The Civil Rights Movement
The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s was a series of sit–ins, boycotts, freedom rides, and
marches. They were all used as ways to peacefully protest the fight for freedom and equality for all.
These events took place to try and stop the discrimination and racism of all people but especially
people of color. A major leader and influencer of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement was Martin
Luther King Jr., whom along with many others, participated in many of the peaceful protests and
marches put together by the people of the Freedom Movement. Martin Luther King Jr. brought new
perspective to the whole fight for freedom through his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. Martin
Luther King Jr. was one of the most recognized and well known advocates, but there were also
many others that led protests and were involved in the movement. Some were into peaceful protests
like Rosa Parks, but others wanted to take a more aggressive and loud approach like W.E.B. Du
Bois. There were many historical events that shaped the Civil Rights Movement, and these events
were the foundations for the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. The Montgomery bus
boycotts, the freedom rides, and the Selma marches were some of the most memorable major
contributing events to the series of protests in the fight for Civil Rights. The Montgomery bus
boycotts were a series of protests against the Alabama public transportation system due to the unruly
arrest of Rosa Parks. In Montgomery, Alabama the buses of

Harper Lee:
The One Hit Wonder
"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's
gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why
it's a sin to kill a mockingbird" (Lee. 72) Many teens all over the world have read or heard this
iconic quote, whether by force because it was in the schools curriculum or for my fellow book
worms it is a great novel to just lose yourself in. To Kill a Mockingbird, winner of the prestigious
Pulitzer Prize and several other literary awards was written by Harper Lee in nineteen sixty.

Lee was a daughter to an ill mother and Truman living with family friends after being abandoned by
his own parents. It is believed by The Telegraph journal that Lee's past helped influence her growing
interest in English Literature.
To help feed her cultivating lust with such literature, after Lee graduated in 1944, she went to the
all–female Huntingdon College in Montgomery. It is said that Lee "stood apart from the other
students." (Biography.com) Rather than caring about fashion or dating, Lee focused on her studies
and her own personal writing. Throughout Lee's college career, in Montgomery, she was a member
of the literary honor society. After transferring to the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, Lee was
characterized to be "a loner and an individualist." (Biography.com) Using her new title as
motivation, Lee pursued her interest in writing by contributing to the school's newspaper and also a
humor magazine, the Rammer Jammer, which she later became the editor of. Sadly after Lee was
accepted into the university's law school she was forced, if one may say, to leave her post as editor
of the Rammer Jammer. After much soul seeking and countless heart–to–heart conversations with
her family, Lee dropped all interest in law and moved to New York City to follow her dream to
become a writer.
In nineteen forty–nine, a twenty–three year old Harper Lee arrived in New York City where she

To Kill A Mockingbird Character Analysis
To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee has been banned by some school districts since its publication
in 1960, but it is also loved and treasured as a classic "full of wisdom" (Greitens) by millions. It is a
story of learning to accept others, learning to compromise, learning to be uncomfortable in certain
situations. Governor Greitens of Missouri writes to his sons about To Kill a Mockingbird: "part of
the wisdom of the book is how the characters respond to... troubling words. But you can't appreciate
their actions without feeling the discomfort. The author wanted you to wince. That kind of
discomfort is how you grow....Discomfort is the warm–up act of growth." Lee helps Scout, Jem,
Dill, and readers grow through the themes of social expectations, rumors, and racism.
Scout likes to be seen differently and does not follow the social expectation of how women should
act and dress in the 30's. She gets offended when her brother or anyone tells her she acts like a girl
or refers to her as a girl. Scout likes being called a tomboy and that makes her unique. Scout says to
the readers "I was not sure, but Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things,
that's why other people hated them so..."(41). Jem said this to her because she though Atticus who is
their father knew what they were playing and doing. So Jem was saying Scout was imagining that
their father knew what was going on. Jem and everyone expects Scout to act like a girl, but she is
not like that. Scout likes

"The turning point in the process of growing up is when you discover the core of strength within
you that survives all hurt" (Max Lerner). As children begin the process of growing up they have to
go difficult times and periods in order to become an adult. Even though the events may hurt, they
still gain strength from those events and when then find that strength, then they begin to truly grow
up. This lesson is learned throughout Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. The story takes
place in the 1930s in the small town Maycomb County, Alabama. The main character Scout starts
the story out as a young girl who behaves as a tom–boy and she favors fighting rather than talking
out her feelings. Scout's father Atticus is trying to teach her how to mature, but it is a long process.
Her older brother Jem and their best friend Dill contribute toward her staying immature by messing
around with the neighbors, specifically the Radley's. They become fascinated with the mysterious
son, Arthur (Boo) Radley. But overtime, he becomes insignificant because of Atticus's job and the
stress that it puts on the family after he takes a difficult case. As a result of this case Scout matures
faster than normal because of the difficult material. Throughout the novel, Scout becomes more
mature causing her to strengthen her compassion toward others, which shows how through growing
up, people experience situations that cause them to understand the appropriate way to act.

