norms from other various subjects. Exposure to the thin–ideal concept through sociocultural factors, produces body image problems, shame, and depression. For over ten years, analysts have been looking at the part that introduction to glorified media pictures of female perfection plays in young ladies ' and ladies ' frequently antagonistic association with their own bodies. • 8. Functionalism And Its Impact On Physical Body Essay In the philosophy of mind, there are many theories that try to resolve the mind–body problem. That is, how does the mental or consciousness interact with our physical body? Do they interact at all? Are they two separate entities or one in the same? Many theories try to answer these types of questions, but the one I will be focusing on is role functionalism. When mentioning functionalism throughout, I will be referring to role functionalism. Functionalism is a theory that says mental states can be defined by their function. So, we can identify mental states with their functional states. We can come to know the function of a mental state through examining its inputs, outputs, and relation to other mental states. I will show how this theory is correct by comparing it to the identity theory. I will begin by clarifying a few important terms in relation to functionalism, lay out the theory, and then present an objection. Lastly, I will present a possible functionalist reply to the objection and conclude. To begin, functionalism is a theory in the philosophy of mind that defines mental states through its inputs, outputs, and causal relation to other mental states, or its function (Jackson,4). The inputs are things you perceive in the world and the output is how you react or your behavior. A behaviorist is only concerned with inputs and outputs when defining mental states, whereas a functionalist takes it a step further. They also examine the casual relationship to other mental ... • 9. Chemical, Chemical, Physical, And Biological... Water quality is the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics in a body of water. It describes the condition of the water and the measure of the biotic species or human needs. If a lot of excessive nutrients enter the water, the water quality will lead to water pollution. Water is contaminated by contaminants and pesticides which are used to measure the water quality. Drinking water and the health of ecosystems are some things included in the water quality. Contaminants and pesticides are used to measure the water quality. Dissolved oxygen, the amount of bacteria, and the amount of salt contained in the water are also ways that water quality is measured. There are risks in measuring the water quality using contaminants and pesticides. Turbidity is the amount of haziness in the water, this is also a way to measure the water quality. The data of the water quality results are included in the water quality index which makes the information understandable and useable for the public. The results of the water quality testing depends on the location, the time tested, and the parameters. Parameters are the variables used while testing characteristics in the water quality. There are different types of parameters used for differents types of characters like pH is used for testing the chemical characteristics, algae is used for biological characteristics, and turbidity is used for physical characteristics. Parameters can be used for not only testing above on the surface of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. I Sing The Body Electric, By Walt Whitman I Need You, Body and Soul The poem I Sing the Body Electric, by Walt Whitman is one of the poems from the original 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass. In I Sing the Body Electric, Whitman explores the physical body in connection with the soul. In this poem Whitman establishes the links between the body and the soul by celebrating perfection of the male and female body and the importance the body castes upon the soul and bodies connecting with one another. In this poem Whitman depicts the image of the perfect body for both male and female by listing specific characteristics that our soul and physical body connect with to make that body perfect. In I Sing the Body Electric Whitman bridges the gap between our thoughts and our bodies, arguing that they are both one divine entity. In this writing Whitman argues the two characteristics of this entity that rely on each other to become one and create the masterpiece. Whitman explains how the beauty of the body is dependent upon the thoughts in our mind and our thoughts are in turn the force that allows our body to contort beautifully in an outward expression of movement. For example, in section one Whitman questions, "And if the body were not the soul, what is the soul?" Knowing the answer Whitman continues on to answer the body is the soul, our thoughts, our soul, is the body. In section six, Whitman explains how "The male is not less the soul nor more". I agree with Walt Whitman in that the physical body and our thoughts, and soul ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Whether Aphrodisiacs Pose A Mental Or Physical Stimulation... Aphrodisiacs in the Body and Mind An Aphrodisiac is defined a substance such as foods, drinks, or drugs, that cause or increase sexual desire (Aphrodisiacs, n.d.). This paper will investigate whether aphrodisiacs pose a mental or physical stimulation on the human body. It has been recorded that in multiple points of history, many things were considered aphrodisiac, some of these things include potatoes. Aphrodisiacs have Greek origins, deriving from the Greek word aphryodisiakos meaning sexual gem with aphrodisiac properties, from aphrodisiac heterosexual pleasures form the neuter plural of aphrodisios of Aphrodite; greek goddess of love and fertility (Aphrodisiacs, n.d.). The first aphrodisiac recorded in human history was body odor, and potions were sold in ancient Rome. Aphrodisiacs were considered a threat to