The book Holes, written by Louis Sachar and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, is a young
adult mystery and adventure novel. It was published on August 20, 1998, and won a Newberry and
National Book Award. The novel follows an overweight Stanley Yelnats as he is wrongfully accused
of stealing shoes and is sent to Camp Green lake. Throughout the generations, Stanley and his
ancestors have been cursed with bad luck since his "no–good–pig–stealing–great–great–
grandfather," Elya Yelnats, promised to bring Madame Zeroni up the mountain to drink it's magic
water but didn't follow through. Even Stanley's great grandfather, Stanley Yelnats the first, was
robbed of his fortune by the outlaw Kissin Kate in the early 1900's. Nevertheless, ... Show more

One day he finds a gold lipstick tube with the initials K.B. inscribed on the side of it. As a result,
The Warden of the camp forces them to dig around where he found it, which makes Stanley
suspicious of what they're here to look for. Overtime Stanley befriends Hector Zeroni or "Zero" and
teaches him to read and write. One day, Hector runs away into the desert after the staff humiliates
him and Stanley chases after him three days later. Once Stanley finds Zero dehydrated under an old
flipped over boat, he convinces him to walk towards the mountain that looked like a hand giving a
thumbs up. Once at the base of the mountain, Zero is too weak and dehydrated to move on so
Stanley carried him up, even though he's still overweight and dehydrated. They eventually reach the
top where they discover water and an onion field. They eat and rest on onions for a week before
deciding to return to camp to look for what the Warden desired. They dig and dig until they
eventually find the treasure chest with Stanley's name on it, or the fortune that kissin Kate stole from
his great grandfather and buried. Then, it's revealed that the Wardens ancestors, the Walkers, have
been looking for the treasure Kate Barlow hid for generations which is why she

"Mr.Sir opened the nozzle and the water flowed out of the tank but did not go in Stanley's canteen."
In Louis Sachar's novel, Holes, Mr.Sir thought stanley was a liar, troublemaker, and was careless,
but he is actually nice, helpful, and loving.
People used to think stanley wasn't very nice but now that they know him most people think he is
really nice. One example that show's stanley is nice is when he took the blame of stealing the
sunflower seeds when magnet was actually the one who stole it. Secondly, instead of trying to beat
up people when they were making fun of Zero Stanley just reminded them that someone does care
about Zero. Lastly, instead of not caring about Zero running away he went after him so he could
help him survive out in the wild and not become buzzard food. Those 3 reasons are why people
started to see how nice Stanley really is.

1 reason that they figured out that stanley was loving was when Zero was so sick and tired that he
couldn't go any further instead of leaving him behind he made it his mission to carry Zero the rest of

leave camp without Hector Zeroni even though his lawyer told him to leave Hector there. Lastly,
when Stanley figured out how much money was inside the suitcase instead of keeping everything
for himself he gave hector half of everything. That is why I think Stanley is not a lier, troublemaker,

"Holes" by Louis Sachar is a novel about a teenager named Stanley Yelnats who is sent to Camp

throughout the novel Stanley develops as a character and over time begins to like himself. In the
novel Stanley and Zero build a strong friendship, throughout their friendship kindness is shown
from both Stanley and Zero. Fate plays a major role in the novel and even saves Stanley throughout
the story. The novel has many ups and downs but Stanley pushes through it.

In the book fate is shown a lot but one main area of fate shown is when Stanley gets sent to camp
green lake and so does Zero, because later in the book we see that Stanley and Zero become best
friends and that Zero is the great, great grandson of Madame Zeroni who is the person that put the
curse on Stanley and his family. In the book, it quotes "I should have just kept them," said Zero. "I'd
already made it out of the shelter and everything. I ended up getting arrested the next day when I
tried to walk out of a shoe store with a new pair of sneakers. If I had just kept those old smelly
sneakers, then neither of us would be here right now." (41.27). Then later in the novel "[Stanley]
remembered what Zero had said a few days before. If Zero had just kept those shoes, then neither of
them would be here right now. As Stanley stared at the glittering night sky, he thought there was no
place he would rather be. He was glad Zero put the shoes on the parked car. He was glad they fell
from the overpass and hit him on the head. When the shoes first fell from the sky, he remembered
thinking that destiny had struck him. Now, he thought so again. It was more than a coincidence. It
had to be destiny". (42.26–28). This shows signs of fate in the book because if zero didn't throw the
shoes the curse would have never been lifted because Stanley and zero would have never

