Humanity Is The Duty Of Humanity
Humanity has not learned yet Humanity cannot be defined in two simple terms. Two words are not enough to completely encompass everyone and
everything, but that is exactly what humans do. It is the duty of humanity to learn and grow which is why mankind must formulate more concise and
clear definitions of good and evil. It is flabbergasting that the human species has not been intelligent enough to learn this lesson yet. Continuing, the
current definition of evil is too relative to be the same for every human being. Consider the question, do humans have the right to do whatever they can
to survive? Secondly, look at Thomas Hobbes' point of view on the social contract and finally reflect on William Golding's Lord of the flies for a unique
perspective on human nature in extraneous situations. Humanity in the past has wiped out species, demolished forests, and dumped an ocean's worth
of CO2in the atmosphere. The average person would see these examples as abominable, however, we did not at the time and they are still heavily
debated topics. If mankind cannot decide exactly what is acceptable, then why do humans try to? Humanity should author a system in which it defines
things as acceptable or not while taking into account the relativity. One cannot endeavor to define all of humanity or what they currently consider
commencible, as a part of the duty to themselves, they must respect each other's opinions in all situations. To conclude, when defining human nature it

Thomas Jefferson: John Locke And The Declaration Of Freedom
In a such a fast–paced world, the humanities are the much needed breath of fresh air that allows everything to slow down for a moment. Some use
this time to reflect on past experiences and question what they believe and how things are done. But the most important aspect of the humanities is,
arguably, its ability to present the past in a simplistic view so that society may learn from its mistakes in order to cultivate a better future. In an
attempt to do so, it is imperative that this country is able to get back in touch with its roots. More specifically, John Locke. Though they may not know
it, the people already have the tools needed to make a more perfect nation. It is through the study of the humanities that these tools can finally be put to
use. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In doing so, Jefferson connected with the works of John Locke and extrapolated the best of his viewpoints and applied them within the Declaration of
Independence. Notably, George Thomas argues that "Locke has been a significant influence on how Americans understand public life and that
Lockeanism may be the dominant strand of thought in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution" (464). Even in today's society, Locke is still
a prominent figure. In fact, on June 26th, 2015, the Supreme Court looked towards some of Locke's contributions within the Constitution and declared
same–sex marriage legal nationwide on the basis of "all men are created equal". Thomas sheds some light on the thought process behind this ruling

The Humanities And Its Impact On Education Essay
Martha Nussbaum argues that primary, secondary, and especially, higher education institutions are cutting the humanities from curricula. According to
Nussbaum, our nation and those like it are economically hungry and are pushing technical careers instead. She disputes that a decrease in the
humanities will cause a loss in free thinking, and therefore a loss of democracy. Her argument is based off of her theory that without thehumanities,
citizens become soulless, mechanical, and profit–making machines. This theory is based off the notion that the humanities are continuing to be cut
from curricula at an extensive rate. But are the humanities truly decreasing? Nussbaum is accurate in saying that fewer people are majoring in the
humanities; however, she drastically exaggerates the rate in which they are decreasing. In fact, the rate in which the humanities have been declining has
levelled out over the past few decades. So, it would seem that democracy is safe, for the most part. What are the humanities? The EncyclopУ•dia
Britannica says: "Those branches of knowledge that concern themselves with human beings and their culture or with analytic and critical methods of
inquiry derived from an appreciation of human values and of the unique ability of the human spirit to express itself" (EncylopУ•dia Britannica). The
humanities look at the humankind as a whole to understand various cultures, ideals, and values. This concept can be looked at throughout history,

Australian Curriculum: Summary And Analysis
Humanities and Social Sciences involves students undertaking the process of inquiry learning in order to acquire the desired skills and understandings
that are embedded within the Australian Curriculum. Reynolds (2014 p3) suggests that Humanities and Social Science learners need to be
'self–directed, flexible, have complex thinking skills and be reflective of their learning'– these skills are solidly linked to the inquiry process and the
Australian Curriculum and is why inquiry learning in the Humanities classroom is so important. (Reynolds, 2014)
Inquiry Learning is when students construct on their learning by drawing on their pre–existing knowledge and combining it with new information to
form their understanding. (Reynolds, 2014) Inquiry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The concept of Constructivism underpins many features observed in inquiry learning. (Reynolds, 2014) A Constructivists approach maintains that

Constructivism theory affirms that people create their own knowledge by drawing on their past knowledge and combining it with new ideas to create
their own learning. The teacher's role is to thoughtfully sequenced and facilitate the knowledge that is appropriate for the student's current level of

Mcclay: A Controversial Article On The Humanities
A common belief today is that the humanities have lost their place in modern America. After a controversial article on the humanities, written by
Stanley Fish, was published by The New York Times, many of the online readers had disagreeing or negative comments proving that some Americans
still long for the humanities. What Fish could not accept, and what most of the readers believed in, was that the humanities have a specific purpose and
task. McClay discusses the burdens of the humanities, but also the things that they are able to do for us. The two main burdens mentioned are the
humanities as preceptor, and the humanities as task. McClay goes on to explain some ways in which that the humanities can be reborn in America's
society and also

Positive And Negative Effects Of Dictatorships
I have always found the human need for power and domination interesting, which is why I choose it for the Research Project. I am interested about
how the Dictatorial style of government affects the overall growth of the humanities globally. My goal for this project is to research and understand the
positive and negative effects of dictatorships on the academic growth as well as growth in the humanities. There are clear negative effects like the loss of
literature in countries such as Germany, where specific types of book from certain eras were burned. In addition to that there are positives such as
leaders focusing on education more than other areas of government spending. The paper that would be written using the information gathered through
research on this topic would be persuasive, arguing that though there are some positive effects, dictatorships have an overall negative impact on
intellect and the humanities.
My working research question is: Are the net effects of dictatorships on the areas of the humanities including art and literature as well as academics
as a whole positive or negative? My corresponding thesis statement is: On the grounds of global loss of art and literature as well as suffering
academics, dictatorships have a negative effect on the country they govern as well as the world as a whole. I will research historical occurrences of
dictatorships globally. In addition to that I will research the effects on academics in specific countries. I will also

Humanities Faire Analysis
The Humanities Faire was both an amazing and stressful challenge this year, which started in September and ended in October. The ending was a
showcase, but there was a long road before that to get to where it ended. On the first day, we did a really rough overview of the time periods we
wanted to include, the characters, and what the main view to get across was. On September 1st, that is what we looked at. Breaking into small
groups, we got some ideas rolling and brought them to the big group. After about a week of conversing and little researching, we came to one
conclusion as to what we wanted to get across: God can and will use different groups of people for his plans. Now that the 'theme' was found, we
moved on to narrowing our times and people. For... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Looking at them, we narrowed down the groups of civilizations. Afterwards we each chose a group to be in, and then we met with them. I
personally was in the Persian group. As we met with our groups, we conversed and decided what we personally would want to present and also the
characters that would be needed. Once each of us got characters, we researched them and brought our information to the group to them down. Along
with the evaluated information, we wrote a script and designed costumes and set design. As the showcase drew closer, we tried to perfect as much
as we could and practiced our lines a lot. Within the final two weeks, the sets were going up and being painted. Games were being created and lines
were still being practiced. Our costumes were being found, and this all led up to the dress rehearsal. During this day, we each ran through the whole
faire, and as the other groups were running through their parts, we either watched or finished our sets. This was a successful practice, with a few things
that needed improving, such as studying lines or performance techniques. Then, it was the big day– the