Go Set A Watchman By Harper Lee
Synopsis Harper Lee's novel, Go Set a Watchman, tells the story of the 26–year–old Jean Louise as
she gains awareness of her father's flaws and becomes a more independent and flexible person.
During the novel's exposition, Jean Louise is on a train returning to her hometown, Maycomb, to
visit her aging father, Atticus. Upon returning home, Jean Louise quickly gets into an argument with
her aunt, Alexandra, over trivial matters. The two continue to bicker at each other until Atticus
intervenes. While Jean Louise finds it extremely frustrating that her aunt is never able to understand
her point of view, she finds comfort believing that Maycomb has remained the same since she last
left. The narrative hook occurs when Jean Louise is informed of the changes that have taken place in
Maycomb. A notable example is when Henry Clinton, Jean's old friend, informs her that her family
sold Finch's Landing to a club. Jean is surprised at this and expresses her displeasure at her world
changing by stating; " 'I just don't like my world disturbed without some warning...'" (Lee 75). Many
of the changes don't hinder Jean, but she is still bothered by the fact that her world is changing
without her knowledge. During the rising action, Jean Louise discovers a racist pamphlet owned by
her father. She confronts Alexandra about it, and her aunt informs her that Atticus had brought it
home from the citizen's council meeting. Mortified, Jean Louise goes to the meeting to find Atticus

Alabama Civil War
Journal Article Review #1 McCollum, C.
THE NEGRO IN ALABAMA DURING THE CIVIL WAR The hardships faced by the slaves
during and immediately following the Civil War were relatively the same as they had been prior to
the war. During the war, the only thing that changed for some was their "Masters". The Governor of
Alabama, by an act of 1861, was authorized to accept the services of slaves offered by certain
slaveholders and in October the following year he was empowered to impress slaves between the
ages of 18 and 45 to use as laborers, essentially making the state their masters. Amendments to the
afore mentioned act in 1864 enabled the sheriff to enforce this act. The slaves were used for building
defenses in the state as well as to take the place of whites who were enlisted and fighting the war.
Some slaves accompanied their owners into battle and a few free blacks served as substitutes for
whites. By 1865, the confederacy had decided to enlist slaves but the war ended before this plan
could carried out. In 1863, the Union Army in Alabama, employed the first Negro troops to be used
mainly for fatigue duty but they were used as line soldiers in a few minor battles. From January to
October 1864, James T. Ayres a freeman from Illinois served as the recruiter in north Alabama.
While here Ayres learned just how devoted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Hazard Mitigation Plan For Hurricanes
Executive summary
Hazard mitigation planning is an approach aimed at ascertaining ways to reduce the effects, deaths
and damage to property that might result in the occurrence of a natural of man–made hazard.
Hurricanes are among the costliest and the most destructive of natural disasters. Since 1995, the
United States has witnessed more intense activities by hurricanes with Mobile County in Alabama
experiencing hurricane Ivan and hurricane Dennis in 2004 and 2005 (Link, 2010). In 2005,
Hurricane Katrina was the costliest and one of the deadliest hurricanes to have hit the United States
and was rated category three in Mobile County (Marchi, 2007). The response to the disaster was

addresses hazards with an aim of identifying feasible and cost effective pre–disaster steps that
should be taken in the instance of actualization of the risk. The plan will also

region is the Cumberland Plateau. It is known for its red clay soil. Along with that, It has rolling
hills, sandstone ridges, and other great things in this stupendous land region. Another addition to
these neat regions is the Gulf Coastal Plain. It has many wetlands which are vital sources of shelter

Alabama is trying to reverse it and bring back those wetlands. Within all of these land regions,

FAT TUESDAY RUN All around Louisiana, the people celebrate Mardi Gras in early spring. Urban
cities such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge utilize fancy bright lighted parades, celebrity kings and
queens, and shiny beads to celebrate the festivities. Growing up in south Louisiana, I attended many
of these parades in the Big Easy. My grandparents would tell stories of rural Mardi Gras and the
Cajun culture. After hearing their stories, I decided to attend the courir de Mardi Gras. The courir de
Mardi Gras is a traditional Mardi Gras event held the Tuesday before the catholic lent season in
small rural towns. This is known as Fat Tuesday run.

see. The majority of the farms grew crops of rice . But this time of year, the farmers flood the rice
fields to farm another delicacy of Cajuns, crawfish. After a short ride, we reached the first farm. It
was a small quaint farm with a small white wooden house and an old wood barn. The farmer and his
wife walked up to the captain. The captain spoke quietly to the farmer. From what I was told was the
captain was asking the farmer's permission to come on his farm and to offer dancing for any charity.
The riders waiting anticipally for the captain to wave his flag. The flag was suddenly waved and the
riders raced onto the property. The farmer grabbed a chicken from his coup by the legs. He raised it
in the air and released it. Several costumed riders frantically jumped off of their horses and began
chasing the chicken around the farm. While this was going on, the band began to play a familiar
Mardi Gras tune. One of the costumed men asked the farmer's wife to dance as an offering for their
generosity. The two were stomping , swaying and following the timing of the music. Others joined
in the festivities. Drinking, smiling and laughing occurred, as the riders finally caught the chicken.

HISTORY Today I will be talking about the history of King Cakes and Mardi Gras. The King Cake
is a brioche–style cake traditionally made throughout the State of Louisiana during the weeks prior
to Mardi Gras. The King Cake tradition is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from
France in 1870. The celebration of Mardi Gras came to North America from France where it had
been celebrated since the Middle Ages. It's decorated in royal colors of PURPLE which signifies
"justice", GREEN for "Faith", and GOLD for "power". Today in New Orleans, the king cake is an

