The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s was a series of sit–ins, boycotts, freedom rides, and
marches. They were all used as ways to peacefully protest the fight for freedom and equality for all.
These events took place to try and stop the discrimination and racism of all people but especially
people of color. A major leader and influencer of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement was Martin
Luther King Jr., whom along with many others, participated in many of the peaceful protests and
marches put together by the people of the Freedom Movement. Martin Luther King Jr. brought new
perspective to the whole fight for freedom through his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. Martin
Luther King Jr. was one of the most recognized and well known advocates, but there were also
many others that led protests and were involved in the movement. Some were into peaceful protests
like Rosa Parks, but others wanted to take a more aggressive and loud approach like W.E.B. Du
Bois. There were many historical events that shaped the Civil Rights Movement, and these events
were the foundations for the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. The Montgomery bus

iconic quote, whether by force because it was in the schools curriculum or for my fellow book

Lee was a daughter to an ill mother and Truman living with family friends after being abandoned by
his own parents. It is believed by The Telegraph journal that Lee's past helped influence her growing
interest in English Literature.
To help feed her cultivating lust with such literature, after Lee graduated in 1944, she went to the
all–female Huntingdon College in Montgomery. It is said that Lee "stood apart from the other
students." (Biography.com) Rather than caring about fashion or dating, Lee focused on her studies
and her own personal writing. Throughout Lee's college career, in Montgomery, she was a member
of the literary honor society. After transferring to the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, Lee was
characterized to be "a loner and an individualist." (Biography.com) Using her new title as
motivation, Lee pursued her interest in writing by contributing to the school's newspaper and also a
humor magazine, the Rammer Jammer, which she later became the editor of. Sadly after Lee was
accepted into the university's law school she was forced, if one may say, to leave her post as editor
of the Rammer Jammer. After much soul seeking and countless heart–to–heart conversations with
her family, Lee dropped all interest in law and moved to New York City to follow her dream to
become a writer.

To Kill A Mockingbird Character Analysis
To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee has been banned by some school districts since its publication
in 1960, but it is also loved and treasured as a classic "full of wisdom" (Greitens) by millions. It is a
story of learning to accept others, learning to compromise, learning to be uncomfortable in certain
situations. Governor Greitens of Missouri writes to his sons about To Kill a Mockingbird: "part of
the wisdom of the book is how the characters respond to... troubling words. But you can't appreciate
their actions without feeling the discomfort. The author wanted you to wince.That kind of
discomfort is how you grow....Discomfort is the warm–up act of growth." Lee helps Scout, Jem,
Dill, and readers grow through the themes of social expectations, rumors, and racism.
Scout likes to be seen differently and does not follow the social expectation of how women should
act and dress in the 30's. She gets offended when her brother or anyone tells her she acts like a girl
or refers to her as a girl. Scout likes being called a tomboy and that makes her unique. Scout says to
the readers "I was not sure, but Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things,
that's why other people hated them so..."(41). Jem said this to her because she though Atticus who is
their father knew what they were playing and doing. So Jem was saying Scout was imagining that
their father knew what was going on. Jem and everyone expects Scout to act like a girl, but she is

"The turning point in the process of growing up is when you discover the core of strength within
you that survives all hurt" (Max Lerner). As children begin the process of growing up they have to
go difficult times and periods in order to become an adult. Even though the events may hurt, they
still gain strength from those events and when then find that strength, then they begin to truly grow
up. This lesson is learned throughout Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. The story takes
place in the 1930s in the small town Maycomb County, Alabama. The main character Scout starts
the story out as a young girl who behaves as a tom–boy and she favors fighting rather than talking
out her feelings. Scout's father Atticus is trying to teach her how to mature, but it is a long process.
Her older brother Jem and their best friend Dill contribute toward her staying immature by messing
around with the neighbors, specifically the Radley's. They become fascinated with the mysterious
son, Arthur (Boo) Radley. But overtime, he becomes insignificant because of Atticus's job and the
stress that it puts on the family after he takes a difficult case. As a result of this case Scout matures
faster than normal because of the difficult material. Throughout the novel, Scout becomes more
mature causing her to strengthen her compassion toward others, which shows how through growing
up, people experience situations that cause them to understand the appropriate way to act.