The Humanities Mary Ann Witt Analysis
In Mary Ann Witt's work, "The Humanities", she states how our world views culture and how cultures are expressed and embraced. Within the
first paragraph she asks, "Is there indeed a 'core' of great works and cultural information that all educated people should be familiar with?". This
question is looking at whether it is essential for well educated people to be aware and interested in every piece of a country's heritage and the way
they live or if you should only know that if you are truly curious and intrigued by that country and the belief systems they are raised on. Most people
would agree that it is important for everyone to be aware of the world around them. That means knowing that some people stop any task they may be in
the middle of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Young minds soak up culture just like they seek out to expand their vocabulary and understand the world around them. As described by Witt, a
child's mind is like "a field that must be tilled, fertilized, planted, and cultivated by parents, teachers, and other influential members of the society in
which the child lives". Children watch every single thing that happens around them and analyzes it deeply. But, as we age, we appear to lose this
ability to automatically pay acute attention to a situation, try and look at it from every way, and use everything we have learned about the world in
the past in order to figure out how and why this is occurring. Adults get annoyed when children, at the age of normally about 3, will begin to
constantly ask why about everything. But really, this should be cherished because we start to not care enough to want to grasp every detail of life
once we grow into being teenagers and then adults. So, by continuously exposing children to culture as they mature, we would be encouraging them to
stretch out this wonder for as long as possible. A mind that has been surrounded by the same culture everyday of their life, "acquires certain habits,
values, beliefs, and ways of thinking". People, when only exposed to the same culture for years, will run out of things to find excitement and curiosity
in that leads to the apparent decrease in the analytical aspect of life. Humans are curious creatures. But, we need to

In This Paper, I Plan To Argue The Ideas By Edward Conard,
In this paper, I plan to argue the ideas by Edward Conard, in his argument that we don't need more humanities major in our academic system. In
specific, this paper will explore the writer's claims, the gaps in his arguments and counter–arguments in this topic. My argument is important because I
will challenge Conard's article with the self–fashioning's article by Keohane.
In Conard's article, he demonstrates to answer the question whether or not we need more humanities. His answer is that we should be focus on
technology and innovation to have a better living standards. (41) His main argument is that innovation and technology are the key to driver of the
American economy and there is a need for more talents and expertise in this area. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(43) Schools give one the time and materials to achieve all what one desire in life. (43) In the same way, I would challenge the students to leverage
their energy and time to become the best they can be in their life. (43)
This paper also supports the self–fashioning article by Keohane. Self–fashioning builds the character, personality, and focus on the student. A
self–fashioned student is more likely to succeed in life in whichever line of specialization he chooses. Likewise, I disagree with Conard on the point
that innovation and technology are more likely to bring success to the student. From experience, people who know their personality and character are
able to use in their skills, time and education to be the best in whichever field, whether in technology and innovation or humanities. In my view,
success and failure are not a factor of chosen line of specialization rather, it is a factor of hard work and determination to create a change.
Self–fashioning is more fundamental and basic education, like authority, and intelligence and it is determined by how people deal with small and basic
things in life. Things like cleaning, washing, and taking care of oneself are more important that education when it comes to self–fashioning.
In my life, the most common basic things derive from self–fashioning. They include taking care of oneself through right

Humanities has shaped the world we live in today by giving us an understanding of others through principles, histories and languages. It allows us to
reflect on the past so we can prepare for the future. From Early Renaissance art to the present, the arts and ideas of people are inspirations of
expectation, reality and attraction seen in the world today. Humanities teach us nothing except the significance of life. Humanities encourages us to
think creatively and reason and question the world we live in. It is a visual way to learn about other languages and cultures that we are not familiar

The Difference Between The Art Of Picasso And Braque
Modernist Assault:
1. We know that experts had trouble being able to tell the difference between the works of Picasso and Braque. Defend whether or not this made each
artist's work any less original.
It does not make their art any less original. Originality is about creativity and innovation. While their work was similar, it was the only of it's kind at
the time. They pioneered the path of cubism side by side. I would not consider this to be unoriginal, but a tandem effort to make their own art. Surely,
they challenged one another which pushed their art to new heights. I don't think cubism would be what it is today without both artists, as they were at
the forefront of creating new art during that period.
2. Filippo Tommaso Marinetticlaimed that the motor car was more beautiful than the marble statue of the winged Nike. Develop an explanation that
agrees or disagrees with Marinetti.
I can understand Marinetti's claim that the motor car was more beautiful than the marble statue of the winged Nike. However, I don't agree with his
claim. The motor car is an ingenious creation that required great minds to create, but the question is about beauty. Marble statues bent to the will of
man are truly beautiful to me. The statue of Nike is one of my favorites. The way the clothing flows as you can see the tension on the skin makes it far
more beautiful to me than a car. Finally, there is something about taking one block of marble, and making it into what they envisioned. Apposed to

The Importance Of The Humanities Faire
The Humanities Faire, which varies year to year, is a very valued outread of Jesse Remington High School. The 2018 Humanities Faire will be
Colonial America. Going into the Faire, it is important to know all of the aspects and have an overview of what the Faire is going to focus on.
Colonial America is often viewed as just the 13 original English colonies, but often people leave out the fact that there were already French, Spanish,
Dutch, and other groups of people in America. That is an important factor to America, along with Great Britain and what happened there to cause
people to voyage over to America. Another them that must covered is the religious groups and strifes between those. To accomplish all of this, strong
and willing leaders are needed.
The way the leaders have been set up in the past two fairs have worked really well. Having two seniors or a senior with a junior has made each group
and the overall goal succeed. Keeping the senior as a group leader is wise because they have the most Faire experience and knowledge. Having that
second senior or junior is great help for more guidance and helps make the Faire become more of a success and supported. The way they should be
paired is by looking at the strengths and weaknesses of each senior/junior and deciding who would work best together to make the project a great
achievement.
In order to be a leader, people should know what it takes to be a leader. This means they should be the students that have

Causes Of Crimes Against Humanity Essay
We know crimes against humanity as a deliberate criminal act or acts that are typically part of a systematic campaign which causes human suffering or
death on a large scale. The acts are an attack on human dignity where the crimes can be committed during times of war and peace. Offences that come
under this category include murder, extermination, enslavement, deportation or forcible transfer of a population, imprisonment or other severe
deprivation of physical liberty, torture, sexual violence, persecution against any identifiable group or collective, enforced disappearance of persons and
other inhumane acts of a similar character and gravity1,2,3.

crimes such as rape, sexual slavery, enforced prostitution, forced pregnancy, enforced sterilization, or any other form of sexual violence of comparable

The Bosnian War of 1992–1995 was a major conflict that was seen to be politically and racially motivated between the Serbian's, Croatian's and
Bosnian's. During this time the Serbian's were participating in an illegal conflict by being in violation of the Geneva conventions, customary laws, as
well as committing odious offences that we know as crimes against humanity4.

