Important Quotes From Things Fall Apart
6."Among the Igbo the art of conversation is regarded highly, and proverbs are the palm oil with
which words are eaten." The use of language in the Igbo culture compared to Western culture is very
different. In America and most of Europe sentences tend to be direct and focus on getting a point
across. The Igbo however, use what we would consider inefficient small talk in every interaction so
much so that it is tradition. That is what diffuses tension when Okonkwo's father Unoka owes
money because they talk about friendly subjects, specifically through proverbs, and eat before
discussing how much Unoka owes. This helps to create a nonviolent interaction. Although this
contrasts to our own culture, it also holds a similarity. Even if it's not ... Show more content on

In Northeast Nigeria, where the book Things Fall Apart takes place, the terrorist group Boko Haram
is constantly causing the governrnent trouble. Whether it's when they kidnapped over 200 girls from
a school, kidnapped and trained child soldiers, or just this March attempted to bomb a Mosque. Not
to mention how Polio and malnutrition are indirectly being worsened by the group. However, the
similarity to 20th century Umuofia is uncanny. This is because both Boko Haram and the Igbo share
the same fight, that against western culture. Boko Haram actually translates to Western education is
a sin. Although it's not their full, official name, it is it's slang name and what the media uses.
Consisting of muslims the group has many differing beliefs to all of Western society, largely gender
related. Not all people share equal rights, another struggle that also occurs in the book. In
conclusion, Through this group, although they are terrorists and the Igbo were not, you can see that
people are still fighting against the same change in that area, even if it's under a different

Use Of Myths In Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart
Myths are used by primitive peoples to record their history to make sure it gets passed down to
future generations. Achebe incorporates folktales and myths into Things Fall Apart to show how
Igbo people use them as tools for teaching their children the history and values of their ancestors.
Many of these myths and fables draw themselves from the earth, sky, and nature, which the African
culture believes to be a central part of what it means to be human; to have a relationship with the
earth and the humans that were made from it. For Okonkwo, these folktales are symbols which
provide important values and morals in an effort to keep peace within his tribe and to keep their
place in Africa. Okonokwo tells masculine stories of bloodshed and violence, however Nyowe still
preferred the stories his mother told, which are more interesting and less violent. He remembers the
story his mother often told of the quarrel between the Earth and Sky. Sky withheld rain for years and
crops withered and the dead could not be buried in the stony Earth. Vulture was sent to Sky to ask
for forgiveness. Sky finally decided to forgive and gave Vulture rain wrapped in tree leaves to give
to Earth. On the way back home Vulture "pierced the leaves and the rain fell as it had never fallen
beforeˮ (53). This story illustrates the clan's dependence on nature for its survival, and how children
are naturally drawn to mother earth and all its wonders. According to the locust myth,

Okonkwo Fire Imagery Quotes
{Achebe clearly uses fire and locust imagery to give the readers a clear sign of the fate of the Ibo
people including their tragic hero, Okonkwo. {The fire imagery in the novel evolves to include
smoke and ashes, which also has powerful allegorical meaning. WHERE TO PLACE IN ESSAY
THOUGH? The fire imagery that pervades throughout the novel is often associated with Okonkwo,
and his offspring, during the course of his rises and falls in the novel. However, the fire imagery
does not only have an image of destruction; it also has an image of cleansing. In the beginning of the
novel, Achebe says that "Okonkwo's fame had grown like a bush–fire in the harmattan." This shows
that the clans acknowledged Okonkwo's skills without hesitance; yet, ... Show more content on

The fact that the locusts were large enough in number to break mighty tree branches speaks to the
missionaries' breaking of the religious, political, judicial, and social branches of the Ibo society. The
Umuofians naively underestimate the danger that the locusts can bestow upon them if they were
unheeded, in the same way, the Umuofians underestimate the overwhelming influence the
missionaries would have on their people. The description of the locusts as a "vast, hungry swarm"
by Achebe speaks to the greedy agenda of the missionaries, hidden under the innocent guise of
peacefully spreading Christianity to the primitive people of the Lower

Aylor Research Paper
Human activity has changed Aylor almost entirely. It has started as a swamp, but human activity has
changed the biome entirely from swampland to deciduous forest. The area around Aylor used to
have moist soil. Now, the soil is prone to dry periods. Some of the soil has cracks in it. There used to
be all sorts of vegetation and animal life, from dragonflies to cattail plants. Now, there is virtually no
cattail plants, but there is now grass and weeds such as dandelions. The animal life is now replaced
by various insects and the occasional bird. The ecosystem has changed so vastly that I, along with
my classmates, could not tell at all that Aylor used to be a swamp until we were told. In the

The Origin Myth Of Acoma Summary
To begin with, The Origin Myth of Acoma began with two female humans that were born
underground in a place known as; Sipapu. With them being born underground, there was no light but
they slowly began to become aware of each other in which slowly they grew up together.
Meanwhile, with being born underground they lacked an immense amount of sunlight, in which they
were introduced to a spirit named; Tsichtinako who was there to lead them and teach them different
skills in order to succeed. Tsichtinako told the two girls that if they followed her rules, she would be
able to help them get the nourishment and skills they needed in order to survive. Meanwhile, the
girls began to grow and strengthen after the teachings of Tsichtinako and with that one day was left
with a gift from the Spirit, who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each of the baskets held four different pine seeds, in which they were instructed to plant when they
were ready to see the light, and the trees would help them get to the light. Moreover, the girls each
planted their 4 seeds underneath the ground with them, and slowly but surely with time the trees
began to grow until one of the trees reached the top of the ground where light was given from
above! Sadly, the tree did not make a big enough hole and the girls had to look in the baskets again
to see if something significant was in each of them in order to make the whole bigger for them.
Correspondingly, a badger was a gift given within the basket in which they told the badger that if it
dug a big enough hole at the top of the tree that they would let it come to the top of the light with
them, and the hole that they were currently in could be its home where it could live peacefully.
Moreover, now that the hole was bigger Tsichtinako instructed them that in order to reach the light
they needed to find "locust" within the basket, in which they asked it to smooth the hole by

The Day Of The Locust Analysis
The Daphne is a type shrub that produces a sugary citrus scent that could fill up any room and even
a whole garden. Blooming in February, it produces tiny clusters of white to pink flowers containing
small berries. Sometimes called the romance plant, it is able to attract anyone that comes across it
just by its appearance or scent. However, looks can be deceiving because this plant is extremely
poisonous, containing toxins in all parts of the plant's body like the berries and leaves which if
ingested could cause extreme pain, comatose or sudden death. Just like this small shrub, many of the
characters in The Day of the Locust by Nathaniel West are not as they appear to be. West uses
illusion as a central theme to set the basis of the events regarding the character's true identity within
the novel. Each character being more different from the image they showcase than the last, they all
play a role in the overarching dichotomy that is displayed throughout the novel. The Day of the
Locust, mainly follows the lives of Tod Hackett, Faye Greene and Homer Simpson and the
characters that intertwine with them. The novel first introduces Tod Hackett who has recently
graduated and moved to Hollywood to become a costume designer. Tod judges the people around
him and his surroundings with a critical eye which inspires him to start working on The Burning of
Los Angeles. Then there's Faye Greener, who uses the men around her for her own personal gain.