It was a sad time in the 1950's people were divided and set apart based on color of the skin. It was a
difficult time but you still see the family had to go by the rules and law in that time. The little girl

Go Set A Watchman By Harper Lee
Synopsis Harper Lee's novel, Go Set a Watchman, tells the story of the 26–year–old Jean Louise as
she gains awareness of her father's flaws and becomes a more independent and flexible person.
During the novel's exposition, Jean Louise is on a train returning to her hometown, Maycomb, to
visit her aging father, Atticus. Upon returning home, Jean Louise quickly gets into an argument with
her aunt, Alexandra, over trivial matters. The two continue to bicker at each other until Atticus
intervenes. While Jean Louise finds it extremely frustrating that her aunt is never able to understand
her point of view, she finds comfort believing that Maycomb has remained the same since she last
left. The narrative hook occurs when Jean Louise is informed of the changes that have taken place in
Maycomb. A notable example is when Henry Clinton, Jean's old friend, informs her that her family
sold Finch's Landing to a club. Jean is surprised at this and expresses her displeasure at her world
changing by stating; " 'I just don't like my world disturbed without some warning...'" (Lee 75). Many
of the changes don't hinder Jean, but she is still bothered by the fact that her world is changing
without her knowledge. During the rising action, Jean Louise discovers a racist pamphlet owned by
her father. She confronts Alexandra about it, and her aunt informs her that Atticus had brought it

THE NEGRO IN ALABAMA DURING THE CIVIL WAR The hardships faced by the slaves
during and immediately following the Civil War were relatively the same as they had been prior to
the war. During the war, the only thing that changed for some was their "Masters". The Governor of
Alabama, by an act of 1861, was authorized to accept the services of slaves offered by certain
slaveholders and in October the following year he was empowered to impress slaves between the
ages of 18 and 45 to use as laborers, essentially making the state their masters. Amendments to the
afore mentioned act in 1864 enabled the sheriff to enforce this act. The slaves were used for building
defenses in the state as well as to take the place of whites who were enlisted and fighting the war.
Some slaves accompanied their owners into battle and a few free blacks served as substitutes for
whites. By 1865, the confederacy had decided to enlist slaves but the war ended before this plan
could carried out. In 1863, the Union Army in Alabama, employed the first Negro troops to be used
mainly for fatigue duty but they were used as line soldiers in a few minor battles. From January to
October 1864, James T. Ayres a freeman from Illinois served as the recruiter in north Alabama.

The Black Belt is roughly 300 miles long and runs through Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and

FAT TUESDAY RUN All around Louisiana, the people celebrate Mardi Gras in early spring. Urban
cities such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge utilize fancy bright lighted parades, celebrity kings and
queens, and shiny beads to celebrate the festivities. Growing up in south Louisiana, I attended many
of these parades in the Big Easy. My grandparents would tell stories of rural Mardi Gras and the

We rode along on the country side. Farm land stretched along the road for as far as the eye could
see. The majority of the farms grew crops of rice . But this time of year, the farmers flood the rice
fields to farm another delicacy of Cajuns, crawfish. After a short ride, we reached the first farm. It
was a small quaint farm with a small white wooden house and an old wood barn. The farmer and his

In 1871, the tradition of choosing Queen of Mardi Gras was determined by who drew the prize

How Mass Incarceration Has Become The New Form Of Jim Crow...
Since the beginning of this great nation there has always been a racial caste systems due to slavery,
money, and greed. The End of slavery was after the civil war and enfourced through the 13th
Amendment. The loophole that was created that was the exception that criminals can be treated as a
involuntary servitude, which was noted in the U.S constitution. To speed things along you have the
slavery which transferred to convicted leasing to Jim Crow Era and now Mass Incarceration which
all has striped millions of the people, whom are in the lower caste systems, away from their families
similar to slavery. This paper focus on how mass incarceration has become the new form of Jim
Crow and slavery. The United Stated population represent 5% of the world population, but we have
25% of the world prisoners (NAACP). In the USA people of color represent 30% of the populations
but contributes to 60% of those who are imprisoned(NAACP). I hope that that this study will open
up conversations that the we are in a new form of Jim Crow and how Mass Incarceration should be
tentatively looked through and help come up with ways to make Mass Incarceration go away. As