Disadvantages Of Humanities
I appreciate Mr. Coles essay, but as someone who's went to college once and basically starting over due to the lack of finding a career or job in my
field per say. Personally I think going deeper into the humanities should be optional. Based on my brief tenure in the professional workforce, I didn't
need to know about The Ancient Mayan Civilization or have a need for calculus to be successful in my job. At the same time with everything going on
in the world today, I think the humanities may benefit some of the people who are freaking out behind the history of this country they live in. If
anything I'd wish there would've been advanced home economics classes. I come from a single parent home, as well as the first in my family to
graduate college. My mother didn't know much about a budget, 401k, Roth IRA or preparing for the future in general. When I graduated college
and moved out on my own, there was so many shocks I encountered living in the real world. I learned from my mistakes and ignorance and now
know what to teach my future children what not to do. In college my mom told me to get a credit card to pay for my books, I had no idea I had to
pay that money back monthly. I let that debt sit almost three years, when I went to purchase a nicer car that wasn't cash, I learned about credit and
how terrible mine was. Later on I would come to realize making that purchase without a career would have me in over my head. Sometimes to this

The Beginning Of The Humanities Sequence
Since the beginning of the Humanities sequence, numerous themes have been expressed through various pieces of art and literature. A few of these
themes have been so prevalent that they have flourished throughout the entire sequence of humanities classes. One of the major themes in particular is
the idea of truth and where people have found truth in society. Some believe that truth comes from religion and higher powers, while others believe that
knowing as many angles of a certain idea gains knowledge and achieves truth. Over history, truth has developed from an absolute truth to a scientific
and existential truth. During the pre–modern world sequence, it was apparent that truth was validated by the use of religion and top members of
society. This was shown through the work Hymn to the Aten. Egyptian people followed the Aten since he gave them a sense of purpose. At the time
in history, religion was a major focus point in society and their lives. That pharaoh that is depicted in the picture was seen as the shining spirit of
Aten. The pharaoh gained his knowledge through God which he then passed to his people. The Egyptians agreed on the fact that Aten provided truth
since it was directly to the pharaoh through God. However, the weakness in this was that everyone believed the pharaoh to be true, which allowed
the pharaoh to have absolute power over his people. A second piece of work during this time period was the work created by Plato called Allegory of
the Cave. In this

My research is about the importance of teaching humanities and arts to kids. Humanities and art can provide understanding to children opening their
minds and after my research, I can say I am in favor that children learn in early ages humanities and art. In this paper, I will provide both examples
why kids should study them and why not. I will explain how do humanities and art help them to develop their intelligence and how could not be so
beneficially for them as well. Even though some people say that art classes are a drain on the economy and art educations are considered a distraction
and that art classes do not give children more development in their grades, my research will talk about the importance of teaching humanities and arts to
kids.
I will show first the good part of teaching at and humanities to kids:
Premise 1: Humanities class gives kids sense about where they come from.
Premise 2: Humanities helps kid to develop skills they need to grow up.
Premise 3: Art relaxes your mind.
Premise 4: Art helps kids to express their emotions.
Conclusion: therefore children should be taught humanities I found that my argument is intended to be deductive, and, later on, I will put a
counterargument to explain it: My first premise shows that humanities help the kids to learn history. Help them to understand about

of humanities I learned and found insightful.
This course has taught me in general to look at not only the big picture of humanities, but also the finite details of humanities as they are equally
important. When looking at finite details of eras you truly get a sense of what it was like to live in those eras and how the people of those times
thought. As an example, I will compare one difference between two eras we recently covered. I will cover ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Humanities is something I've always known has changed greatly with time, but not to the point that I do now. It's fascinating that this class started
talking about the ancient world and ended at the twenty–first century. With studying the humanities throughout history, I truly get a feeling of the past
and how their humanities eventually led to ours. I found it intriguing that as time went on, I noticed new methods of the arts of humanities became
available as more discoveries and inventions were made. An example of this concept is the invention of TV. With the invention of the TV, came the
ability to form many different pieces of humanities into one, such as art, music, dance, and film. Until I took this course, I never truly thought about
how pieces of the humanities such as literature and paintings from older eras affect our society. William Shakespeare for example wrote many plays
to entertain people of his era, but it's still being read by people from around the world. John Locke wrote the Social Contract which it's key concepts

best of all I was speaking only Japanese the entire time. Overall it was such a great experience being able to go to two different schools in two

Rhetorical Analysis Of Building A Bridge Between...
Rhetorical Analysis of "Building a Bridge Between Engineering and the Humanities"
On February 14, 2016, the Chronicle of Higher Education published an essay by Julio M. Ottino and Gary Saul Morson entitled "Building a Bridge
Between Engineering and the Humanities." Ottino and Morson discuss the importance of the fields of engineering and the humanities. The purpose of
the essay is to show how engineering and the humanities are linked together and are needed simultaneously. Even though, Morson and Ottino adopt a
weak informal tone in the middle of their argument; the authors end their argument strong by successfully using ethos and logos to appeal to their
audience, college and university faculty and administrators.
Ottino and Morson begin with an introduction of the topic of engineering and humanities. The authors use a jovial tone to portray the current
engineering field as "booming" and "an essential part of innovation." They use the appeal of logos to convey the current issues with humanities
programs by suggesting, "The humanities, by contrast, are in peril, with fewer students each year." Morson and Ottino show the current state of both
the engineering and humanities fields in order to emanate a sense of urgency to the reader. This introduction shows that there is a need to fix the
humanities field because it is slowly decreasing to nothing. Most college and university faculty know the current state of the humanities field.
However, Ottino and Morson start their

Loss of Humanities Should Not be a Sacrifice of Eduction...
As the reduction of the Humanities department begins to arise, many students lives are severely impacted. There are many positive and negative
effects which come along with reducing funds in the Humanities departments. Though many individuals might contradict that reducing humanities may
be a beneficial act for some, In my opinion it should not be lessened primarily because it can lead to malevolent mishaps. Decreasing humanities will
result in excessive unemployment rates, superfluous amount of students won't be ready for their vocational lives, and many diligent individuals will
not be able to afford paying for the expenses. How many sacrifices are you willing to take in order to get a superior education?