chastity after the Roman Empire ended, which prompted the church to outlaw several aphrodisiacs. Western civilizations such as the Incans and Aztecs used aphrodisiacs for reproductive purposes and Asia utilized plants and insects as aphrodisiacs in order to increase their sexual libido. Aphrodisiacs have shown to be dynamic in culture and practices, and also in the utilization within diverse groups of people. Aphrodisiacs remain a topic of study for researches today, as they explore how various senses of the body affectsexual arousal . The man warns the nameless man of the punishing temperature of the country (pg.132). Most importantly, the older timer tells the man to travel with a companion; if anything happens to him his mate could help him out. Christ died giving up His physical body in order for believers to have eternal life. Because Christ did so the group of people that believe Jesus died for their sin and have a personal relationship with Christ are referred to as the Body of Christ. By taking many science course, especially physiology, I know how important each part of the physical body is in order for the whole body to function properly. There is an analogy that can be drawn about how the Body of Christ as believer is similar the physical body in that it cannot function without all of the parts. In high school I felt that my part of the Church was to evangelize through my ability to run whether that be on the team or through putting on 5K races to raise money for Gods people. I still believe that God has blessed me this the ability to run well to glorify His kingdom. Now as a college student at Wheaton College my part of the Body seems to be a little different; I no longer stand alone in my faith in my classes, but I also I have fewer chances to speak to non–believers. I feel currently that I my part of the Body of Christ is to learn and learn well, in order to contribute well in the future but also contribute as a student. This maybe through an internship, research, lab or simply class my current function is glorify God in all that I do. My top strengths include: empathy, responsibility, consistency, harmony, and developer; I found this out with the strengths finder test. Another chemical that is often misunderstood is testosterone. "Testosterone is responsible for muscle protein resynthesis and the repair of muscle proteins damaged by exercise, and plays a significant role in helping grow skeletal muscle". (McCall) For this reason, increased amounts of testosterone in the body can lead to faster recovery times and larger muscles. Many competitive weightlifting communities have taken advantage of this chemical release. For example, "the Soviet weightlifting team was given testosterone as part of their training". • 17. Physical Therapy: A Career In The Human Body Do you ever wonder why your body works the way it does? Those thoughts march through my brain daily. I am highly leaning towards pursuing a major in science. I am amazed at how many different parts our body consists of. Biology is the major that will fulfil my anxious mind of why people have a bloody nose out of nowhere or how good bacterias in your body work together to protect your from the deadly ones. I have always wanted to know more about my body. The human body is rather a very complex machine that is required to work 24/7 to keep the world going. My mother, a complex machine, always has a painful ankle after work. She describes as extremely sore. I figured it's because she had a sprained ankle in the past and never fully treated it. So I decided to do some research to figure out what needed to happen to her in order for the pain to go away. With the help of a lot of research, I found specific methods that she had to go through everyday so this wouldn't be an issue later on. • 18. Physical Exertion Of The Body In recent years, 'sedentary' has become an increasingly popular term, being used to define a being adopting an inactive lifestyle with potentially health–suffering consequences. Its use has been predominantly heard by health professionals and the government in the hope to abolish this behaviour and restore the health (the state of complete mental, physical and social wellbeing, not merely the absence of illness) (WHO, 2003) of members of society labelled with this tag who are suffering from sedentary–related conditions that potentially require expensive treatment or hospital admission. The aim is to implement exercise (physical exertion of the body resulting in healthier physical fitness) (Medical News Today, 2014) targeting several less–active sociological groups through means of initiatives and renovated access to facilities. Previously, exercise was only referred to at the elite standard. Those that competed in chosen fields of sport were known to undertake regular exercise to improve the areas of the body that mostly concerned them. Groups of people that fell outside of this small category were not considered physically active in the same sense, but they were still regarded fit. Several sedentary–related conditions were not as prevalent in these times as they are now, for example, less people were obese, coronary heart disease was rarer and depression was less common. Williams argues that if memory is necessary for personal identity, this news should put any feelings of uneasiness to rest. When asked, the individual still reports feeling uneasy about the torture. Williams repeats this process altering the scenario from amnesia to exchanging the memories of the individual who will be torured for those of another. Again when prompted the individual still feels uneasy about the torture. Williams claims that this is proof of the body being just as necessary as the memories. However, this is not a fair analysis of the situation. When the individual is told of their torture as a matter of fact, it is a natural reaction to feel uneasy. This is similar to feeling anxious about a public speaking event that unexpectedly gets canceled right before taking the