In 1871, the tradition of choosing Queen of Mardi Gras was determined by who drew the prize
within the cake. Today, such a find is still deemed to be a sign of good luck and it customary for the
person who discovers the hidden plastic baby to host the next party. In the past such things as coins,
beans, pecans, or peas were also hidden in each King Cake. In the early 19th century, the public
celebration of Mardi Gras consisted mainly of maskers on foot, in carriages and on horseback. In
1837, a costumed group of revealers walked in the first documented "parade", but the violent
behavior of maskers during the next two decades caused the press to call for an end to Mardi Gras.
Fortunately, six New Orleanains who were former members of the Cowbellions, a group that
presented New Years Eve parades in Mobile, AL, saved the New Orleans Mardi Gras by forming the
Comus organization in 1857. The men beautified the celebration and proved that it could be enjoyed
in a safe manner. Comus coined the word "Krewe" and established several Mardi Gras traditions by

How Mass Incarceration Has Become The New Form Of Jim Crow...
Since the beginning of this great nation there has always been a racial caste systems due to slavery,
money, and greed. The End of slavery was after the civil war and enfourced through the 13th
Amendment. The loophole that was created that was the exception that criminals can be treated as a
involuntary servitude, which was noted in the U.S constitution. To speed things along you have the
slavery which transferred to convicted leasing to Jim Crow Era and now Mass Incarceration which
all has striped millions of the people, whom are in the lower caste systems, away from their families
similar to slavery. This paper focus on how mass incarceration has become the new form of Jim
Crow and slavery. The United Stated population represent 5% of the world population, but we have
25% of the world prisoners (NAACP). In the USA people of color represent 30% of the populations
but contributes to 60% of those who are imprisoned(NAACP). I hope that that this study will open
up conversations that the we are in a new form of Jim Crow and how Mass Incarceration should be
tentatively looked through and help come up with ways to make Mass Incarceration go away. As
social workers we must advocate for the people who cannot advocate for themselves, rather it is
because of money or lack of education they do not know how they are being taking advantage of. It
is in our hearts to make sure that everyone is in the same postion so that they can be the best that
they can be. The purpose of this study

What Is Mardi Gras Parade
1. What is this parade called, and where is it located? What is this parade about? What are they
celebrating in this parade? Few parades are more iconic than the Mardi Gras parades of New
Orleans. Many may view Mardi Gras as simply a giant parade of debauchery centering around
revelry, alcohol, bead throwing and an excuse to bare skin. However, there are also those who do not
know that there are many parades rather than one Mardi Gras Parade. These parades are deeply
rooted in the history and society of New Orleans and its residents. These Parades are celebrations
leading up to Mardi Gras (translated to Fat Tuesday from the French) which marks the beginning of
the Christian Lent period. Lent involves fasting (with much of the focus on the abstinence of meat
consumption,) but Mardi Gras parade roots herald back to ancient Rome. Roman men would

Theme Of Innocence In To Kill A Mockingbird
In the world, all children are born pure and innocent. It is through corrupting events that society
slowly spoils their purity and rots their innocence over time. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee
manifests the process of said corruption of innocence and purity through the growth of the three
main child characters. Dill Harper Lee implies throughout her novel To Kill A Mockingbird that loss
of innocence occurs, especially in troubling times, through Dill, Jem, and Scout. Lee uses the middle
child, Dill, to convey the loss of innocence and purity. After Scout walks Dill out of the courtroom
because he is crying, he says, "I don't care one speck. It ain't right, somehow it ain't right to do 'em
that way. Hasn't anybody got any business talkin' like that– it just makes me sick" (266). Since he
says it makes him sick, this is a hyperbole. This hyperbole shows Dill realizes that most of the white
population of Maycomb is extremely judgemental and racist, and do not consider black people equal
to white people. Tom Robinson did not stand a chance in this trial, and everyone knew it, even
Atticus, and Dill is finally understanding what the world is really like. After Scout finds Dill under
her bed, she narrates," He could add and subtract faster than lightning, but he preferred his own
twilight world, a world where babies slept, waiting to be gathered like morning lilies. He was slowly
talking himself to sleep and taking me with him, but in the quietness of his foggy island

Essay On Racism In To Kill A Mockingbird
Although some people think that the problems of civil rights is gone, it is more present than ever.
Racial discrimination is occurring in many ways and prejudice is a huge contributing factor which
many people don't realize. In her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows a family in the
South during the 1930's, experience prejudice at the extreme. Young Scout, who is the narrator, lives
in Maycomb, Alabama where there is a lot of racism. Because of this, many problems erupt when
people try to change the towns ways. Scout grows throughout the book as she experiences many

Francis saying this further helps Scout understand the discrimination, because she now knows that
even family will turn on her. During the spring, Scout's brother Jem ruins the yard of their
conservative, old, neighbor, Mrs. Dubose. As a punishment, both of the Finch children are forced to
take care of her. When they are at her house, she rudely scoffs, "Your father's no better than the
niggers and trash that he works for!" (102) The author uses the word "trash" to show Scout that
some people who are very selfish use derogatory words like trash to display their feelings.
Additionally, trash is a very insulting word to call someone, especially because Scout knows what it
means. Mrs. Dubose yelling at the children causes Scout to get a better picture of what the reality of
their world is. All of these examples from the novel, illustrate how Scout is learning about racism in
many forms by witnessing the actions and language of others. Later in the story, Scout becomes
more aware of racism around her and starts to question the town's discriminatory ways. When Scout
comes home from Mrs. Dubose's house, she is really upset. She is mad because Mrs. Dubose had
said some really harsh things to her about Atticus. After this, Scout starts questioning to Atticus what

Montgomery Advertiser, the city 's local newspaper, denouncing the horrible injustices she
witnessed on the city buses. In these letters, she said segregation was un–Christian and wrong, and
the citizens of Montgomery should do something about it. The response was immediate: Morgan
lost her job at a local bookstore.
One morning as she rode the bus, Morgan watched a black woman pay her fare and then leave