Holes Character Analysis
Stanley Yelnats is the main character in the book Holes, written by Louis Sachar. Stanley is an
overweight 14–year–old boy who has to spend 18 months at Camp Green Lake, a juvenile
correctional facility, because he is wrongly accused for stealing the shoes of the famous baseball
player, Clyde Livingston. In the book, the author portrays Stanley as a young boy who is unlucky
because of a family curse. However, during his stay at Camp Green Lake, Stanley discovers other
traits about himself that he didn't know that he had. In addition to his unlucky trait, bravery and
kindness are also characteristics that can be used to describe Stanley. Stanley considers himself an
unlucky person. He thinks that he and his family have been cursed because of his "no–good–dirty–
rotten–pig–stealing–great–great–grandfather." Stanley is unlucky because he does not have any
friends at school, his teachers sometimes make hurtful comments about him, his family is poor, he
lives in a small apartment, and his father is an unsuccessful inventor. What makes Stanley feel really
unlucky is that he's being punished for a crime he did not commit. Stanley did not steal Clyde
Livingston's shoes. He happened to be walking under an overpass when the shoes fell on him.
Unfortunately, since the shoes happened to be in his hands when the police showed up, he was
found guilty and sent to Camp Green Lake. On page 7, the author points out that Stanley has this
unlucky trait about him by stating that

The words „toughened‟ and „hardened‟ help the reader understand how he has changed since the

rude or disrespectful.
During Camp Green Lake, Stanley starts having some changes, one of the most noticeable ones in

Character Of Stanley Holes
Holes is an award–winning children's novel by the talented, American author, Louis Sachar. The
protagonist, Stanley Yelnats IV, is an average teenage boy that is sentenced to a juvenile behavior
camp, Camp Green Lake, as he is accused of stealing Clyde Livingston's shoes. Throughout the
novel, the author describes Stanley as an overweight and shy teenager, that is bullied at school. For
someone to be a hero, they must be courageous, perseverant and committed. Stanley Yelnats is
bullied and endures a number of significant challenges during his life that helps transform him from
an average 14–year–old to a hero. Louis Sachar has clearly represented Stanley as a perseverant
individual as he doesn't give up when facing a challenge; courageous, as he is determined to find
Zero; and a reliable friend, as he is teaching his friend how to read, even at his worst times.
Stanley is depicted as a very perseverant individual as he never gives up when he undergoes a
difficult challenge. When Stanley comes to accept the test of surviving with no food and water, after
he runs away desperately searching for Zero, he doesn't give up and returns back to Camp Green
Lake. The author conveys the aim of Stanley never giving up, when he says– "Stanley awoke in a
meadow", on page 173. By saying this, the reader knows that Stanley and his friend made it to the
top of the mountain, and it creates an image in the reader's mind of WHAT it looks like. Stanley is
also demonstrating perseverance when he decides to ascend to the top of God's Thumb without any
resources, and by not giving up, he encounters himself in a peaceful meadow with onions to eat and
muddy water to drink. Stanley is also represented to be courageous when he runs away from camp
without any resources to keep him healthy in the hot, dried desert of Texas.
The author portrays Stanley to be a very courageous person throughout his journey. A courageous
person is someone who is not deterred by danger or pain and takes risks to help others. Stanley
displays his bravery when he runs away from camp without any food or water in search of his
friend, Zero. The author says– "He ran.", on page 148; this evidence displays Stanley to be a
courageous person, as he runs away from the

of the counselors troubles him a lot. Stanley was confused and didn't know if Zero was still alive ,
but he still went to go find him . Due to this incident, Stanley changed internally and realized what it
meant to be brave, be compassion for the weak , and be self confidence . Stanley learnt what it
meant to be brave because he went after Zero in the desert knowing that there was no water or food .
He also knew that he would die out there because on page 5, Mr . Sir ( one of the counselors) said
that " You'll be buzzard food in 3 days. "He also knows that the people in Camp Green Lake may not
allow him to come back, which meant that he wouldn't have a place to stay and may die. Therefore,
going to the desert to save your friends life without any water or food and the thought that you

Stanley Yelnats Holes
An important character in 'Holes' the novel is Stanley Yelnats. Stanley Yelnats is an important
character because he highlights main themes such as climbing the same mountain which Stanley
Yelnats the first, climbed (god's thumb). He also broke his family's curse as he fulfilled Elya Yelnats
duty of carrying Madame Zeroni up god's thumb and singing a specific song to her, instead, Stanley
carried Hector Zeroni; Madame Zeroni's great, great, grandson and sung to him.
In 'Holes' a boy named Stanley Yelnats gets accused and arrested for stealing Clyde Livingstonses
sneakers. As Stanley is in court, the judge sends Stanley to Camp Green Lake, a barren wasteland
with a camp on it. The Warden of the camp makes all the boys there to dig holes to find treasure and
"build character". Stanley meets a person called Zero (Hector Zeroni), they climb a mountain and
live off onions and water for weeks on the mountain. They then go back to Camp Green Lake and
dig up Stanley's former hole to look for treasure. Stanley and Zero find a briefcase buried by a
famous outlaw, Kissin' Kate Barlow. The boys stay in the hole for the whole night, as the warden
wanted the treasure and waited for them to come out, and the boys had dangerous lizards on them.