This illustrates that Humanities is an essential part to everyone because it contributes students with a valuable perception and to get a fast career.
Lastly, many students will not be able to afford paying for the expenses. In the article it states, "Technology executives, researchers and business leaders
argue that producing enough trained engineers and scientists is essential to America's economic vitality, national defense and health care," (Cohen 22 ).
This shows that with the reduction of humanities there will be more engineers but less scientists. Humanities study can make better scientists because
it teaches you how to think in a creative way also in a critical one and to ask questions. These skills are helpful to gain a better understanding and
scientists question everything and prove it by experimenting. "Reading the great literary and philosophical works and coming to grips with the
question of what is living for – may become a great luxury that many cannot afford," (Cohen 24). Without being able to afford for it many people can't
get the education they should receive. In my opinion if the scholars begin to lose interest in their occupation they will major in anything to achieve
their career and grasp a job.
To conclude, without Humanities the courses are elongated and students won't be able to achieve a career if they cannot pay for the the expenses.
Receding humanities will result into excessive unemployment rates, superfluous

Nt1310 Unit 2 Assignment
Over the course of this semester each paper that was written helped to introduce me and my fellow classmates to different formatting, and genres of
writing. A lot of knowledge was gained from writing these papers and I was able to compare and contrast the disciplinary writings and notice what
makes each of them stand out. Reflecting back on these individual papers helps to express what I have learned. The first paper that was written was the
humanities essay. The humanities essay helped to provide an understanding of the artistic analysis of the artwork that we chose to write about.
When the assignment was first assigned I thought it was going to be difficult, seeing that the humanities field is all about expressing your opinion
and deconstructing the text for what it says and not how it does so. As I begun to work on the project I found it to be less challenging. Being able
to look at a piece of art and deconstruct it in an attempt to identify the artist's idea, was exciting. I was able to see and realize things about the
painting that I never would have noticed if it had not been for this paper. In my painting called "Beulah's Baby" I never would have noticed how the
colors used in the painting told their own story of sadness and depression just by the color contrast, and shading that the painter used. One specific thing
that I learned from this project was that there is a more to something than what meets the eye. Although my painting just seemed like a typical

The Social Sciences And Humanities
There seems to be a stigma present in our society, that social sciences and humanities are not as hard and require less work than science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics, STEM, majors. In addition, women are still struggling to gain traction in STEM fields, and face gender bias quite
frequently, as seen in the fact that women are only paid 77 cents for every dollar made by a man. We hypothesized that STEM majors would be rated
as more academically competent than sociology majors. We also hypothesized that male students would be rated as more academically competent than
female students. Finally, our combined hypothesis was that males would receive higher ratings of academic competency, overall, regardless of major.
There was a total of 263 participants in this survey, 173 of them being female. Participants read paragraphs about either a sociology major named James
or Jane, or an engineering major named James or Jane, and then were asked to rate how much they agreed with statements about the student, such as if
the student was naturally smart. Participants were also asked how many hours they expected the student to spend studying a week. We found that the
engineering students were rated higher for being naturally smart than the sociology students. Additionally, we found that the engineering students were
expected to study more hours than the sociology students, and that a female undergraduate was expected to study more hours than a male
undergraduate. These results

Humanity
Humanity is a part of everyday life, but what if your humanity was lost? All throughout the human existence, there has been humanity. In the time
period of humanity, humanity was put to the test. Mass genocides, cruel leaders, world wars, and many more have shown humanity at its lowest. It
shows how humanity is completely destroyed in times of injustice and war. Surviving Hitler, by Andrea Warren and The Diary of Anne Frank by
Goodrich and Hackett show how the Nazi party dehumanized all Europeans that opposed the Nazi party and how they destroyed their humanity in the
process.
In the story Surviving Hitler by Andrea Warren, the main character Jack is living in the time of the holocaust. During his lifetime he goes through

Van Daan has been taking food secretly from everyone while they have been sleeping. His greed took away him common sense and his humanity a
weathered down to nothing. His greed led him to take from the ones who needed the food the most. The terror and dehumanization of the Nazi's
worked. They have scared and terrorized these everyday people into being greedy and forgetting their sense of humanity.
Others may argue that humanity is not lost and destroyed in times of injustice and war, but they are definitely wrong. "Before the war Jack had parents,
a brother, a grandfather, uncles, aunts, and cousins– eighty one people in all. Now, everyone except Jack's second cousins, Robert and Arek, Aunt
Hinda, Uncle Sigmund, and Jack was dead." "If I had known this when I was in the camps, why would I have struggled so hard to live?" You cannot
just think about the time in the camps. You must think about the after effect and psychological problems that this could and have caused. You can
argue that they survived and they still have humanity because they are alive, but would you want to keep living when you know that everyone that
you had known before except 4 people are dead? Where is the humanity in all of this?
All of these stories give examples of the dehumanization of the Nazi's. They took away their names, their lives, and most of all their humanity.
Imagine if you were in that situation. You are alive but do you really feel

The Three Sciences
The three sciences and their knowledge
How knowledge produced is influenced by vocabulary and environmental conditions
In the world of science, there are three main categories which cover many other disciplines. These three main groups are the natural sciences, the social
sciences and humanities. As the name "natural sciences" indicates, the main focus of this particular group of scientists is to find regularities in the
irregular world of today. They would create formulas and structures to illustrate movement. The "social sciences" shed light on how people feel and
what they go through. Some of the disciplines that fall under the social sciences are psychology and political science. This means that social scientists
focus on people related ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The difference in knowledge typically produced by these sciences is highly influenced by the effects environmental circumstances have on the research
that is conducted. Vocabulary use is very different among the three sciences. in the first case mentioned it is clear that it has an influence on the
knowledge, however, the second case shows that it changes the context rather than that it influences the knowledge. The main difference in vocabulary
lies in the fact that the sciences lay their focus on different aspects. This means that even if they research the same person, they can still have very
different results. Furthermore, the conducted research can be influenced by many environmental factors which impact the end results and so the
knowledge produced. Even though the natural sciences can often control the conditions they work in, this does not mean that this does not have an
influence on the results. As the social sciences and humanities do not have the direct possibility of controlling the conditions they do their research in,
this means that these conditions have a large effect on the knowledge eventually produced. In this way the three sciences are very different, which
causes the knowledge produced differ greatly as

When Math and Science Rule the School Essay
In his essay "Dehumanized: When Math and Science Rule the School" published in Harper's Magazine, Mark Slouka argues that mathematics and
science are overshadowing important humanity studies throughout schools all over the United States. Slouka's use of emotional and ethical appeals
through personal experiences and extensive observation offer insight into what he believes is a problem in our modern society: Math and Science
studies receiving more focus and importance than the humanities. Slouka's target audience seems to be the young adults in the United States because
they are the group being affected by this shift in studies in colleges and universities, although our elders should be equally concerned with the rising
problem at hand. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Humanities are required for the development of an individual's creativity and expression, without these skills our society would be monotonous and
bland. Our nation was built on the ideals of freedom and democracy, and although math and science help us to progress economically and
technologically, they don't help individuals to express themselves to be effectively represented by our government. Furthermore, Slouka states that he
is not taking away from the importance of math and science, he is merely stressing the equal importance of humanities. Despite the fact that Slouka
seems jealous and mocking towards math and science at some parts in his essay, he does an equally effective job of stating their necessity to
everyday life. While expressing his idea of what teaching is for, Slouka states "It's about investing in our human capital...it's about ensuring that the
United States does not fall from its privileged perch in the global economy." Despite the fact businesses look for individuals who are experienced in
such areas as math and science, they are also interested in the ability to problem solve and be creative, which cannot be taught by math and science
alone. Slouka's goal is for the United State's education system to find an equilibrium between what he likes to call 'mathandscience' and the humanities.