stage. If someone were to weigh the contents of my backpack, there would be significant error in the approximation. The curse of humanity is the inescapable presence of sentimentality and emotion, things which often latch onto physical objects. So in measuring the things I carry, one would have to take into account the burdens which cannot be seen by the limited scope of the human eye. The greatest weights I bear are attached to the smallest of articles; a sunscreen bottle, an albuterol inhaler, and two pills of ibuprofen. I carry the knowledge of my inherent flaws and the insecurities that come from having these inadequacies through all of my darkest moments, and sometimes even my brightest. To be reminded of the breadth of human flaw is humbling to an extent. When the things which I carry, like my albuterol and sunscreen bottle, are constant reminders of my own weaknesses, then this humbling idea becomes a destructive one. The fact that the albuterol inhaler treats an incurable disease is not what makes my burden so heavy. The albuterol inhaler calls to my mind the idea that I am unable to change the intrinsic parts about my person. • 22. Transcendentalism In La Ley Innata In La ley Innata, or the Inborn Law by the Spanish rock band, Extremoduro, vocalist Roberto Iniesta takes us on a journey of chaos, the external and internal aspects of ourselves, and ultimately forms a poetic and musical masterpiece. Many of the songs on the album are difficult to interpret, which, as a whole, ends up becoming a series of beautiful words that no one understands. However, because of its mysterious nature, we look at it from all sorts of angles in an attempt to decode as if it were some sort of puzzle. In one of the songs, Iniesta says he is "looking for [his] destiny, living a deferred life, without being, without hearing, without giving." I personally think that these lines not only resonate with Thoreau's transcendentalism, and that humans thrive from within, but also helps us look deep into what it means to be human and the kind of struggles that we face because we often find ourselves clinging to our physicality, rather than our spirituality. Furthermore, the fact that Iniesta is looking for a destiny even though he is living life "without being" explains that it is his non–physical aspect that is doing the work, not his actual physical body. That being said, Mary Oliver, in "Humpbacks" helps us determine how and why our non–physical self gives us more answers to the bigger questions we encounter on a day–to–day basis and why our physicality gets in the way. As he looks down on society's structure, Thoreau mentions that the things which corrupt humans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The statement has played an important part in 19th century literature and their focus on the role of the soul and its equation with the physical body. Many writers of the time have brought the concept of nutrition and starvation into their works; they put the characters through the consequences of being nourished or starved and bring the relationship between physical health and spirituality into question. In face, the direct references to food and being fed has an important role in 19th century literature. • 24. Personal Identity: John Locke And David Hume John Locke and David Hume were renowned philosophers of the 17th and 18th centuries that deliberated the thesis of personal identity. Identity generally is defined by three distinct approaches: identity of mass of matter, living being, and personal identity. The two academicians' agree on certain characteristics, but are dramatically differing on others. As one evolves over time, are they identified as the same person? Hume and Locke have written essays on their specific hypotheses about identity. The authors provide the reader with various examples of their theories, including: are you the same person you were a year ago if you remember, or do not remember, being that person? Are you the same person if you lose a limb or body part, or even alter one insignificant element of your appearance? John Locke asserts that identity derives from consciousness. He contends that there cannot be two of the same object or people in the same place at the same time. David Hume's theory presumes that if one minute particle is distorted, that it does not retain the same identity. In this essay I will consider two positions regarding identity; Hume's theory and Locke's theory. After analyzing the arguments for and against each, I will argue in favor of Locke's theory. Like Whitman, Olds celebrates the body in its pleasures and pains. She is a contemporary poet who focuses on autobiographical poems mostly of sexual or violent nature and personal experience. She particularly resonates with women readers and women's connections with family members and lovers of the past and present through physical, sexual, and emotional means. She writes frequently about her sadistic, alcoholic father and victimized mother. Her dysfunctional family plays an enormous role in her poetry, especially in "The Day They Tied Me Up." The physical effects on the respiratory system, meaning that the system of organs in the body take control for the input of oxygen and the exhalation of smoking, this consist of irritation of the trachea (windpipe) and larynx (voice box), a reduced lung function and breathlessness due to swelling of the lungs, an impairment of the lungs' clearance system which results to lung irritation and damage, an elevated risk of lung infections and permanent damage to the air sacs of the lungs. It is directly linked to both physical activity (and the obesity that it prevents) and body mass index (BMI) in the research that we have studied. Since the subjects that were tested reported on their own physical activity there is a possibility of error, especially since every individual has his/her own ideas of how to measure physical activity. In addition, one of the studies tested only women who were already experiencing chest