He didn't have a mom or dad. He is also kind of shy– he rarely says anything. Zero was Stanley's
friend. He had run away from Camp Green Lake before Stanley ran away, but Stanley found Zero
far away away from Camp Green Lake! He had found Kate Barlow's canned peaches when he ran
away, which he called "Sploosh". If he hadn't found the peaches, he wouldn't have survived! He and
stanley went to the top of God's Thumb, a big mountain. He and Stanley found wild onions growing
crazy everywhere on the top of God's Thumb, which they ate. Stanley took Zero back to Camp
Green Lake, and the mean warden deleted Zero's records on the computer! (the Warden is VERY
mean to everyone at Camp Green Lake!)
The Warden The warden is the owner of Camp Green Lake. The warden makes kids dig big holes in
the hot sun! She enforces all of the policies at Camp Green Lake. She cheats and lies about things–
one example is when she tried to delete Zero's records on the computer. She was in search for a
suitcase full of valuables, which Stanley and Zero found underground. The reason for making kids
dig holes is to find that suitcase underground. The warden found the suitcase, but she didn't get to
have it– Stanley got to take it home with him!

What evidence does she use to prove her point? Do you find that evidence convincing? Why or why
not? Does any of the author's information (or conclusions) conflict with other books you've read,
courses you've taken or just previous assumptions you had of the subject? The author mentions a lot
of backstory on a broad period of time. He also uses characters to prove his point. Families from
three generations reunite in the end, the curse is broken. Stanley, the main character, grows
throughout his time at the camp. Stanley appears to be the hero of the book, but he isn't exactly the
hero type. When we are introduced to him he seems to be a teenager with no interest or commitment
to any interests in life. Stanley then enters camp where he is pushed around and does not speak up
for himself. Stanley wakes up everyday believing his life is cursed and that only failure awaits him.
Sachar, however, shows us the changes that Stanley goes through while he is at camp. When the
other boys give him the nickname, "Caveman", he feels like he has a place at camp and this boosts
his confidence. He begins talking and laughing with the other boys more. Later, he begins talking to
Zero, a quiet boy who rarely speaks. They become inseparable friends and together they shut Camp
Green Lake. They are both outsiders and the friendship that Stanley and Zero discover in unlikely

Growing up
Holes
"It was all because of his no–good–dirty–rotten–pig–stealing–great–great–grandfather!"
(Sachar,7). Stanley had thought and blamed his grandfather for everything especially in the book
Holes by Louis Sachar. The theme is growing up because in the story Stanley loses his innocence,
shows responsibility for others and himself, and shows learning by his and others mistake. In the
story Stanley shows responsibility by carrying Zero up God's thumb and authority for his actions.
Zero hadn't had food for days beside the "spoolsh" which was making his stomach
crumple.Likewise, if stanley wouldn't have started teaching Zero to read and write or told the other
boys that he was teaching Zero, then the boys wouldn't have ratted out Stanley. Mr.pendanski then
wouldn't have told the warden and Mr.Sir about the lesson Stanley was giving Zero, Zero then
wouldn't have never ran away. "Stanley took hold of Zero's forearms and pulled him up right... He
stood up, lifting Zero's worn–out body off the ground."(Sachar,170).My quote proves Stanley has
responsibility by when he says that he was teaching Zero to read and write when he knew he was

Social Issues In Holes

Stanley was accused of stealing a pair of shoes. But, he didn't really commit the crime. What really
happened was, Zero, a boy from Camp Green Lake threw the shoes over the guardrail on the
highway and hit Stanly on the head as he was walking home from school. Later, Stanley was
accused of stealing the shoes and was sent into Camp Green Lake. This is an example of when
something is unfair because Stanley really didn't steal the sneakers. However. he went to court and
"Because of the baseball schedule, Stanley's trial was delayed several months." "His parents couldn't
afford a lawyer" (Pg.25). Stanley's family could not afford a lawyer and therefore he was found
guilty. Another example of fairness in my novel is when Sam, the onion seller, is treated unfair
because he is black. For example, "Sam wasn't allowed to attend classes because he was a Negro,
but they let him fix the building" (Pg.109). This quote shows the unfairness in the early days of our
country because black people were denied the right to learn. Another example of racial unfairness is
that black people were not allowed to be friendly with white women. It was illegal for a black
person to marry a white women. The sheriff said, " It's against the law for a Negro to kiss a white
women" (Pg. 113). Sam was killed because he kissed a white woman named Miss Katherine