Themes In The Day Of The Locust
Hollywood is putting on an act in more than just the movie business in Nathanael West's novel The
Day of The Locust. Things that are apparent can actually be deceptive and taking closer look at
some of these will reveal truths hidden inside Hollywood. There are signs losing their intended
meaning throughout the novel and are used to represent, or perform as, something entirely different
and maybe even something ironic. There are many examples of false representation in the
characters, inanimate objects, and overall themes in the novel and the main character, Tod Hackett,
may be the only one to take notice. The ability to separate living and acting is lost in the feigned
glamour of Hollywood. Perhaps the first and most glaring example of a performance, by people,
happens in the first chapter. Readers are introduced to the setting and right away, the omniscient
third person narrator points out the Hollywood residents' choice of clothing. None of the people that
are surrounding and walking by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Tyrolean hat was returning, not from a mountain, but an insurance office; and the girl in slacks and
sneaks with a bandanna around her head had just left a switchboard, not a tennis court," (Chapter 1).
In the next paragraph, these people who are pretending to be something that they're not are
described as masquerades by the author. The people of Hollywood may not even take a second look
at anyone dressed this way, but Tod has a different perspective. He takes notice right away; it could
be because he has a preconceived expectation of Hollywood. Or it could be because he has the
perspective of someone from another part of the country. From the beginning, the fallacy that is

Critical Analysis Of Okonkwo
Level Two Questions:
1. Okonkwo embodies all the ideal and heroic traits of the Igbo culture. He is strong, authoritative,
hardworking, and successful. The opening sentence states that "Okonkwo was well known
throughout the nine villages and even beyond" (Achebe 3). Okonkwo is great and famous because
of his "solid personal achievements" (Achebe 3). How does he achieve greatness and how is he
defined by his culture?
Okonkwo first achieved fame and recognition when he became the village's wrestling champion. At
eighteen years of age, he had "brought honor to his village" by defeating the seven–year champion.
By winning the wrestling match, Okonkwo demonstrates to his village his great strength and skill as
a warrior. After that his fame ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What did the locusts represent for the villagers in the coming future in relation to the British
Settlers? In the Igbo culture, the locusts invade their territory and attempt to destroy the crops trying
to be grown., along with the village's surrounding trees. The Igbo people eat the locusts, stopping
the harm to their crops. After the British invaded, Okonkwo went to the Oracle and said "the strange
men would break their clan and spread destruction among them... they were locusts" (Achebe 138–
139) This remark shows how the destroying of the yams and breaking of the trees is in direct
correlation with the British invasion. The British broke apart the Igbo culture, just how the locusts
had done in the past.
3. Okonkwo says "He has put a knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen
apart(Achebe 176)." because he is angry about the white men coming and spreading the Christian
religion. What are some reasons throughout the book that would point Chinua Achebe towards using
the title Things Fall Apart?
There are many reasons pointing towards the title of the book. Okonkwo starts from the bottom and
nothing in his life could go much worse. He did not have anything that could fall apart "Okonkwo
did not have the start in life which many young men usually had. He did not inherit a barn(Achebe
176)." The book proceeds to explain how Okonkwo builds up his life from nothings he "achieved
fame as the greatest wrestler

The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West
In The Day of the Locust, Tod Hackett undergoes an internal development relative to his migration.
Tod, an architect living in Connecticut, moves out to Hollywood to build scenery for movies. Yet,
once he moves, Tod is transformed into a lethargic, non–artist who can no longer create his own
drawings on paper. His surroundings drive these changes, as all characters in the novel are depicted
in a similar fashion. Tod becomes one of the grotesque as well, laughing at the disturbing rather than
the humorous. These new features signal Tod's incapacity to return to his old self, as he constantly
suffers from his migration. This comes full circle at the end of the novel when Tod is led away from
the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tod blames this on inertia, as it is becoming easier and more natural for him to do the same things
every day in LA. Only when an external force motivates him, like Abe Kusich's plans for moving
do, does Tod actually move anywhere. By the end of the novel, Tod wonders "if he himself [does
not] suffer from the ingrained, morbid apathy he [likes] to draw in others" (141). Here, Tod
coalesces with the other apathetic Californians; he becomes one of them. These moments culminate
in the police car scene when first, the policemen carry him by force to the theatre driveway, and then
carry him off in their car. Tod is carried and lifted in this instance; he performs none of the actions
but instead, is the receiver of them. Whereas in Connecticut, he took action in his life and studies, in
Los Angeles, he can do nothing but that which is done to him.
Tod's laughter after hearing the siren corresponds to the grotesque laughter that signals his ultimate
failure to recover. When first in LA, Tod views the houses around him as comical: architecture
lacking both beauty and romance. Yet, he finds it hard to laugh at these "truly monstrous" buildings,
instead exuding a sigh (61). The artist soon meets Abe Kusich, however, who first laughs "at his
own joke, using a high–pitched cackle more dwarflike than anything that [comes] from him" (63).
Abe represents the average Californian that Tod will

Hollywood Illusions In The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West, illusion verse reality is one of the
main themes of the novel. Hollywood is known for it's acting, but the town and everyone that inhibit
it seem to get carried away with trying to be something they aren't. Nothing is really indigenous in
Hollywood and everything is borrowed from another place. The houses have been designed to look

West's theme of illusion verse reality is shown with Faye always bouncing free to continue in her
fantasies, or Harry not knowing what he feels because clownishly playing his disguised self, the
Greeners show that for compulsive masqueraders little authentic life is possible. Faye and Harry
make the audience sympathetic for them. They just seem so pathetic at times that it's hard to not feel
bad for them. Tod, Homer and many of Faye's other suitors, went along with her poor acting because
she was beautiful yet pathetic. West says, "Raging at him, she was still beautiful. That was because
her beauty was structural like a tree's, not a quality of her mind or heart" (126). They all loved her
for what they saw on the outside, not her stuck up ways and wild stories. For all of the characters in
West's novel, they are acting on an every day basis without even realizing it. Harry acts in pain to
get attention. He pretends to need help from sympathetic people and then he tells them the crazy
stories of when he was "famous." His illusions are then backed up by his strong beliefs that he really
was a good actor. If we look at Faye we see how she also has a very strong and misconstrued idea of
reality. She believes she will one day be famous and in her everyday life, she acts like she already is.
She bosses the men around, has to be the center of attention, and uses people to pay for her and get

Faye's insincere discernment of love is a prevalent example of Hollywood's degenerative impact
upon those in search of materialistic success.
Todd's failed efforts to gain the love of Faye Greener characterize his downfall and failure to aspire
to his dreams and goals. While continuing to pay no attention to Todd, Faye Greener strives to
become famous among the movie scene in Hollywood. Her beauty and allure are only surpassed by
her rapaciousness and materialism. A dim cognizance of these traits lead her to blame herself for her
father's death. "I killed him" (122), Faye exclaims realizing that she had once informed him that if
he could not buy her what she wanted that she would leave him to find someone who could. As Faye
faces her guilt for her father's demise, she furthermore sacrifices her moral beliefs when she works
as a prostitute to afford her father's funeral. Miss Greener's life strays more distant from her dreams
as she finds herself being sucked deeper into the Hollywood world of sex, drugs, and deceit. Faye's
selfishness not only shatters her dreams, but correspondingly plays with the emotions and lives of
others. Her constant flirting leads to fights between Earle Shoop and Miquel, eventually
transforming two friends into loathing ememies. At the same time, she drives Homer Simpson to

How Does the Writer Create Tension and Convey Sympathy for...
How does the writer create tension and convey sympathy for Ikemefuna in this passage from the
novel? In his novel, Things Fall Apart, Achebe interconnects and associates events that occur in
Umuofia with emotions and feelings that hint at what is to come. A prime example of this is
Achebe's use of literary techniques in chapter seven, that create tension and convey sympathy for
Ikemefuna and conclude in his tragic death. At the beginning of the novel, we find out that
Ikemefuna has been given up to the Ibo tribe as a sacrificial compensation in order to prevent a war.