Mardi Gras Research Paper
The holidays aren't over just yet. It's time to "throw me something Mister!"
January 6th kicked–off Carnival season also known as Mardi Gras. This year's season runs from
January 6–February 28. From now until Fat Tuesday, there will be Mardi Gras themed balls,
celebrations, parades and more happening in Shreveport, Destin, Memphis, Fort Walton Beach,
Destin, and of course New Orleans.
If Mardi Gras is a foreign concept to you or you just need a refresher, here are some definitions and
tidbits to get you up to speed:
Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday. It is the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual
of fasting during the Lenten season.
Although New Orleans' Mardi Gras celebrations are much more widely known, Mardi Gras in North
America actually began Mobile, AL in 1703, fifteen years before New Orleans was ... Show more

Lundi Gras is French for Fat Monday. It is the day before Mardi Gras.
The colors of Mardi Gras are purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power.
King cake is the pastry of Mardi Gras. The cake is named for the three kings who visited the Christ
child. Over 300 years ago, the cake started out as a dry French bread type of dough with sugar on
top and a bean inside. Now king cakes come in the sweet brioche dough variety and also donuts
filled with several fillings, and a small plastic baby to represent baby Jesus. Tradition has it that
whoever finds the baby in the cake, is responsible for purchasing the next year's cake.
Beginning in the 18th century, runaway slaves were sometimes taken in by local Native Americans.
In homage, African Americans began to band together in tribal krewes called Mardi Gras Indians,
headed by chiefs rather than captains. Their costumes are elaborate creations of feathers and beads
and the custom is handed down from father to son.

How Did Mardi Gras Floats
Throw Me Something Mister Mardi Gras is the time for friends and family to gather together and an
unforgettable time. Mardi Gras is viewed as a city celebration. New Orleans shut the whole city
down to have the parades. Walking down Canal Street all that is seen is the people camped out
waiting for the parades to start. The barbeque pits are lit and the cookouts begin. Just looking around
and seeing people come together all for the same thing is very exciting. Mardi Gras has changed
over the years since attendance. My father is originally from New Orleans, so he told me some of
the history. He told me how the people on the floats would throw out livestock and whatever you
caught that day, is what would be prepared for dinner. The history ... Show more content on

When making the trip to the city what I'm saying is what would automatically be visualized.
Majority of the streets are going to be blocked off, stores are going to be closed, and traffic is going
to be everywhere. The joy of being involved in a holiday that is very pleasant.
Everyone loves Mardi Gras. Having team spirit goes along with having a good time in New Orleans.
I guarantee one visit and the outcome will be different than the income. I think this is part of the
effects it has on people. So many positive actions and so much generosity normally will change ones
perspective. So why take away something that we see as being a good thing?
Why take away something they value as much as this? Have they not already lost enough? Mardi
Gras is a holiday that should remain the same and still be kept around. I feel so strongly about it still
being around because it has wonderful history behind it. The citizens of New Orleans did not fight
through the obstacles just to give up something they love so

Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird: Maycomb County 's Very Own Role Model Atticus is generally
different from many fathers. He is a man who believes in justice and equality. He is not only Jem
and Scout 's role model but Maycomb County 's as well. Harper Lee 's To Kill a Mockingbird takes
readers back in time to the 1930 's where they experienced what southern America was like during
"The Great Depression." Jem and Scout went through events that changed their lives forever. In this
novel, Atticus was a lawyer who was appointed to a case where he had to defend a black man who
goes by the name of Tom Robinson. Atticus tolerated the individuals around him; he did not use
violence and used honesty with children whenever curiosity took place, which made him a principal
role model of Maycomb County. Atticus is an essential role model of Maycomb County because he
is tolerant to people around him. He teaches his children about tolerance in numerous ways such as
being patient, understanding, and accepting other people. According to Atticus "You never really
understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin
and walk around in it." (30) In this situation, Scout is told not to read anymore because she is too
advanced in the class. Here, he demonstrates that you should put yourselves in Miss Caroline 's

Marketing Strategy For The Downtown Auburn Area Essay
Marketing Strategy:
Joyride
Background:
We are in the business of providing reliable micro–transportation to the downtown Auburn area.
There is no free on demand transportation in the area but many growing businesses.
A joyride in Auburn would provide thousands of people an easier opportunity to commute around
campus and downtown Auburn.
Over the next two years I plan to grow Joyride to a stable, household brand to students and
residence alike of the Auburn community. I plan to grow to Joyride to eight carts that would be
constantly and consistently used throughout the week. I six business in the downtown area would be
willing to sponsor a cart marketing package.
Specific target businesses would be: Skybar, Bourbon Street Bar, Quixotes, The Hound, Acre
Restaurant, Live Oaks, Avondale Bar & Tap Room, Moes Original, Little Italy Pizzeria, Pieology
Pizzeria, Auburn Draft house, 17–16 Bar, Ellie Shoe Boutique, and Locker Room.
There are many, many businesses that would receive the full personalized sales pitch from me but
those listed above are those that I think have the expendable income to support a marketing
endeavor.
I believe that Joyride can take over a significant market share of the on–demand transportation
service in the community since on–demand ride shares have just been legalized in Auburn as of just
this August and the only competition – Uber – is just now getting the ball rolling themselves with no
market competition.
I am compelled to start Joyride in