Theme Of The Book Holes
Have you ever been accused of doing something you certainly didn't do? Have you ever had that
feeling that no matter how good you are and how hard you try to not mess up things just turn out?
Have you ever felt as if you were accident prone or if it was just pure bad luck?Well that's what
Stanley Yelnats felt since that was what actually happened in the book Holes by Louis Sachar. There
is a lot to this book, such as themes, characters, and quite a few different locations. The main theme
of this story, Holes, is growing up because, in this book Stanley learns a lot; he has a lot of ambition,
and he shows a ton of responsibility for his own actions, but also for others as well, whether it will
get him into some trouble or not. Stanley learns ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He takes this trait and uses it. He shows it often because in the book he learns that not all his
unlucky events are due to his no–good–dirty–rotten–pig– stealing–great–great–grandfather's curse.
Stanley shows responsibility for his own actions and at one point others actions. "So, tell me
Caveman, said Mr.Sir. How did my sack of sunflower seeds get in your hole? I stole it from your
trunk, Stanley answered."
(Sachar, 56)
This quote was chosen because Stanley says that he took the seed but really he was just covering to
make friends. Another example is when he tries to find Zero and attempts to steal Mr.Sir's truck. In
the moment he gets caught he realized that it was his fault that he got caught and not his no–good–
dirty–rotten–pig–stealing–great–great– grandfather's curse that had been set on the family. In
conclusion this book represents the theme of growing up because the main character shows three of
the characterististics of the theme I chose. These include learning, ambition, and responsibility.
Stanley learns a ton while at Camp Green Lake. He also shows lots of ambition and displays many
forms of responsibility. This book follows a great storyline, as well as one about how the camp used
to be. The story also includes many characters with different personalities and could display way
more than just one main

Stanley Yelnats has a history of being in the wrong place and the wrong time. He was even wrongly
accused of stealing a pair of old sneakers that was owned by a baseball player. He was sent to a
juvenile correction center, Camp Green Lake. On Camp Green Lake there is nothing green and no
lake, there are also no metal bars, electric fences, and no guard towers, all there is are a few cabins
and tents in the middle of nowhere. If the campers tried to run they would be "buzzard food". Each
day every camper has to dig a hole that is five feet in all directions and five feet deep. The Warden
says its to build character, but really it is because the Warden is secretly searching for something.

The deal was for Elya to carry the pig up a moutain so it can drink from it's river every day for the
next forty days, then after forty days he was to carry the old gypsy, Madame Zeroni, up the moutain
so she could drink from it's river, she warned Elya if he failed to do this that he will have bad
fortunes even through the generations. This history weaves in and out of Stanley's present life.
I recommend you read this book because it is written beautifully, weaving in and out of Stanley
Yelnats' generations, from his great–great–grandfather's life to his own, and how they tie together.
This is also a great book because the characters are so real, from the Camp Green Lake campers, to
the Green Lake townspeople. There are many characters with very unique personalities. The kids
from Camp Green Lake are very tough, like one of the kids Rex or X–ray is the leader, Magnet is a
thief he got his nickname because he says his fingers are like magnets. There is also Zigzag, Armpit,
Squid, and Zero. Zigzag, Armpit, and Squid are very muscular and tough from spending so many
days at Camp Green Lake, they also are very loud and talkative unlike Zero. Zero is very silent and
runs away one day, Stanley also runs away in search of Zero. Stanley also finds out that Zero was
really the one who stole the shoes Stanley supposedly stole, by putting them on top of a car and the

then they climbed the mountain and they got really lucky because on top of that mountain were

Suddenly, Stanley hits something made of metal. The pull out a chest, and under it is, a nest of

of shoes, and was sent to camp green lake, a camp for boys to dig holes as a punishment. While he

Louis Sachar successfully keeps his audience reading in his book Holes. I believe that there are two
main reasons how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the reason for this is because Louis Sachar gives us a mystery in the book Holes. He does not
gives us all of the storyline or story right away, he gradually gave us bits and pieces to put together
everything. For example, he first starts giving us the description of the one and only Camp Green
Lake. He doesn't tell us everything about it and it leaves us with many questions so the audience
decides to keep moving on with the book trying to discover all of the answers. This is really clever
because we all want to find out mysteries if we come across them. Louis Sachar also keeps his
audience reading by giving us some pretty interesting characters. The book would be boring to read
if the author just gave us any old characters with basic personalities, but Louis Sachar definitely did
not do that. Louis Sachar gave us unique and

The first hole is the hardest, no, the second hole is way harder. Is digging holes still hard for Stanley,
or has he conquered that fear? At the beginning of the novel Stanley was weak. But because of
digging all the holes, he is stronger by the end of the novel.
Stanley was a very feeble person at the start of the book, could that change? ¨At school bullies like
Derrick Dunne used to pick on him¨,(Sachar, 54). People made fun of Stanley without any
consequences, because Stanley was weak, mentally and physically. He couldn't tell them to stop for
this reason. ¨As he reached down to pick up his canteen, he felt a sudden rush of dizziness¨, (Sachar,
32). The thought of just digging holes made him wary and depressed. He couldn't even go an hour of
digging without getting tired. "Well how'd you like your first hole?¨, asked Squid, (Sachar, 45).
Digging a hole was a challenge to him, he would groan and whine, but not it's over. He can dig a