During the journey, a man tells the others to hurry up, and Achebe writes, "Thus the men of
Umuofia pursued their way, armed with sheathed matchets, and Ikemefuna, carrying a pot of
palmwine on his head, walked in their midst." The necessity to quicken their pace seems to add a
sense of urgency and stress upon everyone that has embarked on the journey, which is also another
way that tension is created. Furthermore, the mention of matchets hints at Ikemefuna's execution.
Also, the way that Achebe contrasts Ikemefuna from the rest of the men also seems to express the
doubt and uncertainty in Ikemefuna, which is opposite of the men, who already know what lies
ahead. In the moments leading up to his death, Ikemefuna is overwhelmed with thoughts of death,
although he tries to push them far out of his mind. Then Achebe shows Ikemefuna's apprehension
and fear by writing, "the man growled at him to go on and not stand looking back. The way he said
it sent cold fear down Ikemefuna's back...Why had Okonkwo withdrawn to the rear?"...And he was
afraid to look back." Furthermore, the reader feels an immense amount of sympathy because on
page 52, Achebe describes the close bond Ikemefuna feels he shares with Okonkwo by writing,
"Although he had felt uneasy at first, he was not afraid now. Okonkwo walked behind him. He could
hardly imagine that Okonkwo was not his real father." This shows the irony in the result of

Brainstorm Assignment
This assignment was definitely fun to brainstorm and create. I am going to start off with the boys
first. One of my favorites is, the farm–raised country boys. They drive big trucks, go hunting, and
say " yee–yee." I wouldn't say they are dumb or unintelligent, but sometimes whenever I have a
conversation with them I lose a few brain cells. My school also has a fair share of the jock boys.
They are the classic few who post the "rise and grind" gym selfies every day. Lastly, the few and the
rare, the intellectuals. They are truly a rare sighting at Watonga High School. Not only are they
greatly appreciated by the staff, but also me as they are great to have a conversation with.

Universal Symbolism in Things Fall Apart Essay
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is a novel written to highlight the intriguing lives and
misconceptions that are often identified with African culture. Achebe writes Things Fall Apart from
the African view, a foreign perspective that sees westerners as the outsiders and Africans as the
insiders. Focusing on a clan in lower Nigeria, Achebe profiles the clash of cultures that erupts when
white Christians colonize and spread their religious ideals. Achebe is able to make his book so
popular to the entire world because of his expert use of symbols like drums, locusts, and fire. These
common symbols in which drums represent the beat of all civilization, locusts represent invasion by
an outsider, and fire represents destruction, all aid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the novel progresses and focuses more on Okonkwo's exile, and the Europeans arrival, drums are
used less frequently. This reduction symbolizes the loss of culture that Umuofia gradually
experiences due to outside forces. Because drums are universally known for celebration and culture,
Achebe uses this symbol to better connect with his readers and to establish his story on humanity.
While drums represent the culture of the African clan, Achebe also begins to incorporate the symbol
of locusts, which represent the white men coming. Achebe commonly uses the symbol of locusts to
represent and foreshadow the white men coming, and the clash of opposing cultures that takes place.
When the locusts arrive in Umuofia the entire clan is full of joy because locusts are delicious to eat,
however bad for the crops. Though they arrived after the harvest season had ended, this positive and
negative parallel represents the same questions that are asked when colonizers arrive to the society.
When the locusts first arrive in Umuofia, Achebe explains, "the locusts did descend. They settled on
every tree on every blade of grass; they settled on the roofs and covered the bare ground. Mighty
tree branches broke away under them" (129). The repetition of

Along with its life of crime Hollywood has also had a major influence on public expectations.
Hollywood has become the standard of comparison within the American society for clothing,
education, lifestyles, and so on. Various individuals believe that Hollywood only portrays the truth
and most realistic depictions of life they do not think that Hollywood would be so inclined to
simulate inaccuracies of reality to the American people, but as John Springer points out, Nathanael

Most people are guilty of wishing that they could find their own Leonardo DiCaprio with whom to
fall in love on a boat destined to sink, or even wishing they had a friend like Samwise Gamgee from
the film production of The Lord of the Rings, always urging his friends to carry–on through difficult
times and willing to help them to do so. When people submerge into these fantasies, they tend to
forget reality; while a woman may expect a man to give his life for her after only five days, it
probably will never happen. Same goes for the unrealistic friend expectation; nearly all friends have
their own problems with which to deal–they do not have time to carry their best friend up a

Swarms Of Terror By Lauren Tarshis
Chomp, Chomp, Chomp. All of the food was gone. The food was devoured by an unexpected animal
a type of Grasshopper called Locust. The article "Swarms of Terror" by Lauren Tarshis is about how
locust destroyed and devoured plains and prairies and devastated pioneers. In the article"Swarms of
Terror" by Lauren Tarshis it describes what the the locust look like. One example was "The cloud
was enormous, filling the sky as far as anyone could see". The cloud was almost like a galaxy full of
stars. The edges sparkled; it seemed to stretch out forever. As the cloud came closer, the day turned
dark. It looked like gravel when the sun hit it. Another one was "It was a grasshopper, greenish

they ate the crops and food that people needed to survive". All the food was gone nothing left. In

fields". All the wheat fields were gone, meaning that they could not sell any of their food, so they
could pay a doctor if one of them got sick. Not only those two but there is "By the next morning the
lush green and gold wheat field had been chewed down to stubble". No more fields to play in after
the kids were done with chores, There was nothing. The last sentence that Lauren Tarshis is "With

I Grew Up On The World With Drought
I grew up on the whimsical stories of my mother. I dreamt of the clever tortoise and the bird who
dared to challenge the world. I especially loved one story my mother often told, a tale recounting the
quarrel between the Earth and the Sky. The Sky withheld water for seven years, and it took the
pleading song of the Vulture, on behalf of the desiccated Earth, for rain to fall once more. In my life,
my father Okonkwo would be cold–hearted Sky. Only, in this story, the Sky did not plague the world
with drought; its rain never ceased, not even when the waters blanketed the Earth in its cold,
shadowy depths. My father hated all the things that were soft, and he was inexplicably infuriated
with me. Attempting to discipline me into masculinity, he constantly beat and nagged me for my
inherent laziness and femininity. His rage was tumultuous as a tempest, and his displeasure was like
a torrent of water, unending and unforgiving. Miraculously, the rainfall ceased with the arrival of
Ikemefuna. He came to Umuofia as a compensation, and the clan saw him as a mere sacrifice. To
me, however, Ikemefuna was my surrogate elder brother. He taught me things my father's violence
never could and was worldly in way I could never be. He, too, told me folktales from the distinct
culture of another clan, and every story he spun was gold, forever precious and rosy in my memory,
even in the moments of my last breath.
Blazing and bright, Ikemefuna was like the sun in every sense of the word. He was

Hyponential Growth
Exponential growth is shown by bacteria that is grown in a lab. While Logistic growth is shown by
populations of animals. 2. For locusts, Predation and Competition for Resources are the two main
density–dependent regulations, because grasshoppers are mostly near the bottom of the food chain,
while other predator like hawks are near the top of the food chain. As per all living beings, locusts
also need to eat, so resources are also another reason of the density–dependent problem. 3. The
otters directly depend on the kelp, as is the kelp goes down, the number of otters present also go

Theme Of Symbols In Things Fall Apart And The Poisonwood...
Symbols have a major impact on both Things Fall Apart and The Poisonwood Bible. They help
display the story in different perspectives and help us understand concepts we don't always pick up
on when first reading the novels. These symbols reveal more in depth detail about the themes of
each novel as well as add to the development of characters. Some major symbols seen in Things Fall
Apart are the locusts which make a reference to the Bible and are a metaphor for the coming
missionaries, Okonkwo's father, Unoka, who symbolizes Okonkwo's failures, and fire which
symbolizes destruction. The major themes in The Poisonwood Bible are the snake which represents
a character from the bible, Methuselah who symbolizes the fate of the Congo and the poisonwood
tree which symbolizes Nathan's mistakes.
The first symbol we see in Things Fall Apart is Okonkwo's father, Unoka. Unoka was a failure all
throughout Okonkwo's childhood, he was lazy and a coward. He is a significant symbol in the novel
because he is the reason why Okonkwo is the way he is. Okonkwo doesn't want to be a failure ...