Changing Views on Humanities in The Art of Racing in the...
"Racing is about discipline and intelligence, not about who has the heavier foot. The one who drives smart will always win in the end." Because
teaching is one of the best ways to learn, Honors College takes learning to the next level. Self–directed learning is essentially being able to teach
yourself. Teaching yourself means being willing to go above and beyond to learn thoroughly, sometimes by using outside sources. The book The Art of
Racing in the Rain, authored by Garth Stein, altered my view on the humanities. This work documented the human experience in a light that I would
not have seen it had I only read the books assigned to me in class. The themes in this book and how they were portrayed helped me to be able learn ...

The zebra represents an internal force of destruction. The zebra shows himself later in the book, but Enzo is unbothered by it because he has overcome
his internal force of destruction. Denny, on the other hand, uses a zebra print pen, showing that he is still working through his self–destruction, through

second chance if you leave business undone. Eve dies in the book but there is not a rebirth talked about for her because she leaves with no unfinished
business. Enzo's rebirth allows him to have the freedom he didn't have as a dog, and Enzo imagines Denny's rebirth to be a famous driver. This gives
the alternate view that death can be looked forward to rather than feared. "If I had a steering wheel to hold onto, everything would be all right." This

The Importance Of Experience In The Humanities Reflection
Throughout my time in the humanities sequence, I have constantly been surprised by the astounding quantity of philosophical questions, topics,
issues, and themes that we learned. It seemed that with each new text we read, there was either a completely new subject matter for us to discuss or
a different perspective for us to contemplate. After reading all of the course texts and being exposed to all of their ideologies, I now find it very
difficult to try and focus on only a select few. All of these texts, from theBhagavad Gita to Ethics for the New Millennium, were all highly influential
to me in some way and seem equally as important from a philosophical standpoint, but I must admit that I appreciated some of the subjects more so
than others from a personal point of view. For example, some of my most memorable experiences from the humanities sequence arose from our class
discussions of The Trial and Death of Socrates, a text we read all the way back in the first half of the Honors 201 semester. In class, we worked to
define what constitutes a sandwich following the logic of Socrates as shown in the text. While there were some disagreements around this definition,
such as whether or not a wrap would constitute a sandwich (which it absolutely does), the class as a whole learned to question the world and the items
in it as we know them. As Socrates pointed out in the text and as we discovered in the activity, human beings can readily be ignorant to what is around
us,

The information age is also the age of massive data collection, of databases, records, data mining and big data in all it's empowering and destructive
potential. Not only since the Snowden leaks of 2012 has the question of, who records and who is being recorded become of interest to a wide
audience. Access to such data collection, the knowledge about it and the subjects' relation to all–encompassing technology have been the basis of many
influential writings of the last two decades.
From works such as Empire (Hardt and Negri) that investigate the effects of an all–encompassing global communication network on what Habermas
called the "public sphere" to Geert Lovink's investigation into the roots and practices of critical Internet culture, scholars agree on the existing and
growing importance of data access. In addition to that exists another school of thought more concerned with the realizations of (digital) memory.
Starting from Derrida's writing on the archive (Derrida), to works such as Wolfgang Ernst's Media Archeology, scholars are interested in the effects of
media as memory agents.
However, none of these works have yet adequately addressed the question of sustainable storage in relation to the power systems as described above.
As the pace in the global information network increases every day and news about data collection, surveillance and leaks have become almost daily

Chapter 19 In The Humanities
When it comes to the humanities, it is not the specific pieces of music, drama or literature that interest me. It is the history that interests me! History
has always been one of the most interesting subjects to me, why things are the way they are today, and I really think that idea goes hand in hand with the
humanities. Reading chapter nineteen in the textbook about the Northern renaissance through about 1600, the part's that interest me the least were the
exerts from Martin Luther's writings. Which is not to say I did not like reading about Martin Luther as a whole, I felt quite interested in what he did
and how he did it! Just that, I do not enjoy reading his writing. Which definitely is not to say that it is not valuable, of course it is

Personal Narrative Essay : The Parable Of The Good Samaritan
The parable of the Good Samaritan was first told to me when I was a wide–eye, elementary schooler at my childhood church. South Union was a
modest, country church that dwelled on the peak of a hill. On one side of the road was South Union, on the other was a drop off into a limestone
quarry. This was southern Indiana at its finest. Comparatively, to the simplicity of this rural congregation, the Bible lessons taught were accepted with
a relative ease. My acceptance of the Good Samaritan was no different. Yet, in the position I am now, I can comprehend why it was so simple for me
and the other children at my childhood church to receive this parable. Our congregation lacked any diversity. We all lived out in the middle of nowhere

The sacrifice of Jesus Christ was the greatest act of reconciliation, and to this day his death persists to reconcile humanity. Moreover, God calls
His people to be "Christ's ambassadors" and conduct ourselves "as though God were making his appeal through us" (2 Corinthians 5:20). Thus, I
am commanded to reflect the God's reconciliation through my actions and remember that as Christ laid down his sinless life to redeem the lives of
sinners, I should dedicate myself to repair the broken relationships amongst humans no matter where my vocation takes me. Additionally, I have to
rid myself of the "messiah complex" as Dr. Moeschberger phrased it. I do not save people. Only God does so. If I inflate my ego to believe I am the
source of reconciliation and that I bestow redemptive love on others, I will lose sight of the only true, unadulterated source of reconciliation– God. I
would be no different than Moses arrogantly striking the rock with his staff, bursting forth a harsh flow of water. And like Moses, I would not be
able to enter my Promised Land, restricted to the mountaintop peering down on God's promise. It is by the power of God alone that this world is
reconciled, and I am simply a vessel of God to assist bringing forth reconciliation for the damaged relationships in humanity.