Wal-Mart’s Response to Hurricane Katrina
Wal–Mart's Response to Hurricane Katrina
So far in the American history, hurricane Katrina remains to be one of the most devastating
hurricanes to have ever been witnessed. Though preparation were already in place to counter its
effects, the storm's impact turned out to be one of the most unprecedented ever seen. This is even
notable from the way government agencies reacted to this disaster. It brought out the inefficiencies
and inadequacies of the emergency units both at the federal and state level. This is because these
governments' response standards to this disaster were far much below the threshold expected.
Government efforts could not match, and hence counter, the impacts of hurricane Katrina. This led
to loss of massive property ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is possible because Wal–Mart is expansive and has a global influence. This helps it to have lots
of information concerning anything of importance to them and their clients. Therefore using its
emergency department, Wal–Mart was able to monitor the storm as it approached the shores of the
Gulf coast using their highly computerized meteorological equipment. In addition to the storm
monitoring capabilities, this department is well equipped with emergency response facilities for
normal disasters.
Wal–Mart began response to this hurricane when the meteorological equipment indicated that the
initial signs of a storm were building up to a hurricane. This was when top level management began
having special interest on the findings of the emergency operations centre whereby the then
company's business continuity director shifted his operations to the centre. This was a clear sign of
how well Wal–Mart chain stores were getting prepared for this hurricane.
Wal–Mart CEO, H. Lee Scott, Jr., was in the forefront into getting ready to counter the impact of
Katrina. This is proven by the aspect of him giving direct authority to junior managers to make
sound decisions on the way forward into dealing with the hurricane. This simplified decision
making chain process and thus it saw the response become much quicker. Apart from giving
deciding powers to his juniors, the CEO guided the response process on a daily basis plan. This

saw other men and it was not as awkward as I initially thought it would be. Once the floats were
coming down from the street and I can see the women standing on top throwing beads into the
crowd. These floats were filled with different colors and the women were dressed in black. The
crowd was getting rowdy and I could barely stand still. Once the float came by I managed to catch

This February I attended the Asheville Mardi Gras Parade downtown as my cultural event. The
parade moved through the South Slope brewery district, and featured a wide array of floats,
costumes, and music. For example, the Ashevillage People had a float designed to emulate a
phoenix with flames surrounding it. I had a fulfilling time, and it was a very enjoyable way to spend
a few hours seeings the community of Asheville come together and see all the attractions. Asheville
is very well known for its wide range of arts and culture, and that really was apparent during the
Mardi Gras parade in the great variety of depictions all inspired from various regional cultures.

Ethics and Research
In 1932 the American Government conducted a study named the Tuskegee Syphilis study, this
project was administered by the US Health in Macon County, Alabama. The Government promises
600 plus African American citizens access to free medication and access to proper health care. This
study subjects was all tested positive for Syphilis when they enrolled for the study. However, these
subjects were denied medicine and were experimented on to help the Government to better
understand the Syphilis virus. The men in this study weren't aware of the research design and
possible danger to them and their families. (Carol Heintzelman 2003 p.1) This study went on for the

Tuskegee Syphilis Study didn't tell their subjects any particulars of the research and withheld
information from them. This study also brought up the concerns of 'the possibility that a person
might feel pressured to agree or might not understand what they agreeing to. (Heintzelman 2003
p.1). The subjects agreed to free medication, which proposes the question that they might not of
understood what that entails.
Another issue with this is that the Government Doctors also failed to obtain informed consent from
the subjects; they disregarded the human rights of the subjects and committed medical misconduct.
These Doctors failed to provide medication, Penicillin, which was deemed safe by this study, to the
subjects. According to Ogungbure, although the black participants in the Tuskegee Study had no
formal school education, the medical experts were not morally justified to deprive them of their
right to know about the dangerous procedures they would be subjected to, including the painful
spinal tap, unimaginable psychological stress, and constant body piercing. (Ogungbure 2011 p 84)

Tracing the Origins of Mardi Gras
The origins of Mardi Gras can be traced to medieval Europe, passing through Rome and Venice in
the 17th and 18th centuries to the French House of the Bourbons. From here, the traditional revelry
of "Boeuf Gras," or fatted calf, followed France to her colonies.
On March 2, 1699, French–Canadian explorer Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville arrived at
a plot of ground 60 miles directly south of New Orleans, and named it "Pointe du Mardi Gras" when
his men realized it was the eve of the festive holiday. Bienville also established "Fort Louis de la
Louisiane" (which is now Mobile) in 1702. In 1703, the tiny settlement of Fort Louis de la Mobile
celebrated America's very first Mardi Gras.
In 1704, Mobile established a secret society (Masque de la Mobile), similar to those that form our
current Mardi Gras krewes. It lasted until 1709. In 1710, the "Boeuf Gras Society" was formed and
paraded from 1711 through 1861. The procession was held with a huge bull's head pushed alone on
wheels by 16 men. Later, Rex would parade with an actual bull, draped in white and signaling the
coming Lenten meat fast. This occurred on Fat Tuesday.
New Orleans was established in 1718 by Bienville. By the 1730s, Mardi Gras was celebrated openly
in New Orleans, but not with the parades we know today. In the early 1740s, Louisiana's governor,
the Marquis de Vaudreuil, established elegant society balls, which became the model for the New
Orleans Mardi Gras balls of today.