relates to the theme because although the "Jesus is like your local tree which can cause pain in your

the loss of his daughter because of his arrogance and determination to stay and continue his mission

Causes Of War In Ray Bradbury's 'Martian Chronicles'
The Earth's beautiful green lands and ocean blue water suddenly explode with great booms in bright
light. Then, blackness follows, completely enveloping the whole planet, bringing us our last
moments of breath, until all is silent and Earth is empty. Bradbury predicts that the Earth will soon
be annihilated due to the human race's heavy dependence on technology. The instruments we use
today shines a light on the origin of weapons and how terrifying it can be. With this, engaging in
war using technology as a weapon may cause devastating casualties more than ever. Similarly, The
Martian Chronicles written by Bradbury illustrates how humans leave Earth because it was
destroyed by the war. With the intention of conquering Mars, humans travel a ... Show more content

Corresponding to Bradbury's predictions of the future, it's been commonly argued that the
advancement in technology will bring permanent results that will be passed on in history as "The
Great Extinction" or "Humanity's extinction".
Humans have always held an insatiable desire for creating machinery that will improve the lives of
many, however, it is also what can potentially lead to the birth of weapons of war. In the chronicle,
"The Locusts," written by Bradbury, depicts the time when humans came to Mars in rockets. The
rockets "set the bony meadows afire, turned rock to lava, turned wood to charcoal, transmitted water
to steam" and "made sand and silica into green glass which lay like shattered mirrors reflecting the
invasion" (Bradbury 78). Instead of accepting the way the new land is, the humans shape the
mountains into familiar landscapes which is detrimental to Mars. Bradbury describes that just like
swarms of locusts, humans arrive on Mars from Earth. As a matter of fact, locusts are grasshoppers
that cause damage to the crops. If Bradbury meant that we are "the locusts," it would point out that
we are damaging the environment on Mars by building

Hollywood and Nathaniel West's The Day of the Locust Essay
Hollywood and Nathaniel West's The Day of the Locust Works Cited Missing Although set in the
1930s, Nathanael West's The Day of the Locust ironically resembles contemporary Hollywood.
Within the glamorous setting of Hollywood, West's characters take on multiple roles instead of
assuming individual personalities. They put on and remove these imaginary personality masks,
similar to those in the Commedia dell'Arte, to exhibit a range of emotions that only their character
type would exhibit. Consequently, West's characters are trapped in this restrictive atmosphere,
especially at the end of the novel when they become part of a collective mob. In these manners, the
characters in The Day of the Locust exhibit qualities akin to modern actors, ... Show more content

In fact, Webb notes that today, only one major studio still exists in the city, as most back lots have
turned into offices that coordinate filming activities elsewhere. This small fact proves that
"Hollywood has always been a concept as much as a place" (xi), a symbol people reference for the
movie industry, no matter where the movies were actually produced. Hollywood cinema also
produces its own realities on the big screen. As Cecil B. De Mille. Goldfish and Samuel Goldfish
claimed during the production of the first motion picture, "when real life doesn't fit a preconceived
image, create another reality" (xi). Since that 1913 statement, Hollywood has fostered this type of
reality–making that results into an escape for its audiences. Aside from the physical escape of
traveling to the movies or Blockbuster in order to view these films, audiences are also invested in
the characters they view on screen. However, Webb informs the public that "what appears on the
screen is a stylized version of real life (or a plausible vision of imaginary worlds) that is made
possible by the prolonged collaborative effort of hundreds, working in support of a celebrated few"
(3). The "reality" of the cinema lies in producers, directors, actors, back–lots, etc. involved in its

The Rise And Fall Of A Time Of Wine And Plenty When Joel...
Israel has experienced the rise and fall of three empires and is in a time of wine and plenty when
Joel emerges as prophet. As prophet, Joel's role is to awaken the people from apathetic living and
give them insight into what is on the horizon for them if they continue in their current state. Joel
highlights the dichotomy of the elders of the land and the inhabitants of the land, throughout the
book. This type of class dichotomy comes from a structuring of society that disregards the order
God first set into motion for the people of Israel in the wilderness. The tabernacle at that time acted
as the center of society and caused the inhabitants to see one another when they looked to it. The
elders and leaders had a connection to God that caused them to serve the people through education,
healthcare and settling disputes. However, during Joel's time, temple theology is strong and rather
than servant leaders, it appears the elders, or leaders of the land have economic advantage over the
people and the now temple, is not serving its purpose. Joel understands the negative effects this has
on the people and will have on the nation, but lacks revelation that could lead to reform or change.
He reads the signs, and even the words but lacks understanding of the way God would bring resolve
to the issues Israel faces. Joel has good intentions, but many of his suggestions seem to be similar to
common answers dealt out by the religious system, and could be qualified in the end more along

The Is A Giant Mass Brawl That Happens Every Year
Takanakuy is a giant mass brawl that happens every year during Christmas in the Andes. It's a
centuries old tradition that was originally designed to settle legal disputes in the city of Santo
Tomas. According to Maximo and Alejandra Ttico (2012), The basic idea of Takanakuy is that men,
women, and children save their accumulated conflicts throughout the year to solve all differences on
Christmas day despite race or monetary income. Instead of fighting in that very moment they save it
for Christmas where everyone in the village meet up wrap their fists and commence to beat each
other (pg. 151). I found this as the perfect opportunity to talk about my culture, which is somewhat
virtually unknown in American society. Many aspects of racism, sexism, and monetary inequality
that we touched in our class readings still exist in many indigenous cultures till this day. And I
believe this event works well among my culture. A Christmas party tradition should be synonymous
with love, unity and fellowship, but here it's the perfect opportunity for residents of the area to
provide solutions to their legal problems, love problems, petty rivalries and conflicts, which are
accumulated throughout the year to be solved with a bare knuckle fight. This ancient tradition dating
back to the pre–Incan period is one of the most important cultural events of the Andean calendar. It
is known for not having any mechanism to enforce justice and there is almost no police control. The

Analysis Of Miss Lonelyhearts And The Day Of The Locust
In Miss Lonelyhearts and The Day of the Locust, each character experiences suffering, and in each
case the suffering is ridiculed. Schadenfreude is a basic human experience; human beings do find
humor in other's misfortune. Society is so accustomed to the feeling of schadenfreude that hardly
anyone knows exactly where it comes from or how distasteful it is. Society feeds schadenfreude of
physical pain by letting it reside throughout comedy. Almost every comedic movie, show, song,
sketch or any other form of entertainment is cluttered with people being hurt. Harry Greener's clown
show in The Day of the Locust is completely centered around his pain. "'When he stands up, the
audience, which failed to laugh at his joke, laughs at his limp, so he continues lame for the rest of
the act,'" (West, The Day 78). The entire comedy genre thrives off of schadenfreude. Perhaps this is
because the audience knows that the subject is not truly hurt, so it becomes funny to see people such
as Curly, Moe, and Larry beat each other. Perhaps it is because people use laughter as a shield
against pain. When people see pain they laugh to make it seem that it did not actually hurt. It is a
product of empathy for him who was hurt. Laughter serves to camouflage embarrassment which is
included in empathy. The ways in which characters receive injuries are usually embarrassing, and
the audience feels the embarrassment causing them to laugh.
Schadenfreude is embedded in human emotions such as envy,

Hollywood and tells the story of Tod Hackett, a young artist. Tod moves to California in the hope of
finding inspiration for his next painting and ends up working for a Hollywood studio. It is here
where Tod ends up interacting with the strange people on the fringes of the film industry. The novel

Analysis of The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West
Nathanael West's The Day of the Locust tells the story of people who have come to California in

success in

One example of this is a scene when Todd is getting ready to go out, but "his eyes [keep] straying to