If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you (Fred Divito). Stanley had many challenges to face at
Camp Green Lake. In the novel Holes, Stanley becomes from a shy, poor person to a rich and brave
person. Stanley in the beginning of the novel was poor, overweight, and bullied. He was also shy
and unlucky. When stanley was poor, it was because he was from a poor family so he had never
been to camp before (pg.5, Sachar). He also was living in a tiny apartment (pg.9, Sachar). This quote
shows that he had never been to camp before because he was poor. Also, living in a tiny apartment
ment that he was poor so he couldn't afford a house. Stanley was also bullied and overweight
because the kids at middle school would often tease him about his size (pg.7, Sachar). Furthermore,

friendship with loyalty to Stanley because in the book Stanley said, "I don't know if I know how to

Zero's face (pg.96, Sachar). When Stanley agreed, it shows that they were starting to have a
friendship with each other. In addition, Stanley didn't want to teach Zero at first but now Stanley
does so he's being loyal. Zero was an inspiration and made Zero dedicated. Stanley event thought
that as long as Zero could keep going, he could keep going to (pg.162, Sachar). This shows that
Stanley knew that Zero felt ten times worse. So, he kept going on, Zero being the inspiration to
continue the journey. Last but not least, Zero brung bravery to Stanley. When they were on Big
Thumb, Stanley was lifting Zero's worn–out body off the ground (pg.170, Sachar). When Stanley
was carrying Zero, it shows that he was brave and strong even though he was weak from climbing
the mountain. Zero made a big impact on Stanley. So then, Stanley changes at the

"You may go to jail or you may go to Camp Green lake."(Sachar,pg.5) The book Holes is about a
boy that steals a pair of shoes and is sent to a juvenile delinquent camp. The book Holes is written
by Louis Sachar. Have you ever been blamed for something you didn't do? My theme is
perseverance because Stanley escapes from the camp, he survives without water, and he risk–taking
by leaving the boat and going to what he thinks is big thumb.
The reason I chose escape is because Stanley escapes from the juvenile delinquent camp. "Put it in
gear!" (Sachar 147) I chose this quote because Twitch was telling Stanley to put Mr. Sir's truck into
gear. This happened when Stanley was trying to escape with Mr. Sir's truck before he escaped on
foot. This affects the rest of the story by we don't get to know what is going on at the camp as much
and the story changes from them being tired all the time from digging holes to Zero and Stanley
being without any water and very little food and shelter. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Sploosh" (Sachar, 156) I choose this quote because Zero is telling Stanley what is in the jar. This
affects the rest of the story by Zero and Stanley surviving on the sploosh and getting back to camp to
get the treasure in the hole and become rich.
The reason I did risk–taking is because Zero and Stanley took the risk to go to the mountain they
saw. "I just want you to look at that mountain up there, see the one that has something sticking out
of it"? (Sachar 159) I chose this quote because Zero and Stanley took the risk to leave the sploosh
and go to the mountain, even though they didn't know if it was Big Thumb or not. This affects the
story by them getting to Big Thumb and getting the water that they needed to survive long enough
that they could get back to camp to get the

like his great great great grandfather did. He was sent to Camp Green Lakes for a crime that he did

Holes uses technical and symbolic film codes to establish the characters personality and what their
life and history is like. Body Paragraph 2: Character , 2 film codes Mr Sir The audience is
positioned to dislike Mr Sir through the use of film codes that portray his personality. Mr Sir works
at Camp Green Lake and he thinks that he is the boss of all the kids there, that is until the Warden
comes into the picture. When the warden comes Mr Sir is more quite and reserved as she
overpowers him. The technical codes display this using Camera Angles. When Mr Sir is with the
warden he is always behind her and the camera is always angled to make the Warden look bigger
and Mr Sir is always in the background. The effect created here is that the warden has more power
over Mr Sir. The viewer then gains a different perspective of Mr Sir's personality through these
technical codes. When Mr Sir was serving one of the juvenile delinquents lunch, he noticed a gash
which passed through the whole of Mr Sir's side of his face. However, they had no knowledge that
the reason for the gash was because of the Warden's snake venom nail polish used when Mr Sir did
not obey her rules and standards. Mr sir got very defensive of this scar on his face and grabbed the
camper and told him "Is there something wrong with my face, is there?". Mr Sir said this in a very
powerful and aggressive tone. The effect this creates on the viewer is that Mr Sir is

Stanley Holes Quotes
If you did something really bad almost maleficent after you got caught where would you go? In the
novel Holes by Louis Sachar, the main character Stanley gets accused of stealing and is sent to
Camp Green Lake. The whole camp is almost a joke considering there is no lake and there is
definitely nothing green. The setting and character had a major influence on Stanley.
In the novel Holes, the main character goes through major changes after being sent to Camp Green
Lake. "If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun it will turn him into a
good boy", is the motto of Camp Green Lake. Digging a hole doesn't seem like a good form of
punishment. It would turn him into a thirsty and sweaty boy but not a good one. Making kids do

Stanley always thought he has it worse but after just talking to zero Stanley probably realized how
things can be even without his no–good dirty–rotten–pig–stealing–great–grandfathers curse. The
fact that zero always had to steal even before he realized it was a wrong thing seems very awkward
or at least would probably appeal to Stanley that. It might also seem like an almost stupid thing to
someone who never had to. "Stanley said to himself that he was larger than Derrick so he could just
beat up Derrick himself. In his mind, they all beat up Derrick but if he wasn't out of shape he could
beat up the boys from Group D or have a large chance at it. While digging his second hole it seems