Informative Essay On Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, is held on the day before the religious season of Lent
begins. This celebration takes place all around the world, but Louisiana is the only state in which
Mardi Gras is a legal holiday. Mardi Gras is not just something to watch, it's something to be a part
of. You can impersonate someone different and live a magical moment. It's a time for children and
adults to dress crazy in costumes with no judgments held against me. During this festival, people of
all ages races and religions come together to enjoy the beautiful atmosphere. Celebrating Mardi
Gras is a representation of many traditions that dates back to March 3, 1699.
I would love to visit New Orleans again, during carnival time. I vividly remember the first time I
ever explored Mardi Gras in New Orleans. When I arrived at the streets of the designated route, the

Monroeville Real Life
A Real Life Maycomb
Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mockingbird about a little Alabama town called Maycomb. What is
interesting is how Maycomb compares a lot to the town that Ms. Lee grew up in, Monroeville,
Alabama. The history of Monroeville and the way it was in the 1930s makes a reader wonder if Ms.
Lee took her hometown and made it the famous small town in the novel. By looking back to the
history of Monroeville's founding, the way it was in the 1930s, the way it almost mirrors Maycomb
and the way it is it today, one can see that Ms. Lee's used her experiences to create one of the most
famous towns in literature.
Monroeville, Alabama is located between Montgomery and Mobile. Before it was developed as a
town in 1831, it was called Burnt Corn Springs. During this time, there was major conflicts between

To Kill A Mockingbird Friendship Analysis
The definition of friendship is "the state of being a person attached to another by feelings of
affection or personal regard" (dictionary.com). In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, friendship
drives the interactions between the main characters that live in Maycomb, Alabama. Miss Maudie
Atkinson, a neighbor whom is kind to the children; Jem, Scout's older brother; and Arthur Radley, a
neighbor whom rarely comes out of his house and is kind, all have a friendship with Scout in
different ways that grows throughout the novel.
Miss Maudie and Scout have a friendship that starts very small at the beginning and progressively
grows throughout the novel. Dill and Jem play together and exclude Scout. She does not want to do
what they are doing and be reminded that she is not like them because she is a girl. Scout spends
time with Miss Maudie, a neighbor, "on pain of being called a girl, I spent most of the remaining
twilights that summer sitting with Miss Maudie Atkinson on her front porch" (Lee 42), instead of
playing with the boys. Miss Maudie and Scout spend a lot of time together. Miss Maudie treats
Scout like she is an equal to her and not a child. Scout enjoys spending time with Miss Maudie and
it makes her feel like she is still a tomboy. Miss Maudie bakes cakes for the children often and Scout
always receives her own little cake. When she finishes eating the cake, Miss Maudie and her have a