pain. Although that study suggested that exercise reduced chances of CVD more than BMI, these results could not be extended to men or asymptomatic individuals. Also, there was not a significant follow–up period after the experiments, so the long–term effects cannot be deduced. Lastly, one must consider that there are several other mechanisms that can contribute to CVD, such as diet and family history. These factors were not taken into account in this research. As believers, we hold as doctrine that God the Father, along with the Holy Spirit and the Son created all that is. He gave Man, God's special creation made in His own image, dominion over the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This heresy is the idea that there is a spiritual reward for depriving the physical body of comfort or pleasure. The Catholics who endured the outbreaks of bubonic plague in the Middle Ages sometimes resorted to self–flagellation, a practice of whipping or beating one's self in order to gain favor with God (and presumably avoid plague). Catholics have long practiced similar traditions, with some devout Catholics praying on particularly uncomfortable prayer mats or refusing red meat on certain days. Some Catholic clergy go so far as to wear burlap undergarments, so as to "suffer with Christ" and perhaps gain favor with God. This heretical doctrine declares the atonement by Christ to be an incomplete one, and contradicts His final words, the confirmation that "It is finished" (John 19:30b). The particular incarnation of this heresy that pervades even the "evangelical" churches of today comes to light in those churches' condemnation of various things, including drugs and alcohol. Now, as described above, all things created by God in the beginning were good. The use of the earth's resources was given to Man, and with it responsibility. The scriptures indicate that alcohol can be a deceiver. Immoderate use of alcohol leads to drunkenness, which the scriptures indeed condemn (Galatians 5:19–21). However, alcohol was never forbidden to the Hebrews, and Jesus himself made it at the wedding in Cana (John 2). It seems clear that the alcohol itself is not what the scriptures ... • 36. Representation Of The Body Is A Physical Tool Module 2 Essay Our bodies represent something and, in the case of our society, bodies can speak for people as well. A person is judged and policed according to what they do to themselves, the way in which they present themselves to society, and by the things they associate themselves with. Bodywork allows a person to consciously tailor their body to their specific desires and needs. The body is a physical tool, but also a means of communicating. Thus, this essay will outline how female participation in bodywork, specifically in regards to roller derby, can be both empowering and disempowering at the same time depending on which aspects a person chooses to emphasize and their perspective used to analyze it. Roller derby offers women an opportunity to use bodywork to present a feminine exterior, in opposition to society, as well as re–produce hegemonic feminine and masculine customs. The women are encouraged to build more toned and muscular bodies but the also incorporates hyper femininity, in which the derby girls choose their attire. Generally, female participation is categorized as empowering or disempowering according to the hegemonic ideals and stereotypes, which are instituted and policed by society but rarely questioned. The ideal female body is supposed to be constructed to appear as being small, thin, frail, and beautiful by removing hair, controlling weight, exercising, utilizing makeup, and wearing the appropriate feminine attire (StrГјbel & Petrie, 2016). In other words, the ideal female body being policed by society is not created to be powerful or athletic, but rather an object to be gazed upon by the outside eye. However, many females construct and utilize their bodies in a way that is more than just an object of appeal, they use them in an athletic way typically associated with masculinity. The type of female athletics and the female body represented in roller derby skaters combat the hegemonic societal female norms. These two physical activities require female athletes to demonstrate huge feats of strength, aggression, and power, which is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The men in these advertisements look nothing like me, despite me being tall, it is still not enough. The media has put into my perception that slender, though muscular, bodies are more successful in romance, career and are self–confidence. These assumptions that the media has portrayed in my mind has left me questioning myself about my own physical body. I quite remember looking at the mirror and seeing that I had belly fat and my arms looked like a shrimp's compared to the ideal men. I felt incompetent and worthless because the ideology that was put into my mind and my assumption that without the ideal body my career and romance life would come to an end. So I decided I needed to change, so I signed up for the gym to bulk up. This was no accident that I retreated to the gym, supposedly the media idea of achieving the ideal body is realized by working out, dieting, and cosmetic surgery. Pressure was also put on me by women, friends, other men and my parents, especially my father. Through advice like "Be a Man", something that is easily said, but carried the weight of its message. I was expected to take charge. So I did by taking control of my body with exercise and drinking protein shakes and cutting down my food intake to meet the standards of society. This provided me with a sense of direction, control and achievement; however, it risked my health with symptoms of having eating disorders. Similarly, I have seen many men and women, mostly women, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Physical Image : Social Media And Body Image Throughout the years, the definition of beauty constantly changes. In our society