It was published on August 20, 1998, and won a Newberry and National Book Award. The novel follows an overweight Stanley Yelnats as he is wrongfully accused of stealing shoes and is sent to Camp Green lake. Throughout the generations, Stanley and his ancestors have been cursed with bad luck since his "no–good–pig–stealing–great–great– grandfather," Elya Yelnats, promised to bring Madame Zeroni up the mountain to drink it's magic water but didn't follow through. Even Stanley's great grandfather, Stanley Yelnats the first, was robbed of his fortune by the outlaw Kissin Kate in the early 1900's. Nevertheless, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One day he finds a gold lipstick tube with the initials K.B. inscribed on the side of it. As a result, The Warden of the camp forces them to dig around where he found it, which makes Stanley suspicious of what they're here to look for. Overtime Stanley befriends Hector Zeroni or "Zero" and teaches him to read and write. One day, Hector runs away into the desert after the staff humiliates him and Stanley chases after him three days later. Once Stanley finds Zero dehydrated under an old flipped over boat, he convinces him to walk towards the mountain that looked like a hand giving a thumbs up. Once at the base of the mountain, Zero is too weak and dehydrated to move on so Stanley carried him up, even though he's still overweight and dehydrated. They eventually reach the top where they discover water and an onion field. They eat and rest on onions for a week before deciding to return to camp to look for what the Warden desired. They dig and dig until they eventually find the treasure chest with Stanley's name on it, or the fortune that kissin Kate stole from his great grandfather and buried. Then, it's revealed that the Wardens ancestors, the Walkers, have been looking for the treasure Kate Barlow hid for generations which is why she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Louis Sachar's novel, Holes, Mr.Sir thought stanley was a liar, troublemaker, and was careless, but he is actually nice, helpful, and loving. People used to think stanley wasn't very nice but now that they know him most people think he is really nice. One example that show's stanley is nice is when he took the blame of stealing the sunflower seeds when magnet was actually the one who stole it. Secondly, instead of trying to beat up people when they were making fun of Zero Stanley just reminded them that someone does care about Zero. Lastly, instead of not caring about Zero running away he went after him so he could help him survive out in the wild and not become buzzard food. Those 3 reasons are why people started to see how nice Stanley really is. No one really thought that Stanley was that helpful until he proved it later on in the story. The first way ... Another reason was when Stanley refused to leave camp without Hector Zeroni even though his lawyer told him to leave Hector there. Lastly, when Stanley figured out how much money was inside the suitcase instead of keeping everything for himself he gave hector half of everything. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the book fate is shown a lot but one main area of fate shown is when Stanley gets sent to camp green lake and so does Zero, because later in the book we see that Stanley and Zero become best friends and that Zero is the great, great grandson of Madame Zeroni who is the person that put the curse on Stanley and his family. In the book, it quotes "I should have just kept them," said Zero. "I'd already made it out of the shelter and everything. I ended up getting arrested the next day when I tried to walk out of a shoe store with a new pair of sneakers. If I had just kept those old smelly sneakers, then neither of us would be here right now." (41.27). Then later in the novel "[Stanley] remembered what Zero had said a few days before. If Zero had just kept those shoes, then neither of them would be here right now. As Stanley stared at the glittering night sky, he thought there was no place he would rather be. He was glad Zero put the shoes on the parked car. He was glad they fell from the overpass and hit him on the head. When the shoes first fell from the sky, he remembered thinking that destiny had struck him. Now, he thought so again. It was more than a coincidence. It had to be destiny". (42.26–28). • 13. Holes Character Analysis Stanley Yelnats is the main character in the book Holes, written by Louis Sachar. Stanley is an overweight 14–year–old boy who has to spend 18 months at Camp Green Lake, a juvenile correctional facility, because he is wrongly accused for stealing the shoes of the famous baseball player, Clyde Livingston. In the book, the author portrays Stanley as a young boy who is unlucky because of a family curse. However, during his stay at Camp Green Lake, Stanley discovers other traits about himself that he didn't know that he had. In addition to his unlucky trait, bravery and kindness are also characteristics that can be used to describe Stanley. Stanley considers himself an unlucky person. He thinks that he and his family have been cursed because of his "no–good–dirty– rotten–pig–stealing–great–great–grandfather." Stanley is unlucky because he does not have any friends at school, his teachers sometimes make hurtful comments about him, his family is poor, he lives in a small apartment, and his father is an unsuccessful inventor. What makes Stanley feel really unlucky is that he's being punished for a crime he did not commit. Stanley did not steal Clyde Livingston's shoes. He happened to be walking under an overpass when the shoes fell on him. Unfortunately, since the shoes happened to be in his hands when the police showed up, he was found guilty and sent to Camp Green Lake. On page 7, the author points out that Stanley has this unlucky trait about him by stating that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Character Of Stanley Holes Holes is an award–winning