The Civil Rights Movement

  • 1. The Civil Rights Movement The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s was a series of sit–ins, boycotts, freedom rides, and marches. They were all used as ways to peacefully protest the fight for freedom and equality for all. These events took place to try and stop the discrimination and racism of all people but especially people of color. A major leader and influencer of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement was Martin Luther King Jr., whom along with many others, participated in many of the peaceful protests and marches put together by the people of the Freedom Movement. Martin Luther King Jr. brought new perspective to the whole fight for freedom through his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most recognized and well known advocates, but there were also many others that led protests and were involved in the movement. Some were into peaceful protests like Rosa Parks, but others wanted to take a more aggressive and loud approach like W.E.B. Du Bois. There were many historical events that shaped the Civil Rights Movement, and these events were the foundations for the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. The Montgomery bus boycotts, the freedom rides, and the Selma marches were some of the most memorable major contributing events to the series of protests in the fight for Civil Rights. The Montgomery bus boycotts were a series of protests against the Alabama public transportation system due to the unruly arrest of Rosa Parks. In Montgomery, Alabama the buses of ... • 3. Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee Brandi Ortiz English IV McCraw 2/24/15 Harper Lee: The One Hit Wonder "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird" (Lee. 72) Many teens all over the world have read or heard this iconic quote, whether by force because it was in the schools curriculum or for my fellow book worms it is a great novel to just lose yourself in. To Kill a Mockingbird, winner of the prestigious Pulitzer Prize and several other literary awards was written by Harper Lee in nineteen sixty. Famed author Nelle Harper Lee was born on the twenty–eighth of April, nineteen twenty–six in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lee was a daughter to an ill mother and Truman living with family friends after being abandoned by his own parents. It is believed by The Telegraph journal that Lee's past helped influence her growing interest in English Literature. To help feed her cultivating lust with such literature, after Lee graduated in 1944, she went to the all–female Huntingdon College in Montgomery. It is said that Lee "stood apart from the other students." (Biography.com) Rather than caring about fashion or dating, Lee focused on her studies and her own personal writing. Throughout Lee's college career, in Montgomery, she was a member of the literary honor society. After transferring to the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, Lee was characterized to be "a loner and an individualist." (Biography.com) Using her new title as motivation, Lee pursued her interest in writing by contributing to the school's newspaper and also a humor magazine, the Rammer Jammer, which she later became the editor of. Sadly after Lee was accepted into the university's law school she was forced, if one may say, to leave her post as editor of the Rammer Jammer. After much soul seeking and countless heart–to–heart conversations with her family, Lee dropped all interest in law and moved to New York City to follow her dream to become a writer. In nineteen forty–nine, a twenty–three year old Harper Lee arrived in New York City where she worked for the British Overseas Air ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. To Kill A Mockingbird Character Analysis To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee has been banned by some school districts since its publication in 1960, but it is also loved and treasured as a classic "full of wisdom" (Greitens) by millions. It is a story of learning to accept others, learning to compromise, learning to be uncomfortable in certain situations. Governor Greitens of Missouri writes to his sons about To Kill a Mockingbird: "part of the wisdom of the book is how the characters respond to... troubling words. But you can't appreciate their actions without feeling the discomfort. The author wanted you to wince. That kind of discomfort is how you grow....Discomfort is the warm–up act of growth." Lee helps Scout, Jem, Dill, and readers grow through the themes of social expectations, rumors, and racism. Scout likes to be seen differently and does not follow the social expectation of how women should act and dress in the 30's. She gets offended when her brother or anyone tells her she acts like a girl or refers to her as a girl. Scout likes being called a tomboy and that makes her unique. Scout says to the readers "I was not sure, but Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that's why other people hated them so..."(41). Jem said this to her because she though Atticus who is their father knew what they were playing and doing. So Jem was saying Scout was imagining that their father knew what was going on. Jem and everyone expects Scout to act like a girl, but she is not like that. Scout likes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee "The turning point in the process of growing up is when you discover the core of strength within you that survives all hurt" (Max Lerner). As children begin the process of growing up they have to go difficult times and periods in order to become an adult. Even though the events may hurt, they still gain strength from those events and when then find that strength, then they begin to truly grow up. This lesson is learned throughout Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. The story takes place in the 1930s in the small town Maycomb County, Alabama. The main character Scout starts the story out as a young girl who behaves as a tom–boy and she favors fighting rather than talking out her feelings. Scout's father Atticus is trying to teach her how to mature, but it is a long process. Her older brother Jem and their best friend Dill contribute toward her staying immature by messing around with the neighbors, specifically the Radley's. They become fascinated with the mysterious son, Arthur (Boo) Radley. But overtime, he becomes insignificant because of Atticus's job and the stress that it puts on the family after he takes a difficult case. As a result of this case Scout matures faster than normal because of the difficult material. Throughout the novel, Scout becomes more mature causing her to strengthen her compassion toward others, which shows how through growing up, people experience situations that cause them to understand the appropriate way to act. • 11. Go Set A Watchman By Harper Lee Synopsis Harper Lee's novel, Go Set a Watchman, tells the story of the 26–year–old Jean Louise as she gains awareness of her father's flaws and becomes a more independent and flexible person. During the novel's exposition, Jean Louise is on a train returning to her hometown, Maycomb, to visit her aging father, Atticus. Upon returning home, Jean Louise quickly gets into an argument with her aunt, Alexandra, over trivial matters. The two continue to bicker at each other until Atticus intervenes. While Jean Louise finds it extremely frustrating that her aunt is never able to understand her point of view, she finds comfort believing that Maycomb has remained the same since she last left. The narrative hook occurs when Jean Louise is informed of the changes that have taken place in Maycomb. A notable example is when Henry Clinton, Jean's old friend, informs her that her family sold Finch's Landing to a club. Jean is surprised at this and expresses her displeasure at her world changing by stating; " 'I just don't like my world disturbed without some warning...'" (Lee 75). Many of the changes don't hinder Jean, but she is still bothered by the fact that her world is changing without her knowledge. During the rising action, Jean Louise discovers a racist pamphlet owned by her father. She confronts Alexandra about it, and her aunt informs her that Atticus had brought it home from the citizen's council meeting. • 13. Alabama Civil War Journal Article Review #1 McCollum, C. THE NEGRO IN ALABAMA DURING THE CIVIL WAR The hardships faced by the slaves during and immediately following the Civil War were relatively the same as they had been prior to the war. During the war, the only thing that changed for some was their "Masters". The Governor of Alabama, by an act of 1861, was authorized to accept the services of slaves offered by certain slaveholders and in October the following year he was empowered to impress slaves between the ages of 18 and 45 to use as laborers, essentially making the state their masters. Amendments to the afore mentioned act in 1864 enabled the sheriff to enforce this act. The slaves were used for building defenses in the state as well as to take the place of whites who were enlisted and