today many children are told to be true to themselves, to be unique, to be who they are, etc.; But on the other hand social media and the celebrities on there are a constant reminder that there is a certain type of beautiful. The juxtaposition between being yourself and being what is "beautiful" has consistent grey areas and blurred lines making it almost impossible to keep up with what's "beautiful". The media, whether intentional or not, portrays this certain body image that you have to be in order to qualify as beautiful. What is body image? From Sophia Greene's 'Body Image: Perceptions, Interpretations, and Attitudes', body image is "the mental picture we have in our minds of the size, shape, and form of our bodies and out feeling concerning these characteristics and one's body parts." So, let break this down a bit. It all comes down to the mental picture we have of ourselves? But when the media is constantly throwing images out there of what "beauty" is, is it just our mental picture of ourselves that determines our body image? Is it all the other physical pictures around us shaping what we should look like? Out subconscious sees everything around us and is a part of determining that feeling concerning the characteristics of our body. From the time you wake up to the time you go back to sleep, the media is always surrounding you. Whether it's your phone, your television, your magazines, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Physical Body And Genitali The Biological Perspective Compare and Contrast Essay Biological Perspective: The biological perspective posits the idea that one's biological makeup is responsible for determining one's gender. The idea is that a physical body and genitalia is what mandates the person's gender. Some researchers have suggested that on top of this biological determinism, genes pass on gender stereotypes like an increased ability for math in people biologically assigned male and maternal instincts in people assigned female at birth. Others have suggested that evolution has cemented men and women's roles in society because it always was that way. A simplistic explanation of chromosomes states that those with Y chromosomes are male and those without are female but as we know, it's... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In general, once these intersex individuals are identified, corrective surgery is suggested to reassign the child within the traditional gender binary so that their gender identity will match expectations. Some scientists have suggested that gender identity is permeable within the first 18 months so that the intersexuality of their bodies can be addressed, while others suggest that identity is fluid throughout childhood until puberty, when the body changes caused will cement their gender identity. The process of acquiring a gender identity is simple within this framework. Because it is solely focused on biology, the identity is assigned based on which side of the gender binary it is closest to and that is all the nuance available. Later perspectives take this and define it as the biological sex, which they then separate from gender. However, this process is similar throughout all the perspectives for people who are cisgender, because they have no need for the further nuance that other perspectives can provide. Psychological Perspective Freud believed that gender identity was built from our interactions and learned from our environment, but was informed by our biological makeup. His theory of gender identity development is constructed in stages as the child grows older, first the oral stage, then the anal stage, then the critical stage in which the child's gender identity is constructed called the genital stage. The genital stage requires ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Physical Development Of The Physical Brain And Body Hereditary and environmental aspects are interconnected in the developmental of the physical brain and body (Berk & Meyers 2016, p.171). Physical development in early childhood is; awareness of space, body and movement (Rogers & Wright 2015, p. 24), development of motor capabilities and physical growth (Berk &Meyers 2016, p. 5). From birth to two years, children are experiencing physical change; size and weight, brain development and refinement of motor skills (Berk & Meyers 2016, p. 5). The environment, social and genetic aspects all have an influence on the physical development of children (Tatiana et al. 2017, p. 1). As the size of the head is much greater than the rest of the body, the brain developments in a very quick pace (Berk & Meyers 2016, p. 161). A majority of brain growth occurs rapidly in the early years of an infant's life and is a crucial period in brain development (Fallik 2016, p. 7). During the first two years, children are forming neurons that store and communicate information and synapses (Berk & Meyers 2016, p.162). Nature refers to inborn factors influencing physical development stated in Estourgie–van Burk 2006 (cited in Berk & Meyers 2016, p. 171). Genes are in chromosomes that contain a genetic code, which makes humans who we are (Berk & Meyers 2016, p.51). Chromosomal abnormalities also influence physical growth, such as children with Down syndrome have slower motor abilities (Berk & Meyers 2016, p. 59) therefore having a significant impact on physical development. From birth, almost all children can learn to crawl, walk and grasp items (Berk & Meyers 2016, fig. 5.2). Berk and Meyers (2016, p. 171) considers the rate and growth of body size; height and weight are largely influenced by genetics as long as there are no significant negative impacts on the child. Jean–Jacques Rousseau's ideas on child development were: children have a natural course of growth (Berk & Meyers 2016, p. 13). Arnold Gesell modified Rousseau's ideas which led to the development of the maturational model of development (Berk & Meyers 2016, p. 13), where he believed that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