What Is Mardi Gras Parade
1. What is this parade called, and where is it located? What is this parade about? What are they
celebrating in this parade? Few parades are more iconic than the Mardi Gras parades of New
Orleans. Many may view Mardi Gras as simply a giant parade of debauchery centering around
revelry, alcohol, bead throwing and an excuse to bare skin. However, there are also those who do not
know that there are many parades rather than one Mardi Gras Parade. These parades are deeply

Mardi Gras in Mobile, also known as Carnival, starts in November and officially kicks off on
twelfth night, which occured on January 6th. Though there are lots of private associations, such as
Krewes that hold their own masquerade balls and king cake parties, there are many free public
events to attend this season.
During the upcoming weeks, there will be at least one major parade that takes place in the city of
Mobile, the largest parades will take place on the last few days of Carnival, or Mardi Gras, season.

In the world, all children are born pure and innocent. It is through corrupting events that society
slowly spoils their purity and rots their innocence over time. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee
manifests the process of said corruption of innocence and purity through the growth of the three
main child characters. Dill Harper Lee implies throughout her novel To Kill A Mockingbird that loss
of innocence occurs, especially in troubling times, through Dill, Jem, and Scout. Lee uses the middle
child, Dill, to convey the loss of innocence and purity. After Scout walks Dill out of the courtroom
because he is crying, he says, "I don't care one speck. It ain't right, somehow it ain't right to do 'em
that way. Hasn't anybody got any business talkin' like that– it just makes me sick" (266). Since he
says it makes him sick, this is a hyperbole. This hyperbole shows Dill realizes that most of the white
population of Maycomb is extremely judgemental and racist, and do not consider black people equal
to white people. Tom Robinson did not stand a chance in this trial, and everyone knew it, even
Atticus, and Dill is finally understanding what the world is really like. After Scout finds Dill under
her bed, she narrates," He could add and subtract faster than lightning, but he preferred his own
twilight world, a world where babies slept, waiting to be gathered like morning lilies. He was slowly

New Orleans is known all over the world as a party town. Year round in New Orleans and in
southeast Louisiana there is some type of party or celebration being held. New Orleans has a unique

even family will turn on her. During the spring, Scout's brother Jem ruins the yard of their
conservative, old, neighbor, Mrs. Dubose. As a punishment, both of the Finch children are forced to
take care of her. When they are at her house, she rudely scoffs, "Your father's no better than the
niggers and trash that he works for!" (102) The author uses the word "trash" to show Scout that
some people who are very selfish use derogatory words like trash to display their feelings.

This February I attended the Asheville Mardi Gras Parade downtown as my cultural event. The
parade moved through the South Slope brewery district, and featured a wide array of floats,

the 17th and 18th centuries to the French House of the Bourbons. From here, the traditional revelry

On March 2, 1699, French–Canadian explorer Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville arrived at
a plot of ground 60 miles directly south of New Orleans, and named it "Pointe du Mardi Gras" when

Alabama's Confederate Flag Controversy The outlining issue here is the Confederate Flag and its
perception amongst the Alabama population. Debating on whether the flag should be taken down in
respect to citizen who are offended because of its close relation to the history of slavery in America.
The opposing side felt that it is a part of southern/the south's history, pride and should be honored.
Also, the opposing side feels that with other issues happening in the community; this debate is not
something that should take priority over what they believe were severe matters. The issue gained
attention in 1988 when thirteen black legislators were attempting to jump a fence to extract the
confederate flag from a top of the Alabama's capitol flagpole. Governor, at the time, Guy Hunt had
the men arrested and this arrest became national television news coverage. One contributing factor
for this incident gaining a high volume of attention, was Tom Reed. Tom Reed was one of the black
Tuskegee legislator, leader of the thirteen men and at the time current president of the NAACP
Alabama chapter. Tom Reed and Guy Hunter are the results of a dispute lasting over two decades.
Beforehand Governor George Wallace used the position of the flag as a symbolic opposition to the
Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy coming to Alabama back in the 1960s. While this act did not