fighting the war. Some slaves accompanied their owners into battle and a few free blacks served as substitutes for whites. By 1865, the confederacy had decided to enlist slaves but the war ended before this plan could carried out. In 1863, the Union Army in Alabama, employed the first Negro troops to be used mainly for fatigue duty but they were used as line soldiers in a few minor battles. From January to October 1864, James T. Ayres a freeman from Illinois served as the recruiter in north Alabama. While here Ayres learned just how devoted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The King Cake tradition is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in 1870. The celebration of Mardi Gras came to North America from France where it had been celebrated since the Middle Ages. In 1837, a costumed group of revealers walked in the first documented "parade", but the violent behavior of maskers during the next two decades caused the press to call for an end to Mardi Gras. Fortunately, six New Orleanains who were former members of the Cowbellions, a group that presented New Years Eve parades in Mobile, AL, saved the New Orleans Mardi Gras by forming the Comus organization in 1857. Few parades are more iconic than the Mardi Gras parades of New Orleans. Many may view Mardi Gras as simply a giant parade of debauchery centering around revelry, alcohol, bead throwing and an excuse to bare skin. However, there are also those who do not know that there are many parades rather than one Mardi Gras Parade. • 29. Theme Of Innocence In To Kill A Mockingbird In the world, all children are born pure and innocent. It is through corrupting events that society slowly spoils their purity and rots their innocence over time. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee manifests the process of said corruption of innocence and purity through the growth of the three main child characters. Dill Harper Lee implies throughout her novel To Kill A Mockingbird that loss of innocence occurs, especially in troubling times, through Dill, Jem, and Scout. Lee uses the middle child, Dill, to convey the loss of innocence and purity. After Scout walks Dill out of the courtroom because he is crying, he says, "I don't care one speck. It ain't right, somehow it ain't right to do 'em that way. Hasn't anybody got any business talkin' like that– it just makes me sick" (266). Since he says it makes him sick, this is a hyperbole. This hyperbole shows Dill realizes that most of the white population of Maycomb is extremely judgemental and racist, and do not consider black people equal to white people. Tom Robinson did not stand a chance in this trial, and everyone knew it, even Atticus, and Dill is finally understanding what the world is really like. After Scout finds Dill under her bed, she narrates," He could add and subtract faster than lightning, but he preferred his own twilight world, a world where babies slept, waiting to be gathered like morning lilies. This is because these governments' response standards to this disaster were far much below the threshold expected. Government efforts could not match, and hence counter, the impacts of hurricane Katrina. This led to loss of massive property ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is possible because Wal–Mart is expansive and has a global influence. This helps it to have lots of information concerning anything of importance to them and their clients. Therefore using its emergency department, Wal–Mart was able to monitor the storm as it approached the shores of the Gulf coast using their highly computerized meteorological equipment. In addition to the storm monitoring capabilities, this department is well equipped with emergency response facilities for normal disasters. Wal–Mart began response to this hurricane when the meteorological equipment indicated that the initial signs of a storm were building up to a hurricane. This was when top level management began having special interest on the findings of the emergency operations centre whereby the then company's business continuity director shifted his operations to the centre. This was a clear sign of how well Wal–Mart chain stores were getting prepared for this hurricane. Wal–Mart CEO, H. Lee Scott, Jr., was in the forefront into getting ready to counter the impact of Katrina. This is proven by the aspect of him giving direct authority to junior managers to make sound decisions on the way forward into dealing with the hurricane. This simplified decision making chain process and thus it saw the response become much quicker. • 53. Krewe Of Cleopatra Essay The Krewe of Cleopatra is an all women crew that represents strength, beauty, and femininity. Earlier this month, I got to see the Cleopatra crew performed and it was an astonishing experience. I lived here in New Orleans for nine years, but I have never participated in a parade before. Even though it was a popular culture, I was always too lazy to go. This year I wanted to do something more than just staying home and play game, I wanted to go out and experience the atmosphere, but more specifically I wanted to experience the Mardi Gras atmosphere. I wanted to go to a parade that was not very crowded, so I picked the Krewe of Cleopatra. It was perfect for a beginner at going to parade. It was not packed with people and it was a somewhat famous parade. It was an all–female parade, so I felt a bit awkward for attending it, but I was mistaken. I arrived there an hour ahead in order to find a parking spot. There I saw other men and it was not as awkward as I initially thought it would be. Once the floats were coming down from the street and I can see the women standing on top throwing beads into the crowd. These floats were filled with different colors and the women were dressed in black. The crowd was getting rowdy and I could barely stand still. Once the float came by I managed to catch some. These beads were a signifier that has a special signified here in New Orleans and other places that celebrated Mardi Gras. By the end of the parade I was tired standing and following all the floats. • 55. Mardi Gras Essay This February I attended the Asheville Mardi Gras Parade downtown as my cultural event. The parade moved through the South Slope brewery district, and featured a wide array of floats, costumes, and music. For example, the Ashevillage People had a float designed to emulate a phoenix with flames surrounding it. I had a fulfilling time, and it was a very enjoyable way to spend a few hours seeings the community of Asheville come together and see all the attractions. Asheville is very well known for its wide range of arts and culture, and that really was apparent during the Mardi Gras parade in the great variety of depictions all inspired from various regional cultures. Western North Carolina has its own, unique way of life and I was glad to see Mardi Gras adapted to work with it so effortlessly and beautifully. Mardi Gras, also called Shrove Tuesday, is a series of carnival celebrations that begins on Three Kings Day every year and and culminates the day before Ash Wednesday (Mardi Gras History). • 59. Tracing the Origins of Mardi Gras The origins of Mardi Gras can be traced to medieval Europe, passing through Rome and Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries to the French House of the Bourbons. From here, the traditional revelry of "Boeuf Gras," or fatted calf, followed France to her colonies. On March 2, 1699, French–Canadian explorer Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville arrived at a plot of ground 60 miles directly south of New Orleans, and named it "Pointe du Mardi Gras" when his men realized it was the eve of the festive holiday. Bienville also established "Fort Louis de la Louisiane" (which is now Mobile) in 1702. In 1703, the tiny settlement of Fort Louis de la Mobile celebrated America's very first Mardi Gras. In 1704, Mobile established a secret society (Masque de la Mobile), similar to those that form our current Mardi Gras krewes. It lasted until 1709. In 1710, the "Boeuf Gras Society" was formed and paraded from 1711 through 1861. The procession was held with a huge bull's head pushed alone on wheels by 16 men. Later, Rex would parade with an actual bull, draped in white and signaling the coming Lenten meat fast. This occurred on Fat Tuesday. New Orleans was established in 1718 by Bienville. By the 1730s, Mardi Gras was celebrated openly in New Orleans, but not with the parades we know today. In the early 1740s, Louisiana's governor, the Marquis de Vaudreuil, established elegant society balls, which became the model for the New Orleans Mardi Gras balls of today. The earliest ... Miss Maudie Atkinson, a neighbor whom is kind to the children; Jem, Scout's older brother; and Arthur Radley, a neighbor whom rarely comes out of his house and is kind, all have a friendship with Scout in different ways that grows throughout the novel. Miss Maudie and Scout have a friendship that starts very small at the beginning and progressively grows throughout the novel. Dill and Jem play together and exclude Scout.