Faye. This compulsion eventually leaves Todd with feelings of failure and breaks him down. Faye
"could only love a handsome man and would only let a wealthy man love her" (67). Faye constantly
disregards Todd's feelings for her, slowly crushing his dream life. Faye's insincere discernment of
love is a prevalent example of Hollywood's degenerative impact upon those in search of
materialistic success.
As Faye

The American Dream In The Day Of The Locust
"It's called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it." –George Carlin. In the
novel, The Day of the Locust, Nathanael West is able to depict the falsity behind the American
Dream. The dream is dangerous. West views Hollywood's version of the phenomenon known as the
American Dream as a myth that many people fall victim to, which is shown through the recurring
themes of despair in the novel.
Through the characters of The Day of the Locust, Nathaniel West is able to illustrate the dangers of
the Hollywood dream. According to Christenson "The virtues that were once associated with the
dream have all but disappeared from the societies depicted in American literature as the quest for
fame, fortune, and power has replaced them." (2). Each character in the novel has a different
background, but ultimately came to California for a better life. They are blinded by their desires,
with each of them desiring something they can't have. In pursuit of this fictitious lifestyle, each
character has to put on a certain persona. They all are a representation of a failed attempt at
accomplishing the Hollywood dream. When people think of the American Dream, most think of the
good that arises with it. They don't consider the hardships and obstacles one must overcome. Many
immigrants come to America in hopes of accomplishing their dreams and aspirations, and if they
can't, maybe their children can. Haspel debates how "The U.S. has changed drastically in the last
several decades. The middle class, which was the heart of the American Dream, is dwindling, and
the disparity of wealth among social classes continues to grow." (41) This defends the popular
phrase "The rich get richer while the poorer get poorer." In essence, the American Dream can be
viewed as the aim to climb the economic ladder. As the economic gap between the different social
classes grow, it becomes harder for certain groups to see the American Dream as an attainable goal.
The American Dream entails a variety of opportunities, and it is hard for minorities to grasp such
opportunities with limited resources. Haspel also debates that "Another issue contributing to the
decay of the American Dream is the country's changing family

submarine. Marcus, Dom, Anya, Sam, and Jace join up with Dizzy Wallin to find a submarine
capable of the journey. Dom leads them to a town called Mercy that contains enough Imulsion to
fuel the sub, at the same time discovering that humans are able to become Lambent as well. Dom
sacrifices himself to save the others from the Lambent horde, forcing them to find Imulsion at the
city of Char, run by Stranded leader Griffin. Even though they encounter Myrrah, Delta gains the

Joel And Mr Longfellow Analysis
Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the
former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the
latter rain in the first month. Joel 2:23
My younger brother, Joe would use Mr. Longfellow's quote whenever our families made plans that
didn't quite work out the way we had designed them too. However, he would put his own little twist
on it... as he looked at us and with his funny, little smirk say, "Into every life a little rain must fall!"
However, this is not the rain that the prophet Joel talks about!
My friends, this reminds me of the promises, written by the prophet Joel who prophesied that in the
last days God's Spirit would once again fall ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, fire and pillars of smoke. Joel 2:28–
30
Joel had called the judgement of God in the locust plague, "the day of the Lord," but now he sees
another "day of the Lord" coming... "great and terrible." It will be signaled by portents in the sky
and signs on the earth for all to see, and the whole earth will be summoned for judgement: "I will
gather all the nations and bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat, and I will enter into
judgement with them there!" Joel 3:2
But, before this cataclysmic judgement occurs, God's promises that a great outpouring of His Spirit
will happen: "I will pour out my spirit on all flesh." Joel 2:28 Joel gives us a vibrant picture of what
it looks like when the rains come, saying in effect, "Wake up, church... look around you... the
"Harvest Rains" are on the way... and it's beginning to rain, the Lord has made the clouds bright and

Important Quotes From Things Fall Apart

  • 1. Important Quotes From Things Fall Apart 6."Among the Igbo the art of conversation is regarded highly, and proverbs are the palm oil with which words are eaten." The use of language in the Igbo culture compared to Western culture is very different. In America and most of Europe sentences tend to be direct and focus on getting a point across. The Igbo however, use what we would consider inefficient small talk in every interaction so much so that it is tradition. That is what diffuses tension when Okonkwo's father Unoka owes money because they talk about friendly subjects, specifically through proverbs, and eat before discussing how much Unoka owes. This helps to create a nonviolent interaction. Although this contrasts to our own culture, it also holds a similarity. Even if it's not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Northeast Nigeria, where the book Things Fall Apart takes place, the terrorist group Boko Haram is constantly causing the governrnent trouble. Whether it's when they kidnapped over 200 girls from a school, kidnapped and trained child soldiers, or just this March attempted to bomb a Mosque. Not to mention how Polio and malnutrition are indirectly being worsened by the group. However, the similarity to 20th century Umuofia is uncanny. This is because both Boko Haram and the Igbo share the same fight, that against western culture. Boko Haram actually translates to Western education is a sin. Although it's not their full, official name, it is it's slang name and what the media uses. Consisting of muslims the group has many differing beliefs to all of Western society, largely gender related. Not all people share equal rights, another struggle that also occurs in the book. In conclusion, Through this group, although they are terrorists and the Igbo were not, you can see that people are still fighting against the same change in that area, even if it's under a different ... • 3. Use Of Myths In Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart Myths are used by primitive peoples to record their history to make sure it gets passed down to future generations. Achebe incorporates folktales and myths into Things Fall Apart to show how Igbo people use them as tools for teaching their children the history and values of their ancestors. Many of these myths and fables draw themselves from the earth, sky, and nature, which the African culture believes to be a central part of what it means to be human; to have a relationship with the earth and the humans that were made from it. For Okonkwo, these folktales are symbols which provide important values and morals in an effort to keep peace within his tribe and to keep their place in Africa. Okonokwo tells masculine stories of bloodshed and violence, however Nyowe still preferred the stories his mother told, which are more interesting and less violent. He remembers the story his mother often told of the quarrel between the Earth and Sky. Sky withheld rain for years and crops withered and the dead could not be buried in the stony Earth. Vulture was sent to Sky to ask for forgiveness. Sky finally decided to forgive and gave Vulture rain wrapped in tree leaves to give to Earth. On the way back home Vulture "pierced the leaves and the rain fell as it had never fallen beforeˮ (53). This story illustrates the clan's dependence on nature for its survival, and how children are naturally drawn to mother earth and all its wonders. According to the locust myth, ... • 5. Okonkwo Fire Imagery Quotes {Achebe clearly uses fire and locust imagery to give the readers a clear sign of the fate of the Ibo people including their tragic hero, Okonkwo. {The fire imagery in the novel evolves to include smoke and ashes, which also has powerful allegorical meaning. WHERE TO PLACE IN ESSAY THOUGH? The fire imagery that pervades throughout the novel is often associated with Okonkwo, and his offspring, during the course of his rises and falls in the novel. However, the fire imagery does not only have an image of destruction; it also has an image of cleansing. In the beginning of the novel, Achebe says that "Okonkwo's fame had grown like a bush–fire in the harmattan." This shows that the clans acknowledged Okonkwo's skills without hesitance; yet, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that the locusts were large enough in number to break mighty tree branches speaks to the missionaries' breaking of the religious, political, judicial, and social branches of the Ibo society. The Umuofians naively underestimate the danger that the locusts can bestow upon them if they were unheeded, in the same way, the Umuofians underestimate the overwhelming influence the missionaries would have on their people. The description of the locusts as a "vast, hungry swarm" by Achebe speaks to the greedy agenda of the missionaries, hidden under the innocent guise of peacefully spreading Christianity to the primitive people of the Lower ... • 7. Aylor Research Paper Human activity has changed Aylor almost entirely. It has started as a swamp, but human activity has changed the biome entirely from swampland to deciduous forest. The area around Aylor used to have moist soil. Now, the soil is prone to dry periods. Some of the soil has cracks in it. There used to be all sorts of vegetation and animal life, from dragonflies to cattail plants. Now, there is virtually no cattail plants, but there is now grass and weeds such as dandelions. The animal life is now replaced by various insects and the occasional bird. The ecosystem has changed so vastly that I, along with my classmates, could not tell at all that Aylor used to be a swamp until we were told. In the beginning of the year in August, the grass was ... • 9. The Origin Myth Of Acoma Summary To begin with, The Origin Myth of Acoma began with two female humans that were born underground in a place known as; Sipapu. With them being born underground, there was no light but they slowly began to become aware of each other in which slowly they grew up together. Meanwhile, with being born underground they lacked an immense amount of sunlight, in which they were introduced to a spirit named; Tsichtinako who was there to lead them and teach them different skills in order to succeed. Tsichtinako told the two girls that if they followed her rules, she would be able to help them get the nourishment and skills they needed in order to survive. Meanwhile, the girls began to grow and strengthen after the teachings of Tsichtinako and with that one day was left with a gift from the Spirit, who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each of the baskets held four different pine seeds, in which they were instructed to plant when they were ready to see the light, and the trees would help them get to the light. Moreover, the girls each planted their 4 seeds underneath the ground with them, and slowly but surely with time the trees began to grow until one of the trees reached the top of the ground where light was given from above! Sadly, the tree did not make a big enough hole and the girls had to look in the baskets again to see if something significant was in each of them in order to make the whole bigger for them. Correspondingly, a badger was a gift given within the basket in which they told the badger that if it dug a big enough hole at the top of the tree that they would let it come to the top of the light with them, and the hole that they were currently in could be its home where it could live peacefully. Moreover, now that the hole was bigger Tsichtinako instructed them that in order to reach the light they needed to find "locust" within the basket, in which they asked it to smooth the hole by plastering ... Two geologist, Hank Scott and Arturo Ramos are there to investigate and study it. As they are driving through, they end up in San Lorenzo where the village priest explains to them about the strange occurrences in the city. For one, these giant scorpions only came out at night. This incorrect, scorpions appear at night as well as during the day. They occasionally take shelter in the shade to escape a potentially harsh climate, but it's possible for them to be out in the daylight. On a positive, the scorpions were depicted anatomically correct. They had correct chelae, or pedipalps, they use for prey capture. Also in a close up their chelicerae were also accurate. Most importantly to the film, they had the stingers at the end of their tails for defense. The scorpions in the film live in an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