children's novel by the talented, American author, Louis Sachar. The protagonist, Stanley Yelnats IV, is an average teenage boy that is sentenced to a juvenile behavior camp, Camp Green Lake, as he is accused of stealing Clyde Livingston's shoes. Throughout the novel, the author describes Stanley as an overweight and shy teenager, that is bullied at school. For someone to be a hero, they must be courageous, perseverant and committed. Stanley Yelnats is bullied and endures a number of significant challenges during his life that helps transform him from an average 14–year–old to a hero. Louis Sachar has clearly represented Stanley as a perseverant individual as he doesn't give up when facing a challenge; courageous, as he is determined to find Zero; and a reliable friend, as he is teaching his friend how to read, even at his worst times. Stanley is depicted as a very perseverant individual as he never gives up when he undergoes a difficult challenge. When Stanley comes to accept the test of surviving with no food and water, after he runs away desperately searching for Zero, he doesn't give up and returns back to Camp Green Lake. The author conveys the aim of Stanley never giving up, when he says– "Stanley awoke in a meadow", on page 173. By saying this, the reader knows that Stanley and his friend made it to the top of the mountain, and it creates an image in the reader's mind of WHAT it looks like. Stanley is also demonstrating perseverance when he decides to ascend to the top of God's Thumb without any resources, and by not giving up, he encounters himself in a peaceful meadow with onions to eat and muddy water to drink. Stanley is also represented to be courageous when he runs away from camp without any resources to keep him healthy in the hot, dried desert of Texas. The author portrays Stanley to be a very courageous person throughout his journey. A courageous person is someone who is not deterred by danger or pain and takes risks to help others. He was forced to dig holes 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep . During his time at Camp Green Lake, he meets a friend named Zero . Zero is a very odd person and the counselors often times make fun of him . Zero decides to run away because one of the counselors troubles him a lot. Stanley was confused and didn't know if Zero was still alive , but he still went to go find him . Due to this incident, Stanley changed internally and realized what it meant to be brave, be compassion for the weak , and be self confidence . Stanley learnt what it meant to be brave because he went after Zero in the desert knowing that there was no water or food . He also knew that he would die out there because on page 5, Mr . Sir ( one of the counselors) said that " You'll be buzzard food in 3 days. "He also knows that the people in Camp Green Lake may not allow him to come back, which meant that he wouldn't have a place to stay and may die. • 31. Holes Quotes Growing up Holes "It was all because of his no–good–dirty–rotten–pig–stealing–great–great–grandfather!" (Sachar,7). Stanley had thought and blamed his grandfather for everything especially in the book Holes by Louis Sachar. The theme is growing up because in the story Stanley loses his innocence, shows responsibility for others and himself, and shows learning by his and others mistake. In the story Stanley shows responsibility by carrying Zero up God's thumb and authority for his actions. Zero hadn't had food for days beside the "spoolsh" which was making his stomach crumple.Likewise, if stanley wouldn't have started teaching Zero to read and write or told the other boys that he was teaching Zero, then the boys wouldn't have ratted out Stanley. Mr.pendanski then wouldn't have told the warden and Mr.Sir about the lesson Stanley was giving Zero, Zero then wouldn't have never ran away. "Stanley took hold of Zero's forearms and pulled him up right... He stood up, lifting Zero's worn–out body off the ground."(Sachar,170).My quote proves Stanley has responsibility by when he says that he was teaching Zero to read and write when he knew he was going to get in trouble in the end. Also when he had ... But, he didn't really commit the crime. What really happened was, Zero, a boy from Camp Green Lake threw the shoes over the guardrail on the highway and hit Stanly on the head as he was walking home from school. Later, Stanley was accused of stealing the shoes and was sent into Camp Green Lake. This is an example of when something is unfair because Stanley really didn't steal the sneakers. However. he went to court and "Because of the baseball schedule, Stanley's trial was delayed several months." "His parents couldn't afford a lawyer" (Pg.25). Stanley's family could not afford a lawyer and therefore he was found guilty. Another example of fairness in my novel is when Sam, the onion seller, is treated unfair because he is black. For example, "Sam wasn't allowed to attend classes because he was a Negro, but they let him fix the building" (Pg.109). This quote shows the unfairness in the early days of our country because black people were denied the right to learn. Another example of racial unfairness is that black people were not allowed to be friendly with white women. It was illegal for a black person to marry a white women. Have you ever felt as if you were accident prone or if it was just pure bad luck?Well that's what Stanley Yelnats felt since that was what actually happened in the book Holes by Louis Sachar. There is a lot to this book, such as themes, characters, and quite a few different locations. The main theme of this story, Holes, is growing up because, in this book Stanley learns a lot; he has a lot of ambition, and he shows a ton of responsibility for his own actions, but also for others as well, whether it will get him into some trouble or not. Stanley learns ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He takes this trait and uses it. He shows it often because in the book he