Allowing for discussion of these altering views creates a unique opportunity for students to dig into their values and ideas to formulate arguments.
Students are forced to view topics from the perspective of others so that they might be able to sustain an argument. Furthermore, when ideas are

different perspectives has the ability for students to better strengthen their argument as well as provide empathy and understanding among those of
different backgrounds. For example, in class when we studied texts from the Bible I was forced to see and understand perspectives from students
who don't come from a Catholic background. I consider myself catholic however my viewpoints don't always align with the Bible. After class

I believe humanities is more than just "the study of human beings by culture and the arts". I believe humanities is the process of how human beings
have advanced rapidly in the sense of how information is gained and delivered to the mind culturally. Humanities shows that time is of the essence and
that with time things are evolving to keep up with modernization and to always have something "original" available, to seem different or culturally of
the world. I believe that humanities have most defiantly made me aware that I am capable of thinking deeper into the meaning of certain information I
have received in my lifetime or even asking questions that I thought could not have an answer. Humanities has made me see life in a different way
and has made me take action in changing some of the habits I have been accustomed throughout my lifetime to such as my diet, habits, and believing
information that has been a lie all along. I am so grateful that I took this course this year because it has made me eager to become a more

Humanity Is The Duty Of Humanity

  • 1. Humanity Is The Duty Of Humanity Humanity has not learned yet Humanity cannot be defined in two simple terms. Two words are not enough to completely encompass everyone and everything, but that is exactly what humans do. It is the duty of humanity to learn and grow which is why mankind must formulate more concise and clear definitions of good and evil. It is flabbergasting that the human species has not been intelligent enough to learn this lesson yet. Continuing, the current definition of evil is too relative to be the same for every human being. Consider the question, do humans have the right to do whatever they can to survive? Secondly, look at Thomas Hobbes' point of view on the social contract and finally reflect on William Golding's Lord of the flies for a unique perspective on human nature in extraneous situations. Humanity in the past has wiped out species, demolished forests, and dumped an ocean's worth of CO2in the atmosphere. The average person would see these examples as abominable, however, we did not at the time and they are still heavily debated topics. If mankind cannot decide exactly what is acceptable, then why do humans try to? Humanity should author a system in which it defines things as acceptable or not while taking into account the relativity. One cannot endeavor to define all of humanity or what they currently consider commencible, as a part of the duty to themselves, they must respect each other's opinions in all situations. To conclude, when defining human nature it is of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Thomas Jefferson: John Locke And The Declaration Of Freedom In a such a fast–paced world, the humanities are the much needed breath of fresh air that allows everything to slow down for a moment. Some use this time to reflect on past experiences and question what they believe and how things are done. But the most important aspect of the humanities is, arguably, its ability to present the past in a simplistic view so that society may learn from its mistakes in order to cultivate a better future. In an attempt to do so, it is imperative that this country is able to get back in touch with its roots. More specifically, John Locke. Though they may not know it, the people already have the tools needed to make a more perfect nation. It is through the study of the humanities that these tools can finally be put to use. ... In doing so, Jefferson connected with the works of John Locke and extrapolated the best of his viewpoints and applied them within the Declaration of Independence. Notably, George Thomas argues that "Locke has been a significant influence on how Americans understand public life and that Lockeanism may be the dominant strand of thought in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution" (464). Even in today's society, Locke is still a prominent figure. In fact, on June 26th, 2015, the Supreme Court looked towards some of Locke's contributions within the Constitution and declared same–sex marriage legal nationwide on the basis of "all men are created equal". Thomas sheds some light on the thought process behind this ruling stating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Humanities And Its Impact On Education Essay Martha Nussbaum argues that primary, secondary, and especially, higher education institutions are cutting the humanities from curricula. According to Nussbaum, our nation and those like it are economically hungry and are pushing technical careers instead. She disputes that a decrease in the humanities will cause a loss in free thinking, and therefore a loss of democracy. Her argument is based off of her theory that without thehumanities, citizens become soulless, mechanical, and profit–making machines. This theory is based off the notion that the humanities are continuing to be cut from curricula at an extensive rate. But are the humanities truly decreasing? Nussbaum is accurate in saying that fewer people are majoring in the humanities; however, she drastically exaggerates the rate in which they are decreasing. In fact, the rate in which the humanities have been declining has levelled out over the past few decades. So, it would seem that democracy is safe, for the most part. What are the humanities? The EncyclopУ•dia Britannica says: "Those branches of knowledge that concern themselves with human beings and their culture or with analytic and critical methods of inquiry derived from an appreciation of human values and of the unique ability of the human spirit to express itself" (EncylopУ•dia Britannica). The humanities look at the humankind as a whole to understand various cultures, ideals, and values. This concept can be looked at throughout history, presently, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Australian Curriculum: Summary And Analysis Humanities and Social Sciences involves students undertaking the process of inquiry learning in order to acquire the desired skills and understandings that are embedded within the Australian Curriculum. Reynolds (2014 p3) suggests that Humanities and Social Science learners need to be 'self–directed, flexible, have complex thinking skills and be reflective of their learning'– these skills are solidly linked to the inquiry process and the Australian Curriculum and is why inquiry learning in the Humanities classroom is so important. • 5. Mcclay: A Controversial Article On The Humanities A common belief today is that the humanities have lost their place in modern America. After a controversial article on the humanities, written by Stanley Fish, was published by The New York Times, many of the online readers had disagreeing or negative comments proving that some Americans still long for the humanities. What Fish could not accept, and what most of the readers believed in, was that the humanities have a specific purpose and task. McClay discusses the burdens of the humanities, but also the things that they are able to do for us. The two main burdens mentioned are the humanities as preceptor, and the humanities as task. • 6. Positive And Negative Effects Of Dictatorships I have always found the human need for power and domination interesting, which is why I choose it for the Research Project. I am interested about how the Dictatorial style of government affects the overall growth of the humanities globally. My goal for this project is to research and understand the positive and negative effects of dictatorships on the academic growth as well as growth in the humanities. There are clear negative effects like the loss of literature in countries such as Germany, where specific types of book from certain eras were burned. In addition to that there are positives such as leaders focusing on education more than other areas of government spending. The paper that would be written using the information gathered through research on this topic would be persuasive, arguing that though there are some positive effects, dictatorships have an overall negative impact on intellect and the humanities. My working research question is: Are the net effects of dictatorships on the areas of the humanities including art and literature as well as academics as a whole positive or negative? My corresponding thesis statement is: On the grounds of global loss of art and literature as well as suffering academics, dictatorships have a negative effect on the country they govern as well as the world as a whole. I will research historical occurrences of dictatorships globally. In addition to that I will research the effects on academics in specific countries. I will also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Humanities Faire Analysis The Humanities Faire was both an amazing and stressful challenge this year, which started in September and ended in October. The ending was a showcase, but there was a long road before that to get to where it ended. On the first day, we did a really rough overview of the time periods we wanted to include, the characters, and what the main view to get across was. On September 1st, that is what we looked at. Breaking into small groups, we got some ideas rolling and brought them to the big group. After about a week of conversing and little researching, we came to one conclusion as to what we wanted to get across: God can and will use different groups of people for his plans. Now that the 'theme' was found, we moved on to narrowing our times and people. For... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Looking at them, we narrowed down the groups of civilizations. Once each of us got characters, we researched them and brought our information to the group to them down. Along with the evaluated information, we wrote a script and designed costumes and set design. As the showcase drew closer, we tried to perfect as much as we could and practiced our lines a lot. Within the final two weeks, the sets were going up and being painted. Games were being created and lines were still being practiced. Our costumes were being found, and this all led up to the dress rehearsal. During this day, we each ran through the whole faire, and as the other groups were running through their parts, we either watched or finished our sets. This was a successful practice, with a few things that needed improving, such as studying lines or performance techniques. Then, it was the big day– the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Humanities Mary Ann Witt Analysis In Mary Ann Witt's work, "The Humanities", she states how our world views culture and how cultures are expressed and embraced. Within the first paragraph she asks, "Is there indeed a 'core' of great works and cultural information that all educated people should be familiar with?". This question is looking at whether it is essential for well educated people to be aware and interested in every piece of a country's heritage and the way they live or if you should only know that if you are truly curious and intrigued by that country and the belief systems they are raised on. Most people would agree that it is important for everyone to be aware of the world around them. That means knowing that some people stop any task they may be in the middle of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Young minds soak up culture just like they seek out to expand their vocabulary and understand the world around them. As described by Witt, a child's mind is like "a field that must be tilled, fertilized, planted, and cultivated by parents, teachers, and other influential members of the society in which the child lives". Children watch every single thing that happens around them and analyzes it deeply. But, as we age, we appear to lose this ability to automatically pay acute attention to a situation, try and look at it from every way, and use everything we have learned about the world in the past in order to figure out how and why this is occurring. Adults get annoyed when children, at the age of normally about 3, will begin to constantly ask why about everything. But really, this should be cherished because we start to not care enough to want to grasp every detail of life once we grow into being teenagers and then adults. So, by continuously exposing children to culture as they mature, we would be encouraging them to stretch out this wonder for as long as possible. A mind that has been surrounded by the same culture everyday of their life, "acquires certain habits, values, beliefs, and ways of thinking". People, when only exposed to the same culture for years, will run out of things to find excitement and curiosity in that leads to the apparent decrease in the analytical aspect of life. Humans are curious creatures. But, we need to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In This Paper, I Plan To Argue The Ideas By Edward Conard, In this paper, I plan to argue the ideas by Edward Conard, in his argument that we don't need more humanities major in our academic system. In specific, this paper will explore the writer's claims, the gaps in his arguments and counter–arguments in this topic. My argument is important because I will challenge Conard's article with the self–fashioning's article by Keohane. In Conard's article, he demonstrates to answer the question whether or not we need more humanities. His answer is that we should be focus on technology and innovation to have a better living standards. (41) His main argument is that innovation and technology are the key to driver of the American economy and there is a need for more talents and expertise in this area. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (43) Schools give one the time and materials to achieve all what one desire in life. (43) In the same way, I would challenge the students to leverage their energy and time to become the best they can be in their life. (43) This paper also supports the self–fashioning article by Keohane. Self–fashioning builds the character, personality, and focus on the student. A self–fashioned student is more likely to succeed in life in whichever line of specialization he chooses. Likewise, I disagree with Conard on the point that innovation and technology are more likely to bring success to the student. From experience, people who know their personality and character are able to use in their skills, time and education to be the best in whichever field, whether in technology and innovation or humanities. In my view, success and failure are not a factor of chosen line of specialization rather, it is a factor of hard work and determination to create a change. Self–fashioning is more fundamental and basic education, like authority, and intelligence and it is determined by how people deal with small and basic things in life. Things like cleaning, washing, and taking care of oneself are more important that education when it comes to self–fashioning. In my life, the most common basic things derive from self–fashioning. • 14. The Difference Between The Art Of Picasso And Braque Modernist Assault: 1. We know that experts had trouble being able to tell the difference between the works of Picasso and Braque. Defend whether or not this made each artist's work any less original. It does not make their art any less original. Originality is about creativity and innovation. While their work was similar, it was the only of it's kind at the time. They pioneered the path of cubism side by side. I would not consider this to be unoriginal, but a tandem effort to make their own art. Surely, they challenged one another which pushed their art to new heights. I don't think cubism would be what it is today without both artists, as they were at the forefront of creating new art during that period. 2. I can understand Marinetti's claim that the motor car was more beautiful than the marble statue of the winged Nike. However, I don't agree with his claim. The motor car is an ingenious creation that required great minds to create, but the question is about beauty. Marble statues bent to the will of man are truly beautiful to me. The statue of Nike is one of my favorites. The way the clothing flows as you can see the tension on the skin makes it far more beautiful to me than a car. • 15. The Importance Of The Humanities Faire The Humanities Faire, which varies year to year, is a very valued outread of Jesse Remington High School. The 2018 Humanities Faire will be Colonial America. Going into the Faire, it is important to know all of the aspects and have an overview of what the Faire is going to focus on. Colonial America is often viewed as just the 13 original English colonies, but often people leave out the fact that there were already French, Spanish, Dutch, and other groups of people in America. That is an important factor to America, along with Great Britain and what happened there to cause people to voyage over to America. Another them that must covered is the religious groups and strifes between those. To accomplish all of this, strong and willing leaders are needed. The way the leaders have been set up in the past two fairs have worked really well. Having two seniors or a senior with a junior has made each group and the overall goal succeed. Keeping the senior as a group leader is wise because they have the most Faire experience and knowledge. Having that second senior or junior is great help for more guidance and helps make the Faire become more of a success and supported. The way they should be paired is by looking at the strengths and weaknesses of each senior/junior and deciding who would work best together to make the project a great achievement. The acts are an attack on human dignity where the crimes can be committed during times of war and peace. Offences that come under this category include murder, extermination, enslavement, deportation or forcible transfer of a population, imprisonment or other severe deprivation of physical liberty, torture, sexual violence, persecution against any identifiable group or collective, enforced disappearance of persons and other inhumane acts of a similar character and gravity1,2,3. The Bosnian War of 1992–1995 was a major conflict that was seen to be politically and racially motivated between the Serbian's, Croatian's and Bosnian's. Personally I think going deeper into the humanities should be optional. Based on my brief tenure in the professional workforce, I didn't need to know about The Ancient Mayan Civilization or have a need for calculus to be successful in my job. At the same time with everything going on in the world today, I think the humanities may benefit some of the people who are freaking out behind the history of this country they live in. If anything I'd wish there would've been advanced home economics classes. I come from a single parent home, as well as the first in my family to graduate college. My mother didn't know much about a budget, 401k, Roth IRA or preparing for the future in general. When I graduated college and moved out on my own, there was so many shocks I encountered living in the real world. I learned from my mistakes and ignorance and now know what to teach my future children what not to do. In college my mom told me to get a credit card to pay for my books, I had no idea I had to pay that money back monthly. I let that debt sit almost three years, when I went to purchase a nicer car that wasn't cash, I learned about credit and how terrible mine was. A few of these themes have been so prevalent that they have flourished throughout the entire sequence of humanities classes. One of the major themes in particular is the idea of truth and where people have found truth in society. Some believe that truth