And what was up with her stew last night? None of this made any sense. Feeling conflicted Phoebe went ahead and started getting ready for the day. Changing out of her nightgown into a shift, petticoat, stays, stomacher, and finally her undress. (Undress every day working clothes.) After she was finished she checked on Jeffery who was still fast asleep. Phoebe crept into the hallway gently stepping on squeaky wooden floor broads. • 15. The Day Of The Locust Analysis The Daphne is a type shrub that produces a sugary citrus scent that could fill up any room and even a whole garden. Blooming in February, it produces tiny clusters of white to pink flowers containing small berries. Sometimes called the romance plant, it is able to attract anyone that comes across it just by its appearance or scent. However, looks can be deceiving because this plant is extremely poisonous, containing toxins in all parts of the plant's body like the berries and leaves which if ingested could cause extreme pain, comatose or sudden death. Just like this small shrub, many of the characters in The Day of the Locust by Nathaniel West are not as they appear to be. West uses illusion as a central theme to set the basis of the events regarding the character's true identity within the novel. Each character being more different from the image they showcase than the last, they all play a role in the overarching dichotomy that is displayed throughout the novel. The Day of the Locust, mainly follows the lives of Tod Hackett, Faye Greene and Homer Simpson and the characters that intertwine with them. The novel first introduces Tod Hackett who has recently graduated and moved to Hollywood to become a costume designer. Tod judges the people around him and his surroundings with a critical eye which inspires him to start working on The Burning of Los Angeles. Then there's Faye Greener, who uses the men around her for her own personal gain. Her victims include Tod and another ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"I can not believe I am here," she thinks to herself. "It's a wonderland, a paradise in fact. I love it here." Serena still facing the ceiling begins to slowly stray away from her previous spot in the water as the dolphins follow along side her. • 19. Themes In The Day Of The Locust Hollywood is putting on an act in more than just the movie business in Nathanael West's novel The Day of The Locust. Things that are apparent can actually be deceptive and taking closer look at some of these will reveal truths hidden inside Hollywood. There are signs losing their intended meaning throughout the novel and are used to represent, or perform as, something entirely different and maybe even something ironic. There are many examples of false representation in the characters, inanimate objects, and overall themes in the novel and the main character, Tod Hackett, may be the only one to take notice. The ability to separate living and acting is lost in the feigned glamour of Hollywood. Perhaps the first and most glaring example of a performance, by people, happens in the first chapter. Readers are introduced to the setting and right away, the omniscient third person narrator points out the Hollywood residents' choice of clothing. In the next paragraph, these people who are pretending to be something that they're not are described as masquerades by the author. The people of Hollywood may not even take a second look at anyone dressed this way, but Tod has a different perspective. • 21. Critical Analysis Of Okonkwo Level Two Questions: 1. Okonkwo embodies all the ideal and heroic traits of the Igbo culture. He is strong, authoritative, hardworking, and successful. The opening sentence states that "Okonkwo was well known throughout the nine villages and even beyond" (Achebe 3). Okonkwo is great and famous because of his "solid personal achievements" (Achebe 3). How does he achieve greatness and how is he defined by his culture? Okonkwo first achieved fame and recognition when he became the village's wrestling champion. At eighteen years of age, he had "brought honor to his village" by defeating the seven–year champion. By winning the wrestling match, Okonkwo demonstrates to his village his great strength and skill as a warrior. After that his fame ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What did the locusts represent for the villagers in the coming future in relation to the British Settlers? In the Igbo culture, the locusts invade their territory and attempt to destroy the crops trying to be grown., along with the village's surrounding trees. The Igbo people eat the locusts, stopping the harm to their crops. After the British invaded, Okonkwo went to the Oracle and said "the strange men would break their clan and spread destruction among them... they were locusts" (Achebe 138– 139) This remark shows how the destroying of the yams and breaking of the trees is in direct correlation with the British invasion. The British broke apart the Igbo culture, just how the locusts had done in the past. 3. Okonkwo says "He has put a knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen apart(Achebe 176)." because he is angry about the white men coming and spreading the Christian religion. What are some reasons throughout the book that would point Chinua Achebe towards using the title Things Fall Apart? There are many reasons pointing towards the title of the book. Okonkwo starts from the bottom and nothing in his life could go much worse. He did not have anything that could fall apart "Okonkwo did not have the start in life which many young men usually had. He did not inherit a barn(Achebe 176)." The book proceeds to explain how Okonkwo builds up his life from nothings he "achieved fame as the greatest wrestler ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Essay on The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West In The Day of the Locust, Tod Hackett undergoes an internal development relative to his migration. Tod, an architect living in Connecticut, moves out to Hollywood to build scenery for movies. Yet, once he moves, Tod is transformed into a lethargic, non–artist who can no longer create his own drawings on paper. His surroundings drive these changes, as all characters in the novel are depicted in a similar fashion. Tod becomes one of the grotesque as well, laughing at the disturbing rather than the humorous. These new features signal Tod's incapacity to return to his old self, as he constantly suffers from his migration. This comes full circle at the end of the novel when Tod is led away from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tod blames this on inertia, as it is becoming easier and more natural for him to do the same things every day in LA. Only when an external force motivates him, like Abe Kusich's plans for moving do, does Tod actually move anywhere. By the end of the novel, Tod wonders "if he himself [does not] suffer from the ingrained, morbid apathy he [likes] to draw in others" (141). Here, Tod coalesces with the other apathetic Californians; he becomes one of them. These moments culminate in the police car scene when first, the policemen carry him by force to the theatre driveway, and then carry him off in their car. Tod is carried and lifted in this instance; he performs none of the actions but instead, is the receiver of them. Whereas in Connecticut, he took action in his life and studies, in Los Angeles, he can do nothing but that which is done to him. Tod's laughter after hearing the siren corresponds to the grotesque laughter that signals his ultimate failure to recover. When first in LA, Tod views the houses around him as comical: architecture lacking both beauty and romance. Yet, he finds it hard to laugh at these "truly monstrous" buildings, instead exuding a sigh (61). The artist soon meets Abe Kusich, however, who first laughs "at his own joke, using a high–pitched cackle more dwarflike than anything that [comes] from him" (63). Hollywood is known for it's acting, but the town and everyone that inhibit it seem to get carried away with trying to be something they aren't. Nothing is really indigenous in Hollywood and everything is borrowed from another place. The houses have been designed to look like Irish cottages, Spanish villas, or Southern plantations while the characters often imagine themselves as someone other than who they really are. Tod, Homer and many of Faye's other suitors, went along with her poor acting because she was beautiful yet pathetic. West says, "Raging at him, she was still beautiful. That was because her beauty was structural like a tree's, not a quality of her mind or heart" (126). They all loved her for what they saw on the outside, not her stuck up ways and wild stories. For all of the characters in West's novel, they are acting on an every day basis without even realizing it. Harry acts in pain to get attention. His illusions are then backed up by his strong beliefs that he really was a good actor. If we look at Faye we see how she also has a very strong and misconstrued