learns that not all his unlucky events are due to his no–good–dirty–rotten–pig– stealing–great–great–grandfather's curse. Stanley shows responsibility for his own actions and at one point others actions. "So, tell me Caveman, said Mr.Sir. How did my sack of sunflower seeds get in your hole? I stole it from your trunk, Stanley answered." (Sachar, 56) This quote was chosen because Stanley says that he took the seed but really he was just covering to make friends. Another example is when he tries to find Zero and attempts to steal Mr.Sir's truck. In the moment he gets caught he realized that it was his fault that he got caught and not his no–good– dirty–rotten–pig–stealing–great–great– grandfather's curse that had been set on the family. Stanley learns a ton while at Camp Green Lake. He also shows lots of ambition and displays many forms of responsibility. At the beginning of the novel Stanley was weak. But because of digging all the holes, he is stronger by the end of the novel. Stanley was a very feeble person at the start of the book, could that change? ¨At school bullies like Derrick Dunne used to pick on him¨,(Sachar, 54). People made fun of Stanley without any consequences, because Stanley was weak, mentally and physically. He couldn't tell them to stop for this reason. ¨As he reached down to pick up his canteen, he felt a sudden rush of dizziness¨, (Sachar, 32). The thought of just digging holes made him wary and depressed. He couldn't even go an hour of digging without getting tired. "Well how'd you like your first hole?¨, asked Squid, (Sachar, 45). In the novel Holes, Stanley becomes from a shy, poor person to a rich and brave person. Stanley in the beginning of the novel was poor, overweight, and bullied. He was also shy and unlucky. When stanley was poor, it was because he was from a poor family so he had never been to camp before (pg.5, Sachar). He also was living in a tiny apartment (pg.9, Sachar). This quote shows that he had never been to camp before because he was poor. Also, living in a tiny apartment ment that he was poor so he couldn't afford a house. Stanley was also bullied and overweight because the kids at middle school would often tease him about his size (pg.7, Sachar). Furthermore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Holes Sachar Quotes Holes "You may go to jail or you may go to Camp Green lake."(Sachar,pg.5) The book Holes is about a boy that steals a pair of shoes and is sent to a juvenile delinquent camp. The book Holes is written by Louis Sachar. Have you ever been blamed for something you didn't do? My theme is perseverance because Stanley escapes from the camp, he survives without water, and he risk–taking by leaving the boat and going to what he thinks is big thumb. The reason I chose escape is because Stanley escapes from the juvenile delinquent camp. "Put it in gear!" (Sachar 147) I chose this quote because Twitch was telling Stanley to put Mr. Sir's truck into gear. This happened when Stanley was trying to escape with Mr. Sir's truck before he escaped on foot. This affects the rest of the story by we don't get to know what is going on at the camp as much and the story changes from them being tired all the time from digging holes to Zero and Stanley being without any water and very little food and shelter. ... This affects the rest of the story by Zero and Stanley surviving on the sploosh and getting back to camp to get the treasure in the hole and become rich. The reason I did risk–taking is because Zero and Stanley took the risk to go to the mountain they saw. "I just want you to look at that mountain up there, see the one that has something sticking out of it"? (Sachar 159) I chose this quote because Zero and Stanley took the risk to leave the sploosh and go to the mountain, even though they didn't know if it was Big Thumb or not. This affects the story by them getting to Big Thumb and getting the water that they needed to survive long enough that they could get back to camp to get the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Holes uses technical and symbolic film codes to establish the characters personality and what their life and history is like. Body Paragraph 2: Character , 2 film codes Mr Sir The audience is positioned to dislike Mr Sir through the use of film codes that portray his personality. Mr Sir works at Camp Green Lake and he thinks that he is the boss of all the kids there, that is until the Warden comes into the picture. When the warden comes Mr Sir is more quite and reserved as she overpowers him. The technical codes display this using Camera Angles. When Mr Sir is with the warden he is always behind her and the camera is always angled to make the Warden look bigger and Mr Sir is always in the background. The effect created here is that the warden has more power over Mr Sir. The viewer then gains a different perspective of Mr Sir's personality through these technical codes. When Mr Sir was serving one of the juvenile delinquents lunch, he noticed a gash which passed through the whole of Mr Sir's side of his face. However, they had no knowledge that the reason for the gash was because of the Warden's snake venom nail polish used when Mr Sir did not obey her rules and standards. Mr sir got very defensive of this scar on his face and grabbed the camper and told him "Is there something wrong with my face, is there?". Mr Sir said this in a very powerful and aggressive tone. In the novel Holes by Louis Sachar, the main character Stanley gets accused of stealing and is sent to Camp Green Lake. The whole camp is almost a joke considering there is no lake and there is definitely nothing green. The setting and character had a major influence on Stanley. In the novel Holes, the main character goes through major changes after being sent to Camp Green Lake. It would turn him into a thirsty and sweaty boy but not a good one. Making kids do hard labor seems like torture not a way to build character. Making them a dig a hole ...