comes from religion and higher powers, while others believe that knowing as many angles of a certain idea gains knowledge and achieves truth. Over history, truth has developed from an absolute truth to a scientific and existential truth. During the pre–modern world sequence, it was apparent that truth was validated by the use of religion and top members of society. This was shown through the work Hymn to the Aten. Egyptian people followed the Aten since he gave them a sense of purpose. At the time in history, religion was a major focus point in society and their lives. That pharaoh that is depicted in the picture was seen as the shining spirit of Aten. The pharaoh gained his knowledge through God which he then passed to his people. The Egyptians agreed on the fact that Aten provided truth since it was directly to the pharaoh through God. However, the weakness in this was that everyone believed the pharaoh to be true, which allowed the pharaoh to have absolute power over his people. A second piece of work during this time period was the work created by Plato called Allegory of the Cave. In this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Importance Of Teaching Humanities And Arts Teaching Children the Arts and Humanities Jenry Martin PHI103: Informal Logic Instructor: Stephen Krogh March 7, 2016 Ashford University My research is about the importance of teaching humanities and arts to kids. Humanities and art can provide understanding to children opening their minds and after my research, I can say I am in favor that children learn in early ages humanities and art. In this paper, I will provide both examples why kids should study them and why not. I will explain how do humanities and art help them to develop their intelligence and how could not be so beneficially for them as well. Even though some people say that art classes are a drain on the economy and art educations are considered a distraction and that art classes do not give children more development in their grades, my research will talk about the importance of teaching humanities and arts to kids. I will show first the good part of teaching at and humanities to kids: Premise 1: Humanities class gives kids sense about where they come from. Premise 2: Humanities helps kid to develop skills they need to grow up. Premise 3: Art relaxes your mind. Premise 4: Art helps kids to express their emotions. Conclusion: therefore children should be taught humanities I found that my argument is intended to be deductive, and, later on, I will put a counterargument to explain it: My first premise shows that humanities help the kids to learn history. With the knowledge I've gained from this course I can now say I have a better understanding of why humanities is important. With that said, I will list a few of the many aspects of humanities I learned and found insightful. This course has taught me in general to look at not only the big picture of humanities, but also the finite details of humanities as they are equally important. When looking at finite details of eras you truly get a sense of what it was like to live in those eras and how the people of those times thought. I found it intriguing that as time went on, I noticed new methods of the arts of humanities became available as more discoveries and inventions were made. An example of this concept is the invention of TV. With the invention of the TV, came the ability to form many different pieces of humanities into one, such as art, music, dance, and film. Until I took this course, I never truly thought about how pieces of the humanities such as literature and paintings from older eras affect our society. Rhetorical Analysis of "Building a Bridge Between Engineering and the Humanities" On February 14, 2016, the Chronicle of Higher Education published an essay by Julio M. Ottino and Gary Saul Morson entitled "Building a Bridge Between Engineering and the Humanities." Ottino and Morson discuss the importance of the fields of engineering and the humanities. The purpose of the essay is to show how engineering and the humanities are linked together and are needed simultaneously. Even though, Morson and Ottino adopt a weak informal tone in the middle of their argument; the authors end their argument strong by successfully using ethos and logos to appeal to their audience, college and university faculty and administrators. Ottino and Morson begin with an introduction of the topic of engineering and humanities. The authors use a jovial tone to portray the current engineering field as "booming" and "an essential part of innovation." They use the appeal of logos to convey the current issues with humanities programs by suggesting, "The humanities, by contrast, are in peril, with fewer students each year." Morson and Ottino show the current state of both the engineering and humanities fields in order to emanate a sense of urgency to the reader. This introduction shows that there is a need to fix the humanities field because it is slowly decreasing to nothing. A lot of knowledge was gained from writing these papers and I was able to compare and contrast the disciplinary writings and notice what makes each of them stand out. Reflecting back on these individual papers helps to express what I have learned. The first paper that was written was the humanities essay. The humanities essay helped to provide an understanding of the artistic analysis of the artwork that we chose to write about. When the assignment was first assigned I thought it was going to be difficult, seeing that the humanities field is all about expressing your opinion and deconstructing the text for what it says and not how it does so. As I begun to work on the project I found it to be less challenging. Being able to look at a piece of art and deconstruct it in an attempt to identify the artist's idea, was exciting. I was able to see and realize things about the painting that I never would have noticed if it had not been for this paper. In my painting called "Beulah's Baby" I never would have noticed how the colors used in the painting told their own story of sadness and depression just by the color contrast, and shading that the painter used. • 28. The Social Sciences And Humanities There seems to be a stigma present in our society, that social sciences and humanities are not as hard and require less work than science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, STEM, majors. In addition, women are still struggling to gain traction in STEM fields, and face gender bias quite frequently, as seen in the fact that women are only paid 77 cents for every dollar made by a man. We hypothesized that STEM majors would be rated as more academically competent than sociology majors. We also hypothesized that male students would be rated as more academically competent than female students. Finally, our combined hypothesis was that males would receive higher ratings of academic competency, overall, regardless of major. There was a total of 263 participants in this survey, 173 of them being female. Participants read paragraphs about either a sociology major named James or Jane, or an engineering major named James or Jane, and then were asked to rate how much they agreed with statements about the student, such as if the student was naturally smart. Participants were also asked how many hours they expected the student to spend studying a week. We found that the engineering students were rated higher for being naturally smart than the sociology students. Additionally, we found that the engineering students were expected to study more hours than the sociology students, and that a female undergraduate was expected to study more hours than a male undergraduate. Vocabulary use is very different among the three sciences. in the first case mentioned it is clear that it has an influence on the knowledge, however, the second case shows that it changes the context rather than that it influences the knowledge. The main difference in vocabulary lies in the fact that the sciences lay their focus on different aspects. This means that even if they research the same person, they can still have very different results. Furthermore, the conducted research can be influenced by many environmental factors which impact the end results and so the knowledge produced. Even though the natural sciences can often control the conditions they work in, this does not mean that this does not have an influence on the results. Furthermore, Slouka states that he is not taking away from the importance of math and science, he is merely stressing the equal importance of humanities. Despite the fact that Slouka seems jealous and mocking towards math and science at some parts in his essay, he does an equally effective job of stating their necessity to everyday life. Despite the fact businesses look for individuals who are experienced in such areas as math and science, they are also interested in the ability to problem solve and be creative, which cannot be taught by math and science alone. The Importance Of Experience In The Humanities Reflection Throughout my time in the humanities sequence, I have constantly been surprised by the astounding quantity of philosophical questions, topics, issues, and themes that we learned. It seemed that with each new text we read, there was either a completely new subject matter for us to discuss or a different perspective for us to contemplate. After reading all of the course texts and being exposed to all of their ideologies, I now find it very difficult to try and focus on only a select few. All of these texts, from theBhagavad Gita to Ethics for the New Millennium, were all highly influential to me in some way and seem equally as important from a philosophical standpoint, but I must admit that I appreciated some of the subjects more so than others from a personal point of view. For example, some of my most memorable experiences from the humanities sequence arose from our class discussions of The Trial and Death of Socrates, a text we read all the way back in the first half of the Honors 201 semester. In class, we worked to define what constitutes a sandwich following the logic of Socrates as shown in the text.