idea of reality. She believes she will one day be famous and in her everyday life, she acts like she already is. Achebe incorporates folktales and myths into Things Fall Apart to illustrate the Igbo culture, characters, and experiences. These folktales appear a myths and legends which typically explain natural events. Myths are used as tools for teaching their children the history and values of their ancestors. Many draw themselves from the earth, sky, and nature, which the African culture believes to be a central part of what it means to be human. For Okonkwo, folktales are instruments of wisdom which provide important values and morals in order to keep peace within his tribe and to sustain their customs and traditions. Okonokwo tells masculine stories of bloodshed and violence, however Nyowe still prefers the stories his mother tells, which are soothing and less violent. He recalls the story of the quarrel between the Earth and Sky. Sky withheld rain for years and crops dried up and the deceased could not be buried in the hard Earth. Vulture was sent to Sky to ask for forgiveness. Sky finally conceded to forgive and gave Vulture rain wrapped in tree leaves to give to Earth. In his novel, Things Fall Apart, Achebe interconnects and associates events that occur in Umuofia with emotions and feelings that hint at what is to come. A prime example of this is Achebe's use of literary techniques in chapter seven, that create tension and convey sympathy for Ikemefuna and conclude in his tragic death. At the beginning of the novel, we find out that Ikemefuna has been given up to the Ibo tribe as a sacrificial compensation in order to prevent a war. During the journey, a man tells the others to hurry up, and Achebe writes, "Thus the men of Umuofia pursued their way, armed with sheathed matchets, and Ikemefuna, carrying a pot of palmwine on his head, walked in their midst." The necessity to quicken their pace seems to add a sense of urgency and stress upon everyone that has embarked on the journey, which is also another way that tension is created. Furthermore, the mention of matchets hints at Ikemefuna's execution. Also, the way that Achebe contrasts Ikemefuna from the rest of the men also seems to express the doubt and uncertainty in Ikemefuna, which is opposite of the men, who already know what lies ahead. In the moments leading up to his death, Ikemefuna is overwhelmed with thoughts of death, although he tries to push them far out of his mind. Then Achebe shows Ikemefuna's apprehension and fear by writing, "the man growled at him to go on and not stand looking back. The way he said it sent cold fear down Ikemefuna's back...Why had Okonkwo withdrawn to the rear?"...And he was afraid to look back." Furthermore, the reader feels an immense amount of sympathy because on page 52, Achebe describes the close bond Ikemefuna feels he shares with Okonkwo by writing, "Although he had felt uneasy at first, he was not afraid now. Universal Symbolism in Things Fall Apart Essay Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is a novel written to highlight the intriguing lives and misconceptions that are often identified with African culture. Achebe writes Things Fall Apart from the African view, a foreign perspective that sees westerners as the outsiders and Africans as the insiders. Focusing on a clan in lower Nigeria, Achebe profiles the clash of cultures that erupts when white Christians colonize and spread their religious ideals. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the novel progresses and focuses more on Okonkwo's exile, and the Europeans arrival, drums are used less frequently. This reduction symbolizes the loss of culture that Umuofia gradually experiences due to outside forces. Because drums are universally known for celebration and culture, Achebe uses this symbol to better connect with his readers and to establish his story on humanity. While drums represent the culture of the African clan, Achebe also begins to incorporate the symbol of locusts, which represent the white men coming. Achebe commonly uses the symbol of locusts to represent and foreshadow the white men coming, and the clash of opposing cultures that takes place. When the locusts arrive in Umuofia the entire clan is full of joy because locusts are delicious to eat, however bad for the crops. Though they arrived after the harvest season had ended, this positive and negative parallel represents the same questions that are asked when colonizers arrive to the society. When the locusts first arrive in Umuofia, Achebe explains, "the locusts did descend. They settled on every tree on every blade of grass; they settled on the roofs and covered the bare ground. Mighty tree branches broke away under them" (129). The repetition of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When people submerge into these fantasies, they tend to forget reality; while a woman may expect a man to give his life for her after only five days, it probably will never happen. I especially loved one story my mother often told, a tale recounting the quarrel between the Earth and the Sky. The Sky withheld water for seven years, and it took the pleading song of the Vulture, on behalf of the desiccated Earth, for rain to fall once more. In my life, my father Okonkwo would be cold–hearted Sky. Only, in this story, the Sky did not plague the world with drought; its rain never ceased, not even when the waters blanketed the Earth in its cold, shadowy depths. My father hated all the things that were soft, and he was inexplicably infuriated with me. Attempting to discipline me into masculinity, he constantly beat and nagged me for my inherent laziness and femininity. His rage was tumultuous as a tempest, and his displeasure was like a torrent of water, unending and unforgiving. Miraculously, the rainfall ceased with the arrival of Ikemefuna. He came to Umuofia as a compensation, and the clan saw him as a mere sacrifice. To me, however, Ikemefuna was my surrogate elder brother. He taught me things my father's violence never could and was worldly in way I could never be. They help display the story in different perspectives and help us understand concepts we don't always pick up on when first reading the novels. These symbols reveal more in depth detail about the themes of each novel as well as add to the development of characters. Some major symbols seen in Things Fall Apart are the locusts which make a reference to the Bible and are a metaphor for the coming missionaries, Okonkwo's father, Unoka, who symbolizes Okonkwo's failures, and fire which symbolizes destruction. The major themes in The Poisonwood Bible are the snake which represents a character from the bible, Methuselah who symbolizes the fate of the Congo and the poisonwood tree which symbolizes Nathan's mistakes. The first symbol we see in Things Fall Apart is Okonkwo's father, Unoka. Unoka was a failure all throughout Okonkwo's childhood, he was lazy and a coward. Since that 1913 statement, Hollywood has fostered this type of reality–making that results into an escape for its audiences. Aside from the physical escape of traveling to the movies or Blockbuster in order to view these films, audiences are also invested in the characters they view on screen. However, Webb informs the public that "what appears on the screen is a stylized version of real life (or a plausible vision of imaginary worlds) that is made possible by the prolonged collaborative effort of hundreds, working in support of a celebrated few" (3). The "reality" of the cinema lies in producers, directors, actors, back–lots, etc. involved in its creation rather ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. The Rise And Fall Of A Time Of Wine And Plenty When Joel... Israel has experienced the rise and fall of three empires and is in a time of wine and plenty when Joel emerges as prophet. As prophet, Joel's role is to awaken the people from apathetic living and give them insight into what is on the horizon for them if they continue in their current state. Joel highlights the dichotomy of the elders of the land and the inhabitants of the land, throughout the book. This type of class dichotomy comes from a structuring of society that disregards the order God first set into motion for the people of Israel in the wilderness. The tabernacle at that time acted as the center of society and caused the inhabitants to see one another when they looked to it. The elders and leaders had a connection to God that caused them to serve the people through education, healthcare and settling disputes. However, during Joel's time, temple theology is strong and rather than servant leaders, it appears the elders, or leaders of the land have economic advantage over the people and the now temple, is not serving its purpose. Joel understands the negative effects this has on the people and will have on the nation, but lacks revelation that could lead to reform or change. He reads the signs, and even the words but lacks understanding of the way God would bring resolve to the issues Israel faces. Joel has good intentions, but many of his suggestions seem to be similar to common answers dealt out by the religious system, and could be qualified in the end more along ... The new generation is inclined to think that fame and money is the lifestyle one should desire. Hollywood is the mecca of celebrities, and this is where the new American Dream is located. Hollywood transformed the definition of the American dream. Many consider it the Hollywood dream, which consists of the fast life. "Satires of Hollywood reveal the extent to which the Hollywood Dream has subverted and ultimately replaced the position of the American Dream in American culture." Per James Cook (8). Fast money, popularity/fame, the beautiful women/men at your disposal, and having people wish they were you. Celebrities appear to be the face of the Hollywood dream. People from far and wide come to Hollywood to achieve this prosperous life and fulfill their acting careers. However, similar to the American Dream, this is all just a myth. No matter how hard one may work, they just won't be able to fulfill their dreams. Cook articulates "The primary concern of the Hollywood Dream, unlike the American Dream, is 'ends not means" (9) Many millennials tend to only focus on the end result, and disregard the ... It's a centuries old tradition that was originally designed to settle legal disputes in the city of Santo Tomas. According to Maximo and Alejandra Ttico (2012), The basic idea of Takanakuy is that men, women, and children save their accumulated conflicts throughout the year to solve all differences on Christmas day despite race or monetary income. Instead of fighting in that very moment they save it for Christmas where everyone in the village meet up wrap their fists and commence to beat each other (pg. 151). I found this as the perfect opportunity to talk about my culture, which is somewhat virtually unknown in American society. Many aspects of racism, sexism, and monetary inequality that we touched in our class readings still exist in many indigenous cultures till this day. And I believe this event works well among my culture. A Christmas party tradition should be synonymous with love, unity and fellowship, but here it's the perfect opportunity for residents of the area to provide solutions to their legal problems, love problems, petty rivalries and conflicts, which are accumulated throughout the year to be solved with a bare knuckle fight. This ancient tradition dating back to the pre–Incan period is one of the most important cultural events of the Andean calendar. It is known for not having any mechanism to enforce justice and there is almost no police control. The town's people make ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Analysis Of Miss Lonelyhearts And The Day Of The Locust In Miss Lonelyhearts and The Day of the Locust, each character experiences suffering, and in each case the suffering is ridiculed. Schadenfreude is a basic human experience; human beings do find humor in other's misfortune. Society is so accustomed to the feeling of schadenfreude that hardly anyone knows exactly where it comes from or how distasteful it is. Society feeds schadenfreude of physical pain by letting it reside throughout comedy. Almost every comedic movie, show, song, sketch or any other form of entertainment is cluttered with people being hurt. Harry Greener's clown show in The Day of the Locust is completely centered around his pain. "'When he stands up, the audience, which failed to laugh at his joke, laughs at his limp, so he continues lame for the rest of the act,'" (West, The Day 78). The entire comedy genre thrives off of schadenfreude. Perhaps this is because the audience knows that the subject is not truly hurt, so it becomes funny to see people such as Curly, Moe, and Larry beat each other. Perhaps it is because people use laughter as a shield against pain. When people see pain they laugh to make it seem that it did not actually hurt. It is a product of empathy for him who was hurt. Laughter serves to camouflage embarrassment which is included in empathy. The ways in which characters receive injuries are usually embarrassing, and the audience feels the embarrassment causing them to laugh. Schadenfreude is embedded in human emotions such as envy, ... Analysis of The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West Essay Analysis of The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West Nathanael West's The Day of the Locust tells the story of people who have come to California in search of the American Dream. They travel west hoping to escape less than perfect lives and pursue success in Hollywood. The characters in this novel dream of a life of luxury, having lots of money, and living happily ever after. They eventually come to the realization that the seemingly picture perfect life that California represents is not as easy to attain as they once thought. The characters in The Day of the Locust grow discontented and disappointed with their lives and embittered towards the world, which instigates the downfall of this lower level of Hollywood society. One example of this is a scene when Todd is getting ready to go out, but "his eyes [keep] straying to the photograph...a picture of Faye Greener" (67). As displayed in this quote, Todd's life is occupied with the need to be loved by Faye. This compulsion eventually leaves Todd with feelings of failure and breaks him down. Faye "could only love a handsome man and would only let a wealthy man love her" (67). Faye constantly disregards Todd's feelings for her, slowly crushing his dream life. Faye's insincere discernment of love is a prevalent example of Hollywood's degenerative impact upon those in search of materialistic success. Todd's failed efforts to gain the love of Faye Greener characterize his downfall and failure to aspire to his dreams and goals. While continuing to pay no attention to Todd, Faye Greener strives to become famous among the movie scene in Hollywood. Her beauty and allure are only surpassed by her rapaciousness and materialism. A dim cognizance of these traits lead her to blame herself for her father's death. "I killed him" (122), Faye exclaims realizing that she had once informed him that if he could not buy her what she wanted that she would leave him to find someone who could. As Faye faces her guilt for her father's demise, she furthermore sacrifices her moral beliefs when she works as a prostitute to afford ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I changed my MM to include "remember to" because the language alludes to the salvation the Israelites experienced during the exodus. Using this language encourages readers to remember the fate of the Egyptians and Israelites involved in the exodus. I also added "includes judgment and salvation" because those are two themes that are intertwined with the Day of the Lord. TSp Repeating ideas within the book include sweet wine (1:5 and 3:18), desolation (1:10 and 3:19), and generations that inhabit the land (1:2–3 and 3:20). In the novel, The Day of the Locust, Nathanael West is able to depict the falsity behind the American Dream. The dream is dangerous. West views Hollywood's version of the phenomenon known as the American Dream as a myth that many people fall victim to, which is shown through the recurring themes of despair in the novel. Through the characters of The Day of the Locust, Nathaniel West is able to illustrate the dangers of the Hollywood dream. According to Christenson "The virtues that were once associated with the dream have all but disappeared from the societies depicted in American literature as the quest for fame, fortune, and power has replaced them." (2). Each character in the novel has a different background, but ultimately came to California for a better life. They are blinded by their desires, with each of them desiring something they can't have. In pursuit of this fictitious lifestyle, each character has to put on a certain persona. They all are a representation of a failed attempt at accomplishing the Hollywood dream. When people think of the American Dream, most think of the good that arises with it. They don't consider the hardships and obstacles one must overcome. Many immigrants come to America in hopes of accomplishing their dreams and aspirations, and if they can't, maybe their children can. Haspel debates how "The U.S. has changed drastically in the last several decades. The middle class, which was the heart of the American Dream, is dwindling, and the disparity of wealth among social classes continues to grow." (41) This defends the popular phrase "The rich get richer while the poorer get poorer." In essence, the American Dream can be viewed as the aim to climb the economic ladder. As the economic gap between the different social classes grow, it becomes harder for certain groups to see the American Dream as an attainable goal. The American Dream entails a variety of opportunities, and it is hard for minorities to grasp such opportunities with limited resources.
